The day marks the anniversary of the April 19, 1775 battles of Lexington and Concord. Now, standardized as a fixed feast, the holiday is celebrated in the Bay State on April's third Monday. It is a day of re-enactments of the battles, the midnight rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes and the hanging of the lantern in the Old North Church. Oh, and thousands of runners, like my sister Lynne, take on the Boston Marathon. Stepping back from all the commemorations, we need to ask: "What is the real message of Patriots Day?" To me, and my guess, to you, the lesson is that to ensure the Americans remained under control, the British sent the army to seize their guns. Seven months earlier, the British marched from Boston to present-day Somerville and seized a cache of firearms and munitions held in Nathan Tufts' powder house. That day, Sept. 1, 1774 ...

This lead to the start of the American Revolutionary War. Massachusetts and Maine celebrate Patriots Day as a legal holiday with reenactments and other events.
