Estimates from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicate that if a wave is to affect Tonga it will arrive at around 6.15pm this evening. Costly Lessons Learned Jessie Taylor University of North Texas Response to: “The Wave that Shook the World” EADP 3010-001 January 24, 13 Dawn on December 26, 2004 marked a new day with new possibilities and new challenges. No one waking up east of the Sundra Trench, Sumatra knew of the terrors the day would bring. This day’s lessons have become an integral piece of every emergency administration doctrine with the grievous memory of the numerous casualties sustained ensuring decisive action. Shortly after dawn in the Sundra Trench, a large earthquake occurred which caused a rupture in the ocean floor about twelve hundred kilometers long. This large rupture under the Indian Ocean is only 155 miles from the Island of Sumatra. Soon after this earthquake ended, which only lasted four minutes, a seismograph depicted the activity eight thousand miles away in California. Also, scientists at The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center noticed the activity only a few minutes after occurrence. Due to the lack of tid ...
More: Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued immediate tsunami warning following earthquake off Indonesia -
My family used to own a cattle ranch on the Big Island and my grandmother was in Hilo on April 1st, 1946 when that tsunami hit. It's the reason the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was established. The quake was in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska and the wave took five hours to reach Hilo. The first wave wasn't that large but when my grandmother saw water recede out to sea and leave the bay dry, she ran for the hills. Unfortunately, many people did not. The second wave was bigger. People thought it was over and went out onto the Wailoa River bridge to watch. The third wave was nearly 50-feet high and washed them all away. My grandmother watched a lot of her friends die that day and had nightmares about it for the rest of her life. So, yeah, this one may not have been large but you never know when it will be so take every warning seriously.
