Russian Bombers Threaten Guam Russian TU-95 Bear H / AP BY: Bill Gertz Follow November 19, 2014 10:33 pm Two Russian strategic bombers circled the U.S. island of Guam last week in what U.S. defense officials say is the latest in a series of nuclear provocations by Moscow. The bombers were identified by air defenses as Tu-95 Bear H nuclear-capable aircraft that circumnavigated the strategic U.S. military outpost on Friday—amid heightened tensions with Moscow regarding a new buildup of Russian forces in and along the border of eastern Ukraine. “U.S. Pacific Command can confirm that two aircraft circumnavigated Guam on November 13th,” said spokesman Maj. Christian Devine. “The aircraft were flying safely in international airspace and in accordance with international norms; as such, the decision was made to not intercept them.” Friday’s flights were the second time in the past two years that Russia conducted unusual long-range bomber missions around the island. Two Tu-95s circled the island on Fe ...

It's well known that John McCain spent more than 5 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, much of which at the infamous Hanoi Hilton. What many don't know is that almost immediately upon his capture, McCain was offered the opportunity to go home. John's father, Admiral John McCain Jr, was the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command, and the enemy knew what a crushing blow they could deliver to the morale of the American fighting forces if they released his son. John McCain III refused to go, adhering to code that the first one in is the first one out and the last one in is the last one out. In light of the events of this past weekend, I thought this needed to be revisited.

China Flexes It's Nuclear Submarine Power In Warning to US/Asian Neighbors June 02, 2014 | Bill Gertz Share this article China has deployed three nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines to a naval base in the South China Sea, according to a recent photo of the vessels that appeared on the Internet. The three Type 094 missile submarines were photographed at the Yalong Bay naval base on Hainan Island, located at the northern end of the South China Sea. The submarines appear to be part of China’s plan to begin the first regular sea patrols of nuclear missile submarines. Adm. Samuel Locklear, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, voiced concerns about Chinese missile submarines in testimony to the House Armed Services Committee in March. “China’s advance in submarine capabilities is significant,” Locklear said. “They possess a large and increasingly capable submarine force. China continues the production of ballistic missile submarines. … This will give China its first credible sea-based nucle ...

Closing our eyes in Korea (via the Air Force Association): The U-2 retirement would pose an immediate reduction in capability on the Korean Peninsula according to US Forces Korea and US Pacific Command leaders. USFK Commander Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti gave a strong endorsement of the U-2, conceding he understood the Air Force's need to cut cost, but noted the Dragon Lady provides a "unique capability that presently the Global Hawk does not provide." He noted high altitude persistent intelligence gathering capabilities of the U-2 on the Korean Peninsula provide important threat and intelligence indicators that are critical to US and South Korean military operations on the Peninsula. Retiring the U-2 would be a "loss of intelligence and indicators that the Global Hawk can't provide currently," he said.

This came to me in an email and you need to see this. I urge everyone to think about what has happened tomorrow military. Dear Friends and loved ones: After spending 8 years total in the U.S. Army including active duty and reserve time, I am appalled at this note that our elected President has done to our country and we the people, again! From U.S. Naval War College Public Affairs NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) unveiled the public online digitization project of Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz's 4,000 page operational diary, known as The Nimitz Graybook, during an evening lecture, Feb. 24 at NWC in Newport, R.I. Covering activities and correspondence of the Pacific Command from Dec. 7, 1941 to Aug. 31, 1945, the Graybook is a historical record of operations and planning in the Pacific during World War II and serves as a window into Nimitz's decision making process during the war. "We can trace the planning process, a lot of which was pioneered here at the Naval War College, for large-scale operations and watch the war unfold almost as if we were in the room," said Craig L. Symonds, U.S. Naval Academy professor emeritus of history, during the evening lecture. According to Symonds, Nimitz proclaimed that 'the war-gaming experience and education he received here at NWC were central to his success in the Pacific war.' "Cheste ...
Defending the Dragon Lady Orlando, Fla.— The U-2 remains a high-demand asset in combatant commands around the world because of its flexibility and survivability, Lockheed Martin U-2 Director Melani Austin told reporters Thursday at AFA's Air Warfare Symposium here. Austin touted U-2 mission success rates, flexibility, and potency in anti-access, area-denial environments. Earlier this year, the U-2S fleet completed a 10-band, multispectral electro-optical-infrared sensor communications gateway, Austin said. In Fiscal 2013, the U-2S had a 97.6 percent mission success rate in US Central Command; a 97.3 percent success rate in US European Command; and in US Pacific Command a 95.7 percent success rate. In addition, the U-2 is modular, and has a host of sensor suites it can fly with, from the SYERS II (multispectral) sensor to the optical bar camera and a signals intelligence suite. It also is survivable in a denied environment, emphasized Austin. Global Hawks, on the other hand, can only carry one sensor at ...

It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So consider the actions of the U.S. Special Operations Command flattering indeed to the larger U.S. military. After all, over recent decades the Pentagon has done something that once would have been inconceivable. It has divided the whole globe, just about every inch of it, like a giant pie, into six command slices: U.S. European Command, or EUCOM (for Europe and Russia), U.S. Pacific Command, or PACOM (Asia), U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM (the Greater Middle East and part of North Africa), U.S. Southern Command, or SOUTHCOM (Latin America), and in this century, U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM (the United States, Canada, and Mexico), and starting in 2007, U.S. Africa Command, or AFRICOM (most of Africa). The ambitiousness of the creeping decision to bring every inch of the planet under the watchful eyes of U.S. military commanders should take anyone’s breath away. N Korea missile hitting US alerts officials The commander of the US Pacific Command says the United States is prepared to counter North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile that can hit his country. "Whether they [ballistic missiles] are real or not, or whether they have the capability or not, North Korean regime wants us to think they do and so we plan for that," Adm. Samuel Locklear said on Tuesday. North Korea unveiled its road mobile KN-08 missile during a military parade in Pyongyang in April 2012. However, some experts believe they are not real missiles. The KN-08 missile is capable of hitting the United States as it can reach about 6,000 miles, which puts Los Angeles in range. Markus Schiller, an expert in the North Korean military, said that it was "totally impossible" for the KN-08 to be operational without tests. However, another analysis by the Johns Hopkins University's US-Korea Institute said the missiles could be real. "Elegant or not," those missiles in the parade show an ability to ...

~admin arkanghel Well, then good! Please protect the Asia Pacific region US Navy and RETAIN THE STATUS QUO. KUALA LUMPUR – The United States will oppose moves by any country to seize control of disputed areas in the South China Sea by force, the top American military commander in the Pacific said yesterday. Adm. Samuel Locklear added that rival claimants might need to seek compromises to resolve the feud over potentially oil-rich territories. The commander of US Pacific Command did not mention any country by name, but China’s increasingly aggressive claims to disputed islands have triggered worries about confrontations with others, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei. “We will oppose the change of status quo by force by anyone,” Locklear told reporters during a visit to Malaysia. “We need to retain the status quo until we get to a code of conduct or a solution by party nations that is peacefully accepted.” Southeast Asian governments want a legally binding code of conduct w ...

On May 9, 2013, a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources patrol vessel, the MCS 3001, encountered the Taiwanese fishing vessel Guang Ta Hsin 28 within Philippine waters. Although the Taiwanese government has claimed that the fishing boat was within their territory, several facts that contradict this claim of Taiwan is that their fishermen frequently poach in the Philippines and Philippine patrol vessels never stray outside of the country’s territorial waters. To further emphasize this, given the materiel deficiencies of the Philippine Coast Guard, the BFAR, and the Philippine Navy ...
Terrorism, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) LeT: Augmenting Threat Emphasizing the Lashkar-e-Taiba’s (LeT) clout and survival capabilities in South Asia, Admiral Samuel Locklear, Commander of the US Pacific Command (PACOM), observed, on April 9, 2013, “LeT remains one, if not the most operationally capable terrorist groups through all of South Asia. LeT was responsible for the November 2008 attack in Mumbai, India, that killed over 160 people, including six Americans, and has supported or executed a number of other attacks in South Asia in recent years.” Significantly, the Combating Terrorism Centre (CTC) at the US Military Academy, West Point, published a paper, “The Fighters of Lashkar-e-Taiba: Recruitment, Training, Deployment and Death”, on April 4, 2013, based on the biographies of 917 LeT militants killed in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) between 1989 and 2008. Unsurprisingly, the report found that 94 percent of the selected LeT militants listed J&K as the ‘fighting front’. The vast ...

Drink-driving putting innocent lives at risk - Operation Safe Arrival Sunday, 23 December 2012 12:02:19 PM The holiday road toll remains at one following Day Two of Operation Safe Arrival, however; senior police fear it will rise with so many motorists putting lives at risk. Since the start of the operation on Friday (21 December 2012), police have conducted 83,806 breath tests (up from 82,686 last year) with 111 charges laid (down from 185 last year). US eyes better ties with China to promote peace The United States is looking forward to developing its relationship with China so they can work together to promote peace and prosperity. Brig. Gen. Michael Compton, Strategic Planning and Policy Mobilization Assistant of the US Pacific Command, told The STAR he believes their most important relationship in the next 50 years will be with China. “We’ve been here a long time,” he said. “They (China) are building up their military capability very rapidly, much faster than any other country and much faster than the relationships have developed. “We’re very interested in developing the relationship at the same speed with which it is developing its military capability. It is important.” Compton said the current military ties between the US and China is “a growing relationship.” “We are completely tied together economically by rising technologies,” he said. Compton said economic and diplomatic connections make the relationship between China an ...
More countries eyed in war games The United States wants to expand the Balikatan joint exercises to include other countries in the region, believing this would enable them to address common security concerns. Brig. Gen. Michael Compton, assistant for strategic planning and policy mobilization of the US Pacific Command, said they have proposed that another country participate in next year’s exercise. “We propose maybe adding one country next year because Australia recently signed a SOVFA (Status of Visiting Forces Agreement) with the Philippines. This is a great opportunity to use that agreement. We all have a common strategic and economic interest,” Compton told The STAR yesterday. He said another country that may participate in the exercise is Japan, which he said has a close relationship with the Philippines and “share a lot of common interests.” Like the Philippines, Japan is also in the middle of a diplomatic row with China over territorial issues. Compton said the inclusion of other countri ...

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney unveiled a star-studded list of endorsements from some 300 retired general and flag officers, pushing the role of former Pentagon brass to the center of the campaign. “As I listen to Mitt Romney, I am convinced that he ‘gets it,’ ” retired Marine Gen. James Conway, a former commandant, said in a statement released by the Romney campaign. Other prominent names listed as members of Romney’s “Military Advisory Council” include retired Army Gen. Tommy Franks, who led U.S. Central Command during the initial invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq; retired Navy Adm. Timothy Keating, former chief of U.S. Pacific Command; and former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ronald Fogleman.
Among the better-known military men endorsing Romney are Army Gen. Tommy Franks, the key architect of the military plan to oust Saddam Hussein, former Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James Conway, former Pacific Command chief Admiral Timothy Keating, and former Joint Chiefs Chairman Army Gen. The US Northern Command, NORTHCOM, near Colorado Springs & the post-Cold War NORAD command center, was set up in 2002 as a Department of Defense counterpart to the Department of Homeland Security. NORTHCOM is a global 'combatant command' with responsibility for all of North America, like CENTCOM handles the Middle East, EUCOM Europe, AFRICOM Africa, etc. (By the way, PACOM, the Pacific Command, has 'CONPLAN 7502' setup for Asian Civil Disturbance Operations - i.e. almost certainly ready-to-go on US bases during the Seoul G20). CONPLANs are Concept of Operations Plans, basically abstract templates, around 200 to 300 pages long in some cases, which can be turned into OPLANs, specific local operations plans. Other operations like exercises (exercise orders or EXORDs) can be generated from CONPLANs as well. CONPLANs are numbered in sets for each combatant command - NORTHCOM got the 2500s and 3500s, PACOM the 7500s etc. Before NORTHCOM, the US military labeled its plans differently. The urban riots of the 1960 ...
