Mike Riley at Oregon State was pretty similar to Alvarez at Wisconsin
Less than a week after longtime Oregon State University football coach Mike Riley left Corvallis for Nebraska, the Beavers have found his replacement.

Just as no one saw Mike Riley bolting for Nebraska, no one saw Gary Andersen coming to Oregon State.

After just two seasons and a 19-7 record at Wisconsin, Gary Andersen has taken the coaching job at Oregon State that became vacant when Mike Riley left for Nebraska.
Commitment to the process. Integrity. Finishing strong. These are the kind of slogans that football coaches across America spout every day. And never do they sound more ridiculous and hollow than during college bowl season, when every year multiple coaches bail on their teams before their bowl games and secure new jobs. If you were fired and are looking for a new job (Bo Pelini) , that's one thing. But to bail out before your bowl game to take another job (Mike Riley, Gary Andersen) is lame. Wisconsin needs to hire Bo Pelini. Then the full ridiculousness will come full circle: Gary Andersen leaving Wisconsin for Oregon State; Mike Riley leaving Oregon State for Nebraska; Pelini fired by Nebraska and still looking for a job. Come on Badgers, make it happen!

My guaranteed lock of the day: Mike Riley is going to win the presser. Then he's going to win some more.
I'm glad everyone has calmed down about Mike Riley. People are getting caught up on number of wins. The PAC 12 schedule was a lot tougher. If Nebraska played against the same teams Oregon State played this year we would have been 5-7 or 4-8. The last time we scheduled a good non-conference opponent outside of Miami was UCLA and we lost both of those games. Most years starting the season 5-0 is a given. 9 wins isn't that tough win you look at our schedule. There were plenty of games we barely won that easily could have gone the other way. Remember McNeese St...if they didn't get a touchdown called back due to penalty we would have lost to a Div II team this year. Looking forward to what Mike Riley can bring to Nebraska! GBR

In discussion of Mike Riley leaving Oregon State, simply can't be understood w/o mention of recent John Canzano rape story.
Been seeing and hearing a lot of complaining about the hiring of Mike Riley to be our new head coach. I’m actually excited to see the new regime in Lincoln. Here are some of my thoughts… Don’t give me the excuse that Mike Riley is TOO old. Is that affecting Pete Carroll, Nick Saban,or Bill Snyder? Not trying to compare Riley to those coaches, rather I’m illustrating the point that if you have a plan and the right people in place, age should not matter. Don’t get caught up in his Overall Record. Sure, 93-80 is unimpressive. Comparing Oregon State to Nebraska is unfair. Different locations, facilities, and COMMITMENT. Did you know that Oregon State had 26 straight losing seasons before Mike Riley arrived in Corvallis. He has had to compete with the Nike factory named the Oregon Ducks during his tenure. Eugene, Oregon is a mere 47 miles away from Corvallis. Talk about an uphill battle in support and recruiting. Player Development With his limited resources and talent, Mike Riley has overachi ...

He replaces Bo Pelini, who was dismissed after the Huskers finished the regular season 9-3
Less than 24 hours after the "Bielema to Nebraska" smokescreen, the Huskers have their man. Mike Riley has been pulled away from Oregon State, and will head to the cornfields of Lincoln. Riley has been a winner, Posting an 83-70 mark for the Beavers, but Big Red's last coach was a winner as well. Gusty move when you consider consistent 9-win season might not be enough. -WR-

Who's going to replace Mike Riley at Oregon State?
Mike Riley? Really?!? So We get rid of Bo (who never won fewer than 9 games) to hire this clown who went 5-7 and was on his way to being fired! Well Eichorst...you are either going to come out a genius or be in the unemployment line with Riley in two years! How in the *** do you not go get Scott Frost?!? Hometown hero born in the shadows of Memorial Stadium, QB for Osborne's final National Championship, OC of the year candidate, and, at 39 years old, somebody you could build another dynasty with. No, instead let's go get a 61 no name hack that couldn't win in the CFL, NFL or Oregon State! But hey, at least he played under Bear Bryant (who's been dead for *** near 40yrs!!!) so at least we got that gold star on the resume! Guess Bill Callahan wasn't available this time around!!
Prior to Mike Riley going to Oregon State in 1997, the Beavers had an NCAA record of 28 consecutive LOSING seasons. He knows how to coach and recruit!
Not discrediting Mike Riley but I do ponder Eichorst's decision. Nebraska fired Bo because he couldn't win big games? Oregon State lost to USC, Utah, Stanford, California, Washington State, Washington, and Oregon... the only "big game" they won was against Arizona State and no offense but I think the losses to Cal and Washington State should definitely cover that up. Also OSU barely escaped Hawai'i and Portland State and finished with a 5-7 record. *** Eichorst? Did you put much thought into this hire? I'm sorry I will always support Nebraska and I will support Mike Riley and his campaign here with Nebraska but I don't think I can support the rational of Shawn Eichorst. The whole "Bo can't win big games." seems like a hypocritical statement, where is this big time coach you promised us? Do you know what you're doing?
Here is how I really feel about the Mike Riley hire. Our AD fired Pelini because he felt that he had plateaued. I don't disagree with that assessment. Many outsiders looking in will tell you that Husker fans have way too high of expectations and that we will never reach an elite level again because we just aren't a recruiting hotbed. Most Husker fans (I being one of them) don't believe this to be true, but I bet you would have a hard time convincing Oregon State fans that they will never be nationally relevant again too. Now we bring in Mike Riley, a man that the majority of Oregon State faithful says is a good man and a good coach. Recently, a vocal minority has turned on Riley calling for his head because the program doesn't seem to be progressing. Sound familiar? Media is currently pumping us with the idea that Riley is a great coach that made the best of a bad situation at Oregon State. Here is my issue with that. Most people looking at the Huskers from the outside would say the same thing ab ...

Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is returning for his senior season. Mannion, who has already graduated with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies, announced his decision Monday in a statement released by the Beavers. "I'm excited to return for my senior year," Mannion said. "I weighed the pros and cons of making myself eligible for the Draft with my family and current coaching staff, and came to the conclusion that I have decided to continue my career with my teammates at Oregon State." Mannion set a Pac-12 season record for passing yards with 4,662 and threw an Oregon State-record 37 touchdown passes, third-most for a single season in conference history. Before making his decision, he consulted the NFL Draft Advisory Board and was projected as a third-round selection. In fall camp, coach Mike Riley took his time to decide whether to start Mannion or Cody Vaz. The two had traded off the prior season -- mostly because of injuries -- and the Beavers went 9-4 after winning just three games in 2011. Ma ...

"If you are a Husky fan you have to be wondering where this has been all year?" ESPN announcer doing the Beavers game. No kidding. The only coach who under achieves more in the PAC 12 than Mike Riley is Steve Sarkisian. And of course.when the Beavers needed to play a huge game most at home to build momentum heading to a Civil War game against a suddenly very mortal Ducks team.they do this. CLASSIC Mike Riley. At ANY other school with the slightest expectations of winning, he might be in danger of being fired. But not at Oregon State. In football mediocrity is not just expected.it is the standard he strives for. Thank God baseball season will soon be here and then we will see a coach who is COMMITTED to winning and excellence.

Okay, it's Civil War prediction time: Oregon stumbled last weekend against Stanford in a 17-14 defeat, and their national title hopes are now iffy at the moment. Still, a victory on Saturday would assure them a fourth consecutive BCS Bowl bid (most likely the Fiesta, but could be the Rose or even the 'Natty' if a few things break their way). But some things are easier said than done. If they are going to rebound from the recent upset, they'll have to do it against a very hungry and competitive Oregon State team in Corvallis. Whether it's Sean Mannion throwing to Markus Wheaton on the offensive side or big play makers like Jordan Poyer on the defense, this is clearly the best team that Mike Riley has coached in a few years. That said, is another upset on the horizon? No. If you look at the recent history under Chip Kelly, his teams have been very good about rebounding the following week after a tough loss. And honestly, can you really see Oregon being held well under their scoring average two games i ...

Ferentz is 19-19 over the last three seasons. It's easy to say, well it's Iowa, what can you really expect. For that kind of salary, an 8+ win team every season. If we are satisfied with mediocrity, then hire a hungry coach from a small school to coach the Hawkeyes to a .500 record for 1/3 of the pay.
Mike Riley: Stanford is next 'Super Bowl' for Oregon State Created on Sunday, November 04, 2012 | Written by Kerry Eggers | Beavers coach dissects Cardinal game, win over Arizona State Life in the bubble moves on for Oregon State as it heads south for the biggest game of the year Saturday at Stanford. Sound familiar? The mindset going into last Saturday’s 36-26 win over Arizona State was that it was OSU’s most important game of the season, too. A loss would have sent the Beavers to Stanford on a two-game losing streak with no chance at the Rose Bowl or BCS bowl game. Now, the Beavers (7-1 overall, 5-1 in Pac-12 play) are sitting well — ranked 10th in the BCS standings and 12th (Associated Press) and 13th (USA Today) in the polls. Every bit as much is riding on Saturday’s visit to Stanford (7-2, 5-1). The winner remains in the hunt for the Pac-12 North championship and in the major bowl picture. The loser is looking at something decidedly less attractive. “I guess it is,” OSU coach Mike Riley s ...

Oregon State football injury report WR Markus Wheaton (concussion) remains out of practice. He won’t practice until Thursday at the earliest. “He’s doing pretty good, and I think he’ll practice this week,” coach Mike Riley said. CB Jordan Poyer (knee) missed his second day this week. “That’s a day-to-day thing,” Riley said. Wheaton is Poyer's backup on punt returns. If neither of them can do it, RB Terron Ward or CB Rashaad Reynolds will return punts, Riley said. RB Storm Woods (knee) practiced some but was very limited. “I was encouraged he dressed out,” Riley said. “He’s not ready for prime time, but he’s making progress.”

Mike Riley's wild coaching ride has Oregon State cruising up the BCS standings - Pat Forde -
Oregon State starting quarterback Sean Mannion returned to practice Wednesday, a week after having minor surgery on his left knee. Mannion was in full pads and ran through the regular drills. He even worked against the scout team defense for some of the plays. There was some rust, but Mannion made all the throws and even rolled out of the pocket. “It’s great; it’s a like a miracle from what we heard a week ago Monday,” coach Mike Riley said after practice. “We’ll see how he progresses. He’s not going to start this game.” Mannion had surgery on his meniscus last week after being injured during the Oct. 6 Washington State game. He’s still listed as week-to-week. Riley wouldn’t put a timetable on his return and wouldn’t say if he’ll be available as a backup Saturday against Utah. Mannion couldn’t speak to the media about how he feels due to OSU’s policy of no player interviews on Tuesdays and Wednesday. “They (doctors and trainers) will evaluate it this afternoon and tomorrow mo ...
Comment on ESPN about Oregon State's coach Mike Riley - "He has motivated his team with, of all things, postgame trips to the closest In-N-Out Burger." If Oregon State goes undefeated In-N-Out should definitely make an AD campaign out of that.
Mid-season props will only fuel our boys & Mike this week... LET'S GO, BEAVERS!! From the today's Yahoo! Sports blog: "We are more or less halfway through the season... But who is The Dash to buck tradition (in giving out mid-season awards)? Here is your halfway hardware: Coach of the Midyear, Veteran Division = Mike Riley! Mike Riley (6), Oregon State. Riley’s unranked Beavers began the season with consecutive upsets of ranked teams: first Wisconsin, then UCLA on the road. They followed that up with victories over Arizona and Washington State – but lost quarterback Sean Mannion to a knee injury against the Cougars. No matter. Backup Cody Vaz played superbly at BYU in his first game action in two years, and now a program coming off a 3-9 season is the unlikeliest team in the BCS Top 10."

Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion had surgery Wednesday morning to repair damage to the meniscus in his left knee and was recovering, OSU senior associate Athletic Director for sports medicine Dr. Doug Aukerman said. The surgery by Dr. Donald Pennington of Samaritan Health Services went as planned and Mannion started the early stages of rehab in the afternoon. Mannion wanted to be at practice Wednesday, but Aukerman wouldn’t let him. “Everything went well,” Aukerman said. “Sean is recovering and we are excited about the outcome. Everyone is pleased and Sean is upbeat. He’ll sail through this and be back soon.” Mannion will be considered week-to-week when he returns. Normal recovery time is two to four weeks, but Aukerman wouldn’t give a timetable for Mannion. “Whatever they ask him to do, he’ll triple it,” coach Mike Riley said. “That’s what he’ll have to be careful of.”

Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley announced Friday the addition of true freshman offensive lineman David Keller to the roster. Keller, originally recruited by the Beavers, is a transfer from Fresno State where he signed a national letter of intent in February. He has signed a financial aid agreement to attend OSU. “We are excited that David has made the decision to join our program,” Riley said in a press release. “David is a very talented player and he will immediately help our team improve, even though he will be a practice player for this season.” Keller is ineligible to play this season due to NCAA transfer rules, but he can practice with the team immediately and is expected to arrive on campus next week. He has three years of eligibility remaining, to be completed in four years, starting with the 2013 season as a sophomore.
