Old World & American Revolution

The Old World consists of those parts of the world known to classical antiquity and the European Middle Ages. The American Revolution was the political upheaval during the last half of the 18th century in which thirteen colonies in North America joined together to break free from the British Empire, combining to become the United States of America. 5.0/5

A July 4th Reflection on the key Contribution of Presbyterianism to American Independence: "With this background we shall not be surprised to find that the Presbyterians took a very prominent part in the American Revolution. Our own historian Bancroft says: "The Revolution of 1776, so far as it was affected by religion, was a Presbyterian measure. It was the natural outgrowth of the principles which the Presbyterianism of the Old World planted in her sons, the English Puritans, the Scotch Covenanters, the French Huguenots, the Dutch Calvinists, and the Presbyterians of Ulster." So intense, universal, and aggressive were the Presbyterians in their zeal for liberty that the war was spoken of in England as "The Presbyterian Rebellion." An ardent colonial supporter of King George III wrote home: "I fix all the blame for these extraordinary proceedings upon the Presbyterians. They have been the chief and principal instruments in all these flaming measures. They always do and ever will act against government fr ...
1776. This number brings to the mind of most Americans the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence that issued from it. This is very understandable and marks a critical point in the development of the New World, not just the United States of America. 1776. But in the Old World, across the Atlantic in West Africa, connected by the ‘triangular trade’ - which most scholars refer to as the genesis of globalization and the modern era -, the House of Slaves was built on Goree Island in 1776 by the Dutch. 1776. America's first African-American President visit to Goree Island and the House of Slaves occurs just days before July 4th 2013 drips with significance when one realizes this ironic connection of history: independence for America and slavery for Africa. 1776. At the same time our world, New and Old, was celebrating the glorious freedom of the human spirit it was simultaneously engaged in avaricious profiteering from enslavement of the human spirit. Same time, yet different spirits conn ...
It is not here necessary to examine in detail the causes which led to the American Revolution. In their immediate occasion they were largely economic. The colonists objected to the navigation laws which interfered with their trade, they denied the power of Parliament to impose taxes which they were obliged to pay, and they therefore resisted the royal governors and the royal forces which were sent to secure obedience to these laws. But the conviction is inescapable that a new civilization had come, a new spirit had arisen on this side of the Atlantic more advanced and more developed in its regard for the rights of the individual than that which characterized the Old World. Life in a new and open country had aspirations which could not be realized in any subordinate position. A separate establishment was ultimately inevitable. It had been decreed by the very laws of human nature. Man everywhere has an unconquerable desire to be the master of his own destiny. - CALVIN COOLIDGE
