Van Gaal SAID EVERYTHING WAS AGAINST US Louis Van Gaal said still being in the FA Cup was the most important thing for Manchester United after drawing at Cambridge. Louis Van Gaal claimed “everything was against us” following Manchester United’s goalless draw against Cambridge in the FA Cup, a result that earned the League Two side a lucrative replay at Old Trafford following a remarkably courageous performance. United dominated the second half but were undone by their slow start to the fourth-round tie, with Van Gaal ruing his side’s early malaise. The Dutchman blamed the pitch and the referee although he praised Cambridge’s organised display. “Every aspect of a match is against us,” said Van Gaal, who rested Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata for the tie. “We have to come here, the pitch isn’t so good, that can influence that you can play in another style. The opponents always give a lot more than they normally give and defending is always easier than attacking. Then you have seen the referee ...

Manchester United Team news ahead of the trip to the Loftus Road this weekend!!! INJURY UPDATE!!! -Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie is a doubt for Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash against QPR. -The Dutchman was withdrawn during the defeat to Southampton with an ankle injury but Louis Van Gaal has told MUTV this is only a minor problem, suggesting that his countryman could still be involved at Loftus Road. "It's not worse. Only Van Persie is maybe injured but it is a minor injury. I don't think it's a great problem." Louis Van Gaal. -Ashley Young remains in the treatment room with a hamstring strain which is likely to keep him out for a few more weeks. THE PREVIOUS MEETING!! -We meet again: United are unbeaten against QPR since New Year's Day 1992 and earlier this season the Reds strolled to a 4-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and maiden United strikes for Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria. .
Man United's agony: 6 strikers and not a single shot on goal! How could a front six including Angel Di Maria, Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata fail to get a single shot on target in a 1-0 home defeat by Southmapton? Saints sub Tadic sinks United, Arsenal cruise That was the question that Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal would have been wrestling with over his Sunday supper. On paper it looks a formidable array of attacking talent, especially with wing backs Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw providing width on the lush Old Trafford turf. Yet the reality was worrying. Following an impressive climb up the table after a slow start to the season under Dutchman Van Gaal, United have managed only one win in their last five and the goals have dried up. Since a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on December 26, they drew 0-0 with Tottenham Hotspur, 1-1 with Stoke City and on Sunday lost to Southampton in the league for the first time in 27 years. Despite having plenty of possession they created preciou ...
Manchester United's stats show how far they still have to go before they can get back to the top Louis Van Gaal was insistent Manchester United were the dominant team. He even brought out that old insult about the opponents ‘coming for a draw’ – a line that sounds weak after a share of the points and worse after they’ve gone home with all three. United skipper Wayne Rooney promptly went further. “I think we deserved to win,” he told Sky Sports. Players and managers are entitled to put a positive spin on things, but this felt dangerously close to ignoring the obvious. For while, Juan Mata squandered two good openings as well as a more difficult chance, this was still the first time United have failed to register a shot on target since April 2012 at Manchester City. It was the first time they’d done so at Old Trafford since May 2009. Those dates might surprise some given David Moyes’ record-busting efforts for much of last season. Indeed, it was something of a shock to discover Southampton h ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has revealed the reason for Angel Di Maria missing the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle. The Argentina international had only returned to action last weekend in the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa after spending a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. However, Di Maria was surprisingly absent from the matchday squad for the visit of Alan Pardew's Magpies on Friday, as the Red Devils ran out 3-1 victors led by inspirational skipper Wayne Rooney. Van Gaal explained after the game that the club's record signing had pulled up in training on Christmas Eve, which resulted in his omission at Old Trafford. The Dutchman toldMUTV: "In the last training session, he [Di Maria] stepped out of the warming up. "It was a little bit amazing because he did everything very well, but he stepped out and now we have to wait and see for the analysis." Van Gaal also provided updates on Adnan Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, with the injured quartet in line to r ...
Tottenham v Man Utd preview Last Updated: 08:54 28/12/14 Manchester United face a tough trip to White Hart Lane for their final Premier League match of 2014. Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham have won their last four games in all competitions, and their last three Premier League fixtures all by a 2-1 scoreline - they are also unbeaten in their last four meetings with Man Utd. However, Louis Van Gaal’s team have an in-form Wayne Rooney in a settled role and in the mood to punish opponents having scored 11 goals in his last 13 games for club and country. Rooney was in spectacular form on Boxing Day, scoring two and providing another as United overturned Newcastle 3-1 at Old Trafford, and the Englishman faces some favoured opposition in Spurs. He has nine goals in his last 13 appearances against the north London side, while United have not lost in their last 13 trips to White Hart Lane. A win could push Spurs into the top four as Pochettino looks to distance himself from mid-table. Team news Hugo Lloris is ...
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew rued an early penalty decision that went against his side at Manchester United on Friday.Pardew's men ultimately lost 3-1 at Old Trafford following two goals from Wayne Rooney and a Robin Van Persie header, but things could have been much different after an incident in the 14th minute. While attempting to collect a lofted pass, Yoan Gouffran found himself tripped inside the United area by Juan Mata, denying what Pardew felt was a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Yet referee Mike Jones opted against awarding a penalty and, although Newcastle did later score from the spot through Papiss Cisse in the 87th minute, Pardew was left wondering what might have been. He told reporters: "I thought we started the game well and the referee has made a bad call early, because I think that is a penalty. "It's a goal-scoring opportunity, so you have to say that was clumsy and a penalty. I was disappointed with that. "But the cutting edge was the difference between the two teams - they . ...
Manchester United kept in touch with the top two courtesy of a straightforward 3-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Club captain Wayne Rooney scored two goals midway through the first half, and then turned provider shortly after the break to set up Robin Van Persie with a 53rd-minute header. There was no repeat of the dramatic late win for United in the corresponding fixture on Boxing Day two years ago, despite Papiss Cisse pulling one back from the penalty spot in the closing stages

United have not lost at home since opening day, and while their defence continues to look far from safe, their scope of attacking options have the capability of killing opponents. Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Michael Carrick as the "the best English player in the game" and poured praise on the progress made by Louis Van Gaal's squad during his first few months in charge at Old Trafford.Carrick has been a hugely influential figure for United since his return from injury, excelling in both a central-midfield role and in an emergency defensive position, with the coach who signed him from Tottenham in 2006 serving up platitudes in an interview with BT Sport. While Carrick was afforded the most lavish of praise by Ferguson, Wayne Rooney also merited a positive mention and there were also words of encouragement for in-form keeper David De Gea. "I think Michael Carrick is the best English centre-midfield player, the best English player in the game," said Ferguson. "Robin Van Persie -- the World Cup maybe [took] a little bit out of him but you watch him in the second half [of the season] -- he'll be fine. Rooney's back flying, and Rooney will always get you a goal. And the one that's most p ...
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...
Falcao ready to fight for starting place Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao is relishing the competition for places up front alongside Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and James Wilson. The Colombian has made three substitute appearances since returning from a troublesome calf injury in November's victory over Hull City at Old Trafford, most recently stepping off the bench to help consolidate Sunday’s entertaining 3-0 win over Liverpool. Now that he is approaching full fitness, Falcao is determined to regain a starting place in Louis Van Gaal's team but readily admits he must earn that opportunity. "I feel ready for the moment that the team needs me," the 28-year- old told the Press Association. "Whenever I have the opportunity to come on, I try to do my best for the coach [Van Gaal] and I try to help the team. We talk a lot, the coach and I. He has a philosophy that I respect. I have had an injury and I have had to wait for the opportunity to play. "I am almost at 100 per cent now, so let's wait an ...

Man United v Liverpool rivalry in quotes Manchester United host Liverpool on Sunday as one of world football's bitterest rivalries is renewed at Old Trafford. Unlike last season's corresponding fixture, United are ahead of Liverpool again in the Premier League table and victory will extend their advantage up to 10 points. Here's a quick look back at some of the telling remarks that have helped add fuel to the rivalry's fire over the years: Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Liverpool: 'My greatest challenge is not what's happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their f*g perch. And you can print that.' Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on the magnitude of the rivalry: “Maybe Barca and Madrid is up there, but, for me, Liverpool versus Man U is the biggest game because the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and these are the two most successful clubs." Reds captain Wayne Rooney: "I grew up an Everton fan, my whole family are Everton fans and I ...
Manchester United recorded a fourth win in a row for the first time since December 2013 with a 2-1 triumph over Stoke City at a chilly Old Trafford on Tuesday night. Marouane Fellaini’s first-half header and Juan Mata’s free-kick - from which Marcos Rojo tried to claim a decisive touch - ensured the Reds collected another three points, although, not for the first time this season, an inspired moment from David De Gea was needed to safeguard the victory. Steven Nzonzi equalised for the Potters before the break and Mame Biram Diouf almost did the same, twice, in the dying seconds of the game but was thwarted by the Reds' no.1 and then an Ashley Young goal-line clearance. The absence of the injured Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria from United's team-sheet may have given the visitors a lift, but Asmir Begovic threatened to ruin a fairly trouble-free opening for Stoke with a careless pass to Robin Van Persie. The Stoke goalkeeper's blushes were spared when Ander Herrera scooped over from the Dutchman’s pa ...
Manchester United beat struggling Hull City 3-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. The home side surprised many by switching to a flat back four from the three-man defence they utilised in their 2-1 win at Arsenal last weekend. But that change had no impact on United's fluency as they dominated proceedings right from the kick-off, and it was no real surprise when centre-back Smalling gave them a 16th-minute lead following a Juan Mata corner on the left. The England international reacted quickest after seeing his initial header at the back post palmed away by Allan McGregor in the Tigers goal, before poking the ball over a crowded goal-line. However, it still needed referee Anthony Taylor to consult his watch before being given the go-ahead to award the goal, with TV replays subsequently confirming that the whole of the ball had indeed just crossed the goal-line. And despite United losing influential playmaker Angel Di Maria early o ...
Steve Bruce has revealed that the biggest threat to Hull City's hopes of getting a winner at Old Trafford are: Wayne Rooney and Fellaini... Hull City travel to OT tomorrow & we expect United to score big in order to kill, once and for all, that glimmer of confidence some teams had developed that they could win at the Theatre of Dreams! In Captain Fantastic, United have build the perfect counter attack, pairing him with Maestro Di Maria, whose creative play and speed have proven successful. With attack-minded back wingers (thank you Valencia & Shaw), it's very hard to anticipate the forward movement at United at the moment. The missing piece is a strong, decisive striker and we expect Falcao to do fill in RVP's boots, which deserve a rest. In the back movement, it's easy to see why they'd consider Marouane Fellaini a threat, but should Ander Herrera return, United have a combat midfield to stop the attack and supply the forwards and the threat will move to Herrera. What format should Van Gall use against H ...
welcome marinka sports news Arsene Wenger says Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has been playing with a point to prove as he prepares for his first reunion with former club Manchester United on Saturday. Welbeck has impressed for the Gunners since his £16 million ($25.1 million, 20 million euros) transfer deadline day switch from United. The England international's five goals in 12 appearances have gone some way to silencing the critics, including United boss Louis Van Gaal, who said Welbeck wasn't up to the standard required at Old Trafford. Arsenal manager Wenger knows he has benefitted from Welbeck's determination to show he can make it at the highest level and he expects the forward, a boyhood United fan who had been at the club for 11 years, to be fully motivated when United come to the Emirates Stadium this weekend. "You can take every challenge in a positive way and that is what Danny did," Wenger said. "You have to understand Louis Van Gaal did not have Welbeck under his command for a long time and ...

The winners & losers of Louis Van Gaal's Manchester United reign. | David De Gea | A by-product of Manchester United’s leaky, threadbare defence has been the rise to prominence of De Gea. There were once question marks over the Spaniard’s ability but a string of brilliant, match-winning performances filled with incredible reflex saves has established him as one of the Premier League’s best keepers. | Robin Van Persie | When Van Gaal was announced as Manchester United manager, the automatic assumption was that Van Persie would skipper the side. But, instead, Wayne Rooney was given the armband and since that snub the former Arsenal striker has struggled for form, scoring just once in his last five games and routinely subbed off in matches – even when United need a goal! | David Moyes | After racking up a host of unwanted records while at Old Trafford, Moyes’s reputation was at an all-time low – at least until Van Gaal’s arrival. The Dutchman’s struggles – he has overseen United’s worst s ...
MOUNTING INJURY CRISIS AND RISING HOPE OF RETURN OF PLAYERS IN OLD TRAFFORD. The wish and expectation of Manchester United club and its fan is the quick recovery and return of the trio of Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Phil Jones to the team. The high hope is most expected now, especially as the Red Devils look forward to the crucial clash with their arch rival, Manchester City on Sunday. According to the Telegraph, the Red Devils skipper suffered a foot injury during training and was seen limping off the training ground. Rooney has just completed his three match ban following the red card he picked for lashing out against Stewart Downing during the game against West Ham United. The captain was expected to return to his club for the Manchester Derby, but is now doubtful after picking up the injury in training. Report has it that the Three Lions captain who attended a commercial event at Old Trafford was seen in considerable discomfort at the end of the occasion with the rest of the first-team members .. ...
Manchester United vs Chelsea: Preview:Chelsea head to Old Trafford on Sunday looking to maintain their excellent start to the 2014-15 season that has seen them win seven of their opening eight Premier League games. Whilst the Blues were in UEFA Champions League action midweek, they only played 24 hours after Manchester United, who drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Monday night football. Louis Van Gaal’s side have been up and down, and whilst they have only lost one of their last seven in the league, they haven’t faced too many top half candidates, and have looked woeful defensively in just about every game. Team News Manchester United Jonny Evans and Paddy McNair missed Monday’s draw at West Brom but may be fit for this game. Both certainly won’t play as right-footed centre- backs – Louis Van Gaal has Marcos Rojo as the left-footed left centre-back, and Tyler Blackett can back him up. Midfielders Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard are still sidelined whilst Wayne Rooney serves the final of his ...

Its the big one in the Premiership; Man Utd vs Chelsea at Old Trafford will be without skipper Wayne Rooney as he serves the final of his three- game ban following his sending off against West Ham earlier this month. Angel Di Maria has been passed fit despite picking up a minor knock last time out while Ander Herrera has also been declared fit to start despite a niggling rib problem. Radamel Falcao is expected to come back in to the starting eleven with Adnan Januzaj the man most likely to make way. Michael Carrick isn’t in contention as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following five months out. Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of star striker Diego Costa as he battles with a troublesome hamstring strain but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start on Sunday. Loic Remy is out with a groin injury but Ramires, Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel could all return to the squad. Ander Herrera has hailed Manchester United’s forward line, insisting that the club have the three best strikers in the world at their disposal. Louis Van Gaal recruited Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day, with the Colombia international joining fellow strikers Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford. Falcao forged a reputation as one of the deadliest strikers in the world during his spells at Atletico Madrid and Monaco, leaving Herrera in awe at the firepower available to Van Gaal, though he remains acutely aware of the need to increase his own goal tally as the season progresses
GBAM!!! Manchester United will have to pay Real Madrid about £80m to sign former winger Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, who would also demand close to £20m in Manchester City have made an official enquiry for Borussia Dortmund's German midfielder Marco Reus, 25, and have asked for updates over his availability. Monaco are still interested in signing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, despite missing out on the 28- year-old during last year's summer transfer window. Paris St-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 33, has disagreed with Arsene Wenger's suggestion that he was close to joining Arsenal. PSG and Real Madrid are both monitoring the contract talks of Liverpool's 19-year-old winger Raheem Sterling. Liverpool have started talks over extending midfielder Jordan Henderson's contract beyond the end of next season. MONACO DROPS HINT FOR ROONEY`S SIGNATURE. The Ligue 1 side went on a spending spree ahead of the 2013-14 campaign that saw the likes of Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho move to Stade Louis II. Despite that heavy investment, Monaco could only place second in Ligue 1 last term and Rodriguez has since secured a big-money move to European champions Real Madrid, while Falcao moved on loan to Manchester United. Monaco took a more prudent approach in the last transfer window, but Vasilyev did not rule out the possibility of spending big again in the future. Indeed, the 49-year-old claimed Monaco were in talks to sign a star player from England's top flight 12 months ago, reported to be United captain Wayne Rooney who was rumoured to be unsettled at Old Trafford under David Moyes. Rooney has since signed a bumper new deal at United last February, and is a key figure in Louis Van Gaal's Old Trafford plans, but Vasilyev's latest comments have led to speculation in the British press that Monaco coul ...
Wayne Rooney's dismissal against West Ham United last week may have put Manchester United at a disadvantage in that game but it has done Louis Van Gaal a favour in the long-term. The captain has moved close to 'undroppable' status at Old Trafford and any attempt to dislodge him from the lineup would be more trouble than it's worth. His suspension, however, meant that Van Gaal must pick a team without him and in doing so create a way of playing that does not serve only to indulge his skipper. Rooney, as one of three up front, is neither clever enough as a creator nor dynamic enough as a striker to deserve that sort of treatment. It was against Everton that it was proven that United are no worse off for his absence and other players could actually benefit from not having him around. Juan Mata was the man squeezed out when Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria were summoned from Jorge Mendes's portfolio in late summer. Instead of being incompatible with the two, Mata proved against Everton that he possesses the ...

Gallery: Di Maria visits United's museum Our no.7, Angel Di Maria, visited the award-winning Manchester United Museum at Old Trafford this week to learn more about the legendary shirt he now wears. United's Argentinian star was joined at the Museum by team-mate David De Gea, and you can view a gallery of their visit by clicking the main image above. Angel said: "It was great to visit the museum and learn about the club’s history. It's an honour to wear the no.7 shirt that legends like George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo wore – I hope one day to also be considered a hero for the fans, just like they are." As well as the history of some of United's most talented no.7s, current exhibitions include a look at Best's incredible career, celebrating 10 years of Wayne Rooney and a fascinating examination of wartime United. The Manchester United Museum is free to enter until the end of October, so everyone can learn all about the greatest football story ever told. Fans can complete th ...

Danny Welbecks £16million fee is a "disgrace"says former Man Utd star Dwight Yorke Louis Van Gaal delivered a withering assessment of Welbeck’s ability when explaining his reasons for selling him last month. The United manager claimed that his strike- rate simply failed to live up to the standards set by Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. Following the loan signing of Radamel Falcao, Van Gaal decided that there was no room for Welbeck at Old Trafford. Yorke believes United should have brokered a similar loan deal for Welbeck – or at least demanded a higher fee in a summer that saw fellow England internationals Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana move for £27million and £25million respectively. “£16million – that’s a disgrace,” he said, as reported in the Manchester Evening News. “When Lallana and Shaw have gone for £25million and £27million, that’s pathetic. “That’s why I cannot understand the market. He had to be a loan deal – especially with Falcao not signing permanently. “You coul ...
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has suggested Juan Mata and Paddy McNair will start Sunday's Barclays Premier League fixture against Everton. Spanish schemer Mata is favourite to replace suspended skipper Wayne Rooney in the no.10 role while McNair is set to retain his place after an impressive debut against West Ham last weekend, with Phil Jones not yet fit. The boss is hoping the injury situation clears up over the international break but is looking forward to seeing how his side performs against the Merseysiders at Old Trafford. "Juan Mata has played very well in his [Rooney's] position," stated Van Gaal at the pre-match press conference. "I have to choose. I will miss Wayne because he is the captain of the team but Mata can also play very well. "We still have three central defenders injured so he [McNair] shall play. He is the only player who can play in the right-sided defensive position. I chose him last week and he was very good. It's difficult for a player like him to maintain that level ...
Each result for Louis Van Gaal's Manchester United is met with a combination of reactions stating that they will now finally begin their title charge, and others who insist it served to highlight persisting flaws. Last week's unconvincing 2-1 win over West Ham wasn't helped by Wayne Rooney's impetuous and unnecessary kick out at Stewart Downing for which he was sent off, but the Hammers were already back in the game by that point. Everton visit Old Trafford this weekend hoping to pick up form that leaves them with only 6 points from 6 games and wallowing just above the relegation zone. They have conceded the most goals in the league (14), after having taken 15 games to concede that many last season.
LONDON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal may have watched on somewhat uncomfortably as Danny Welbeck grabbed a superb Champions League hat-trick for Arsenal on Wednesday. Deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford after the arrival of Colombian Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco, Welbeck has hit the ground running in north London after Van Gaal off-loaded him for 16 million pounds ($25.8 million). Falcao, Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney have made little impact in United's worst start to a Premier League season since its inception in 1992. ...

5 THINGS WE LEARNT FROM LAST GAME Fighting spirit hasn't gone anywhere After conceding a shambolic goal and losing their captain to a red card, the Reds could easily have sulked their way to dropping points against the Hammers. But there were no signs of that in the second half as Louis Van Gaal saw his team put in a tremendous effort to hold on for the victory. It wasn't pretty at times against opposition determined on playing direct, but it doesn't need to be when you're picking up a much-needed, confidence-boosting win. United might not be at their best, but the spirit that has seen them lift countless trophies over the years hasn't gone missing. Wayne Rooney will be missed Rooney will always face intense scrutiny due to his standing in the Old Trafford dressing room but, prior to his sending off, the skipper had justified his inclusion ahead of Juan Mata in that deep-lying forward role. He chased, harried, created, and scored a wonderful goal to hand United the lead. It is that sort of contribution th ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is mulling over a selection dilemma ahead of Sunday’s trip to Leicester City in the Barclays Premier League with five goal-thirsty strikers jostling for just two places in his starting team. Asked if Van Persie and Falcao can play together, Van Gaal said: “I don't think that Falcao interferes with Van Persie or that he interferes with Falcao. Falcao is a very good striker, I already said that when he came here in his first press conference. “I like Van Persie as well - he is also a very good striker,” the boss continued. “Then we have Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj, and we also have James Wilson. We have five players for the two striker positions and I have to choose.” Expanding on Januzaj’s limited game time this season - which was just one of the reasons behind his hat-trick appearance in Monday’s Under-21s clash with Sunderland - Van Gaal explained the Belgian must show patience and earn his place in the team. “He has to compete with very good ...
Angel Di Maria celebrates his first goal for Manchester United with Wayne Rooney after putting his new side into the lead at Old Trafford
Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney & Juan Mata were on target for the Red Devils at Old Trafford
Report: United 4 QPR 0 Manchester United sealed a first win of the 2014/15 season on Sunday - and in some style - as the Reds, inspired by new signing Angel Di Maria, romped to a 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford. Di Maria, playing his first match for the Reds in front of the home crowd, was in sizzling form throughout and kicked off the scoring on 24 minutes with a curling free-kick. He played a part in United's second goal from Ander Herrera, before Wayne Rooney added a third before half-time. Di Maria then set up Juan Mata for a fourth after almost an hour. It was a day of debuts at Old Trafford as Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao, who began the game on the bench, all made their United bows. There were also welcome returns from injury for Rafael and Herrera, while there was a return of a different sort as Rio Ferdinand came back for his first match since his summer departure. In tribute to 12 years of service, the defender was presented with a memento of his time at United by ...
Rio: I'll take Rooney out at the neck! How Rio Ferdinand intends to stop Wayne Rooney tomorrow at Old Trafford.
When United line up against QPR on Sept. 14 at Old Trafford, Louis Van Gaal will have RVP, Wayne Rooney and Falcao to choose from up top.
The hope is that given more responsibility and a central role at the Emirates he will thrive and become a finisher. The 23-year- old has always impressed with work rate and general play now the challenge for him is to prove he can lead an attack. Welbeck will have an impressive supporting cast at Arsenal in Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott, all world class players. This is Welbeck’s chance to emerge from the shadow of Wayne Rooney and shine as a front line striker rather than the bit-part player he had been reduced to at Old Trafford.
FOOTBALL £350,000 a week! Van Gaal rolls the dice with a massive outlay for Falcao Manchester United have taken an incredible £24m gamble on Radamel Falcao firing them back into the Champions League. United are understood to have agreed to pay Colombia striker Falcao an eye-watering £350,000 a week - £120,000 more than top earner Wayne Rooney. Falcao, 28, only agreed to join United on a season-long loan if they matched his £10m a year tax free salary at Monaco. To ensure he is on the same £184,000-a-week 'take home' wages in Britain, United have to pay him around £350,000. That works out at £18m a year on top of his £6m loan fee and the huge investment underlines United's desperation to return to European football's top table next season. But club insiders claim they can easily afford the wages after signing massive sponsorship deals worth over £1bn with Chevrolet and Adidas in the last year. And they anticipate shirt sales will go through the roof at Old Trafford with the signing of one of Euro ...

Millions of Reds all over the world are united today in condemnation of a dire opening day performance from Louis Van Gaal’s side. The 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City in front of a packed Old Trafford shattered hopes that a return to the glory days are just around the corner following last season’s sorry showing. Hopes were high going into the new season following the arrival of Van Gaal. But the display against a solid, but hardly sensational, Swansea was a total let down. Certain players – Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Javier Hernandez, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and, of course, Nani – should hang their heads in shame. You wonder just how bad the Reds would be without the newly-appointed skipper Wayne Rooney. Sadly, only the England striker out of this sorry bunch of a squad would be an automatic choice for City or Chelsea, who are sure to be contesting the Premier League title. And arguably hardly any other of the United starting XI would make the Arsenal or even Liverpool teams in c ...
Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City: Sigurdsson condemns Van Gaal to opening day defeat The Iceland international struck late on to give Garry Monk's men a famous victory, despite Wayne Rooney cancelling out Ki Sung-Yueng's first-half opener with an acrobatic strike Gylfi Sigurdsson's smart finish saw Swansea Cityclaim a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United as the Louis Van Gaal era started in defeat. Sigurdsson bagged the winner 18 minutes from time on Saturday as Van Gaal - tasked with improving the fortunes at Old Trafford after David Moyes' disastrous spell in charge last term - endured a day he will want to forget in his opening Premier League fixture. The Dutchman's 3-4-1-2 system did not appear to suit United despite being used in pre-season and they found themselves behind when Ki Sung-Yueng scored from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark. Van Gaal, known for his tinkering, swapped to 4-4-1-1 in the second half and it appeared to be the tonic for United's response, led by new captain Wayne R . ...
Van Gaal rues United performance Louis Van Gaal was disappointed with his Manchester United side's disjointed display after Swansea won 2-1 to gatecrash his first Premier League match at Old Trafford. Ki Sung-yueng stunned the expectant United fans by handing the visitors a first-half lead, before newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney scooped an overhead kick home from close range to level the scores after the break. But just when United were expected to go on and secure the victory Gylfi Sigurdsson bundled the past David De Gea, who should have done better, to get Van Gaal's reign off to a losing start. "We didn't reach the level we have shown in the past matches and that is disappointing because this is the most important match," Van Gaal told BT Sport 1. "We were disappointing in defence and we are disappointed with ourselves and that's why we lost today." The Dutch boss, who has won league titles with every club side he has managed so far in his career, quickly batted away suggestions that the opening- ...
Manchester United have announced their squad numbers for the 2014-15 campaign, with Adnan Januzaj taking the No.11 shirt. The Belgium international inherits the number vacated by the recently retired Ryan Giggs, who ended one of the most decorated ever playing careers to become Louis Van Gaal's assistant manager this summer. New midfield signing Ander Herrera takes the No.21, while £30m teenager Luke Shaw is handed the No.3 as he succeeds Juventus-bound Patrice Evra. The club's legendary No.7 shirt remains vacant, having been given up by Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia over a year ago, and could yet be filled by transfer target Juan Cuadrado. There is also no No.9 listed by Van Gaal's side, with newly confirmed captain Wayne Rooney keeping his No.10. Retaining their squad numbers are the likes of Anderson, Wilfried Zaha and Marouane Fellaini, all of whom have been linked with moves away from Old Trafford this summer. SQUAD NUMBERS IN FULL: 1. Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit. But it seems Class of '92 team-mate Gary Neville is already looking to cool him down, after throwing an ice bucket over him. Scholes, who upset Wayne Rooney earlier this summer with his scathing views, joined Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and a host of other Old Trafford favourites for a charity game against non-league Salford City on Thursday night. Neville threw the ice bucket over Scholes as part of a charity cause for the James McCarthy Foundation - not the Everton midfielder, but a young man who suffered a brain tumour in a car accident and wants to complete his 'bucket list' - and the Former United midfielder apparently requested that Darren Fletcher be next in line to be soaked. The Former England midfielder will embark on his latest career turn next week as a pundit for BT Sport in their Premier League curtain-raiser between United and Swansea. England striker Wayne Rooney capped off Manchester United’s pre-season trip to the USA by leading the Reds to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the International Champions Cup. Rooney, who was also named as the player of the tournament, captained United in the fifth and final match of their tour as new boss Louis Van Gaal continues his impressive start to life at Old Trafford. And Rooney scored United’s first goal of the night by volleying home a cross from Javier Hernandez to equalise an earlier penalty from Liverpool and Former England captain Steven Gerrard. Read the full report here:
Louis Van Gaal has named Wayne Rooney as Manchester United skipper for the International Champions Cup final against Liverpool in Miami this evening. The England international has been tipped to inherit the Old Trafford captaincy full time following the departure of Nemanja Vidic and is seemingly in Van Gaal's thoughts in regards to the leadership role. With Danny Welbeck carrying a knock, Javier Hernandez will partner Rooney up front, while Ander Herrera is selected as part of United's five-man midfield as they persist with Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation. Rickie Lambert is the only one of Liverpool's six summer signings to be included in their starting XI for the encounter at the Sun Life Stadium, which Daniel Sturridge misses after flying home injured.
Rio Ferdinand has urged Roy Hodgson to pick Wayne Rooney as England captain following Steven Gerrard's international retirement. - Cox: Gerrard exit could bring change Ferdinand, who joined Queens Park Rangers this summer after 12 years at Manchester United, described his former club and country teammate as "the most influential player England have got." Ferdinand played alongside Rooney at Old Trafford for a decade and added: "Wayne is growing into that role. He's experienced now. He has played at the top level and won a lot of things. He knows the game. He's got the right tools for that. "You look at other countries and the natural progression would be Wayne getting it now. With other countries it's usually the guy with the most caps, or who is most influential, and Wayne is the most influential player England have got now Steven Gerrard has gone. You also have to look at who is going to start." Ferdinand, meanwhile, believes there is too much pressure put on England captains. "We maybe go a bit overboa ...
Old Trafford side offer Juventus star a massive reason to consider a Premier League switch. Man United continue to pursue Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and as well as launching a fresh £40m bid the Old Trafford side are also set to offer the Chilean a massive contract according to the Daily Express . Boss Louis Van Gaal is keen to add some creativity to his midfield and will hand the former Bayer Leverkusen man a massive £200k a week deal that would see Vidal earn the same as Robin Van Persie, with only England man Wayne Rooney being paid more at the Premier League outfit. Comments made by Juventus director Pavel Nedved would suggest that a move for Vidal was plausible with the former Czech Republic star stating temptingly; "Our strategy is clear; we want to keep all our best players, including Vidal and Pogba. "We don't want to sell anyone, especially Vidal. "Certainly, if there were a high bid for them, we'd have to think about it." Such a contract offer would c ...

Manchester United have confirmed that Wayne Rooney may be on his way out of old Trafford after he was caught trying to lick the transfer window
It's a little bizarre that a team that has Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez in it looked like such a damp squib last season. They have so much fire-power, but still somehow lack cutting edge. The only possible deduction, is that they're not getting the service they need to keep producing the goods. I can't help but feel that Manchester United were massively let down by their wingers last season. With Nani desperately trying to make as little impact as possible at Old Trafford and Ashley Young doing his best to copy him, it's clear that this is a problem position for Manchester United. It's not like any of the club's other options are providing the goods either. Whilst Antonio Valencia is still capable of the occasional good game, he's also largely inconsistent. I wouldn't be surprised if Louis Van Gaal has made signing a world class winger his top summer priority. After all, adding a little more threat down the flanks could breathe fresh life into this Manchester United side. It could w ...

A year ago, Adnan Januzaj was yet to make a single appearance in professional football. Today, with four goals and 35 games under his belt, he is undoubtedly Manchester United’s breakout star. Before last summer's pre-season tour antics and an encouraging first-team debut in the Community Shield, whispers of a teenage sensation with unprecedented style and grace were growing by the decibel around Old Trafford. By October, after netting a headline-stealing brace at Sunderland, the secret was finally out. Adnan was a bona fide star and claimed our Player of the Month award for October, beating fellow nominees Wayne Rooney and David De Gea with 42 per cent of votes cast. A second prize was won in January, when the 19-year-old cast his eye towards an even brighter future: “I have played many games but I think there is more to come. I hope to win trophies at this club and be the best player.” The chance to win the League Cup was denied by a shootout defeat to Sunderland, with Januzaj one of four Reds to ...
Van Gaal could be a curse Van Gaal is known all over the world for high-profile face-offs with players and establishments alike. At Barcelona he fell out with top star Rivaldo and also fell out with the club in his second stint. Van Gaal also fell out with Ribery and Luca Toni at Bayern Munich before falling out with the Munich hierarchy the following season, which led to his eventual dismissal. His second stint at Ajax in the technical director capacity also ended due to internal conflict. Fans must pray that this side of Van Gaal is not seen at Old Trafford, considering the kind of season the last one was. Another year or two of high-profile behind the scenes bust-ups is not needed. What is needed right now is his vast experience as a father figure, especially in handling players like Wayne Rooney. Van Gaal may well be past his best. Like Jose Mourinho says, football is a game of winning and once you stop winning you are no longer up there. It must be taken into account that 15 of Louis’s 19 major hon ...
Danny Welbeck has hit back at Former Manchester United manager David Moyes for criticising his training regime. Moyes in a December press conference suggested that Welbeck was failing to put in maximum effort during his Carrington sessions. Moyes claimed: "We had a word with Welbeck about a month ago and we said that he needs to be the last off the training field. Wayne Rooney is out there practising his finishing each day and I said: 'Danny, you need to be out there every day finishing, even if it's 15 minutes at the end'." However Welbeck, who has been linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford, has finally broken his silence on the issue, claiming: "I was pretty surprised (at that) to be honest. "Before he made that statement I was doing extra training. Maybe he just didn't see it. I've grown up at Manchester United and been professional all through my career and I always do extra work. "It's born and bred in me to do extra work after training and maybe he wasn't seeing that extra stuff. I was do ...
Manchester United striker seeking Old Trafford exit The summer is going to be massive for Manchester United. The new manager, Louis Van Gaal will be given a hefty transfer war-chest and there will plenty of ins and outs. At least, we expect that to happen. One of the players who might leave the club is young striker Danny Welbeck. The 23-year-old, who graduated from the club’s youth academy, is frustrated with the limited chances and the frequency with which he has been played out of position at Manchester United. Welbeck spoke for the first time about the uncertainty of his future is still contemplating leaving the club, despite the new appointment of a new manager. “I’d like to play centrally,” he said as quoted in The Guardian. “I’ve been playing on the left for a while and it’s got to the time when I want to stake a place up front.” And Welbeck understands his chances to cement the place as a central striker next season is equally slim. Already the competition is provided by Wayne Roon ...
The former Everton forward has played a huge number of matches since bursting onto the scene at a young age and his former team-mate feels that his best may be behind him Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is concerned Wayne Rooney may be past his peak after playing too many games since his meteoric rise to prominence as a teenager. The 28-year-old made his Premier League debut at the age of 16 before moving to Old Trafford as an 18-year-old, but has come increasingly under the microscope ahead of the World Cup. With a huge burden of expectation on his shoulders for both club and country, along with the sheer quantity of matches that he has played, Scholes is worried Rooney may have reached his best earlier than expected. "Wayne was in the Everton team at 16 years of age, in 2003," the Former United midfielder wrote in a blog for Paddy Power. "Since then he's played at Euro 2004, two World Cups, Premier League and Champions League every year at United. "There's a chance he's worn out. "Wayne's peak may ...
I remember saying it here and some of you are my witness, I said Mata was not the player we were in need of since in him we had Rooney and Shinji Kagawa and here it is Louis Van Gaal confirms that: Man Utd's Louis Van Gaal ready to part with Juan Mata as Barcelona line up £40m bid Juan Mata could be one of the first victims of Louis Van Gaal's new Manchester United regime as Barcelona line up a big-money move. Reports in Spanish paper AS claim that the Catalan giants are ready to pounce for the former Chelsea star as they look to rebuild their side under new boss Luis Enrique. A bid of £40million has been mooted for a player who only arrived at Old Trafford in January, and Dutchman Van Gaal, who is famous for his single-minded approach, is ready to listen to serious offers as he evaluates his new squad. The ex-Bayern Munich chief prefers to play with one playmaker behind the main striker, and with Wayne Rooney his obvious choice behind Robin Van Persie in attack, Mata could be sacrificed to raise funds ...
Louis Van Gaal vs. United ! Louis Van Gaal has faced Manchester United four times and, on every occasion, football fans have been treated to high-octane matches filled with goals and attacking endeavour. In September 1998, the Dutchman brought Barcelona to Old Trafford for a memorable Champions League tie. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs scored early goals but Sonny Anderson and Giovanni restored parity on the hour. David Beckham’s stunning free-kick was then cancelled out by Luis Enrique’s penalty, capping a wonderful 3-3 draw. Remarkably, the sides did it all again two months later. The Catalans led first through Anderson, only for Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole to put United ahead. Two Rivaldo goals then sandwiched Yorke’s second to clinch another entertaining 3-3 draw at Camp Nou. Eleven years later, in March 2010, Van Gaal’s Bayern Munich welcomed United to the Allianz Arena. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the first leg after just 66 seconds, before Franck Ribery's deflected free-kick set up a dr ...

And at the prospective fee, Shaw represents a bargain and coup because if fitness and contentment are retained the club may acquire a top-drawer performer for the next 15 years. 2 Mats HummelsBorussia Dortmund, £25m-30m Louis Van Gaal hopes to do much of his shopping in the Bundesliga and in Hummels the Dutchman sees a 25-year-old Germany central defender who can help fill the void left by the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. 3 Toni KroosBayern Munich, £30m Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos celebrates with the German Cup final trophy. The 24-year-old can operate in box-to-box mode, as a No10 ...

Man Utd v Hull Tonight 10:45pm Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs is hopeful Wayne Rooney will be fit after missing Saturday's defeat through illness and a groin strain. Robin Van Persie could return to the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute against Sunderland. Manchester United have won all five of their Premier League meetings with Hull. Hull have never won at Old Trafford in the league, with nine defeats and one draw in their 10 visits. Their only victory came in the third round of the FA Cup in 1952.
08/04/2014 08:51, Report by Adam Marshall Vote: Player of the Year It's voting time for Manchester United's Player of the Year with an open race for the coveted Sir Matt Busby trophy likely to unfold. You can choose from any current United player who has made at least one appearance during the 2013/2014 season for the award Robin Van Persie won last year. Wayne Rooney is bidding to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo by scooping the award for a third time after lifting it in 2008 and 2010. The Reds' no.10 is an outstanding candidate after earning three Player of the Month successes, but Adnan Januzaj triumphed in October and January and is another strong contender. David De Gea has won plenty of admirers with his stunning saves and consistency throughout the campaign and would be a popular choice after nailing down the no.1 position and emerging as one of the most talented goalkeepers in the world. January recruit Juan Mata has made an instant impression at Old Trafford and is another who has really endeared himsel ...
Wayne Rooney is doubtful for Manchester United's clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford but Robin Van Persie could make his return from a knee injury.
REDS GOSSIP United striker Wayne Rooney has asked senior club officials at Old Trafford not to appoint Van Gaal as manager. Rooney, 28, is not a fan of the Dutchman's hard-line methods. Louis Van Gaal's appointment as Manchester United manager is imminent after the Netherlands manager delayed naming his World Cup squad. Louis Van Gaal is poised to give Manchester United a list of transfer targets ahead of him becoming their next boss, including Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, 25, and midfielder Marco Reus, 24, along with Southampton's 18-year-old defender Luke Shaw.
Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored two goals apiece as the temporary reign of Ryan Giggs as manager of Manchester United began with a convincing 4-0 win against Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday. Read more here:
United 4 Norwich 0 Manchester United got Ryan Giggs’ tenure as interim manager off to the perfect start with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Norwich at Old Trafford. A pair of Wayne Rooney goals, the first from the penalty spot, in the minutes immediately before and after half-time set the Reds on their way and another double, from substitute Juan Mata, ensured that the Giggs era began with the victory craved by a packed Old Trafford. The new boss received a rapturous reception from the supporters more used to seeing him out on the pitch than in the dugout, but a determined Norwich side ensured that his side did not have it all their own way until Rooney broke the deadlock. Danny Welbeck, partnering Rooney in a 4-4-2 formation, had United’s best chance when his powerful shot from a tight angle forced Canaries’ keeper John Ruddy into a vital save at his near post. But when Welbeck was dragged down in the area by Steven Whittaker, Rooney sent Ruddy the wrong way from 12 yards to open the floodgates. Roon ...
The Match: Ryan off to a flyer The match: United were positive from the outset, but didn't quite play with the cutting edge that the fans wanted. Norwich’s intentions were clear – frustrate, soak it up and try to nick something if the moment came. Goals change games, as they say, and the penalty for United just before the break and the quick follow-up strike from Wayne Rooney early in the second period ensured mostly one-way traffic for the rest of the match. Once the deadlock was broken, the Reds played with confidence, and only a couple of spurned chances plus fine work from the rightly highly-rated John Ruddy kept it down to only 4-0. The goals: Rooney’s penalty was emphatic – firmly struck to Ruddy’s left, with the Norwich stopper diving the other way. For his follow-up, Rooney was given the freedom of the slick Old Trafford pitch, the Norwich defence allowing him to run across the face of the box before curling the ball in off the post. The furious reaction of the Canaries’ keeper spoke v ...
Ryan Giggs gave the Manchester United board food for thought as he enjoyed a dream debut in the home dugout at Old Trafford. • Brewin: New manager, old-style United? • Payne: Giggs brings joy after the division Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata both scored twice as Giggs oversaw a comfortable 4-0 win over Norwich. Giggs assumed temporary control of United on Tuesday following the sacking of David Moyes. Although the United board are searching for an experienced successor, Giggs has made no secret of his desire to become full-time manager. And the 40-year-old interim manager did his chances no harm with this display. Once United had put a slightly cumbersome first half behind them, they strolled to victory. And what is more, they did it with the style and panache that has been missing from the men in red for most of the season. There was no sign of the slow, tentative play United exhibited under Moyes. Instead, it was like the 1990s all over again. United played with fluency, width and potency - all component ...
Football - Premier League United hit four to give Giggs winning start Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 4 (Rooney 40’ pen 48’ Mata 64’ 73’) Norwich City 0 Ryan Giggs enjoyed his first win as Manchester United manager with a 4-0 victory over Norwich City. Giggs watched in a suit from the sidelines, having left himself out of the match day squad. He was joined in the dugout by Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville. United initially played much as they had for the whole season, struggling to find momentum or break the opposition down. Most of the play came down the right wing, with Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia sending in a number of poor crosses. Just before half time, Steven Whittaker brought down Danny Welbeck as he prepared to latch onto a loose ball Norwich failed to clear, and Wayne Rooney scored with a confident penalty. In the second half, Rooney took three minutes to extend the lead, curling in a fine shot from 25 yards. United regained some of their old confidence, and ...
After signing a monster new deal and leading United in goals and assists (with 17 each) Wayne Rooney is staying put and will go on to break the club's scoring records regardless of the team's overall success. The underrated, while sometimes wasteful, Danny Welbeck is a local lad and will be allowed to grow into an Old Trafford star over the coming years. That's as far as the striking certainties go, however, with question marks hanging over both Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez. RVP is still one of the deadliest strikers around but United have arguably played better in his absence this term and the Dutchman could be moved on to facilitate other players this summer. Chicharito is one of the best-loved players at Old Trafford but the Mexican is never going to get the minutes he desires and deserves in a Red Devils shirt and looks set to reluctantly move on in the coming months. Staying: Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck Going: Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez
Wayne Rooney starts for Manchester United as they attempt to book a last four spot at the expense of holders Bayern Munich. TEAM NEWS Bayern will be without three key midfielders for the quarter-final second leg, evenly poised after last week's 1-1 draw. Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended following his first leg sending-off, Javier Martinez also misses out through suspension, while a third key midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, is out injured. Manchester United have doubts over the fitness of Wayne Rooney, although the striker has travelled to Bavaria despite his injured toe, which was heavily bruised in last week's first leg at Old Trafford. Ashley Young is also doubtful after picking up a hand injury in the weekend's win over Newcastle in the Premier League. But experienced left-back Patrice Evra has indicated he expects to be fit enough to return to the side after missing the first leg through suspension and despite struggling with a knee problem. Moyes’ accidental Kagawa master-stroke and its effect on Bayern Munich Vincent Ralph22 hours ago 30 22 8 0 David Moyes was forced to bring on Shinji Kagawa earlier than expected for Manchester United on Tuesday, but it worked brilliantly. £25 free bet with WINNER: Bet on Man Utd to win Four wins from four matches – that was Shinji Kagawa’s outstanding record against Bayern Munich during his time at Borussia Dortmund. But when the German champions came to Old Trafford, the Japanese play-maker found himself back on the bench, much to the annoyance of a portion of Manchester United fans. But following an injury to the evergreen Ryan Giggs, Kagawa found his way on to the pitch perhaps earlier than David Moyes would have envisaged, only to have an impact that should not be understated. The sight of Kagawa standing on the side-lines ready to take to the field would have had an unnerving effect on some of those Bayern players who knew what he was capable of. After all, here was the player who had set up g ...
Man U vs Bayern For a short while an eccentric season for Manchester United featuring seven home defeats and more ignominy than David Moyes will want to remember was shaping up for a result that might have shifted the entire mood of the club. They had given everything, against superior opponents, and for eight minutes they led and Old Trafford, once again, felt like a happy place. Moyes will just wish his players could have done a better job of protecting their lead before Bayern Munich finally bared their teeth. Instead, Bastian Schweinsteiger's equaliser leaves the European champions in a position of strength going into the return leg. Yet not, perhaps, the position many people might have anticipated bearing in mind the ordeals United have suffered on this ground. The ruthless winning machine from Bavaria certainly did not get everything their own way. Schweinsteiger will be suspended next week after his challenge on Wayne Rooney late-on brought him a second yellow card of the night, and a booking for J ...
BBC ALLAN GREEN tells BBC Radio_5_live that: Wayne Rooney dived in the incident that saw Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger sent off at Old Trafford. Midfielder Schweinsteiger, 29, will miss the second leg in Germany next week after receiving two yellow cards. Rooney went down easily dived, ***"If you put it on the other side, let's say there had been a challenge by Nemanja Vidic on Arjen Robben and Robben went down as we know he can do - probably United fans would have been screaming abuse at Robben for getting Vidic sent off. I felt a little sorry for Schweinsteiger."
Champions League: How Bayern, Barca Held To First Leg Draws. Bayern Munich and Barcelona were held to 1-1 draws against Manchester United and Atletico Madrid respectively in their Champions League quarterfinal first legs played on Tuesday night Bayern, overwhelming favourites in the tie, dominated possession at Old Trafford but were left to rue their lack of cutting edge when Nemanja Vidic rose highest to head in Wayne Rooney's corner in the 58th minute. The holders hit back in the 67th minute with Bastian Schweinsteiger expertly steering home from a Mario Mandzukic knock-down. Schweinsteiger was sent off in the 90th minute for a second booking and will miss the return leg next week. Atletico substitute Diego opened the scoring at the Nou Camp with a sensational long-range strike for the La Liga leaders who lost top scorer Diego Costa with a hamstring injury in the 30th minute. Barcelona drew level in the 71st minute with Neymar meeting Iniesta's defence-splitting pass with a sublime first-time finish int ...
Wayne Rooney's goals against Aston Villa were his first at Old Trafford since he found the net in a 3-2 win over...
Wayne Rooney scored twice as Manchester United fought back to beat Aston Villa after a fly-by protest by fans calling for manager David Moyes to be sacked. A plane carrying an anti-Moyes banner was booed by some home fans as it flew over Old Trafford in the second minute. Ashley Westwood's curling free-kick put Villa ahead but Rooney quickly headed United level, then scored from the spot after Leandro Bacuna fouled Juan Mata. Mata slotted home a third before Javier Hernandez made it 4-1 in injury tim Villa striker Christian Benteke missed two good second-half chances but, crucially for their under-pressure manager, United were convincing winners and Moyes enjoyed a very public show of support.
Man United 2-1 Villa - HT: A double blow from Wayne Rooney gave Man United the edge over Villa in the first period at Old Trafford. Paul Lambert’s team started brightly and deservedly took the lead on 13 minutes when Ashley Westwood curled a free-kick past David De Gea following Rafael’s trip on Gabby Agbonlahor. But Rooney hit back seven minutes later with a header to convert Shinji Kagawa’s cross. The claret and blues were dealt a setback on the stroke of half time when referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot after Leandro Bacuna’s tackle on Juan Mata. Rooney stepped up to fire the penalty past Brad Guzan for his second goal of the match.
Teams no longer fear playing at Old Trafford according to Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney admits opposition teams no longer fear coming to Old Trafford. • Brewin:...
Manchester United's senior hierarchy is “evaluating all possibilities” as it attempts to arrest the club's steep descent under David Moyes. Contrary to public statements that Sir Alex Ferguson's successor will definitely be granted at least a second season as manager, Moyes' dismissal is prominent among those possibilities. Though Tuesday's humiliating 3-0 home loss to Manchester City ensured that United's first post-Ferguson season is statistically the club's worst in the Premier League era, the review of potential candidates to replace Moyes should not be regarded as a knee-jerk reaction. Key decision-makers within the Old Trafford board have been assessing potential replacements as manager for several weeks and further talks are planned. Having already sanctioned a spend of over £60 million on two headline transfers, handed Wayne Rooney a club-record contract renewal, and approved an unprecedented recruitment spend for this summer, the Glazer family is said to be concerned that the Scot will con . ...

Wayne Rooney has admitted that rivals are no longer afraid of coming to Old Trafford anymore because United are simply not good enough. Asked why they had lost a sixth Barclays Premier League match Trafford this season - more than in the previous three campaigns - Rooney said : 'I don't know but it's not good enough.' 'We can't lose six homes games in a season we've to put that right and make this a place teams fear again. 'We know we've to respond. It's a bad night for us all but we've to move on.'

'Pedestrian. Predictable. Man Utd were a mess' 26 March 2014 Updated 07:01 GMT By Phil Mcnulty - Chief football writer, BBC Sport The sight of a line of Old Trafford stewards guarding "The Chosen One" banner draped over the Stretford End since the appointment of David Moyes as Manchester United manager suggested the mood has started to sour. And the sound of loud and mutinous voices - not too many but enough to be noticed - raised against Moyes and even in the direction of Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who did the choosing, in the directors' box as Manchester City inflicted the latest embarrassment on the fallen Premier League champions carried even greater significance. Liverpool winning 3-0 at Old Trafford less than a fortnight ago was arguably a greater shock to the system than City winning by the same margin on Tuesday as the Merseysiders have barely appeared in United's rear view mirror in title terms in recent years. But there was a difference. United's supporters stayed in place in a noisy show of def ...

Mata's derby mission Juan Mata says he is relishing his first experience of a Manchester Derby and is determined to play his part in making it a memorable night for everyone connected to the Reds. With Robin Van Persie out injured, the Spanish international seems set to start behind Wayne Rooney in attack after the pair impressed together in the 2-0 victory at West Ham on Saturday. The triumph at Upton Park marked a return to winning ways in the Barclays Premier League and given that United's last league game at Old Trafford ended in defeat to arch rivals Liverpool, Mata wants to give the fans something to celebrate on Tuesday evening.
More life story revealed by Darren Fletcher... "Sir Alex was honestly more than a manager. He was a different level. I was conscious of contracts. I went to him and said, ‘I’m ill and not playing . . .’ He looked at me like I was mental. He said forget about football. Just get well for your kids and your family. I was listening and he was saying it ... but there’s a football pitch behind him, through his window. And I can see all his trophies and his pictures. I’m thinking, ‘Forget about football?!’” Fletcher revealed. Sir Alex Ferguson and Fletcher agreed, for a while, to hide the condition from teammates. “To avoid, ‘Why’s he playing? He’s ill’. We’d see if the medication worked.” He is blown away by the generosity of colleagues. Michael Carrick’s brother-in-law, a singer, is providing entertainment on Thursday. Jose be nice okay A small glint of Fergie's United was shown today at Upton Park, a lil magic from stand in and next captain Wayne Rooney, fast counter attacks and wing play that worked for once. If Moyes had found that recipe of using the creativity of Mata and Kagawa together before, maybe more spaces would have been created for RVP and Rooney earlier in the season and who knows the Red Devils who still be contenders. Wayne Rooney: Has scored each of his last 9 goals away from Old Trafford
Wayne Rooney's last goal at Old Trafford was on 26th October last year.
Reds marvel at evergreen Giggs Ryan Giggs received a glowing tribute from his Manchester United team-mates after producing an instrumental 90-minute display in the 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday night. Almost a month after his last Reds outing and on his 150th Champions League appearance, Giggs had a hand in the first two goals at Old Trafford and was as fit as any other player on the pitch. It led to manager David Moyes labelling him a "freak" after the game, while his team-mates were left shaking their heads in continued admiration. "What's left to say about him?" said Michael Carrick. "It's incredible to come into a game like that, having not played a lot of football recently, and get through it physically – it shows how he looks after himself. His ball for Wayne [Rooney] for the second goal was typical of him. He can still do it and it's a pleasure to play with him." Phil Jones added: "He's terrific. He drives the team forward and the ball for the penalty was exquisite. You can't teach that. H ...
Old Trafford reached fever pitch. When Robin Van Persie’s free kick hit the back of the net and clinched his hat-trick, all control was lost. Months of frustration were released at that moment; belief that had wavered was reborn. At the weekend, Manchester United sank as low as they could with a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, but with this 3-0 win over Olympiakos that sent them to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, they began the long climb back. “They were fantastic and they deserved this,” said Wayne Rooney of the fans after the game. Never a truer word has been spoken. As their bitterest rivals sauntered out of this arena victorious on Sunday, the crowd sang louder and louder. 20 times this club has won the English league championship -- they remind you of that in these parts. This is a proud club; finally, they have something to shout about again. Diego Maradona's Barcelona were the last team to surrender a two goal advantage in this stadium some 30 years ago. Robin Van Persie's hat-trick lifted the gloom surrounding Manchester United and manager David Moyes as the English side beat Olympiakos Piraeus 3-0 to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday. United, mounting a dismal defence of their Premier League title in Moyes's first campaign since replacing Alex Ferguson, kept alive their last remaining hope of lifting a trophy this season. Asked to show character by their manager, United responded with Van Persie showing a clinical edge that has been missing of late while the recalled Ryan Giggs was also instrumental on his first start since late January. Van Persie began the Old Trafford comeback with a 25th-minute penalty, awarded after he had been shoved in the back by Jose Holebas. The Dutchman levelled the tie on aggregate in first- half stoppage time, steering in Wayne Rooney's cross and Van Persie completed his hat-trick with a free kick six minutes after the break that left Olympiakos keeper Roberto rooted ...
WE OWED MOYES - RONNEY Wayne Rooney admitted Manchester United owed David Moyes a positive result after they overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit against Olympiakos to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. Robin Van Persie netted a hat-trick as United triumphed 3-0 at Old Trafford to relieve some of the pressure on their beleaguered boss. Moyes' position has come under intense scrutiny after a series of disappointing performances and results, but Rooney believes the second-leg victory illustrates that United's will to win has not deserted them. When asked what the biggest factor was behind their recovery, Rooney told Sky Sports 1HD: "It was just the desire to win. As you can hear, the fans in particular, the support has been fantastic. "Against Liverpool they were fantastic. They were fantastic again tonight and we're delighted for them." Rooney also accepted that the players owed Moyes, adding: "Of course we do. And we owed ourselves a good result. These fans, the manager, everyone. "This is a gr ...
