Herrera talks up Spanish influence 09 August 2014 10:14 AM By James Robson Ahead of United's final pre-season fixture against Valencia, Ander Herrera has discussed his "great relationship" with his compatriots in the squad. United may have a Dutchman at the helm – but there will be a distinctly Spanish flavour on the pitch this season. Midfielders Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will be key to Louis Van Gaal’s plans at Old Trafford, while goalkeeper David de Gea is now fully established as the club’s No1. Herrera – a £29m signing from Athletic Bilbao this summer – has impressed in pre-season with his assured displays. Meanwhile, Mata – a club record signing from Chelsea when arriving in a £37.1m deal in January – looks set to be handed the role of playmaker in Van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation. Man Utd Transfer News: £125m splurge on Angel Di Maria, Arturo Vidal AND Mehdi Benatia LOUIS Van Gaal is hoping he can pull off a terrific triple swoop as Manchester United look to sign Juventus' Arturo Vidal, Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria and Roma's Mehdi Benatia. Manchester United's record signing Juan Mata has revealed new manager Louis Van Gaal has told his players they must communicate in English. Mata has already struck up a bond with fellow countryman Ander Herrera, who joined from Athletic Bilbao earlier in the summer. However, on the pitch, speaking in Spanish has been ruled out. "We speak in English," he said. "The manager says we have to speak in English." It is not the only change Van Gaal has made since his arrival at United earlier this month. The Netherlands World Cup coach has also decided his team is going to play with wing-backs during the coming campaign. It worked to positive effect during the World Cup, when Van Gaal guided his team to third spot. And at Old Trafford, the aim is to get the most from his key attacking trio of Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, by placing the responsibility for defending in wide positions to his two wing-backs. Mata added: "The truth is we are trying to play with a new system. I don't know how much time it t ...
New Manchester United signing Ander Herrera will be sorely missed by Athletic Bilbao and a treat for the Red Devils As gestation periods go, nine months seems an appropriate length of time to wait on the arrival of a midfielder messiah. Last September Manchester United, in farcical circumstances, failed to complete a deal on transfer deadline for Athletic Bilbao maestro, Ander Herrera, but it seems that the Old Trafford club have finally got their man. Since then, Herrera and the Premier League side have had contrasting fortunes. Whereas the former Zaragoza man has seen his current club reach the Champions League for the first time since 1997, United spent the campaign struggling to cope in the post-Ferguson era. After the move collapsed, Herrera struggled to concentrate for a month, not helped by new Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde changing his position to a more attacking one. Once he forgot his failed move to England, Herrera and Athletic proved to be a force to be reckoned with in La Liga, eventually f ...

Manchester United face more frustration in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera. Herrera was priced out of a move to United in August and the midfielder is back on the agenda of the English giants. United chief scout Robbie Cooke watched Herrera last week against Real Sociedad and AS says two more United reps saw the youngster produce his best performance of the season against Getafe on the weekend. However, Bilbao are under no pressure to sell and for his part, Herrera is no longer attracted by a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United risk repeating errors which led to Liverpool's problems in the early 1990s, says Alan Hansen. Hansen was part of the title-winning Liverpool side of 1990, but they have failed to win the league since. New United boss David Moyes made just one notable summer signing in Marouane Fellaini, and his side have made their worst league start for 24 years."Liverpool began to flounder because they failed to replace good players with better ones," said Hansen. The former Scotland defender added: "The club has paid a heavy price in the two decades since." United won the Premier League last season under Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired at the end of the campaign and recommended fellow Scot Moyes as his successor. But the 50-year-old has had a tough first three months in charge at Old Trafford. United failed in their attempts to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas in the summer and were also unsuccessful in moves for Everton defender Leighton Baines, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Real ...

Breaking up is hard to do, but if it comes down to a straight choice between the girlfriend and a competition that offers plenty of passion and romance, there's only one winner Dear Deirdre, I'm not a bad guy but I'm considering leaving my girlfriend at home on Valentine's Day to spend this most romantic of manufactured holidays with someone else. I know it sounds heartless but it's just that I've been seeing someone else on Thursday nights for about two years now. Her name's Europa and I've really fallen for her. It's funny, because when we first met in 2009 I wasn't the least bit interested in Europa. She seemed a bit desperate, was a tad too big for my liking, and, to be brutally honest, I was really far more into her elder, far more glamorous sister. But gradually I've come to love Europa, and indeed our Thursday nights together. Who can forget that magical night at Craven Cottage when Fulham routed Juventus? Or when Athletic Bilbao outclassed Manchester United at Old Trafford... Such wonderful memori ...
