If you are a football fan aged 20 or under, trying to imagine Manchester United going 26 years without winning the league title is not an easy task. Under Sir Alex Ferguson the men from Old Trafford were eventually a dominant force. But when Eric Cantona took the M62 from Elland Road to join Ferguson's side in 1992 the title had been an elusive mistress for an entire generation. His impact was immediate. When Cantona scored his first United goal in December 1992 the club were below Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Norwich in the table. Yes - Blackburn, Villa and Norwich.

The 28-year-old, who is currently on-loan from Monaco, failed to even make the bench for the game at Old Trafford. Louis Van Gaal is set for talks with him on Monday when he will explain his decision to omit the striker from his squad. United must pay £43m to make Falcao’s move a permanent one at the end of the season. But there remain doubts over whether that deal will go ahead, with the forward still to rediscover the form that once made him one of the deadliest finishers in world football. On this day... Henrik Larsson. The Swede made his Reds debut on this day in 2007 and even scored in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. In total, Larsson made 13 appearances throughout his temporary stay at United and scored three goals - including this one against Lille in the Uefa Champions League. His short stay at Old Trafford undoubtedly helped the Reds win the 2006/07 title and he remains a popular figure among fans. Larsson on United in 2010 "If there is one regret I have from my career, it is that I came home to Sweden when Mr Ferguson was trying to get me to stay at Manchester United. I should have stayed at United for longer because I had a great time there and everyone at the club was very keen to keep me. My time there was too short. The whole experience was fantastic and, although I was 35 at the time, I still felt that I had some good football in me." Sir Alex on Larsson “In his last game in our colours at Middlesbrough we were winning 2-1 and Henrik went back to play in midfield and ran his balls ...
«». Falcao enjoying life at United Life is good for Radamel Falcao at Manchester United. The superstar striker, signed on loan from Monaco on deadline day last summer, has had a busy time of things recently but seems at home in the no.9 shirt. The Colombian has started all of United's last five games and scored point-saving equalisers at both Aston Villa and Stoke City. He has also had his first taste of the FA Cup, in unfamiliar surroundings at Yeovil Town, and appears to be reaching peak fitness. With United on an 11-match unbeaten run and Falcao making his mark, it is little wonder he is feeling content. "I'm good," he told ManUtd.com. "My family are comfortable. We're enjoying life in Manchester and here at the club. The people have been great with me, with my family. We're happy and very grateful." If any evidence of the respect he engenders among his team-mates was required, our video of the players lifting him back into full training in November provided it in abundance. Everybody appreciates the ...
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has revealed the reason for Angel Di Maria missing the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle. The Argentina international had only returned to action last weekend in the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa after spending a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. However, Di Maria was surprisingly absent from the matchday squad for the visit of Alan Pardew's Magpies on Friday, as the Red Devils ran out 3-1 victors led by inspirational skipper Wayne Rooney. Van Gaal explained after the game that the club's record signing had pulled up in training on Christmas Eve, which resulted in his omission at Old Trafford. The Dutchman toldMUTV: "In the last training session, he [Di Maria] stepped out of the warming up. "It was a little bit amazing because he did everything very well, but he stepped out and now we have to wait and see for the analysis." Van Gaal also provided updates on Adnan Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, with the injured quartet in line to r ...

While Chelsea and Manchester City slug it out at the top of the Premier League, Louis Van Gaal's Old Trafford revolution gathers ever more momentum in the red half of Manchester. The Dutchman endured a tricky start to his reign but seven wins in eight league games have put United hot on the heels of the pacesetters. If the current United side can emulate the teams of Alex Ferguson who were renowned for a strong second half of the season, Van Gaal's men could yet have their say in the destiny of the title. United visit Tottenham Hotspur in a lunchtime kickoff today as the games continue to flow thick and fast over the festive period. 'The signs have been good in recent weeks,' midfielder Michael Carrick told the club website (ManUtd.com). 'We were bitterly disappointed not to win last week (at Aston Villa) but we beat Newcastle and now have two big away games. They will be a good test for us to see where we are at.' After the trip to Spurs, United - seven points behind City and 10 adrift of Chelsea - are a ...
Manchester United beat Newcastle United at Old Trafford thanks to two goals from Wayne Rooney and one from Robin Van Persie. Robin Van Persie of Manchester United celebrates Louis Van Gaal's philosophy is still to fully take shape at Old Trafford – but on a day when United scored three and might have had at least as many more, it is clear to see the Dutchman's message is beginning to get across. They certainly responded to the ticking off dished out by their manager following the disappointing draw at Aston Villa a week ago – producing one of their best attacking performances of the season. Driving forward in numbers to overwhelm Newcastle, this could have been a Boxing Day rout. Instead it was a hugely satisfying performance for Van Gaal – and something to offer encouragement to the 75,000 who turned up for the final home game of 2014. It has been a turbulent 12 months in these parts – but the sight of Wayne Rooney in full flight, scoring twice, Juan Mata, Radamel Falcao and Robin Van Persie pier ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...
Manchester United could now have a strong chance of signing Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman in January due to the Serie A club's early elimination from the Champions League, Old Trafford sources have told ESPN. Strootman's season only began last month following his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in March, and Roma's failure to progress from their group in Europe has led United to believe they have significant leverage to do an earlier deal for the 24-year-old. United's interest in the Netherlands international is long-standing and has only increased following the arrival of his former national coach, Louis Van Gaal, at the Premier League club in the summer. The knee injury Strootman picked up not only ruled him out of the World Cup but also prevented any immediate possibility of a transfer following Van Gaal's appointment, although it had been anticipated at Old Trafford that a deal would eventually take place at the end of the 2014-15 campaign. There had been extensive preliminary ...
Manchester United maintained their recent improvement with a fourth successive league win, beating Stoke City 2-1 at Old Trafford with a Marouane Fellaini header and Juan Mata free kick either side of a Steven Nzonzi goal for Stoke. David De Gea guaranteed United held on to the points with two superb saves late in the game. United stay fourth but have 25 points, eight behind leaders Chelsea who host Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, while Liverpool have climbed to eighth place with 20 points. West Ham United remain fifth, a point behind United, after a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion, who have now lost their last four matches. James Tomkins headed the winner for the Hammers in first half stoppage time. Liverpool captain Gerrard, 34, left out of the starting line-up on Saturday, was back in the team at Leicester where he rifled home a poor clearance from captain Wes Morgan to turn the balance of the match the Merseysiders' way in the 54th minute. They had fallen behind when Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet co ...
Former Manchester United boss David Moyes has been announced as the new boss of La Liga outfit Real Sociedad. Moyes’ reputation as a manager suffered immensely during a difficult 10-month tenure at Old Trafford, where he was sacked in April. Having formerly built a name for himself at Everton, Moyes gets an unexpected chance at redemption in Spain . The Scottish coach has signed a one-and-a-half year deal with Sociedad, who finished seventh in the Spanish top flight last season. Moyes lasted just 51 games at Manchester United, winning just 27 times as the defending champions failed to qualify for the Uefa Champions League. His time in Manchester was characterized by vitriolic campaigns against him personally by sections of the United fan-base and intense scrutiny and criticism of his leadership. In March, a plane was infamously flown over Old Trafford with the message “Wrong One – Moyes Out” during a league match with Aston Villa.

Louis Van Gaal must sell Manchester United stars in 2015. Javier Hernandez has dropped a big hint this week that he plans to leave Manchester United at the end of the season in order to sign a permanent deal with Real Madrid. But he’s not the only star name likely to leave Old Trafford in 2015. The coach still has some serious deadwood to shift from his squad. 1. Chris Smalling has failed to develop in the manner most at Manchester United expected he would after signing him from Fulham in 2010. The England international is a superb athlete, but his footballing intelligence is seriously suspect. 2. Ashley Young’s impressive performances in pre-season lulled many Manchester United supporters and Louis Van Gaal into a false sense of security. Young has flattered to deceive since completing his £17 million move from Aston Villa in 2011 and no longer has any business being near Manchester United’s first team. 3. Darren Fletcher, The Red Devils’ vice-captain is a model professional who conducts himself ...
Everton host Aston Villa on Saturday at Goodison Park and will be looking to get back to winning ways after going down 2-1 to Manchester United last time out. That game at Old Trafford feels like months ago and there is nothing worse than going into an international break with a defeat – and Everton being Everton have an annoying habit of doing just that. Our latest loss came against an average United side and things might have been very different if it wasn’t for the excellence of De Gea between the home side’s sticks, but now we must look forward and move on to our next challenge which is a vital three points against Villa this weekend. Paul Lambert’s side travel to Goodison on the back on three defeats – to Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal respectively – and their last victory came when they last made the trip to Merseyside, winning 1-0 at the temple of doom across the park. On that particular afternoon the Villains put in an impressive performance and a solitary Agbonlahor (try saying ...

Moreover, with his contract expiring at the end of this season, the Dutch manager cannot possible find a better bargain deal and looks to sign his compatriot. Ron Vlaar himself is keen to make Old Trafford switch and join Van Gaal. Reports suggest that he has already agreed personal terms on provisional basis to join Manchester United. I guess many have been keen to read my analysis of last weekend's matches but I haven't posted anything. Well, better late than never! Chelsea's win over Swansea was impressive especially after Costa equalised for them. Costa is looking like the 'real deal' with his finishing and celebrations! They are 'Drogbaesque'. Let's see how his form continues. The Arsenal - Man Citeh game was another cracking one for the neutrals which I am and I'm glad both sides shared the spoils. Welbeck did okay for the gunners and I'm sure there's more to come from him. Citeh as ever, will always give anyone a run for the money and so expect more from the champions. Liverpool were abysmal in their loss to Aston Villa and I hope it continues! Unfortunately, life isn't that simple and I suspect soon, Balotelli and Sturridge when he returns from injury, will cause havoc for many a defence when they gel. As for my team Man U, all I can say is we need Jones and Smalling fit and in good form. The defence core looks soft. Citeh and Ch ...

Aston Villa are confident of signing Tom Cleverley on loan from Manchester United, according to Sky sources. Villa are waiting to hear back from the Premier League concerning a last-minute application to take the midfielder to Villa Park for the rest of the season on loan. It is understood that the two clubs were in talks for much of deadline day as both sought to negotiate a deal. Manchester United's representatives are thought to have been busy with securing Falcao's loan move to Old Trafford and Danny Welbeck's exit to Arsenal as well as additional outgoings, meaning that a deal for Cleverley may have missed the 11pm deadline. However, Villa are confident they have got their man after they submitted their application to the Premier League just before the deadline, outlining they had reached an agreement with United to make Cleverley their seventh acquisition of the window. Cleverley, who looks to have little future at Old Trafford with boss Louis Van Gaal making him available to other clubs, was believ ...

Cleverley is said to be one of the player Louis Van Gaal wants to shift from the United books, and it will be music to the ears of the majority of United fans who believe he doesn't deserve a place in the team. Villa are said to be keen to wrap up the transfer of the player prior to Monday's transfer deadline. English Premier League 2014/15 SEASON BEGINS No fixture is considered easy as the English Premier League kicks off today with 20-time champions Manchester United facing Swansea City and Arsenal hosting CrystalPalace in a London derby. Both United and Arsenal will be in the spotlight for the most part of the season following their dramatic campaigns last season. United, who were aiming to defend the title they won in the 2012-13 season, had flopped under manager David Moyes and had finished the season 7th in the log, a position that was as strange to the Red Devils as falling to their ‘noisy’ neighbours twice in the season; the second being a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. Arsenal also had one of their most embarrassing campaigns in recent time, losing on wide margins to Liverpool and Manchester City, and finishing fourth, again, after staying atop the league for most weeks of the season. Unlike how Arsenal started the league last season when they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa, they are favourites to win today ...
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert claims he is not concerned about rumours linking captain Ron Vlaar with a move to Southampton. The Netherlands international is reported to be a target for Southampton, who are said to view the former Feyenoord man as the ideal replacement for Dejan Lovren. Vlaar enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign under the stewardship of new Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal and he was even linked with a switch to Old Trafford. However, with Villa set to begin their Premier League campaign at Stoke City on Saturday, Lambert foresees no problems with his captain and insisted that Vlaar has in no way actively sought a transfer. He told reporters, “To be fair to Ron, he has not come to us or anything. “We have had little chats here and there, but I think his main concern was getting back after the World Cup, getting fit and hopefully being ready for Saturday. “That is where he has been. I have a good rapport with Ron, so I don’t have any problem with that whatsoever.” W ...

More At The Empire Of Manchester United By HaYtHeMoViC 17 ManUtd.com's review of the 20th title moves on to November... Overview It was a mixed month at home and abroad for the Reds starting and ending on a high, for Robin Van Persie in particular, with important strikes against former club Arsenal and West Ham (United's quickest goal of the season after 33 seconds) at Old Trafford. Come-from-behind wins at Braga and Aston Villa were followed by 1-0 defeats away to Norwich and Galatasaray, but the loss in Turkey didn't matter after qualification for the knock-out stages had been secured in Portugal earlier in the month. Key moment Javier Hernandez came off the bench to inspire the Reds in a vital win at Villa Park with an impressive double (he left the pitch with the match ball but his second goal was later credited to Villa's Ron Vlaar). Last week, Chelsea completed a youth double in the form of the FA Youth Cup and the U21 Premier League title. It was a proud moment for the Blues youth system, who have now reached the final of the former tournament five times in the last eight years. But in truth, the Chelsea development squad’s 2-1 victory against Manchester United in the U21 Play-Off final at Old Trafford was a rather hollow victory. For all the millions spent, time consumed and players prioritised in making the West Londoners one of England’s most formidable youth outfits, just three Chelsea academy products have become first team regulars at Stamford Bridge since the turn of the millennium – John Terry, Ryan Bertrand and Nemanja Matic. And although the Chelsea captain’s rise to the starting XI in the early 2000s was a simple enough path, Bertrand and Matic have not been so lucky. Struggling to adequately prove himself as the rightful successor to Ashley Cole, Bertrand has been sent out on loan to Aston Villa this season and . ...

However, as soon often is the case with Arsenal, the campaign drizzled out and soon the Catalan was on his way back to his boyhood club Barcelona. 4) Andrei Kanchelskis (Everton): 16 goals in 1995/96 The flying Russian wide man used to tear up opposition defences for fun during his time at Old Trafford in the early to mid Nineties, but it was when the winger moved to Everton though for the 1 ...

United to sack Moyes - reports Reports from Britain suggest that Manchester United will sack manager David Moyes. Moyes was selected by Sir Alex Ferguson to succeed him as manager of the Old Trafford outfit and was handed a six-year contract. But, things haven’t gone according to plan for Moyes or the United board, with United suffering an unprecedented eleven Premier League defeats. The latest being the 2-0 defeat to Moyes’ old club Everton. Moyes has come under increasing pressure from United supporters, with fans paying for a banner which flew over Old Trafford ahead of their game against Aston Villa which read: 'Wrong One - Moyes Out'. The defeat against Everton meant that any chance United had of qualifying for the Champions League went out the window. United have looked bereft of any confidence under Moyes, who has battled to work out what his best XI is. Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal, who is stepping down after the World Cup in Brazil, is thought to be in the running for the job. - IOL
England’s World Cup referee Howard Webb has been dealt another blow by being overlooked for Sunday’s crucial title clash between Liverpool and Manchester City Howard Webb has been given a string of low-profile matches since a calamitous performance in the Arsenal-Liverpool FA Cup tie two months ago. The 42-year-old will handle Crystal Palace v Aston Villa this weekend. Instead, Mark Clattenburg will referee this weekend’s title clash at Anfield, he last officiated a Liverpool game on March 16 when the Reds beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in which the official awarded the Premier League leaders three penalties Pal
If wins against Aston Villa and Newcastle, and 'brave' elimination against Bayern, are enough to erase memories of insipid football and woeful surrenders to fierce rivals, then something has gone wrong at Old Trafford.
As Matt Busby lay immobile in Munich, his trusty assistant Jimmy Murphy - who missed the trip to Belgrade because of his duties as Wales manager - had to pick up the pieces. Busby had told him, "Keep the flag flying, Jimmy."     As goalkeeper Harry Gregg recalled in his autobiography, the players who were left and able needed to play again. He wrote: “It (playing football) saved my sanity. I couldn’t get to the ground quick enough for training. Those brief moments spent running, diving, kicking, arguing and fighting were my escape valve.”United’s chairman Harold Hardman was in full agreement. Just 13 days after the crash, the rescheduled fifth-round FA Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday went ahead in front of a highly charged Old Trafford crowd of 59,848, with thousands more fans locked outside. Beneath the headline ‘United will go on’, Hardman’s message on the front of United Review(the club's match programme) was simple, yet effective.“Although we mourn our dead and grieve for our wou ...

Adnan Januzaj has been rewarded for his fantastic breakthrough season with Manchester United by being named the top Under-20 footballer in the world by Gazzetta Dello Sport. He beat a host of other talented youngsters such as Chelsea‘s Kurt Zouma, Paris St Germain’s Marquinhos and Schalke’s Max Meyer to the award and it is a testament to the impact he has had at Manchester United despite our poor season. Earlier this year, Januzaj was also nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy trophy award which Paul Pogba eventually won but his title from Gazzetta Dello Sport is fantastic in itself. Januzaj may only be 19 but he is already held in high regard at Old Trafford. When he came on against Aston Villa last week, he posed more attacking threat in a cameo substitute appearance than Ashley Young did in the whole game and going into next season and since his breakthrough goals against Sunderland, has been considered a vital player in the first team squad. He has been eased back out of the team this year by ...
Arsenal * Arsenal are the best second-half team in the Premier League; they have 'won' 18 of their 32 second halves this season. * Santi Cazorla had more touches than any other player during Arsenal v City (105) but contrived to lose the ball eight times with a poor touch. * Olivier Giroud has scored just three goals in his last 22 matches against the current top seven in the Premier League; he had three off-target shots v City on Saturday. Aston Villa * Villa are currently in relegation form with just seven points collected from their last eight Premier League games. * Their 13th-minute goal v Manchester United was their one and only shot on target. * Christian Benteke was dispossessed five times at Old Trafford; only five PL players have been dispossessed more times than the Belgian this season. Cardiff City * Cardiff have only scored nine first- half goals in the Premier League this season; they have scored 20 after the break. * At West Brom on Saturday, they picked up their first away point since Dece ...
Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Tuesday's Champions League game against Bayern Munich will be his first of many meetings with Pep Guardiola. United take on the European Champions over two legs for a place in the semi-finals. "I am really looking forward to coming up against Pep," Moyes says. "It is the first time I have done but I have no doubt I will be doing it many times in the future." Some United fans are unhappy with United's form since Moyes took charge last summer, and a plane carrying an anti-Moyes banner was flown over Old Trafford during Last Saturday's 4-1 home win over Aston Villa.
.David Moyes on fan support and THAT banner.. . Manchester United Manager David Moyes has acknowledged that the support of the fans of the club has always been fantastic, whilst not attaching much importance to the banner of the ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’ being flown above Old Trafford at the start of the match between them and Aston Villa last evening. “I’ve always found the crowd at Old Trafford has been terrific. I’ve not found what people are saying or writing: I’ve actually found the majority of people are very supportive and understand the job we are doing. We know we have a big job to do here and we are determined to put it right.” BBC Sport, 29th March, 2014 Other quotes: “I was at a dinner last night [Thursday] for Darren Fletcher and there were Manchester United supporters who came up to me and said ‘come on, keep going, we understand exactly the situation the club is in and team is in’. They were really supportive and every time I have been to Old Trafford they have been grea ...

Lots of interesting rumours in the papers today regarding Manchester United. Ancelotti to replace Moyes at Manchester United: David Moyes might have been expecting some good headlines on Sunday after enjoying one of his biggest wins of the season against Aston Villa on Saturday. No such luck: instead, he gets to sit over his cornflakes reading about who will succeed him in the dugout at Old Trafford. The Daily Star Sunday reports that "Carlo Ancelotti will be offered the job if David Moyes gets the sack," with the Real Madrid manager "set for the Bernabeu axe". The paper says that the United board haven't decided for 100% certain to fire Moyes - though rumours have been flying about player revolts and all sorts if he doesn’t go - but that they are "currently weighing up their options for the summer should they decide current boss Moyes has to go." Ancelotti is one of the coaches that United should have gone for in the first place - unlike Moyes, he would come to the job already well used to dealing with ...
Manchester United vs Bayern Munich Preview Following a rampant 4-1 display against Aston Villa, Manchester United face the toughest test of the season in the Champions League as they face holders Bayern Munich; arguably the best team in the world. United are understandably the underdogs in this clash and they face a massive task to cause an improbable upset. The first leg will be played at Old Trafford, meaning that we must put in a good performance to keep the deficit as little as we are able to, to give us some real hope for the trip to the Allianz Arena. David Moyes is responsible for United tactically, so it will be interesting to see how he plans to break down Bayern’s brilliant attacking force and hjt them on the break. The likes of Danny Welbeck and Antonio Valencia will be crucial with their physical abilities and pace not only in terms of attack, but also in terms of defence; hopefully they can exploit the very few gaps Bayern’s formidable defence will leave behind. With Mata ineligible to pl ...

David Moyes remained bullish in the face of fan protests after Manchester United's 4-1 win at home to Aston Villa on Saturday. Build-up to the game was dominated by a planned protest against Moyes' management of the struggling champions, with a plane trailing the message 'Wrong One - Moyes Out' flown above Old Trafford during the contest. Despite that, the overwhelming majority of the crowd remained firmly behind the manager, jeering the overhead display and cheering the Scot's name throughout much of the fixture.
English Premier League: ROUND UP OF GAMES! Man Utd BACK TO WINNING WAYS! Manchester United 4 - 1 Aston Villa Manchester United ealier today returned to winning ways after mid-week's home defeat when they comprehensively thrashed Aston Villa at Old Trafford. A brace from Wayne Rooney in the 20th and 45th minutes respectfully for United cancelled out an Ashley Westwood's opener for Villa in the 13th to give United a 2-1 lead in the 1st half. However, in the 57 minutes of the 2nd half, Juan Mata scored his first goal for Man United since his big-money move in January. The move for his goal was iniated by Maroune Fellaini, and a mix-up in the Villa defence ensured the goal ended at the back of the net to make 3-1 for United. Javier Hernandez completed the rout for United in added time when Januzaj skipped past a defender and fired a cross to the back post for forward to turn in. What a win it was for United! In the post-match interview, manager David Moyes says United are ready for Bayern challenge. Are they ...

Full-time: United 4 Aston Villa 1 Wayne Rooney hit a brace as the Reds fought back from a goal down to claim victory at Old Trafford. Ashley Westwood's free-kick gave the visitors the lead, but Rooney headed in Shinji Kagawa's cross and then converted a penalty to put David Moyes' side 2-1 up at the break. Juan Mata netted his first goal for United in the second half and substitute Chicharito scored from close range late on to seal the win.
Plane flies over Old Trafford with 'Wrong One Moyes Out' banner. Stunt roundly booed by Man Utd fans The core fans in the stadium booed the helicopter and they sang Moyes' praises as he applauds them and repaid their support with a convincing 4-1 win over Aston Villa. ManUtd 4 Life... D Chosen One 4 real.
BREAKING NEWS: Manchester United have just won a game at Old Trafford. I repeat Manchester United have over-power Aston Villa on 4 goals to 1, and Juan Mata score his united first goal at Old Trafford.
FT: Man Utd 4-1 Aston Villa ! At last a fantastic result at Old Trafford after derby loss ! Rooney brace, Mata's first and Hernandez to finish ;)
Half time at Old Trafford, and despite an early goal and a flying tifo, Manchester United will go into the second half with a 2-1 lead over Aston Villa. Wayne Rooney scored both goals for the hosts, the second from the penalty spot, as United look to end what has been a terrible week by their lofty standards with a win. Ashley Westwood opened the scoring with a 14th minute free kick. Should be interesting to see if the hosts can extend their lead, or whether Villa can pull back the deficit. Runners are behind the gates for the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup over 3200 metres. ENHANCED ODDS! -> 5/2 on Man Utd to beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford...
If a single banner hits the floor at Old Trafford in the coming weeks, could David Moyes's Manchester United empire crumble? Such is the significance attached to legends and symbols that, for Moyes, the future of the "Chosen One" banner draped across the Stretford End at Old Trafford could play a crucial role in his future at the club. His chances of addressing the growing issues facing the reigning Premier League champions may hinge on whether that banner stays or goes. Fans' group Stretford End Flags (SEF) raised the money for it in the summer, in recognition of Moyes's status as the man personally selected by Sir Alex Ferguson to fill the first managerial vacancy at United for more than 26 years. As Moyes lurches from one damaging result to another, the banner has become a parody of itself and some supporters have called for its removal. "The Chosen One - by Liverpool", goes one replica. "David Moyes is a football genius", another proclaims sarcastically, held up earlier this month by the visiting fans ...

'Wrong One - Moyes Out': United fans pay £840 to fly message over Old Trafford during the match against Aston Villa I really hope this doesn't happen. I'm not a Moyes fan but if he does turn it around how stupid will United fans look, plus it won't make any difference anyway.

Aston Villa this weekend? It is an insult to the great Moyes playing against such jumbo clubs! Bayern Munich are in for a solid drubbing when them come to my fort, Old Trafford!
Skipper Steven Gerrard scored twice as Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford to go second in the Premier League. Fabian Delph's late strike saw Aston Villa stun league leaders Chelsea 1-0 at Villa Park.
I want Olympiakos to eliminate us, Westham to beat us away, Man City to thrash us at home, a draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, and two defeats away to Newcastle and Everton sothat Moyes gets the SACK. He is inept and his tactics stink. Welcome Jurgen Klopp or Diego simeone or Louise Van Gaal or worse still Roberto Martinez - at least he has won a trophy and plays a passing attacking football - Murray Onyango. I say give moyes one more season to prove (murray is a die hard fan of Man Utd, a friend who really supported wen moyes came in and a football pundit).

Three Arsenal stars make starting XI after North London Derby victory With another exciting weekend of Premier League football over with, BBC pundit Garth Crooks has put together his 'Team of the Week'. Impressive wins for Aston Villa, Liverpool and Arsenal mean that some of their players have taken a role in Crooks' team, and here is his full starting XI. GOALKEEPER - David Marshall (Cardiff) David Marshall's performance at Goodison Park was so impressive it looked like Everton were never going to beat the Scotland international. Everton peppered his goal and Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas all brought brilliant saves out of him in the first half. DEFENDER - Jon Flanagan (Liverpool) This time it was at Old Trafford in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Manchester United and again I saw young Flanagan cope with another big occasion. At no stage in the game did Flanagan look nervous or overawed. United even got Adnan Januzaj to swap wings in order to try to get at the full-back but he got no change ...
EPL REFEREES FOR THIS WEEKEND'S 'BIG' MATCHES ANNOUNCED.SEE WHO'S OFFICIATING YOUR MATCH. We’ve just enjoyed another enthralling weekend of Premier League action that’s see the title race well and truly become a four-horse race. Chelsea opened the door to their rivals after slipping up away at Aston Villa on Saturday night but the game didn’t go off without incident, as Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands after referee Chris Foy had sent off Willian and Ramires in the second half while he also controversially disallowed a Chelsea goal with the score still at 0-0. Liverpool took full advantage by thrashing Manchester United3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday with the visitors being awarded three penalties, while Nemanja Vidic was sent off by Mark Clattenburg for a second yellow card for an apparent foul on Daniel Sturridge, although replays showed the striker had dived. Arsenal also kept themselves in touch at the top with a hard fought 1-0 win over North London rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane, but th ...
Would you rather have a six point advantage or three extra games – a trip to Old Trafford before hosting Sunderland and Aston Villa – to make up the ground? That's the situation Premier League pacesetters Chelsea and Manchester City find themselves in. But before you boldly declare that City’s points deficit is the favourable option, consider the teams that block their path to the title in their games in hand… Manchester United. City’s closest rivals have welcomed back lethal strike partnership Rooney and RVP, and can ill afford another derby defeat. Sunderland. A side that boasts victories at St James’ Park and Goodison Park this season, the Black Cats also toppled City at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League and ran them close in the League Cup final. Aston Villa. The Midlands outfit beat City 3-2 earlier in the campaign and are just starting to hit form with Christian Benteke belatedly warming to his second season in English football. So are City guaranteed at least six points from ni ...

Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that he has an input in Man Utd's transfer dealings as part of his new contract. Michael Laudrup "i'd rather play here at Old Trafford again instead of Palace, Cardiff or Aston Villa, our performance would drop against small clubs" Does he want a kick in the teeth!!! -Craig
This Sunday we face Swansea City in the FA Cup in part one of a rare home double- header, where the Welsh side will also be our next opponents at Old Trafford. Cup draws have occasionally seen the same visitors head to M16 for consecutive league and cup meetings, and the Reds have a good record in such encounters. Wimbledon carved out a draw in the fourth round of the FA Cup on 25 January 1997, when Robbie Earle equalised in the 90th minute just seconds after Paul Scholes had put United ahead. Four days later, goals from Ryan Giggs and Andy Cole overturned a second-half opener from Chris Perry to hand the Reds a 2-1 win in the league. A decade later, Aston Villa pitched up at the Theatre of Dreams twice inside a week but headed back south down the M6 having lost on each occasion. On 7 January, Milan Baros cancelled out Henrik Larsson’s opener, but a last-gasp winner from supersub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw the Reds into the hat for the FA Cup fourth round. Less than a week later on, goals from Ji- sung Pa ...
MY VIEW IN THE Premier League THIS THURSDAY!!! CRUNCH GAMES AND ALL EYES WILL BE AT ETI HAD WHERE Man City ARE REFUSING TO DROP POINTS! HOW WILL BWEZANI DO? Hull City v Manchester United The KC Stadium 14:45 Steve Bruce failed to claim the scalp of Manchester United during his many encounters with Sir Alex Ferguson, but the former Old Trafford captain may fancy his chances on Boxing Day with Hull welcoming David Moyes’s team to East Yorkshire aiming to maintain their record as the most miserly home defence in the country. Hull have conceded just three goals at the KC Stadium this season, so United will have their work cut out. Manchester United have won their last 10 Boxing Day fixtures. Their last defeat on this day was in 2002 when they lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough and I think their winning streak continues here. My Verdict: Hull City 0-1 Manchester United _ Aston Villa v Crystal Palace Villa Park 17:00 Paul Lambert is facing the first real signs of unrest from supporters, with his transfers, tactics a . ...
★ MATCH PREVIEW: Stoke City VS. Manchester United ★ ★ THE EXPECTED LINEUPS ★ # Against Manchester United in the League Cup aftermath. He returned to training while winger The Potters-Matthew Etherington. His performance, however, is unlikely. # Play Capital One Cup by United have always been treated as a playing field for youth and less playing. David Moyes has warned skipper Nemanja Vidic he cannot expect to walk straight back into the Manchester United team. Vidic is ready to return after missing two games with a minor injury suffered in the Premier League defeat by Newcastle at Old Trafford on Dec. 7. Yet those two matches have both been wins, in which United have managed to keep successive clean sheets for only second time this season. Jonny Evans and Phil Jones looked particularly untroubled at Aston Villa on Sunday. And whilst Vidic has been the cornerstone of United's defence following his arrival from Spartak Moscow almost eight years ago, the Serbian has been plagued by injury since rupturing his cruciate ligaments in the Champions League to Basle in December 2011. With Rio Ferdinand now 35, Moyes is known to be on the lookout for central defensive reinforcements. Yet, even amongst his current squad, it seems Vidic will have to work to win his place back. "Nemanja is just about ready to play now," said Moyes. "But we have five centerback ...
Sack Moyes Now Man United Must Sack Manager David Moyes Sooner Rather Than Later Time to end the Scot's Old Trafford reign before he ruins not only his own reputation. Check in to Aston Villa vs Manchester United Oh David Moyes what have you done. There are some who will demand that the Former Everton boss be given time to make an impact, a positive impact that is, and some who argue that he faces an uphill task replacing the irreplaceable. Neither of these assertions survive even a cursory moment of contemplation. Yes Sir Alex Ferguson was given four years to get Man United 'into gear' but remember what state the club was in when he took over. We are talking about a man who helped the Old Trafford club to their first domestic title in 25 years versus a man who has taken a title winning squad and helped make them a mid-table outfit in a matter of months. Also anyone attempting to compare the two manager's 'Pre Man United' success need to a dose of reality. There is no denying Moyes did a good job keeping ...

Arsenal can beat anyone - Ozil 10 November 2013, 13:18 Mesut Ozil says Arsenal are ready to take on all-comers after proving that they can maintain their fine early-season form. The Gunners stumbled out of the Premier League blocks on the opening weekend, but then spent big to land Ozil on transfer deadline day and have not looked back. Only two defeats have been suffered in all competitions since coming up short against Aston Villa, and one of those was avenged in midweek as they edged out Borussia Dortmund in the Uefa Champions League. Ozil believes that showing in Germany proves that Arsenal are the real deal and he is delighted to have linked up with a squad at Emirates Stadium that is brimming with confidence. Ahead of Sunday's crucial clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford, the talented 25-year-old told The Sun: "The message after Wednesday's win is that now Arsenal can beat any team in Europe. "Maybe in the past they have struggled against some bigger clubs. But, as of this week, we have show ...

Manchester United, simply, have been inconsistent thus in the season and will aim to make things right at Old Trafford versus Arsenal. They have struggled or just scraped past weaker opponents and haven't the best against big teams too. Boasting players like Van Persie and Rooney, they could give the arsenal defenders a headache and after that thrilling win after falling behind last week, it will be interesting to see how they face arsenal. Arsenal on the other hand have been largely irresistible and have been in scintillating form after the first day loss to Aston Villa. Aaron Ramsey has been simply amazing with arsenal's midfield being really world class with the trio if Mesut Özil, Cazorla and Ramsey capable of winning any match on a given day, Olivier Giroud's red hot form is also a good sign for gunners and their defence, looking really good at the moment, we expect it to be an Arsenal win. ~gunner
Tim Howard and Everton ready to take on Brad Guzan and Aston Villa. Battle of the bald heads. Meanwhile, Geoff Cameron starts @ Old Trafford
Is Javier ' Chicarito' Hernandez wasted at Manchester United? I think so, and hears my reasons why. Javier Hernandez has said yesterday in an interview that he may have to move away from Old Trafford to get more game time and fullfil his potential. It would be a huge loss for Manchester United to lose a player of his quality. A striker who can get you 20/30 goals a season is rare. Here is one rotting on the bench or even in the stands in Manchester. Hernandez is the sort of player that will get you a goal from nothing; he only needs one chance to put the ball in the net. He consistently pops up in the right place at the right time to take a chance. Sir Alex used to rely on Hernandez to pull United out of sticky situations, classically last season when United were two down away to Aston Villa at half time. Hernandez came on and effectively won united the game with two goals. He would of had a hat trick but his third effort went down as an own goal. Again last season Sir Alex’s side were struggling to ov ...
On 8th September, 2013, The Guardian, Sir Alex Ferguson, announced his retirement by the end of the season. An era came to an end, which started on 6th November, 1986, since he was appointed the Manager for the club, based at Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, evaluated at an estimated cost of $3.165 billion, till date and passed on the baton to David Moyes, who took the charge on 1st July, 2013. During his tenure for a period of 26 years and a half(to be approximate), the former manager, had won 38 trophies, inclusive of 13 Premier League titles and 2 UEFA Chamions League trophies. As the facts suggest, and so do we, as the ardent fans of the Red Devils, David Moyes is surely being made in-charge of an uphill task, to carry on the legacy of the former Scottish-origin manager. Can the phoenix rise again, as the Former Everton manager steps into his predecessor’s shoes? Will he fit in? We surely have our hopes soaring high. Moyes registered a 63% win percentage in the first 8 matches for Manchester Unit . ...
And so it begins. We knew that Manchester United were vulnerable. We knew that the first run of poor form under the new manager would signal a panic. The only thing we didn’t know was how quickly it would happen. United were handed a tricky start by the fixture computer, though not as tricky as Aston Villa who have two more points, but you can’t blame this start on fixtures. With respect to West Bromwich Albion, they should not be winning at Old Trafford and they certainly should not be able to dance through the United defence with that ease. Was he the right man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson? Is he out of his depth? Should he be sacked before he can do any more damage? United have supporters all over the world and on Saturday night, tens of thousands of them were united in their fury over the social networks.. Let’s be clear: United’s start under the Former Everton boss has been wretched. For this club to have lost three games before the start of October is unprecedented in the Premier League era. ...
Slick Arsenal win to stay top, United, City lose. Arsenal continued to make a mockery of gloomy close-season predictions as they went two points clear with second-half goals from Serge Gnabry and Aaron Ramsey before a late consolation from Swansea's Ben Davies. United suffered more misery when they went down 2-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion in their worst start to a Premier League season with the champions in the bottom half after six games. Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino scored for the visitors either side of a Wayne Rooney leveller at Old Trafford to leave United 12th a week after a crushing defeat at local rivals City. City also suffered an unexpected reverse at Aston Villa, who scored three second-half goals to win 3-2. Spurs stay second, two points adrift of their North London rivals, after a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea while Southampton's watertight defence held firm as they climbed to fourth spot with a 2-0 victory at home to Crystal Palace. Hull City won 1-0 against visiting West Ham Unit ...

REGGAE MI DIS, REGGAE MI DAT . I had always maintained that the Reggae Boys were not ready for International competition. They are only as good as the road side scrimmage they play or local competition played at Spanish Town Prison Oval, not Old Trafford. Hence, I am not disappointed, I really never expected them to perform any better than they did. Maybe now they will stop walking around as if they are the 'cat's pyjamas' and stop walking with their legs 'bow' and bent up like jockeys. I commend them for their efforts but reality is ... dem nuh ready. A lot of people have the misconception that soccer is a 'skill' sport. It takes more than just 'foot' skills and fitness to excel in soccer. I used to live almost next door from Aston Villa (football club in England) and I, even though I am no football expert know that soccer requires metal skill and good coaching techniques. The Reggae Boys have a long way to go before they can impact the International competition. According to studies and statistical anal ...

On this day: 31 May 2000 Fabien Barthez joins Man Utd from Monaco Manchester United completed the signing of France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez from Monaco on a six-year-deal. Barthez, who won the 1998 FIFA World Cup, was brought in to fill the void left by Peter Schmeichel, who retired in 1999 after a glorious spell with the club. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had previously brought in Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich and Italian Massimo Taibi in a bid to find a solution, but after they struggled he went for Barthez, who had a successful career in his homeland. Barthez won the Uefa Champions League in 1993 with Marseille and, after joining Monaco two years later, he kept a clean sheet in the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final as France beat Brazil to win the trophy. After moving to Old Trafford, Barthez and France won the European Championships in 2000 and he followed it up with domestic success with United, as they claimed the 2000/01 Barclays Premier League title. Arsenal wrested the title back in th ...
Javier Hernandez notched up his 50th goal for Manchester United in his 117th appearance in the 5-5 final-day draw with West Bromwich Albion last weekend. It’s an excellent record for a man who, in his three seasons at Old Trafford, has made a name for himself as a predatory striker par excellence. He has a tremendous knack of finding the net, whether as a starter or when called off the bench – as he did to great effect in this season’s memorable come-from-behind win at Aston Villa. Our video recalls a selection of the Mexican’s half-century of goals in the red shirt, from his bizarre debut strike in the 2010 Community Shield to his typical poacher’s finish at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
Manchester United season review 2012/13 False start United’s first game of the season saw them travel to Goodison Park to face Everton. Things didn’t quite go to plan and a Marouane Fellaini goal saw United lose 1-0, the first time they have lost the opening game of the season since 2004. This didn’t faze them however, and they then went onto to comprehensively win their next four games against Fulham, Southampton, Wigan and Liverpool, with RVP netting five goals in those games, with a fine hatrick against the Saints. On the 29th September however they hit another stumbling block, this time against Tottenham at Old Trafford. Goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale saw Spurs go 2-0 up in half an hour, however three goals in three second half minutes put the visitors come out 3-2 winners. But United bounced back again impressively with wins over Newcastle, Stoke and Aston Villa, as well as massive wins against Chelsea and Arsenal, with RVP taking just three minutes to find the back of the net agains ...

Football Weekly Extra: Real Madrid end Manchester United's Champions League dreams On today's Football Weekly Extra, James Richardson has stir-fry tofu munching Sean Ingle, Tom Lutz and Iain Macintosh in the pod to look back on all the drama of Manchester United's defeat to Real Madrid, featuring as it did a rather dodgy red card for Nani, a goalscoring-but-non-celebrating return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo, and the latest beginning-of-the-end of Wayne Rooney's United career. Anyway, never mind the Champions League – which also saw success for PSG, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, about which there's plenty more in Jimbo's European paper review on Friday – Sid Lowe wants to talk to us about cornflakes and his favourite breakfast cereals. Finally, we look forward to the weekend, with those FA Cup quarter-finals including Blackburn's tussle with Millwall, and Reading v Aston Villa and Tottenham's trip to Liverpool in the Premier League, and get up to speed with Justin Bieber's love for Aston Vi ...
While Manchester United's position at the top of the table will not change in March, the margin by which the Reds lead Manchester City could well be altered with three league matches apiece to be played by the title-race rivals. Sir Alex Ferguson's men will go into the new month with a 12-point lead after City's 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. Here we look at who the Reds and Blues will face during March - with a reminder of last season's corresponding results. United v Norwich City – Saturday 2 March, 15:00 GMT Pundits will expect the Reds to go 15 points clear again but while this fixture produced a straightforward home victory last term (2-0), the Canaries’ shock 1-0 win when the sides last met at Carrow Road should ensure there’s no complacency in Sir Alex’s squad. Aston Villa v Manchester City – Monday 4 March, 20:00 GMT The United players will no doubt be glued to their hotel TV screens on the eve of the Real Madrid second-leg match at Old Trafford, tuning into the live Sky cover ...

The History Of Old Trafford (1909-1999) In 1910 Manchester United moved from Bank Street, Clayton to Old Trafford. Built in 1909, for the then huge sum of £60,000 it was terraced on three sides with a seated main stand undercover. The stadium was designed by famous Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, who also designed stands at Hampden Park, White Hart Lane and Ibrox Stadium. In 1911 and 1915 it held the FA Cup Final and in 1920 it had its largest ever attendance of 70,504 for a league game against Aston Villa, the FA Cup Semi of 1939 of Portsmouth vs Grimsby would top that with 76,962.The stadium was heavily damaged in World War 2 and for a while United played at local rival, Man City's ground, Maine Road from 1946-49. Old Trafford was a venue for the 1966 World Cup and also held the 1970 FA Cup Final replay between Chelsea and Leeds. Roofed cover was later added to the other three sides of the stadium, however all these stands suffered from obstructed views because of old fashioned roof-post design. In t ...

Premier League - POOR PLAYERS SO FAR IN THE EPL- As the season reaches its half-way point, ESPN takes a look at which players have failed to live up to expectations at each club. Arsenal: Thomas Vermaelen There is a case for Gervinho while Arsenal fans can lament the continuing presence of Marouane Chamakh, Andre Santos and Sebastien Squillaci at the club but the gravest disappointment of the season may be a man of whom rather more was expected. On his day, Thomas Vermaelen ranks among the best defenders in the division. Too often, however, it has not been his day. A harrowing afternoon at Old Trafford was the nadir in an uncomfortable spell at left-back while the Arsenal captain was run ragged by a League Two striker, Nahki Wells, in a Capital One Cup exit to Bradford that was sealed by Vermaelen's poor penalty. Aston Villa: Darren Bent Darren Bent started the season as Aston Villa captain. He reaches the half-way point having lost the armband, his place in the team and then his place on the bench to Jor ...
2 - The two teams O'Neill guided to victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League were Leicester City & Aston Villa. Duo.
He's the "Super-Sub". Came of the bench and banged in 2 goals & caused 1 goal to be deflected into goal against Aston Villa. Came of the bench again on Sat and scored an excellent goal against QPR. United were 2 goals behind Aston Villa at Villa Park and a goal down to QPR at Old Trafford and gee weez, the Red Devils beat Villa 3-2 and QPR 3-1. But this bad habit of conceding the early goals and going behind must stop. Its unhealthy and it gives fans a "heart attack". United must now start scoring and going in front beginning with the mid week match against the Hammers.
Manchester United travel to Villa Park this weekend with plenty at stake. Having climbed to top spot in the Premier League almost unnoticed, they now have the chance to extend their lead over Chelsea and Manchester City to four points. City and Chelsea face Tottenham and Liverpool respectively on Sunday afternoon. Both will be hopeful of gaining at least a point from their respective games, but it won't be easy for either; United, meanwhile, take on a lacklustre Aston Villa side and will feel that they must capitalise on the opportunity. Blog: No favours from Ferguson Having lost twice in the league already this season, Sir Alex Ferguson can be forgiven if he has a wry grin on his face when assessing the permutations of this weekend's fixture list. The ball is now in United's court, and on the week that he celebrated his 26th anniversary at Old Trafford, he will revel in the knowledge that he has gained the edge on his big-spending competitors. At the other end of the scale, Paul Lambert is just beginning ...
Aston Villa face Man Utd tmrw. Can you name the starting line-up that won 1-0 at Old Trafford in Dec 2009?
Anfield boss interested in Old Trafford forward. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgershas reportedly taken an interest in young Man United striker Federico Macheda. The Italian Under 21 international has struggled to force his way into the Old Trafford first team picture afteran explosive start to his Man United career and his agent hastalked up the possibility of his client looking to move on and could well be tempted by the possibility of a move to Anfield. The 21 year old Man United forward spent unsuccessful loan periods at QPR and Sampdoria though it is worth noting that the Rome born marksman didn’t get all that much time to impress during either spell. Macheda exploded onto the scene three and a half years ago when he scored a cracking winner on his Premier League debut against Aston Villa, he then scored the following weekend away at Sunderland but then struggled for form and has seemingly fallen well down the pecking order following the signings of JavierHernandez and Robin Van Persie and seen youngst ...

WHY ITS DISRESPECT TO CALL Manchester United --'MAN U' For all United fans out there who still have doubts on y the Red Devils shouldn't be referred as man u This term is only used by United rivals as a complete and utter insult to the club. Many United competitors would sing a song about the Munich air disaster which claimed the lives of eight players. Man U Man U went on a plane Man U Man U never came back again... If you’re a Man United fan and that doesn’t get your blood boiling, I’m sure nothing will. Manchester United are nicknamed UNITED, Man United, Man Utd and Red Devils. There are no official songs with a ‘Man U’ word nor will one lay his hands on an official merchandise using that term. Manchester City isn’t christened Man C or an Aston Villa as Ast V. Like the song goes ‘There’s Only One United’ so people will know where your loyalty is. The term Utd is the proper abbreviation for the word United and nothing else. Why can’t some accept this and get over themselves. The Scou ...

Man Utd gaffer fergie says Rooney was careless- -dissapointed with Rooney Wayne Rooney is hoping to surpass Dennis Viollet's and George Best's 179 goals in a Manchester United shirt. Photograph: Jason Cairnduff/Action Images Sir Alex Ferguson gave Wayne Rooney a ticking off despite his two-goal contribution to Manchester United's 4-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday. It took him to 31 for the season but Rooney looked unimpressed when he was replaced by Dimitar Berbatov. "He was careless," said the United manager. "Wayne has to play on the edge of a game, when it is really close and competitive. "When the game gets to that casual bit, he is worse than the rest of them. He gets really casual about it. It is better when he is on the edge. Then he is a marvellous player." Despite his initial reaction Rooney echoed his manager's sentiments after the match when talking to MUTV: "It was nice to score two goals but I didn't think my performance was good enough," he said. "Obviously we were disappoin ...
