went looking for evidence. The Economist and Wired highlighted a recent study from the journal Psychological Science, which found that thinking in a foreign language helps people to avoid common cognitive traps. In a series of studies, a group of psychologists found that thinking in another language reduced the misleading biases people hold that influence how we weigh the risks and benefits in a decision. Given how critical decision-making is in every leadership job, and how easy it is for anyone to fall into the trap of letting biases lead their thinking, perhaps a Second Language should be more of a resume booster than just the potential for an executive to win business overseas. Another recent study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that Northwestern University researchers had, for the first time, discovered differences in how bilingual thinkers process the sounds of speech. That seems to improve attention and working memory among foreign-language speakers: “because you ...

As men age, chromosomes in their sperm are tipped with longer telomeres — structures that protect valuable genetic information from deterioration during cell division and other processes. Longer telomeres have been associated with long life, whereas short telomeres have been linked to aging and disease. Scientists have known for a while that telomeres increase in length for every year a man ages and that children of older dads inherit longer telomeres. But the new study by researchers at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., extends that inheritance to grandchildren. The new finding, published online June 11 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could point to a mechanism by which men can influence the health of their offspring for generations.
The other day I read an article in the Wall Street Journal regarding a study by Dr. Nina kraus who is a professor of neurobiology and physiology at Northwestern University. The results of this study were published in the Proceedins of the National Academy of Sciences; and it documents and confirms that the brain those of us who speak 2 or more languages process speech sounds better and faster; also that the biological diffeerence in the auditory nervous system is also enhanced and there for have better attention aand memory than those who only speak one language. in other words we mental jugglers says Dr. Kraus... also some of the research suggest that bilingual people may have enhanced defenses against Alzheimers. I think this is pretty cool!
