MONDAY with Pastor Cliff - Gratefulness: On September 8, 1860, a passenger boat on Lake Michigan was in trouble and began to sink. A ministerial student from Northwestern University personally rescued 17 people. The exertion of that day permanently damaged his health and he was unable to finish his studies at the university. When he died, some years later, it was noted that not one of the seventeen people that he saved ever came to thank him. Thankfulness is the opposite of selfishness. The selfish person says, "People ought to make me happy.” The mature Christian realizes that life is a gift from God and that the blessings of life come only from God's hand. Do the work of God with a gracious heart.
The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest Ungrateful Children Many years ago, a boat was wrecked in a storm on Lake Michigan at Evanston, Illinois. Students from Northwestern University formed themselves into rescue teams. One student, Edward Spencer, saved 17 people from the sinking ship. When he was carried exhausted to his room, he asked, "Did I do my best? Do you think I did my best? Years later, R.A. Torrey, a well know evangelist, was talking about the incident at a meeting in Los Angeles. A man in the audience called out that Edward Spencer was present. Dr. Torrey invited Spencer to the platform. An old man with white hair slowly climbed the steps to loud applause. Dr. Torrey asked him if anything in particular stood out in his memory. "Only this, sir, he replied, "of the 17 people I saved, not one of them thanked me." God has children who are ungrateful. You may recall the time when Jesus met 10 lepers who cried out for his help. He told them to go and present themselves to the priest for a health certifica ...
On this beautiful 30 degree sunny Chicago day, I participated in the Polar Plunge at Northwestern University supporting the Special Olympics! I'm so happy I was able to jump into a part of the freezing cold Lake Michigan to help support the Special Olympics. Out of all 300 Plungers, over $250,000 was raised! I feel so blessed to have been able to participate. The water might have been freezing, but it was all worth it!❤️
Northwestern University football players filed papers to become a union Tuesday with the National labor Relations Board in Chicago. It's fitting, Northwestern is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, which is America's most hallowed union burial ground
Chicago & Lake Michigan. So gorgeous. Happy to be speaking at Northwestern University today.
There was a shipwreck on Lake Michigan and a young student, then at Northwestern University, jumped in and saved twenty-three people from the shipwreck before he collapsed on shore. Some years later, Dr. R.A.Torrey was speaking in Los Angeles, and relaying the story of the heroics of that day. To his astonishment, the man quite older now, was in the audience. After his speach he began to question the man concerning the incident and asked "what was the greatest memory he had after all these years of that particular day?" The old man dropped his head and replied,"No one said 'thanks'." Take time-out today to give 'thanks' to someone who made a difference in your life...teacher,friend,family member,anyone...let them know and watch the blessings flow.

Bo, Layla and I hiked for an hour along the Evanston shoreline. Icy north wind barreled down my spine, but the magnificent power of Lake Michigan drew me on. Huge waves curled and crashed up against the boulders behind Northwestern University sending plumes of water into the air. Out on the horizon, enormous waves crested, lifting their white foam against the deep blue-grey sky. To the south, you could see them crashing into the harbors around Chicago. The water, normally a beautiful turquoise, was the color of army drabs from mud dredged up from the bottom of the lake. On one of the smallest, most protected beaches, water came up to the break fences near the road. Just a couple of weeks ago, people were lamenting that due to the summer drought, the lake is at one of the lowest points it's been. Now that seems like a blessing...
Be Thankful For a number of years, the Northwestern University, located in Evanston, Illinois, had maintained a volunteer life-saving crew, recruited from its student body. In actuality, this group became quite famous and well-known for their heroics on Lake Michigan. The story goes that on September 8, 1860, the Lady Elgin, a crowded passenger steamer, foundered and ran aground. As it began breaking apart on the rocks off the shore of the lake just above Evanston, a crowd soon gathered. One of the students, Edward W. Spencer, who was attending the Garrett Biblical Institute (a part of Northwestern), was a member of the volunteer life-saving crew. He spotted a woman hanging on to some of the wreckage and threw off his coat to swim out through the heavy waves to rescue her, which he was successful in doing. Fifteen more times, on this day, the young and brave Spencer swam out into the treacherous water to save a total of 17 persons. Following his last rescue attempt, he collapsed in a heap on the shore ...
