(Beane) Fintonis, age 66, of Nahant, formerly of Peabody, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of George Fintonis, with whom she shared 45 years of marriage. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Sadie (Legro) Beane. She graduated from Lynn English High School, Salem State College, Northeastern University and N.E. School of Law. Prior to her retirement, Susan was a law professor at Endicott College and Northeastern University. Most recently, she was a special education test administrator for the Chelsea school system. Over 100 academics, activists, survivors, faith community leaders, and community organizers united in their commitment to ending inhumane treatment of prisoners through solitary confinement. The one day conference featured speakers and panel discussions on the use of solitary confinement in the United States, as well as breakout strategy sessions for participants to define plans of action and tactical options. Islam in America: Rezwan Ferdaus, born in Massachusetts to parents of Bangladeshi descent, is a physics graduate of Northeastern University in Boston. He was arrested in the city last September after an elaborate undercover investigation by the FBI lasting several months, officials say. Ferdaus began planning "jihad" (holy war) against the United States in 2010 after jihadist websites and videos convinced him the United States was evil, prosecutors told the Associated Press. Foreign Students *** American Jobs Each year, the State Department recruits 100,000 foreign university students to travel to the United States to take high-demand summer jobs. (See Department of State website for J-1 Visa Summer Work Program, 2012) The Summer Work Travel program (SWT), which operates off of the J-1 visa, is billed as a cultural exchange opportunity for foreign students, and gives them access to paid, unskilled positions such as restaurant waitstaff, pool lifeguards, hotel clerks, summer camp staff, and more. (Id.; see also New York Times, May 4, 2012) The SWT program was created nearly fifty years ago, when unemployment conditions were much different than they are today. Now the demand for these jobs is at an all-time high.
