5 Ebola LIES our government is telling you The biggest threat to American health isn't Ebola -- it's the people who are supposed to keep you safe from Ebola. Because Ebola is oozing, bleeding proof that Uncle Sam's incompetence is putting folks like you at risk. And while our politicians scramble to cover their backsides (and keep you in line) they are spreading five dangerous lies about this disease. Today I'm pulling back the curtain -- and showing you how to stay safe. Lie A travel ban won't work. A Liberian man practically hand delivered Ebola to America on a commercial airline -- and Obama STILL insists a travel ban won't keep you safe. Well, Obama is a politician, not a mathematician. Because a new statistical model from a Northeastern University physicist has PROVEN that a travel ban would slash America's Ebola risk by 66% -- nearly overnight! Lie Our hospitals are ready for Ebola. Remember that "preparedness" song and dance the CDC was selling weeks ago? In a recent survey, four out of five Americ ...
The Ebola outbreak will reach 24 cases diagnosed in the U.S. by the end of the month, according to a new computer model first reported by Insurance Journal. Researchers tracking the virus concede that it “could be” smaller and limited to “a couple of airline passengers who enter the country already infected without showing symptoms, and the health workers who care for them,” said Alessandro Vespignani, a Northeastern University professor who runs computer simulations of infectious disease outbreaks. Vespignani added that the two nurses affected in the Dallas Ebola case do not alter the numbers “because they were identified quickly and it’s unlikely they infected other people.” While that is seemingly good news on the Ebola outbreak front, many Americans are concerned because much of what they’ve been told by the CDC has been questionable, and Vespignani made those comments prior to ...

Our Judge: Mary Russell   About the Artist: Mary Russell was born in Aurora, Illinois, a small town outside of Chicago. She says, "from the first time she received a big container of Crayola crayons, she knew she wanted to be an artist. My parents were very supportive of my aspirations so they arranged private instruction on Saturdays with a local artist."   While attending high school in Tulsa, OK, Mary was fortunate to have an art instructor who helped her organize a portfolio for submission to a local religious university where she received an art scholarship. She continued her fine arts education at Northeastern University, then life intervened. Beginning a family postponed her dreams of art for awhile.  It was ten years before she picked up a brush again. She took that brush with her as she traveled the country studying with artists whom she admired.   "I have so much appreciation for my non-academic art education," she says. "I studied with wonderful working artists of m ...
Thank you Jeanne Berrong for sharing Stephen Krashen: Published in Wall Street Journal 01/09/2014 To the editor Maybe We Should Stem the Panic and Consider Needs Re: Common Core Doesn't Add Up to STEM Success Ms. Stotsky thinks that all high-school students should be required to take trigonometry and precalculus to be ready for the brave new world of science, technology, engineering and math. Even if the STEM crisis were real, this is not a good idea. Of course, advanced math classes should be offered, but there is no reason to require them of everybody. Michael Handel of Northeastern University has concluded that only about 10% of the workforce uses math beyond algebra II. Also, it is not clear that the crisis is real. It is not clear that there is a compelling need for more STEM workers. Some studies conclude that there are too many qualified candidates. Rutgers University professor Hal Salzman has reported that there are approximately three qualified graduates annually for each science or technology op ...

Just experienced two of the most quintessential Cambridge social justice moments of my 50-plus years teaching liberation pedagogy ---all in one day! (1) The 5 Kimbrough Scholars presented their "discoveries" of critical evidentiary material (possibly incriminating) regarding the unsolved "Cold Case" of Eugene Bell -- fatally beaten/"lynched" in Liberty, Mississippi (1945). The Kimbrough Scholars program is a collaboration between 6 retired Cambridge educators/activists, The CRLS Social Studies Department and Northeastern University Law School's Center for Civil Rights and Social Justice. Established by law professor Margaret Burnham, the CRSJ Center deploys law school students to investigate unsolved lynchings that occurred throughout the country with a focus on cases from the 20's through 50's. Much like the "Innocents Project" that discovers new evidence that proves the innocents of condemned women and men awaiting execution on Death Rows and leads to their acquittal, the NEU Center for Civil Rights and ...

The shootings in California at USC were indeed a terrible episode and in many respects should have never happened, but that is hindsight. Since folks with the Liberal slant will come out calling for gun bans, I would like to make everyone aware of some interesting data. NBC News has reported that gun violence has dropped dramatically in the last 20 years. CDC reports that non-fatal gun crimes have decreased by 75% and a reduction of 49% of gun homicides. My other research has shown that with gun sales rising so much in the last 4-5 years, that gun crimes have gone down more. You ladies are doing good, your purchase of firearms for protection has gone up 83% and that was in 2009! And 46.5% of you are going to the target range! Interestingly enough, almost 60% of the public believe that gun violence has gone up and are totally unaware that it has actually gone down. You may draw your own conclusions to how that has happened! James Allan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University, has also found that t ...
SHE HUGGED FIRSTByBeverly Jean GonzalezIt was 28 years ago, that I met Dr. Maya Angelou.  I was a single mother living with my father's family on the south-side of Chicago,at the time.  It was while working at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange as a market quotes reporter that I read in the local paper that she would be giving a speech at Northeastern University. What was even more interesting was that the event was open to the general public as well.  I did not have a car, at that time, but I was determined to go. With childcare in place and camera in bag, I left work to go to a place I had never been before.  I arrived there 3 hours early and was the only one in the entire auditorium.  I made myself comfortable in one of the seats not too close to the front (I was not about to be subjected to the “these seats are reserved for people more important than you speech”.not that night!) After a long day at work, I welcomed the rest.  As I waited with my loaded Canon, my mind went back to my mid-t ...

How Warren Buffett Made Me Smarter About Charity Forbes We give a few bucks to this charity and a few to that, but are we really helping to make the world a better place? Richard Eisenberg writes in Forbes about a six-week online course he took on charitable giving and how it changed his thinking. Don’t be misled by the article title: Warren Buffett had nothing to do with it, though his sister did. Doris Buffett’s Learning by Giving Foundation partnered with Northeastern University to offer the course, which taught students how to evaluate nonprofits according to, among other things, their management and operational excellence. But good luck trying to get that kind of information from nonprofits. Eisenberg was “surprised — no, disappointed — by how few provided the kind of specifics about their financials and staffing that would let prospective donors make informed decisions.” One important lesson: Don’t discount a charity simply because it pays its executives well. Another: If you’re goin ...

I am so proud of my two daughters. I confess I have not told them this enough. This is my fault which I intend to remedy here and in other places. My oldest Marcela Falck- Bados has endured more in her life than most of us already, Yet, she has thrived. I can now come back and tell you that she was in the end accepted to go to college by American University, George Mason University, Northeastern University and of course her final choice which was Texas A&M University (One of my Alma Maters, Gig Em Aggie!!!). She has accomplished more than any of her parents at her age. This fills me with joy. My youngest Gabriela Gabi Falck-Bados also has endured many challenges, while continuing to thrive. I do not know what she will do in life but I do not have a doubt that her choice will be unique. When the time comes, I will also congratulate her for her academic achievements and tell her how proud I am of her accomplishments.

Jamaal St John Feature Artist Bio Born Jamaal Robert St. John in the quaint town of New Rochelle, New York, this performance poet/spoken word artist has been honing his literary craft for 19 years. Jamaal is a graduate of New Rochelle High School and attended Northeastern University majoring in Criminal Justice. This poet’s lyrical style is like no other. Jamaal’s poetry is a cross between old school hip-hop rhyme schemes with cunning wordplay, accentuated with relevant social, political, cultural and economic topics. Jamaal manages to layer these aspects with a comical dexterity that only few poets can match. Jamaal has many accolades to his credit. He is a five (6) time Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam Finalist for years 1996, 1997, 2000, 2008, 2010, & 21012 (he is the only poet in Nuyorican Poets Café history to do so) and has won the coveted title of Nuyorican Slam King (December 2000). Important Letter Regarding the Suspension of Students for Justice in Palestine: Dear Northeastern Community, As many of you are aware from recent news articles, a decision was announced earlier this week by the Northeastern University administration to suspend the Students for Justice in Palestine student group (SJP) through the end of 2014. We believe this was a necessary action taken by the university in enforcing the student code of conduct, and we applaud the university for taking a stand in holding students accountable for their actions, and creating an environment that sustains open dialogue. As a bi-partisan, politically focused organization, Huskies for Israel (HFI) shares an interest a concern for Middle East issues. SJP’s recent methods of engagement, however, are based on intimidation tactics, publicity stunts and walk-outs which do not leave space for open discussion or reasoned debate. When any student group breaks the code of conduct, it is vital that they be held accountable. To this end, ...

Writing Off the Unemployed By PAUL KRUGMAN February 9, 2014 Back in 1987 my Princeton colleague Alan Blinder published a very good book titled “Hard Heads, Soft Hearts.” It was, as you might guess, a call for tough-minded but compassionate economic policy. Unfortunately, what we actually got — especially, although not only, from Republicans — was the opposite. And it’s difficult to find a better example of the hardhearted, softheaded nature of today’s G.O.P. than what happened last week, as Senate Republicans once again used the filibuster to block aid to the long-term unemployed. What do we know about long-term unemployment in America? First, it’s still at near-record levels. Historically, the long-term unemployed — those out of work for 27 weeks or more — have usually been between 10 and 20 percent of total unemployment. Today the number is 35.8 percent. Yet extended unemployment benefits, which went into effect in 2008, have now been allowed to lapse. As a result, few of the long-term ...

FINAL: Boston College defeats Northeastern University, 4-1, in the Championship. Fifth-straight for the Eagles.
Quote of the Day: "[I]f you think the typical long-term unemployed American is one of Those People — nonwhite, poorly educated, etc. — you’re wrong, according to research by the Urban Institute’s Josh Mitchell. Half of the long-term unemployed are non-Hispanic whites. College graduates are less likely to lose their jobs than workers with less education, but once they do they are actually a bit more likely than others to join the ranks of the long-term unemployed. And workers over 45 are especially likely to spend a long time unemployed... "[I]n a weak job market long-term unemployment tends to be self-perpetuating, because employers in effect discriminate against the jobless. Many people have suspected that this was the case, and last year Rand Ghayad of Northeastern University provided a dramatic confirmation. He sent out thousands of fictitious résumés in response to job ads, and found that potential employers were drastically less likely to respond if the fictitious applicant had been out of ...

By now, we should all be well-aware of the fact that most women like, want, and have sex. Still to some, the thought of a girl taking advantage of a guy seems like a bit of a stretch because of physical differences. However, women don’t rely on brute strength to get what they want in bed or out of life. We use our womanly wiles, among other charming attributes and earned qualifications. But men aren’t about to acknowledge that they are in any way powerless against us because social misconceptions about gender and sexuality won’t allow it. Prevailing beliefs say that girls need to be protected against unwanted sexual advances, and guys can fend for themselves because they’re bigger and stronger. But sometimes size doesn’t matter and men are the ones who might need protecting, especially when women can use highly effective methods of manipulation that don’t involve any amount of physical force to get sexual pleasure. While cases of female sexual assault are more prevalent, males are not exempt. ...

"It almost seems like another life, or like it could've, should've, just been a nightmare. But it's very real. Several years ago, Danielle Douglas, now 31, was trafficked into sex slavery. Her story does not begin with a spring break gone wrong, or in a dusty town in Cambodia, or on a dark, brothel-lined alleyway in Bangkok. It starts in an apartment in Boston. Douglas was 17 years old in 2000 when she moved from New Jersey to start college at Northeastern University. One night, when she arrived at what she thought was a party, she found nothing of the sort. There was only one man there, who appeared to be in his mid-40s. He claimed to feel badly that there had been a misunderstanding, so he offered her in for dinner. For the next two weeks, they casually kept in touch. Mass shootings, myths and the uneasy truth JUSTIN PETERS. From the AFR this morning. An interesting article that provides a new perspective. There are a lot of things we think we know about mass shootings: that they come about when mentally unstable individuals suddenly snap; that there are more and more of them every year; that smarter and stricter laws can help prevent them. A new article in the journal Homicide Studies says that all of those assumptions are wrong. In the article, titled “Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown” Northeastern University criminologists James Alan Fox and Monica DeLateur examine existing research and data to refute 11 common assumptions about mass murder – which the FBI defines as any single, sustained incident that takes the lives of four or more victims. Many of their points seem like the starting point for a conversation, rather than the end of one. But if we’re going to have a national conversation about mass shootings – and we’re already havi ...

Violence against females is the most widely reported violent crime in the West African country of Liberia, affecting hundreds of thousands of women and girls, says a new report from the Small Arms Survey. Such violence has been used as a weapon of war throughout Liberia's tumultuous recent history. According to Liberian peace and women's rights activist Leymah Gbowee, there is little education, or justice, in the areas of sexual violence and sexual health in Liberia. Although she says the country has "done well" since the civil war ended in 2003, "there's still a long way to go" in the country with the worst teen pregnancy rates in West Africa – 3 out of 10 teenage girls get pregnant, she told students at Northeastern University this week. Many believe the violence ended with the peaceful election of the current president, Africa's first democratically elected female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the truth is that violence against women and girls (shortened to VAWG for the purposes of the brief ...

GENUINE TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION IS FOR FREE SELLING & PURCHASING A MANTRA IS TOTALLY UNETHICAL & A FRAUD Lecturing at Boston’s Northeastern University in the summer of 1969, Śrīla Prabhupāda introduces a meditation system renowned for its extraordinary power and the fact that it can be easily practiced almost anywhere and at any time. “If you take up this simple process,” he says, “chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma Hare Hare, you are immediately elevated to the transcendental platform.” He adds, “No other meditation is possible while you are walking on the street.” " My dear boys and girls, I thank you very much for attending this meeting. We are spreading this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement because there is a great need of this consciousness throughout the world. And the process is very easy—that is the advantage. First of all, we must try to understand what the transcendental platform is. As far a ...
What does Freedom of Expression mean to you? I'll be asking that question tomorrow, based on the headline news stories concerning Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty's statements in a GQ magazine interview. TMZ is reporting this evening that Phil Robertson's family may have told A&E that if their patriarch is going to be suspended that they will refuse to continue with the series. What's been reported is that Phil Robertson has publicly stated things very similar to what he told GQ. In that event, should A&E have been prepared for what he told the magazine? What does Freedom of Expression (in the U.S. it's Freedom of Speech) mean to you? I'll also be speaking with U.S. talk show host Ken Coleman who last year interviewed Chik-Fil-A president and CEO Dan Cathy when Cathy created international headlines and reaction for saying same-sex marriaqe is "inviting God's judgment on our nation." Northeastern University refused to permit a Chik-Fil-A franchise on it's Boston campus after Dan Cathy's statements to Ken ...

30 mass killings, 137 victims: A typical year Dominguez III was only 6 months old when he was shot in the head in Oklahoma City in August. The infant was the youngest victim of a mass killing this year. The oldest: Dottie and Bob Pape, both 84, of Fernley, Nevada, shot during an apparent robbery. Amario and the Papes are three of the 137 people who died in 30 mass killings in 2013. In the year since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School horrified the world and prompted calls for laws that would prevent mass killings, little has changed. The violence and victims in 2013 are in line with the average since 2006 - 29 mass killings and 147 victims a year, according to an exclusive USA TODAY database. "Everyone is always asking 'Why are these mass killings increasing?' '' says criminologist James Alan Fox, professor of criminology at Northeastern University. "They are not.'' It's Been 20 Years Since the LI Rail Road Massacre Before Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora, and Newtown, there was the Long Island Rail Road. On Dec. 7, 1993, a gunman opened fire on a train car filled with commuters leaving New York City. By the time passengers tackled Colin Ferguson, his fusillade had left six people dead and 19 wounded. Though other massacres have far superseded it in terms of casualties, there are aspects of the railcar shooting that, even two decades later, make it stand out in the sad pantheon of rampages that have horrified the nation. "In a mall or a school or a movie theater, there is at least some opportunity for hiding or escaping," says a criminology professor at Northeastern University. "These people had nowhere to go." And then there was the trial. Ferguson defended himself in court, cross-examining the very people he terrorized. Ferguson, who boarded the train in Queens, claimed that he waited to open fire until the train crossed over the New York City border out of respect ...

Good Morning Everyone: For the basketball heads out there, and no not the NBA folks lol. From my basketball blog at My basketball thoughts today! Wednesday, November 20, 2013 What is going on in college basketball? First the powerful and tradition rich University of North Carolina, yes that North Carolina and not UNC Asheville, NC Central, UNC Greensboro, or even Winston Salem State U of North Carolina, lost to a super coached Belmont University team with a roster full of rivals 2 star and 1 star players at best. Well, so much for the sophisticated system of ranking HS basketball players! Or maybe the rankings should include dedication, hard work, and basketball intelligence and educability! Now we fast forward and watch Drexel of the Colonial Athletic Conference, a school that has a great academic reputation and the best Cooperative Education Program this side of Northeastern University in Boston come into a magnificent arena not even 1/4 filled with fans and beat a t ...

LET LIBERTY LIGHT THE WAY FOR VIRGINIA! VOTE " E.W. Jackson " for LT GOVERNOR! Former United States Marine Corps. E.W. Jackson then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree(BA), Summa *** Laude with a Phi Beta Kappa Key from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Three years later he graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor (JD). While in law school, he was accepted into the Baptist ministry and studied theology at Harvard Divinity School. Since returning to his ancestral home of Virginia, he has also taught graduate courses in Business and Commercial Law at Strayer University in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. In 1997, he retired from his private law practice in order to devote full time to ministry. However, he still taught law and maintained both his avid interest in – and commitment to – civic and political respon ...
*** this week is busy! On top of all the papers I'm failing to write, there's a lot of performances. This SUNDAY, Lewis M., Lissa Piercy (and myself) of Flatline Poetry performed our new poem "Worship" at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, in a service inspired by poetry! TONIGHT I'm heading over to Northeastern University for auditions to be in a student spoken word showcase called Beatless (come with me!), WEDNESDAY Lissa, Lewis and I are gonna rock the stage at Quality and Soul, THURSDAY I will be performing at the gallery opening of The Haystack Show in the Student Life Gallery at Mass Art (so bummed I can't make it to "if you can Feel it, you can Speak it"... maybe I'll come late) and on FRIDAY, Flatline will be checking out the First Friday's open mic at The First Baptist Church in JP. And then (maybe) I will sleep.
At one time,The Braves played at this park and others built here because of fires burning them down, and The Red Sox played at The Huntington Grounds (site of Northeastern University)! The 2 parks were about a Home Run apart in distance!
I'm from western Pennsylvania, up the Allegheny from Pittsburgh, and the Pirates have always been 'my team'. Sadly, they didn't quite make it. I went to graduate school at Northeastern University in Boston, and lived on Peterborough Street, 1 1/2 blocks from Fenway Park. I had adopted the Sox as my team years earlier, when I attended games with my big brother Glenn when he was a student at MIT. I livied at Apt 43 36 Peterborough Street. I could see into, but not to the ground, Fenway Park, from my kitchen. Of course I could also see into a kitchen one floor down, where the tenant would sometimes come to her refrigerator entirely nude - but I guess that's another story. Jose Santiago lived next door. My apartment was $85 per month. The living room was maybe 12 feet long and sloped 13 inches. Today it is a condominium at perhaps $400,000. A minor question is " how did they level he building?" A major question is " where did they find space for an elevator" I lived on the fourth floor, and carri ...
