This footage from state broadcaster KCNA shows dramatic scenes of mourning as the cortege moved through heavy snowfall across the capital Pyongyang in a 25-mile, three-hour procession. The HBO news show "Vice" is probably one of thee rawest news programs ever. This weeks episode "Rocky Mountain High/North Korean Defectors" was another very interesting episode, especially if you follow North Korean history/politics. A remarkable comment made by a church worker that assists North Koreans defect to South Korea summed it up like this: "If you think of North Korea as a country, you would be very wrong. You must think of North Korea as a religion. Kim Il-sung is God/the Father, Kim Jong-un is Jesus/the Messiah, and the party is the Holy Spirit." I heard a saying once, "Religions are flawed because men are flawed." Retrospectively, one could say all religions have their flaws, it's simply a matter of degree and relativity.
Since my Book Club read "The Orphan Master's Son" by Adam Johnson, I have been absolutely fascinated by North Korea. Now I've found another extremely interesting book about everyday life under Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, etc. It's called "Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick. I recommend it highly.

Why should the Capitalists not dislike and kill Stalin 51 million times ? In August 1939, Stalin entered into a non- aggression pact with Nazi Germany, but Germany later violated the agreement and launched a massive invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. Despite heavy human and territorial losses, Soviet forces managed to halt the Nazi incursion after the decisive battles of Moscow and Stalingrad. After defeating the Axis powers on the Eastern Front, the Red Army captured Berlin in May 1945, effectively ending the war in Europe for the Allies. The Soviet Union subsequently emerged as one of two recognized world superpowers, the other being the United States. The Yalta and Potsdam Conferences established communist governments in the Eastern Bloc countries as buffer states , which Stalin deemed necessary in case of another invasion. He also fostered close relations with Mao Zedong in China and Kim Il-sung in North Korea. A country could be an western colony , but instead it became wortld power by dint o ...
July 08: Kim Il-sung Kim Il-sung, the communist leader of North Korea (1948–94) whose invasion of South Korea in 1950 launched the Korean War, died on this day in 1994 in P'yŏngyang and was succeeded by his son Kim Jong Il.
TODAY IN HISTORY (1994): Upon the death of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il became the Supreme Leader of North Korea.
[tbs 정오뉴스] ▶(Report) Today Marks 63rd Anniversary Of Korean War Outbreak On June 25th, 1950, the day also known as Yuk-ee-oh in Korea, a war broke out between the two already-divided Koreas when the North crossed the 38th parallel. Under then-President Rhee Syngman, South Korea was supported by the United Nations, while North Korea, under the rule of Kim Il-sung, was backed by the Soviet Union. North Korean communist soldiers advanced southward at the beginning of the war, but the U.S.-led foreign forces intervened and pushed them north toward the border with China, until Chinese troops stepped in to drive down coalition forces supporting the South. The war ended with a cease-fire with the battle line drawn near the 38th parallel. On July 27, 1953, North Korea and China signed an armistice agreement with the United States, thus creating the Korean Demilitarized Zone--the border between the two Koreas. There is no official record of how many lives were lost during the three-year war, but historia ...
While Atheism may not be a religion, some non-theistic religions have holy books and godlike figures. Just as Martin Luther created the Protestant virus, Karl Marx created a Marxist virus based on tenets of faith in an historical imperative. Marx had no more evidence for his historical imperative than Christians do for a second coming of Christ. Marxism infected many hosts, mutated in ways that helped it survive and replicated in the minds of thousands, then millions. It eventually evolved into the various practices of communism that in almost all cases led to a cult of personality such as found in Stalinism, Maoism and others in Korea, Cambodia, Cuba and Romania.   While these are not technically theistic, the head is god-like in the sense that Caesar or Pharaoh was a god. Communist cults even worship their dead gods! Thus, Lenin has an elaborate tomb that is still visited by thousands of people every year. Kim Il-sung, former dictator of North Korea, died in 1994 but he is officially the “President o ...
RECOLLECTION OF THE KING (Con't) James Gerrand The height of the Cold War in the 1950s seemed like poor timing for tiny Cambodia to be defying the might of America US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was exasperated by the audacity of Prince Norodom Sihanouk’s antics in refusing to join the SEATO alliance set up to counter the “red menace” from toppling the dominoes of SE Asia. “You must choose,” Dulles told Cambodia’s head of state. “You cannot be neutral!” But Sihanouk was determined to align with the non-aligned nations. To duck Uncle Sam’s embrace, he made it his business to befriend on the most personal level all the key leaders of the so-called ‘third world’, most significantly, Mao Tse Tung and Zhou Enlai of China, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Indonesia’s President Sukarno, Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia and Kim Il-sung of North Korea. This was bold defiance for an uppity prince with no real army he could rely on to protect himself, let alone one to defend Cambodia’s bor ...

North Korea's Kim Jong-un calls for stronger economy in New Year address-- Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, has given a surprise televised address for the New Year, calling for a "radical turnaround" in his country's moribund economy. It was the first New Year's Day broadcast for 19 years; Mr Kim's father, Kim Jong-il, was rarely heard or seen by his people, preferring to deliver his New Year message in a joint editorial across the country's three main state newspapers. However, the younger Kim likes to style himself after his charismatic grandfather, Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea who continues to enjoy huge popularity. The 29-year-old made his address standing at a huge wooden lectern in front of two vases of what appeared to be purple Kimilsungia flowers, a type of orchid named after his grandfather. The more round and squat Kimjongilia flower was not visibly on display. He vowed that North Korea would "open up a new phase" and make a "radical turnaround" in its economy in 2013, perhaps s ...
North Korea's Kim Jong-un is trying to create a people-friendly leader image by using his wife, Ri Sol-ju, to create a stable and gentle persona. However, North Koreans know that this is just a mere show. As long as Kim Jong-un does not strive for the benefit of his people, he is no different from Kim Il-sung or Hitler.
How to account for the survival of North Korea? After all, Kim Il-sung's communist state that emerged from the end of the Second World War shared most of the same characteristics as Ceau_escu's Romania, Honecker's East Germany, Mobutu's Zaire and Hoxha's Albania, to name but a few. They are all long...

7-23-2012 Under ‘guidance’ in N. Korea By Donald Kirk PYONGYANG – You don’t come here looking for news about North Korea. On the day after ``Respected Leader” (that’s what we’re supposed to call him) Kim Jong-un and his mystery lady attended a show featuring Walt Disney characters on stage, our minders were fonts of ignorance. They professed to know nothing about an event we’d seen reported by BBC on TV sets in the luxury hotels for foreign guests. You’re so tightly controlled in North Korea you have a hard time finding real non-news, that is, soft stuff that gives a clue as to what’s going on. On my latest visit, I’ve now seen the home where Kim Il-sung spent his childhood for the fifth time. I’ve traipsed for the third time through the Fatherland Liberation War Museum, and I’ve been to the Juche Tower looming high above the Daedong River three or four times ― I don’t think it was completed during my first visit here 20 years ago. Oh, and no visit would be complete without a ...
Did you know that the current Lieutenant Governor of Florida, who is a member of the Republican Party, had to resign from the National Commission on Presidential Scholars when it was discovered her Master of Business degree was from Kensington University where she "graduated" in 1995. She did go back and get another MBA from St. Leo University in 2008. Kensington University was known as a diploma mill, and finally shut down by court order. Another notable "alumnus" of Kensington U.? Kim Il-sung of North Korea.
N. Korea rocket launch grows imminent despite anger By Gilles Campion (AFP) – 1 day ago PYONGYANG — North Korea on Tuesday put the finishing touches to its latest rocket ahead of a politically charged launch that will defy a swelling chorus of international concern including in China and Russia. With regional airlines and shipping going on alert, and Japan deploying its anti-missile systems, the impoverished but nuclear-armed North said it was set to install the rocket's satellite payload. "We are expecting to complete assembly by today," Ryu Kum-Chol, a senior member of the communist state's Committee for Space Technology, said in a briefing for foreign journalists in Pyongyang. The launch is scheduled between April 12 and 16 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's founding leader Kim Il-Sung, a significant date as Kim's youthful grandson Kim Jong-Un cements his own power. Tens of thousands in the tightly regimented state have been sprucing up the capital Pyongyang for mass festiv ...
This DigitalGlobe satellite image, obtained on March 30, shows Tongch'ang-ni Launch Facility on North Korea's northwest coast. The President said the government would implement security measures and seek help from other countries, such as the member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in convincing Pyongyang not to push through with the launch.
