The Sony Hack Is A Watershed Moment — Especially If North Korea Is Involved : Source: Business Insider:– The hack on Sony Pictures Entertainment is one of the most debilitating ever targeted at US corporate servers. The Nov 24th incident didn’t just result in the theft of proprietary data, including unreleased films and employee information. It is reportedly the first to use “a highly destructive class of malicious software that is designed to make computer networks unable to operate” into a company’s computer system in the United States, according to Reuters. North Korea has emerged as a leading suspect in the hack. Pyongyang had already vowed “merciless” retaliation over “The Interview,” a Sony release in which James Franco and Seth Rogan play talk show hosts that the CIA enlists for an assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. And it has greatly developed its cyber-offensive capabilities over the past decade. An unnamed security source told Reuters that North Korea ...

Japan is global economic powerhouse and has close ties with USA, the global boss in all spheres. China is fast emerging economically and militarily, incidentally initially with the help of Japan and USA and now wants to bully these powerful nations themselves, in order to emerge as global superpower. Even though Japan has shown restraint, of late China seems determined to have a face-off with Japan. All credit goes to PM Mr Shinzo Abe for sensing Chinese ploy early, which many nations, including India could not do and result was India's humiliation at Chinese hands in early 1960s, which India as a nation can never forget. China has very cleverly cultivated very close friendship with North Korea and Pakistan. It uses North Korea's nuclear gimmicks to create panic in whole East Asia and USA. On the other hand China uses Pakistan to destabilize India and whole of South Asia and also to cultivate friendship with oil rich Muslim nations. This whole discussion above ensues that Japan and India not only require ...

Amid a flurry of post-election promises of reform by the government, an index released by Transparency International (TI) yesterday shows that Cambodia’s public sector is perceived to be the most corrupt in ASEAN, and second only to North Korea in all of East Asia.
Near South Korea's main international airport, the national government is constructing a type of building never seen before in this country -- a large complex capable of accommodating more than 1,000 refugee applicants. As South Korea becomes more developed and better-known, with its TV shows and pop music appreciated around the world, the country is receiving more refugee applicants, and the government is still figuring out how to handle them. South Korea also receives many escapees from North Korea -- more than 1,000 per year in the past, which complicates relations with Pyongyang and Beijing. Between 1994 and 2003, South Korea received only 251 refugee applications from non-North Koreans. That number jumped to 1,143 in 2012 -- with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal being the three most common countries of origin. A fairly low portion of those applicants is being accepted: Between 1994 and 2003, 14 were accepted; 60 applications were successful in 2012. In contrast, fewer North Koreans are arriving in Seoul ...

Kaesong historic site makes UNESCO heritage list North Korea's historic monuments and sites in the old Koryo Dynasty capital Kaesong have made UNESCO's World Heritage list. This is the North's second heritage site after the complex of the Koguryo Tombs was listed in 2004. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee made the decision on Sunday in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. North Korean delegates raised their national flag and cheerfully responded when representatives from other countries congratulated them. The new heritage site consists of palaces, a fortress and a tomb complex dating from the 10th to the 14th centuries. The committee said the complex testifies to the transition from Buddhism to neo-Confucianism in East Asia. One of the North Korean delegates said the registration is a great honor for his country's people. Kaesong is near the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. The 2 countries operated an industrial park in the city until April. Jun. 23, 2013 - Updated 14:09 UTC Top Stories *** ...

Uploaded on Feb 6, 2012 News Update | On April 3 2013, Chinese officials called for calm in Korea as Washington announced that it would deploy missiles and more troops to East Asia, the island of Guam, Australia and the West coast of the US territory amid a crisis over North Korea's nuclear program. Washington has been enhancing its military ties and alliances throughout the region to contain and encircle China. In this sense, the target of the US deployments is not only North Korea but mainly China. In fact, USA Today already mentioned the training shift towards the Asia-Pacific region at Dyess in an article published in August 2012. The article added that the new strategy, which was announced in January 2012 by President Barack Obama, sought to "counter the rising power of China". Moreover, during a recent meeting of Obama with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Washington, the US president announced the sending of more US warships to the area of the Malacca Strait, a waterway that connects t ...
Who wrote this stupid book? Rand McNally & School House 's Atlas of the world 2005 (children's illustrated), in its East Asia section, says South Korea is most of the farmland while North Korea is highly industrialized. Plus, they put a wrong flag for S. Korea. It's not funny because the books are at school libraries and used for homework. Now it makes me believe that a published info. by stupid guys can be less reliable than Wikipedia or even googling! I emailed the publisher for the correction.

US Officials: North Korea poses serious threat WASHINGTON (AP) — An unpredictable North Korea, with its nuclear weapons and missile programs, stands as a serious threat to the United States and East Asia nations, the director of National Intelligence warned Tuesday in a sober assessment of worldwide threats. Testifying before a Senate panel, James R. Clapper delivered the U.S. intelligence community's overview of global threats posed by terrorism, cyber attacks, weapons of mass destruction, the months-long civil war in Syria and the unsettled situation in post-Arab Spring nations. The outlook on North Korea comes as the communist regime announced that it was "completely scrapping" the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War and has maintained peace on the peninsula for more than half a century. The Obama administration on Monday slapped new sanctions against North Korea's primary exchange bank and several senior government officials as it expressed concern about the North's "bellicose rhetoric." US arms sales to Asia set to boom Washington, Dec 2 (bdnews24.com/Reuters)— US sales of warplanes, anti-missile systems and other costly weapons to China's and North Korea's neighbors appear set for significant growth amid regional security jitters. Strengthening treaty allies and other security partners is central to the White House's "pivot" toward a Pacific region jolted by maritime territorial disputes in China's case, and missile and nuclear programs, in North Korea's. The pivot "will result in growing opportunities for our industry to help equip our friends," said Fred Downey, vice president for national security at the Aerospace Industries Association, a trade group that includes top US arms makers. Demand for big-ticket US weapons is expected to stay strong for at least the next few years, the trade group said in a 2012 year-end review and forecast released in December. Fears resulting from China's growing military spending should lead to enough US sales in South and East Asia to more than offse ...
Answers Plane With Fighter Jets . Japan scrambled fighter jets over contested islands in the East China Sea after a small Chinese propeller plane entered what Tokyo considers its airspace. Coming just three days before general elections in Japan, Thursday's move sharply escalates territorial tensions that have already damaged economic relations between the two neighbors. The Japanese government said that eight F-15 fighter planes from the Air Self-Defense Force were dispatched to airspace over the islands after coast-guard patrol vessels confirmed the presence of a single Chinese aircraft 15 kilometers south of the island Uotsuri Jima. That is the biggest of the contested chain, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. A defense ministry spokesman said this is the first time that a Chinese aircraft has intruded into any Japanese airspace. The surprise incident underscores East Asia's heightened security tensions in a year of important leadership changes for the region's major players—China, Japan, ...
Canada joins in condemning North Korea rocket launch as tensions rise Mark MacKinnon Beijing — The Globe and Mail Published Tuesday, Dec. 11 2012, 11:54 PM EST Last updated Wednesday, Dec. 12 2012, 4:38 AM EST North Korea says it has successfully fired a rocket that put a satellite into space, defying warnings from the international community that it should not go ahead with a launch many governments saw as cover for testing Pyongyang’s ballistic missile technology. The launch looked certain to further raise tensions across East Asia, and could boost the chances of hawkish candidates ahead of key elections in both South Korea and Japan. “The second version of satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 successfully lifted off from the Sohae Space Center by carrier rocket Unha-3 on Wednesday,” the official Korean Central News Agency declared shortly after neighbouring countries reported the firing of a long-range rocket. “The satellite entered its preset orbit.” It was not immediately clear whether the launch w ...
"...Strong, even passionate, supporters of Israel should be troubled by the prospect of an Israeli government not only ignoring the policy choices of its powerful ally but also willing to intrude into American domestic politics in an attempt to influence or override the president’s foreign policy. Imagine, for example, that South Korea decided it was going to invade North Korea to destroy its nuclear facilities, potentially triggering a war on the Korean Peninsula that could bring in China and possibly other countries in the region. Indeed, South Korea could take its policy argument directly from Mitt Romney’s Web site: A nuclear weapons capability in the hands of an unpredictable dictatorship with unknown leadership and an unclear chain of command poses a direct threat to U.S. forces on the Korean Peninsula and elsewhere in East Asia, threatens our close allies South Korea and Japan, destabilizes the entire Pacific region, and could lead to the illicit transfer of a nuclear device to another rogue na ...

What's behind major flood disasters throughout Asia? Monsoonal rainfall and a tropical storm cause major flooding in the Philippines. A third typhoon in five days hits China. Weeks of rains and floods have wreaked havoc on parts of Korea. The recent uptick in tropical activity brings the Western Pacific tropical cyclone season back up to average after a slow start. But several recent flash-flooding events from higher-than-normal seasonal rainfall in southern Japan, as well as North Korea, have left soils full of moisture and vulnerable to additional flooding if typhoons and tropical storms track their way. This is a very real threat as the Western Pacific tropical season runs year-round, but has a seasonal peak around September, mirroring the tropical Atlantic. We will likely see more flooding disasters around East Asia over the next couple of months as the tropics heat up and cyclones traverse these hard-hit areas from the Philippines all the way to North Korea. The increased activity always has people w ...
[..] If the financial news is bad, the prospects for overall international stability look even worse. Military conflict is being threatened in several places; and this necessarily adds a further element of uncertainty. Strange as it may seem, there is war hysteria in China as a conflict with the Philippines over disputed islands heats up. Presently, the Chinese media depicts the Philippines as an obnoxious “puppet” of the United States, which is supposedly hampering China’s rise to greatness. Beijing feels that East Asia belongs to China, and they want the Americans to back out. Beijing says that any “escalation” by the Philippines will guarantee a Chinese response. The United States, of course, does not want war with China. And yet, a challenge is being issued. Trouble has also been brewing in another Asian hotspot. America and its allies in Northeast Asia are worried because a military provocation is expected from North Korea. Apparently the North Korean leadership has ordered “special actio ...
