Newcastle United: Alan Pardew knew Adam Campbell was ready for debut
Alan Pardew praised his Newcastle United side for 'winning ugly' as they launched another home fightback to see off Stoke on Sunday. The Magpies fell behind midway through the second half to a Jonathan Walters penalty, but Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse were on target for the hosts at St. James' Park to turn the Premier League fixture on its head and secure maximum points. United have been through similar scenarios in their previous two Tyneside league games - against Chelsea and Southampton - with identical victorious outcomes. And manager Pardew believes they yet again ground out the win on a difficult afternoon. "It was a tough game," "Stoke are really tough opposition, our fans are intelligent enough to know that. They defended deep, got bodies behind the ball, made us make mistake and we looked ugly. "But that's what they are good at, and they are always a threat, so to win it was a massive bonus for us. "We were quicker in the second half from set-plays - our throw-ins, goal-kicks and free-kicks. "We ...
Newcastle United 2 Stoke City 1- match report: Papiss Demba Cisse scored an injury-time winner against Stoke C...
An afternoon dominated by snow, swirling wind, set-pieces and another stellar defensive display from Newcastle United's Steven Taylor was decided by Papiss Cissé's stoppage-time winner. Cissé had spent much of the afternoon being caught offside but there was no flag as he met Sylvain Marveaux's pass before easing Newcastle's lingering relegation worries by half-volleying the ball beyond Asmir Begovic in front of the Gallowgate End. Kicking off in a snowstorm, Newcastle could have been forgiven for believing they were still in Russia. Alan Pardew had made seven changes to his starting line-up as he refreshed his side following Thursday's impressive 0-0 Europa League first-leg draw against Anzhi Makhachkala in Moscow. The bad news for St James' Park regulars was that Hatem Ben Arfa was injured again and did not even make the bench.

Hatem Ben Arfa has been left out of the Newcastle United side to face Stoke City this afternoon. The winger suffered injury at Anzhi on Thursday night in the Europa League in his first start in two months, and manager Alan Pardew will not risk him against The Potters at St James' Park.Papiss Cisse has recovered from illness and will lead the line this afternoon, while Shola Ameobi misses out after coming on as a substitute in Moscow in midweek.Tony Pulis' Potters feature a defensive-looking lineup, missing Robert Huth who is serving a ban for violent conduct.
On this day in 1973 Malcolm MacDonald scored as Newcastle United beat Stoke 1-0
A crucial match against Stoke today and the points are still to be put on the board – but what a great undercurrent in the preparations for today’s match, from the Newcastle United perspective of course. United’s position in the Premier League table might not have changed radically (yet…) but the transformation in hopes and expectations, in just over a month, has been remarkable. I don’t think many fans had any great expectations for the Europa League having seen the embarrassing display at Brighton in the FA Cup. It wasn’t an embarrassment getting beat by the south coast team because after all they are just one division below Newcastle, what was a total disgrace though was the performance of a team who after all were supposedly first team squad players. It looked as though United were not going to risk first team players in cup competitions and that the squad players coming in were clearly not going to get us anywhere once we played the better European teams in the competition. However, we ha ...
Yanga-Mbiwa earns praise: Newcastle United duo James Perch and Vurnon Anita have no doubts defender Mapou Yang...
We might not have learnt much about the opposition but we saw a very disciplined and assertive performance from Newcastle United that bodes well for the short and long-term. A shocking surface meant that Alan Pardew generally went for players with a lower centre of gravity who could turn and twist on the frozen artificial pitch. A great display with for me the likes of Mapou, Cabaye and Sissoko taking the honours, all three prepared to take responsibility and keep the ball when the tendency was to get rid as soon as possible. Newcastle will no doubt facing a better Anzhi side at St.James’ Park but the Russians will see a lot more of Alan Pardew’s big hitters in the return leg. United became the first team to take a point from Anzhi at ‘home’ and also the first visitors to keep a clean sheet, Liverpool one of those defeated earlier in the campaign. This is a great result and must make Newcastle favourites to go through, Howay The Lads! (Bell)

Newcastle United are the first team this season to prevent Anzhi from winning at home
Raul Rusescu won and converted a first-half penalty to give Steaua Bucharest a 1-0 win over last season's European champions Chelsea in the Europa League on Thursday. Lazio won 2-0 at VfB Stuttgart while Fenerbahce snatched a late win 1-0 at Czech side Viktoria Plzen in last 16 first leg ties. Goalkeeper Rob Elliot made a brilliant second-half save from Samuel Eto'o as Newcastle United held out for a dour goalless draw in bitterly cold conditions away to Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala. With the temperature well below zero, Anzhi started brightly but lost momentum after Brazilian playmaker Willian, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for 35 million euros at the start of February, went off injured after 22 minutes. Chelsea, who ended up in the competition after becoming the first titleholders to be eliminated in the Champions League group stage, are in danger of a second European exit of the season after losing in front of a full house at Bucharest's National Stadium. The only goal came when Ryan Bertrand ...

Coloccini injury blow for Magpies London - Newcastle United centre back Fabricio Coloccini will be out for up to seven weeks after breaking bones in his back, manager Alan Pardew... ~SportsMan
Newcastle United have been ordered by boss Alan Pardew to adopt an attacking mentality in their Europa League match against Anzhi Makhachkala. The Magpies boss believes that his side can win the trophy, and will send his troops out to gain an important away goal foothold, before heading back to St James’s to finish off their opposition. Tough opposition Anzhi will be the strongest team that the Toon Army will have faced all season in the competition, and Guus Hiddink’s big-spending side will be a tough nut to crack in their quest for European glory. Pardew was reported by the Independent as saying: “When you get to this stage, all the clubs have a chance. “You need some luck, but you need a good technical game and you need to have the right mentality in the group. Our mentality is strong.” Stretched squad Newcastle will face a tough task leaving Russia with an advantage, as they will be without at least six first team players. Newcastle United sponsors Wonga Wonga charge an obscene 4214 per cent APR on their loans according to radio five live today. I have been slagging Wonga Wonga and all loan shark companies and will continue to do so for making vast profits from the exploitation of the misery and suffering of the poorest members of our society. “Sponsoring a team in the North East of England where there is high youth unemployment, high levels of poverty, high crime and drug rates is well targeted from Wonga’s point of view but irresponsible from Newcastle United’s point of view.” Well said, Brand Republic.
Torres has scored just 14 Premier League goals since his British transfer record switch from Liverpool and the report says Chelsea may finally be ready to add further competition for the centre-forward role. It also claims Blues owner Roman Abramovich will sanction the move for Gomez, despite having just signed Demba Ba from Newcastle United in January. Gomez scored 41 goals for Bayern last season playing in a similar role to the centre-forwards at Chelsea. However, this impressive record couldn’t save him from the axe this season and he has played second fiddle to summer signing Mario Mandzukic. The report says incoming boss Pep Guardiola is unlikely to see a future for the 27-year-old striker and he could be available in the summer. Chelsea will have to be prepared to dig deep if they want to sign Gomez this summer, as he reportedly has a price tag in the region of £36million.
Hatem Ben Arfa will make his first step back into action for Newcastle United when he boards the flight to Moscow on Wednesday.
Don't Expect Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa To Stay Long! Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa says Newcastle United is "a stepping stone" in his career to play with "the best players". The 23-year-old former Montpellier defender is one of ten French players in the Magpies squad, and is now working hard to earn a regular place in central defence. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa: "It's a new league and a new team. It's not easy! "There's good football here, and people are passionate about football. "The fans live for their club, they're always behind their team and they do everything to help them perform as well as possible. "There's also a great tactical culture and recognition for good bits of skill on the pitch, even defensive ones. "There's everything I need here to thrive. Yohan Cabaye told nufc.co.uk what it meant to lead Newcastle out at Swansea on Saturday By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor Yohan Cabaye revealed his pride at leading out Newcastle United for the first time away at Swansea on Saturday. But the French midfielder would have swapped the captain's armband for all three points at the Liberty Stadium. A late striker from Swans substitute Luke Moore condemned the Magpies to only their second defeat in seven games, but it could have been very different had the visitors taken some of the numerous chances which came their way during the second half in South Wales. One of those fell to Cabaye, who saw his stunning long-range effort tipped onto the crossbar by home keeper Michel Vorm, and that would have put the seal on a memorable day for the former Lille man. Named United skipper in the absence of the injured Fabricio Coloccini , Cabaye admits the role is something relatively new, but relished every minute - apart from the result. "It means a lot ...
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has slammed the culture at Chelsea. Shearer labelled Chelsea an "embarrassing mess" in the wake of the outburst by Rafa Benitez.
Premier LeagueOUND UP: Manchester United's relentless march to the Premier League title shows no sign of abating as they opened up a 15-point lead at the summit courtesy of a 4-0 win over Norwich, while Chelsea are up to third after seeing off West Brom. Birthday boy Harry Redknapp had an afternoon to remember as he masterminded a QPR win at his former club Southampton; in a result made all the sweeter by the fact Everton were too strong for Reading at Goodison Park in claiming a 3-1 victory. West Ham conducted a perfect smash-and-grab job at Stoke City, Sunderland and Fulham shared four goals and the spoils at the Stadium of Light, while at the Liberty Stadium Swansea left it late to see off Newcastle United. In Saturday's late kick-off Liverpool were emphatic on their travels to North West neighbours Wigan as they eased to a 4-0 victory, which included a Luis Suarez hat-trick. Norwich never gave up the fight at Old Trafford but in Shinji Kagawa came up against a Manchester United player at the peak of h ...

Nile Ranger has parted from Newcastle United after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
SAMMY AMEOBI has already shown in training that he has all the attributes needed to play a big part as Boro's season reaches the make-or-break stage, says Tony Mowbray. The England U21 international winger joined the club this week on loan from Newcastle United for the remainder of the season and has wasted no time making an impression at Rockliffe Park. "He's been excellent in training and has really caught the eye,・said Mowbray. "He has really impressive control and ball manipulation and has scored a lot of goals in training. "If he plays against Cardiff he'll be nervous I'm sure, trying to make an impression on a new set of supporters, but he undoubtedly has the assets to make an impression." Mowbray has compared 6ft 4ins Ameobi to Muzzy Carayol, who recently returned to the first team squad after a long lay-off with a serious knee injury. Clemo

Newcastle United have won the Barclays Premier League with a victory over Everton; goals coming from Demba Ba and Marco Reus
John Carver has insisted that Newcastle United are not prepared to settle for mere Premier League survival this season. This week, while Swansea City have been celebrating their Capital One Cup win, the only focus at the club's Benton base has been taking three points from the Europe-bound Jacks - not to mention the realisation that there is more than just fending off relegation on the agenda for the Magpies. The Geordie assistant manager is well aware that expectations on Tyneside can spiral out of control both ways at St James' Park. And having worked with Sir Bobby Robson during an era when the iconic ex-England boss encouraged his players to have 'wild dreams', not to mention assisting Alan Pardew during the highest finish since the days of the Geordie Godfather, he knows how the good times can roll. There was panic when United slumped to the wrong end of the table amid a crippling injury crisis this season. But through it all and during a long hard winter Pardew, Carver and the rest of the backroom s ...

Pardew said with a smile: "No, I don't think any of that will be coming my way. "The windfall is earned from the success of his companies and what we have to do is get our own success here on and off the pitch, and we are working well towards that to generate our own money. "That's the brief that we have got and that's what we will have to do."

Yoan Gouffran says that Newcastle United could not have a better man to step into Fabricio Coloccini's boots than Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at Swansea City. That's if Argentina international Coloccini fails to shake off a back problem for the trip to the Liberty Stadium. United new boy Gouffran knows all about the qualities of the 23-year-old after grappling with him while in Bordeaux colours during Yanga-Mbiwa's stint as skipper of Montpellier. Now though the duo are united at Newcastle, and with Coloccini sweating on a back injury sustained in the 4-2 win over Southampton, Yanga-Mbiwa is poised for his first start in the Premier League. The French international was magnificent in Kharkiv during the 1-0 win against Metalist and he then slotted straight in at centre-back as Coloccini's replacement against the Saints. Now, though, he may be tasked to shackle the likes of 19-goal Michu at the Liberty Stadium, but Gouffran - who has made a flying start to his United career with a string of top-notch displays - knows ...

Birmingham have completed the signing of Shane Ferguson from Newcastle United on loan. At 21 he is a full Northern Irish international and can play at left-back or on the left-wing as well as having performed a role in the middle of a three at times this season. A very hardworking and energetic player with a decent amount of pace and okay delivery, could be a good signing in there short term. He'll no doubt replace Robert Hall who has gone back to West Ham following a groin injury. - Ryan.

Man United Linked With £17m Move to Sign Newcastle United Midfielder Old Trafford side keen on St James’ Park star. Man United are set to challenge Arsenal in the race to sign Magpies midfielder Yohan Cabaye according to Italian source TuttoMercato. The 27 year old French international is being linked with a St James’ Park exit but neither Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to meet the former Lille man’s £34m release clause but are ready to offer have that fee and will hope that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley may be tempted to sell a player who cost just £4.8m. Ashley financed a raft of transfer additions in January and may look to balance the books in the summer and Cabaye may well be keen on moving to a side that can offer him a taste of Champions League football. Cabaye had an excellent first season in the Premier League last term, impressing during Newcastle United’s fine 3-0 win over Man United, which could in turn sparked Ferguson’s interest in the cultured midfielder. Manager Alan Pardew has no fears over Rob Elliot Alan Pardew says that he would have 'no qualms' about handing Rob Elliot a start in Newcastle United's clash with Southampton. The Chronicle understands Tim Krul is feared to be out for five weeks - and that Steve Harper is unavailable for a fortnight thanks to a minor knee issue. Young understudy Jak Alnwick could therefore be set for a place on the bench against the Saints. United confirmed that Krul would miss the game and now faces further assessment on Monday. Former Charlton Athletic stopper Elliot comes into contention due to Krul's nasty ankle injury, sustained during the Europa League win over Metalist Kharkiv. He left the stadium on crutches with his leg protected with a plastic boot after a challenge from Cristaldo. Pardew told the Chronicle: 'I thought it was a bad challenge. That was a stamp. It was his ankle and we'll see how he responds.' Pardew - who worked with Elliot at Charlton - said: 'I'd have no qualms about Rob though. Rob has been ab ...

Just off the wires: Edinburgh: 20 February 2013: Heart of Midlothian FC to Sell Stadium Naming Rights. Reporter: Barry Anderson. In a sensational latest development for troubled Scottish professional football club, Heart of Midlothian, managing director Ventrilokwis Dummias today announced the club is close to selling the naming rights of its ground Tynecastle Stadium in a move that will bring in millions of pounds for owner Vladimir Romanov (Shouldn’t that be the club? – Ed.). Echoing the actions of football giants Manchester City and Newcastle United the under-fire SPL strugglers have vowed to have a completely new stadium name in place for next season or sooner. “Yes, we have big plans for Tynecastle,” said Dummias. The name change will be welcomed by the club’s long-suffering supporters fearing for their very future as a sustainable footballing entity. “Mr Romanov is pleased to announce that he has several businesses interested in putting their name to Tynecastle”, said Dummias. “The w ...

Reds midfielder Suso has revealed that his football idol changed when he arrived at Liverpool – with skipper Steven Gerrard overtaking French legend Zinedine Zidane. The Spaniard was in conversation with the official matchday programme, and you can read more of what the 19-year-old had to say below... Your first game? It was at school in Cadiz. In Spain, children would play five-versus-five. I remember it was in the afternoon and it was really hot! First boots? They were adidas Predator. It was the David Beckham model with the big tongues. I had a grey pair. First position? I started playing on the left wing and then I moved to midfield, then to a No.10 role and now right wing. I have moved across the pitch! Best goal? One I liked was for the reserves against Newcastle United. I think that was a really nice goal. Another that stands out was also with the reserves against Everton at Anfield. We were drawing 1-1 and I scored to make it 2-1. I would pick out those two. Shirt number? It's No.10 but I will k ...

Fact of the day - Newcastle United could pick 11 Frenchman, however they'd have to give a start to Gabriel Obertan so it won't ever happen.
It is not the end of the world with this player: Coloccini joined Newcastle United on a five-year contract in August 2008 for a fee of up to £10.3 million. Two days later, he made his debut against the reigning league champions, Manchester United, playing 90 minutes in a 1–1 away draw. Coloccini playing against Ipswich Town in 2010. Since his debut, Coloccini has been one of the most consistent inclusions in Newcastle's squad, and formed a partnership with fellow newcomer Sébastien Bassong in his first season. He was not immune to the pressures of representing Newcastle's infamous defence, coming under his most intense criticism for his performance in Newcastle's 5–1 defeat to Liverpool. Despite his mistakes in the game, manager Joe Kinnear voiced his support for Coloccini, stating that he believed his "Mr. Reliable" would bounce back. On 1 February, Coloccini was substituted against Sunderland in the 93rd minute. Up until this point, he had played every minute of every game for Newcastle all season ...
Moussa Sissoko: Papiss Cissé will find scoring touch Moussa Sissoko has backed Papiss Cissé to bury his frustrating campaign and hit the goal trail again when Newcastle United return to action next week. Cissé's season has not been the soar-away success that he enjoyed after joining the Magpies last year, with the Senegalese forced to endure some difficult days in front of goal. Thursday night's outing against Metalist Kharkiv was another one of those, with the striker seeing two goals chalked off in a contentious first leg of United's Europa League knock-out clash against the Ukrainian side. He has scored seven goals in 31 appearances this season - not a bad record, but not close to the soaring standards he set last term. Cissé still seems to be recovering his confidence from a difficult start to the year which also saw him moved around the frontline to accommodate former team-mate Demba Ba, who was in fantastic form before his January switch to Chelsea. United signalled their faith in the forward by ...

Goals from Alex Gilliead and Greg Olley kept Newcastle's hopes alive in the Torneo di Viareggio as they beat Congo's under-17 team in Strettoia. United had lost 2-1 to AC Milan in their opening group game but picked up three points on Thursday afternoon, with Gilliead opening the scoring in the 75th minute. He had joined the squad in Italy after returning from international duty with England under-17s in the Algarve Tournament and wasted no time in showing his worth as he headed home from Brandon Miele's corner. Congo levelled ten minutes later but blond bombshell Olley scored with virtually the last kick of the game with a goal which would have made the watching Peter Beardsley proud. Latest: Newcastle United and Ivory Coast midfielder Cheick Tiote has been arrested on suspicion of fraud. Media reports said Tiote, who only returned to England this month after playing for the Ivorians at the Africa Cup of Nations, had his car seized following his arrest. "At about 1.30pm on February 12, a car was stopped on Benton Park Road, Newcastle, and a 26- year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud in relation to driving offences," a Northumbria police spokesperson said on Wednesday. Any absence for the tough tackling Tiote will be a blow to Newcastle, who are 16th in the English Premier League, four points above the drop zone. Alan Pardew has revealed it would be impossible to get through a day as Newcastle United manger without being reminded of his main objective - to finally be the man who emulates Joe Harvey and brings a trophy to the cabinet at St James' Park. Pardew has revealed he'd love to fire the starting gun for the biggest party in decades on Tyneside - because those would be the scenes if he did deliver the Europa League trophy. Failure in the Europa League this season would mean 44 years of hurt in terms of silverware for the Geordie faithful. Some fans have given hope, some try to maintain realism in order to avoid disappointment - and then there are the romantics out there who refuse to give up the dream. Thankfully there are plenty of romantics behind the scenes at the club's Benton base too. Centre-back Steven Taylor has expressed his desperation to win a trophy with Newcastle United. Taylor has spent his entire 10-year career with the Magpies but has yet to claim a medal for his efforts. However, ahead of tomorrow's Europa League tie against Metalist Kharkiv, Taylor has confessed that he is keen to break his trophy duck in that tournament. "I am desperate to win something. Hopefully this could be it. People say we have been playing weakened teams, but we haven't. We have got great players and we have to try to do as well as we can in every match we play," the Northern Echo quotes the 27-year-old as saying. "There is more European experience in the squad now with the signings we made in January and we do have the young players that are good enough." Taylor has made a total of 220 appearances for Newcastle. Pete
Ibrox. The very name is thoroughly historic throughout football. While not the exact original ground for tragic reasons among others, the modern Ibrox Stadium, as primarily designed by legendary architect Archibald Leitch, is an iconic structure which fans revere and which has even attracted top class players to join the club. Rangers supporters hold their home dear and the very sight of that recently renamed Bill Struth Main Stand still sends shivers down the spine. Which is why the stadium sponsorship subject is such a sensitive one, and one which has been fiercely discussed for many years. With Mike Ashley and the mooted Sports Direct rebrand, there are clearly two camps in the debate; for and against. It is fair to say discussion had gone a tad quiet on the overall stadium deal front after it first broke at the tail-end of November. Speculation spread that Ashley's sports chain, which briefly renamed his own club Newcastle United's stadium the Sports Direct Arena, was going to become involved with sim ...
Wilfried Bony set to complete move to Russia. Newcastle United and West Ham are set to miss out on transfer target Wilfried Bony with the striker set to complete a big-money move to Russia. Vitesse Arnhem forward Bony is the Dutch Eredivisie’s top scorer having found the net 18 times already, and that form was what caught the eye of Newcastle United’s chief scout Graham Carr as well as West Ham boss Sam Allardyce. Source: Sportinglife He was initially targeted by Newcastle over a move in January, but his international commitments with the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations meant they put the interest on hold until the summer as they search for a long-term replacement for Demba Ba. West Ham, meanwhile, were linked with a £12million move in the summer with Andy Carroll not guaranteed to turn his season-long loan spell from Liverpool into a permanent deal, which the Hammers have first refusal on. And both Premier League clubs look likely to lose out with Bony expecting to make a move to Russia in ...

Paul Gascoigne nicknamed Gazza, is a former England international footballer. Playing as a midfielder, he began his professional career with local club Newcastle United in 1985. Alan Shearer (born 13 August 1970) is a retired English footballer. He played as a striker in the top level of English league football for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and for the England national team. He is considered by some as one of England's best strikers, being both Newcastle's and the Premier League's record goalscorer. After retiring as a player in 2006, Shearer worked as a television pundit for the BBC. In 2009 he briefly left his BBC role to become Newcastle United's manager in the last eight games of their 2008–09 season, in an unsuccessful attempt to save them from relegation. A native of Newcastle upon Tyne, Shearer made his professional debut with English top-flight club Southampton in 1988, scoring a hat-trick in the process.
Here's a poser with a bit of a difference.the answer to this one will be a number that corresponds to the name of a footballer. Sound complicated but it's not that bad. Start with the number of channels Bruce Springsteen had with nothing on. Then take away the number of ways Paul Simon had to leave your lover. Add the number of rooms of gloom the Four Tops had in the house of stone. Add the number of days a week The Beatles sang about. Add the number of steps Eddie Cochrane thought led to heaven. Add the number Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston thought it took. The number you should be left with is the squad number of which Newcastle United player? DEAD EASY!!!

Newcastle United return to European action this week and with the two-legged tie against Metalist Kharkiv comes a trip into the unknown. Literally.Alan Pardew’s knowledge of the team currently fourth in the Ukrainian league must be limited. They topped their qualifying group containing Bayer Leverkusen, Rosenborg and Rapid Vienna but haven’t played since December thanks to their winter break. Recent scouting missions have been limited to a friendly in Dubai and a run-out at Whitley Bay on Sunday night. But with a near-fully fit squad to turn to at last, and no FA Cup tie to pre-occupy minds and legs this weekend, the Newcastle manager will be hoping to name his strongest sides for both ties, taking full advantage of any Metalist fatigue as their season does not resume until after the second leg.

Peter Beardsley is one of the all time Newcastle United greats, in fact for many fans he is THE best ever Newcastle player. How though does Peter rate the current team and the French revolution that has arrived on Tyneside? ‘France Football’, which is the foremost football publication over the other side of the Channel, interviewed Peter Beardsley and found out he was a bit(!) of a fan of Yohan Cabaye. HOW WAS THE ARRIVAL OF THE MASSIVE FRENCH CONTINGENT ORGANISED? “Cabaye played an important role. He is a great guy as a player but also as a man. It was the trigger for everything. Of course, Graham Carr, who is responsible for overseeing our scouting in Ligue 1, did an outstanding job. He has a knack for finding players before others but what you need to stress about the French, is that besides being good technicians, they are also good guys who smile all the time.” WHY FRENCH? “Because they are better technically. In any case, superior to the English. The French have a technical education. From ...
Fraser Forster's authority boosts Celtic's belief in beating Juventus The goalkeeper went from strength to strength in the Europa League and is now shining in the Champions League Precisely three years ago Fraser Forster was preparing for a League One fixture at Brighton. The goalkeeper was on his third loan spell away from Newcastle United, this time at Norwich City, while doing little to douse suspicion that he was destined for a nomadic career. Stockport County and Bristol Rovers had been his earlier, temporary ports of call. By last November Forster had been dubbed La Gran Muralla – The Great Wall – by one Spanish newspaper in tribute to his exploits for Celtic during their famous 2-1 win against Barcelona. He was already, by then, a part of the England set-up. So when the 24-year-old Forster speaks about Celtic harbouring confidence that they can see off Juventus and progress to the Champions League's last eight, his opinion must be taken seriously. He is proof, after all, of football's capacity ...

Andre Villas-Boas was faced again with the inevitable inquisition over Bale’s long-term future after the winger’s two goals against Newcastle United in the 2-1 win on Saturday kept Spurs on course for a return to the Champions League. But just as Tottenham’s manager was beginning to tire of the latest barrage of questions about the 23-year-old, he found one he liked. Could Bale actually help the club attract better players to White Hart Lane? “It’s a great question,” Villas-Boas said. “People also move when they find other players are able to promote their own potential. Gareth has that effect.” New signing Lewis Holtby gave his best sales pitch to any players considering joining him in the same team as Bale. “He’s a world-class player and to play with him is a great feeling,” said Holtby. “I can’t speak for other players but I had a really good feeling about this club. This club is evolving every year, or maybe every month.” The sentiments almost could have been aimed directly ...

He is considered a traditional playmaker who could also play up front and score goals. Jong could be a replacement for Hatem Ben Arfa if he does infact plan to leave St.James’ Park this summer. Although he is not as skillful as Hatem, he scores more goals and is perhaps physically b ...
February saw an anniversary pass without much note. Believe it or not, it is 21 years ago that Kevin Keegan took the reins for his first game as manager of Newcastle United. To set the scene for those too young to recall, Newcastle United were in deep danger of going down and possibly going under. People think that clubs going to the wall is somehow a new thing. Well it is not. Newcastle were amidst a power struggle in the board room, with Sir John Hall and his Magpie group looking to gain control after claims of the club losing £600,000 per year. This sounds nothing in today’s terms compared to the likes of the debt carried by Man United and others. However, this was serious and should the worst happen and we were relegated to third tier, there was a possibility we would have lost the club. It’s unimaginable. NUFC were most definitely in turmoil on the pitch. Having the previous season lost in the play-off Semis – under The Bald Eagle Jim Smith, to none other than the unwashed mob from down the ro ...
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and his advisors have held meetings with Middle East group regarding full takeover of Early stages
about the yesterday game. Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their Barclays Premier League crown suffered a major setback as Roberto Mancini’s side were beaten 3-1 at Southampton. The Saints, who raced into a two-goal lead with goals inside the first 22 minutes from Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis, sealed their first victory under manager Mauricio Pochettino after Gareth Barry’s 48th-minute own goal restored the hosts' two-goal cushion, which had been halved by Edin Dzeko’s strike late on in the first half. The defeat leaves Man City nine points behind Manchester United, who will stretch their lead to 12 points if they beat Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea regained third place in the Barclays Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Wigan Athletic. Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United earlier in the day had taken them above their West London rivals, but Rafael Benitez’s side returned to third thanks to goals from Ramires, Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard and Marko Ma ...
Few people asking what Gouffran has done if it's not broken. I don't know. The Club have released the following statement Newcastle United are pleased to report that a precautionary X-ray has shown that Yoan Gouffran has not broken his right leg. The French forward was stretchered off during the second half of Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, and Gouffran will be further assessed on Sunday by the Club's medical staff.

ADEBAYOR'S QUICK RETURN TO LIFT SPURS Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor is racing to get back in time from the African Nations Cup with fellow forward Jermain Defoe ruled out for as long as three weeks for the striker-light club. Fourth-placed Spurs host improving Newcastle United in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff with Adebayor set to be thrown straight into the team even though he has still not left Africa after Togo were knocked out on Sunday. “We are trying to establish the best flight connections for him,” coach Andre Villas-Boas told reporters on Thursday. “He will be selected for sure.” Spurs fans were shocked the club failed to bring in another forward in the January transfer window after a raft of activity on deadline day in previous years. A move for Brazil’s Internacional forward Leandro Damaio hit the buffers to leave them with two recognised strikers and attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey, who managed 17 league goals for Fulham last term. Dempsey could well be je ...

Tottenham Hotspur - Newcastle United (Saturday 13:45) The biggest attraction of Saturday's Premier League program will undoubtedly audition between Tottenham and Newcastle. While the Spurs continue to reflect the attacks in fourth overall, and even more still attacking the third Chelsea French water resurrected Magpies have ambitions to climb the table, at €least in the top ten. Tottenham is the home ground is rather efficient, in addition, will now have to do without a court scorer Jermaine Defoe .. Thus - given the four-wheel *** inability to score with rivals so-called "over", in other words (in this case) put in one match more than one goal. No goalscoring feast I personally do not expect. And despite the fact that at least Magpies, energized triumphs over Aston Villa and Chelsea in recent weeks ahead operates more dangerous than ever this year. Three times, moreover, asserted itself against ManUtd, Arsenal also mentioned Blues - or equal to half the elite six. With Everton and ManCity it's not so . ...
