![]() Alan Pardew praised his Newcastle United side for 'winning ugly' as they launched another home fightback to see off Stoke on Sunday. The Magpies fell behind midway through the second half to a Jonathan Walters penalty, but Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse were on target for the hosts at St. James' Park to turn the Premier League fixture on its head and secure maximum points. United have been through similar scenarios in their previous two Tyneside league games - against Chelsea and Southampton - with identical victorious outcomes. And manager Pardew believes they yet again ground out the win on a difficult afternoon. "It was a tough game," "Stoke are really tough opposition, our fans are intelligent enough to know that. They defended deep, got bodies behind the ball, made us make mistake and we looked ugly. "But that's what they are good at, and they are always a threat, so to win it was a massive bonus for us. "We were quicker in the second half from set-plays - our throw-ins, goal-kicks and free-kicks. "We ...

![]() An afternoon dominated by snow, swirling wind, set-pieces and another stellar defensive display from Newcastle United's Steven Taylor was decided by Papiss Cissé's stoppage-time winner. Cissé had spent much of the afternoon being caught offside but there was no flag as he met Sylvain Marveaux's pass before easing Newcastle's lingering relegation worries by half-volleying the ball beyond Asmir Begovic in front of the Gallowgate End. Kicking off in a snowstorm, Newcastle could have been forgiven for believing they were still in Russia. Alan Pardew had made seven changes to his starting line-up as he refreshed his side following Thursday's impressive 0-0 Europa League first-leg draw against Anzhi Makhachkala in Moscow. The bad news for St James' Park regulars was that Hatem Ben Arfa was injured again and did not even make the bench.

![]() A crucial match against Stoke today and the points are still to be put on the board – but what a great undercurrent in the preparations for today’s match, from the Newcastle United perspective of course. United’s position in the Premier League table might not have changed radically (yet…) but the transformation in hopes and expectations, in just over a month, has been remarkable. I don’t think many fans had any great expectations for the Europa League having seen the embarrassing display at Brighton in the FA Cup. It wasn’t an embarrassment getting beat by the south coast team because after all they are just one division below Newcastle, what was a total disgrace though was the performance of a team who after all were supposedly first team squad players. It looked as though United were not going to risk first team players in cup competitions and that the squad players coming in were clearly not going to get us anywhere once we played the better European teams in the competition. However, we ha ...

![]() We might not have learnt much about the opposition but we saw a very disciplined and assertive performance from Newcastle United that bodes well for the short and long-term. A shocking surface meant that Alan Pardew generally went for players with a lower centre of gravity who could turn and twist on the frozen artificial pitch. A great display with for me the likes of Mapou, Cabaye and Sissoko taking the honours, all three prepared to take responsibility and keep the ball when the tendency was to get rid as soon as possible. Newcastle will no doubt facing a better Anzhi side at St.James’ Park but the Russians will see a lot more of Alan Pardew’s big hitters in the return leg. United became the first team to take a point from Anzhi at ‘home’ and also the first visitors to keep a clean sheet, Liverpool one of those defeated earlier in the campaign. This is a great result and must make Newcastle favourites to go through, Howay The Lads! (Bell)

![]() Newcastle United have been ordered by boss Alan Pardew to adopt an attacking mentality in their Europa League match against Anzhi Makhachkala. The Magpies boss believes that his side can win the trophy, and will send his troops out to gain an important away goal foothold, before heading back to St James’s to finish off their opposition. Tough opposition Anzhi will be the strongest team that the Toon Army will have faced all season in the competition, and Guus Hiddink’s big-spending side will be a tough nut to crack in their quest for European glory. Pardew was reported by the Independent as saying: “When you get to this stage, all the clubs have a chance. “You need some luck, but you need a good technical game and you need to have the right mentality in the group. Our mentality is strong.” Stretched squad Newcastle will face a tough task leaving Russia with an advantage, as they will be without at least six first team players. ![]() Torres has scored just 14 Premier League goals since his British transfer record switch from Liverpool and the report says Chelsea may finally be ready to add further competition for the centre-forward role. It also claims Blues owner Roman Abramovich will sanction the move for Gomez, despite having just signed Demba Ba from Newcastle United in January. Gomez scored 41 goals for Bayern last season playing in a similar role to the centre-forwards at Chelsea. However, this impressive record couldn’t save him from the axe this season and he has played second fiddle to summer signing Mario Mandzukic. The report says incoming boss Pep Guardiola is unlikely to see a future for the 27-year-old striker and he could be available in the summer. Chelsea will have to be prepared to dig deep if they want to sign Gomez this summer, as he reportedly has a price tag in the region of £36million.

But the French midfielder would have swapped the captain's armband for all three points at the Liberty Stadium. A late striker from Swans substitute Luke Moore condemned the Magpies to only their second defeat in seven games, but it could have been very different had the visitors taken some of the numerous chances which came their way during the second half in South Wales. One of those fell to Cabaye, who saw his stunning long-range effort tipped onto the crossbar by home keeper Michel Vorm, and that would have put the seal on a memorable day for the former Lille man. Named United skipper in the absence of the injured Fabricio Coloccini , Cabaye admits the role is something relatively new, but relished every minute - apart from the result. "It means a lot ...

"If he plays against Cardiff he'll be nervous I'm sure, trying to make an impression on a new set of supporters, but he undoubtedly has the assets to make an impression." Mowbray has compared 6ft 4ins Ameobi to Muzzy Carayol, who recently returned to the first team squad after a long lay-off with a serious knee injury. Clemo

This week, while Swansea City have been celebrating their Capital One Cup win, the only focus at the club's Benton base has been taking three points from the Europe-bound Jacks - not to mention the realisation that there is more than just fending off relegation on the agenda for the Magpies. The Geordie assistant manager is well aware that expectations on Tyneside can spiral out of control both ways at St James' Park. And having worked with Sir Bobby Robson during an era when the iconic ex-England boss encouraged his players to have 'wild dreams', not to mention assisting Alan Pardew during the highest finish since the days of the Geordie Godfather, he knows how the good times can roll. Now though the duo are united at Newcastle, and with Coloccini sweating on a back injury sustained in the 4-2 win over Southampton, Yanga-Mbiwa is poised for his first start in the Premier League. Young understudy Jak Alnwick could therefore be set for a place on the bench against the Saints. United confirmed that Krul would miss the game and now faces further assessment on Monday. Former Charlton Athletic stopper Elliot comes into contention due to Krul's nasty ankle injury, sustained during the Europa League win over Metalist Kharkiv. Rangers supporters hold their home dear and the very sight of that recently renamed Bill Struth Main Stand still sends shivers down the spine. Which is why the stadium sponsorship subject is such a sensitive one, and one which has been fiercely discussed for many years. Recent scouting missions have been limited to a friendly in Dubai and a run-out at Whitley Bay on Sunday night. But with a near-fully fit squad to turn to at last, and no FA Cup tie to pre-occupy minds and legs this weekend, the Newcastle manager will be hoping to name his strongest sides for both ties, taking full advantage of any Metalist fatigue as their season does not resume until after the second leg.

![]() Peter Beardsley is one of the all time Newcastle United greats, in fact for many fans he is THE best ever Newcastle player. How though does Peter rate the current team and the French revolution that has arrived on Tyneside? ‘France Football’, which is the foremost football publication over the other side of the Channel, interviewed Peter Beardsley and found out he was a bit(!) of a fan of Yohan Cabaye. HOW WAS THE ARRIVAL OF THE MASSIVE FRENCH CONTINGENT ORGANISED? “Cabaye played an important role. He is a great guy as a player but also as a man. It was the trigger for everything. Of course, Graham Carr, who is responsible for overseeing our scouting in Ligue 1, did an outstanding job. He has a knack for finding players before others but what you need to stress about the French, is that besides being good technicians, they are also good guys who smile all the time.” WHY FRENCH? “Because they are better technically. In any case, superior to the English. The French have a technical education. From ...
![]() Fraser Forster's authority boosts Celtic's belief in beating Juventus The goalkeeper went from strength to strength in the Europa League and is now shining in the Champions League Precisely three years ago Fraser Forster was preparing for a League One fixture at Brighton. The goalkeeper was on his third loan spell away from Newcastle United, this time at Norwich City, while doing little to douse suspicion that he was destined for a nomadic career. Stockport County and Bristol Rovers had been his earlier, temporary ports of call. By last November Forster had been dubbed La Gran Muralla – The Great Wall – by one Spanish newspaper in tribute to his exploits for Celtic during their famous 2-1 win against Barcelona. He was already, by then, a part of the England set-up. So when the 24-year-old Forster speaks about Celtic harbouring confidence that they can see off Juventus and progress to the Champions League's last eight, his opinion must be taken seriously. He is proof, after all, of football's capacity ...

![]() Andre Villas-Boas was faced again with the inevitable inquisition over Bale’s long-term future after the winger’s two goals against Newcastle United in the 2-1 win on Saturday kept Spurs on course for a return to the Champions League. But just as Tottenham’s manager was beginning to tire of the latest barrage of questions about the 23-year-old, he found one he liked. Could Bale actually help the club attract better players to White Hart Lane? “It’s a great question,” Villas-Boas said. “People also move when they find other players are able to promote their own potential. Gareth has that effect.” New signing Lewis Holtby gave his best sales pitch to any players considering joining him in the same team as Bale. “He’s a world-class player and to play with him is a great feeling,” said Holtby. “I can’t speak for other players but I had a really good feeling about this club. This club is evolving every year, or maybe every month.” The sentiments almost could have been aimed directly ...
![]() Newcastle daily The Journal is reporting that Alan Pardew appears to be looking to Holland for emerging talent. A group of team scouts are said to have attended the Dutch U-21 team take on Ireland on Wednesday. Scouts are also expected to attend some Eredivisie matches that involve clubs Vitesse Arnhem, PSV Eindhoven, Zwolle and AZ Alkmaar this weekend. The club who has developed a reputation for favouring players from the French league could be switching their focus to the Eredivisie going forward. Here are five potential transfer targets for Newcastle United from Holland. Siem de Jong, AFC Ajax, Midfielder/Forward The Magpies were heavily linked to the 24-year-old attacking midfielder during last month’s transfer window. He is considered a traditional playmaker who could also play up front and score goals. Jong could be a replacement for Hatem Ben Arfa if he does infact plan to leave St.James’ Park this summer. Although he is not as skillful as Hatem, he scores more goals and is perhaps physically b ...
![]() February saw an anniversary pass without much note. Believe it or not, it is 21 years ago that Kevin Keegan took the reins for his first game as manager of Newcastle United. To set the scene for those too young to recall, Newcastle United were in deep danger of going down and possibly going under. People think that clubs going to the wall is somehow a new thing. Well it is not. Newcastle were amidst a power struggle in the board room, with Sir John Hall and his Magpie group looking to gain control after claims of the club losing £600,000 per year. This sounds nothing in today’s terms compared to the likes of the debt carried by Man United and others. However, this was serious and should the worst happen and we were relegated to third tier, there was a possibility we would have lost the club. It’s unimaginable. NUFC were most definitely in turmoil on the pitch. Having the previous season lost in the play-off Semis – under The Bald Eagle Jim Smith, to none other than the unwashed mob from down the ro ...

![]() about the yesterday game. Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their Barclays Premier League crown suffered a major setback as Roberto Mancini’s side were beaten 3-1 at Southampton. The Saints, who raced into a two-goal lead with goals inside the first 22 minutes from Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis, sealed their first victory under manager Mauricio Pochettino after Gareth Barry’s 48th-minute own goal restored the hosts' two-goal cushion, which had been halved by Edin Dzeko’s strike late on in the first half. The defeat leaves Man City nine points behind Manchester United, who will stretch their lead to 12 points if they beat Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea regained third place in the Barclays Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Wigan Athletic. Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United earlier in the day had taken them above their West London rivals, but Rafael Benitez’s side returned to third thanks to goals from Ramires, Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard and Marko Ma ...

![]() ADEBAYOR'S QUICK RETURN TO LIFT SPURS Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor is racing to get back in time from the African Nations Cup with fellow forward Jermain Defoe ruled out for as long as three weeks for the striker-light club. Fourth-placed Spurs host improving Newcastle United in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff with Adebayor set to be thrown straight into the team even though he has still not left Africa after Togo were knocked out on Sunday. “We are trying to establish the best flight connections for him,” coach Andre Villas-Boas told reporters on Thursday. “He will be selected for sure.” Spurs fans were shocked the club failed to bring in another forward in the January transfer window after a raft of activity on deadline day in previous years. A move for Brazil’s Internacional forward Leandro Damaio hit the buffers to leave them with two recognised strikers and attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey, who managed 17 league goals for Fulham last term. Dempsey could well be je ...

![]() Tottenham Hotspur - Newcastle United (Saturday 13:45) The biggest attraction of Saturday's Premier League program will undoubtedly audition between Tottenham and Newcastle. While the Spurs continue to reflect the attacks in fourth overall, and even more still attacking the third Chelsea French water resurrected Magpies have ambitions to climb the table, at €least in the top ten. Tottenham is the home ground is rather efficient, in addition, will now have to do without a court scorer Jermaine Defoe .. Thus - given the four-wheel *** inability to score with rivals so-called "over", in other words (in this case) put in one match more than one goal. No goalscoring feast I personally do not expect. And despite the fact that at least Magpies, energized triumphs over Aston Villa and Chelsea in recent weeks ahead operates more dangerous than ever this year. Three times, moreover, asserted itself against ManUtd, Arsenal also mentioned Blues - or equal to half the elite six. With Everton and ManCity it's not so . ...
