But the record was set by Sri Lanka, in the course of making the Test-record total of 952 for 6 dec against India in Colombo in 1997: their batsmen struck 109 fours and two sixes, or 448 in boundaries. Born in Delhi, Virat Kohli shot into prominence as the under 19 skipper who led India to victory at the 2008 World Cup held in Malaysia. That accolade gained him instant recognition and made him an overnight teen sensation. Soon he made his ODI debut for India in Sri Lanka in August 2008 when he was thrust into the opener's role as both Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were ruled out due to injuries. He played two important knocks - 37 in the 2nd ODI and 54 in the 4th - both of which resulted in India winning, thereby enabling them to win the series as well. After such an impressive showing, he was slightly unlucky to remain on the bench when England visited India in December 2008, but since Tendulkar and Sehwag had returned and the middle-order was strong and packed, Kohli did not make the starting eleven. Kohli, however, was not disappointed and he went back to the domestic scene and continued to plunder attacks playing for Delhi. When India went to Australia to compete in the 2009 Emerging Players ...

A treasure map, assassination plot & kidnapping among dark secrets of SL asylum seekers The 12-metre fishing vessel called the Sithumina left Batticaloa on Sri Lanka's east coast at 2.30am on June 12th. The 41 passengers on board had met the ship several hundred metres from the beach after being ferried there in two small boats powered by outboard motors. Most of the passengers were men who have since freely admitted that they were simply looking for new jobs and a better life in safe and far away New Zealand. After only 14 days at sea they were picked up by the Royal Australian Navy. On Monday, all 41 passengers were returned by the Australian government to Sri Lanka. A destination where Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said this week, in the capital Colombo, he had no concerns about their safety or wellbeing. But not everyone on board the Sithumina was just looking for work. Some of the families on board were carrying some dark secrets and now believe their lives are in danger. In an attempt to bring ...

Proteas SA must get Philander firing 2014-06-27 12:18 Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer Cape Town – The Proteas need to waste little time getting Vernon Philander, a staple member of their seam attack, into his bowling groove for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka. The Cape Cobras all-rounder, who turned 29 earlier this week, has a big disadvantage against regular scalp-hunting colleagues Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in that he will have had almost four months of inactivity by the time the tour-proper begins with the three-match one-day international portion next Sunday. Fortunately he is part of the ODI squad – leaving our shores this weekend – so there are dual reasons for involving him as quickly as possible. One is that, with the 2015 World Cup in mind, he deserves further opportunities to try to nail down a regular spot in the limited-overs mix: Philander has earned 13 caps at ODI level, yet spread over a period of some six years between 2007 and 2013. But the Proteas would be well advised to simu ...
"Sri Lanka, with this win, have now won seven Test matches outside the subcontinent, excluding Tests in Zimbabwe. The margin of victory in this Test - 100 runs - is the narrowest in terms of runs for Sri Lanka in these countries. They have won five Tests by larger margins and another by 10 wickets. Three of these seven wins have come in England, two in New Zealand and one each in South Africa and West Indies. These seven wins have come in 57 Tests, which makes their win percentage 12.3%. India and Pakistan, the other subcontinental giants, have win percentages of 12.4% (22 wins in 177 Tests) and 21.4% (31 wins in 145 Tests) respectively in these conditions. The overall records of India and Sri Lanka, in terms of win percentages, are now quite similar." Cricinfo

England v Sri Lanka, 2nd Investec Test, Headingley Poor form makes Cook sweat George Dobell in Leeds June 19, 2014 At the ground where Kevin Pietersen once remarked that "it isn't easy being me" it has started to look a bit difficult to be Alastair Cook. The England Captain built his reputation on his ability to remain calm under pressure. He was the man to whom England threw the ball in the field when they were trying to make it reverse swing: so little did he sweat that they knew it would remain dry. But, without a win in seven Tests, without a century in 11 Tests and 13 months and on the receiving end of some caustic words from high-profiles critics and Cook looked as if he was, metaphorically at least, starting to sweat in Leeds. You can understand why Cook would be frustrated. Less than a year ago, he concluded his first year as Test captain with an Ashes win to follow a Test series victory away in India. His century against New Zealand was his 25th in Tests, which meant that, at the age of 28, he ha ...

India has become the number-one ranked Twenty20 International (T20I) side after the annual update of the Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings, which was announced on Thursday.   India has swapped places with ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 champion Sri Lanka.   In the past 12 months, India has lost just one T20I (against Sri Lanka in the recent ICC WT20 Final in Bangladesh), while Sri Lanka has lost four matches. The 2013-2014 results are weighted at 100 per cent whereas, the results in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 are now weighted at 50 per cent. Therefore, Sri Lanka’s strong performances in those two earlier years now count for less.    In the other major change, the West Indies has slipped two places. This drop has moved Australia and New Zealand up by one place each.   The updated table now reflects all T20I matches completed after 1 August 2011. All T20I matches played until the start of May 2015 will be added to this table, so that by May 2015, the ratings will be based on just under four years of r ...

Playing his first match of the tournament proper, the spinner remarkably claimed five wickets for three runs as New Zealand managed only 60 in 15.3 overs. With the victory, Sri Lanka joined South Africa in the last four from Group One. New Zealand began their chase one batsman short after all-rounder Corey Anderson dislocated a finger trying to take a catch. Herath took four wickets in his first three overs to leave the Kiwis reeling at 29 for five in the eighth over. Kane Williams (42), the only Kiwi batsman to manage double digits, tried his best to offer some resistance but could not stop New Zealand from folding for their lowest total in 20-over cricket. In the Super-10 stage, Asian giants Pakistan and India will be joined in Group Two by the West Indies, Australia and one of the successful qualifiers. The other qualifier will join South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand in Group One with two sides from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The identity of the two qualifiers from round one will be known just hours before Pakistan bid to defeat arch rivals India for the first time at the World Twenty20. Indian team Captain M.S. Dhoni, who has recently been under fire for the abysmal performance of India against New Zealand, has now been ruled out of playing the Asia Cup tournament due to a side-strain injury that he received in the second Test match against New Zealand recently. The team will now be led by Viral Kohli, the deputy captain. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel spoke to reporters about the decision, and added that MS Dhoni will be undergoing ten days of rehabilitation. In the statement, he has also affirmed that the All-India Senior Selection Committee has chosen Dinesh as Dhoni’s replacement as wicket-keeper in the team. Kohli has stood out in the team as a top batsman, and he has made an impression on all rival teams in international venues with his performance. India will now face their old nemesis Pakistan, along with Bangaldesh, Sri Lanka and the debuting Afghanistan team in the Asia Cup tournament that will begin on February 25, with the finals being played on March 8. India’s first match ...
A punishment that should have come earlier Shakib Al Hasan has had discipline issues in the past, and had he been pulled up earlier this latest incident may not have occurred Less than 24 hours after his dressing-room misdemeanor, Shakib Al Hasan left the Shere Bangla National Stadium with a three-ODI ban and a heavy fine. The punishment may seem disproportionate to this particular crime, but it is a fair verdict for a man who has enjoyed lots of leeway as Bangladesh's No. 1 cricketer. Shakib's inappropriate gesture during the second ODI against Sri Lanka was the big incident waiting to happen, after several smaller ones over nearly four years were overlooked by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Shakib's first public outburst was in October 2010 but the incident was buried under his match-winning performance on that day, and the bigger picture was missed. He was on 92 in the fourth ODI against New Zealand when there was movement near the sightscreen that the umpires could not stop. After a few minutes Shakib, ...
SO INDIA WILL NOW COMPLETE 1000 DAYS WITHOUT WINNING A TEST ABROAD. Plenty of records achieved during the 2nd test between India and New Zealand :- 1. Brendon McCullum becomes the 1st NZ batsman to sore a Triple ton, going past 299 by Martin Crowe on the same ground vs Sri Lanka . 2. Jimmy Neesham becomes only the 7th No.8 batsman to score a century on Test debut . 3.B.McCullum and BJ Watling put togther 352 runs for the 6th wicket, going past M.Jayawardane and P.Jayawardane's (former)record of 351 . Kohli's dropped catch of McCullum proved to be one of the costliest miss in the history of the game ; it cost India 290 extra runs of McCullum plus those scored by his partners . So I don't think a century is gonna make for that is it ??? Still Kohli's batting comes through along with Shikhar Dhawan, who managed to play wonderfully . Also Well played to RR and Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane . ;) Since India last won a test match overseas: 1.India have conceded 400+ runs in at least one innings in the last 11 . ...
on February 12 in cricket history 1949 A cricketing gentleman is born. India's Gundappa Viswanath was as renowned for his sportsmanship - he cost India the Golden Jubilee Test when he recalled Bob Taylor - as he was for his lightning wrists and pure, impish strokeplay. From 91 Tests he made over 6000 runs at an average of 41. And his runs were usually influential: he averaged 53 against West Indies, and 51 in Tests India didn't lose, as against 26 in those they did. 1961 A day for young centurions. Before that, the nearest anyone got to breaking Mushtaq's record was... 1990 ... 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar, who came within 12 runs of becoming the youngest person to make a Test hundred when he was out to New Zealand's Danny Morrison in the second Test in Napier. Chennai. . . Immediately after MS Dhoni became the Indian captain with worst away test loss record with 11 overseas defeats to his credit, N Srinivasan BCCI in a damage control exercise called an urgent meeting in the city. In the meeting it was unanimously decided by BCCI president N Srinivasan that they would be purchasing entire New Zealand and Sri Lanka. . . This move is aimed at reducing the number loses under Dhoni’s captaincy abroad. With Sri Llanka and New Zealand both in BCCI fold and thus under India, Indian team’s loses under Dhoni would go down to 9 and he would no longer hold the dubious record. This way the record would be safe till India’s next overseas test series against English team in July this year. However by then BCCI is confident of purchasing even England. BCCI has also rubbished claims of it doing this to shield Dhoni who also captains CSK team owned by Srinivasan. “This is an important move to keep the spirit of the game as well as test matches alive. To begin with we are ...

U-19 World Cup 2000 - Sri Lanka Teams: 16 Matches: 54 Winner: India Runner-up: Sri Lanka The Indians were the only unbeaten side and its dominance came from formidable batting. Captained by Mohammad Kaif, openers Ravneet Singh and Manish Sharma impressed with three century partnerships but it was the powerful and wristy left-hander Yuvraj Singh who really stole the headlines. Yuvraj thrashed 203 runs in the tournament from just 196 balls faced including 58 from only 25 balls against Australia in the semi-final. It was the prelude to a stunning introduction to the senior India team later in the year when he hammered 84 from 80 balls against Australia in the ICC Knock-out in Kenya. As if his form with the bat was not enough, he also bowled some handy left-arm spin in Sri Lanka taking 4-36 against New Zealand and 4-15 against Nepal.

Transparency International ranks 177 countries in its annual "Corruption Perceptions Index" and New Zealand scored top marks as one of the "cleanest" countries at No 1 while Australia is at No 9 with Canada. Any guesses about Sri Lanka in the South Asian region which has set some records? Cultural triumphalism that lacks self-criticism with blame always projected to outside sources, aggressive nationalism that blunts the moral conscience can hide some harsh realities that are treated like the proverbial elephant in the room .

Test match - Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Meeting after March 2013 at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, standing front of Sri Langka today's Bangladesh is a more matured country because of some facts. Certainly looks Bangladesh has a balanced bowling and batting side and their recent team performance which evidence that more efficiency have to make a good contest. Why this is? This is because of in response of Sri Langka's 570/4dec runs Bangladesh did 638 runs later year. Near the day Bangladesh beat New Zealand ferociously in international matches and made a ruthless ending. Moreover for Bangladesh this test series isn't so fair enough because of unwillingness in world cricket 3 most powerful rich cricket boards India-Australia-England tussled wants of 8 test playing nations theory. If really that would be this may be the last contest for Bangladesh in any international test series. Standing in ranking number 9 country Bangladesh is going to down for the contest in Mirpur on today's morning against Sri Lanka. ...

We will be among the ten Test playing nations. But our Test rating point is 18, so to reach No. 8 ranking [under the current system], we will need more than a decade. We are not getting enough opportunities. Zimbabwe has 34 rating points, so I don't know who we can beat to cover the difference. "We have improved as a side in the last 18 months. We have played well against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and West Indies. But such performances haven't reflected on our ranking. The first ODI was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When the first three days of the third Test were washed out officials decided to abandon the match and, instead, play a one-off one day game consisting of 40 eight-ball overs per side. Australia won the game by 5 wickets. ODIs were played in white kits with a red ball. The ten Test-playing nations (which are also the ten full members of the ICC) have permanent ODI status. The nations are listed below with the date of each nation's ODI debut shown in brackets: 1)Australia (5 January 1971) 2)England (5 January 1971) 3)New Zealand (11 February 1973) 4)Pakistan (11 February 1973) 5)West Indies (5 September 1973) 6)India (13 July 1974) 7)Sri Lanka (13 February 1982) 8)South Africa (10 November 1991) 9)Zimbabwe (25 October 1992) 10)Bangladesh (10 October 1997)
Pakistan's Shahid Afridi is arguably one of the most loved and followed cricketers in Pakistan. Afridi came to the limelight after scoring the fastest one-day international century (102 off 37 balls) against Sri Lanka in Nairobi on October 4th 1996, a record that is yet to be surpassed (and one that may never be). Here is list of the records held by Shahid Afridi. Fastest Century: In his second One-day International, and his very first innings, Shahid Afridi walked in with Waqar Younis' bat [gifted to Waqar by Sachin Tendulkar], and blasted the then World Champions, Sri Lanka for the fastest ever 100 in one-day International cricket. His destructive innings brought up three figures in just 37 balls. Afridi also holds the record for the 4th (100 of 45 deliveries) and 7th(100 of 53 deliveries) fastest hundreds which he smashed against India and Bangladesh respectively. New Zealand's Corey Anderson broke Afridi's 17 year old record of smashing the fastest ton by scoring his ton in just 36 balls, on January I ...
MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan explains what happened to her in Sri Lanka: "I recently arrived in Sri Lanka to visit my extended family and visit the places that were once home for me, during the earlier stages of my life and the civil war in Sri Lanka; but was subject to political intimidation. I was warned I could be subject to arrest and deportation, as several commonwealth MPs from New Zealand and Australia recently faced. I have received word from the Canadian High Commission in Colombo that the Sri Lankan authorities have confirmed that their previous claims of an arrest warrant in my name does not exist and I now look forward to exploring and learning more about the country of my birth." In a statement, Sitsabaiesan says her experiences since she arrived in Sri Lanka are a reminder "that defending principles of Human Rights is not easy, but I continue to believe that it is only through open dialogue and freedom of expression that people can ultimately achieve healing and reconciliation."
Corey Anderson came up with a superlative effort with the bat as he surpassed Shahid Afridi to register the fastest ton in ODI cricket. The left-handed all-rounder, who scored an unbeaten 131 off just 47 balls in the third ODI against West Indies which was reduced to 21 overs a side, got to the three figure mark in 36 balls, one less than what Afridi had taken in the game against Sri Lanka in 1996. # Anderson's hundred is also the fastest in all forms of international cricket, with the Test record being the 56-ball hundred by Viv Richards against England in 1986 and the T20I record being the 45-ball ton by Richard Levi against New Zealand in 2012. # In scoring a 36-ball ton, Anderson went past Craig Mcmillan, who had scored the previous fastest by a New Zealand batsman when he had reached the triple figures off 67 balls against Australia in 2007. # As far as List A cricket is concerned, Anderson's ton was on par with that of Graham Rose who scored a ton in the Somerset v Devon match in 1990. # Anderson, w ...
ODI STATISTICAL REVIEW for 2013 Australia enjoyed a reasonably successful 2013 in ODI cricket, despite being unable to defend its ICC Champion’s Trophy crown in England earlier in the year. Across 26 matches, Australia managed 12 wins, 8 losses, and was involved in 6 no results/ abandonments. The 2013 ODI saga began with five ODI’s against Sri Lanka, with the series being drawn two wins a piece (with one no result). Next, a 5-0 whitewash of the West Indies to finish off a successful home summer. After that was the unsuccessful Champion’s Trophy campaign, losses to England and Sri Lanka, as well as a no result against New Zealand, saw the defending champions kicked out in the group stage. Then, after an unsuccessful Ashes campaign, Australian bounced back by first thumping Scotland, then winning two matches against England, playing out two no results and losing one, to claim a series win. Then the most recent seven-match ODI series against India, on the highways of pitches and small grounds, the Indi ...
No day off for resurgent Black Caps While most of us were tucking into Christmas pud today, Black Caps all-rounder Nathan Mccullum was laying the foundations for what he hopes will be a continuation of his team’s summer of redemption. Fresh from their Test series success over the West Indies, the New Zealand team must now regroup – with different personnel – for the limited-overs versions of cricket, beginning with the 50-over one-day encounter at Eden Park tomorrow. McCullum, who played no part in the five-day victory, insists the ODI group is still buoyed by recent results. “Everyone’s riding high at the moment,” he says. “The Test boys did fantastically well in the last few weeks and have come off a couple of good results. “And all the one-day guys have been scoring runs and taking wickets in first-class cricket as well. “The environment is going pretty well and we have a lot of confidence, and obviously with the previous series in Sri Lanka as well, things are going pretty well. “W ...

Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene won his second ICC Spirit of Cricket award, this time for walking without waiting for an umpire's decision when batting on 91 against New Zealand in Galle on November 2012.
A strong fast bowler who hits the bat hard, James Pattinson will be one of Australia's players to watch over the next few years, a fact he demonstrated emphatically by taking a five-for on Test debut. The national selectors certainly thought highly of his talent when they thrust him into a Cricket Australia contract in 2011 and then picked him for the Test tour of Sri Lanka when he had only six first-class matches to his name. But it was in one-day cricket that he had shown his early potential. In 2009-10 he swung the ball impressively during a match against New South Wales, his 6 for 48 the best figures ever by a Victorian in a domestic one-day game, breaking Graeme Watson's 40-year-old record. The younger brother of Darren Pattinson, who played a Test for England in 2008, James honed his skills against his much older sibling in the backyard of their Melbourne home. Unlike the English-born Darren, James has only an Australian passport, having been born in Victoria after the family migrated. He made ODI d ...

Letter to indian team Dear Men in Blue: I know the past few days have been terrible for you. The fans were circumspect about this tour even before you boarded the flight to South Africa; and when their fears came true, the nails and teeth have come out to rip you apart. If the defeats have hurt you badly, the mindless sarcasm has not done you any better. Of course, there is a reason to feel dejected. There is, however, no reason to feel demoralised. Over the years, the South African fast bowling unit has turned into a relentless, unstoppable behemoth that has been crushing every opposition, especially at home. Over the past two years they have managed to bowl out Sri Lanka for 43, New Zealand for 45, and Pakistan for 49 — all in the longest version of the sport. There is, thus, nothing to be ashamed of the result. There is nothing disgraceful in not being able to stand against Dale Steyn. Steyn is one of the greatest fast bowlers the world has seen in the last 25 years, and at times he becomes almost un ...

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga feels India might find it difficult to defend their World Cup title in 2015, scheduled in Australia and New Zealand, due to the team's weak bowling resources.
I see there has been a bit of confusion pertaining next year ICC T20 World Cup - fair enough confusion is part of cricket these days. I will try to simplify it now, The men's World Cup (By the way they run concurently with the ladies'), So the men's World Cup consists of 16 teams, get that one right - 16 teams. Automatic qualification for the Test playing nations- West Indies, India, Bangladesh, Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Then there is the 6 teams from the associates that played the qualifiers (The final which is on today) - Ireland, Afganistan, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Nepal and United Arab Emirates. So in total we have 16 teams already qualified for the World Cup. So how it will work out... (The confusion part) There is the first round (Please note its not a qualifier to the World Cup, its already the World Cup). The 1st round will have the 2 'strongest' Test playing nations (Zimbabwe and Bangladesh) and the 6 associate teams that played qualifiers. B ...

Ads Not by This Site List of Test Cricket triple centuries From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Australian Donald Bradman is one of only four players in Test Cricket to have scored 300 or more runs in a single inningson more than one occasion. The others areBrian Lara and Chris Gayle of the West Indies and Virender Sehwag of India. A triple century (an individual score of 300 or more) in Test Cricket has been scored on 26 occasions by 22 different batsmen from seven of the ten Test-cricket playing nations.[1] No player from Bangladesh, New Zealand or Zimbabwe has scored 300, although Martin Crowe of New Zealand was dismissed for 299 in a match against Sri Lanka in 1991.[1] The First Test triple century was achieved by Andy Sandham of England against the West Indies in 1930 in the First Test series hosted in the West Indies.[2] The most recent Test triple century was made by Hashim Amla in the England vs. South Africa test match at the Oval from 19–23 July 2012. SL call on Vithanage and Seekkuge Prasanna Sri Lanka have included batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage and legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna in their ODI squad for the series against Pakistan in the UAE in December. Vithanage was a replacement for Mahela Jayawardene, who asked not to be considered, as his wife is expecting their first child in December. Prasanna, meanwhile, came in for Ajantha Mendis, who was dropped from the squad despite not playing an ODI in the recent series against New Zealand. Prasanna last played an ODI for Sri Lanka in March 2012, against Pakistan during the Asia Cup in Dhaka. Vithanage is yet to play a limited-overs international for Sri Lanka, but had played in the home Test series against Bangladesh in March.
Bangladesh-SL Tests from January 27 Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh, which was scheduled for February 2014, has been advanced by a few days to allow the Asia Cup to kick off on February 24. Bangladesh will now host Sri Lanka for two Tests starting on January 27, a week after Sri Lanka's Test series against Pakistan in the UAE concludes. The teams will also play two Twenty20s and three ODIs during the series, which ends on February 22, two days before the Asia Cup begins in Bangladesh. Mirpur and Chittagong will get a Test each, while the teams will also travel to Sylhet for the limited-overs games. The ODI in Sylhet, on February 17, will provide the BCB an opportunity to check how match-fit the ground is. The Twenty20 scheduled between Bangladesh and New Zealand here in November 2013 was shifted out, with the BCB scrambling to meet the ICC's deadline of November 30 to have the stadium fully ready for the World Twenty20. The Sri Lanka ODI will be the first international game at the venue since its completio ...

Sri Lanka must win one match in the T20 series against New Zealand to retain no1 T20 International
Pakistan can still become the number one team in ICC T20i Ranking if: 1) they beats South Africa 2-0 & 2) New Zealand beats Sri Lanka 2-0.
When the Imperial Cricket Conference (as it was originally called) was founded in 1909, only England, Australia and South Africa were members. India , West Indies and New Zealand became Test nations before the Second World War and Pakistan soon afterwards. The international game grew with several "affiliate nations" getting involved and, in the closing years of the 20th century, three of those became Test nations also: Sri Lanka , Zimbabwe and Bangladesh . Test Cricket remained the sport's highest level of standard throughout the 20th century but it had its problems, notably in the infamous "Bodyline Series" of 1932–33 when Douglas Jardine's England used so- called "leg theory" to try and neutralise the run-scoring brilliance of Australia's Don Bradman. It surprises me that Commonwealth Leaders like Stephen Harper, of Canada, and David Cameron, of the United Kingdom, Manmohan Singh, of India, and John Key, of New Zealand, can be critical of the Human Rights record of Sri Lanka which has just come out of a bloody civil war, when they are either fighting civil wars (Kashmir in India) without adhering to Human Rights; or actively supporting the actions and war crimes being perpetrated by the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and the rest of the Middle East, including the Commonwealth's Pakistan; or actively supporting the Zionist Nazis in committing war crimes and genocide against the Palestinian people. Or is it fact, that these leaders, like the US President are criminal hypocrites who deserve to stand in the dock with war criminals like Obama and Netanyahu.
New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the Sri Lanka tour to begin rehabilitation on the rib injury which ruled him out of the second ODI. No replacement has been sought for the remaining games.

Latham, Ronchi power incredible NZ chase Zealand 203 for 6 (Latham 86, Ronchi 49) beat Sri Lanka 138 for 1 (Sangakkara 71*, Dilshan 55*) by four wickets (D/L method) Before this match, 21-year-old Tom Latham had boasted that even this depleted New Zealand side backed themselves to chase tall scores against Sri Lanka. Striking a scintillating career-best 86 off 68 deliveries, Latham proved that threat was not just bluster, as he carried the visitors most of the distance of their 8.6-an-over, rain-shortened chase before an ebullient Nathan Mccullum pulled the match from the brink again, plundering the required 20 off the final over to propel New Zealand beyond the target of 198 off the last ball. Along the way, Luke Ronchi hit his best score for New Zealand, making 49 in the belligerent 93-run partnership with Latham that resurrected the innings, after four wickets had fallen early. The match had earlier been interrupted for five-and-a-half hours by rain and lightning, as Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne D ...

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand first ODI abandoned due to rain
A look at some successful farewells. Steve Waugh: Waugh's glittering career brought him more than 10,000 runs in 168 Tests, a record at the time. Unusually, though, he wasn't on the winning side in his last match - a draw against India in Sydney in January 2004 - after a sentimental season-long goodbye. The script demanded that Waugh should bow out with a century, but after reaching 80 in his final innings, as Australia made a gallant attempt to chase 443, Waugh swept uppishly to square leg, where he was caught by a sheepish Sachin Tendulkar, who then ran over to shake his hand. Nasser Hussain: A farewell hundred, swiftly followed by the winning runs... and at Lord's too: that's how Hussain bowed out of Test Cricket, after his 103 not out helped England beat New Zealand early in the summer of 2004. Very few people knew that this was his last innings, but Hussain did - and announced his official retirement shortly afterwards despite being only four caps short of 100. Sri Lankan immigration authorities on Sunday briefly detained an Australian and a New Zealand politician on a fact-finding mission into alleged Human Rights abuses, officials said. The move came days before the country hosts a Commonwealth summit, amid pressure on visiting leaders to boycott the event over alleged war crimes. Immigration officials held Australian senator Lee Rhiannon and New Zealand MP Jan Logie shortly before they were to hold a press conference about their mission, an opposition Sri Lankan lawmaker said. "They were accused of breaching visa conditions, but they had 'special projects visas' to be in Sri Lanka on a fact-finding mission," Tamil lawmaker MA Sumanthiran told AFP. An immigration official confirmed the pair were detained briefly at their hotel room for questioning, but declined to give details. The Australian high commission (embassy) said the senator had been questioned about an alleged breach of her visa conditions but was later released. "We understand that they are on thei ...

Toss New Zealand chose to bowl v Sri Lanka Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details New Zealand's stand-in captain Kyle Mills chose to bowl in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, on a pitch with a layer of grass that promised movement for the seam bowlers. The threat of rain, which would put the team bowling second at a disadvantage - as they contend with a wet ball - may have influenced Mills' decision as well. Angelo Mathews, however, said he was happy to bat first, and expected the pitch to wear later in the evening. Tom Latham was slated to open alongside Anton Devcich for New Zealand, with Luke Ronchi also in the team, as wicketkeeper. Fast bowlers Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan both made the XI, as did Corey Anderson, but James Neesham missed out due to a groin injury. He was expected to recover in time for Tuesday's second ODI. Neil Broome was also not considered for this match, as he has not yet arrived in the country. Dimuth Karunaratne will open for Sri Lanka, after three months of excellent fi ...
Kyle Mills says its a fresh wicket and with the rain around, Duckworth-Lewis will come into play and we'd rather chase. Its an opportunity for the youngsters to stand up, especially away from home in Sri Lanka, and hopefully set things up for the home season and the World Cup later. We've got Grant Elliot at No. 4 and hopefully he can replicate what Ross does for us and things go well New Zealand, apart from having to brace against the absences of seniors like Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum, are 5-16 in Sri Lanka. Even worse, since 2004, they are yet to win an ODI game here. Razmi from Saudi: "I prefer to give youngesters to open the innings & dilshan go to 5th down to play in the 30th overs power play. India's success was on dhoni playing in later order & youngesters trying their luck in the top order." 2.18pmWeather-wise, things look very good in Hambantota. Sri Lanka v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Hambantota Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first) Sri Lanka: WWLWW New Zealand: LW In the spotlight Last time Sri Lanka played in Hambantota, in two Twenty20s, Nuwan Kulasekara used the breeze to move the ball appreciably in to the right-handers. Lasith Malinga's inconsistency over the past 18 months has meant Kulasekara has become one of Sri Lanka's most dependable players, and this year, he has also become a penetrative threat, particularly in the early overs. If the wind blows again, New Zealand's batsmen may be in for a testing spell long before the spinners come on. Being on the end of any whitewash is dispiriting enough, but first-time captain Kyle Mills has the task of motivating players who have just been thrashed in a series they were expected to win, in Bangladesh. Moreover, he is also the senior man in a green attack, and cannot allow himself a bad day with the ball, if New Zealand are to push Sri Lanka. How he manages the field, his bowler ...

1st ODI: New Zealand out to snap loosing streak against Sri Lanka
Shakib Al Hasan, who missed his side's successful ODI campaign against New Zealand with dengue fever, has said his team's next challenge is to do well away from home. Tigers managed to win the series without him. He believes all this progress means they now have to take their game to the next level. "We now have to do well on foreign soil," Shakib said. "We did well in Sri Lanka earlier this year. Similarly, we have to do well in one or two other countries, and then slowly in every country. Playing well on foreign soil will be our next challenge. "There are a lot of performers in the team. We have been consistent at home over the last two years. We are a very strong side here, we have beaten almost all the sides except Pakistan. We have been winning quite regularly, not once in ten games."

New Zealand newspaper. Cricket: Black Caps fail to defend 307, lose series 3-0 4 November, 2013 Ross Taylor made a fine century; Colin Munro played his best innings for New Zealand; Anton Devcich added a bracing contribution at the start. None of that will be remembered as the pain of a third successive ODI defeat to Bangladesh will gnaw away at New Zealand for some time after they were unable to defend 307 in Fatullah early today. Bangladesh completed a 3-0 sweep in the series - or a Bangla-wash as it's been dubbed by the locals - and have now won their last seven ODIs against New Zealand on home turf. They reached 309 for six - having chased down with some comfort easily the highest total made on the ground three hours earlier. They had five balls to spare and the raucous, packed crowd have a national team of which they can justly be proud. New Zealand have a solitary T20 international to play in Dhaka on Wednesday before they leave for Sri Lanka and five limited-overs internationals await them against ...

McCullum heads home with back trouble Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, is returning home immediately after being ruled out of the final two matches of the Bangladesh tour with "significant" pain from a long-standing back problem. McCullum had already been withdrawn from the forthcoming short tour to Sri Lanka, alongside Ross Taylor, so that he could play some domestic first-class cricket in preparation for the Test series against West Indies which starts on December 3. Now fitness, as well as form, is a concern for McCullum who endured a lean time with the bat in Bangladesh. He made scores of 21, 22 and 11 in the Test series followed by 0 and 14 in the first two one-day internationals which New Zealand lost to concede the series to Bangladesh. Following an MRI scan in Dhaka, Paul Close, the New Zealand physio, said: "Brendon's back needs careful management - it's flared up and is giving him significant pain. The best course of action is getting him home for rehabilitation as soon as possible." A ...

A 0-0 drawn series with host Bangladesh has resulted in New Zealand dropping four ratings points, but it has retained its eighth rank on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings table. 8th-ranked New Zealand entered the series with 79 ratings points, leading Bangladesh by 69 ratings points. As such, because the rankings are weighted to reflect this difference, Black Caps would have gained just 1 ratings point if it had won both the Tests. Host Bangladesh, ranked 10th, had entered the series with 10 ratings points. The 0-0 series result meant that it gained eight ratings points to end at 18 and thereby reduced the gap with ninth-ranked Zimbabwe to 16. Reliance ICC Test Rankings table. as on 25 October: (Rating) 1. South Africa (135), 2. England (116), 3. India (116). 4. Australia (101), 5. West Indies (99), 6. Pakistan (97), 7. Sri La ...
Chappell front-runner for Lanka coach position Colombo, October 21 Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) may end up appointing former Australian captain Greg Chappell as its new chief coach. The SLC sources said the deadline for the selection had been extended until the end of this month with scales weighing highly in favour of Chappell, who was arguably the world's best batsman in the mid 70s. Chappell, of course, had a troublesome stint with India resulting in his exit after a disastrous 2007 World Cup campaign. His differences with some of the senior Indian players including former skipper Sourav Ganguly were widely reported in the media. Besides Chappell, two more Australians, Shane Duff and little known Michael O'Sullivan are among the short list of candidates. Three Indians, Venkatesh Prasad, Lalchand Rajput and Mohit Soni are also in the fray. Paul Farbrace, who has had a stint with Sri Lanka as the assistant coach and Ian Pont are the Englishmen under consideration. Grant Bradburn, the New Zealand 'A' in charge ...

India favourites to retain World Cup Dubai: With exactly 500 days to go before the first ball is bowled in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, batting wizard Sachin Tendulkar has predicted that the trophy will remain in the subcontinent and India are favourites to retain the title. Tendulkar, who along with Pakistan’s Javed Miandad is the only player to play in six World Cups, hoped that if Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side successfully defended the title, then it will once again provide tremendous joy to the nation while making it only the third country after the West Indies and Australia to win back-to-back titles. “Along with India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are also good sides,” said the champion batsman, adding: “I am partial towards India and want them to do well. That would be really exciting. It will give so much happiness to the entire nation. “That is something I would want, along with a billion plus people who will also be expecting the same thing to happen,” Tendulkar said in an ICC release Wedne ...
THE Asian Shippers' Council (ASC) and the European Shipper Council (ESC) have come out against mandatory container weighing and verification ahead of talks at the UN's International Maritime Organisation in London. The ASC and ESC called on the parties taking part in the decision-making at the IMO "to reject these proposals" that are being made without proper analysis of the impact", reported Lloyd's Loading List. The ASC represents shippers' councils in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, China, Macau, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The ASC argues that compulsory rules are not required and it should be enough to add guidance to the relevant sections of the UN's Safety of Life at Sea Convention. Agreeing, the European Shippers' Council, along with the European and international freight forwarders associations Fiata and Clecat as well as the European terminal operators group Feport, say c ...
Most half-centuries in one-day internationals without making a hundred! Pakistan's captain Misbah-ul-Haq, whose highest score in one-day internationals is 96 not out, has indeed reached 50 more often than anyone else (31) who never scored a century - although of course he might still get one, although at 39 he will probably be the oldest man ever to score one if he does (Sanath Jayasuriya and Geoff Boycott both scored ODI hundreds after turning 39). Misbah took the record in July this year from Andrew Jones of New Zealand, who made 25 ODI half-centuries without ever quite managing a hundred - his highest score was 93. Next come Graham Thorpe (21), Kim Hughes (17), and Mudassar Nazar and Michael Vaughan (both 16), before a couple of current players with 15: Elton Chigumbura of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews.
GREETINGS FROM 'THE DAWN' AOTEA New ZealanD: 'WALKING IN BEAUTY' HERE AND NOW by JEFF PHILLIPS :) FROM BEAUTIFUL AOTEA, or Great Barrier Island, to me, one of the most special places not only in all of New Zealand but in the whole world that I've experienced so far. 'Aotea' means 'the dawn' in the ancient pre-Maori polynesian language, and Medlands Beach, where I am now, is where Oruawharo, an ancient and legendary explorer/navigator, first landed here who knows how long ago. Today is THE most absolutely beautiful day in many weeks, and with all the extremely miraculous happenings of late, the full moon coming up tonight (called the 'harvest moon' in the northern hemisphere), and then the austral vernal equinox next week...I feel a tremendous amount of power and beauty streaming through, inspiring and uplifting me. I have SO much to be thankful for. Words fail me in my attempt to share this beauty and power, but I wanted to send this posting to you...my friends wherever you may be, members of my family o ...
MOHALI: Still trying to find its foothold in the cricketing landscape, the Champions League Twenty20 will enter its fourth season on Tuesday with the qualifying matches during which Pakistan's domestic champions Faisalabad Wolves are likely to hog the limelight. A league which was born out of the hugely successful IPL, CLT20 is gradually establishing its identity but it would take some time for it to truly find a connect with the fans. The event will kick off with Faisalabad Wolves, led by Pakistan's Terst skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, taking on New Zealand's Otago Volts in the first qualifier on Tuesday. This would be followed by a star-studded Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Delhi-dasher Shikhar Dhawan, squaring off against Sri Lanka's Kandurata Maroons in the second qualifier at the PCA stadium. Barring Volts, the other three teams in the qualifiers come from the sub-continent, but none among the four feels that either has any big advantage in the event. The top two teams will advance to the main draw, which has ...
1998 - Bangladesh Winners: South Africa Runners-up: West Indies No. Countries: 9 The first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, then known as the ICC Knockout Trophy, was staged in Bangladesh. All matches were played at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka, but the slow and low pitches produced some poor cricket. Severe flooding threatened to cause the whole show to be moved to India, and it only got the go-ahead at the 11th hour. As it was, Dhaka was the third choice after Disneyworld (Florida) and Sharjah. The knock-out format, with eight matches compressed into nine days, fuelled the locals' excitement. Nine teams took part in the event with only eight making it to the quarter-finals. New Zealand played Zimbabwe for the eighth spot and defeated them by five wickets to make it to the last eight. South Africa, Sri Lanka, India and West Indies progressed to the semi-finals. In a rain-affected first semi-final, South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by 92 runs on D/L method. Put into bat, man-of-the-match Jacques Kal ...

Mortaza eyes international comeback in October !! Bangladesh pace bowler Mashrafe Mortaza is targeting the home ODI series against New Zealand in October for his international comeback. His fitness has been boosted by a three-week fitness programme that ended at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday. Mortaza, who has been recovering from a left-heel injury, said that he has lost weight and has started to bowl more overs progressively. He suffered the injury during the Bangladesh Premier League final in February, and has taken unusually long to cure because of the myriad injuries on his left leg. He had undergone a rehabilitation programme while the Bangladesh team was touring Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, and continued to work on his fitness thereafter to participate in the fitness camp which began last month. Mortaza now believes that not only has he completely recovered from the injury, his confidence has also been on the rise. "I have lost four kilos from the start of the camp, and I still ne ...
Rain forces match into reserve day (Submitted by Sports Journalist) PERSISTENT rain in Port-of-Spain meant play was called off for the day after only 19 overs were bowled during Sri Lanka's innings. The match will continue from the current state on Monday. West Indies, motivated by the appearance of the pitch, chose to field second time in a row, but unlike the previous match where they failed to make an early strike, this time, the bowlers found the right length on the pitch to topple Sri Lanka's top order while keeping their run-scoring in a leash. Kemar Roach was the wrecker-in-chief, bowling a menacing spell upfront and was it not for a long and patient vigil by Lahiru Thirimanne and Kumar Sangakkara, the situation could have been far worse for Sri Lanka. While Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic were slugging it out like it was a hard court on the grass at Wimbledon, the pitch at Queen's Park Oval was offering bounce and expected sideways movement to excite the fast bowlers. Roach's first ball was certain ...
