Like everyone, I'm doing some reflecting today. Yes, 2014 had some good moments—even some great ones. I cavorted with thousands of penguins in Antarctica, climbed to mountaintop monasteries in Bhutan, tracked lions on foot in Botswana, got within arm's length of polar bears in Nunavut, swam with beluga whales in Hudson Bay, ate fat steaks in Argentina, sailed on a distant sound (and slept in the same bed as William and Kate) on New Zealand's South Island, got unplugged in Haida Gwaii, walked the Great Wall of China, drank fermented camel's milk in Mongolia's Gobi Desert, skydived over the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I visited my seventh continent and my 97th country. But this year will always and forever, for me, be a year of life-changing loss. Of grief and struggle. Of climbing mountains—only to find more mountains. But I'm convinced of good things on the path ahead. So I say, good riddance 2014. And 2015—happy to meet you.

Want to know about New Zealand -New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island , or Te Ika-a-Māui , and the South Island , or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia , Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life; most notable are the large number of unique bird species . The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions.

From Kookaburras photostream 6792. Surely one of the most spectacular visual combinations of ship and scenery on this Photostream, this large high-resolution 1957 image shows HMAS MELBOURNE [II] on her first trip to New Zealand, having set out there from her first Hobart Regatta. In what appears tol have been essentially a flag-showing visit she had called at Port Chalmers [the port for Dunedin far down the South Island] and Milford Sound was her second landfall. Still wearing her original Y deck letter, MELBOURNE [II] is seen here with seven Sea Venom fighter-bombers and one Fairey Gannet on her flight deck, the last part-obscured. She looks quite business-like, with relatively few crew on deck, mostly working [some crew appear to be laying out the arrestor wires for flying]. Perhaps the ship's Sycamore helicopter, bearing photographer George Self, has also just taken off. Apart from that, the only obvious gawkers are the two men looking out at the stern overhang, called the Admiral's Walkway, although t ...

Thoughts going out to our neighbours in New Zealand who are feeling the wrath of today. Ita would still be a Category 2 Cyclone if it was in tropical waters. Warnings are out for New Zealand for Winds up to 110km/h, isolated to 140km/h and Heavy to Torrential Rain especially on the Northern Island where falls of more than 25mm an hour are possible, totalling in more than 150mm. Damage is likely from the Wind Gusts, and Flash Flooding is also likely in low lying areas that are prone to flooding. Ita looks like moving South towards the South Island tonight and into tomorrow, with Wind Gusts and Heavy Rain becoming less prominent on both Islands as the LOW weakens. So today and mainly this afternoon is definitely the worst its going to get. Image 1: BSCH Forecast showing the massive "LOW" which is considered Ita Image 2: New Zealand Metservice Warning Map

Hi Biswajith, I am writing this on a dirt road just outside the small town of Te Anau, New Zealand. I'll be catching a boat across Lake Hauroko, and from there I’ll spend eight days trekking through the Fiordlands, home to sweeping glaciers, fantastic mountains, endless rain, countless sandflies … and hopefully some other secrets to be discovered as well. It's been a rough, wet season here on New Zealand’s South Island, but it has still been a productive one. The potential of first descents in the world of technical canyoning is immense; everywhere you look there are deep gorges and huge waterfalls plunging from the glacier-capped mountains high above. We're aiming to knock out a couple of first descents in the coming weeks, and we are gearing up and planning for some major routes later this year. One canyon in particular appears to be, from what we've gathered on scouting missions, likely the most difficult slot canyon in the world to descend. If we're successful, it will expand our knowledge of th ...

Anzac spirit helps Australia to shearuing test win over New Zealand The camaraderie of international shearing has again been demonstrated with an Australian transtasman series victory over New Zealand on the Kiwis’ home turf – on the back of a tutorial from some of New Zealand’s top shearers and instructors. Visiting shearers Shannon Warnest, Jason Wingfield and Daniel McIntyre hammered New Zealanders Rowland Smith, John Kirkpatrick and Dion Morrell by almost 20 points on the last night of the 54th Golden Shears in Masterton on Saturday. Later, Warnest, whose 14 years in international shearing have included the record-setting features of 22 transtasman tests, 13 wins, five away victories in Masterton, and being the top individual at least 15 times, said a major factor was the two-day shearing school they spent last week in Palmerston North. Instructors included Taranaki farmer and fellow former World champion Paul Avery, and Shearing Sports New Zealand chairman Gavin Rowland, in his role as head of ...

The Civil Defence has arrived at the scene to inspect the damaged properties. According to fire service shift manager Andrew Norris, a group of homes in Amberley have been heavily damaged. The town is 50km north of Christchurch. Based on fire service reports, strong winds from the tornado had lifted the tiles off roofs of homes near the Burnham Military Camp. Southern Fire Communications Shift Manager Karl Patterson said he received reports of one house losing an entire roof. The tornado, barreling its way through South Island, also knocked down trees and caused power poles to catch fire. Mr Patterson said the fire service put out fires in Halsquell Quarry which were caused by lightning. Despite the damages to some homes . ...
Flaxbourne, South Island, New Zealand, Pinot Noir, 2012 23. february, 2013 91-93/100 I have long, unrightfully, neglected the charming wines of New Zealand due to an overconsumption of prosaic Sauvignon Blancs in my early wine years. Lately, however, a mysterious re-interest have suddently emerged in wines made from Syrah and Pinot Noir, which may seem surprising as I just recently returned from a trip to Seattle and Willamette Valley - America's answer to Burgundy. I guess it´s the dialectics of (wine)experience that makes you oscillate from one area to another without an apparent reason. The Flaxbourne Pinot Noir is a lovely wine. There is a striking balance between the hedonistic dimension which offers immediate drinking pleasure with seductive and velvety Pinot fruit, and the more complex dimension demanding intellectual attention and reflection. Impressions range from sour-cherries, liquorice, black pepper and intense Asian spices. The finish is bitter-sweet and rather complicated without an obviou ...
The new Chinese tourism law is great for South Island tourism businesses. Are you reaching them? - List on China Connect. "Government figures show the number of Chinese visitors coming to New Zealand for a short stay has dropped for three straight months since the start of October. That's when a new Chinese travel law was introduced to stop tour operators subsidising tour prices by packing itineraries with selective shopping destinations. The knock-on effect has been a 25 to 30 percent rise in the retail price of New Zealand tours promoted in China, Tourism NZ Chief Executive Kevin Bowler told BusinessDesk." Source:

It's probably no surprise that if "N" is for "North Island," then "S" would be for "South Island." As I noted earlier, there are actually many islands in the archipelago we call New Zealand. Auckland's 150 island constellation is only a small part of the 700 islands which are NZ. The actual southern-most land is Stewart Island (Rakiura) which is primarily a bird sanctuary which is home to penguins and kiwis. (South of SI, the next landfall is Antarctica.) The South Island proper is quite different from the more temperate northland. The people in Auckland described it as frigid, but in actuality, the average winter temperature is in the high forties. The terrain is greatly varied where the Pacific plate is sliding beneath the Australian and is still lifting the "Southern Alps" whose highest peak is Mt Cook which rises to 12,313 feet. Besides snow covered peaks, it has cold turquoise lakes (Queenstown), and rain forests where the tree ferns and beech forests are primeval and flow down from the treeless heig ...

Brit Surfer Punches Shark That Bit Leg In NZ British surfer has described how he punched a shark and managed to fight the predator off after it sunk its teeth into his leg. Darren Mills was surfing in Porpoise Bay off the coast of New Zealand's South Island on Friday when he was attacked. The shark seized hold of the 28-year-old's leg and left three deep bite wounds from his thigh to his calf. Mr Mills, who lives in Queenstown but is originally from Crawley, West Sussex, told ONE News he felt "really lucky" to be alive. Speaking from his hospital bed, he recalled paddling across the back of the surf when he felt a "big thump" and saw the shark biting his leg. "When it hit me and sort of like pushed me out and around a wee bit and yeah I just sort of realised what was going on and could see it and tried to punch it but it was more like a push. "I was pretty scared it was going to come back but it didn’t and I managed to get into shore and … it was just really scary you know." Mr Mills was surfing in wa ...

Big Bird Bones of a previously unknown ancient seabird unearthed in New Zealand have proved to belong to the group of modern birds despite their age. Thought to have lived between 60.5 and 61.6 million years ago, the fossil bird species – named Australornis lovei – lived shortly after the big extinction of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. Bones of the bird were discovered in 2009 in rocks representative of the early Paleocene Waipara Greensand near Canterbury, South Island, by Leigh Love, an amateur fossil collector. The new species, Australornis lovei has been named in honour of Love’s discovery. The bird lacks key morphological features of penguins, though it was found near the fossils of Waimanu manneringi, the oldest penguin, estimated to be of the same age.
Nancy Tichborne is a New Zealand watercolour artist with an international following. Born in Levin in 1942, she received a scholarship from Otago Girls' High School to train in the United Kingdom - at the St Martin's School of Art in London. After this she lived and worked in Great Britain and Hong Kong. Coming back to New Zealand in 1969, she spent several happy years working as a landscape designer in Rotorua. Currently Nancy lives on a 4 hectare (11 acre) rural property on Banks Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand, where she and her husband Bryan have a large garden. In 2011 the New Zealand Gardens Trust designated this garden a 'Garden of Significance'. Nancy is probably best known for the annual calendars she and Bryan published for 25 years. These featured mainly floral and cat subjects but also included fly fishing and vineyard themes. Nancy has put out three instructional dvds/video tapes on watercolours and has been involved in ten books, both as illustrator and writer. Over 500 people h ...

ndia will kick off their New Zealand tour in January with an ODI in Napier. Auckland and Wellington will host the two Tests later in February and have also been given an ODI each. Hamilton, which missed out on the Tests, has been awarded two ODIs, meaning India won't be playing any games in New Zealand's South Island. NZC Chief Executive David White said the four ODI venues, the only ones in the country with permanent lights, were selected keeping in mind the international and domestic broadcasters' requests for day-night matches, as well as to cater to the needs of Indian fans in New Zealand. "We felt that with the Tests in Wellington and Auckland, that Hamilton was the best spot for a second one-dayer with a large Indian population on their doorstep," White said. Auckland's Eden Park, with its bigger capacity, also edged out Hamilton's Seddon Park to stage the first Test from February 6-10, while the second will be played in the country's premier Test venue, the Basin Reserve in Wellington from February ...

Just seen a programme that we recorded yesterday. It was James Nesbitt's view of New Zealand. Apparently he has been living in Wellington for the last two years when he was involved in the filming of the Tolkien stories. Most of the programme featured North Island, with only about 15 minutes on South Island. It hardly seems possible that we will soon be heading back there again to finish the holiday that we started this year. Looking forward to seeing a little bit more of Christchurch, as well as making it to North Island.
Ramdin urges Windies to fight hard Vice captain and wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin said West Indies need to successfully get through the initial exchanges in the first Test against New Zealand to set the tone for the rest of the series. The first Test opens on Tuesday at the intimate University Oval in the second largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the principal city of the Otago Region. “It looks like a good batting track,” said Ramdin, one of only two players that have ever played a Test in this country. “The first day is going to very important – the first hour. Whoever wins the toss will have to make the most of the opportunity either batting or bowling first.” He added: “It’s not like the Caribbean where you can hit through the line. You have to *** the conditions and bat very long. “The New Zealanders are going to bowl in [good] areas and try to get wickets early, so we will need to work hard as a batting group.” The Windies are looking to bounce back from a ...
I Love Kosher Wine - A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand has become a real success story for wine. Not all that long ago they were making wine from virtually unknown grapes such as Isabella, which isn't even a member of the wine grape family. Now their signature grape, Sauvignon Blanc, has stole a lot of France's thunder. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc wines are prized the world over, and are quite distinctive. The wine reviewed below comes from the South Island wine region of Marlborough, the country's most famous wine area; one particularly known for its Sauvignon Blancs. Unusual for New Zealand, this wine is Kosher. It has been flash-pasteurized; the technical word is Mevushal, which means that observant Jews consider it to be Kosher, no matter who serves it. Once upon a time Mevushal meant boiled wine, a process virtually destroying its taste and eliminating its use in pagan rituals. The presently used flash pasteurization process is much more gentle. As you'll see, the wine reviewed is by no mea ...

CONROY EXTENDS SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD Invercargill driver Jamie Conroy has extended his lead in the South Island Formula Ford Championship after winning the latest round of the series at Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch this weekend. Conroy currently leads both the South Island and New Zealand Championships in his Mygale. After a clean sweep at the previous round at Timaru last month Conroy had to overcome some problems before coming out on top at this round. "It was hard going at the start as we battled understeer and it was really the last race before we made inroads," the 22-year-old said at the conclusion of the round. A minor engine issue as well as the handling problem meant Jamie ended qualifying third of the Formula Ford contingent behind Michael Collins and Ryan Yardley. However he made a great start to get ahead of his championship rivals at the first corner of the opening race although tyre pressure problems saw him finish second to Collins of Christchurch in that race. As the ...

The number of people living in New Zealand on census night was 4,242,048, which was 214,101 more than at the last census seven years ago, Statistics NZ announced today. “This means that, on average, the population has grown by about 31,000 people per year since the last census in 2006. This was slower growth than between 2001 and 2006, when the population grew by an average of about 58,000 per year,” Government Statistician Liz MacPherson said. The increase in population means that at the general election next year there will be a total of 71 electorates. There will be one new North Island electorate, up from 47 at the last election. The number of Māori electorates will stay at seven, and the number of general electorates in the South Island is fixed at 16 by the Electoral Act 1993. “Adding this new electorate means there will be one less list seat in the 120-seat parliament – excluding any overhang seats,” Ms MacPherson said. The general electoral population is 2,867,110 for the North Island a ...

Never met him, don't know who he is and he doesn't have a retail outlet, but once a month we drop him a mail, make a direct payment and 2Kg of the BEST biltong gets delivered to our doorstep! (He is somewhere in the South Island) Someone asked me the other day how we found 'Biltong Guy', and all I could say was that it was after a Google search, while looking for high quality beef biltong... I love the trusting nature with which we live in NZ! Then there is the 'Hake Guy'... iPhone beeps with an incoming text... "Got Hake arriving tomorrow. Want some?"... My friendly fishmonger from down the road that knows I will do anything to get Hake! So he texts me to keep me in-the-know... Ah, living in NZ... It is definitely something special!

Some time ago we were showing our friends in Hamburg these Snowberry photographs. The shots were taken near Lake Tekapo, which is in New Zealand's South Island, on a typical early winter day. the spontaneous response was, "Oh, that's not real!" They were convinced we had photo-shopped first to intensify the colours and secondly, to remove all the apartment buildings that must surely be along the lake shore...we hadn't of course. It is exactly as you see here. Which is why we associate Snowberry with this very beautiful sky, mountains and lake because Snowberry is about fresh, pure and authentic skin care. On the other hand, the sheer blueness of the sky perhaps explains why sunscreens in New Zealand are very important and is why Snowberry is one of the few skin care brands that have developed dedicated natural, broad spectrum sunscreens. We believe scenery can say much about human aspirations and values. Perhaps you'd like to comment?
Akaroa is the winter. My childhood introduction to my 'Mona Lisa' and Leonardo da Vinci as a 10 year old began in Akaroa, South Island, New Zealand, a one hour drive from Christchurch shattered by the September 2010 and again February 2011 earthquakes. Rebuilding of the city is underway.
This Day In Music: June 26th 1955, Elvis Presley (Scotty Moore and Bill Black) played the first of three nights at the Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. The local paper ran a preview which read; ‘A good looking youngster who has become a juke-box favorite with his That's Alright, Mama, and Blue Moon of Kentucky. Presley is expected to repeat some of his hit tunes at the Airmen's Club show in addition to mixing up a few country tunes with some "bop" and novelty numbers.’ 1961, Gary U.S. Bonds started a two-week run at No.1 on the US charts with 'Quarter To Three', a No.7 hit in the UK. Before Bonds recorded this, it was an instrumental by The Church Street Five called 'A Night With Daddy G.' Bond's manager added lyrics to it and had him record it. This is often covered by Bruce Springsteen, who is a big fan. In 1981, Springsteen produced a successful comeback album for Bonds. 1964, During a world tour, The Beatles played two shows at Town Hall, Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand. The fligh ...

WEATHER UPDATE FROM TV 3. WELLINGTON IONS IT'S AWFUL OUT THERE SO STAY INDOORS. STAY SAFE! A band of torrential showers, freezing temperatures, hail, thunderstorms and damaging winds which have covered the South Island are now battering the North. Gales are howling into Wellington, damaging buildings, downing trees and causing power outages affecting up to 30,000 homes across the region. Wellington Electricity has confirmed attempts are being made to safely restore power supply, but delays are likely. The wind has been blowing at an average of 140-150 km per hour, and WeatherWatch says the risk for more lasts over the next six to nine hours. All ferries and trains in and out of the capital are cancelled tonight, and the same goes for flights, leaving passengers stranded and causing a huge backlog in Auckland. Warnings are also in place for severe gales in the west of the South Island, around central New Zealand and over the upper North Island. Internet Beaming Balloon by Google.. Wrinkled and skinny at first, the translucent, jellyfish-shaped balloons that Google released this week from a frozen field in the heart of New Zealand's South Island hardened into shiny pumpkins as they rose into the blue winter skies above Lake Tekapo, passing the first big test of a lofty goal to get the entire planet online. It was the culmination of 18 months' work on what Google calls Project Loon, in recognition of how whacky the idea may sound. Developed in the secretive X lab that came up with a driverless car and web-surfing eyeglasses, the flimsy helium-filled inflatables beam the internet down to earth as they sail past on the wind. Still in their experimental stage, the balloons were the first of thousands that Google's leaders eventually hope to launch 20 kilometers (12 miles) into the stratosphere in order to bridge the gaping digital divide between the world's 4.8 billion unwired people and their 2.2 billion plugged-in counterparts. If successful, the t ...

What is New Zealand Famous For New Zealand is famous for its indigenous people, the Maori. Descendents of Polynesian explorers who settled the Pacific Ocean more than 1000 years ago, the Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud. Maori tattoos - often covering the entire face of a male, known as ta moko - are also famous. Opera diva, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa - who sung at Prince Charles of England's wedding to Lady Diana Spencer - is Maori. New Zealand's famous rugby team, the All Blacks, are also famous because they perform a traditional war dance, the haka, before every test match. Oscar winner, Russell Crowe has Maori heritage, he descends from the Ngati Porou tribe through his mothers mother. New Zealand is also famous for its spectacular landscapes. South Island's scenery consists of plains, fjords, forests, mountains and Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. North Island is known for its volcanoes and for its geothermal activity. THE JAPAN QUAKE Benjamin Fulford had been saying for two years that the Rockefeller faction was threatening Japan with earthquake weapons that would target nuclear facilities. The quake was on March 11th. On March 7th, Fulford discussed a similar attack that had just been perpetuated against Christchurch, New Zealand because they refused to offer their island paradise to the New World Order as a refuge (Emphasis added.) There is extreme turbulence in world events as the campaign to oust the rogue cabal in control of the United States enters its final phase. One sign is a cut-off of some oil supplies to the U.S. regime, according to US military intelligence. Another is that Serbian operatives claim to have smuggled a nuclear weapon near BIS headquarters in Switzerland. Yet another is that the one million American Satanists are using earthquake weapon blackmail in an effort to force New Zealand to give them their South Island as a refuge. Meanwhile, promises of imminent mass arrests of cabal members continu ...
For our honeymoon, Karen and I are looking at driving around the South Island of New Zealand, as bizarrely neither of us have been there yet, although I have seen the North Island, which I adored. The question would be to all you NZ fans, where are the 'not to be missed' places we need to include on our trip, and will two weeks be enough? I want to see snow, mountains, rivers and feel like I'm in Lord of the Rings :-)
Went to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji. Want to go back to New Zealand and check out South Island and Hawkes Bay on North Island.
Name of Lake Te Anau was originally Te Ana-au, Maori for 'The cave of swirling water'. The lake covers an area of 344 km², making it the second-largest lake by surface area in New Zealand (after Lake Taupo) and the largest in the South Island. Lake Te Anau is however the largest lake in Australasia by fresh water volume. Most of the lake is within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. Other than the Te Anau township, the only human habitation close to the lake is the farming settlement of Te Anau Downs, close to the mouth of the Eglinton River. Several species of endangered birds live around the shores of Lake Te Anau, notably the Takahē (Notornis hochstetteri). An area between the Middle and South Fiords called the Murchison Mountains is a sanctuary set aside for these birds. The western shore of the lake also features the Te Ana-au Caves, from which the lake derives its name. Yellowtail Kingfish: This is another species that put New Zealand on the map as a major sport fishing destination. Kingies reach their maximum size in New Zealand with almost all world records coming from our waters. The all tackle world record stands at 52kg, a size of fish that is held equally in both 15 and 24kg line classes. Both fish came from the Bay of Plenty. These big powerful fish are relatively plentiful and easy to target, but landing them is another story altogether as they are virtually unstoppable and normally inhabit relatively foul areas. The hot spots are the Three Kings islands, White island and the Ranfurly bank off East Cape. They are found consistently throughout the top half of the North Island in good numbers and as far south as the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. They can be caught year round with winter fish tending to be less common but generally larger. Summer is the best time to target kingfish. They are usually found around rocky headlands, reefs and deepwa ...

14 May 2013 - for immediate release: SALE RESIDENTS WALK IN NEW ZEALAND FOR BARRIER BREAKERS A group of walkers from Sale recently hiked across the North end of the South Island of New Zealand and raised funds for the Barrier Breakers supported accommodation for people with a mental illness appeal. The 12 member group included local identity, Trevor Carr (known locally as Doc) and his wife Kathy and also included 3 real medical Doctors from the Sale area. Labouring up some of the more rugged peaks, the group took 5 days to complete the adventure and enjoyed the experience of walking in some of the steps of Captain James Cook, who first discovered this unique part of the world. Doc’s wife, Kathy-Luxford Carr, the group’s organiser, said, “If I’m going to walk this beautiful country I may as well raise some money for Barrier Breakers”. So she rang her friend, Lance Hunt, the convenor of Barrier Breakers in Sale to arrange a quick “whip-around” and raised $320 for the appeal’s cause. Cathy, . ...

New Zealand is a very beautiful place. Everybody should come here once. There are so many different sights. There are palm trees, mts., ocean, rain forests, glaciers, and rolling hills within a mile or so of each other. Tomorrow we go out to see the fijords of Milford Sound. Then in a day we are off to Austrailia for 2 weeks to see and to dive the Great Barrier Reef. bev
Yesterday was a busy day with visits to various Catlins sights before driving on to a (rather scruffy but powered) campsite from where I'll have a shorter, more pleasant, drive to Fiordland. Yesterday started with a walk aling beautiful Tautuku beach, then on to McLean Falls (photos already posted). Then drive to Porpoise Bay, where I watched Hectors dolphins - terrific! On just around the corner to Curio Bay, where one solitary yellow-eyed penguin was moulting, and suffering the indignity of being the most photographed penguin in the South Island. The fossilised trees on the beach were interesting - a pretty spot. On then to Slope Point, the most southerly spot. Then to Waipapa Point, where these New Zealand sea lions were dozing on the beach. Drove then to Bluff for a look at Stewart Island, then Invercargill, then here. Just doing odd jobs now before heading off to Manipouri and Te Anau and the lovely mountains! Whether I'll have a signal there, time will tell .
Big Day of football for Tornadoes players. Just a few highlights: Tornadoes 5's Liam Wood got his first start for his club's men's first team. Liam played 75 minutes of a 1-0 win over Karori in the Hilton Petone pre-season competition at just 14 years old. Also from Tornadoes 5: Jonty Bilderbeck's Western Suburbs U15 team won through to the Southern Final of Manchester United Premier Cup qualifying. They now play South Island champions Cashmere for a place in the New Zealand final. Tornadoes 4's Jack Craughwell played alongside his brother, Tornadoes 2's James Craughwell as they both got their first team debut for Lower Hutt. They also won in the Hilton Petone. Sure there are more, so sorry if we've missed anyone! Congrats to all who played.

On behalf of Shearing Sports New Zealand February 7, 2013 Buoyed Stratford ready for shears champs breakthrough Invercargill shearer Nathan Stratford will be looking for a major breakthrough for South Island shearing when he tackles the Open competition at the Otago Shearing and Woolhandling Championships in Balclutha tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday. With domination by mainly by Te Kuiti legend David Fagan and Napier gun John Kirkpatrick, no South Island shearer has won the competition’s Open title in the 21st Century. Stratford has missed the final in the last two years, but reached four of the previous eight showdowns, with best placings of third in 2004 and 2007. But a whiff of a breakthrough came when he won another North Island dominated event four weeks ago, the national longwool title in Lumsden. He says he’s buoyed by that success, and keen for another battle with Kirkpatrick with whom he will also be shearing for New Zealand against Wales on Saturday in the second Elders Primary Wool Shearing ...
Dear Friends, Colleagues and Relatives, near and far. Tomorrow I leave London for New Zealand, in the footsteps of our Grandmother Kathleen Scott, nee Bruce. 100 Years ago K was travelling to meet her husband, the explorer Captain RF Scott, returning from the South Pole. But he wouldn't make it back. 'Her wireless' reached her ship on 19th February 1912, far out in the Pacific somewhere near Tahiti. The rest of the world had known the news for more than a week. There will be events next week in Oamaru, South Island, to commemorate the centenary of Scott's ship, the Terra Nova, returning to port. As a family representative I will be reading from my sister biography of our grandmother, opening an exhibition of Antarctic inspired art and talking to various groups about K, she and Scott's son Peter, and the resonance of these century-old events in my own family and life. After the ceremonies are done, I plan to visit some of the places where Kathleen went on her journeys - Port Charmers near Dunedin, where s ...

Kiwi traditions • Celebrating with family • Eating a roast dinner and Christmas pudding • Decorating the tree as a family • Santa Claus • Hanging Christmas stockings • Buying all the family a present • Carols by candlelight • Going to church First place to see Christmas After the Chatham Islands, New Zealand is the first place in the world to see the sun and with the country on summer time or daylight saving, there are maximum daylight hours to enjoy Christmas. In parts of the South Island it's light by 5am and doesn’t get dark until 10pm. Christmas food Many families stick to northern hemisphere tradition and have roast turkey, roast vegetables and hams followed by traditional Christmas pudding. Increasingly, Christmas dinner has taken on a more relaxed look with lots of fresh seafood (particularly crayfish) and barbecued food on offer. And of course, most Kiwi Christmas tables will have the iconic Kiwi dessert – the pavlova. See separate post for a classic recipe.

Need to get myself to the Iberian Peninsula. Some of the best people are Catalans and I've never yet set foot in Barcelona (or Spain/Portugal for that matter). On foot is always one of the best ways to take in the world's most beautiful places (England's Lake District, New Zealand's South Island, the Himalayas), and I'd love to walk some the Pyrenees pilgrimage routes between Toulouse and Puente la Reina . Thanks for the share, Dubie. It tugs at me to start packing.
Gisborne boasts being the first city in the world to greet the sun each day. However, in 2011, Samoa decided to skip a day to be moved westward across the international dateline, to align with trade partners, and its capital Apia thus can now claim that title. Before that move, however, Gisborne's claim was technically only true for part of the year. Both Suva, Fiji, and Nukuʻalofa, Tonga, are closer to the International Date Line and therefore would seem more likely candidates for this title. Due to the Earth's tilt on its axis, however, Gisborne does overtake their claim as New Zealand summer days grow longer. In the longest days of summer, though, it again loses the title to the hillier suburbs of Dunedin in the South Island. The city has the benefit of being very close to Waikanae and Midway Beach. A short distance from the city is the surf beach of Wainui.

In our swim squads we have people from Hungary, Ireland, UK, Canada, USA , Australia, South Island :-), Scotland, Germany, Turkey, Samoa and even Auckland :-) Watching the Olympics has been fun from the point of view of looking at other countries to also see how they do. It is interesting to note that appart from Britain which have performed extremely well (25 Golds) Hungary have punched well above their weight with 8 golds for just 11 million people - eat your heart out Australia (6 Golds). New Zealand of course have done very well and I'm still holding out for one of my favorites, Sarah Walker, to come through with a Gold in the BMX. While it is disappointing to see Nick Willis drop back in the final stages of the 1500 it is also understandably one of the hardest races to win. The variables in the 1500 are multiple. You have the stamina, strength component to help get to the last 300 so you can then extract your absolute best speed. Tactics throughout the 4 laps is crucial while the physical danger of b ...
The Government’s agenda to open up New Zealand waters to the global oil industry suffered a setback last week, with Anadarko shelving plans for deep water drilling off the South Island this summer. For this summer at least, Kiwi families won’t have to worry about the prospect of oil washing up on their beaches from a Gulf of Mexico type disaster. For now, we have kept New Zealand waters free from deep water oil drilling. The move by Anadarko (a partner in the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon spill) comes against a backdrop of rising opposition around the country - which Greenpeace supporters are helping to lead. But while the public is heading in one direction, the Government is heading in another. While we demand a clean energy future for our kids, the Government is bending over backwards to invite big oil to our shores, including introducing a new law aimed at creating weak environmental protection around our coastal EEZ (exclusive economic zone). But the momentum is with us. Even the Government’s own ...
New Zealand style note: People live in (not "on") the South Island or in the North Island; note definite article
The steepness and beauty of the Southern Alps astonished first-time visitors to Canterbury or the West Coast. Their snow-covered heights dominate the skyline of the central part of the south island, extending in an unbroken north-east/southwest line for 450kms(280 miles) from Lewis pass to key summit divide on the Milford road. In the central portion, from Whitcombe pass in the head of the Rakaia River to Haast pass, the peaks are generally above 2,500 metres (8,200 feet). In Westland National Park the main divide peaks tower 3,000 –3700 metres (9,800-12,100) above sea level. It was these peaks of prodigious height’ that led Captain James Cook, sailing along the West Coast during his first visit to New Zealand in 1770, to name the range the Southern Alps. These mountains are of deep significance to the Ngai Tahu, whose tradition reveres them as ancestors. In their mythology the South Island is the stranded canoe of Aoraki, the eldest son of Raki the sky father. Aoraki and his brothers scrambled onto t ...
So much to see so little time. We've been to middle earth to visit "Hobbiton" where Bilbo Baggins lives (Lord of the Rings), a traditional Maori village, a thermal village where the Maori cooked using hot thermal pools, Sheep Shearing demonstrations, and we took a skytram to the top of a mountain where we "luged down". Dale "zorbed" (think large ball, water, and rolling down a hill while inside), and we both "schweebed" (a track with bikes). We are on to Wellington tomorrow before heading to the South Island. New Zealand is absolutely gorgeous!
You may not know this, but I'm still alive! My 5 1/2 week journey of New Zealand's South Island ends tomorrow. On July 11 I will be going to the North Island for 2 weeks. I'm uploading some new journal entries that cover the last 3 weeks.
