Phar Lap Last vintage film of him in Australia before going to North America. Phar Lap (4 October 1926 – 5 April 1932) was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse whose achievements captured the public's imagination during the early years of the Great Depression. Foaled in New Zealand, he was trained and raced in Australia by Harry Telford. Phar Lap dominated Australian racing during a distinguished career, winning a Melbourne Cup, two Cox Plates, an AJC Derby, and 19 other weight for age races. He then won the Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana, Mexico in track-record time in his final race. After a sudden and mysterious illness, Phar Lap died in 1932. At the time, he was the third highest stakes-winner in the world. His mounted hide is displayed at the Melbourne Museum, his skeleton at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and his heart is currently stored at the National Museum of Australia storage annexe in Mitchell, Canberra.

U2 – Rare Joshua Tree Singles (Pt 2) Not many places got a 4th single from “The Joshua Tree”. As previously covered, North America had “In God’s Country’. Two other countries that did get one were Australia and New Zealand. “One Tree Hill” is a song written about a Maori friend of Bono’s who died in 1986 which is obviously why the song was chosen for release in New Zealand. The single was released on 7” and cassette and even though the song reached number one there copies are hard to find and very expensive now, particularly the cassette. The easier way to get a copy is the Australian 7” which was exported around the world so finding a copy isn’t too hard although people still tend to want a bit of money for them. 7” pressings (some or all, I don’t know) came with a printed insert with the lyrics over the top of a picture of the hill in Auckland where the song gets its name. All formats have the same artwork and b-sides as the North American “In God’s Country” release. Th ...
History of Halloween Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve. Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dea . ...

Queen won’t work with Adam Lambert forever! Ever since it was confirmed that Adam Lambert would be fronting rock band Queen, fans around the world have been hoping the group would pay a visit to their country. While the band have just finished a tour of North America, Australia and New Zealand and plan to tour the UK and Europe next year, Brian May has admitted that he doesn’t plan to work with Adam forever. Adam Lambert away from Queen is a credible, stand alone artist who at present is hard at work on his third solo album. The Queen guitarist has revealed that when it comes to working with the American Idol star they have a “finite window of opportunity” This doesn’t mean that when the UK and European dates are finished next year the supergroup are done forever, but they will be done for a while. Taking to his official website earlier in the week he posted a response to a letter which had been sent in by Queen’s Mexican fan club who clearly want a piece of the tour. May explained: “First o ...

The chukar partridge or chukar (Alectoris chukar) is a Eurasian upland gamebird in the pheasant family Phasianidae. It has been considered to form a superspecies complex along with the rock partridge, Philby's partridge and Przevalski's partridge and treated in the past as conspecific particularly with the first. This partridge has well marked black and white bars on the flanks and a black band running from the forehead across the eye and running down the head to form a necklace that encloses a white throat. The species has been introduced into many other places and feral populations have established themselves in parts of North America and New Zealand.

Did you know? (Today, June 22) is a major history day. --Today in 1611, after spending a winter trapped by ice in present-day Hudson Bay, the starving crew of the Discovery mutinied against the captain, English navigator Henry Hudson, and set him, his teenage son, and seven supporters adrift in a small, open boat. Hudson and the eight others were never seen again. --Today in 1633, the Holy Office in Rome forced Galileo to recant his scientific view that the sun, not the earth, is the center of the universe. --Today in 1757, George Vancouver was born. He joined the British navy at age 13. He surveyed the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and western North America and sailed with Captain Cook to the Arctic in 1780. (I've never read what he did in his spare time!) --Today in 1815, Napoleon abdicated as French emperor for the second and final time. --Today in 1870, the U.S. Department of Justice was created. Prior to 1870, the attorney general had been a member of the president's cabinet but had not been ...

Michael Jackson's Vision ☆ "Give In to Me" is the tenth track on Michael Jackson's 1991 studio album Dangerous. The single peaked at number one in New Zealand for four consecutive weeks, and at number two on the UK Singles Chart. Stylistically, "Give In to Me" is a hard rock ballad which featured Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Slash. The song, also considered a heavy metal ballad, has an aggressive sexual flavor. The single was never released in North America or Asia.

235 years ago today, Captain James Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay in South Kona. His arrival in Hawaii ushered in an age of rapid change for Hawaii and the Hawaiian people; changes that have made him quite the controversial historical figure. As far as his travels, he is considered by many to be one of the greatest explorers in human history; having traveled into the Arctic Ocean, towards Antarctica, and making significant discoveries in Australia, North America and of course the Pacific. From Cook Inlet in Alaska, Cooktown in Queensland, Australia, the Cook Strait in New Zealand, the Cook Islands and of course our very own Captain Cook, Hawaii, many places honor his legacy. Having been present with Cook at Kealakekua Bay, King Kamehameha I was confronted by the changes brought about by Cook's arrival in the islands. For the rest of his life, Kamehameha and the Hawaiian people in general had to wrestle with how to handle the new reality that Cook's arrival presented. Puukohola Heiau National Historic S ...

This book was written as an antidote to Jared Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel, which advocated that the historical dominance of Western Europe and North America was due to a fortuitous conincidence of domesticatable animals, weather, and natural resources.   These authors, professors at the London School of Economics, argue that the success of nations is a function of the degree to which their political and economic structures are inclusive, allowing the full participation of their population.  They argue that all corners of the world started out with political and economic systems that were extractive in nature -- designed to extract wealth and power for a small elite at the expense of the population as a whole.  The societies that were first unable to preserve this structure -- namely, England and, later, France -- wound up benefitting from what was at the time seen as a failure of their societies.     Most of the developed world -- Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan -- hav ...
Join us: Who colonised Africa? Colonialism is the system or policy by which a country maintains foreign colonies, especially in order to exploit them economically. purposes of colonialism included economic exploitation of the colony’s natural resources, creation of new markets for the colonialist, and extension of the colonialist’s way of life beyond its national borders. In the years 1500-1900, Europe colonised all of North and South America and Australia, most of Africa, and much of Asia by sending settlers to populate the land or by taking control of governments. The first colonies were established in the Western Hemisphere by the Spanish and Portuguese in the 15th-16th century. The Dutch colonised Indonesia in the 16th century, and Britain colonised North America and India in the 17th-18th century. Later, British settlers colonised Australia and New Zealand. Colonisation of Africa only began in earnest in the 1880s, but by 1900 virtually the entire continent was controlled by Europe. Freemasons we ...

European settlement of Australia commenced in 1788. Prior to this,Indigenous Australians inhabited the continent and had unwritten laws, as documented in the case of the Yirrkala community. However, the Indigenous Australians did not have any form of political organization that Europeans could understand as being analogous to their own institutions, and the British could not find recognised leaders with the authority to sign treaties, so treaties were not signed (in contrast to British colonial practices in many areas of North America, Africa, New Zealand, etc.). The first test of "terra nullius" in Australia occurred with the decision of "R v Tommy"(Monitor, 28 November 1827), which indicated that the native inhabitants were only subject to English law where the incident concerned both natives and settlers. The rationale was that Aboriginal tribal groups already operated under their own legal systems. This position was further reinforced by the decisions of "R v Boatman or *** and Bulleyes" (Sydney G ...

It's cold and grey today in Abu Sir and Egypt herself is crying. The boys are sitting in their room drinking tea and I'm in my house listening to sad music. This may seem a bit extreme but Al Sorat Farm's best and oldest friend is on her way to the airport with Mohamed Said, on her way back to New Zealand (with a brief stop in Brisbane for a Bon Jovi concert...don't forget that, Kelly!) Kelly and I met online probably about fifteen or so years ago on a great equestrian list, Equine-L, from the days of the old listservs. She first came to Egypt in 2000, on her way around the world, a holiday that she'd been saving for years for. She traveled throughout North America and Europe visiting friends that she'd only known online and when she came to Egypt it was my turn. I picked her up at a hotel in Dokki and brought her out to my current neighbourhood on one of those magical silky Egyptian nights. A group of us went out riding in the countryside on a bunch of happy Arab horses who totally surprised her with h . ...

Main article: Halloween around the world The traditions and importance of Halloween vary greatly among countries that observe it. In Scotland and Ireland, traditional Halloween customs include children dressing up in costume going "guising", holding parties, while other practices in Ireland include lighting bonfires, and having firework displays. In Brittany children would set candles in skulls in graveyards. Mass transatlantic immigration in the 19th century popularized Halloween in North America, and celebration in the United States and Canada has had a significant impact on how the event is observed in other nations. This larger North American influence, particularly in iconic and commercial elements, has extended to places such as South America, Australia, New Zealand, (most) continental Europe, Japan, and other parts of East Asia. In the Philippines, on the night of Halloween, Filipinos return to their hometowns and purchase candles and flowers, in preparation for the following All Saints Day and All ...
Economy In Crisis Your Economic Report - Daily October 22, 2013 The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Will Mean The End Of America As We Know It! Our leaders are leading us down a path that will end with the destruction of the American economy and sovereignty as we know it! Through the use of "free trade" agreements our leaders and Congress are systematically handing over our nation's wealth to not only foreign countries like China, but also to corporations. In fact, many say that if President Obama succeeds in passing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) many of the comforts and freedoms average Americans enjoy will be trampled on to accommodate huge corporations. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a "free trade agreement" set to be finalized in October of 2013, even if President Obama has to utilize his fast track authority to assure the implementation of this harmful agreement that will bridge together a handful of countries - Australia, The United States, Japan, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, ...

Cricket moves out of England Cricket was introduced to North America via the English colonies in the 17th century,[3] probably before it had even reached the north of England. In the 18th century it arrived in other parts of the globe. It was introduced to the West Indies by colonists[3] and to India by British East India Company mariners in the first half of the century. It arrived in Australia almost as soon as colonisation began in 1788. New Zealand and South Africa followed in the early years of the 19th century.[4] Cricket never caught on in Canada, despite efforts by an imperial-minded elite to promote the game as a way of identifying with the British Empire. Canada, unlike Australia and the West Indies, witnessed a continual decline in the popularity of the game during 1860–1960. Linked to upper class British-Canadian elites, the game never became popular with the general public. In the summer season it had to compete with baseball. During the First World War, Canadian units stationed in Britain ...

The Best and the Worst Times to Trade Forex One of the biggest plusses that the foreign exchange market offers traders consists of the fact that currencies trade twenty four hours a day, five days a week. This means that you can start trading Sunday afternoon EST and continue trading non stop all the way until Friday afternoon EST. This round the clock trading feature gives traders with workaholic tendencies a perfect market place in which to operate. The reason this opportunity exists has to do with time zones and where markets open in different parts of the world. For example, because the day begins in the Far East, the forex market opens in New Zealand, Australia and Asia first, then Europe and then North America. Nevertheless, poor times to trade also exist, and so the sections below will cover the forex market's time table and the best and worst times to trade. All times mentioned will be expressed in Eastern Standard Time or EST. World Forex Markets Time Table The foreign exchange market opens with ...
Had to post this What professional team has the best winning percentage? Answer The greatest ever sports team in ANY sport would have to be the New Zealand All Blacks, rugby's most successful team ever. In over a hundred years of rugby, the All Blacks hold an 84% winning record against all opposition played. They have also won 74% of all test matches played, and hold a winning record against EVERY TEST NATION IN THE WORLD (including the British & Irish Lions, and the World XV). Romania (the best team in Eastern Europe), Canada (the best team in North America), Japan (the best in Asia), and other World Rugby Heavyweights Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Argentina, Samoa, and Fiji have never beaten New Zealand. The average margin when playing the All Blacks is 25-12- that is, they have scored more than twice the amount of points than all opposition combined. New Zealand is so good, that they have never been ranked lower than 3rd on the World Rankings. In 1987, they were crowned the first ever Rugby World Champions ...
Tattoo For other uses, see Tattoo (disambiguation). A tattoo is a form of body modification, made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. The first written reference to the word, "tattoo" (or Samoan "Tatau") appears in the journal of Joseph Banks (24 February 1743 – 19 June 1820), the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour: "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition". The word "tattoo" was brought to Europe by the explorer James Cook, when he returned in 1771 from his first voyage to Tahiti and New Zealand. In his narrative of the voyage, he refers to an operation called "tattaw". Before this it had been described as scarring, painting, or staining.[1] Whole back tattoo, USA 2007 A trompe-l'œil spider tattoo Tattooing has been practiced for centuries in many cultures, particularly in Asia, and spread throughout the world.[citation needed] The Ainu, an indigenous people ...
This weekend the Confederations Cup, aka "mini World Cup" begins. It always takes place 1 year before the actual tournament in the same host country, involving the reigning champions of all continents to compete against each other. The 8 teams participating are Brazil- host, Mexico - champion of North America, Italy- finished 2nd in Europe but qualifies due to Spain already qualified through wining the World Cup, Japan - champions of Asia, Spain- world and European champion, Uruguay - South America champion, Nigeria- champion of Africa and Tahiti - champion of Oceania, surprisingly beating New Zealand in order to qualify (they don't really count though, they are going to get destroyed). The teams I will go for are Japan and Uruguay, but if both of them fail I will go for Mexico and Nigeria.
"Lee-Roy" - From the French nickname le roi meaning "the king". It has been common as an English given name since the 19th century. "Brendon" - From Brendanus, the Latinized form of the Irish name Bréanainn which was derived from a Welsh word meaning "prince". Saint Brendan was a 6th-century Irish abbot who, according to legend, crossed the Atlantic and reached North America with 17 other monks. "Baird" - Baird is a common surname of primarily Scottish origins. An old legend says that the family obtained their lands in Scotland when one Baird rescued King William the Lion while he was being attacked by a wild boar. While the validity of that legend is unknown, the Baird family did obtain lands in Aberdeenshire. Today, many Bairds have migrated elsewhere and the family name can be found primarily in the United States, South Africa ,Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Remember The McDonalds McDLT? It was on their menu from (1985 to 1991). That was the best Burger in the History of McDonalds. Then they made something called the McLean Delux which was almost the same thing as a McDLT. Then they cancelled it. The Problem I have with McDonalds is that everytime they come out with a decent burger, they turn around and cancel it off the menu after a year or two. I went to McDonalds today to get the McAngus Delux and discovered it too is now cancelled. I had to leave and go to Burger King to get a Whopper w/Cheese . AND did you know that McDonalds still has the McDLT Outside of North America (U.S. & Canada). Since it was introduced in 1985, the McDLT has become McDonalds Franchise Best Known "signature" most popular Burger in places like Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, The Phillipines, Brazil and South Korea. . but they haven't sold it in North America since 1991.

The black currant (Ribes nigrum) is native to Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America, but some of the highest-quality black currants are cultivated in New Zealand because of the optimum growing conditions. Black currants developed a nickname of the "King of Berries" due to their potent antioxidant activity and powerful nutritional profile. The use of black currant fruit as an herbal medicine emerged in the Middle Ages. Now modern research recognizes various health attributes, particularly with vision health and promoting a healthy inflammation response. Already largely popular in Europe in the form of functional foods and beverages, black currant is catching on as a product worth supplementing into the daily American diet.resource (Berries for Life)
Volcano: A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from the magma chamber below the surface. Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust in the interiors of plates, e.g., in the East African Rift, the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "Plate hypothesis" volcanism.[1] Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so-called "hotspots", for exam ...

Bygone Times Captain James Cook (1728 - 1779) Cook was an 18th century explorer and navigator whose achievements in mapping the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography. As one of the very few men in the 18th century navy to rise through the ranks, Cook was particularly sympathetic to the needs of ordinary sailors. James Cook was born on 27 October 1728 in a small village near Middlesbrough in Yorkshire. His father was a farm worker. At the age of 17, Cook moved to the coast, settling in Whitby and finding work with a coal merchant. In 1755, Cook enlisted in the Royal Navy, serving in North America where he learnt to survey and chart coastal waters. In 1769, the planet Venus was due to pass in front of the Sun, a rare event visible only in the southern hemisphere. The British government decided to send an expedition to observe the phenomenon. A more secret motive was to search for the fabled southern continent. Cook was chosen as commander of the Whitby-b ...

Speed Stance provides an even balance between damage and speed, where the sword takes the form of two separate blades. Range Stance allows fast, long-range, but weaker attacks, with the sword being two blades chained together. Power Stance is the most powerful, but slowest style, w ...
Even to the educated (western) (non) Muslim audience the term Sharia law or Islamic law usually brings to mind barbaric, demeaning, medieval type practices such as stoning to death, cutting off hands, forced marriages, honour killings or the image of Muslim women wearing abayas with Niqabs , chadors , or Hijabs . Some of these images are further reinforced in popular discourses including literature and Hollywood (-like) movies to be found in popular literature or media. These accounts are often written in a compelling fashion in form of biographies evoking in the reader strong emotions of sympathy for the victim (Muslim women) and anger and frustration (directed at the men and institutions which uphold Shariah law) . With the significant presence of Muslims now permanently residing in liberal democracies in Western Europe , North America , Australia and New Zealand some of these peculiarly ‘Islamic’ practices ,especially the face-veil wearing Muslim women, are at times further entrenched in the minds ...
Technically they are referred to as tectonic plates, between the 7 major tectonic plates they cover most of the earth's surface except for where a few smaller ones exist. Because they cover such a large area the borders of each plate won't correspond to any specific counrty or reference point that can easily be referred to as a particular plates location. Antarctic Plate - covers Antarctica and much of the far Southern Ocean area 3. Indo-Australian Plate - stretches through Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and on to the Canary Islands 4. Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence enters her fourth week on a hunger strike outside the Canadian capital building, thousands of protesters in Los Angeles, London, Minneapolis and New York City, voice their support. Spence and the protesters of the Idle No More Movement are drawing attention to some deplorable conditions in Native communities, and recently passed legislation C-45, which sidesteps most Canadian environmental laws. Put it this way, before the passage of Bill C-45, 2.6 million rivers, lakes and a good portion of Canada’s three ocean shorelines were protected under the Navigable Waters Act, now only eighty-seven are protected. That’s just the beginning of the problem, which seems to have not drawn much attention by the general public. "Flash mob" protests with traditional dancing and drumming have erupted in dozens of shopping malls across North America, marches and highway blockades by aboriginal groups across Canada and supporters have emerged from as far away as New Zealand and the Midd ...
A counterculture (also written counter-culture) is a subculture whose values and norms of behavior deviate from those of mainstream society, often in opposition to mainstream cultural mores.[1][2] A countercultural movement expresses the ethos, aspirations, and dreams of a specific population during a well-defined era. When oppositional forces reach critical mass, countercultures can trigger dramatic cultural changes. Prominent examples of countercultures in Europe and North America include Romanticism (1790-1840), Bohemianism (1850-1910), the more fragmentary counterculture of the Beat Generation (1944-1964), the Hippie counterculture (1964-1974) and Hipsterism (1990s-2010s).[3] Definition and characteristics The term counterculture is attributed to Theodore Roszak,[3][4][5] author of The Making of a Counter Culture.[6] It became prominent in the news media amid the social revolution that swept North and South America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand during the 1960s and early 1970s.[1] ...

On the Kyoto Protocol: The second commitment period, which will start on January 1, 2013 for a duration of eight years, encompasses commitments for a total of 18% in emissions reductions compared to 1990 (minus the offsets and loopholes, of course). Only the EU, Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have targets, however. By 2014, they are expected to submit proposals on how they might increase ambition and improve on these targets. The U.S., Canada, Russia, Japan and New Zealand will not take part in the second period. They will also no longer have access to the CDM (which incidentally can now also support CCS projects). A major stumbling block in Doha was the issue of “hot ...

(Dan Burn-Forti)There is, as Dorothy so eloquently put it, no place like home. Especially at Christmas, and especially for the five hardworking members of Britain's most popular boy band, as they reveal to Parade. After a year in which they toured the U.K. and Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, and 21 cities in North America; landed a spot at the Olympics closing ceremony; and recorded a new album, the lads of One Direction are looking forward to some downtime with family and friends. "I'll probably go home to Ireland and do the same thing as every year: drink, eat, and sleep a lot," says Niall Horan, 19. "Just chill out, become fat. We always go to the pub on Christmas Eve." "It's the Christmas dinner," says Harry Styles, 18, who tackles the holiday with a Jagger-esque swagger. "You go in hard. Then about 7 o'clock, watching a film, you make a turkey sandwich." Enter for a Chance to Meet One Direction! Since forming in 2010 for season seven of Britain's "The X Factor" (they finished third), One Directi ...
After performing at Hope for Haiti telethon, MTV News, stated the singer will feature the cast of Glee on the forthcoming tour.[4] The gesture was a show of appreciation for the episode featuring Madonna's hits. This information was later followed by fansite DrownedMadonna releasing a proposed tour itinerary from Live Nation.[5] The report showed the singer playing a stadium-exclusive tour beginning in New Zealand. It also showed dates in Australia, China, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. Days later, many media outlets around the world posted the itinerary, causing Live Nation to respond to the report's authenticity.[6] While promoting her first feature film, W.E., Madonna partnered with Smirnoff to produce a global dance contest. Called the "Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project", the contest asked for dancers to submit footage to becoming a dancer on the singer's forthcoming tour.[7] Eleven finalists performed for Madonna and fans at the Roseland Ballroom in November 2011, where Madonna also debu ...

Edward Liu The culture of Guanxi politics, influence-peddling, and "pay to play" is endemic and systemic for all forms of government. Whether one-party rule, a red aristocracy, a multi-party electoral system. Fact is political leaders and their family members and relatives are vulnerable to being bribed and corrupted by the lure of money, gifts, business partnerships in exchange for "guanxi," access, and patronage. I don't for moment doubt that Wen Jiabao (Grandpa Wen) did not know what was going on. Every single one of China's top echelons all the way to the top at Zhongnanhai, in the class of princelings, the red aristocracy, are peddling "guanxi" and monetizing their "guanxi" and ability to make things happen in China, Inc. whether through the front door, the side door, the back door, or the overhead door. And ethnic Chinese business tycoons in HongKong, Macau, and overseas in Singapore, Southeast Asia, North America, the UK, and Australia-New Zealand took advantage of this "guanxi" culture. Every sing ...

National Fluffernutter Sandwich Day honors a tradition that goes back to before WWI. School lunches packed at home with peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwiches. Take one with you to work today for a little nostalgia. And a sugar rush. It's Thanksgiving Day in The Great White North. In honor of Columbus Day it's the National Day of Mourning for Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. On a lighter note it's also National Depression Screening Day. It's the Christian Feast Day of three Saints named Pelagia one of whom was a virgin martyr and one who most definitely was not. On this day in history in 1582 this day also didn't happen in Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain, in 1645 the first hospital in North America opened, in 1769 Cook reached New Zealand, in 1818 boxing gloves were used for the first time, in 1860 the first telegraph message was sent from LA to San Francisco, in 1871 the Great Chicago Fire started, in 1896 the Dow Jones Average was created, in 1904 Edmonton and Price Albert were incorporat ...
India's rich grab Australian assets, new visas may help The Jindal family, ranked among the world's top 80 richest by Forbes, in May bought two minor stakes, worth a total of A$26 million (US$26.99 million), in Australian iron ore and coal mines through Jindal Steel & Power. That followed a US$2 billion purchase by Indian self-made billionaire and college-dropout Gautam Adani of a coal mine in the state of Queensland last year. Silverneedle Hospitality, a company backed by Nadathur S. Raghavan, an Indian philanthropist and co-founder of software company Infosys Technologies, just bought a hotel in Brisbane for A$57 million. Last year, it bought a chain of about 60 hotels in Australia and New Zealand for an undisclosed sum. "In the last six to nine months, there has been a lot of private investment into Australia because it is seen as a safe-haven," said Paul Dowling, principal analyst at banking research firm East & Partners. interesting Stuff: Kinect is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game console and Windows PCs. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands.[9] The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical gamer base.[10] Kinect competes with the Wii Remote Plus and PlayStation Move with PlayStation Eye motion controllers for the Wii and PlayStation 3 home consoles, respectively. A version for Windows was released on February 1, 2012.[7] Kinect was launched in North America on November 4, 2010,[2] in Europe on November 10, 2010,[3] in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on November 18, 2010,[5][11][12] and in Japan on November 20, 2010.[13] Purchase options for the sensor peripheral include a bundle with the game Kinect Adventures and console bundles with either a ...
Some seem to have the incorrect notion the Pork isn't eaten in the UK. A side of unsliced bacon is a "flitch" or "slab bacon", while an individual slice of bacon is a "rasher" (United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand) or simply a "slice" or "strip" (North America). Slices of bacon are also known as "collops". Traditionally, the skin is left on the cut and is known as "bacon rind". Rindless bacon, however, is quite common. In the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, bacon comes in a wide variety of cuts and flavours, and is predominantly known as "streaky bacon", or "streaky rashers". Bacon made from the meat on the back of the pig is referred to as "back bacon" and is part of traditional full breakfast commonly eaten in Britain and Ireland. In the United States, back bacon may also be referred to as "Canadian-style Bacon" or "Canadian Bacon".[11]

This should be headline news. Dr. John Apsley reported on the far-reaching effects of radiation in the environment. The problem with radioactive contamination is that it sticks around for so long and accumulates in food sources, he explained, noting the fallout from the Fukushima disaster that blanketed the U.S. West Coast was magnitudes higher than anyone expected. It will effect North America for three centuries, Apsley added. He estimated the Fukushima disaster will ultimately be to blame for the deaths of one to seven million people over the next 20 years, and perhaps even more. Low doses of radiation amplify toxins in environment that cause cancer and other diseases, he said. Apsley recommended smoothies made from select mushroom blends and whey (from the East Coast or New Zealand) to counteract the negative health consequences of radiation in the body. He also revealed how Japan is ruining their food supply of seaweed and fish by dumping radioactive waste into their waters, as well as how the island ...

Fortnight is a unit of time equal to fourteen days, or two weeks. The word derives from the Old English fēowertyne niht, meaning "fourteen nights".[1][2] Fortnight and fortnightly are commonly used words in Britain and many Commonwealth countries such as Australia, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan, where many wages and salaries and most Social Security benefits are paid on a fortnightly basis.[3] The word is rarely used in North America, except regionally in Canada and in insular traditional communities (e.g. Amish) in the United States. American and Canadian payroll systems may use the term biweekly in reference to pay periods every two weeks. Neither term should be confused with semimonthly (in one year there are 26 fortnightly or biweekly versus 24 semimonthly pay periods).
