Jeter wins it for Yanks in home farewell The Associated Press Logo Alt Sep 25th 2014 11:15PM BY MIKE FITZPATRICK AP SPORTS WRITER NEW YORK (AP) -- The perfect script. Derek Jeter capped his Yankee Stadium farewell with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, the latest - and perhaps last - storybook moment in his charmed and illustrious career, to give New York a 6-5 victory Thursday night over the Baltimore Orioles. Serenaded with adoring chants that echoed through the Bronx night, Jeter tipped his cap several times at shortstop and drove in three runs. He launched an early double off the left-center wall and saved the best for last, a sharp, opposite-field single to right that knocked in the Winning Run. During the raucous celebration that followed, Jeter said he's played his final game at shortstop, but he'll likely play in some capacity this weekend in Boston. It appeared Jeter's tiebreaking grounder in the seventh would be the swing that sent the Yankees to a victory when they built ...
NEW YORK - (AP) -- When Derek Jeter puts on New York's navy pinstripes Thursday for one final home game, it won't matter to a packed Yankee Stadium that there's no postseason play on the line. Teammates. Friends. Family. Fans. They will all be there for only one reason: to thank the captain. "I think (Thursday) will be the culmination of all the love he has been shown and all the appreciation he has been shown this year and his career," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think it'll be something we'll remember for a long time." After a season-long farewell tour around the Major Leagues, the New York Yankees -- weather permitting -- will play one last home game with No. 2 as their shortstop. If the first seven games of the team's final homestand of 2014 is any indication, Jeter is in for a sendoff not seen at the Ballpark in the Bronx since perhaps Mickey Mantle retired. Fans have stood with each and every at-bat, taking pictures and videos with their phones and cameras while chanting "Der-ek Je-ter!" an ...
Barring rain, tonight is Derek Jeter's last game ever at Yankee Stadium. It's also the first game he playing in the Bronx that has no implications on his team's playoff chances...ever. Jeter was the model captain, the king of clutch (Shout out to you Chris Wayland) and perhaps most importantly the ideal citizen. New York is a city defined by many historic buildings, events and figures, but in my mind no one has embodied the city in the past two decades in the way Jeter has. Perhaps nothing expresses his leadership qualities as much as the fact that in his 20 year career with the Yankees he was never once ejected from a game. Derek Jeter never won a regular season MVP, but nonetheless was the driving force behind many of the Yankees greatest playoff pushes and subsequent World Series titles. Of all the great sports plays in history, few stand out to me like the famous flip against the A's and his Mr. October homerun, a homerun that was ultimately futile in the Yankees pursuit of the World Series against th ...
Listen, I'm not a huge Derek Jeter fan, but facts are facts: He's been a great Yankee and New Yorkers idolize him. He and the franchise mean a whole lot to MLB. It's rainy and chilly in New York today, Jeter's last scheduled game set for Yankee Stadium tonight. People have paid thousands of dollars for tickets. MLB needs to find a way to get this game in, even if it's played in drizzle throughout. If unplayable conditions, the game SHOULD be made up Monday afternoon, and will be, if it means anything to Baltimore's home-field situation in the playoffs. But even if it means nothing, it SHOULD be made up in tribute to Jeter and his fans! Even if the Orioles played every scrub they had including pitchers. I understand the O's would not want to risk injury to any of their regulars for a meaningless game to them, but this game SHOULD be played. Jeter and the Yankees, love 'em or hate 'em, deserve this!
Dear New York Weather, please allow there to be a game at Yankee Stadium tomorrow for Derek Jeter. We came a long way & are ready to cheer.

Some of you know how big of a baseball fan I am. It is a goal of mine to get to every stadium, and I am lucky enough to have a job that affords me the opportunity to travel all over the country. More often than not I make sacrifices in my Personal Life to further my career. Baseball and Bourbon Hunting are the 2 ways I keep my sanity while being stuck on the road so much. As of last week I've been to 16 stadiums, the latest being Comerica Park in Detroit MI. By the end of the season (September 28th) I will be up to 19. Just booked a trip to Denver 8/19 to watch the Rockies face the Royals. I have an event in Baltimore in early September and will be there a day early to catch the Orioles face the Reds...and I just booked my flight to New York to watch Derek Jeter's final home game at Yankee Stadium on 9/25 against the Orioles...and it will be my first time in New York City. Brendan Rodgers has revealed he has challenged Jordan Henderson to become a regular name on the scoresheet this season. The midfielder netted in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Manchester City in New York on Wednesday night - a game the Reds ultimately won on penalties. Rodgers explained how he has been working with Henderson to try and offer another dimension to his team's offensive capabilities in the forthcoming campaign. "That's the objective for Jordan [to get more goals]," the manager told his post-match press conference at Yankee Stadium. "The finish he produced to get the equaliser, he does that day in, day out in training. "He's a player that is so fit and strong, and he's such a team player - he does a lot of unselfish work. This year we're asking him to get more into the box. "I thought he had more opportunities when he played just around the corner [of the striker] in the last 20 minutes of the game - he was able to time his runs better going forward and he got in a few times. A Guy Is Suing ESPN For Making Fun of Him When He Fell Asleep at a Yankees Game ESPN devoted about 90 seconds to 26-year-old Andrew Rector of New York back in April, which is the amount of time usually reserved for LeBron James getting a new haircut. Andrew was at Yankee Stadium for a game against the Boston Red Sox, and FELL ASLEEP during the fourth inning. The cameras caught him sleeping, and then stayed on him. So the two commentators started talking about him. They referred to him as, "oblivious" and made fun of him for sleeping. The clip went a tiny bit viral, and Internet commenters also made fun of him, which is what Internet commenters do. So naturally, Andrew just filed a $10 million LAWSUIT against ESPN and Major League Baseball for disparaging him and leading to a, "unending verbal crusade." He says he was called things like "fatty" and "stupid" and attributes those to the ESPN commentators in the lawsuit, but actually, those are things random *** on the Internet said about him. Today In Black History RiP Louis Armstrong • July 6, 1914 Viola Davis Desmond, businesswoman and civil libertarian, was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Desmond wished to train as a beautician but was not allowed to in Halifax because of her race. Therefore, she trained in Montreal, Atlantic City, and New York. After training, Desmond returned to Halifax and started her hair salon. She also established The Desmond School of Beauty Culture, to train other Black females, and Vi’s Beauty Products. While on a business trip in 1946, Desmond’s car broke down in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and she was told that the repair would take a day. As a result, she decided to see a movie. At the ticket counter, Desmond requested a ticket for a seat on the main floor and believing that was what she was given took a seat on the main floor. Subsequently, the manager of the theater approached her and informed her that it was against their policy to sell a main floor ticket to a Black person and she should move to the ...

June 22 is a pertinent date in the Joe Louis story. in 1937 'The Brown Bomber' began his record 11 year championship reign when he toppled the famous 'Cinderella Man' James J. Braddock in 8 rounds in Chicago. But, probably the defining fight of his career came in 1938 when he absolutely annihilated his sole conqueror Max Schmeling inside a round at New York's Yankee Stadium.
The 1958 National Football League Championship Game was played on December 28, 1958 at Yankee Stadium in New York City. It was the first National Football League (NFL) playoff game to go into sudden death overtime. The final score was Baltimore 23, New York 17. The game has since become widely known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played". The game was the 26th annual NFL championship game. Both teams finished the 1958 season with a 9–3 record. For the Giants, it was their fifth consecutive winning season, a stretch that included an NFL Championship in 1956. In contrast, 1958 was only the second winning season in Colts' history since the team's founding in 1953. Baltimore started off the season winning their first six games before losing to New York, 24–21, in week 7 of the regular season. However, Colts starting quarterback Johnny Unitas was injured at the time and did not play in the game. Two weeks later, Unitas returned to lead the Colts to a critical come-from-behind win against Hall Of Fame quarterba ...

A good day in the Bronx, the date of Mickey Mantle's first ever Yankee Stadium Home Run In an 11-3 beating of Cleveland in 1951. And Billy Martin would have been 86 this day. But although it goes off the rails a bit to view this as a highlight, I prefer to feature the Copa Cabana incident on May 16, 1957, involving those two iconic guys, and more. It seems "of a time," THE decade where baseball in New York was the pinnacle of all aspects of life. Or so I would like to believe. YANKEE BASEBALL!!!

No reason for me to say “I told you so” because the following update by New York Post baseball columnist Joel Sherman says it all. Maybe it wasn’t the AL East or the short porch of Yankee Stadium or the pressure of New York. Maybe it was just Phil Hughes. Hughes has made three starts for the Twins and given up four runs in five innings in each. The result is a 7.20 ERA, which is fourth worst in the early season among qualifiers. Once more the righty has the good strikeout-to-walk ratio (17-to-5) that continues to entice clubs and he actually hasn’t been destroyed by homers (just two so far). But the high pitch counts and the inability to limit damage have continued to keep Hughes’ outings brief and ineffective. Hughes, who signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Twins even after going 4-14 with a 5.19 ERA in his Yankees walk year, is not fooling anyone. The opposition is hitting .317 against him with a .916 OPS. He has not pitched beyond the fifth inning in his past eight starts dating to ...

The Great Smoke Off By Shel Silverstein Now in the laid back California town of sunny San Rafael Lived a girl named Pearly Sweetcake, you prob’ly knew her well. She’d been stoned fifteen of her eighteen years and the story was widely told That she could smoke 'em faster than anyone could roll. Her legend finally reached New York, that Grove Street walk-up flat Where dwelt The Calistoga Kid, a beatnik from the past He'd been rolling dope since time began, now he took a cultured toke, And said, “Jim, I can roll ‘em faster, than any chick can smoke!” So a note gets sent to San Rafael, “For the Championship of the World The Kid demands a smoke off!” "Well, bring him on!" says Pearl, "I'll grind his fingers off his hands, he'll roll until he drops!" Says Calistog, "I'll smoke that chick till she blows up and pops!” So they rent out Yankee Stadium and the word is quickly spread "Come one, come all, who walk or crawl, tickets just two lids a head And from every town and hamlet, over land and sea th ...

Manchester City will take on Liverpool at New York's Yankee Stadium this summer as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup. Manchester United also announced plans to play Serie A pair Roma and Inter Milan in the same tournament, although their plans remain dependent on the potential need to play qualifiers in European competition. City will also face AC Milan and Olympiacos in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis respectively as part of the eight-team tournament which takes place across the United States. However, the return to Yankee Stadium - where City beat Chelsea 5-3 in May - stands out as the club prepare for the full launch of their New York City FC Major League Soccer franchise in 2015. What are the chances? As far as I know this is the first time it has happened. My Bawdy Pacas came into the new season looking for better luck, after a brutal Division in their last season. Their AL Central in the new season includes a Cincinnati team by the same Owner who won the Division in their last season and went on to win the World Series. That Owner has 94 SIM Baseball Championships. San Diego in BP's new AL Central is conducted by an Owner with 12 Championships. My 2 Championships must barely get their notice. The remaining team, another New York team, is Owned by a true Newbie. Of course, that means he is unknown, not necessarily easy. His team plays in new Yankee Stadium. BP are based at Citi Field. The new NY Yankee chartered a 787 Dreamliner (at the age of 25!) for 5 PAX and a poodle...sounds like an Eos charter :) NEW YORK (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka was introduced by the Yankees on Tuesday after chartering a Boeing 787 Dreamliner for his trip from Tokyo to New York. The 25-year-old right-hander agreed Jan. 22 to a $155 million, seven-year contract and stopped in New York for a news conference at Yankee Stadium en route to the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., where workouts start this weekend. Tanaka put on his No. 19 jersey and, speaking in English, said "I'm very happy to be a Yankee." Tanaka charted the Japan Airlines plane, which seats about 200, at what was reported to be a cost of about $200,000 for a flight said to include five passengers and his poodle Haru.

Mandela, Self-Declared Yankee, Gets Plaque in Monument Park***VERY incredible article! During a triumphant visit by Nelson Mandela to New York in June 1990, shortly after he had been released from a South African prison, one of his most memorable stops was a rally and concert at Yankee Stadium, where he put on a team cap and jacket and proclaimed, “I am a Yankee.” Major League Baseball To commemorate that moment and the life of Mandela, the South African leader who died last week at 95, the Yankees will place a plaque in Monument Park. It will be unveiled on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, when the Yankees play the Chicago Cubs. Robinson, the three popes who have visited the stadium and the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks are other non-Yankees to be honored at Monument Park, beyond the center-field wall. Pope Paul VI led a Mass at the stadium in 1965, Pope John Paul II did so in 1979, and Pope Benedict XVI led one in 2008. The idea to honor Mandela came from Service Employees International Union Local ...
Jay-z took cono away from the Yankees 😂, what kinda New York love is that... He better not show his face in Yankee stadium.

If you ever got to see Mariano Rivera pitch live in Yankee Stadium, you are truly blessed. I always wanted to, but most unfortunately, I never got that chance. All the times I've been to the games, we were either way ahead, or behind, so they didn't need him to close for a save. I know it's over, and he's done, but since we're not going to the postseason, if I could have one wish, it would be that Mo would come back for one more season. baseball in the 9th will never be the same again, without Enter The Sandman playing. Thanks for all the great memories Mariano, you truly are a class act. Now, I'm going to go listen to Frankie Sinatra sing New York, New York, and have a good cry. Exit Sandman.
Did you hear about Metallica's blistering performance in New York last weekend? It was one for the ages. They rocked Yankee Stadium to pay tribute to New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera during his retirement ceremony. Check out the band preforming 'Enter Sandman' here:
Yankees Lose To Rays 8-3 And Miss Playoffs by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS September 25, 201311:17 PM NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees failed to make the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, getting mathematically eliminated Wednesday night during an 8-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Evan Longoria homered twice as the Rays won their sixth straight and lowered to three their magic number over Texas for clinching an AL wild-card berth. Slowed by age and hobbled by injury, the Yankees (82-76) were chased with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Cleveland Indians completed a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Despite baseball's highest opening-day payroll at $230 million, the Yankees failed to claim one of the 10 playoff berths. "We didn't get to where we wanted to get," manager Joe Girardi said after it was over. Since starting the latest run of success in 1995, New York had missed the playoffs only in 2008 — when the team bid goodbye to old Yankee Stadium. This time, the Yankees ar ...

Pine Tar: The Untold Story The bat boy tells his version of the pine-tar tale involving George Brett and the Yankees. By DANIEL BARBARISI On Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, George Brett will hold a news conference to talk about the most famous moment in his Hall-of-Fame career: the Pine-Tar Game. Yet absent from that news conference will be a 47-year-old New York cop named Merritt Riley, who feels personally responsible for the pine-tar debacle. "I really believe the Pine-Tar Game would never have happened if I hadn't done what I did," said Riley. Speaking publicly for the first time ever about his role in the Pine-Tar Game—which took place 30 years ago this month—Riley said, "I remember it happening like it was yesterday." On that day—July 24, 1983—Riley was a 17-year-old Yankee Stadium bat boy assigned to serve the visiting Kansas City Royals. His job: When a Royal hit the ball, grab the bat immediately, run it back to the Kansas City dugout and toss it in a rack among the other bats. But in the top ...

After inheriting 2 baserunners with no outs, bringing a save opportunity back into play, Greg Holland collected his 21st save of the season in Kansas City's 5-1 win over New York. In one of his most impressive performances to date, facing a hostile crowd in the Bronx, and a no-out Bases Loaded jam after giving up a a shallow single, Holland reached back and struck out 3 Yankee hitters in succession in the bottom of the 9th to end the game. In converting his 14th straight save chance, Holland demonstrated his dominance as the game's best strikeout pitcher as he lowered his ERA to 1.85, with a 0.94 WHIP, and added to his incredible (insane as ESPN described it) 59:11 K to walk ratio in 33.0 innings pitched. With this performance in Yankee Stadium, in front of a team in search of a closer next season that is known for pushing player contracts through the roof, Holland may have further established himself as THE closer in the greatest demand at the end of this season!!
Today in Baseball History -- July 8 -- from Mary Landers 1912 -- At Chicago's West Side Grounds, Giants southpaw Rube Marquard's consecutive winning streak is stopped at 19 when the Cubs defeat New York, 7-2. The future Hall Of Famer will finish the season with a league-leading 26 victories for the eventual NL champs. 1935 -- The American League's winning streak reaches three as the Junior Circuit beats the NL in All Star action at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, 4-1. The rule that no pitcher can throw more than three innings unless the game goes extra innings will be instituted after Yankee Lefty Gomez pitches six outstanding innings in the Midsummer Classic. 1939 -- Prior to the first game of a doubleheader with the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, a wall of Japanese beetles forms in front of the home dugout. Although over 5000 insects will be captured, the problem will return later in the month. 1941 -- Thanks to a dramatic two-out, bottom of the ninth inning, three-run Home Run by Red Sox outfielder Ted Wi ...

Hi everyone. Matt Baker here with a question: How did New York City lose its title as boxing mecca? For years, Madison Square Garden was the ultimate venue for boxing (though there were many great clubs and arenas where major boxing events were held, including Yankee Stadium). But, in the last few decades, Las Vegas has so utterly pervaded the boxing world, the sport has all but forgotten about New York. How and why did this happen? I'm seeking the opinion of anyone and everyone who may have the answer, or even part of an answer. Thank you.
Come next spring, baseball fans may be able to visit their favorite Major League venue without ever leaving Batesville. Construction is currently under way at Batesville North Complex for seven new baseball fields that are scaled-down replicas of seven Major League Baseball parks. According to Gary Hibner of Stonebridge Construction in Jonesboro, the new fields will be replicas of Chase Field in Phoenix; Wrigley Field in Chicago; Yankee Stadium in New York; Busch Stadium in St. Louis; Comercia Park in Detroit; Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas; and Fenway Park in Boston. Although the new facilities won’t be available this season, construction at North Complex is progressing well, said Hibner. The new baseball complex will be located at the former Independence County Youth Athletic Association’s soccer fields, and a new soccer complex is under way approximately 1 mile south of that location on East Main Street near the Miller Creek area.

The Dodgers and Pirates wrap up their three-game series as Los Angeles plays the third contest of a nine-game road trip (1-1). Following the game today, the squad will head to New York for an off day Monday and then their first-ever regular season series at Yankee Stadium (two games). The club will finish the road trip with four games at PETCO Park in San Diego. In addition to airing on PRIME TICKET, today’s game will be broadcast nationally on TBS and called by Matt Devlin, Cal Ripken Jr. and John Smoltz. The Dodgers have won six straight series over the Pirates, including a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium this season from April 5-7. The last series lost to the Bucs came when the club dropped two of three in its season-opening series in 2010.
Juan Mata was on target as Spain won their final warm-up match before the Confederations Cup which begins this weekend. The Chelsea man added the second goal in a 2-0 win over Republic of Ireland in the Yankee Stadium in New York, where he played for Chelsea last month. Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta, who started Spain's previous warm-up game, remained on the bench on this occasion, Mata came on for Xavi on 69 minutes, moments after Roberto Soldado put his side ahead. Spain hit woodwork in the first half but Ireland were tough to break down in the face of much possession for their opponents, and they had the ball in the net through Sean St Ledger on 81 minutes, only to be denied by an offside flag. Mata made the win certain with two minutes left on the clock with a first-time finish from a Santi Cazorla pass, having twice been involved earlier in the move. It was a quality goal. Spain open their Confederations Cup campaign on Sunday in Brazil against Uruguay, before taking on Tahiti and Nigeria. MO ...
Fernando Torres doesn't think the return of manager Jose Mourinho to Chelsea will affect his future with the Premier League side. Speaking on a conference call on Friday ahead of Spain's friendlies in the US against Haiti and Ireland, Torres said Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge is "great news" for the club and that it will not alter his plans to finish out his deal. "I have three more years on my contract so I am not worried. I know my future is there," Torres said. "To be honest, it is like this every summer. There is talk and speculation. But as I said when I signed my contract, I will be there for five-and-a-half seasons. My future is there, and my present is with the national team." Spain have topped the Fifa rankings for 20 straight months and shouldn't have much trouble against No 63 Haiti in Miami on Saturday as the world and European champion prepares for the Confederations Cup in Brazil. Spain play Ireland on Tuesday in another friendly, at New York's Yankee Stadium. They open the Confederat ...

Early miscue sets tone as rallying Indians fall. Michael Bourn glided in as he usually does, preparing to make a routine catch in center field in the first inning for the Indians. That is when the baseball that soared from Robinson Cano's bat glanced off the glove of the outfielder and dropped to the grass. It was a rare gaffe for one of the game's best defenders. The error was also symbolic of the way things have been going these days for the Indians. Bourn's miscue helped the Yankees to an early outburst, which proved sufficient in sending Cleveland to a 6-4 loss at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The defeat completed a three-game sweep at the hands of New York and marked the Tribe's fourth loss in a row. It was Indians right-hander Corey Kluber who was on the wrong end of the loss -- the 12th in the past 16 games for the struggling Tribe. Kluber finished strong for Cleveland, but the six runs he surrendered in the first two innings were too much for the club to overcome. The early onslaught for New York s ...

Coach of Spain (world and European champions) Vicente Del Bosque, last week sprang a surprise in his 23-man Confederations Cup squad, including Roberto Soldado, who had been expected to be omitted, and leaving out Beñat Extebarria and Javi García, as well as Xabi Alonso, who has been unable to shake off his groin injury. New York City FC will become Major League Soccer’s 20th expansion team in 2015 and it’s believed that the England midfielder could be the first marquee signing to land with the Big Apple’s newest outfit. “Barry mentioned he enjoyed his time in New York after City’s exhibition at Yankee Stadium against Chelsea,” writes Kyle Bonn on the Pro Soccer section of the website. Barry said: “The match in New York was a great spectacle and the supporters turned out in great numbers again,” said Barry after scoring in the 5-3 win over Chelsea at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. “It was about something other than the result. Summary of Day 2 in the Big Apple: We started off the day with a full island cruise of the city. It was wonderful, as we saw many landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, and the Statue of Liberty! We then went on a tour of Wall Street and visited the 9/11 Memorial, which was a beautiful dedication to those who lost their lives in 2001. We then visited the NYFD and rode the subway. After that, we rode the New York Skyride and did some souvenir shopping. Our final stop of the day was the Empire State Building, and we went up to the 86th floor to see the city in lights! Five was definitely the number of the day, as we saw all five boroughs of NYC on the cruise: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Also, from atop the Empire State Building, we could see five states: New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. We covered a lot of ground today, and we are all very tired. We're having a great time! Gotta get some rest tonight, so we can ...

Surprise! Red Sox and Yankees back on top By Nick Cafardo People who make predictions, like me, thought the Yankees and Red Sox would be fighting it out for fourth place right about now. We evidently underestimated the resolve of the Yankees and we underestimated how well a group of complementary players could blend with the Red Sox. Those are reasons the upcoming series in the Bronx is meaningful. Unlike the season-opening set at Yankee Stadium, when the Sox took two of three against a team learning to adjust to injuries, this series will be an old-fashioned Yankee-Red Sox rivalry with first place on the line. What was expected to be a Yankee collapse has turned into one of baseball’s best stories as New York has 13 comeback wins. And the Sox, winners of 69 games a year ago, have turned into a playoff contender. The Yankees have turned back the clock on players such as Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, and Travis Hafner while Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira have been on the ...

The New York Yankees paired up with the world's richest soccer club on Tuesday in a dramatic move that will see the iconic baseball franchise acquire Major League Soccer's newest team and potentially stage games at Yankee Stadium. MLS chiefs revealed that the Yankees and Manchester City, the 2012 English Premier League champion backed by the endless wealth of the Abu Dhabi royal family, will combine to own New York City Football Club, which is expected to begin MLS play in 2015. The intriguing prospect of the team sharing Yankee Stadium is a likely one, at least until the new organization finds or builds a stadium of its own. ''Yankee Stadium is an option, as are many places,'' Yankees president Randy Levine said. City's owners shelled out a record $100 million "franchise fee" to MLS for the rights to operate a team and will own a majority share, with the Yankees' stake amounting to around 25 percent. "We are pleased to be associated with this major move by MLS to increase its presence in the New York mar ...

From City & State First Read: When Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last week that he initially wants to allow only three full-fledged casinos, and to locate them in upstate New York, some lawmakers were disappointed that New York City and its popular Resorts World racetrack casino were left out of the mix. But it also raised questions about the state’s second most lucrative racetrack casino, the Empire City Casino in Yonkers, and whether its location qualifies as “upstate.” While the racino would likely be passed over in the governor’s “Phase One” casino plan, Yonkers City Council President Chuck Lesnick made the semantic argument that it should be considered. “My first question was, ‘Where is upstate?’ ” Lesnick said after Cuomo’s State of the State address. “One could say anything north of Yankee Stadium is upstate. In fact, when Phil Rizutto used to call those long Home Runs from Reggie Jackson for the Yankees, he would say, ‘He hit that ball upstate!’ Anything north of right fi ...

Baseball Jose lived in San Juan, and all he ever wanted was to see a baseball game in Yankee Stadium. Jose loved baseball; he loved the Yankees. He worked and saved and at long last bought a ticket, took a plane to New York. When he got to Yankee Stadium, it was all sold out. Not a seat to be had. Jose pleaded, touched the heart of the ticket office and they found him a seat way out in the bleachers behind the flag pole. Jose saw his baseball game and went back to Puerto Rico, flying so high he almost didn't need a plane. "Well, Jose," they asked when he returned, "how was it?" Jose raved. Tony Zale (Anthony Florian Zaleski ) (May 29, 1913 – March 20, 1997) was an American boxer. Zale was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, a steel town, which gave him his nickname, "Man of Steel." In addition, he had the reputation of being able to take fearsome punishment and still rally to win, reinforcing that nickname. Zale was known as a strong body puncher, who punished his opponents and steadily wore them down before knocking them out. Bouts against Rocky Graziano Zale was a 2-time world middleweight champion and made the Ring Magazine's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. Zale is best remembered for his three bouts over a 21-month period with Rocky Graziano for the middleweight crown. These three bouts were among the most brutal and exciting middleweight championship matches of all time. The first match took place in Yankee Stadium, New York. Zale had served in World War II, was thirty-three years old, and had been inactive for about four years. Graziano was on a winning knockout streak and ...
Meet Our Resident: Mike Byrne Born March 29, 1918, to Irish parents in midtown Manhattan's east side, Mike Byrne was the first of 10 children. Some of his early memories of growing up in New York include watching the Lindbergh ticker-tape parade, appearing in a violin concert at age 9, seeing the first hockey game at Madison Square Garden at 13, and frequenting Yankee Stadium for a 55-cent admission to see the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gherig and Tony Lazzeri. Mike loved to watch and play hockey, football and baseball more than he loved playing the violin, so his dad nixed the violin lessons. He recounted the emotional radio account of the flaming Hindenberg crash, lived through the repeal of Prohibition, the rise of Hitler and Mussolini, and the formation of the Rome/Berlin/Tokyo Axis powers. He was a neighbor (five blocks away) of Bruno Hauptman, the Lindbergh baby kidnapper. He remembers the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, where he watched Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Duke Wellington, Fats Waller, Lena Horne, .. ...

Newspaper story-around 1980-1..by Paul Post..Title..Hall Of Fame 'Stats' Go Beyond The Field.. New York- Jack Scarangella can play at Yankee Stadium anytime he wants, without ever being in the lineup. George Steinbrenner would never put him in pinstripes, yet he comes and goes without so much as a ticket stub. His days off will be lonier now that the season's over. But there's he'll be back in April when the Yanks take the field on Opening Day. To say Scarangella beats to a different drum is an understatement. He plays his own- on a world class scale with the likes of Bruce Springsteen. Through the years however, he's helped put alittle rhythm in the lives of former Yankees such as Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph, and Shane Rawley, all of whom have learned music from this part-time percussionist, full-time Yankee fan. '' Visiting players would come in and watch me and Ron drum, throughout the year. We'd put on Phil Collins to James Brown'' said Scarangella, a protege' of the late, but legendary Buddy Rich. '' ...

From the Baltimore Sun, a good attitude Whether the path of Nate McLouth's towering fly ball was interrupted by the right-field foul pole at Yankee Stadium will likely be discussed in Baltimore for years to come. But when it harmlessly fell into the second deck of seats as a foul ball, it was the beginning of the end to a season in which the Orioles forced the rest of baseball to take notice. The Orioles' first postseason in 15 years ended with frigid bats on a cold New York night, their unlikely trip to the playoffs ended abruptly with a 3-1 loss to the Yankees in a do-or-die Game 5 of the American League Division Series. A team that opened the season as a 75-to-1 long shot to win the AL pennant put itself one win away from playing in the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1997.

Well this was laugh week. Saw Lewis Black Wed. night the 10th. Jerry Seinfeld the 11th. Coming home from the Bronx where Jerry performed at Lehman College you have the subway stop for Yankee Stadium. So tons of people who had to leave before the game was over get on. This was at end of ninth inning and the game went thirteen innings. So this is New York, Seinfeld in the Bronx, Yankees in the Bronx and Barbra Streisand in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. Where else in the world is great stuff like this going on on one night of the week ? Ain't New York City and it's boroughs great. Plus I got a young drunk girl placed in my care at Penn Station who was going my way on train. She got off safely in Valley Stream. She threw up into to her huge purse. Never a dull moment...

The Houston Business Journal published a booklet on the 100th anniversary of Rice University. Lots of interesting history tidbits in there. A lot of it I knew. Here is something I never heard before now: 1962 -- Rice receives the ultimate alumni gift when John Cox, ’27, donates Yankee Stadium to his alma mater. Cox, owner of the venue through a 1955 stock acquisition, gives Rice all capital stock in the Major League Baseball stadium, then valued at $4.5 million, along with lucrative leasing rights. The university makes millions renting the House that Ruth Built to the New York Yankees over the next nine years, a dark period when the Bronx Bombers didn’t win a single pennant, much less a World Series. In 1966, Rice repaints the stadium blue and white. In 1971, the city of New York acquires Yankee Stadium by eminent domain and pays Rice a $2.5 million condemnation fee.

I have played in many stadiums, but to me there are only two special stadiums - Yankee Stadium in New York and Sanford Stadium in Athens, and there is no comparison between the two. There is no place in the world precisely like the grass that grows between the hedges in Athens, Georgia - Fran Tarkenton Take THAT every other stadium in college football!
Another great day in New York :-) we went to a Yankees Vs Athletics baseball game and the atmosphere was just amazing. Yankee Stadium is huge! We had a great view from 3rd Base and seen Nick Swisher score a smashing Home Run. So exciting!!! We then jumped on the subway and came home and it's now time to get some washing done!

Yankees are trend setters. Yankees win protection against terrorism -- but what did you lose? Ray Stubblebine / Reuters file New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, left, watches as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds fly in formation over Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Yankee fans root for a first-place team and usually watch their heroes win when they visit the new Yankee Stadium in New York. But fans of the Bronx Bombers have recently lost something too, something many sports fans around the country will probably lose soon: the right to sue the team for damages if there's a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, another team can claim victory every time the Yankees take the field -- tort reform advocates. In July, Yankee Stadium became the first sports facility to earn the coveted federal "Safety Act" designation. That means the facility has passed a battery of tests and won approval from the Department of Homeland Security, so the Yankees have been granted a wide-ranging immunity from future lawsuits that might stem fro ...

Just got back from the big lights of New York. What a city:) We took in as many highlights as our bodies would allow. Many adventures were had on the streets and subway. Got lost in Central Park (more than once), watched Lion King on Broadway (amazing), made it in to a taping of the David Letterman Show and ended our trip with a visit to Yankee Stadium to watch the "Bronx Bombers" take on the Red Sox. It’s my understanding the the proposed 2013 schedule has the Giants visiting the new Yankee Stadium for the first time. The Giants would spend an entire week in New York in September and play the Mets and Yankees. Also, the Red Sox would bring their fun, disfunctional family to San Francisco.
New York Yankees fans just amaze me! A four game series at Yankee Stadium against the Texas Rangers is said to be a big series! Well come October the Texas Rangers, LA Angels, or the Detroit Tigers will eliminate the Yankees! You just got to love New York and their fans saying the championship is theirs! Hey a little hint go ask the New York Knicks and New York Rangers how that works! Maybe it will be a trifecta of another New York team fallen short!
Ronaldo leads Real Madrid rout of Milan Real Madrid 5-1 AC Milan By Brendan Simpson August 09, 2012 Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid routed AC Milan 5-1 in an exciting pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium in New York last night. Angel di Maria opened the scoring before Robinho equalised, but four second half goals coming from Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Jose Callejon finished the game off for Jose Mourinho’s side. The Portuguese coach will be happy with his side’s performance in their penultimate warm-up game before beginning the defence of their La Liga title against Valencia in ten days time.

On this day we remember a place like the South Bronx... In a place like the South Bronx, there is a series of neighborhoods and attractions. 10 miles south is the neighborhood of Soundview and Mott Haven. 5 miles north is the Cross Bronx expressway... 15 miles to the East, is the neighborhood of Castle Hill, and the Bronx River. 20 miles to the West, lies Yankee Stadium and the Yankee Tavern... On these streets erupted the states/countries most VIOLENT outbreak of Civil Unrests, not once, but TWICE !! HOME to the burning buildings. It is indeed also the home of New York's most INFAMOUS, ATROCIOUS gangs... Whose BLOODY, gory, 40 year feud has taken 5 times as many lives, as the long running Sectarian Conflict in NORTHERN Ireland. Yet whose violent murders CONTINUE today. But for the people in the South Bronx, LIFE WASN'T ALWAYS THIS WAY !!! SMH
Gary Cahill admits he is surprised at the squad's level of fitness in his first Chelsea pre-season. The defender, a January signing from Bolton Wanderers, enjoyed a 45-minute run out against Seattle Sounders on Wednesday evening, and is now looking forward to facing Paris St Germain at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, but between games has been impressed by those around him. 'I'm enjoying it, it's been a good few days,' said the 26-year-old. 'We've trained hard, played a game which I thought the lads looked really sharp in, and we're looking forward to moving on to New York now which I think will be an amazing experience.' Having lifted two trophies in his first four months at the club, Cahill knows all about settling into a new environment quickly, and believes Kevin De Bruyne, Marko Marin and Eden Hazard are all adapting well to the Chelsea way. 'The new boys are settling in well,' he said 'These trips are fantastic to bed in new players, where you spend every day with each other and everyone gets to know the ...

Belgian teenager Romelu Lukaku led the line impressively at CenturyLink Field on Wednesday night and opened the scoring in the third minute after being put through by Josh McEachran. Hazard's deflected effort in the 10th minute put the European champions two goals up, before Fredy Montero's brace - the first of which came following a misplaced McEachran pass - got the Sounders back on level terms. However, Marin marked his debut with a fine strike to put Roberto Di Matteo's side ahead again in the 39th minute and Lukaku rounded off an entertaining first half with a fourth goal four minutes later. Di Matteo made seven changes at the interval, including the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne, but there were no further goals. Chelsea now head to New York to face Paris St Germain - coached by former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti - on Sunday in what will be the first football match at the new Yankee Stadium

He was also the in-house voice for a half-century of Giants football games, encompassing 9 conference championships, 3 NFL championships (1956, 1986, 1990), and the game often called "the greatest ever played", the classic 1958 championship loss to Baltimore. Just got back from a short, but great, trip to Baaahston (a/k/a Boston) and New York City. Spent some time with a few franchisees and saw a little baseball. Monday night it was Red Sox vs Blue Jays at Fenway Pahhk and Tuesday night was Yankees vs Indians at Yankee Stadium. Two great cities ... if I had to choose ... I think I'd have to go with NYC. What a place! Thanks for the invitation Mike Silverstein and for letting us join you and your team. It was an awesome day and night. Paul Pierce thanks for all the hospitality and showing us Boston. I'm hoping to bring Dana with me the next time.

Why couldn't I live in New York? It took about an hour to get from Yankee Stadium to Citi Field on the subway. The two are 10 miles apart.
The Braves won a series in Yankee Stadium by defeating the New York Yankees 10-5 today. For some reason the Yankees kill the Braves at Turner Field but the Braves always seem to return the favor when they go up to New York. Well, tomorrow is an off day and then the Braves are in the great state of Massachusetts for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. The Braves really need to get on a hot streak now. Maybe today's win will really get them going. I sure hope Brandon Beachy will be alright. Tommy Hanson and Tim Hudson pitched very well the last couple of days up in New York. Tomorrow will be a much needed off day. Go Braves!!!
Been a pretty good few days networking in New York! Met a lot of really smart & successful people to partner with in the future! Shuffle off to Buffalo in a few minutes via the Empire Builder Amtrak train. Which goes out of the infamous Penn Station underneath Madison Square Garden. We stay at the Penn Hotel right across the street. Yesterday we did all that we wanted EXCEPT never made it to the USS Intrepid. I have seen it before, but would have liked to take Anny there. New York is a nice place to visit. BUT I WOULDNT WANT TO LIVE IN A CITY THAT HAS LEGIONS OF DEMONS LIVING IN YANKEE STADIUM!

I could get used to this whole New York thing!

This was suppose to be with the photo below from Yankee Stadium. We were all in New York for Sammy's graduation. We also took time to celebrate Patrick's birthday at a Yankee/Cincinnati Reds game. In the 4th inning the guy behind me asks if my name was Kathleen? It was an old friend from grad school in Seattle that lives in Cincinnati. Small world story of the day.

This will be my final New York update. We started the day by visiting China Town and Little Italy. I can't believe how "authentic" those communities seemed, it was as if we were in completely different countries and they were only a few blocks apart. Then we viewed the Big Apple via the top of the Empire State Building. We tried to take a tour of the Yankee Stadium, but after traveling all the way across the city, we discovered it was closed for a private event. Darn you all of you NYU grads! We rushed through the Museum of Natural History, and ended the day by eating at Virgils' BBQ and watching the Broadway version of Spiderman...which was SPECTACULAR! NYC has been great, but I am ready to slow things back down and get back to Ark City tomorrow.
I remember attending the 2008 All-Star Game at old Yankee Stadium and hearing everyone talk with absolute certainty that we'd be returning in New York in five years for the Midsummer Classic at Citi Field. Well, it only took about … Continue reading →

"The Mets have been great; this is really a very, very happy day," Selig said. "I know for the citizens of this great city and state, they will enjoy this immensely." New York last hosted the game in 2008 at old Yankee Stadium. This summer's game is scheduled for July 10 in Kansas City. Now, one of the National League's newest jew ...

Happy Cinco de Mayo MAY 5 IN HISTORY Saturday is May 5, the 126th day of 2012. 47,472 animals have been killed in New York State shelters who rescue groups were ready, willing, and able to save since the ASPCA defeated Oreo's Law, legislation which would have made it illegal for shelters to kill animals when qualified rescue groups were willing to save them. It is not easy to conceptualize 47,472 dead animals. But if you were driving along the road and each of those bodies was lined up end to end, that monumental trail of dead bodies would stretch approximately 15 miles long (and lead straight to ASPCA CEO Ed Sayres' door). Put another way, they would fill virtually all of the seats at Yankee Stadium. By: Nathan Winograd
I'm at Yankee Stadium for Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees w/
Wow,I am totally amazed, two years ago I loaned a lady $5.00 at Yankee Stadium and she just paid me back. I had wrote off the $5 bucks. Well maybe the $800. I paid for a plane ticket will come back to me. Also, the camera and tripod, and guns that were stolen from me, maybe they will come back. I doubt I will ever get the Yankee Watch, and three cartons of Vantage Cigs that were taken from me during a trip to Alaska by airport personnel. Holy Man, I would have to win a lottery to get back the loss from the House in Oneida, New York on Willow Street. Not to mention 7th Street, the screwing I took from that. I am just expecting a Great Wind Fall to make up for all these losses. If you need my address to send me some money, lol, just message me, am I just too too, easy?
For those of you enjoying this long overdue spell of Baltimore Orioles prosperity, WNST.net is offering three trips to New York to see O's battle Mets and Yankees this season. Hope you join us on an orange roadtrip to Citi Field or Yankee Stadium!

I really hate listening to Weekend Edition Sundays on NPR! Reasons: I learn something every time I listen to it, discover a place I need to visit, a book that I need to read, a music CD I need to buy. today: Combined Learning and Travel - Operation Tiger: D Day's Disastrous Rehearsal as I had never heard of it and the Memorial at Slapton Sands, England; Music was Life 'Up On The Divide' Lures A Songwriter Out West -Martha Scanlan; book to read "Imperfect An Improbable Life of Jim Abbott" Abbott is missing his right hand and pitched a no hitter in Yankee Stadium. It is sort of like the Sunday New York Time... however, I can do other things while listening !
The Sox Nation would like to express their sysmpathy to the family of the late great Moose Skowron, who passed away today. I met Moose at several White Sox events and got to see him knock another game off the Yankee Stadium clock in its final year while visiting New York. His distinctive voice was adored by many fans. Godspeed Moose!
I have four extra tickets for the Robbie Knievel (son of Evil Knievel) who will be flying into New York so as to stage a Event at the Yankee Stadium next weekend, if anybody wants them. Robbie is going to try to jump over 1,000 Obama supporters with a Caterpillar D-9 bulldozer.
