(Princip escaped the death penalty because he was underage.) On this date: In 1636, the General Court of Massachusetts passed a legislative act establishing Harvard College. In 1776, the Battle of White Plains was fought during the Revolutionary War, resulting in a limited British victory. Last night I read Marvel-Two-in-One (May 1979) by Peter B. Gillis and Frank Miller with a cover by George Perez. The last time that I read this comic was probably 1979 when I first bought it off the spinner rack at 7-11 on Greene Ave. It's a fun done-in-one story, although Miller's art was a little "off" on the super-heroes. Peter B. Gillis signed my copy of this issue at last month's New York Comic Fest in White Plains, NY. After he signed it, he said, "Decent artist. I wonder whatever became of him."

Today is the Birth Anniversary of HENRY Jaynes FONDA (May 16, 1905 – August 12, 1982) American Film and Stage Actor. Fonda made his mark early as a Broadway actor. He also appeared in 1938 in plays performed in White Plains, New York, with Joan Tompkins. He made his Hollywood debut in 1935, and his career gained momentum after his Academy Award-nominated performance as Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath, a 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about an Oklahoma family who moved west during the Dust Bowl. Throughout six decades in Hollywood, Fonda cultivated a strong, appealing screen image in such classics as The Ox-Bow Incident, Mister Roberts and 12 Angry Men. Later, Fonda moved both toward darker epics as Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and lighter roles in family comedies like Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 54th Academy Awards for the movie On Golden Pond. Fonda was the patriarch of a family of famous actors, including daughter Ja ...

Dear Assemblyman Sweeney, I'm glad that you oppose the Senate and Assembly bills that would restrict the sale of the electric car, the Tesla. This legislation, in 2013 designated AB 7844A / SB 5725A, attempts to change existing law to exclude Tesla from operating in New York. This bill would shut down existing Tesla stores and service locations starting this year. It is anti-competitive and anti-environmentalist. The bill was first introduced late in the last session and would prevent Tesla from selling its vehicles directly to consumers out of mall kiosks, which it currently does in New York. But the Assembly set aside the bill without acting on it. The gas car dealers in New York have been working hard to push Tesla out of NY state. I want Tesla to stay in New York. There are more than 400 Tesla Roadster and Model S owners in New York with more every week. With three stores (Manhattan, Westchester, Garden City) and two service centers (Queens and White Plains) operating in New York, Tesla supports ...

In opening arguments, which are to be presented on Monday at the Westchester County Courthouse in White Plains, prosecutors will contend that Ms. Kennedy, 54, the former wife of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, was driving a car that morning knowing her judgment was impaired by a sleeping pill — even if she ingested the drug by mistake. The defense will try to convince the six jurors that she must have accidentally taken the pill since she was planning to work out in a gym and was so disoriented by the pill’s impact that she was not aware she was driving.

I guess they called him "MACK" The man that brought the McElhannon name to the US John McElhannon John McElhannon enlisted in the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania Line, from York Co., PA, according to his application for service in the war. The young emigrant from Ireland must have been a strong supporter of the colonial cause during the American Revolution, because he joined the Continental Army. He said he served in the war three years and upward as a private under General Anthony Wayne. He participated in the Battle of Brooklyn, August 27, 177 at Long Island, New York. Was captured at Fort Washington, New York and was not released until the Battle of Princeton, after which he served under Captain Armstrong, Colonel Stewart and General Anthony Wayne in the Battles of White Plains, New York, Brandywine and Germantown, Pennsylvania. Texas Fuel Company, founded in 1901 in Beaumont, Texas, by Joseph S. Cullinan, Thomas J. Donoghue, Walter Benona Sharp, and Arnold Schlaet upon the discovery of oil at Spindletop. For many years, Texaco was the only company selling gasoline under the same brand name in all 50 US states, as well as Canada, making it the most truly national brand among its competitors. Its current logo features a white star in a red circle (a reference to the lone star of Texas), leading to the long-running advertising jingles "You can trust your car to the man who wears the star" and "Star of the American Road."[citation needed] The company was headquartered in Harrison, New York, near White Plains, prior to the merger with Chevron. Texaco gasoline comes with Techron, an additive developed by Chevron, as of 2005, replacing the previous CleanSystem3. The Texaco brand is strong in the U.S., Latin America and West Africa. It has a presence in Europe as well; for example, it is a well-known retail brand in the UK, with around ...

From the beginning of U.S. history, Italians have supported American independence. Three Italian regiments, totaling some 1,500 men, fought for American independence: the Third Piemonte, the 13th Du Perche, and the Royal Italian. Filippo Mazzei, a Tuscan physician, fought alongside Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry during the American Revolution. Mazzei drew up a plan to capture the British in New York by cutting off their sea escape, and convinced France to help the American colonists financially and militarily in their struggle against British rule. He also inspired the Jeffersonian phrase: "All men are created equal" when he wrote "All men are by nature equally free and independent." Italian officers in the American Revolution include: Captain Cosimo de Medici of the North Carolina Light Dragoons; Lieutenant James Bracco, 7th Maryland Regiment, killed at the Battle of White Plains; Captain B. Tagliaferro, second in command of the Second Virginia Regiment, a direct subaltern of General George Washingto ...
Back from New York a day late b/c of bad weather in Toronto (huh?) and NYC (huh again!) My flight on Sunday was delayed thrice, moved to a new flight, it was delayed twice more and finally I returned to my friends, the Birks's place in White Plains. No real sign of bad weather in either city. NYC was great. Enjoyed a ride through the forest of the Bronx River Parkway, unexpected extra dinner with the Birks clan. Saw Old Jews Telling Jokes on the West side on Saturday and like that. Saw my friend Ellen Barry star in the play The Golden Years. She was excellent. Play was a workshop production and needs work but it has a good premise and shows promise.

Harry Reid has scheduled a vote tomorrow to install another one of Barack Obama's appointees to the D.C.’s Court of Appeals. As you know, I’ve made sure members like you know about the dangerous backgrounds of Obama’s nominees such as Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, Cass Sunstein and of course, Eric Holder. Now we can add Caitlin Halligan to Obama’s long line of anti-gun judicial nominees. Halligan is a stereo-typical leftist judicial activist who views the bench more as a progressive pulpit than a position for the application of the law. In May of 2003, Halligan spoke before a crowd in White Plains, New York where she talked about her involvement in bringing forth lawsuits against gun manufacturers. And what was the claim? It was Halligan’s belief that manufacturers of firearms be held liable to victims for any crime that criminals commit with a firearm. This kind of absurd lawsuit is what you expect from radical anti-gun activists, not someone being considering for a Federal Court! She went on t ...
When Matisyahu emerged in 2004 with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, his musical persona seemed a novelty to some. Here was a Hasidic Jew -- dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard -- who nevertheless performed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism over reggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica. Moreover, he punctuated his performances with stage diving. It may have seemed like a joke at first, but Matisyahu was serious about his craft, and his diverse style soon garnered Grammy nominations, gold record certifications, and a broad audience. Matisyahu was born Matthew Miller on June 30, 1979, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Berkeley, California, which they eventually ditched for White Plains, New York. Miller initially rebelled against his traditional Jewish upbringing, considering himself a Deadhead and a hippie by his early teens. But at the age of 14, during a camping t ...

Chapter 2 29 year old Tivis-Troit Hawkins, a caretaker for the estate of Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath, President of the American Hebrew Congregations, lives at the bottom of the long, steep driveway leading to the main house of Eisendrath, with his wife Betty. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, they moved to New York after they were married, a friend of Betty's finding them both work. They settled in Mount Kisco, where Tivis worked as a mechanic at Kenisco Tube, a tire shop. He was fired shortly after for fighting with fellow employees, and was hired by Eisendrath as caretaker for his property located on Mill's Road, in North Salem, where Betty was employed as a housekeeper. They moved into the caretaker cottage, above a two car garage used for equipment at the time. On the evening of July 17, 1967, after having a fight with Betty, Hawkins left the cottage in his wife's Ford Mustang, telling her he was going to visit a friend in down by White Plains and he didn't know when he'd be back, so she shouldn't wait up ...
Sen. Ball renews call for immediate removal of maps and unveils legislation Law Enforcement plans rally to hold Journal News Accountable Brewster, N.Y. – 1/13/2013 – Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) announced that a burglary has been reported on Davis Ave. in White Plains, New York that evidently ties into The Journal News gun maps. It is reported that the burglar used The Journal News’ interactive gun map to target a home included on the map. Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt. “The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs. If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens. Former convicts have already testified to the usefulness of the asinine Journal News ‘gun maps’ yet the reckless editors are evidently willing to roll the dice, gambling with the liv ...

Dear my Brooklyn, Long Island and perhaps Westchester and Rockland friends! As a native New Jersey person who loves NYC, I still don't really know the trans-East River parts of the New York area (such as Long Island; the farthest out I've been is Roosevelt Field mall). Having been in Binghamton University for some time, I now actually have a REASON to travel out there. Next week I am planning a multi-day tour of 1) Flatbush, 2) 5 Towns, 3) Greatneck, and maybe 4) White Plains. I would drive to Brooklyn first, and travel counterclockwise ( in the above order ) around the region over three nights/ 4 days, probably starting Monday morning. Here's the question: I would reeally enjoy and appreciate if a friend or two from these different places would like to host me for a night and show me around their hometowns during the day. If anyone would like to be a part of this, please message me or post! p.s. if anyone would like a tour of essex county, NJ, I'd reciprocate

Some gun shows canceling after Newtown shooting Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (AP) — Four gun shows, all about an hour's drive from Newtown, Conn., all canceled. A show in White Plains, N.Y., — brought back a few years ago after being called off for a decade because of the Columbine shooting — is off because officials decided it didn't seem appropriate now, either. In Danbury, Conn. — about 10 miles west of Newtown — the venue backed out. Same with three other shows in New York's Hudson Valley, according to the organizer. Gun advocates aren't backing down from their insistence on the right to keep and bear arms. But heightened sensitivities and raw nerves since the Newtown shooting have led to toned-down displays at gun shows and prompted some officials and sponsors to cancel the well-attended exhibitions altogether. Some of the most popular guns will be missing from next weekend's gun show in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., after show organizers agreed to bar the display and sale of AR-15 military-style semia ...
Reposting a friend's post. Thoughts? (Reuters) - A suburban New York newspaper that ignited a furor by publishingthe identities of thousands of residents who hold gun licenses has hired armed security to guard its staff after receiving an intimidating e-mail, a police report said. Among a "large amount of negative correspondence" that White Plains, New York-based Journal News has received since publishing permit holders' names was one e-mail in which the sender "wondered what would get in her mail next," according to a Clarkstown, New York, police report obtained by Reuters on Wednesday. The police investigated and determined that the email did not contain a specific threat and therefore was not illegal. However, the paper's editor decided to hire a private armed security firm because they were concerned about their safety. Gee, so what do ordinary people do when they are concerned about their safety, but don't have the money to hire an expensive private security firm? They go buy a gun -- or three. So he ...
I THINK THIS COMES UNDER THE HEADING: "IT'S OKAY FOR ME, BUT NOT FOR YOU!" UPI) - A New York newspaper that drew nationwide anger after publishing gun-permit holders' names and addresses is now protected by armed guards, the publisher said. The increased security at The Journal News, which covers the lower Hudson Valley just north of New York City, comes as the newspaper promised to forge ahead with plans to expand its interactive map of pistol-permit holders to include a third county. It also comes amid a several-hour scare at the newspaper's White Plains office when an envelope containing a suspicious white powder arrived in the mail. Local officials said they determined the substance in the envelope was not a threat. The Gannett Co. newspaper published an article Dec. 23 titled "The Gun Owner Next Door: What You Don't Know About the Weapons in Your Neighborhood" after the mass school shooting in nearby Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and six adult staffers dead. Here is a segment that discusses the details of his famous defeat and amazing come-back: Anticipating the British, Washington proceeded to New York and fortified Brooklyn Heights to defend the approaches to New York City. The British commander, General Sir William Howe, made a flanking move which drove Washington from Long Island and forced him to retreat to Harlem Heights. Using naval transport, Howe again outflanked the Americans, forcing Washington to withdraw to White Plains. With the capture of a significant portion of the American army at Fort Washington, the British acquired an undisputed hold on New York City. Washington's army was compelled to retreat through New Jersey and to cross the Delaware River in December 1776. American spirits fell to a low ebb, as approximately 34,000 British regulars confronted Washington's army of 3,000. At this point, Washington made a daring, and possibly his most famous tactical m ...

For all the Twinkie lovers out there...update.Hope May Loom for Hostess WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Hostess Brands Inc. made headlines late last week when it announced it was closing up shop, but bankruptcy judge in New York is saying not so fast -- reportedly asking attorneys for both the company and its striking union to try to work things out. According to a report by Dow Jones, at a hearing on Hostess' request to begin the process of shutting down its business, Judge Robert Drain of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in White Plains, N.Y., asked attorneys representing Hostess and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International union whether mediation could help the two resolve their issues and avoid the loss of more than 18,000 jobs. "To me not to have gone through that step leaves a huge question mark over this case, which I think -- I may be wrong -- but I think will only be answered in litigation. And that's no one's desired outcome," the judge said. Hostess is in court today to begin t ...
NY man who lost leg in crucifix mishap sues church NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A trial has been scheduled for early next year in the lawsuit filed against an upstate New York church by a man whose leg had to be amputated after a 600-pound crucifix fell on him. Attorney Kevin Kitson of White Plains tells The Associated Press that the case of his client, David Jimenez, is scheduled for trial in January in an Orange County court. Kitson says Jimenez prayed to the crucifix outside St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh after his wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. When she recovered, he showed his thanks by volunteering to clean the cross. In May 2010, the crucifix fell on him, crushing his right leg. It was later amputated. He's suing the church for $3 million. The church says it's not liable for the accident.

He was a columnist for Newsweek magazine from 1984 to 2011. Because he writes on economic issues, he is sometimes confused with Nobel laureate in Economics Paul Samuelson, to whom he is not related. He began his career in journalism as a reporter on the business desk of The Washington Post in 1969. He left the paper to become a freelancer in 1973. His work has appeared in The Sunday Times, The New Republic and the Columbia Journalism Review. He joined the National Journal in 1976, where he wrote the "Economic Focus" column. New York and New Jersey After having withdrawn his army from Boston, General Howe had now focused on capturing the New York City. In defending the city, General Washington had divided his 20,000 soldiers between the Long Island and the Manhattan. While the British troops were gathering and assembling at the Staten Island for campaign, Washington had the newly issued Declaration of American Independence and he read this to his men. There was no longer any possibility for compromise. In August 27, 1776, after the landing of about 22,000 men on Long Island, the British had driven the Americans back to Brooklyn Heights that resulted into the biggest battle of the entire Revolution. Eventually, Howe had led the blockade to strengthen there. In a feat considered by many historians to be one of his most impressive actions as Commander in Chief. The withdrawal of Washington on his entire remaining army and all their supplies across the East River in one night without the discovery of the British or losing any sin ...

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police have arrested New York City man Jason Bohn for the beating and strangulation death of his ex-girlfriend, Danielle Thomas, in their Queens apartment, CBS New York reports. Authorities say Bohn then posed as Thomas, sending texts from her cell phone. District Attorney Richard A. Brown said Bohn surrendered Friday night in White Plains, according to The Associated Press. Neighbors told CBS New York they found Thomas beaten and strangled in the pair's Astoria apartment, her body in the bathtub, surrounded by bags of ice. Brown told CBS New York that police believe Thomas was murdered sometime last weekend and then was kept in the tub. Bohn allegedly called a police precinct on Tuesday to report that an "unconscious woman" was in his apartment, saying that he couldn't call 911 because he wasn't in the area. Hours after she was killed, Bohn reportedly used Thomas' cell phone to send her friends several texts, pretending to be Thomas. Police said they found two handwritten notes in the ...

HOT NYOOH : Endangered wolves at NY preserve produce 8 pups (Jim Fitzgerald, Associated Press, White Plains, New York | Tue, 05/08/2012 7:08 AM ) Eight rare Mexican wolf pups have been born at a preserve in the New York City suburbs, a development that could aid the federal program that has reintroduced the endangered species to the wild. The Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem announced Monday that five males and three females were born Sunday to the Mexican wolves known as F749 and M740. A video on the center's website showed a furry gray mass of tiny pups, some of them making small noises. The online announcement said the pups were no bigger than a potato. "It's always a good day when we learn of the birth of an endangered species," said Peter Siminski, coordinator of the Mexican wolf program for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. "Eight new pups in a world population of around 366 is a 2 percent increase." Siminski said there are an estimated 42 Mexican wolves in the wild and 324 in captivity. The ...

No pic for Day 4. So I take a train from White Plains station to Grand Central. I hop in a taxi and say "take me to Penn Station." As I hop out and go down the escalator, I realize that I LEFT MY PHONE in the taxi!! I run back but he's long gone and all the taxis look the same. With 15 minutes to go, I see all the subways and realize that I'm at the wrong Penn Station! So a guy directs me to the Penn Bus station. I run ten blocks with my roller luggage and go downstairs to the DC bus. I bought my ticket online, so I ask where I can print it. I then go upstairs where I hand my credit/debit card to the ticket person but my card is not in the system. I buy another ticket and hop on the bus a few minutes after 10AM. Later I realize that the ticket I bought online was not for a Greyhound Bus but for another NY2DC bus. I realized this because I was suppose to arrive at Dupont Circle in DC and walk to the Melrose Hotel but I'm 5 miles away. So I cough up 20 bucks for some guy to drive me. Later I go to the Veriz ...

Racist Cops and Vigilantes: As MSM Covers More Like Trayvon, Will We See Justice? The murder of Trayvon Martin seems as though it's become one of the most-reported stories about brutality and race since Rodney King. However, tales of racist cops and viglantes are not new, but perhaps because of the mainstream media's heightened awareness, more stories like it are getting more airtime. Right now, two separate, racialized tragedies are starting to see a little more coverage: • In November, police in White Plains, New York, shot and killed Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., an unarmed, 68-year-old Marine veteran, after his medical alert alarm set off an alert accidentally. Because of the life-alarm, the entire ordeal was recorded on tape; Chamberlain is heard explaining there is no emergency, while cops are heard calling him the n-word through the door—which they then broke down, tased him, and shot him twice in the chest. He was dressed only in his boxers. • In mid-March, Deanna Johnson, a middle-aged white wo ...
