Issak MohamudEsq Prof.Makau Mutua: Kenyans should not have elected Uhuru and Ruto | May 19, 2014. A Kenyan-born professor in the United States declares he is not calling for regime change in Kenya, but believes having a leader under indictment is not good governance. President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto face charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for allegedly coordinating the 2007 post-election violence during which more than 1,000 people were killed. Makau Mutua has commented in Kenya newspapers that he has serious doubts about the legitimacy of both men to serve as leaders of Kenya. He lamented last year’s election of Mr. Kenyatta and Mr. Ruto. Mutua is dean of the State University of New York’s law school in Buffalo, New York. He teaches Human Rights and International Law, has written books on Kenya and served in Kenya on a constituional commission and a task for truth and reconciliation. “These two individuals, as you know, were elected in 2013 while they were u ...

As Obama visits Japan and South Korea, I'm sharing this excerpt from my talk, "The Pacific Pivot and its Regional Consequences," Center for Korean Studies Conference on North Korea, State University of New York at Binghamton, April 25, 2014. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s perceived repudiation or minimizing of Japan’s war guilt has alienated not only China but South Korea. The relations between the two pillars of Washington’s Pivot strategy have become so bad that President Obama felt compelled to hold a trilateral meeting with Abe and South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague in late March. Paradoxically, the Pivot strategy, with Japan’s heightened role in it, may in fact be straining rather than consolidating political and military relations among some US allies. In this connection, let me just focus on some of the implications of the Pivot for the two Koreas: The first is that, with Japan becoming more assertive and less repentan ...

Meet The Scientist My name is Don Moore. I studied wildlife biology and management at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York for my Bachelors and Doctorate degrees. Most of my research has been on the behavior of deer, bears and other mammals. I started working with polar bears and penguins in zoos and aquariums about 20 years ago. This work with animals from the north and south poles began my fascination with climate change, especially as polar ice began melting about 15 years ago…and melting faster than any of our scientific models suggested it would melt! My current work involves trying to help us all understand how we humans can save bears and other species in nature and in zoos and aquariums. I’m looking forward to answering your questions during Wednesday’s broadcast, especially questions about climate connections to animals around our tiny planet and how you can help us save species. Polar bears are specially adapted to live in the ...

Freedom House Founded in 1941 in New York City, Freedom House is a nongovernmental, bipartisan organization committed to promoting peace and democracy around the world. Early leaders included First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (honorary chairman) and 1940 Republican presidential nominee Wendell Willkie. The organization was originally founded to counter American isolationism during World War II, and played a role in pushing the United States to get involved. Formed to confront Nazism, Freedom House expanded its role after World War II, promoting trans-Atlantic partnerships and vehemently opposing McCarthyism. In 1947, Freedom House urged New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey to create a state university that would “accept all qualified students regardless of race, color or place of habitation.” (Dewey would later sign legislation that created the State University of New York.) This marked the beginning of the role Freedom House would play in the civil rights movements. Bayard Rustin, the organizer of the March ...

More Businesses Want Workers With Math or Science Degrees By JAMES R. HAGERTY Oct. 20, 2013 MALTA, N.Y.—New York State got an influx of high-tech jobs five years ago when its offer of more than $1 billion of incentives, including cash and tax breaks, persuaded Globalfoundries Inc. to set up a semiconductor plant near Saratoga Lake in this town 25 miles north of Albany. There has been one hitch: Because it is hard to find enough people with the right technical skills around here, about half of the 2,200 jobs at the plant were filled by people brought in from outside New York, and 11% are foreigners. In terms of basic math and science skills, "we're really floundering here in the U.S.," Mike Russo, Globalfoundries' director of government relations, said in an interview. The company has embarked on a crash program with nearby school districts, the State University of New York and other partners to train future workers. Globalfoundries says average annual base salaries at the plant range from $30,000 for pr ...

Born in New York City's Lower East Side of immigrant parents, he suffered early loss and privation, his mother dying when he was only a few years old. He interned at Mount Sinai Hospital for two years and did his psychiatric residency at Manhattan State Hospital on Ward's Island. After completing his residency, at the urging of Dr. Horace Westerlake Frink, Kardiner sought analysis with Sigmund Freud and was accepted as a student-patient (1921-1922). Freud set two limitations to that analysis: that it not extend past six months, and that the fee per session should be ten American dollars. Kardiner was proud of the fact that Fre ...

If he cheated on you, blame his dad. And his grandfather and his great-grandfather. It turns out that some of us are genetically programmed to be unfaithful. At least, that's the finding of researchers from Binghamton University, State University of New York. While everyone has the dopamine receptor D4 polymorphism, or the DRD4 gene that promotes thrill-seeking behavior, about half of us have a variation of it that makes us more vulnerable to sexual promiscuity. The gene, which can influence the brain's chemistry and, thus, an individual's behavior, is also responsible for alcohol and gambling addictions. Lead study author Justin Garcia told ABC News that those who have the DRD4 variant are "more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity." He says the desire to cheat or have sex with many d ...

Oct. 13, 2010 -- The euphoric “high” that accompanies the passion-filled, early days of romantic love is a common pop music theme, but is it just a metaphor or is love really like a drug? When researchers examined the question, they found that intense feelings of romantic love affect the brain in the same way drugs like cocaine or powerful pain relievers do. “The reason people are so attracted to cocaine is that it activates the area of the brain that makes you feel good,” researcher Arthur Aron, PhD, tells WebMD. “The same reward area is activated when people are experiencing the intense desire of romantic love.” Intense Love = Less Pain Aron, who is a professor of psychology at State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook, has been researching the impact of love on the brain for three decades. Several years ago he and longtime pain researcher Sean Mackey, MD, PhD, began talking at a neuroscience conference and conceived the idea for the study. Mackey is chief of the division of pain manag ...

Originating around 1789 as a small trading community near the eponymous Buffalo Creek,[1] Buffalo grew quickly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, with the city as its western terminus. By 1900, Buffalo was the 8th largest city in the United States,[5] and went on to become a major railroad hub,[6] and the largest grain-milling center in the country.[7] The latter part of the 20th century saw a reversal of fortunes: Great Lakes shipping was rerouted by the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, and steel mills and other heavy industry relocated to places such as China.[8] With the start of Amtrak in the 1970s, Buffalo Central Terminal was also abandoned, and trains were rerouted to nearby Depew, New York (Buffalo-Depew) and Exchange Street Station. By 1990 the city had fallen back below its 1900 population levels.[9] Today, the region's largest economic sectors are health care and education,[10] and these continue to grow despite the lagging national and worldwide economies.[11] This growth has been ...
It's APPLE time of year. Take advantage of this in season treat! According to USDA researchers, three apple varieties—Red Delicious, Granny Smith and Gala—rank in the top 20 food sources for antioxidants per serving, with Red Delicious in the No. 1 slot. When eaten with the skin, Red Delicious apples have about twice as much fiber and 45% more antioxidants as they do when peeled. The apple antioxidant, quercetin, may boost immunity and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s as well as lung, prostate and liver cancers. In fact, Cornell University researchers found that treating liver-cancer cells with 50mg of apple extract slowed their growth by 57%. Apples also contain the fiber pectin, which can help you feel fuller; a State University of New York at Buffalo study found that the amount of pectin in one apple reduced caloric intake in obese participants.

Discovery Health "Why do we fall in love?" "It is better to have loft and lost than to never have loft at all." — Groucho Marx Falling in love is a magical experience that happens between two people. So why do people fall in love? Professor Arthur Aron from State University of New York at Stonybrook has been exploring the dynamics of what happens when two people are falling in love: Q: What motivates people to seek out love? A: Our primary motivation as human beings is to expand the self and to increase our abilities and our effectiveness. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our relationships with other people. We have learned in our research that it is important to feel that you have the ability to be an effective person, especially in our relationships. Q: How does this theory of self-expansion explain the process of falling in love? A: Usually, we fall in love with a person that we find attractive and appropriate for us, but also someone who demonstrates that they are attracted to us. T ...

Everyday Health: a new study suggests that smaller sacrifices might actually play a key role in our relationship satisfaction. The study, which was led by researchers at State University of New York at Brockport, found that when couples made certain sacrifices in their relationships, they were happier and more bonded. However, not all sacrifices are created equal: When people had to make highly difficult sacrifices, their relationship satisfaction decreased, but when they made simpler and more common sacrifices, they were happier with their choices and their partner. What can account for these findings? Why are some sacrifices beneficial to our relationship and others detrimental? It all comes down to balance. When a relationship is uneven and one partner is forced to sacrifice or compromise much more than the other partner, both will suffer the effects of an unbalanced relationship. Partners who routinely ignore their own needs and desires will feel cheated and taken advantage of, while partners who alwa ...

FYI...potassium may be the single most important "nutrient" for controlling sodium levels and normalizing blood pressure. Potassium lowers blood pressure by balancing the sodium-potassium ratio. Balancing!!! Ah..the wonders of the human body! The ratio of potassium to sodium should be 4:1 according to Dr. Richard Moore of State University of New York. Watch out for all that sodium in your diet. Watch out for processed foods. Get that potassium in your body!
