Knox Automobile Company of Springfield, MA, built these three fire engines. The first one, the FDNY rig in a tent, was at the 1909 New York Auto Show at Madison Square Garden. Second photo, on a New York City street, is a similar FDNY rig, or maybe the same rig at a later date; note that it has 72 on the seat and High Pressure on the hose body, both absent in the first photo. Last, the Knox midship piston pumper was at the 1911 auto show at the Coliseum in Chicago. Ken Soderbeck has or had a Knox that resembled this last one, and I recall reading years ago in Enjine!Enjine! that San Jose, Costa Rica still has one like this, but on more modern wheels and tires, and I think the one in Costa Rica has a 1930s radiator, too? These three photos are all from Detroit Public Library's web site.

LET’S GO RANGERS! The best kept secret in the area since last year’s Stanley Cup Playoff Finals is………..you guessed it the 2015 New York Rangers. Currently taking over the area once again from Nassau County’s lowlifes (Islanders) the Rangers have won 12 of their last 13 games as they ascend to the elite of the NHL. This week during a “measuring stick” road trip to the west coast the Rangers trampled the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 followed by a back to back drubbing of the Stanley Cup Champion Kings 4-3. The trip concludes tonight with a game at the Shark tank in San Jose. The Blueshirts return home against the Lowlifes on Tuesday night at the Homeplace for Hockey –Madison Square Garden . It is looking more and more like there may be a Rangers vs Lowlife playoff series once again in hockey this spring. The Isles survived a mini slump eeking out a win against the pathetic Devils of Newark and appear to be on a collision course with the Rangers. The two New York teams meet 4 times from now til ...

On the anniversary of his death I consider myself very blessed to have been in the audience of John Lennon's last public performance on Thanksgiving night 1974 at Madison Square Garden. He came out during an Elton John concert and played 4 songs with Elton. John lost a bet with Elton and was fulfilling his end of the bargain. Elton sang on Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" and told John that he thought the song would hit number one. Lennon didn't think it would and the bet was if it did then he would have to perform the next time Elton was in New York to which Lennon agreed. Well, he lost and those of us attending Elton's concert won the performance of a life time. It was electric. So sad though that Lennon's life was taken from him. We miss you John!!!
:May 20, 1962 - Madison Square Garden - My old colleague in the House of Representatives and friend Aime Forand, Mr. Meany, ladies and gentlemen, and fellow Americans: I am very proud to be here today at one of over 33 meetings which are being held across the United States. And it is a source of regret to me that the head of the most significant organization here today, Mr. Held, age 77, working on this meeting, had a heart attack--was taken to the hospital. I think we should pass this legislation as soon as possible. I come to New York because I believe the effort in which we are engaged is worth the time and effort of all of us. I come from Boston, Mass., near Faneuil Hall, where for a whole period of years meetings were held by interested citizens in order to lay down the groundwork for American independence. And while there may be some who say that the business of government is so important that it should be confined to those who govern, in this free society of ours the consent and may I say the suppo ...

I did two DW photoshoots, no cybermen, except me, and let's be honest, I'm only 49.881% lol, and only a handful of Daleks. I'm wondering if it was just the sheer size of this con that preventing people from breaking out their bulkier costumes? People did seem to enjoy and recognize my cosplay which was great ...
Sitaram Yechury The country is ‘rejoicing’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘came, saw and conquered’ US visit. The PTI reporting of the Madison Square Garden event gave him ‘rock star celebrity’ status! He himself claimed credit, upon return, rhetorically asking:“Kya karan hai ki aaj America mein bhi Hindustan ka danka baj raha hai?”(What are the reasons as to why India’s trumpet is being blown in America?)Rewind to March 8, 1971. I was in New York as the Indian representative of the World Youth Forum. The city was full of excitement over “the fight of the century” at the very same Madison Square Garden. Cassius Clay, who after refusing the US ‘draft law’ to compulsorily serve in the US army had embraced Islam to become Muhammad Ali, challenged the reigning world heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Frazier. The two hitherto “undefeated fighters” combating to decide the “real” champion was hyped as “the event of the 20th century” that transcended boxing. “The fight” ...

On the God degree (7th day) of October, 1985, twenty-nine years ago, Minister Louis Farrakhan spoke to an arena filled with Five Percenters, Christians, FOI's, MGT's, Ansars, Muslims, Pan Africans, entertainers and more. My how our communities have fallen since. Perhaps there was a very close census and note taking by the enemy to original people aligning in one Madison Square Garden forum. It was ALL the way live you heard? I watched this video back in 1998 in New York at one of the God & Earths house in heart pounding tears and passion for our liberation. The most powerful lecture he has EVER delivered in my opinion. Billy Joel, twelve gardens-live album. Anyway, I noticed some freshly pasted posters for a new movie with Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White. It might get loud, was the title. Years later, when I had met a man with the software to download any movie I could think of, we watched it. The other two went to Page's house, who has a recording studio on the premises. The most telling moment in the movie came when Page strapped up and started to play, and the look on the two other guys faces said it all. They were in the presence, of greatness.

PM Modi's US visit: 7 ministers forced to cancel trip to NYC by PMO PM Modi is alive and well in the Americas. On his first trip to New York as the Prime Minister of India, 64-year-old Modi sold out world famous sports and entertainment arena Madison Square Garden in a few hours, according to the organisers. “PM Modi is an absolute rock star,” said one of the event organizers Tejaswi S Patel, who is the president of wealth management firm Evyavan. “Over 40,000 people had applied for tickets but Madison Square Garden can only seat 20,000 people.” Modi will draw perhaps the largest crowd ever by a foreign leader on US soil when he takes the stage on Sunday in Madison Square Garden before a sellout crowd of 20,000. Legions of Indian Americans, many of them wealthy Gujaratis, who were stung at Modi being denied a US visa in 2005, will celebrate his meteoric rise and get their moment in the sun. The event being emceed by Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri and TV journalist Hari Sreenivasan will have all t ...

I Love Being Black Rest In Peace to Billie Holiday who passed away this date in 1959. This is a rare recording of Billie Holiday performing 'Strange Fruit' live. "Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem and published in 1937, it protested American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the South at the turn of the century, but continued there and in other regions of the United States. Meeropol set it to music and, with his wife and the singer Laura Duncan, performed it as a protest song in New York venues in the late 1930s, including Madison Square Garden.

Knicks First Take Tired of Waiting for Melo? Here's a possible Explanation Carmelo Anthony has been really pushing for Lebron James to join him in New York and with that, is the cause for Phil Jackson's trade talks with Philadelphia and other teams to make cap room. According to the New York Post, it is Carmelo's dream to play with LeBron in NEW YORK. Not Miami. Not Los Angeles. But to play in Madison Square Garden. Phil has been in talks with teams trying to ship out the expiring deals of both Andrea Bargnani and Amare Stoudemire without taking any contracts back. Melo has been holding out with the faint hope that Phil can pull off the miracle or miracles, meanwhile LeBron is scheduled to meet with Pat Riley and Miami Heat Officials today in Las Vegas. According to Chris Broussard, the meeting is set to to include Head Coach Erik Sploestra, Owner Mickey Arison & Dwayne Wade. Chris Sheridan of Sheridan Hoops has reported that its a 90% chance that LeBron will return to Cleveland. Sources below:

Back again with my SCF hot takes from game 4 at Madison Square Garden. 1. Both goalies are majorly dialed in at this point. Lundqvist was spectacular last night and the only reason the Rangers won while Quick kept pace. 2. To those Rangers fans calling into WFAN yesterday 'blaming' Lundqvist, just turn in your fan card now. You are never getting it back either. 3. Outshot 15-1 in the third period and 41-19 for the game does not bode well for New York. How long can you rope-a-dope and keep depending on Lundqvist to bail you out in the end? They have to find a way to generate more offense. 4. Continuing that thought, the Rangers have yet to score a 3rd period goal in the entire series, being outshot by 27 over the first 4 games. 5. Can someone please tell Alain Vingeault to get Brad Richards off the first power play unit? Please.someone.just pick up the phone. It's painful to see how downhill his game has gone since the opening series vs the Flyers. 6. Man was Tanner Pearson flying or what? That kid is goin ...

Bio: Scott "Skyntyte" Free aka Bo Digitally - You wouldn't know because he never blows his own horn… Scott "Skyntyte" Free is FAST LANE's "ace-in-the-hole." At 18 years old and a few months out of high school, Skyntyte auditioned for, and got the guitar/singing/dancing gig with Ecstasy, an R&B band based out of East Providence, Rhode Island that was later discovered while playing at Harlem's famed Leviticus nightclub by the Late R&B ingenue, Phyllis Hyman. She was immediately knocked out by the group and in turn, brought the band to the attention of the Late R&B powerhouse, Teddy Pendergrass. Ecstasy would go on to tour with Pendergrass on his 1980 Love TKO Tour Featuring Stephanie Mills, but before touring with "Teddy Bear," Ecstasy also toured as opening act for Chic, playing shows with bands such as Cameo, Gene Chandler, Stacy Lattisaw & Johnny Gill and Larry Graham to name a few, also performing a week-long engagement at New York's famed Apollo Theater as well as a Madison Square Garden performance ...
By Ron Cook / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette NEW YORK -- Is it just me or have you noticed a troubling trend that has developed in the Penguins-New York Rangers playoff series? Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist outplayed the Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury Sunday night in Game 6 at Madison Square Garden in a season-extending 3-1 win. He did the same thing Friday night in Game 5 in Pittsburgh, a 5-1 Rangers win. This is not good at all for the Penguins, who must play a Game 7 they never saw coming Tuesday night at Consol Energy Center. They won't just have to deal with a suddenly energized Rangers team that believes in miracles. How did New York coach Alain Vigneault put it? "We're going to Pitt for Game 7. We've got a chance." The Penguins also will play with the realization that they will be remembered for one of the franchise's all-time postseason collapses if they lose and blow what was a seemingly secure 3-1 edge in the series. Pressure, pressure, can you feel the pressure? "Nothing matters but the next one," ...
Mourning Martin St. Louis scores as Rangers force Game 7 vs. Pens Rangers Top Penguins To Even Series Martin St. Louis scored his third goal of the playoffs to lead the Rangers past the Penguins 3-1 and force a Game 7 in their playoff series. St. Louis came to New York in March in a deal in which popular team captain Ryan Callahan was shipped to Tampa Bay. When he didn't light up the scoreboard right away, the Madison Square Garden crowd was slow to warm to him. That all changed Sunday night. Three days after the sudden death of his mother, St. Louis scored 3:34 in, and the Rangers avoided elimination for the second straight game by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series is Tuesday in Pittsburgh. New York advanced in the first round with a Game 7 win over Philadelphia. St. Louis rejoined his teammates for Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Friday, after a quick trip to Montreal to be with his family. That dedication inspired his teammates during a 5-1 win and carried o ...
"Stairway to Heaven" | Live at Madison Square Garden, New York "My hand was writing out the words, 'There's a lady is sure [sic], all that glitters is gold, and she's buying a stairway to heaven'. I just sat there and looked at them and almost leapt out of my seat." Plant's own explanation of the lyrics was that it "was some cynical aside about a woman getting everything she wanted all the time without giving back any thought or consideration. The first line begins with that cynical sweep of the hand ... and it softened up after that" - Robert Plant

Here's one of the most unusual structures in Baltimore... Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, formerly known as First Methodist Episcopal Church (1884) 2200 St. Paul Street Stanford White (1853-1906) was one of the most successful and gifted architects of the Gilded Age. A partner in the prominent New York design firm, McKim, Mead and White, Stanford was known for his detailed artistic renderings. Specializing in elaborate private residences, he created a variety of houses throughout the eastern United States, along with public buildings and churches. The second Madison Square Garden was designed by White, its rooftop the eventual site of his highly publicized murder. In 1906, White was shot in the head by the millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw during the premiere performance of Mam’zelle Champagne. Thaw, an avid drug user and possible sadist, was the husband of 21 year-old Evelyn Nesbit, a model, actress and former lover of White. The murder was mistaken as exhibition by the excited Madison Square Roof Ga ...
The NYPD's anti- photographer campaign isn't just limited to news photographers but famous movie stars filming political films as well : 8.30 2004 - PEOPLE MAGAZINE Rosario Dawson Arrested in NY Bush Protest Thousands of protestors took to the streets of Manhattan Sunday to show their opposition to President Bush as the Republican National Convention kicked off at Madison Square Garden. After more than three decades of keeping these secrets under my hat, I can finally reveal how my juvenile delinquent friends and I used to sneak into Madison Square Garden. Whenever a decent show would pop up at MSG, which in those days meant any band with a guitar, bass, and drums. The sturdy youth of Jackson Heights would gather and take the mighty RR train into Manhattan for an almost free night of worshiping Satan through rock music. We would all gather under the Ace picture. For those of you who are too young to remember or are not New York natives, the Ace picture was a giant picture of the Bronx's greatest son Mr. Paul "Ace" Frehley from KISS. Ace's visage hung on the 7th Avenue side of the Garden for about five years before being replaced by ughhh.Billy Joel. We would cobble together a couple of old ticket stubs that we would appropriate from various sources to make it look like one whole ticket. The Garden had their own proprietary box office in those days and all the tickets no matter what the e ...

Opinions required: I'm going back to New York this year, but should I book in August when the weather is nicer and I can go to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Cubs, or should I go in November like last time when the weather isn't as good, but I can see the Giants at MetLife Stadium and the Rangers at Madison Square Garden???
Behind 11 first-half points from Branden Dawson, No. 4 Michigan State leads No. 1 Virginia at halftime, 31-27, in an NCAA East Regional semifinal at Madison Square Garden in New York. Back to the March for WrestleMania XXX with the event where "It All Begins Again" in WrestleMania XX in New York's famous Madison Square Garden. It has been amazing to see how the WWE has transformed in ten years since its last appearance at WrestleMania X...a big stage, pyrotechnics and style of matches. The last match for Brock Lesnar before abandoning the WWE to tryout with the Minnesota Vikings NFL team was a loss to Goldberg, a match WWE officials thought the fans wanted to see. When the match came, the fans were more interested in special guest referee, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Shawn Michaels participated in a remarkable triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event against Triple H and Chris Benoit, a match won by Benoit, who hasn't been talked about since 2007.

Gonna be a NASTY game tonight! They're gonna have to play like they did against COL if not harder!! ~ In what is likely the most important game Madison Square Garden has hosted all season to this point, the Rangers (40-29-4, 84 pts) host the Philadelphia Flyers (38-26-7, 83 pts) in a battle between bitter division rivals who currently sit in second and third place, respectively, in the Metropolitan Division. New York's dramatic overtime win over the Coyotes on Monday night, coupled with the Flyers' 3-2 regulation loss to the Kings, lifted the Rangers one point past Philly and into second place in the division, though the Flyers do have two games in hand--making Wednesday's tilt as crucial as any either team has played all season. The Rangers enter play having won four in a row and five of their last six. Their latest victory was thrilling and took plenty of character to achieve as New York erased deficits of 2-0 early and 3-2 late in the third period to force overtime on Dan Girardi's goal with under fou ...

Jackson Pawns Watch to Raise Dough but where’s the one from Brando September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Michael Jackson was in New York, where he’d just given two concerts, on the 7th and 10th of September, at Madison Square Garden, to which he had brought two of his closest friends and idols: Marlon Brando and Elizabeth. His original idea had been for them to sit onstage like two great Easter Island figureheads flanking the show, but instead they sat in the audience. All three found themselves trapped in the city after the Twin Towers fell. Michael had gotten a call from friends in Saudi Arabia who warned that America was under attack. He hollered down the hallway of his hotel for everyone in his entourage, and for Brando, to leave immediately. Elizabeth was staying at another hotel, the St. Regis, a few blocks away. Now here’s where the story gets complicated. In false version, these three towering icons of American pop culture planned their escape, afraid that they would be the next target. Mic ...
Chris here is some information on the concert...btw tonight i am seeing Dave Goldman's band Shakey Ground in Jersey about 5 or 6 Jayhawks are going In early August, Joplin again appeared on The *** Cavett Show, and a few days later, on August 6, 1970, performed as a surprise guest at the Festival for Peace at Shea Stadium in Queens. Joplin was not on the original roster of performers for the concert, but since she was in New York and her former band, Big Brother, was on the bill, she agreed to do the concert. By some accounts, at least 50,000 fans attended Joplin’s performance, re- portedly aided by a bottle of Southern Comfort whiskey. This concert – also called the Summer Festival for Peace – followed a Winter Festival for Peace that had been staged earlier that year at Madison Square Garden. These concerts were among the first ever in the U.S. to be used for political fund raising and anti-war purposes. Such concerts were not generally seen prior to 1970, but became more common thereafter. ...

Growing your business from “idea” to IPO isn’t that much different from taking a rock band from neighborhood bar gigs to sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. In fact, as a startup entrepreneur, you might want to brush up on Music History and take a few rock ‘n’ roll lessons to heart. Nearly every successful startup shares three common traits with legendary rock stars. They are dramatically different, thrive on collaboration and never stop adapting and learning as they go. Related: 3 Business Lessons From Miley Cyrus and Her Infamous Twerk Be dramatically different. In the early 1970s, Wicked Lester was just another struggling rock band in New York, about to split up because of a lack of success. Then they came up with a new look, stage persona and name. Within two years the renamed band, Kiss, headlined their first world tour. It didn’t happen because they became infinitely better musicians. They were already talented musicians before applying the makeup. Kiss realized that they needed to ...

Beres Hammond, From Jamaica With Love. NEW YORK -- Maybe you'd expect a guy who has perfected the art of musical seduction to look a little less ordinary. In appearance, veteran Jamaican singer Beres Hammond seems completely average. He's a slim man with a neat beard and rectangular wire-rimmed glasses that only recently replaced the owlish ones he has worn for years. His ever-present baseball caps and other hatwear suggest he could be balding. His teeth are a little crooked, and his ears stick out, ever so slightly. But Hammond, 50, hasn't built his career on good looks. The singer-songwriter specializes in romantic songs, and he sings them exceptionally well. Dancehall-style chanting has dominated reggae since the late '80s, but when it comes to actual singers, Hammond is by far the most popular in all the West Indies. His fan base isn't limited to the Caribbean, though: He frequently tours North America, Europe and Japan. Here in New York, he regularly sells out the Theater at Madison Square Garden. To ...
What a night! Too late for this old man, but how can one not watch a basketball game between the Tarheels of UNC and the evil Blue Devils of Duke. Last night took me back as a boy to the early days of TV and Madison Square Garden in the "Big Apple" when I was in high school and college listening to Marty Glickman and the others broadcasting great College Basketball all over this then great country of ours. The last time that any College Basketball team could win both the NCAA and the NIT was the 1950/51 season, and that team was City College of New York. Unfortunately, the last team to do that was my alma mater, the Beavers of City College of New York, and I entered CCNY as a freshmen in 1951, and learned about lacrosse under "Chief" Leon Miller. the Cherokee brother-in-law of the great Jim Thorpe, both of whom starred with the Carlisle Indians of PA. Unfortunately, some of the CCNY "Beavers" were caught up in the basketball scandals of the 1950's for "shaving" points, but they were so good that they co . ...
Cotto-Martinez confirmed Last Updated: 19:45 20/02/14 Sergio Martinez will make the seventh defence of his WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto, it was formally announced on Thursday. Negotiations for the June 7 fight at Madison Square Garden in New York have been protracted with Cotto's team reportedly digging their heels in. However, the 39-year-old champion has resolved to 'give Cotto everything he wants' to make the bout happen, including the first name in the billing of the fight. Martinez has been knocked down in his last three fights against Matthew Macklin, Julio Cesar Chavez jnr and Martin Murray, but came away with the win on each occasion. But with injuries keeping him out of the ring since last April the crown sits uneasily on the Argentinian - although Cotto is no spring chicken either. At 33, the Puerto Rican has enjoyed a stellar career that has seen him reign in three weight classes, however numerous hard fights have taken their toll of late. Cotto snapped a two-fight losing streak ...

Portland Trail Blazers 94 (35-14), New York Knicks 90 (19-30) Once again playing in front of a national television audience, Rip City delivered. With the win, Portland snapped a four-game road losing streak. It was an overall team effort this time and the Blazers really tightened up their defense late in the fourth quarter. That was how they were able to beat the Knicks in Madison Square Garden while only shooting 38% from the field for the game, starting the fourth quarter missing their first eight shots, and committing four turnovers to let New York pull back within one. Nicolas Batum led a balanced offense for Portland, finishing with 20 points (on efficient 9-14 shooting), 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Wesley Matthews got hot early and ended the night with 18 points and 7 rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge had a rough time shooting the ball (going just 5-17 from the field), but still racked up 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. He also hit a tough turnaround jumper over Tyson Chandler with 35.5 seconds rem ...

As the Olympic Games approach, I'm reminded of one day in February during a previous Olympics...February 22, 1980, to be exact. The Iranian Hostage Crisis was at the forefront of the American conscience, the Cold War was still going strong, and the games of the 13th Winter Olympiad was being held in Lake Placid, New York. The USSR hockey team was undefeated in amateur competition since 1960 and was set to take on a group of young upstart college kids that comprised the US Hockey team. Most of the Soviets had been together for 15 years, and had played a series of 3 exhibition games against a team of NHL All-Stars, and after losing the first game, 4-2, they came back to win the other 2 games, 5-4 and 6-0. In fact, on February 9, 1980, in Madison Square Garden, in a pre-Olympic exhibition, the Soviets crushed Team USA, 10-3. On February 22, however, even if you didn't know the difference between a blue line and a clothes line, you were a hockey fan. I remember watching this game. I was 18 at the time, ...
Impact Performance of the Night: Lebron James delivered a masterful performance at Madison Square Garden on Saturday Night, finishing with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the HEAT’s win over the Knicks. James was efficient from the floor, shooting 13-of-22. Nine of James’ 13 makes came in the restricted area. On two separate occasions James knifed through the New York defense, took heavy contact and made circus shots. Both were impressive showcases of the strength James possesses. He also did well to get teammates involved, especially Shane Battier and Dwyane Wade. Battier hit four threes and James assisted on three of them. Wade played exceptional basketball on the offensive end, and James rewarded his running mate by finding him a couple of times for layups behind the Knicks defense. There was nothing the Knicks could do to slow James down. He was defended by a few different players throughout and got the better of the contest each time. The Deciding Run: The HEAT were in control for ...

NEW YORK -- Georgetown didn't care how its losing streak ended, just that it did. Beating No. 7 Michigan State made this elusive win even better. "You lose a couple in a row and life is hard. It's *** " Georgetown coach John Thompson said Saturday after the Hoyas snapped their five-game skid with a surprising 64-60 victory over the Spartans at Madison Square Garden. "It's a good win and I would feel that way regardless of the opponent the way we've been going." Markel Starks, who led Georgetown with 16 points and made a couple of key plays in the final minute, summed up the team's feeling. "It's a relief to get a win," he said. "It feels good, finally." Jabril Trawick came up with two big plays late for the Hoyas (12-9) in the late-season nonconference game that was part of the New York area's celebration of Sunday's Super Bowl. Michigan State (19-3) played without injured frontcourt players Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson and had a tough time shooting. "It's disappointing but not upsetting," Michigan S ...

In today's selection -- from The Burglary by Betty Medsger. On March 8, 1971, eight American citizens led by mild-mannered Haverford College physics professor named William Davidon stole secret records from the offices of the FBI in Media, Pennsylvania. It was perhaps the most powerful single act of nonviolent resistance in American history. These burglars kept their role silent for over forty years: "On the night of March 8, 1971, the eight burglars carried out their plan. Under the cover of darkness and the crackling sounds in nearly every home and bar of continuous news about the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier World Heavyweight Championship boxing match taking place that evening at New York's Madison Square Garden and being watched on television throughout the world, the burglars broke into the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, a sleepy town southwest of Philadelphia. ... World Wide Wrestling Federation/World Wrestling Federation Debut and various feuds (1973–1987) On March 26, 1973, André debuted in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (later World Wrestling Federation) as a fan favorite, defeating Buddy Wolfe in New York's Madison Square Garden.[1][11][19] André was one of professional wrestling's most beloved "babyfaces" throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. As such, Gorilla Monsoon insisted that André was never defeated for 15 years by pinfall or submission prior to WrestleMania III. This, however, is not true. André actually had lost cleanly in matches outside of WWF parameters: a pinfall loss in Mexico to Canek in 1984 and a submission loss in Japan to Antonio Inoki in June 1986.[20][21] He also had sixty-minute time limit draws with the two other major world champions of the day, Harley Race and Nick Bockwinkel. In 1976 André fought professional boxer Chuck Wepner in an unscripted boxer-vs-wrestler fight. The wild fight was shown via telecast as part of the un ...

For you Donna Palumbo While countless rockers started their careers in the New York suburb of Long Island before going on to worldwide success (Billy Joel, Twisted Sister, Steve Vai, Brian Setzer, Blue Öyster Cult, etc.), there have been countless acts that appeared poised for a breakthrough, but for whatever reason, fell short. Many longtime followers of Long Island-based rock would probably agree that tops on the "woulda/coulda/shoulda" list were the Good Rats, a group who played at some of the East Coast's best-known/biggest venues (Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum, the Philadelphia Spectrum) during the '70s, while opening for such big names as Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Styx, Meat Loaf, and Rush, among others. Specializing in a tough form of bar band/hard rock (comparable to Led Zeppelin early on, before getting more commercial), quite a few bandmembers waltzed through the Good Rats' ranks after their formation during the late '60s, but ...

WWE Company history Main article: History of WWE Capitol Wrestling Corporation (1952-1963) Roderick James "Jess" McMahon was a successful boxing promoter who began working with Tex Rickard in 1926. With the help of Rickard, he began promoting boxing at the third Madison Square Garden. A few years prior, professional wrestler Joseph Raymond "Toots" Mondt had created a new challenge of professional wrestling that he called “Slam Bang Western Style Wrestling”. He convinced wrestler Ed Lewis and his manager Billy Sandow to implement this new solution into the wrestling industry. Following this, he formed a promotion with both men and persuaded many wrestlers to sign contracts with their Gold Dust Trio. After much success, a disagreement over power caused the trio to dissolve and, with it, their promotion. Mondt later formed partnerships with several other promoters, including Jack Curley in New York City. Mondt eventually took over the New York wrestling scene, due to the fact Curley was dying, with the a ...
