At least there are some good people out there, please read what Ajagzy had to say about black november. EXPORTING OUR NIGERIAN "AGBERO" STYLE EXTORTION TO HOLLYWOOD. I just finished watching Jeta Amata's riveting movie BLACK NOVEMBER which premiered last week. I bought it for about $13 dollars "On demand" on my Comcast Xfinity system today and I hear it's on all other major US cable providers as well as on iTunes, Amazon, Redbox and Netflix, it was money well spent. It's also open and showing in major movie theaters in Los Angeles and New York and its a story every Nigerian must see. Now I wouldn't bore you with the details of the movie (go and watch it yourselves) but it's a moving thriller wrapped around the injustice of the Niger Delta people showing in full glare how how major oil companies and corrupt Nigerian government officials connived to wreak pain and untold hardship on the people of the Niger Delta during the military era. The film is also star,studded with Jeta's wife Mbong playing the lead r ...
Part 2 of Mike McNamara - the forgotten Australian Ultrarunner. Once again Mike McNamara disappears from history. He was eventually to wind up in New York City but he does not appear on the city census of 1925. Possibly he did try poultry farming in the Mid-West, however by 1928 he was in New York. Reputedly just before the Trans-America race was announced the failure of a partner he had backed with all his money left him close to penury. We have not managed to discover any details of McNamara’s running and walking career in Australia – neither professional nor amateur. However he must have had some experience as a runner or walker in order to contemplate entering a race which would cover the 3,423-miles from Los Angeles to New York. The suspicion must be that in Australia he did not have the time, energy or inclination to develop his running talent. Remember at the age of 24, he had joined the Australian Imperial Force and soon after been sent overseas. There had been no potential coach to ...

25 Interesting (and Odd) Brooklyn Facts 1) While most people know it as simply Brooklyn, this New York borough also goes by the name Kings County and the “Borough of Homes and Churches.” 2) Brooklyn was originally its own separate city. It was not until the turn of the nineteenth century that Brooklyn merged with the City of New York. Many Brooklyn residents called the move “the Great Mistake of 1898.” 3) Brooklyn has approximately 2.5 million residents, which means if it were to be separated from the rest of New York City, Brooklyn would become the 4th most populous U.S. city. 4) Brooklyn is the 7th most populous county in the United States behind such major cities as Los Angeles and San Diego. 5) While physically located on the island, Brooklyn is not considered a part of Long Island. 6) To make matters more confusing, the Brooklyn History Museum was called the Long Island Historical Society up until the 1980s 7) Brighton Beach is home to the largest concentration of Russian immigrants in New Yo ...

Full of sorrow as I just found out my friend Taylor Negron passed away today from a long battle with cancer. When I first moved to Los Angeles not even a year ago, I rented Taylor's condo for 6 months while he was living in New York. He made sure I felt right at home and was such a supporter of me and my career. He was an amazingly talented actor and comedian, perhaps best known for his role as Bruce Willis' nemesis "Milo" in "The Last Boy Scout". For laughs he would always quote lines from that movie for me as he knew how much I loved that film and his character. He was truly one of the nicest, funniest, and most charming human beings I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. RIP Taylor and thanks for the laughs.

I know a bit late but now I finally found time and I hope the right words! New York! My final stop in the USA! New York is the biggest city in the USA with 8,3 million habitants with a population density of 10561 habitants per square kilometre! Los Angeles which is the second largest city in the world has a population density of 3122 habitants per square kilometre. That means that New York City has three times more people on a square kilometre than la. And that is visible! The skyline of NYC is magnificent and impressive. One skyscraper after another. The city is always crowded and if you are in a car there is no way to surpass traffic during the whole day (maybe not at 2 a.m. But you'll get the point ;) )! Fortunately the public transportation of NYC is very good and it will take you wherever you want to go in a short time. Trains and underground lines run 24/7 and very frequently. They took me to all the beautiful places I wanted to see when I didn't intend to walk, as usual :). I walked from Manhattan ...

I could say a lot of things about the Riots and the actions of protesters across America, in areas where it seems to always happen, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Oakland, California, and Washington, D.C., St. Louis Etc...Some may agree, some may not. It is sad that the perpetuation of racism by very few, with constant blame on the race instead of the circumstance. Sad but I don't see an end to it. Nothing anyone says will change the minds of the few that do this for lack of anything better to do, at the expense of the ones of their own race that have to suffer the association with the hoodlums that are doing these things. There are many places to lay the blame. Ultimately it is laid at the feet of the criminals that deny that we have a system of laws and they apply equally to all. Denial of that one fact ,no matter how it is interpreted by any race, will always be met with force. All of my life I have heard of, and seen the riots that made national news. There are no winners when it happens. an ...

Its really interesting that the rug has already traveled to almost 10 countries and more than 30 cities. The question has been raised ,"When are Americans going to get off their keyboards and do something about it?" And that is a fair question. Actually, Americans have gotten up, many times with rallies in Washington, Signs across America on the overpasses, Two Million Bikers to DC, The Tea Party and many,many other grass-root groups that spend time and money getting the word out there. However, there are MANY that still fall within the confines of 'Uninformed Voters". These are the residents of the likes of Detroit, Chicago, Ferguson, New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York and just about any urban area where Welfare is key to the economy. Those are the disinterested. Those are the complacent. Those are the duplicitous dead voters. November 4th showed the nation there are people that can get off thier butts and speak out. That "can and will" take action. Resoundingly. Now we wait. We wait for the feckless Congress to do their job and right the wrong. How long will we wait? How much more can "we the people" take ...

Alright - here it goes! I'm totally putting myself out there! But they say if you want something you got to ask for it! And I want this very badly!!! I'm looking for an investor. More to the point I'm looking for $60K - $80K for a percentage partnership of my LED Night Club / Restaurant menus. (see links below). I can tell you that I've already had two incredible meetings with the executives of Brand Muscle (brandmuscle.com), one of the nation's biggest distributors. And they love it. The reason I need funding is to buy the necessary equipment to finish development and to do small productions. I already have interested clubs and restaurants here in Washington DC that want them ASAP. Two of which are Heist and Josephine. As well as serious interest in New York, Vegas, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Manila, Milan and Hong Kong. pm me for further details - serious inquiries only please.
Wow, it's been an incredible year scouting out the fashion scene for bags and baubles. I took two trips to Los Angeles earlier in the year, one trip to New York this fall, and I continue to order out of Dallas. The trend this year is totes. Messenger bags continue to be hot as well. You will notice structured totes which are great for a professional look and on a trendy note, fringe and animal print are on fire! Western Bling is also very popular. You should match your hardware from your coat, to your jewelry, to your bag whether that be gold or silver. Black leather and boots are also very trendy this season. Remember, it's all about the details! Bags, Bangles & Baubles will be in house at the Moose Lodge in Inver Grove Heights this Saturday, November 8, 2014, for the Deer Widows' Day Out, Noon-4:00PM.

Farewell America How French Intelligence Wrote a Book about the Kennedy Assassination William Turner He was slight and fidgety, with a wispy mustache and fingertips yellowed by countless Gitanes. He called himself Herve Lamarr, but in the twilight world of intelligence that may not have been the name on his baptismal certificate. The Frenchman had called the day before, long distance, saying he had to see me. It was September 1968, three months after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles. I was familiar with Lamarr's project: a book titled Farewell America, which contended that the assassination of John F. Kennedy at Dallas on Nov. 22 was a conspiracy that robbed America of her future. As we sat in the coffee shop of the Fairmont Hotel on top of San Francisco's Nob Hill, I wondered what the great urgency was. Lamarr chitchatted earnestly, but had no punch line. I introduced Lamarr to Jim Rose, who was driving me to the airport to catch a plane for New York. Rose was a pilot who had flown C ...

Peeps. There are bird rescues.that are honorable and real, in every sense of the word. There are also those who pose as rescues.and simply sell bird for profit. These people have learned the art of making money off of a self aware life form. I have even heard of a few supposed rescues that actually purchase birds off of craig's list, and then play the game, of telling you."we have a bird coming in today" that needs a home. I know who they are. :-) I guess in a sense , they are actually doing something good, in that if the bird is lucky enough to be sold to someone that has heart! At times , yes it is all about trial and error. Heads up.There are certain rescues...in New York and Los Angeles, that are not what they claim to be.just be aware. There is a difference between the term rescue and sanctuary. If you need further assistance in this...Please feel free to contact us. love you guys. Michael N the Fids.

ON THIS DATE (47 YEARS AGO) September 18, 1967 - The Who: “I Can See For Miles” b/w “Mary-Anne With The Shaky Hands” (Decca 32206) 45 single is released in the US. "I Can See for Miles" is a song written by Pete Townshend of The Who, recorded for the band's 1967 album, The Who Sell Out. It was the only song from the album to be released as a single, and remains The Who's biggest hit single in the US to date, and their only one to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Recorded in several separate sessions in studios across two continents, the recording of "I Can See for Miles" exemplifies the increasingly sophisticated studio techniques of rock bands in the late 1960s. The backing tracks were recorded in London, the vocals and overdubbing were performed in New York at Talentmasters Studios, and the album was mastered in Los Angeles at the Gold Star Studios. The US Decca single has an overdubbed second bass line. It reached number 10 in the UK and number 9 in the US. Though these figures would ...

This weekend I received a Legend Award from the National Black Arts Foundation in Atlanta. I was given the opportunity to choose musicians to play for the awards ceremony and requested Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio and the great Detroit trumpeter and educator, Marcus Belgrave. Not only did they represent our music with great clarity and depth of purpose, they also showed the diversity of artistic excellence still present in Jazz today. Backstage Marcus and I hung and swapped stories about Ray Charles, Dizzy, Pops and New York. His beautiful wife Joan, also a great singer, spoke about the importance of sound and how she was initially attracted to Marcus by the warmth and distinctiveness of his tone. Anyone who knows Marcus knows that his sheer presence is an act of soul. In addition to the nuggets that come from his horn, no one in the world can verbally cosign an improvised solo as well as he can. He'll drop a "yeah" or a "blow your horn" on you at the perfect time. I accompanied him on the dressing room .. ...

There are moments in your life when things are just right. When worlds converge and the heavens line up in just the right order as to make your wishes come true. For me, that happened fourteen years ago today when Shelly Friedland took my hand in matrimony. We have been blessed, through these past fourteen years, with two wonderful kids, decent health and the love of our family and friends. Every day has not been bliss. We have had ups and we have had downs. We have been together through the deaths of three beloved parents, two grandparents and several close friends. We have seen the births of nieces and nephews, the marriages of friends and relatives. We have watched our children grow and along with them their seemingly unending array of friends that stretch from New York to Los Angeles, Virginia to Georgia, DC to New Jersey. We have had adventures; adventures that have taken us around the US and even beyond its borders. And we have had fun. We have laughed, danced and sung. We have watched sunsets and . ...

Welcome to Flight Number 293, non-stop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax - OH, MY G-D!" You should see the front of my pants!" A passenger in Coach said, "That's nothing. He should see the back of mine!"
Wanted to share, One of the latest letters sent to us by a customer: 😊 Hello, Yesterday on our flight from Los Angeles to New York, my girlfriend an I had a stop-over in Chicago for an hour. With a delay because of rain, that turned into 5 hours. We went into the city on the Orange line and because my brother had visited your restaurant on his trip and raved about the food, we thought we'd eat at your restaurant. We arrived around 4:30pm and loved how many vegetarian options there were. My girlfriend who has Russian heritage was looking forward to trying so many dishes. A few minutes after we ordered our meal, we were notified that our flight was no longer delayed until 8pm, but would be leaving at 5:40pm instead. We informed the server and he said nothing, but grabbed the food from the table and walked into the back. We felt terrible and paid our bill quickly. The server handed my girlfriend a bag of whatever food was ready and we raced to the airport, trying to make it to our flight which was ...

history of camera: The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, or CAMERA, was founded in Washington, DC in 1982 by Winifred Meiselman, a teacher and social worker. Mrs. Meiselman formed CAMERA to respond to the Washington Post’s coverage of Israel’s Lebanon incursion, and to the paper’s general anti-Israel bias. Joining CAMERA’s Executive Board in the early days were such prominent Washington-area residents as Saul Stern and Bernard White. Win also recruited an Advisory Board which included Senators Rudy Boschwitz and Charles Grassley, Congressman Tom Lantos, journalist M. Stanton Evans, Ambassador Charles Lichenstein, Pastor Roy Stewart, and Rabbi David Yellin. Under Win’s leadership CAMERA created chapters in major cities, including New York, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and in 1988 a Boston chapter and office, founded and led by Andrea Levin. Ms. Levin had taught English in inner-city Philadelphia, and later served as associate ...

"Just for the record, West Africa comprises 15 countries, including the island of Cape Verde. Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone have Ebola cases exceeding 600 each. Nigeria has 14. The rest have recorded ZERO cases of Ebola. In the three worst hit countries, MORE THAN 99% of the population DO NOT have the disease. Regarding Nigeria (a handful of cases out of 170 million), canceling a business trip to Lagos because of Ebola is like suspending your business plans for New York, Chicago or Los Angeles for fear of being gunned down by a police officer. Neither makes sense, even though you're 20 times more likely to be killed by a police officer in the United States (400 deaths so far this year) than by Ebola in Nigeria (5 this year)." - Yaw Owusu Let the Congregation hear, as have ears to hear!

This one goes out to Ferguson, St. Louis, Los Angeles, New York and all cities in-between. I was all set to do a different song but I was so troubled about the events going on in our cities and around the world I had to sing about hope. I had to address my pain. I pray that this touches someone who needs it. I also pray for the families seeking justice and all those affected. Thanks for your continued support on my album ReVerb Please share share and share and remember to Love One Another. Because that's enough.
Haircuts for the homeless. Every weekend, 30-year-old Mark Bustos wanders the streets of New York to find people who look as though they could do with a haircut and who might otherwise not be able to afford it. His haircuts for the homeless was inspired after taking a trip in May 2012, to his native country of The Philippines where he snipped away on underprivileged kids. He said the trip gave him the idea and momentum to continue the good deeds back in the States. "The feeling was so rewarding, I decided to bring the positive energy back to New York City." He has also done the same for poor people living in Jamaica, Costa Rica and Los Angeles. "I do believe people with a proper, professional haircut receive more respect than those who do not have a proper haircut,' Bustos told Today. Having a proper haircut also gives the recipient much more confidence."

MUSIC HISTORY 101 AUGUST 22, 1961 - Born on this day in Northridge, Los Angeles, California: The Bangles drummer/vocalist DEBBI PETERSON Debbi and her guitarist sister Victoria "Vicki" Peterson grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Debbi established her first band while still in high school. The Bangles' original lineup formed in 1981, when Vicki and Debbi responded to an advertisement that guitarist/vocalist Susanna Hoffs had placed in a local Los Angeles newspaper, The Recycler. Taking the name The Bangs, the girls rounded out their ranks with bassist Annette Zilinskas and released an EP, "Getting Out of Hand", on their own independent label, Downkiddie. They had to change their name early the following year to The Bangles, since there was already a New York-based group called The Bangs. After an appearance on L.A. deejay Rodney Bingenheimer's "Rodney on the ROQ" compilation and a series of local concerts, Miles Copeland signed The Bangles to the IRS subsidiary Faulty Products and landed them an opening s ...
A.L.S. stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a neurobiological disorder that attacks the motor neurons that enable communication between the brain and control of a person's voluntary muscles. No one knows the cause of ALS. There are many researchers with different theories. What is A.L.S. ? (Source Wayne Lampe, taken from the internet) " I will use an example with something almost common to everyone these days, a cell phone. When you have a good connection, you can speak and hear the other person clear from coast to coast. You can do this because of the network of towers across the nation. With A.L.S., the motor neurons are the towers. They stop receiving signals and they control the muscles. The body still finds way to get through to muscles but it is delayed. It is like calling from Florida to California, but by way of New York, Chicago, Denver then Los Angeles. People cannot live without water and muscles cannot not live without communication. Once . ...
Vantage Point Articles and Essays by Dr. Ron Daniels “State of Emergency” in Black America The Killing of Black Men Continues A Call to Action [For publication the week of August 18, 2014] When will it stop? The police killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, coming on the heals of the killing of Eric Garner, an unarmed Black man by a policeman’s choke hold in Staten Island, New York, is yet another painful, traumatic reminder of the long history of occupation, torture, abuse and killing of Black people in America, particularly Black men. Indeed, within hours of the killing of Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, an unarmed Black man with a history of mental problems, was killed in Los Angeles under suspicious circumstances. It doesn’t matter that there is an African American President of the United States or that Blacks are mayors of major American cities, run Fortune 500 companies or are pace setters as high paid and adored hip hop moguls, entertainers and at ...

```Natural killer cells can treat leukemia in kids``` New York, Aug 19 In a first, researchers have shown that select immune-system cells from young patients with leukemia can be multiplied in the lab - creating an army of natural killer (NK) cells that can be used to destroy cancer cells. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer of childhood. This disease hinders the development of healthy blood cells while cancer cells proliferate. “In our study, we used NK cells and ALL cells from the same pediatric patients. We found that autologous natural killer cells will destroy the patient's leukemia cells," claimed Nora Heisterkamp from the Saban Research Institute of Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. To help the NK cells identify their target as leukemia cells, researchers also added a monoclonal antibody. Researchers can design and produce antibodies called monoclonal antibodies (mAb) that specifically target a certain protein like the ones found on cancer cells. “These results are ve ...
JEWS JOIN THE Democratic Party 1880: Rothschild agents begin fomulating a series of programs predominantly in Russia, but also in Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. These programs resulted in the slaughter of thousands of innocent Jews, causing approximately 2 million to flee, mainly to New York, but also to Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Los Angeles. The reason these programs were initiated, was to create a large Jewish base in America, who when they arrived, would be educated to register as Democrat voters. Some twenty years later, this would result in in a massive Democratic power base in the United States and be used to elect Rothschild front men such as Woodrow Wilson, to the Presidency, to carry out the bidding of the Rothschild's. “The History Of The House Of Rothschild”- By Andrew Hitchcock here..
I LOVE L.A.! Until recent years, downtown Los Angeles had spent several decades falling out of popularity and into neglect and decay. Although always "overshadowed" to some degree by Hollywood and the nearby Southern California beach lifestyle, I recall Downtown being a vibrant place filled with theaters, restaurants and nightlife -- a suitably smaller-scale urban environment of the type those of us who relocated here from places such as New York and Chicago were accustomed. Today, with a bustling Arts District, richly detailed restorations of grand old movie palaces, all manner of skyscraping development under construction (or in the planning) and improving public transportation, the city is experiencing a breathtaking renaissance. In this gorgeously edited and scored short film by Ian Wood (www.IanWood.com), who deployed a GoPro camera affixed to a remote-controlled mini-helicopter, downtown L.A.'s under-appreciated yet classic and remarkably varied 20th century architecture is revealed intimately and s ...
This Is Y Vaccination Is Sooo Important: Here are three of the diseases that have come back due to the anti-vaccine movement: 1. Measles After the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, incidences of the diseases dropped by 99%. Since then, there have been an average of 60 measles cases per year in the U.S., but that number increased to 222 cases in 2011. Outbreaks have been reported in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Los Angeles. 2. Mumps An ongoing outbreak at Ohio State University has resulted in 23 confirmed cases, and there was a similar outbreak at New York's Fordham University last month, with over a dozen students affected. Before the vaccine was introduced in 1967, there were 300,000 cases of mumps per year. Although that number sharply declined in later years to 200 incidences per year, in 2006 alone, there were 6,584 cases of mumps. Another outbreak in 2009 led to 3,400 cases. 3. Whooping cough At the height of the epidemic, whooping cough afflicted more than 250,000 children ...
SCHERZER WINS 12TH, AND NATHAN STRIKES OUT 3 IN THE 9TH!!! Nick Castellanos drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a double in the sixth inning and Max Scherzer won his fourth straight decision, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Scherzer (12-3) tied teammate Rick Porcello and New York's Masahiro Tanaka for the league lead in wins. He allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings and struck out 11. It was the fourth time this season and 22nd in his career that the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner had double digits in strikeouts. Scherzer, the winning pitcher in the All-Star game, is 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts since giving up 10 runs over four innings in an 11-4 home loss to Kansas City on June 17. That came just five days after the seven-year veteran posted his first complete game and shutout in the major leagues with a three-hitter against the Chicago White Sox. Joba Chamberlain gave up a run on Josh Hamilton's sacrifice fly in the e ...
A few years ago, I came to this city with no family in the area and very few friends. New York was new to me and the only way I knew how to explore it was to lace up my Vomeros, sign up with Run Club, and hit the streets. Since then I have put in over 3,000 miles on the streets of New York with my running family. My humbling introduction to Run Club NY was in the form of Cat Hill repeats on a humid July evening with Coach Angela's 9:30 group. It was a bit of a culture shock because the running culture in Los Angeles is very chill and relaxed. There were no hill repeats at Run Club LA. Just get your 3-5 miles in, high-five each other and drive home. New York is different. New Yorkers take running seriously. Run Club NY was the perfect representation of that culture. If it took sprinting up Harlem Hill in a torrential downpour to get best out of these runners, then we were going to do it. No questions asked. Through this ordeal, we have to remember that we are not losing our home or our running family. We . ...
JULY RECOMMENDED READING LIST - This month’s recommended reading list is inspired by the upcoming Pasadena AxS Festival Book # 3: Batchelder Tilemaker by Robert Winter Ernest Batchelder's ceramic tilemaking enterprise began as a modest backyard venture in rural Pasadena, California but quickly grew to national prominence. In 1908 this enterprising young man left a prestigious teaching position to start his own school and factory, with the goal of establishing a West Coast guild of craftspeople. By 1930 the Batchelder-Wilson Company had showrooms in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, as well as representation in virtually every major city in the United States. New York, Minneapolis, and Vancouver hosted major Batchelder architectural ceramic installations.
RIP, Charlie Haden The jazz great loved a gorgeous song. By Fred Kaplan Charlie Haden, one of the greatest, most innovative bass players in jazz, died today, at age 76, after a long illness. Fred Kaplan is the author of The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War and 1959: The Year Everything Changed. He was often called a “free jazz” musician because of his association with Ornette Coleman, but Haden was above all a romantic; he loved a gorgeous song, and when he played one, he didn’t want to be boxed in by the standard chord changes, he wanted to take the music where he felt it should go. I first interviewed him in 2002, when he was celebrating his 65th birthday by playing a week of duets—each night with a different pianist—at the Blue Note jazz club in New York. “I’d been playing in a lot of bands,” he recalled of his early days in Los Angeles in the late 1950s, “and often I’d feel like improvising not on the chords but on the melody or the rhythm o ...
Knicks First Take Tired of Waiting for Melo? Here's a possible Explanation Carmelo Anthony has been really pushing for Lebron James to join him in New York and with that, is the cause for Phil Jackson's trade talks with Philadelphia and other teams to make cap room. According to the New York Post, it is Carmelo's dream to play with LeBron in New YoRK. Not Miami. Not Los Angeles. But to play in Madison Square Garden. Phil has been in talks with teams trying to ship out the expiring deals of both Andrea Bargnani and Amare Stoudemire without taking any contracts back. Melo has been holding out with the faint hope that Phil can pull off the miracle or miracles, meanwhile LeBron is scheduled to meet with Pat Riley and Miami Heat Officials today in Las Vegas. According to Chris Broussard, the meeting is set to to include Head Coach Erik Sploestra, Owner Mickey Arison & Dwayne Wade. Chris Sheridan of Sheridan Hoops has reported that its a 90% chance that LeBron will return to Cleveland. Sources below:
This radical reinvention of Norman Mailer’s novel Ancient Evenings is an epic story of regeneration and rebirth, set in three major American cities – Los Angeles, Detroit and New York. A collaboration between visual artist Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler, the film was conceived as a contemporary opera that combines traditional modes of narrative cinema with filmed elements of performance and sculpture. Barney reconstructs Mailer’s hypersexual story of Egyptian gods and the seven stages of reincarnation alongside the rise and fall of the American car industry.
Lemay drew up a war plan which involved dropping “the entire stockpile of atomic bombs in a single massive attack” on the Soviet Union. The Washington Post later quoted the General as stating, “Every major American city – Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles – will be reduced to rubble. Similarly, the principal cities of the Soviet Union will be destroyed.”9 According to then Defence Secretary Robert McNamara, Lemay was “absolutely certain” that “the US was going to have to fight a nuclear war with the Soviet Union” and that “we should fight it sooner rather than later.”9 Equally disturbing as the super-hawks at the Pentagon were the numerous academics – people who considered themselves highly rational – who advocated a similar strategy. Most found their home at the Rand Corporation. One of Rand’s most notorious strategists was Herman Kahn. He believed that the US atomic arsenal was a wasting resource. So long as the Soviet Union continued to buil ...
Songwriter Gerry Goffin, who penned chart-topping songs with his then-wife Carole King, has died at the age of 75 in Los Angeles. He wrote dozens of hits over two decades, including The Loco-Motion, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. He was inducted, along with King, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. In a statement, King said Goffin was her "first love" and had a "profound impact" on her life. "His words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn't know how to say." Born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn in 1939, Goffin married King when he was 20 and she was 17. They had their first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, sung by the Shirelles, shortly afterwards. After their divorce in 1968, Goffin continued writing songs, including a hit for Whitney Houston, Saving All My Love for You, in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Goffin, who confirmed he died from natural causes. He had five children and six grandchildren. A statement from the Rec ...
NBCSports.com Report: Lebron James and his wife ‘love Los Angeles’ Lebron James’ season is over, and that means another free agent frenzy is brewing. The Lakers are reportedly waiting to let LeBron choose their next coach, and I don’t believe it’s coincidence a report about LeBron’s unlimited options used the Clippers as its primary example. Among the cities lining up to lure LeBron from the Heat, Los Angeles seems to be at the forefront. Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports: a source said James and his wife, Savannah, love Los Angeles. Lebron James also is close with Clippers point guard Chris Paul and he admires coach Doc Rivers. Spears is a reliable reporter, and I’m convinced he’s right: LeBron loves Los Angeles. I know LeBron also loves Miami. I bet he loves New York, too. (Sit down, Knicks fans.) There are probably several cities LeBron enjoys. That doesn’t mean he’s leaving the Heat. The Clippers are a non-starter unless Donald Sterling no longer owns the team. Although that seems lik ...
Push Across America Ryan Chalmers’ 3,300-mile trip began in Los Angeles and ended in New York. Only he didn’t make the journey on a plane or train; he completed it in his wheelchair. Born with spina bifida and unable to fully use his legs, the 24-year-old wheelchair racer and Paralympian agreed to “Push Across America,” as his campaign was called, to raise awareness about what people with disabilities can accomplish. It took 71 grueling days in which Chalmers endured 13 flat tires and severe muscle pain from pushing his body beyond its usual limits. Yet, as he told Yahoo Sports when he arrived in New York City on June 16, 2013, “You see a little kid at the finish line who’s just smiling at you…it makes the injury and pain go away. For me, that’s what helped me push through.” A film crew documented Chalmers’ trek and he plans to speak about it around the country. His message: “This isn’t supposed to be easy. Not something of this magnitude…But you just have to embrace the di ...
The Kings hoisted the Stanley Cup tonight for the second time in three years after Alec Martinez's goal at 14:43 of the second overtime gave Los Angeles a series win in five games. For the third time in four losses, the New York Rangers blew a lead. This time, it came when Marian Gaborik's third period power play goal knotted things at 2-2. The loss means New York is still seeking its first NHL title since 1994. Don't blame Henrik Lundqvist, though. He had 21 saves in the overtime periods, some of them heroic.
Ranger sniper Marty St. Louis added a marker a little later in the frame to give New York a two goal advantage. Kings Goaltender Jonathan Quick faced 19 shots stopping 17 attempts guarding the goal for Los Angeles. Dustin Brown's lone tally pulled the Kings within a goal at the 11:14 mark of the 2nd Period but it wasn't enough to counter the Rangers attack. The Rangers' Derek Stepan may have kept the series alive for New York as his quick instinctive thinking in swatting a puck away from a goal mouth scramble kept his team in the lead. "I don't swat that puck out of the way, they ti ...
I just hope and pray the NY Rangers can come back and win this Stanley Cup Final series with Los Angeles. LA is a very non passionate sports town (especially for hockey) and area unlike us folks in the Northeast Corridor like Phila, Pittsburgh, NY and Boston. We are passionate, intense, insane, live and die with our teams here in the Northeast Corridor. Would make me sick to my stomach to see another LA world title in pro sports, especially NHL. Half the dam fans at the games in LA are from New York!! If the Kings win the series it would be the 3rd Stanley Cup title for Southern California since 2007. Pathetic!!!
Opponents of the Washington Redskins' name have once more made it clear: They're not going to stop and they plan to target more than just football fans with an ad scheduled to run during the NBA Finals. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation will run a one-minute ad Tuesday night during Game 3 between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. The ad, part of the Change the Mascot campaign, will air only in Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Sacramento. Meanwhile, the Redskins hired a lobbying firm. According to Politico, in the disclosure announcing the hiring of McGuire Woods Consulting in late May, it stated their responsibilities will be "discussions of team origins, history and traditions, Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and youth sports, activities of Original Americans' Foundation." The Redskins used former political consultant Lanny Davis to combat some of the criticism last year. They've also tried to diffuse some of the controversy by starting a foundation designed ...
The Rangers' Cup is three quarters empty. New York's first home Stanley Cup Final match in 20 years on Monday night was a dud, a deflating 3-0 Game 3 loss at a silent and uninspired Garden marked by the brilliance of Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick and more costly mistakes by Alain Vigneault's clu…
Things that can happen in Paris, but (usually) don't happen in New York or Los Angeles: At 2 a.m., when the law says "last call," the bar owner opens your just-arrived party a bottle of wine. When the four pretty, twenty-something women you arrived with ask if it's okay to dance, and maybe even on top of the bar, the bar owner says okay, and turns up the music. (The bar is the size of an American bar's rest room. The music is an acoustic white man version of Otis Redding's "Too Hard to Handle.") When the women ask if they can play music from your iPhone, the bar owner plugs it into his stereo system. When you play the Jackson 5, and Aretha Franklin, and James Brown, the seven other customers all get up and start dancing, too. The bar owner opens more bottles, and pours more wine. When you leave, the bar owner says, "Thank you for your music." On your walk home down ancient, deserted streets, the lone 45 year old woman from the bar follows you on her bicycle and says, in severely broken English, "I'm sorr ...
Early All-Star voting: AL 1B- Miguel Cabrera, Detroit. I wanted to vote Jose Abreu (Chicago), but couldn't do it. Miggy is the bigger star right now. 2B- Ian Kinsler, Detroit. Batting average is not as high as Robinson Cano (Seattle), but overall game is superior. 3B- Josh Donaldson, Oakland. Clearly the best in the game. SS- Derek Jeter, New York. For sentimental purposes only. Alexei Ramirez (Chicago) is the best SS in the AL right now. C- Derek Norris, Oakland. Close call, but Matt Wieters (Baltimore) is injured, and Kurt Suzuki (Minnesota) isn't All-Star material. OF- Mike Trout, Los Angeles. Slowed down recently due to injury, but still the best overall player in the game. OF- Jose Bautista, Toronto. Really bouncing back from an injury at the end of last year. OF- Michael Brantley, Cleveland. Has separated himself from the rest of the amazingly mediocre outfielders in the AL. DH- Nelson Cruz, Baltimore. For the power stats, which are insane. Couldn't go wrong with Edwin Encarnacion (Toronto), Victor ...
The assassination of Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy, a United States Senator and brother of assassinated President John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy, took place shortly after midnight on June 5, 1968, in Los Angeles, California, during the campaign season for the United States Presidential election, 1968. After winning the California and South Dakota primary elections for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, Kennedy was shot as he walked through the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel and died in the Good Samaritan Hospital twenty-six hours later. Sirhan Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian/Jordanian immigrant, was convicted of Kennedy's murder and is serving a life sentence for the crime. Sirhan's lawyers have released statements claiming evidence that he was framed.[2] The shooting was recorded on audio tape by a freelance newspaper reporter, and the aftermath was captured on film.[3] Kennedy's body lay in repose at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York for two days before a funeral Mass wa ...
The absurd style of comedy portrayed by the cast of Seinfeld delighted audiences during the "show about nothing's" nine season run. Unlike anything that was on television at the time, Seinfeld elevated the day-to-day lives of four friends to new comedic heights, making it one of the most successful sitcoms ever made. Here are five facts about Seinfeld you might not already know. 1) Even though Seinfeld takes place in New York and frequently shows scenes of the cast out and about in town, it was shot almost entirely in Los Angeles. 2) In the original cast, Elaine is nowhere to be seen. After adding in a female part, actresses like Rosie O’Donnell and Patricia Heaton auditioned for the role. 3) Kramer, a fan favorite on the show, often elicited wild applause from the studio audience. In order to keep up with the pacing of the show, the audience had to be asked to refrain from clapping after his scenes. 4) Seinfeld eventually went on to become the only show outside of the Super Bowl to command advertisers ...
... it has emerged that Mr Obama was among a 1981 intake of transfers to New York's Columbia University that was at the time branded one of the worst ever. The president, who moved from Occidental Community College in Los Angeles, was among 67 students whose average combined math and verbal score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test is a 1,100, according to a report obtained by Breitbart News. By comparison, Mr Bush -- who earned a history degree from Yale in 1968 -- got 1206 out of a possible 1600 points in the same test he took at Andover boarding school in Massachusetts.
Anyone else think Miami ruined the NBA? Before the big 3 Howard was leading the Magic fairly well, didnt have a problem there. Chris Paul was playing for the Hornets, the team who used to be in NC where Paul grew up, he dreamed of playing for them. All of a sudden he wanted to play in New York with Melo or Los Angeles with Kobe Carmelo Anthony was fine in Denver, leading them to the playoffs not getting a ring but the west is hard to get through. Brooklyn insanely over paid Gerald Wallace and Kris Humphries hoping theyd be better The Knicks tossed a huge contract at Tyson Chandler to get a dominant center, he fell off very fast. Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers two teams mixed with good veterans and good young guys filling their roles, fell off very fast due to other teams getting stars to team up. If the "big 3" never formed wed still have a much more competitve NBA and players would still be real... not running around like babies wanting to team with other super stars to go for a title.
Friendly Stanley Cup Wager: If the Rangers win, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti has promised to sing "New York, New York,'' on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!'' But if the Kings prevail, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio must sing "I Love L.A.'' If the Rangers win, LA Police Chief Charlie Beck will buy lunch for NYC Police Commissioner Bill Bratton at Langer’s Deli in Los Angeles. If the Kings win, Bratton will buy lunch for Beck at Katz’s Deli in New York.
Fun Fact: during this year's Stanley Cup Finals, its cheaper for a New York Rangers fan to fly from New York to Los Angeles and watch the game, then it is for him to stay home and watch the game at Madison Square Garden.
From USA TODAY: "So as the teams prepare to open the Stanley Cup Final tonight at Staples Center, does the New York-Los Angeles rivalry matter when it's on ice? We loved Walt Frazier vs. Jerry West; Bob Welch vs. Reggie Jackson and Goose Gossage vs. Ron Cey. But will Anze Kopitar vs. Henrik Lundqvist give us chills? The answers, depending on who you ask, are *** yes," "Yes," "I hope so," "Maybe" and "What exactly is icing again?" = Well, James Baumann, SVP Media in New York for the Ad Council, and I both say, *** yes, and let's put some skin in this Stanley Cup and make a $250 bet on our teams for good causes!" If James' beloved New York Rangers win the coveted Stanley Cup, then I have to send $250 to his designated nonprofit, Team for Kids, a major charity of the New York City Marathon which raises money for Youth and Community Services programs. If the razor-sharp Los Angeles Kings win their second Stanley Cup, as they surely will, then James will send $250 to The Mary Magdalene Project which has ...
We celebrate the life of Yuri Kochiyama, powerful presence in the struggle for liberation and social justice. Yuri was a comrade of Baba Omowale El Hajj Malik Shabazz (Malcolm X). Riding Across America By Weronika Kwapisz Translated by Triumph of Westchester (Adriana Scarpelli) Entry Three: The West One month has passed since I started my journey in the saddle of a Triumph Bonneville - wandering throughout the wild prairies of North America. Each state is a new surprise to me. As Europeans we are familiar with the more well known places such as New York or Los Angeles, but states such as Colorado, Utah and Arizona are less familiar…and that is a pity. In particular, Colorado and Utah knocked me to my knees with spectacular views and wonderful trails that run through the National Parks. In contrast, Arizona tried literally to knock me down, welcoming me with thunderstorms and winds that forced me to drive at a sixty degree angle…nice, right?! With that, brisk temperatures hit below 41 degrees F. Pure bliss, isn’t it? But here’s something to laugh at, Las Vegas is 102 degrees F...in the shade!! And at such a temperature I began to yearn for the cold! I’m glad the Bonnie c . ...
The Dodgers-Giants rivalry is a sports rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants ( Better Known As The Halloween Crew ) baseball teams of Major League Baseball (MLB). It is regarded as one of the most competitive and longest-standing rivalries in American baseball, with some observers considering it the greatest baseball rivalry of all time. The rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants began in the late 19th century when both clubs were based in the New York City area. The Dodgers played in Brooklyn (then a separate city, before being incorporated as a borough of Greater New York in 1898) and the Giants played at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. After the 1957 season, Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley decided to move the team to Los Angeles for financial and other reasons. Along the way, he managed to convince Giants owner Horace Stoneham (who was considering moving his team to Minnesota) to preserve the rivalry by bringing his team to California as well. New York baseball fans were stu ...
Roberto Bolano: "Literature, especially in Latin America, and I suspect in Spain as well, means success, by which, of course, I mean social success: massive print runs; translations into more than thirty languages (I can name twenty languages, but beyond twenty-five I run into trouble, not because I doubt that language number twenty-six exists, but because it's hard for me to imagine the Burmese publishing industry or Burmese readers quivering with emotion at the magical-realist escapades of Eva Luna); a house in New York or Los Angeles; dinners with the rich and famous (as a result of which we learn that Bill Clinton can recite whole paragraphs of Huckleberry Finn by heart, or that President Aznar reads Cernuda); making the cover of Newsweek and landing six-figure advances." from "The Myths of Cthulhu" in The Insufferable Gaucho (ND, 2010)
