PARTING SHOT... It’s no secret. I’m a Democrat, and proud of it. But, lately, I admit, I’ve fallen in love with two Republicans. Both of them former governors of New York, and both of them dead. First, Teddy Roosevelt. Who, of course, was also president. He was not only a colorful character, and the youngest man to serve as president. He was a great populist and great reformer, who never hesitated to use the powers of the presidency. Teddy took on Wall Street with a passion. He busted up the trusts. He stood up for workers against the big corporate bosses, and fought for miners against mine owners. Second, Nelson Rockefeller. Who never made it to president. But who was a strong supporter of the arts. Built Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, and MOMA. He was also an early Civil Rights supporter, big friend of Martin Luther King Jr’s – and arranged and paid for his funeral in Atlanta. Teddy Roosevelt and Nelson Rockefeller. This Democrat would vote for either one of them today. Why can’t Republ ...

The continuing story from "My Experiences of Studying Abroad" (preliminary title/draft) Museums In Washington D.C., I have been to the Smithsonian Museum, Monuments of the War of Vietnam and Korean War, Arlington Cemetery, and in New York, I have been to the Central Park, MOMA, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Lincoln Center, and Frick Collection. The station of Washington D.C. was just like a shopping mall, but was a very pleasant two-story structure and enjoyable in many ways. There was an interesting staircase with spirals. The stairs were so elegant and beautiful. You may not able to see this kind in Japan, and I wish to have the chance to see it again in the future, hopefully. In the Arlington Cemetery, there they had some tours in the cemetery. There was too much room in the cemetery just to visit and to walk around yourselves. Basically, I understood that their basic religion was Christian, but it seemed they didn’t stick to one single religion and accepting others too in the ceme ...

The last 2 days of shows is why I have been going to the theater for decades. Act One at Lincoln Center was just. plain wonderful. It will win best new play. Tony Shaloub was terrific and so was Andrea Martin who I did Charlie Brown with in the year one.I went backstage to say hello and there was Ellen Burstyn who complemented me on my vest. I then saw Brian Cranston as LBJ in All The Way. He was fab and so was the production. Today was Hedwig with Neil Patrick Harris. Although I didn't care for the book he was amazing. I love New York theater. Yes I do!

Mark Hayes is well known to New York audiences. Some of you may remember him conducting the world premieres of his "Te Deum" at Carnegie Hall in 2007, "The American Spirit" at Lincoln Center in 2011, and a new setting of "The Gettysburg Address" at Avery Fisher Hall last year, which Empire City Men's Chorus will be performing at our spring concerts, "A More Perfect Union" (May 16-18). Now with over 850 compositions under his belt, Hayes splits his time between his home and music publishing business in Kansas City, Missouri and a busy touring and recording schedule. He is known for drawing on American styles of music in his choral compositions, though he was educated and has worked in a number of different countries.

Composers Datebook for April 26, 2014 Saturday, April 26 Michael Hersch's Symphony No. 2 On today’s date in 2002, Mariss Jansons led the Pittsburg Symphony in the premiere performance of the Second Symphony written by a then 32-year-old American composer named Michael Hersch. Hardly a child prodigy, Michael Hersch was introduced to classical music at age 18 by his brother Jamie, who showed him a videotape of Georg Solti conducting Beethoven's Fifth. That experience shook him. "It scrambled everything.” Hersch recalled. “That's when I knew that I was to be a composer... My whole life started over at that moment." Hersch certainly made up for lost time, exhibiting an uncanny ability to master both the piano and the intricacies of contemporary compositional techniques in less than a decade. His first success as a composer came when his “Elegy for Strings” won a major prize and was conducted by Marin Alsop at Lincoln Center in New York in 1997. Since then his works have been commissioned and perform ...
The best performance space in New York is probably Lincoln Center's Appel Room (formerly the Allen Room) on floors 5 and 6 of the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. The room is intimate. The stage is in front of giant windows overlooking Central Park and 59th Street. Through these windows I see night and lights when I attend performances of "The American Songbook" series" in January and February. Last night, when I arrived for a performance of the "Jazz in Popular Song" series, the sky was light. During the performance, the sun went down as city lights went up. The show presented the music of George Gershwin. Michael Feinstein was host and vocalist, assisted by guest vocalists Catherine Russell, Allan Harris, and Carole J. Buford. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks provided the music. I am a fan of Feinstein as well as of Russell, whom I have often seen as a Feinstein guest. Harris, who reminds one of a guitar-playing Nat Cole, gave meaningful interpretations to several Gershwin songs. It was a specia ...
Every day, I make decisions about how to spend my budgeted dollars for live performance. Today, I shelled out $111 for two tickets to the Academy of American Poets 12th Annual poetry reading event at Alice Tulley Hall at Lincoln Center. I heard the following peeps read poetry: Billy Crudup, Tina Fey, Kevin Kline, Alicia Florrick, Parker Posey, Esperanza Spalding, Patrick Stewart and Merly Streep. It's New York, people.

eld Theatre, a new Ziegfeld Theatre opened as a single-screen movie house. Located at 141 West 54th Street, it is one of the last large-scale movie palaces built in the United States. Constructed by Emery Roth & Sons from designs by Irving Gershon and sumptuous red-carpeted interior designs by John J. McNamara, it has 1,131 seats (825 seats in the orchestral section and 306 seats in the tiered rear section). Change is a comin’ for Fall ’14. Today IMG announced its plans to revamp the frenetic circus that is New York Fashion Week via redesigned Lincoln Center venues with smaller audience capacities and bigger backstage spaces. The hope? That the update will reduce the presence of crowds, celebrity stalkers, miscellaneous non-fashion-related showgoers, aspiring street-style stars hoping to get papped, and general riffraff that often turns the delight that is NYFW into a bit of a hassle (to put it lightly) for buyers, journalists, stylists, and other industry professionals. Yesterday The Wall Street Journal reported that it’s going to be decidedly harder to get tickets this season. An IMG representative told the paper that media guests will be cut by 20 percent in an effort to focus on attendees who are “of value to the designer.”

The launch of the Russian Sputnik Satellite in 1957 was not only the start of the “Atomic Age” and space exploration, but it was also the birth of a design icon – the sputnik chandelier. From that moment, the world has been fascinated with the Sputnik satellite’s unmistakable silhouette, and light fixtures emulating that same silhouette began sprouting up everywhere. Today the same coveted fixtures can still be found, but interested buyers must pay a premium. In 1963, Dr. Hans Rath of J & L Lobmyer of Vienna designed 11 starburst chandeliers (pictured below) as a gift from the Austrian government to the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. I remember being able to see the chandeliers when illuminated from my building across the street back when I still lived in New York. What a sight it is! image via Graham Turnbull The Sputnik in Homes Today In the late 50s and early 60s, the Sputnik chandelier was most often seen in ro
Snow in New York! Nothing stuck on the ground but on parked cars. OK, I got 8 from Becky: 1) I am named after my grandmothers: Caroline B. Reed, and Pearl Kraner. 2) Like my daughter, I have loved being a mother. I loved having my kids home; especially loved "snow" days. Apart from my salvation, my kids were the greatest gift God gave me. I treasured their growing up and I treasure the adults they are. 3) I had a pet monkey named Jerry when I was a kid. He slept with us in bed. 4) In 2014 I will celebrate my 50th birthday in Jesus. 5) I know what mint "cheese" is. (It is mint after it has been pressured cooked to extract the oil. The cookers are huge - 4-5 ft across. Look it up.) 6) I used to take an iron rod and while standing on the fence, poke holes in the ice of the watering trough for the cows. I never gave a cow an extra nostril. 7) I am writing a children's book. 8) I want someday to take a jet to New York, have a limo waiting, stay at the Ritz, get dolled up, go to a swanky restaurant, and then go to a gala at Lincoln Center. Later I want to go to Broadway, and ...

Look, in New York there's a very large Hasidic Jewish neighborhood in the Borough Park area in Brooklyn. Large Chinese one around the Canal Street area. Italians are on Mulberry Street, just north of Chinatown. Mexicans like the 14th Street area in Manhattan, near Union Square. Dominicans north of 137th Street and Broadway. Blacks around 125th Street and Eight Avenue. But free spirits like Greenwich Village and Soho, while musicians thrive around 66th and Broadway, near The Lincoln Center. And there are many others. In a huge city like New York with many cultures, enough people still prefer to live in communities with their own people. Or are they being forcefully segregated? D/
Bill Cunningham posted pictures of the past week of Fashion Week in the NY Times today but he got scooped by Humans of New York. Tacky, tacky, girls. Wear a new outfit if you're going to troll for photographers at Lincoln Center during Fashion Week!

I've tried to get to this thing in remote no-go northern Mali, and now it's tomorrow at Lincoln Center in New York?!
I got back home last night at midnight from spending 4 great days in New York City with my daughter - Alicia, niece - Liz Gilbert and sister-in-law - Judy Gilbert. The trip was to celebrate my retirement:) We all stayed with Liz and had a wonderful time. Some of the highlights were: a beautiful Harbor dinner cruise and seeing the Statue of Liberty and skyline lit up at night, Rockerfeller Center, Tiffany's, Trump Tower, Carnegie Hall, St. Patrick's Church, walking in Central Park and seeing where John Lennon lived, being at the top of The Empire State Building at midnight, going to the Broadway Shows "Once" (so good) and "Chicago" (wonderful), going to Sardi's after one of the plays and watching Tom Hanks leave the theater he was performing in, the Lincoln Center, riding the subway, riding with the crazy New York cab drivers, walking forever (long blocks), eating great food and experiencing the New York life and culture. We had great weather until yesterday morning when we were going to the 911 Memori ...

Wow what an unforgettable week. My children graduated from High School and their graduations took place at Lincoln Center and the Great Hall at Cooper Union. That's what I love about New York, it has so much history and ordinary people can be part of the historical fabric.
In support of his sixth studio album, From Here To Now To You, Jack played two very intimate acoustic shows where he performed songs from his new record for the first time last week at London’s Tabernacle in Notting Hill and Monday night at New York City’s Allen Room at Lincoln Center overlooking Central Park. Along with the new songs, Jack also played some classics. At the New York show when Jack played "Home," he explained to the crowd, "I've realized home is anywhere your family is. Tonight, this is our home." Thanks to all who came out to the shows and with the announcement of Jack’s North American and European Fall tour, we hope to see more of you this fall.

"Every block of the city is a quintessential definition of the highly diversified New York culture. Each area is divided as a small village of its own unique flavors and history. The variety.that the city provides is almost infinite. Starting from Tribeca, Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, Lower East Side, Meat Packing district, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Gramecy Park, Theater, Lincoln Center, Upper East Side, Harlem, The Bronx, Brooklyn to Queens; New York City will never fail to surprise us with its treasure. The answer is in the pride New Yorkers take in saying "ONLY IN New YorK." In this historical documentary about New York Fashion Week, power players in the industry discuss the evolution of New York Fashion Week from the hustle and bustle to  Studio 54 for Betsey Johnson to its current location at Lincoln Center.   In one particularly eye-opening scene, you hear Fern Mallis discuss Michael Kors show from the early nineties and the falling plaster that hit Journalist Suzy Menkes and her signature pompadour which was like imagining  a scene straight out of Robert Altman's 'Pret-a-Porter.' Though it was a real life spectacle, Menkes took the incident to the press, writing, "New York had to organize itself in order to really be a fashion capital," initiating the development of "7th on Sixth", the year of the tents in 1993.   Though the documentary is driven predominantly by the business aspect of the industry, for the fashion obsessed who longs for Lanvin, not diamonds, you're bound to find some inspiring moments. Take, for example, Zac Posen discussing his introduction to fash ...

Thoughts, tonight, that I might someday take back: Is New York great? What makes a great city? -- You can live on Park Avenue, see shows at Lincoln Center, shop at Tiffany’s, and climb the Empire State Building. But these opportunities do not make New York a great city. New York is, for its most fortunate, a *luxurious* city. It is certainly a *diverse* and *productive* city. -- The measure of a city is not its luxury, nor its diversity, nor its economic or cultural production. -- What makes a great city? How well its *least fortunate* citizens live.

In 1875, the 1,979 seat Paris Opera house (see below) opened - in 1883, the far larger (3,625 seat) Metropolitan Opera House opened in New York. Each replaced previous opera houses. Each was spectacularly beautiful. In 1966, the Metropolitan Opera Guild decided to move to new quarters (the new Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, seating 3,800). In 1989, Paris's opera company decided to move to the new and larger Opera Garnier (2,723 seats). In New York, the company demolished its building. In Paris, L'Opera simply devoted itself to ballet. It's so very hard to imagine Paris permitting L'Opera to simply be demolished!
NYC – Day 6 Starting to feel a smidge like we don’t want leave! The boys are starting to speculate and critique on what living in NYC would be like. We are starting to wake up a bit earlier each day. Headed out on foot this morning in search of what has turned out to be the elusive New York bagel bakery. Thought they would be on every corner of every street; but alas, around Times Square, they were simply not to be found, at least not on the streets we were walking. My assumption so far has been that they were all eaten by Starbucks! Finally, after having all three of us standing like lost tourists in the middle of the sidewalk, all looking at Yelp or Yahoo or Around Me on our iPhones, we found one reasonably in line with our next destination – so to Pick-a-Bagel we went! Pretty good and checked that off of our list (thanks for pushing for it Theresa!) Next we walked to Lincoln Center to get our tickets for the night’s play, and walked around the grounds a bit to soak it all in! What a wonderful s ...

Our friend, Rio Clemente, The Bishop of Jazz, is hosting a Holiday Concert for the Staten Island Coast Guard families whose houses were also destroyed or damaged due to Hurricane Sandy. While the men and woman of the Coast Guard were out helping the citizens of New Jersey and New York evacuate and be safe during the storm, their own homes at Sector New York in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island were getting pummeled by Hurricane Sandy. Rio Clemente heard about the plight of the Coast Guard in Staten Island and decided to have a holiday concert, "The ImpresaRIO Series Holiday Concert" to benefit these families. Rio is a master pianist who mixes a strong classical background with a rich knowledge of jazz history, then adds an amazing sense of creativity and interpretation. He has a knack for captivating audiences like nobody else. He has played at many venues including The Players Club, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC but his most memorable venue was in 2011 at the White House. "The ImpresaRIO Series ...

Makarova was born in Leningrad in former Soviet Russia. At the age of 12, she auditioned for the Leningrad Choreographic School (formerly the Imperial Ballet School), and was accepted although most students join the school at the age of 10. She was a permanent member of the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad from 1956 to 1970, achieving prima ballerina status during the 1960s. Soon after Makarova defected to the West in 1970, she began performing with the American Ballet Theatre in New York and the Royal Ballet in London. At first she was eager to expand her choreography by dancing ballets by modern choreographers. She remained most identified with classical roles such as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and Giselle; she was featured in the 1976 live American Ballet Theatre production of Swan Lake, simulcast from Lincoln Center on both PBS and NPR. Makarova continued to excel in many different roles.[1] most notably, her title role in Giselle. She was slim and slight, and combined a delicacy and lyricism with impeccable ...

Jackie and I just got home from my first ever trip to New York City! We really enjoyed the visit. I went for a Feldenkrais Method workshop on Pelvic Health and Awareness, which was a fantastic class. Everybody can use this information. Jackie visited with her childhood friend that lives in NJ. We went to dinner with my nephew and his wife, Brian & Sharon, at a really nice restaurant called The Robert. It sits at the top of the Museum of Arts and Design. The view from there looks out onto Columbus Circle, Central Park, and Lincoln Center. We went to see the Broadway play Wicked, which was fantastic. One of the best things was that we found a nice little apartment, through airbnb.com, that was just seven blocks from my class. So, I got to walk to and from class each day and experience the feel of really living in New York. To tell the truth, before I went I didn't have a very high opinion of The City; but, I really liked it. I don't think I would want to live there, but, I sure do enjoy visiting. I plan to ...
So What [Live at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York, February 12, 1964] by Miles Davis
New York audience members rave about the performance after seeing Shen Yun at Lincoln Center. See what the city's leaders have to say.
I love New York! Two Interlochen reunions in the past few weeks - with Katie Barrett on the plaza at Lincoln Center and with Karina Krepp this morning in Riverside Park. Happy.
Another "New York moment": walking up West End Ave near 99th, I see a woman with a violin case hailing a cab. She looks familiar..."Cynthia?" Why, yes, it's Cynthia Roberts whom I haven't seen in years, on her way to teach at Julliard. A few hours later, I'm meeting Ted and Lesley Friedman Rosenthal at the film cafe in Lincoln Center and whom do I see? Cynthia again! I half-expect Woody Allen to step out of the sidelines and yell "Cut!"
Playing a show in New York, NY at 12:00 PM today at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
Well I am back to my normal routine this Friday morning. At about 8:00pm Wednesday night I drove away from the Stratford Arms located in the Upper West Side of Manhatten on 70th street - yes New York City - where I left Jennifer and a piece of my heart. This will be truly an adjustment to have my child out of an easy reach of my arms. I am guessing that this is the true feeling of my oldest reaching adulthood and the start of her adult life on her own. New York City is certainly a shock to that realization. As far as New York City living - the Upper West Side is a really good neighborhood - she is about three blocks from the Lincoln Center so a lot of well lit streets - lots of people and lots of police. She's convenient to everything she needs but lives on a nice street with trees even... We thank God that Jennifer has her good friend Greg Bourke living in New York also who has already shown her the ropes for using the subway. Those two will be great friends and a great support to each other and ...

More than 100 public television stations reaching two-thirds of the nation’s viewers turned over their air on Saturday to an unusual seven-hour telethon broadcast live from WNET-TV’s Lincoln Center studio in New York. A parade of media stars, including NBC’s Brian Williams, CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo, CBS’s Rebecca Jarvis and public media’s Maria Hinojosa and Ray Suarez, exhorted viewers to “call the number on your screen,” but they were not seeking membership pledges. Instead, they asked viewers to sign up to be “American Graduate Day Champions,” and connect with community organizations working on the nation’s High School dropout crisis.
Nada Loka Raga Sagara, Royal Albert Hall, London - 22nd September 2012 Sri Swamiji's world must be mostly musical and melodious - this is what the audience of 2500 felt in the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, 22nd September 2012. Sri Swamiji was at His musical supremacy during the two hour long musical extravaganza that brought a much more special meaning to the exalted status Royal Albert Hall holds among the premier music venues in the world. What started as an instruction on a Godavari river boat ride on 21st December 2006 during SDHS Volunteer camp at Bhadrachalam took its final shape during the concert. Sri Swamiji had expressed Sankalpam to perform "Music for Meditation and Healing " at Regidi village in Andhra Pradesh (24 Jan 2008), Lincoln Center in New York (19 July 2008) , Esplanade auditorium in Singapore (24 Jan 2009) & Royal Albert Hall in London (today, 22nd September 2012). As was Datta Leela to unfold, the concerts happened in the same series Pujya Sri Swamiji wished. London is having a sup ...

~Sept 23, 1962 - New York's Philharmonic Hall opened. The 1st unit of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Yesterday evening I had one of those uniquely New York experiences. It started with a plan to meet colleagues and clients for a cocktail before seeing the New York Philharmonic @ Lincoln Center. We spotted Martha Stewart Living (she's better looking than the not-so-living one) and then joined in on a pre-concert talk that was led by a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music who both played parts of the evenings score and explained the context for the selection of the music we were about to experience. The concert was fantastic and, the best part, I was able to share a cab afterward with one of my favorite book-clubbers, colleagues and personal friends. A great night.
Always regretted missing the Met when we were in New York. Could have spent the whole time at MOMA for that matter, but did get in Lincoln Center and a few things on Broadway. But thanks to PBS Boston I've got the whole Ring cycle on Pvr, plus Tosca and La Traviata. Going to be a great winter, D.
On Sunday morning it was officially announced, at the first "American Idol" Season 12 callback auditions taping at New York's Lincoln Center, that hip-hop diva Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban have finally signed on to be the new "American Idol" judges. They'll be joining the panel alongside longtime judge Randy Jackson (who is still on board to give the show continuity, despite earlier reports that he was being demoted) and Randy's star managerial client, Mariah Carey. The odd foursome made their first public appearance at Lincoln Center this Sunday morning. Although Nicki once claimed she didn't want to be a full-time TV talent show judge, back when it was rumored that she'd been approached by Simon Cowell to join "The X Factor," the split-personality star has apparently since changed at least one of her minds. This is probably due to the reported $10 million (plus additional allowances for hair and makeup) that Fox will be paying her. Or maybe when she once joked about filling Jennifer Lopez ...
Sept. 16, 1966 - The Metropolitan Opera opened its new opera house at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
'Real Housewives of New York's Ramona Singer: She's got the blues Ramona Singer knows a thing or two about being camera-ready. As one of the original cast members of "The Real Housewives of New York," Singer is used to being in the public eye. That means being Paparazzi-prepared. Singer isn't trying to chance being included on anyone's worst dressed list. So she makes sure she keeps on top of trends at events. That means going to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. We caught up with the television personality at the Walter Baker show at Lincoln Center. Singer was wearing one of Baker's designs - a form-fitting blue dress. Her look was on trend and she looked ready for her close-up. Unlike other "Housewives," Singer actually has legitimate couture cred because of her fashion background. She attended the famed Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a buyer for Macy's before working for French Connection and Calvin Klein. She currently has a jewelry line, True Faith Jewelry, which is sold through the Home Sho ...
Fior Mendez, 22, moved to New York just two months ago from the Dominican Republic and walked the runway on Friday night at Lincoln Center for designer Nzinga Knight.
Just back from a great weekend in New York. Saw "War Horse" at Lincoln Center Theater. Visited a great friend in New Jersey, and had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Hudson River and NYC skyline. Beautiful site as the setting sun made the buildings sparkle like gold, and the lights twinkle as nighttime descended. Fireworks from the Intrepid completed the night as we crossed back into NYC on the Ferry. What an amazing city!

President Obama fundraises with help from NBA stars Posted Aug 23, 2012 9:42 PM New York (AP) -- President Barack Obama sees the presidential contest as a clutch moment in his favorite sporting moment -- the fourth quarter of a taut basketball game. Fundraising with the help of current and former National Basketball Association stars, Obama told a small group of donors gathered Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center that the current campaign is like the final minutes of a basketball contest with his team up by a few points. "But the other side is coming strong," Obama said. "And they play a little dirty. We've got a few folks on our team in foul trouble. We have a couple of injuries. And I believe they have one last run in them." Obama raised $3 million with the help of the players, who included former Chicago Bulls player Michael Jordan and former Knicks Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley. NBA Commissioner David Stern also was there. Invoking Jordan's competitive nature, Obama concluded: "If yo ...

Valerie Simpson says Friday night's tribute at Lincoln Center in New York should be "a great show and a great remembrance of my husband." With August 22nd marking the first anniversary of Nick Ashford's death from throat cancer, a giant, free outdoor show will feature performers who were close to the New York writing-producing duo, such as Jermaine Paul. The winner of this spring's competition on The Voice often sang at Ashford and Simpson's Manhattan club The Sugar Bar. Valerie tells us, "He was a blues singer who used our stage to hone his talent. We knew he had the 'It' factor, so we're glad to see it." Having just finished an afternoon rehearsal, she says she's "psyched. You don't feel anything until you actually hear the music. It feels like it's going to be fun. All we have to do is pray the weather holds up." Simpson adds the show's timing is perfect: "You're not allowed to do a pity party too long. I don't feel like you should. I had 36 years of a great marriage and a great partnership. I just ha ...
Met a nice guy and his cute/cool girl friend in 5 Points last nite. Both of them just friended me on FB. She's accomplished classical pianist and here is his impressive bio. His FB name is pseudo. "While a student at South Carolina State University, he joined the band of Marcus Roberts. Following his 1992 graduation, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University; as a graduate student, he became a regular with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra w/Wynton Marsalis, an affiliation that continued after receiving his master’s degree (1994) and upon returning to his hometown of Columbia. There, he operated the Wooden Flute Performance Studio (1995-1996). From 1997 to 2005 he lived in Harlem and participated in the New York jazz scene, including as lead trombonist and arranger with the Lincoln Center group. He left New York in 2005 to begin his academic career as a professor in the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Texas, Austin. Saw a Magnificent show tonight at Koch Theatre, Lincoln Center: The Paris Opera Ballet performing Orpheus and Eurydice, glorious music by Gluck with choreography by the late GREAT PINA BAUSCH. In german, no subtitles, did not need them. Peerless singing, beautiful dancing, very avant staging. A great evening, even from the nosebleed section called the 4th Ring. Two more shows, July 21 and 22. And there were tons and tons of Applause for a great two and half hour show from a New York audience. (How often does that happen!)

CSI: New York is a decent show as long as you don't think it has anything at all to do with New York! Just a Hollywood nightmare of NYC. The first episode had Lincoln Center on Central Park, whereas it's actually 4 blocks away, and it's just gotten more ridiculous with each episode. But I like the show anyway, so I guess they wouldn't care. But if you think this shows New York, think again! Fair warning.

Drinda and I returned late last week from a wonderful trip to Manhattan to see youngest daughter Monica and her husband Josh. We went to shoot in Brooklyn to see Monica, her business partner Chris and their incredible company Wee Beastie at work on a spot for The Learning Channel (TLC). Friday Josh got us into a performance for the Live! with Kelly show (Josh is the Lighting Director for WABC-TV New York). The fact that fellow Trojans Reggie Bush (co-host) and Tom Selleck (guest) were there made it a great “USC in NY” morning. Saturday night Monica & Josh hosted us and Josh’s parents Jon and Marcia Hinden for a fabulous dinner Rosa Mexicana at Lincoln Center followed by cigars, drinks and live jazz at the Carnegie Club. We had a great day Monday visiting The Cloisters, a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. This is a must see in our book. We enjoyed a fabulous evening with Monica and Josh at Dizzy’s Club at the Lincoln Center for d ...

A thrilling night at the Literacy Partners Gala that included a reading from "Elizabeth the Queen." The evening at Jazz at Lincoln Center raised more than $1 million for this highly effective program to teach reading that began nearly 40 years ago. Liz Smith, the Queen of New York and the program's guiding force, was a wonderful MC and received her own well-deserved "Lizzie" award for her years of dedicated service.
Columnist James Ahearn of New Jersey's Bergen Record has a great column today on, of all things, the stagehands at New York City's top Performing Arts venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. These are not highly skilled or technical jobs but take a gander at how much they are paid:
Ah, the Big Apple, one of our newest destinations for Portico members to travel to. Rising 52 stories over The Upper West Side, Lincoln Center and Central Park, The Trump Hotel owns New York. You will, too, looking down on Manhattan from your 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows.
Going to hear jazz in New York is one of those can’t-miss city experiences, whether it’s at a tiny club in the West Village like Smalls or a much grander space like Jazz at Lincoln Center further uptown.
Great mother's day celebration yesterday. Veronica and I met Sjoma in New York, took a long city walk on the West side, past Lincoln Center, Zabars deli, Strawberry fields, the Bethesda Terrace, the Writer's Walk, and down to Centrral Park South and Columbus Circle. Then to Chinatown for mother's day dinner.

Marco Zunino will perform "Chicago" again, this time in Lima beginning on June 16.
running around more than 15 countries within the sort-of-ever-closer European Union the past three years, i noticed one common reaction from almost everyone when i say i'm from New York: "Oh My God!", "Amazing", "So cool", "my dream's to go there!", "beautiful city","i love New York!" and on and on. But upon reflection, and at the risk of pissing off New Yorkers as well as seemingly everyone on earth - I must say that while Manhattan is pretty exciting and dynamic - the truth is that with the exception of a few august sections (Washington Sq., Union Sq., the Hudson River, Central Park, Lincoln Center, etc...) it's essentially a long concrete grid weighed down by big, nondescript, gray, sun-and-sky blocking buildings ... creatively lined up like dominoes in edifying straight lines from north to south and east to west. In other words - New York is plain mofo ugly once you get past the hype. And in summer - it's just not fit for most life forms.
Cts over for Durham Region but now on to New York...great 2 shows everyone...amazing how it all just comes together! Now a week off and back to rehearsing so we can also awe them all at Lincoln Center!!! Who'd a thunk I would be singing at the Lincoln Center...yeah!
