JOKE TIME* An elderly man in Oklahoma calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day son, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are getting a divorce; 45 years of marriage... and that much misery is enough!" "Dad, what are you talking about?" the son yells. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old dad explained. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Hong Kong and tell her!". Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll Take Care of this." She calls her elderly father immediately, and screams at him, "You are not getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, you hear me?" she yelled as she hung up the phone. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay", he says, "it's all set. They're both coming for Christmas and paying ...

Entrevista com o editor da revista Jacobin Magazine. New Left Review 90, November-December 2014 NEW MASSES, NEW MEDIA The last years have seen the eruption of one unexpected urban uprising after another—in New York, Athens, Madrid, Cairo, Kiev, Sao Paulo, Istanbul, Hong Kong. The occasions, forms and compositions of these have each been particular, though patterns of long-distance inspiration and emulation are also clear. These popular insurgencies have been the most striking phenomenon within a broader gamut of different kinds of resistance to the established order of capital, the ‘new masses’ whose potential or actual components were surveyed by Göran Therborn in NLR 85; articles on the explosions in Brazil and Turkey have followed. Alongside the emergence of new masses has come, in the same period, the arrival of new media, challenging the system of inequality in its own ways. With this issue we begin a series of interviews and reports on these too. Their appearance has also been local in origin ...

Jack Vettriano Born in Fife, Scotland in 1951, Jack Vettriano left school at sixteen to become a mining engineer. For his twenty-first birthday, a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints and, from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. In 1989, he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition; both were accepted and sold on the first day. The following year, an equally enthusiastic reaction greeted the three paintings, which he entered for the prestigious Summer Exhibition at London’s Royal Academy and his new life as an artist began from that point on. Over the last twenty years, interest in Vettriano’s work has grown consistently. There have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York. 2004 was an exceptional year in Vettriano’s career; his best known painting, The Singing Butler was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000; he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject ...

Quite a day yesterday. A lovely gig by the up and coming Abigail Angus at WM Jazz Club in the afternoon. I like the fact that she and her band play so many of her own songs. A nearly full WM Jazz for China Crisis. Tommy Dean went on as support with a guitar borrowed from China Crisis, and maintained his near 100% record of breaking a guitar string. China Crisis were excellent, a couple of impressive new tracks and all their 1980's new wave hits. The 1980's was a bit of a golden decade for me. Graduation from the LSE, my beloved MGB roadster, the only previous car of mine whose number plate I can remember. Marriage, a couple of years in the Far East, cross border M&A, lecturing in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Spain, buying our first house for £48,000, youngest Finance Director of a listed company, the births of Christopher and Josh. Would I turn back the clock if I could? Wishful Thinking.

So many posts / articles here and in the media about how awful London is. How horrible England is. How terrible it has all become and how our city has become overrun by rude / nasty / money grabbing / arrogant wankers / *** / hipsters etc etc etc. The common thread. It's always someone else. We are surrounded by an seemingly alien population making our lives intolerable. Maybe it's time we took a closer look at our role in this relationship. People aren't pre-programmed to be *** London is a really difficult city to live in and if all you see is the negative maybe it's your contribution which is at fault. It's expensive. Try New York, Paris, Hong Kong..where do you fancy..apparently Berlin's getting pricey..ooh er! That rude shop assistant, I have a feeling you started it and that 'hipster' that chose to ignore you. Maybe if you stop judging them they'll be nice to you. We all have bad days. Stop moaning and start contributing.

Organisers have been left frustrated after star attraction Eugenie Bouchard pulled out of the WTA Hong Kong Tennis Open. The absence of the Canadian, along with Chinese Shuai Peng, has overshadowed the build-up to the first WTA event in Hong Kong since 1993, which gets under way on Monday. Bouchard - who was due to be the the top seed for the WTA International event - lost to Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round at the US Open in a match that saw her require treatment due to the sweltering New York heat. But Bouchard left it late to inform the Hong Kong Tennis Association of her withdrawal from the upcoming tournament, in a move that has angered the organisation's president, Herbert Chow Siu-lung. "We are very disappointed that Bouchard is not honouring her commitment even though she lost in the fourth round [of the US Open] and it took her until now to officially inform us that she is not coming," he told the South China Morning Post. "If Bouchard was injured we could understand and would wish her well. ...

I have been watching a lot of movies recently. Reruns of the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. Last week I watched Godzilla. Yesterday, my family and I watched X-Men. We also saw the trailers for the upcoming sequels of the Transformer and Planet of the Apes movies. . . My two conclusions : 1 All the monsters, aliens, robots, future beings, gigantic spaceships, etc DO NOT attack Malaysia. They land and attack New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, etc (they were even in South Africa – remember District 9?) but they don’t come to Malaysia. We are safe. Yey… Malaysia kita aman. 2 All the sophisticated / advanced humans /beings speak English. The Jedis, Yoda, the Elves, Gandalph the Grey, the Autobots, all the X-men, Superman, Batman, Ironman, Spiderman, The Hulk – all of them speak English. So people, please brush up your English if you want to do well in the future.

As some of you may have been following the student protests in Taiwan over the last two weeks, you may have noticed this slogan: “Taiwan tomorrow is Hong Kong today.” I'm going to this panel discussion about Hong Kong given by Anson Chan and Martin Lee, two of the most important pro-democratic leaders in the former British colony. The event today (6:30pm-8pm, Monday) at Asia Society (725 Park Ave.) in New York is open to the public. I met up with Chan and Lee yesterday. It’s very moving to see the pair, both aged 75, are still working tirelessly. They’re in the U.S. meeting members of Congress, government leaders and the media, asking them to pay attention to Hong Kong. We need to listen to these two courageous leaders. Hong Kong today could be Taiwan tomorrow, and could be the world tomorrow... When Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, China’s leaders vowed the former colony would be governed according to Deng Xiaoping’s “one country, two systems” formula, territoria ...

Hundreds of FBI, IRS and local police officers also raided offices in the San Francisco Bay Area and arrested several people, including Raymond "Shrimp Boy" Chow, former head of a Hong Kong-based crime gang. Both Yee, a candidate for California secretary of state, and Chow were scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon.
An outspoken Hedge Fund manager out of Hong Kong stunned King World News when he said that the entire Ukrainian gold hoard may have just secretly been flown from Ukraine to the United States. William Kaye, who 25 years ago worked for Goldman Sachs in mergers and acquisitions, also spoke about the incredible implications of this astonishing development. Below is what Kaye had to say in this powerful interview. Kaye: “There are now reports coming from Ukraine that all of the Ukrainian gold has been airlifted, at 2 AM Ukrainian time, out of the main airport, Boryspil Airport, in Kiev, and is being flown to New York — the presumable destination being the New York Fed…. “Now that’s 33 tons of gold which is worth somewhere between $1.5 billion – $2 billion. That would amount to a very nice down payment to the $5 billion that Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland boasted that the United States has already spent in their efforts to destabilize Ukraine, and put in place their own unelected gover ...

A virtual investing competition in which the top performers win sponsorship to participate in the 2014 Summer Internship Program in London, New York, Los Angeles or Hong Kong.
Li Junjie, 33, worked in JPMorgan’s Hong Kong headquarters. He jumped from the building’s roof last week as police tried to talk him down. His friends told police he had been experiencing work-related stress. “The pressure of front-line sales and trading jobs has spread through to formerly calm back offices, where trades are checked to ensure compliance with regulations. Adding to those pressures, banks see their back offices as a cost, rather than as revenue generating. The pressure intensified after New York state’s top financial regulator, Benjamin Lawsky, demanded documents from over a dozen banks in a probe of trading practices in the US$5.3 trillion a day foreign exchange market. Manipulation of the benchmark Libor interbank lending rate has led to dozens of traders being fired and penalties topping US$6 billion,” reports South China Morning Post. But Junjiee had recently bought a HK$5.5 million apartment and planned a trip to Toronto where he had once held a job at Royal Bank of Canada Ga ...

“I’m normally a die-hard ‘don’t-believe-the-hype’ kind of person, but when it comes to Hong Kong touting itself as one of the world’s smoothest & slickest cities, even I’ve got to admit it’s true,” writes Sarah Williams. Everything in this city just works. Trust me. From the minute you touch down, everything’s a breeze. Grab your luggage and a free cart and roll right onto the Airport Express – the megacity’s super-comfy, Wi-Fi-enabled train that zips you straight into the Central district in just 23-minutes and costs only £7.50. Contrast this to arriving in New York or London. New York’s JFK: Don’t have any greenbacks in your pocket? Sorry, no $5 luggage cart for you. Make your way through immigration and enjoy that one-hour-plus wait for a taxi to NYC. Oh yeah, and that flat fee of $52 into Midtown? Forget it. Add the New York State Tax Surcharge (OK, that’s just 50¢) plus tolls and tip and you’re pushing $70. Take the Air Train you say? Yeah, good luck figuring that ou ...

Have I posted this story, yet? There's so many of them, I get confused, sometimes. From Al Jazeera: Banks under investigation for alleged currency exchange rate-fixing February 5, 2014 4:13PM ET Barclays, Goldman Sachs among institutions being investigated for allegedly manipulating foreign exchange markets New York state's financial regulator has opened an investigation into alleged manipulation of foreign exchange markets and is demanding documents from more than a dozen banks, a source familiar with the investigation told Al Jazeera. Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group, Goldman Sachs and a number of other large banks that the Department of Financial Services regulates will be investigated in the probe, the source said. Authorities in the U.S., Britain, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore have opened probes into whether the large banks manipulated foreign exchange rates used to set the value of trillions of dollars of investments. Investigators suspect that traders from different banks may have used chat ro ...

Book (and the last book) for today: 1942: The Year That Tries Men’s Souls by Winston Groom, New York, Atlantic Monthly Press, 2005, 459 pages To the generation of Americans who lived through it, the Second World War was the defining event of the twentieth century, and the defining events of that war were played out in the year 1942. It was a time when an unexpected attack on American territory pulled an unprepared country into a terrifying new brand of warfare with a ruthless enemy. Soon after Japan’s Attack On Pearl Harbor, German U-boats were sinking hundreds of U.S. merchant ships, some right off the American coast. In the Pacific, Japan’s army and navy far outmatched those of the United States and was threatening the American mainland from Alaska to the Panama Canal. The beginning of 1942 was a relentless cataract of defeats. The Japanese annihilated MacArthur’s 130,000-man army in the Philippines and set into motion the infamous “Death March” on Bataan. Hong Kong fell, followed by M ...

Investors' faith in the growth of Chinese consumer spending should help the US$5 billion IPO planned for next year by Chinese pork processor Shuanghui International Holdings, which in May completed a US$4.7 billion purchase of U.S. pork producer Smithfield Foods—the biggest-ever acquisition by a Chinese company of a U.S. company. Other offerings planned for 2014 include an IPO by Guangfa Bank and a listing of the Hong Kong electricity assets of tycoon Li Ka-shing's Power Assets Holdings. Both deals are expected to raise around US$5 billion. Some blockbuster deals are also possible, including a widely anticipated offering by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., whose IPO could raise more than US$10 billion, according to bankers. It is uncertain whether Alibaba will list in Hong Kong or New York. SouthEast Asia, meanwhile, isn't likely to see a boom in offerings next year. A pending presidential election in Indonesia will likely delay any big deals there until at least the second half of t ...
A recent article in the Financial Times placed "classic cars" as the second-best-performing investment over the past decade (395% growth); only outperformed by gold (434%), albeit taking into account prime real estate in Hong Kong (221%), Sao Paolo (211%), Paris (117%), London (103%), and New York (72%). Yet another massive nail in the dollar’s coffin Photo Credit: Images_of_Money (Creative Commons) On the other side of the world today, a couple of gentlemen that few people have ever heard of signed an agreement that has massive consequences for the global financial system. It was a Memorandum of Understanding signed by representatives of the Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Exchange. Their aim– to combine their forces in rolling out more financial products denominated in Chinese renminbi. This is huge. Hong Kong and Singapore are THE two dominant financial centers in Asia. For years they’ve been locked in competition with one another, much like New York and London. So their public partnership is a very big deal… indicative of the clear objective they have in front of them. Bottom line– finance executives in Asia see the writing on the wall. They can see that the dollar is in a period of terminal decline, and it’s clear that the Chinese renminbi is going to take tremendous Market Share away fr ...
China releases sweeping market reform blueprint what is being promoted as the most sweeping pro-market reform drive in three decades, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has unveiled the main resolution and President Xi Jinping’s explanatory remarks to the third plenum of the 18th Central Committee that concluded last week. The global financial markets regarded the initial communiqué released on November 15 as disappointing due to the lack of any concrete policy. Stock markets in Mainland China and Hong Kong tumbled the next morning. “Then, on the weekend, well ahead of the usual schedule for such announcements”, the New York-based Bloomberg.com noted, “the party released a longer follow-up statement worth getting excited about,” adding that, “It’s radical stuff”. The market excitement was summed up by American billionaire investor, Jim Rogers, cofounder of the Quantum Fund with Gorge Soros. He announced he was considering migrating to China with his dollars, as “the most important econo ...
Chinese property buyers and investors have eclipsed those from Singapore as the world's foremost buyers of prime new-build homes globally. During Q3 2013, Chinese investors were the most influential buyer nationality in the world's prime new-build sector, with a preference for buying properties in Hong Kong, New York and London. Bloomberg News Is Said to Curb Articles That Might Anger China The decision came in an early evening call to four journalists huddled in a Hong Kong conference room. On the line 12 time zones away in New York was their boss, Matthew Winkler, the longtime editor in chief of Bloomberg News. And they were frustrated by what he was telling them. The investigative report they had been working on for the better part of a year, which detailed the hidden financial ties between one of the wealthiest men in China and the families of top Chinese leaders, would not be published. In the call late last month, Mr. Winkler defended his decision, comparing it to the self-censorship by foreign news bureaus trying to preserve their ability to report inside Nazi-era Germany, according to Bloomberg employees familiar with the discussion. “He said, ‘If we run the story, we’ll be kicked out of China,’ ” one of the employees said. Less than a week later, a second article, about the children of senior Chinese officials ...
‘If you build it, they will come’ - Russia's financial field of dreams: The Russian proverb that ‘all roads lead to Moscow’ can be validated by simply looking around and observing the wealth that has accumulated in the capital city. Once more Russian money is reinvested in Russia, foreign investment will follow. A country rich in oil, energy, and precious metals, Russia’s wealth is highly concentrated in the capital city. In 2011, 22 percent of GDP came from Moscow, and 27 percent from the Moscow region, according to RosStat, the official government statistic bureau. According to the World Bank, Russia’s GDP is $1.86 trillion. Much attention is paid to Moscow’s billionaires as financial circles watch with intrigue as football clubs, Greek islands, and New York penthouses are bought up by Russia’s new class of wealth. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, state capital found its ways into the hands of a very few powerful oligarchs, and ‘new money’ consolidated in Moscow. Some of that ...
NEW YORK (AP) — Warren Buffett likens it to a nuclear attack. Economists warn that government spending on programs like Social Security would plunge. The Treasury says the economy would slide into a recession worse than the last. Yet you wouldn't know that a U.S. debt default could amount to a nightmare from the way many companies and investors are preparing for it: They aren't. The assumption seems to be that in the end, Washington will find a way to avert a default. "Doomsday is nigh, and everyone shrugs," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at CovergEx Group, an investment brokerage in New York. Brian Doe, a wealth adviser at Gratus Capital Management in Atlanta, has 35 clients who've entrusted him with $50 million for safekeeping. He isn't losing sleep over a potential default. Neither are his clients, apparently. Not one has called him about the issue, he said. "I've not done anything," he said. He puts the odds of default very low. "People in Washington are stupid but not that stupid." Ma ...
New York Times's Jill Abramson: 'The First Amendment is first for a reason' For a newspaper that has yet to put a great deal of marketing muscle behind its international presence, the New York Times isn't doing so badly. A third of its 59 million unique monthly users live outside the US, making it one of the most widely read news sites in the world – even before it really tries. On Tuesday that effort to advance the paper's global reach begins in earnest with the launch of the International New York Times, an integrated digital and print venture designed to push the Times's revered journalism to a worldwide audience. Edited in Paris, Hong Kong and New York, it will build upon the foundations of the International Herald Tribune, the 126-year-old title that will cease to exist, ten years after the NYT bought out its partner for the previous 35 years, the Washington Post. For Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times, the rebranding is the culmination of a long-held ambition to create what she ...

"50 Years That's how long Malawi has been independent. Sovereign. Republic. To this hour Malawians have: 1. A Presidency which is haphazard. No knowledge of Economics, Development. Our Presidency is only good at looting and abuse of public resources. MK33bn for travelling with her relatives who have filled every space in State House and Civil Service 2. A Presidency which is utterly shameless to tell lies. Early this year, Madam President went to South Korea and returned with good news for the unemployed youth. She apparently brokered Employment Contract with South Korean Government to employ Malawian youths. It was a shameless, faceless LIE. She laid a Foundation Stone on Housing Project she negotiated with Chinese Company..., only to discover that it was a raw deal. House are as expensive as somewhere in Hong Kong, Paris or New York. She is clueless, absolutely useless. I'm saying..., while abject poverty is here with us, a credible government would be the least consolation. A beacon of hope that says s ...

JIMMY BOND OR SINGLE O SEVEN Often the best stories can not be told or at least not for a long time. As a young Army Officer, I needed either Combat Arms or Special Forces assignments to get promotions. Some of my assignments were very simple. One was liaison officer from the school where I taught computer programs to The U. S. Military Academy at West Point. To insure that I was current on the latest in Computer Science, I was sent to several graduate level courses. Often during these trips, I was given additional duties. JIMMY BOND OR SINGLE O SEVEN A SHORT STORY BY George L. King (about 1986) Jimmy was born in Hong Kong. Jimmy was not his given name, but became his legal name when he emigrated to the US. His parents were tailors and on Hong Kong standards were considered middle class. His Uncle had emigrated to New York and owned and operated a small retail shop in Chinatown. Jimmy worked in the shop as a runner and errand boy and stocked up until his English was Americanized, then he worked as a sale ...
Got a call at 4:30 AM from a national news producer asking us to weigh in this morning regarding the breaking news report that Edward Snowden has left Hong Kong for Moscow. Don't think we could get up to the studio." Producer was so impressed with our last interview regarding Benghazi and the U.S. and Russia and our book, Codename Wildcard, that they want us back for this latest breaking news about intelligence theft.

Even though it's just a 2-minute weather forecast?    As the weather forecast ends, a few commercials came running in, some featuring the country of Spain, Hong Kong, Thailand, India and Malaysia.   Where's the Philippines?   Is our country not beautiful enough? Does it not reach the economical standards needed to be advertised in TV?  Is Boracay not good enough? How about Cebu? Or even Makati, also known as the financial and economical capital of t ...

LOL. Poor Rupert can't keep his trophy wife. Time for jail, Rupert! "MURDOCH DIVORCE FILING: Rupert Murdoch has moved to divorce his wife of 14 years, Wendi Deng Murdoch, according to a filing with New York State Supreme Court. A spokeswoman for News Corporation, which owns the New York Post, confirmed that Rupert Murdoch had filed the papers yesterday morning, and his court papers said the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.” They have two daughters, Grace, 11, and Chloe , 9, and live in New York. Murdoch, 82, met Deng, 44, when she was an executive at his company’s Star TV division in Hong Kong. They wed in 1999 aboard the media mogul’s 155-foot yacht in New York Harbor. We understand a prenuptial agreement is in place. Ira E. Garr of law firm Garr Silpe is representing Rupert Murdoch in the divorce." -- LBN Alert
June 13 (Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong will deal with any U.S. extradition request for a former National Security Agency contractor who disclosed secret information, based on the city’s legal system, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said. “We can’t comment on individual cases,” Leung said yesterday in a Bloomberg Television interview in New York. “We’ll handle the case according to our law.” As the U.S. Justice Department worked on possible charges, Edward Snowden, who disclosed details of U.S. surveillance programs, vowed to fight extradition from Hong Kong, where he fled before revealing his identity. In an interview published yesterday by the South China Morning Post, he said he hadn’t committed any crime. “I’m neither traitor nor hero,” Snowden said. “I’m an American.” The South China Morning Post said Snowden was interviewed in a secret location after he checked out of a Hong Kong hotel on June 10. Asked about his decision to flee to Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous region of China t ...
Cryptic Overtures and a Clandestine Meeting Gave Birth to a Blockbuster StoryBy CHARLIE SAVAGE and MARK MAZZETTI Published: June 10, 2013 WASHINGTON — The source had instructed his media contacts to come to Hong Kong, visit a particular out-of-the-way corner of a certain hotel, and ask — loudly — for directions to another part of the hotel. If all seemed well, the source would walk past holding a Rubik’s Cube. So three people — Glenn Greenwald, a civil-liberties writer who recently moved his blog to The Guardian; Laura Poitras, a documentary filmmaker who specializes in surveillance; and Ewen MacAskill, a Guardian reporter — flew from New York to Hong Kong about 12 days ago. They followed the directions. A man with a Rubik’s Cube appeared. It was Edward J. Snowden, who looked even younger than his 29 years — an appearance, Mr. Greenwald recalled in an interview from Hong Kong on Monday, that shocked him because he had been expecting, given the classified surveillance programs the man had a ...

This man has a conscience. How refreshing! New Yorkers DECLARE "I STAND WITH Edward Snowden" Hundreds to Rally in Support of NSA Whistleblower at NYC's Union Square Today at 12:00pm [NEW YORK, NY] At 12:00pm EST activists, journalists and concerned New Yorkers will assemble at New York's Union Square for a rally in solidarity with National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower, Edward Snowden. Snowden, a contractor at Booz Allen Hamilton and the source behind The Guardian's near-weeklong stretch of blockbuster scoops highlighting PRISM and similar pervasive surveillance programs under the authority of the NSA, has become a household name overnight. Similarly, this revelation has created a groundswell of concern for Snowden's welfare, who is currently seeking refuge in Hong Kong and may in the near future require political asylum from a criminal investigation opened yesterday, 6/9/2013, by the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The call to "Stand With Edward Snowden", which was issued online shortly after j ...
It is rare for me to remember any artist’s name after seeing their work only once, but El Anatsui is one of those very rare exceptions. I saw his work last at The Armory Show 2010 in New York [1], and I distinctively remember him mainly because of the transmutative properties of the medium which he chooses. Anatsui’s sculptures look like a sort of abstract expressionist tapestry made out of fabric, but are in fact a knit of thousands of discarded aluminium bottle tops threaded together with copper wires. Fluidity of form is a significant quality inherent to his sculptures. The artist insists that his hangings be draped rather than hung flat, and allow museums and galleries to do the draping themselves, thus leaving their actual appearance differ from each show adding a unfixed quality into the sculptural practice. Anatsui was born in Anyako, and trained at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi, in central Ghana. He began teaching at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1 ...
Did you know that radiation levels in Los Angeles are 3.3x higher than they are in Tokyo right now? Doing research on radiation in Japan and found that a majority of Japan has lower levels of background radiation than New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, and many other major cities in the world. The only area that is currently unsafe to travel is within 50km of the Fukushima nuclear plant. I find the statistics both shocking and relieving at the same time. Regardless, we will still take radiation blocking pills when we spend time there this fall. Fun fact for my southern Californians: there is a nuclear reactor in San Onofre (halfway between LA and San Diego) that has been leaking nuclear radiation, causing our air and rain to be 668% higher than the recommended "safe" levels. Enjoy!
About five days ago I arrived in Helsinki, Finland. I touched down with Norwegian Airlines, having boarded at Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom. It took me a sun-swept moment to realise that it had been almost six months since I had left South Africa to pursue further education abroad. I missed home, without knowing where I could find it, or how I wanted to do so. In a video promoting Sally Williams Fine Honey Nougat, a v/o narrator boasts that her goods can be found "as far afield as Helsinki". Some South Africans will recognise the Sally Williams label for her range of confectionery, including the waxy-papered nougat bars. Sally Williams had made it to Sydney, Paris, New York, London, Helsinki...She had made it in these splendorous global cities. And there I was, baking in the sun of one of the cosmopolitan dreamworlds. I have been lucky to have travelled fairly extensively in the last five years especially. My journeys have taken me to São Paulo, Hong Kong, Sharm el-Sheikh, and to various Europe ...
For most people in Iraq, art has not been a priority in recent years - but now it's become a more common way of demonstrating how life is. Work from 11 Iraqi artists has gone on show in Venice, and this gallery shows off some of the images: the subject of art, the BBC's Will Gompertz is hosting an online Q&A at 13:00 GMT (that's 09:00 in New York, 14:00 in London and 21:00 in Hong Kong). He'd like to hear your views on what makes art "good" or "bad". You can find details here and leave questions below.

NYC trip prayers answered: Your prayers led me to a distinguished business man, a New York native, who was married to a beautiful Chinese lady from Hong Kong. They had met six years prior in that same park. He graciously accepted my marriage article. I asked him if he was impacted by 911. He replied, "I walked out of the subway next to the first tower just as it was struck by the first plane. With debris falling on me, I ran for my life and escaped with only minor scrapes and cuts. Several of my friends died in 911." He readily received my article, "Why Do Bad Things happen to Good People?" Both articles included the Billy Graham booklet. Please pray for this nice man who needs Jesus. John 20:31 & 1 John 5:12 for sure!

The marathon of May Contemporary Art fairs has begun with some 800 galleries presenting work by over 5,000 artists in New York (from 8 to 13 May) and Hong Kong (from 23 to 26 May). With the succession of art fairs and major auctions in New York, the month of May is one of the most active, challenging and exhausting for market participants. The very dynamism of pace of the events also has the effect of highlighting the tenuous links that have developed between the primary market (the galleries selling new works) and the secondary market (essentially the auction market). In effect the major prestigious fairs (such as Frieze and Art Basel) attract a public for a number of other events (four off shows during Frieze New York: Cutlog, Pulse, Nada, Pool and the same number during Art Basel Hong Kong: Link Artfair, Bank art fair, Hong Kong contemporary, Asia Contemporary show) that have all scheduled their dates around each other and around the major prestige sales traditionally held in May. The model is the same ...

Marathon runner to retire, aged 101 A 101-year-old Sikh regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner will quit after one final run at next month's Hong Kong race, media reports said. Indian-born British national Fauja Singh admitted age was finally catching up with him and he had decided not to compete after the Hong Kong Marathon on February 24, five weeks before his 102nd birthday on April 1. "But I will keep running for at least four hours daily after that," Singh, who lives in Ilford, England, told the Times of India newspaper during a visit to his home state of Punjab. "Running is my life. I will keep running to inspire the masses." Singh, dubbed the 'Turbaned Tornado', took up running marathons at the ripe old age of 89 and has been credited with competing in eight 42-kilometre (26-mile) races in London, Toronto and New York. He finished his fifth London Marathon last year in a time of seven hours and 49 minutes and was honoured by being invited to carry the Olympic torch. Singh, who says he was b ...

FEBRUARY 25th NEWS: PERSONS IN NEWS: Fauja Singh: The 101-year-old Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner of Indian-origin, retired from competitive events with last race on 24th February. Mr. Singh, nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado,” finished the Hong Kong marathon’s 10-kilometre race in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. But he could not meet his goal of beating his personal record of 5:40. Mr. Singh, who turns 102 on April 1, became the oldest man to run a full marathon at Toronto in 2011. But his record was not recognised by Guinness World Records because he doesn’t have a birth certificate to prove his age, only a passport. Mr. Singh, who was a farmer in Punjab before settling in England, has competed in nine 26-mile marathons in London, Toronto and New York. His best time was in Toronto, where he clocked five hours, 40 minutes and four seconds. A torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics, his one regret is not being able to speak and read English. In 1999, at the age of 89, he decid ...
Another good post from Project Avalon Forum... humanalien - Orly Taitz just got this posted on her web site. I’m sending this to better inform you about what you are up against. Only those who are aware of the Elite’s game plan can understand what is going on. The rest are totally lost and have no explanation for what is going on. Most analysts cannot find any viable macroeconomic explanation of the fact that over the last 5 months gold has been falling against the USD despite world Central Banks flooding the world markets with historically cheap credit, interest rates maintained at their lowest ever, and the primary money Printing Presses (aka the Fed, the BoE, the ECB, the BoJ and the SNB) working around the clock! Misty Knight is also an excellent leader and formidable strategist. Misty Knight's a highly-decorated police officer, those former days on the force jarred to a halt when she lost her right arm to a terrorist's bomb. Tony Stark arranged for her to receive a bionic prosthetic replacement limb in recognition of her bravery. Against taking a desk job for the police, she resigned and became a private investigator, with her friend Colleen Wing. While trying to stop the villain Emil Vachon in Hong Kong, Colleen was almost raped but Misty Knight was able to save her. The two then setup Nightwing Restorations Ltd, nicknamed the Daughter of the Dragon, and often dealt with cases nobody else was willing to resolve. Creation Misty Knight was first created in January of 1975 ...

Thayil has said he wrote the novel, “to create a kind of memorial, to inscribe certain names in stone. As one of the characters [in Narcopolis] says, it is only by repeating the names of the dead that we honour them. I wanted to honour the people I knew in the opium dens, the marginalised, the addicted and deranged, people who are routinely called the lowest of the low; and I wanted to make some rec ...

daphne hellman   Sunday, 07 February, 1999, 12:00am   DAPHNE HELLMAN is 83 and a jazz harpist. Every year she comes to Hong Kong from New York to play at the Fringe Festival. An American critic once wrote of her performance, 'She brings out a sound you didn't know existed on such a prim instrument' and that's not a bad metaphor for the way she has lived her life. By birth and breeding, she should have been a pious, zipped-up individual but she has transcended her background and her years in a quite remarkable fashion. She is, in every way, a class act.   We met in the bar of the Fringe Club. I'd been told that Hellman is of striking appearance and I wasn't misinformed. With her bright, kohl-rimmed eyes, spectacular cheekbones and spiked crest of hair, she looks like a rare avian species. In fact, in New York she lives with a superb starling called Birdie Bird who likes to peck at her head. 'Rivalry,' observed Hellman of this habit. She gave a little laugh, which is how she punctuates publ ...
WE celebrated the coming of the New Year last week with great joy and thanksgiving like most people around the Philippines as viewed on TV programs. The festivities were truly full of hope and merry-making with extravaganzas and fireworks displays held in Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris, London, Berlin, New York, and particularly Metro Manila. The New Year celebrations of Pinoys seemed rowdier than the others despite the gun ban because, after all, it is "more fun in Philippines." For this writer the arrival of the New Year was likewise intense, explosive, hope-full, and prayerful in many ways. Except for the absence of one daughter and granddaughter who were in Atlanta, the whole family was around. One other particular event 15 years ago, FVR recalls, sparked a New Year-like, nationwide celebration after months of anticipation and high expectations. Filipinos were uplifted and filled with pride when they became aware of the Philippines' first cyberspace achievement. Our spirit of unity and patr ...

The New York Times Honors Big Bang & 2NE1 With "Best Concert Of 2012" [2012-12-28] Though they may have been partially eclipsed by the success of their labelmate PSY in 2012, groups Big Bang and 2NE1 still had a stellar year. Big Bang's first global tour was even bigger. I have never experienced "Racism" until I came to Southern United States. I lived in Japan, Hong Kong, Wyoming, Illinois and New York. So I can compare. "Racism" is hidden most of the time but it manifest when a white wants to marry another skin color. Some relatives reacts in a very hypocritical silent way to try to shut the door on colored side. Many marriages destroyed by it. Please get right with the Lord. God created us all beautiful. God sees through every hypocrisy. You cannot judge people with their race, sex or nationality.

Apples' facts: In 1626, the Dutch purchased Manhattan Island from the Lenape Native Americans for 60 guilders (about $1000). The English conquered the city from the Dutch in 1664, and “New Amsterdam” became “New York.” In 1698, New York City only had a population of 4,937 people. New York City served as the capital of the United States in the 1780s before it was moved to Philadelphia and then Washington D.C. George Washington, the first President of the United States, was inaugurated in New York in 1789 at the site of Federal Hall. It wasn’t until 1790 that New York City grew larger than Philadelphia. New York City is now the most populated city in the USA with more than 8.2 million people. Hong Kong is the only city in the world with more completed skyscrapers than New York City. 36% of the current population of New York City was born outside the United States. This Day in History Aug 20, 1911 First around-the-world telegram sent On this day in 1911, a dispatcher in the New York Times office sends the first telegram around the world via commercial service. Exactly 66 years later, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sends a different kind of message--a phonograph record containing information about Earth for extraterrestrial beings--shooting into space aboard the unmanned spacecraft Voyager II. The Times decided to send its 1911 telegram in order to determine how fast a commercial message could be sent around the world by telegraph cable. The message, reading simply "This message sent around the world," left the dispatch room on the 17th floor of the Times building in New York at 7 p.m. on August 20. After it traveled more than 28,000 miles, being relayed by 16 different operators, through San Francisco, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, Bombay, Malta, Lisbon and the Azores--among other locations--the reply was received by the sa ...

Another birthday present. While the gift of the historic and wonderful Curiosity Mars landing can never be equaled, another gift of historic proportions has apparently been made to me, apparently coming from Jacob Rothschild & friends: The Head of Dope Inc. on a Platter. While I have primarily worked on science, inertial and magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion and related fields and have good friends with vastly more experience and knowledge concerning criminal activities, I have been on the world battlefield long enough to know when a major strategic operation has been launched. And while it is true that HSBC (the infamous Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank) is the fattest of the Dope Inc. dope banks, the older Standard Chartered Bank is the actual heart and brain of the beast. The wails from the White House and screaming at the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve over the "over zealous" actions by the New York authorities against Standard Chartered Banks money laundering (Standard says it was only a fe ...

Please check outh the link from my page to look at her designs and those she competed against. Most fashion professionals rank Kent State in the top five fashion schools in the country. And yes, Kent State University is a state university with a New York and Florence Italy studio. We were also the first American school to be invited to China's Fashion Week last week where they flew 7 of our students and 3 faculty members to attend and show their collections. We also have exchange programs in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Beijing and others I can't even think of right now. With 1,400 students, we will begin to offer a graduate program next year. Who wants more obama and gun control! Chicago likes to compare itself to other world cities, so Ward Room thought it would find out how we rank in violence. It turns out no one can top us. Among what are considered Alpha world cities, Chicago has the highest murder rate -- higher even than the Third World metropolises of Mexico City and Sao Paolo. Here’s how we rank in murders per 100,000 among cities we consider our peers, based on a projected murder total of 505 for this year. Singapore 0.4 Tokyo 0.5 Hong Kong 0.6 Berlin 1.0 Sydney 1.0 London 1.4 Toronto 1.7 Amsterdam 1.8 Paris 4.4 New York 6.0 Los Angeles 7.5 Mexico City 8.0 Moscow 9.6 Sao Paolo 15.6 Chicago 19.4 We could be doing worse: Caracas, Venezuela has a murder rate of 130 per 100,000.

"I took off from Hong Kong’s ultramodern airport after riding out there from downtown on a sleek high-speed train — with wireless connectivity that was so good I was able to surf the Web the whole way on my laptop. Landing at Kennedy Airport from Hong Kong was like going from the Jetsons to the Flintstones. I took the Acela, America’s sorry excuse for a bullet train, from New York to Washington. Along the way, I tried to use my cellphone to conduct an interview and my conversation was interrupted by three dropped calls within one 15-minute span. All I could think to myself was: If we’re so smart, why are other people living so much better than us?" Thomas Friedman, 2008

Weather permitting, the transit of Venus will be visible from much of Earth - Tuesday from the Western Hemisphere and Wednesday from the Eastern Hemisphere. Below are more examples of unintentionally hilarious English. They come from an Air France in New York bulletin, as reported in Knight-Ridder Newspapers many years ago. Even when grammatical, the examples are uproariously incorrect. The joke is as much on English as it is on the non-native speakers. In a Paris hotel: 'Please leave your values at the front desk.' In Bucharest: 'The lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable.' In a Japanese hotel: 'You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid.' In a Russian monastery: 'You are welcome to visit the cemetery where famous Russian and Soviet composers, artists and writers are buried daily except Thursday.' In an Austrian ski resort: 'Not to perambulate the corridors in the hours of repose in the boots of ascension.' A Hong Kong tailor shop: 'Ladies may have a fit upstairs.' In Germany's Black Forest: 'It is strictly forbidden on our Black Forest camping site that people of different sex, for instance, me ...
It all felt a little surreal, thought The Stewardess as she strolled down the street on Old Philadelphia. it felt like a layover...but not quite! There was the fact that she was here with her family; she glanced lovingly at her young daughter, holding her hand and enthusiastically singing out loud as they walked. And oh yeah! She certainly wasn't getting paid either! I guess it feels a little like a layover because it doesn't feel exactly like a vacation, mused The Stewardess. There was the Place for one thing: Philadelphia-it wasn't a name that stirred up passion and excitement like, say, New York, Hong Kong or Rome. Well-her husband's convention was in Philly, so in Philly they were. What was there to DO on Philadelphia anyway?? Of course, anywhere in America there was good shopping to be found; great prices, full selections and a North American size range! Not like in Asia where the people are tiny...only my FEET could have been Made In China, she thought ruefully. Here, there was MACY'S--NO stop even ...

In the world, following airports are very important hub in the word. 1.Europe zone: - FRA ( Frankfurt – Germany ) - CDC ( Charles de Gaulle – France) - LHR ( Heathrow – England) - AMS ( Amsterdam – Holland) 2.Asia Pacific and the Middle Ease - HKG ( Hong Kong) - SIN ( Singapore) - BKK ( Bangkok – Thailand) It is very regret that SGN ( Saigon – Vietnam) should have been in the list. However, it is Vietnam War that made other station such as BKK, and SIN replace SGN. - DXB ( Dubai – Arab) . Some 10 years ago, when a aircraft was not able to fly over 5000 kilometres, DXB has played a very vital role to be the busiest transit hub in a route from Asia to Europe. 3.America - SFO ( San Francisco - USA) - LAX ( Los Angeles – USA) - JFK ( New York – USA)

Bollywood News! Delhi Belly goes to China Delhi Belly directed by Abhinay Deo was one of the most talked about film last year. The film that garnered rave reviews from the audiences and critics alike and even created a new genre in Bollywood, is all now set to venture to the land of the rising sun. After 3 *** My Name Is Khan and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Delhi Belly will hit the Hong Kong theatres. However, the interesting part is that to capture the entire gamut of the Chinese populace the film will not just have subtitles, in fact the filmmakers have dubbed the film in Cantonese. The reason behind the Chinese release is that Hong Kong has a large young local and expat population, while Delhi Belly has done good business in cities like London, Singapore, Dubai, New York, Sydney and Melbourne, hopes are that it will resonate with the audiences in Hong Kong as well. Speaking about the forthcoming China release Amrita Pandey - Senior Vice President, International Distribution and Syndication, UTV Motio ...
A Hong Kong based Anthropologist says on New York Police. Tuesday, May 08, 2012 Human Rights in New York There is a disturbing report by the anthropologist David Graeber on the New York Police apparently using sexual assault against Occupy Wall Street protesters. He ties this to the city elite's ties to banking, especially to Mayor Bloomberg's statement that the police is his personal army. Bloomberg is, of course, number 20 on the Forbes Billionaires List (11th in the US), so has a vested interest in protecting the current financial system. Graeber also notes that Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is the former director of global security of the Wall Street firm Bear Stearns, so has also revolved between banking and policing. Is there any difference in Kelly's mind between protecting Bear Stearns and protecting "the people of New York," or does protecting the banks loom large in his image of his duty to "New York"? Americans are uncomfortable about this type of story on two levels: first, sexual assaults ...

Phnom Penh — Slowly but surely, Cambodia’s Visual Arts’ scene has been emerging from the shadow of the Pol Pot era, nurtured by a clutch of mostly Western-owned galleries dotted around the capital. Years of faith and investment are finally paying off. Moreover, among Phnom Penh’s 40 or so professional artists, two are fetching handsome prices in New York, London and Hong Kong.Born in 1974 and 1971 respectively, Leang Seckon and Pich Sopheap were infants when civil war and the Khmer Rouge regime combined to kill nearly three million Cambodians. Mr. Pich remembers the chaos that followed Pol Pot’s retreat in 1979, sheltering in ruined pagodas amidst the scarred rice fields of northern Battambang Province.Mr. Leang hails from the southern region of Svay Rieng, a place that was carpet-bombed by U.S. aircraft during the Vietnam War. His foremost memories as a boy tending buffalo are of his mother repairing clothes with fragments of material and of bathing in water he now believes was polluted with Ag ...

Spellbound and deeply provoked by A Dangerous Method- a movie I just watched en-route from New York to Hong Kong. An insightful expose on the ethics and conflicts between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. Definitely best acting performance by Kiera Knightly to-date (deserves an Oscar) backed by smouldering performance by Michael Fassbender and steely Viggo Mortensen. MUST WATCH R-RATED VERSION.
