By Jennifer Graham February 10, 2014 Boston Globe IF you're white and younger than 50, odds are you've never heard of the *** Motorist Green Book. For African-Americans in the 1940s and '50s, the Green Book was as ubiquitous and necessary as the Bible. Published by a New York mail carrier named Victor H. Green, the publication was similar to the American Automobile Association TourBook. Whites worried they might run out of gas, not that they might run out of gas with no nearby gas station or a hotel that would serve them. And whites never feared being caught in a "sundowner town" where blacks were not allowed after dark. But this was before the Green Book, an information superhighway that operated underground to help the black traveler "keep from running into difficulties and embarrassments." It ceased publication in 1966, two years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, but a 1949 edition is available digitally through the School of Hard Knocks, University of Life Michigan, and the 20th-anniversary . ...
Somehow, Sheriff Joe Arpaio wasn’t paying attention on the day that public officials were told that they must be politically correct at all times. Sheriff Joe is an old-fashioned political figure who speaks his mind and he won’t hide the truth simply because the bullies in New York, Washington, and Los Angeles insist that he do so. (Read More: Obama’s Birth Certificate Being Questioned In Alabama Supreme Court.) Last week, Sheriff Joe didn’t pull any punches when it came to his Cold Case Posse’s research into Obama’s long-form birth certificate (it’s fake) or about the media’s deliberate cover-up of the story: Over the years, and especially within the last few weeks, those Americans who have studied President Obama and his administration closely have learned two very important things about the man and those who support him: they will talk freely about things that benefit them (even if their loose talk costs lives) and they will lie if they can no longer remain silent. Before Benghazi, only ...
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For his last game as Jets special teams coordinator, Mike Westhoff will have his son John by his side. It's a sweet indulgence from a team that has put together signed banners and other memorabilia for a coach who made HBO's "Hard Knocks" worth watching in 2010. "I'm happy and proud to be at the place that I am at my career," Westhoff said. "Few of us get to leave this business of our volition and I'm able to do that, so for that I'm very, very proud." The irascible Westhoff, who once claimed to have invented the onside kick with an indeterminable amount of seriousness, beat a bone cancer that left him with a limp after surgery. He also was easily the most entertaining coordinator interview of the week. For his last news conference, Westhoff started off with an imitation of offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo's rant to the New York media, making everyone in the room laugh. Westhoff could be a candidate to be part of a broadcast team, and admitted he'd like to have a job like former ...
