Today we mourn the loss of former Governor Mario Cuomo. I had the distinction and pleasure of serving with him in the early stages of my career in the New York State Assembly, as did my father, when the Governor was first elected in 1982. He was an intellectual giant, a great orator and and a quintessential New Yorker. I recall him being desperately proud of his roots, his family and the unique opportunity that he had been given to serve as the Governor of our Empire State. Some know he was an accomplished athlete but I saw first hand his skills as well as his sharp elbows on the basketball court; fair but tough. I also vividly recall him speaking to me after a debate on the death penalty - he had listened to my comments and had taken the time to compliment me on staking out a principled position, which was diametrically opposed to his. New York justifiably mourns his loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Cuomo, who always epitomized class in every sense of the word as First Lady, as well as to the ...

Hello, everyone! Apologies for the late notice on this -- but in case you are free and willing to attend: Maureen Koetz is our GOP nominee for the New York State Assembly from the 65th Assembly District (includes parts of Lower Manhattan). The incumbent is Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver who, as the headlines keep reminding us, is uniquely shady in unique ways. In particular, Silver attempted to cover up accusations of sexual harassment against another Dem leader with taxpayer dollars. Maureen is a very good candidate who is working very hard in this race. A Queens native who lives in Battery Park City, she was an acting assistant secretary of the U.S. Air Force during the George W. Bush administration. She also served as a U.S. Navy attorney. I am serving on the host committee for a fundraiser Tuesday evening (October 7) to benefit Maureen's campaign. Elect Todd Kaminsky to the New York State Assembly! An election is not over until the last vote is counted. The race has begun, and Todd Kaminsky will need our support and most importantly our VOTE! We can take nothing for granted in this election. If you can serve as a Block Captain, please reach out to Todd. This grass-roots election campaign will require that we work house-by house, and block-by-block to share Todd's message, and his vision for our Assembly District. Todd will be a strong advocate for our Assembly District, however to get to Albany he needs our monetary support to fund a campaign, and most importantly your vote on election day. Please make a commitment TODAY to show up and vote for Todd on election day - rain, shine, snow, hail does not matter. If the polls say Todd is projected to win by a 90% margin it still doesn't matter. What matters is Your Vote on Election Day!
GMHC Applauds Assembly’s Passage of Bill that Ensures HIV Education and Referrals to Testing & Care for Those Recently Released from Prison Thanks Sponsor Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Speaker Sheldon Silver for Their Support Today, the New York State Assembly passed legislation that will help to ensure incarcerated individuals receive educational information about HIV prevention, instructions about how to obtain free HIV testing, and referrals to community-based HIV prevention, education and counseling services upon their release. Demetrius Thomas, an attorney in GMHC’s Public Policy Department, said: “GMHC is grateful to the Assembly for passing legislation critical to fighting the HIV epidemic. Its implications extend well beyond the confines of correctional facilities. According to the CDC, up to 50% of new infections are caused by those who do not know their status. HIV testing and prevention education and counseling reduce high-risk behavior that can lead to infection when formerly incarcerated p ...

Today we completed the 18th and final forum of the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction. What began at the Brentwood Campus of the Suffolk Community College ended in the Seneca Nation of Indians Territory in western New York. I would like to thank Seneca Nation President Barry Snyder and the entire Tribal Council for hosting today’s historic forum along with my State Senate colleagues serving on the Task Force. During that time we heard from 276 panelists, over 2,300 attendees, and listened to over 59.5 hours of testimony. The information and insights we have gained as a result of these forums, and the added input from countless New Yorkers affected by this epidemic who have contacted our offices directly, have helped us craft 25 separate pieces of legislation designed to combat this crisis from all sides. These bills will be considered by the senate in the coming weeks and I urge the New York State Assembly and Governor Cuomo to join us in supporting these life-saving initiatives.

The 44th Anniversary of the Stonewall Inn-surrection Introduction to a Cautionary Critique I am very encouraged by the Supreme Court's ruling declaring DOMA (the so-called Defense of Marriage Act) unconstitutional according to the Fifth Amendment's Equal Protection clause, and now same-sex couples who legally marry in states that have such rights will receive federal marriage benefits. Also, by throwing the decision on California's Proposition 8 back to the lower court, which had already judged the voter-approved ballot initiative unconstitutional, the Supreme Court has virtually guaranteed same-sex couples in California the legal right to marry. On May 9 of last year, President Barack Obama, in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts, "came out" for marriage equality, asserting that "same-sex couples should be able to get married." In 2011 I watched when the news broke that the New York State Senate, following the New York State Assembly's lead, had passed a bill legalizing marriage for same-sex couples. I ...

GMHC Applauds the NYS Assembly for Passing Medical Marijuana Bill *** Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) applauds the New York State Assembly for passing A.6357 (Gottfried)/ S.4406 (Savino). This legislation will allow physicians to discuss and prescribe limited access to medical marijuana for patients with severe conditions, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and other debilitating or life-threatening illnesses. Janet Weinberg, Chief Operating Officer of GMHC commented: "As a survivor of breast cancer, my challenges this year taught me first-hand the issues that GMHC's clients go through. I lived through immune suppression, neuropathy, skin issues, medication reactions and deep sadness about my health. Each one of these issues parallels the lives of someone living with HIV. Therefore I am relieved that medical marijuana could be a possible treatment for me and so many others." Research indicates that medical marijuana provides much-needed therapeutic and palliative relief for many of the s ...
Congrats to Richard Gottfried on passing the new and improved Medical Marijuana legislation. Here is what our client Gaia Plant-Based Medicine has to say about it: Statement by Meg Sanders, CEO, Gaia Plant-Based Medicine “We commend the New York State Assembly, especially Chairman Gottfried and Speaker Silver, for passing the new, sensible and well-regulated medical marijuana legislation. Today’s passage is a significant step toward New York’s eventual adoption of this progressive initiative which is beneficial to business, taxpayers and especially patients. This legislation represents the best model for medical marijuana in the country and is the result of hard work, research and learning from the mistakes and successes of other states. This is not a pathway to legalization, but is instead a means to providing safe, limited access to proven medication for patients who seek relief from the debilitating effects of serious diseases. We look forward to working with Senator Savino in getting the bill t ...

THIS IS NOT OKAY!!! STOP KILLING BABIES!!! "New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo isn’t resting on his liberal laurels after rushing through tough new gun control laws. Now, he’s pressing the state legislature to pass a sweeping new package of abortion legislation. The Catholic Center reports that among other things, it would allow virtually unlimited late term abortions, remove protections for religious hospitals that don’t want to perform abortions, and classify abortion as a “fundamental right” so it could never be challenged again. Even more disturbing, since many doctors refuse to perform abortions, it would allow any “licensed health care practitioner” to do it. Combine that with the ban on informing parents, and your teenage daughter could be getting a dangerous surgical procedure from someone who isn’t even a doctor without your knowledge or consent. And what is this package of legislation ironically named? The “Reproductive Health Bill.” Let’s pray the New York State Assembly has the g ...

The anti-gun bills continue to roll in. The latest bill, introduced in the New York State Assembly by Democrat Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, seeks to force all gun owners to purchase at least $1 million in liability insurance to cover any damages caused by firearms. It would be a mandatory requirement for anyone who owns a gun, as those who refuse to comply within 30 days would have their firearms confiscated. “Any person in this state who shall own a firearm shall, prior to such ownership, obtain and continuously maintain a policy of liability insurance in an amount not less than one million dollars specifically covering any damages resulting from any negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person,” the bill, S2353, states. “Failure to maintain such insurance shall result in the immediate revocation of such owner’s registration, license and any other privilege to own such firearm,” the bill adds. Further, even if a New Yorker’s gun is stolen, they are ...

Today's English lesson: Pronunciation is IMPORTANT. I was watching the news just now, and they were running a report on some proposed legislation that would authorize the government to revoke the drivers license of anyone who who had more than $10,000 in unpaid taxes. They did a vox populi piece, with people saying whether they thought it was a good or bad idea, while adding nothing of substance. The reporter concludes by noting that, despite the fact that it's doubtful whether the law will pass, many motorists are nervous as the bill "makes its way through the state legislator." Now, perhaps he meant "the state legislature," in which case he would be referring to the process by which a bill is proposed, then voted on. But the way he chose to pronounce it, he inadvertently suggested that a member of the New York State Assembly or Senate literally ate the paper on which the proposed law was printed, and that New Yorkers were on the edge of their seats vis-a-vis the digestion thereof. Pronunciation is impor ...
This is a forum for open opinion and I have frustratedly sat here and shook my head at the madness of some of my "friends". But if the ignorant and oblivious have the right to speak, why not logic? Today a friend called out for action. To right the horrible injustice done to HIM. So you know what Aquaman, I find your opinions on NY state's swift and dramatic legislation RIDICULOUS and JUVENILE and SELF-CENTERED. You live in a country based on social contract. Your rights end where my rights begin. The New York State Assembly took measures today to protect everyone's rights to safety. I APPLAUD them for it. The opinions that SHOULD matter in this conversation are that of the respected professionals including General Stanley McChrystal and Colin Powell, who both spoke out this week on this matter. People who have had the tremendous responsibility for putting assault weapons and high capacity magazines in the hands of our young men and women in order to protect themselves from war. The assessment of ...

After Reflecting on last Nights Election Results, We at Parents Hudson Valley would like to make some observations about the races in Orange County. 1. We would like to congratulate Claudia Tenney an incumbent Assemblywoman who we endorsed and is now a new Representative for Orange County in the New York State Assembly. Assemblywoman Tenney was clearly being "punished" by both parties for her Voice of Values and Independence when they "gerrymandered" a district which no one would stand to say makes any geographic sense. As the saying goes, the Assemblywoman had lemons and made lemonade. Given her concentration on constituents rather than Party, the GOP continued to attempt to punish her by encouraging and aiding a young Mayor to Primary her from Orange County. We believe this Mayor, while well intentioned, was ill-advised by the party establishment who gave him counsel and the Republican voters of the district confirmed thisin the Primary. With 100% of the vote in from yesterday, Claudia was again r ...

Remember -- when you go to the polls on Tuesday that this election is about more than the national stage: it also concerns your own backyard. For those of you in Assembly District 67, vote Linda B. Rosenthal for New York State Assembly and Brad Holyman for New York State Senate (District 27).
