While there are 7 undisputed wonders of the ancient world, the wonders of the modern world are frequently debated. Let's take a look at some of the commonly accepted engineer wonders of the modern world. Today's Random Fact: Empire State Building. Finished in 1931, it towers 1,250 ft over New York City. Until the first tower of the World Trade Center was finished in 1972, it was the world's tallest building. Itaipu Dam. Built by Brazil and Paraguay on the Parana River, the dam is the world's largest hydroelectric power plant. Completed in 1991, it took 16 years to build this series of dams whose length totals 7,744 m. It used 15 times more concrete than the Channel Tunnel. CN Tower. In 1976, the tower became the world's tallest freestanding structure. It looms about one-third of a mile high (1,815 ft) above Toronto, Canada. A glass floor on the observation deck lets you look 342 m down to the ground. Panama Canal. It took 34 years to create this 50-mile-long canal across the Isthmus of Panama. The amount ...
Reporting from FEMA Region VI. The FBI Allowed the 1993 WTC Bombing to Happen THE New York Times * * * * * Thursday October 28, 1993 Page A1 "Tapes Depict Proposal to Thwart Bomb Used in Trade Center Blast" By Ralph Blumenthal Law-enforcement officials were told that terrorists were building a bomb that was eventually used to blow up the World Trade Center, and they planned to thwart the plotters by secretly substituting harmless powder for the explosives, an informer said after the blast. The informer was to have helped the plotters build the bomb and supply the fake powder, but the plan was called off by an F.B.I. supervisor who had other ideas about how the informer, Emad Salem, should be used, the informer said. The account, which is given in the transcript of hundreds of hours of tape recordings that Mr. Salem secretly made of his talks with law-enforcement agents, portrays the authorities as being in a far better position than previously known to foil the February 26th bombing of New York City's tal ...
Heavy fog blankets Lower Manhattan, including the now-open One World Trade Center. Julio Cortez/AP One World Trade Center, or the "Freedom Tower," as it was formerly known, soars above New York City, finally filling a void left by the 9/11 terror attacks. The brilliant blue-silver facade glints no matter where you are in the city—nothing less than a "beacon of hope, just like the Statue of Liberty," says the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the site in a joint venture with real estate giant the Durst Organization. The tower is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. And it's also supposed to be one of the greenest—a first on its scale to aim for the US Green Building Council's LEED gold certification, a coveted prize for sustainable building design. One World Trade Center features lighting that reacts to sunshine, rain harvesting, and a state-of-the-art onsite fuel cell installation, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Kate Middleton and Prince William Attend St. Andrews 600th Anniversary Dinner: Source: Vogue:– After a whirlwind tour of New York City that’s taken them from Brooklyn to One World Trade Center, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dressed in black tie to attend the University of St. Andrews 600th Anniversary Gala Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—a date night, if you will. Catherine opted for a Jenny Packham dress sans clutch. After ascending the steps to the museum, they mingled with Anna Wintour, Olivier Sarkozy, and Mary-Kate Olsen on the Vélez Blanco Patio. Post-cocktails, bagpipers signaled the start of dinner in the Temple of Dendur, and the Duke and Duchess took seats at their table, where they were joined by Renée Fleming and Seth Meyers for a meal of mushroom-crusted tenderloin and Scottish salmon. The evening’s MC then took the stage to kick off the program and pay tribute to the school so many in the room have called home. 36 View all images of Kate Middleton Photo: Courtesy of J ...
Before their destruction, an average of 70,000 people visited the World Trade Center's Twin Towers each day. The World Trade Center Towers in New York City had an average of 70,000 visitors each day, before their destruction in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The North Tower and South Tower each were the tallest buildings in New York City at 110 stories tall, and were home to 430 companies. Between the two towers, around 35,000 employees resided in the office space. It was estimated that between workers and visitors, around 30,000 cups of coffee were served each day. Although the towers were mainly known for the 3,000 casualties that occurred on September 11, 2001, 17 babies had been born at the towers since its construction in 1973.

Another Point to Ponder: On Dec 7, 1941, the Japanese military pulled off a daring sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Americans were immediately called to war and in less than 4 years, the Allied military units defeated the Japanese, Germans and Italians. The *** were forced into an "unconditional surrender". On Sep 11, 2001 terrorist forces with no national affiliation pulled another "sneak attack" on the World Trade Center Towers in New York City. 13 Years Later we are still fighting these Armies without a nation. What many fail to recognize is the differing motivation for each attack. The *** were part of an Axis of nations whose goal was to take over the world. They planned to defeat all the militaries of their opponents and assume control of those nations. The terrorists, on the other hand, were simply striking a blow in support of their religious ideology. These guys (and some women) have beliefs far different than those of our fathers and grandfathers. Our nation has long been one based on ...

September 11, 2001 is a day that will live in infamy. A day that changed my country forever. A day that stirred hatred and fear in my heart and soul unlike anything I had ever felt before. A day of horror. A day no one should EVER forget. I had just walked home from the bus stop after sending Alex to school. Michelle was home sick that day. I walked through the den and saw smoke coming from the World Trade Center. My first thought was "Another attempt ?". I remember saying "What in the world is going on in New York City?" and Michelley said "Mommy , a plane hit the building !". I, like many of you, immediately thought it was a tragic accident and sat down to watch. I called my parents and my brother . We were quite shocked . I walked away for a moment and my phone rang . My brother said "Sis, a second plane has hit the towers ! We are at war ! Where are the girls ?". I told him Alex had just left for school and Michelle was home sick . He asked "What do you want to do ?" and I replied "I want to get Ale . ...

(EMAIL SENT TO ALL US BNSE PERSONNEL on 9/11/2014) Hello everyone, Thirteen years ago I was driving to work and heard on the radio an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Didn’t think much of it as New York City has a long history of airplanes crashing into buildings including a B-25 that crashed into the Empire State Building at the end of WWII. Shortly later I saw the second attack live on television. Declared or undeclared, the United States of America has been at war ever since. Our service here in this remote theater is little recognized and overlooked amongst the history sweeping around us today: Ukraine, ISIS, Syria, Yemen, Ebola and Princess Kate is pregnant again. People are fickle consumers of news. That is to be expected; peacekeepers and nation-builders are unheralded and soon forgotten. Yet what we do here is vitally important to victory in the greater war on terror. This region has been at the heart of world conflict for 3,000 years. Only 100 years ago the Balkans ignited WWI ...
Minoru Yamasaki designed the new headquarters for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in 1962. The Michigan Consolidated Gas Building was his first skyscraper, and he used elements from this design for the now-destroyed World Trade Center in New York City. The main structure sits on a raised platform that conceals the loading dock and service entrances. It contains 26 usable floors, a double-height mechanical penthouse, and one floor below ground, reaching a height of 430 ft (130 m). The lobby rises two stories from the base and is enclosed by glass panels framed in chrome. Accent panels have the same hexagonal design as the window frames on the upper stories. The lobby walls are recessed from the building facade to create a loggia on all four sides of the building. The floor of the loggia is covered with white marble cut in a hexagonal design and flows uninterrupted to the interior lobby floor and up the walls of the elevator banks. The ceiling of the main level consists of coffered square panels that ...

And like that . . . poof . . . my practice had disappeared. Also gone were the balance and deep fulfillment I had felt during my meditation days. I was living to work, to fill an empty part of me that I had forgotten. It had been a decade since I had slept through the night. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, today announced the filing of a settlement agreement with the City of New York regarding allegations that the Fire Department (FDNY) violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by failing to reasonably accommodate a disabled firefighter. The United States’ complaint was brought on behalf of Gerald Snell, a former FDNY fire captain who suffered irreversible lung damage while participating in search, rescue, recovery, and cleanup efforts at the World Trade Center site in New York City after September 11, 2001. The complaint alleges that the FDNY failed to reasonably accommodate Mr. Snell’s disability and forced him to retire despite his desire to remain with the FDNY in a non-firefighting capacity. = rest:

On Jan. 7, exactly two weeks before we are to simultaneously celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and inaugurate Barack Obama to his second term as President of the United States, sinister advertisements went up in dozens of subway stations around New York City, making evident that despite the undoubted strides our nation has made toward achieving justice and equality, bigotry and fear-mongering remain alive and well in America. The American Freedom Defense Initiative, headed by Pamela Geller, an inflammatory demagogue with a long history of anti-Muslim incitement, purchased space in 39 stations for ads with an image of the burning World Trade Center and a quote attributed to the Quran saying, "Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers." The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which administers New York's transit system, said the ads will run for a month. This new ad campaign is Round Two of Geller's pernicious campaign to whip up hatred of American Muslims by placing ads ...

DONT LET THE MEDIA FOOL YOU! Sandy Hook Elementary was actually a Terrorist Training facility controlled by Al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda controls the media, and if the great Hero had not killed those young terrorists, they would have started suicide bombing New York City. Sandy Hook was where the kindergarteners who attacked the World Trade Center were trained. YES! SANDY HOOK DID WTC! DONT VILLAINIZE ADAM LANZA! He was a great American Hero. Dont let the terrorists win. God Bless America!
Giant Spire That Will Top One WTC Set To Arrive In Manhattan New York (CBSNewYork) - A major piece of the new One World Trade Center has arrived in New York City. Part of the giant spire that will top the tower arrived by barge from New Jersey. The nine largest pieces of the spire, each weighing 70 tons, were brought across New York Harbor from Port Newark on Tuesday. The spire is divided into 18 sections, weighing between 5 tons and more than 67 tons. Workers will begin hoisting them on Wednesday. "Best way to describe it is it's like putting a candle on top of a cake," World Trade Center construction director Steven Plate told WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell. The pieces of the 408-foot-tall spire will be assembled on top of the soaring tower, something Plate called extreme engineering. "Everything on this project is either cutting edge, state-of-the-art or something that's never been done before," Plate said. When complete, the spire will allow the building to reach the symbolic height of 1,776 feet. Construc ...
A New York City judge has rejected claims in a lawsuit that United Airlines can be held responsible for the collapse of a Third World Trade Center building after the Twin Towers fell in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. I am blessed. I am also spending my 15th day in Hudson County NJ working the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Hudson Co is directly across the Hudson River from New York City. I was allowed some time off today so a few coworkers and I ventured over to catch a glimpse of the parade and we had a Turkey and stuffing dinner at the New York Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. After dinner we ventured to the 9/11 Ground Zero site and memorial park. What an awsome way to realize Americas spirit and resolve. I was not ready for St Pauls church beside the World Trade Center site. I am not going to elaborate here but when you see me you need to ask. Always pray for my family, I have siblings and siblings In-laws with health issues. Kim, Clint and Courtney, and Amanda and I are wonderful. We are healthy, safe and secure and full of love for all. Again let me say I am blessed! Even though I did not get to spend this holiday with my family to see the work that is being done here to sup ...
Bill Clinton and Boris Yelstin were dismantling WMD Arsenals, USS Independence had Already been de-Nuked by March of 1993 so *** Cheney, Ollie North, and Dana Rorhabachar only ones who Could get Afghan Arabs and Baluchis into New York City to Bomb World Trade Center
It has been brought to my attention that the reason New York City was hit by Hurricane Sandy is because of President Obama. I am shocked but now I understand that the reason New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina and the World Trade Center was attacked was because of President Bush! Get Real People. Do you really believe this crap! Get it through your head that God really is in control and shut up. If you want to believe that Obama is the devil incarnate and the reason for every problem in the last 4 years and beyond, don't worry, God will take care of it.
Dangers of Hurricane Sandy Hitting New York City The high winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Sandy that are expected to lash New York City through Tuesday could bring damage to the city unlike that seen from any hurricane before. New York’s structures, especially high-rise buildings, could be extremely affected by the heavy winds. The force of winds hitting the top of skyscrapers will be much greater than that at ground level, according to the National Weather Service. The winds of 30 to 50 mph, with gusts possible up to 90 mph, that are hitting New York could blow out windows, especially in high-rise buildings. Glass could not only fly through apartment buildings but could also fall to the streets, hitting those below. It is recommended that residents in high rises close their curtains and stay away from windows. Strong gusts could also cause skyscrapers to sway, also increasing the chances of debris falling. Cranes atop skyscrapers under construction, like the new World Trade Center building, in New ...
Video on msnbc.com: Floodwater is now receding following significant flooding in the Lower Manhattan area of New York City, blocks from the World Trade Center site. WNBC’s Ida Siegal reports.
Home! A fantastic week in New York City for Movement Day, Justice learning track. Highlights? It's Manhattan, which is enough! UN in town (saw Benjamin Netanyahu), protests and nation convoys everywhere, fancy family style Italian with friends. Chimay. Tenement Museum (review coming, that was awesome!). World Trade Center. Helping bleeding guy in airport rest-room for 30 minutes. Excellent learning from Rick McKinley and Tim Keller. Clarification on what the heck The Peace Pastor is all about (and not about). Have you 'liked' TPP yet? Met author Jim Martin from IJM and read his great new book The Just Church (review coming!). With Andy Sytsma, Jim Herrington, Chad Clarkson.
I had just finished feeding and checking cattle in Snook. My phone rang and I will Never Forget...the voice on the other end said "the World Trade Centers have just been hit by planes". I nearly dropped the phone. I instantly flashed back to Spring Break 2010 when I was in New York City with Dr. Howard Hesby, and we were supposed to have a meeting in one of the conference rooms in Tower 2. Consequently, I had an interview for an internship at that same time, and did not join the group. I remembered vividly thinking, "Ah, I'll visit it another time". I've been back to New York City since, and visited the World Trade Center. However, it was a completely different scene. Instead of peering out over NYC with the best view in the city, I looked down into the 7 story crater as they prepared to replace those towers with a new tower. Spent the rest of the day watching the news, like everyone else. I remember Kyle Field awash in Red, White, and Blue, with pride like never before.and still get goosebumps t ...
There is something special to being in New York City on 9/11 staring up at the Freedom Tower where World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood

A 9-11 Miracle You've Never Heard Hide Details FROM: Dr. Harlan Kilstein TO: debbie yeager Message flagged Tuesday, September 11, 2012 6:48 AM The trauma of 9-11 is still raw on the American psyche Anyone who saw the planes crash and the towers crumble has that moment seared into their collective memory. For months America ground to a halt. Parents ran to their children's schools to take them home so they could protect them. My brother is a critical care doctor who raced to the scene to help survivors - but there weren't any to help. They were vaporized in an instant. A friend shared this story with me and I pass it on to you as food for thought on this sad sad day. Please share the story and shed some light on this dark dark day. Pasquale Buzzelli was silent for 11 years and now reveals how he fell 22 Floors after the 9/11 attack on New York City's World Trade Center's Twin Towers - and survived. His tale has been considered a fable, one of those imaginary stories that make the rounds after a disaster, b ...
I remember back in 2000 when I was in the Catholic seminary in New York City. Every Friday, we would eat at "The Windows of the World" Restaurant on the 110th floor of the World Trade Center. On a clear day, you could see into 3 different states. The ocean would shine so bright and beautiful with Lady Liberty in the middle, welcoming the huddled masses yearning to be free. One year later on September 11, I watched as the towers were struck by evil men. A documentary on the towers several Years Later interviewed the head chef of the Widows restaurant about what it was like that day. He said that he was running late and could not make it in until 9:30, so he had his sous chef Take Charge and prepare for lunch and dinner. The planes hit, and the kitchen staff knew there was no way to survive. The sous chef called the head chef and asked what they should do...the head chef replied, "Just do on doing what you love...cooking. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best." I like to think that the kitchen staff died ...
So...instead of trudging through New York City on the always lovely Cross Bronx Expressway, Sue and I took the Scenic Route, via the Triboro, BQE, Gowanis Expressway, and the Verrazzano Bridge. Views of Manhattan were spectacular. Took about 45 minutes longer than using the GWB, but was well worth it. That new World Trade Center tower is great, but it sure is missing a Twin.
I'm a lucky guy in regards to the weather. It was beautiful in New York City this weekend. I will post some nice photos when I get back including WTC1, built on the site of the old World Trade Center, Citi Field -Home of the Mets, Chinatown etc. Funny it has been 15 years, and I actually felt like a tourist in the city I grew up in. ALSO, SARATOGA SPRINGS-UPSTATE N.Y.is beautiful this time of year and it is horse-racing season! THE Travers Stakes actually ended in a tie. So hello, rainy South Florida.
San Francisco (AP) - The Golden State Warriors on Sunday announced the architecture team chosen to design a new sports and entertainment complex in San Francisco for the team. The team is now in the final stage of negotiating an agreement with the multi-national collaborative Snohetta and the Fortune 500 firm AECOM, officials said. Snohetta has worked on projects including the SFMOMA expansion, the redesign of Times Square in New York City, the new National Opera in Oslo and the new Museum at the World Trade Center site. AECOM has experience designing sports facilities, team officials said. "We want to build a venue that is not only innovative by today or tomorrow's standards, but that will stand the test of time and befits the importance of the location," said Peter Guber, co-executive chairman of the Warriors. "Great cities have great buildings in great locations," Guber added. "San Francisco is a great city." The Warriors, who have a lease at Oracle Arena in Oakland through 2017, announced in May that ...
Yesterday we took on New York City for 12 hours: MegaBus, Madison Square Garden, Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, Magnolia's Bakery on Bleecker St. so Megan and Eddie could experience cupcake awesomeness, the World Trade Center site, Chelsea Market, napping on the HighLine, FAO Schwarz, Rockefeller Center & Top of the Rock at sunset, Times Square and yes, a crazy ride on the back of a bike with a poor man in flipflops pulling us 3 while I'm 8 months pregnant. It was great! I feel like we lived a whole summer in one day. :)
On October 20, 2001 I took my High School band from 29 Palms, California (a very proud Marine Corps town) to a competition in San Jacinto, Ca. We left early in the morning so as to have plenty of time to rehearse and prepare. I had heard that the “Flag Across America” from New York City to Los Angeles was coming through 29 Palms and Yucca Valley, but that it would be at “oh-dark-thirty”, so I had not paid much attention to it. As the bus full of excited band students and flag team started down the Morongo grade, we passed a slow moving van with its flashers on. My reaction was “what in the world is that fellow doing going so slowly on this grade?” As we passed it, the sign on the side explained the slow speed. Flag Across America proudly proclaimed the support van helping the courageous feat being unfolded right in front of us. Runners form all over the country were taking turns running legs of up to thirty miles or more so that a flag from the World Trade Center could be seen and help unify o ...
Second half of vacation... Sunday: Went to mass with the family, went out to brunch, drove up to Connecticut and ate at this place called ShakeShack...it's like a high-end version of Five Guys. Pretty good. Monday: Did nothing. Lounged around the house all day reading. Then my aunt cooked chicken and ribs with squash, eggplant, zucchini, and corn on the cob. I turned into a serious glutton during that meal. Tuesday: Went to the beach and enjoyed myself pretty thoroughly out there (didn't swim though). Then we went out for Italian food. Another pretty low-key day. Wednesday: Went to New York City to visit the World Trade Center memorial, but it was raining. So instead I saw Evita AND Mary Poppins on Broadway. In between, we ate at this place called Carmines with absolutely massive portions of food. Now THAT was a fun day. And now I'm back in California. Exciting...
Got a call from Loren tonight...he finished work in Hartford early today so decided to take a field trip to New York City! He'd been to Times Square, Central Park, World Trade Center, the Apollo Theater, and the Statue of Liberty...he just had to call to rub it in!
On a hot summer morning in New York City in 1974, a bold young Frenchman named Philippe Petit walked a high wire he illegally rigged between the World Trade Center's Twin Towers. At daybreak, he gave the high wire performance of all time. Petit's feat became known as the "artistic crime of the centu...
So great to be home after a very nice vacation! Stayed in NJ at Wyndham Gardens. Met Rich's family, then spent 3 days in New York City. Visited 9-11 Memorial and World Trade Center, took ferry out to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty, visited Time Square, rode through Central Park with a personal tour guide, and went to a Broadway show (Jersey Boys - story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.) Rode the Subway (Yikes!) Shopping too, of course, and Bubba Gump's. Then went to Gettysburg for a couple of days on our way home. Loved, loved, loved the tour of the battlefields, Gettysburg Cemetery and museums. Stood where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. So worth the time spent!! But - there's no place like home!
"I want to do something. I want to go and hug New York City." (Melissa Etheridge, in contextul Atentatelor de la World Trade Center, 11 septembrie 2001)
Eleven years ago this summer, Lt. Harry Wanamaker Jr., a 58-year-old veteran New York City firefighter assigned to Marine Company 1, posed proudly on a fireboat against the skyline of Lower Manhattan with Welles Remy Crowther, 24, an equities trader at Sandler O’Neill & Partners who worked on the 104th floor of 2 World Trade Center. On the face of it, they seemed to have little in common. But there was in fact a close bond. Both men were volunteer members of the Empire Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1, in Upper Nyack, N.Y., and Lieutenant Wanamaker was among the firefighters who had trained Mr. Crowther. Three months after the photo was taken, both men played vital roles in the rescue work of Sept. 11, 2001. High up in the south tower, with his trademark red bandanna covering his mouth and nose for protection, Mr. Crowther drew on his training to save numerous lives — no one will ever know how many — as he organized rescue efforts, calmed survivors with his authoritative directions and carried the wou ...
New York City: It's the center of the U.S. financial system and for many people, the capital of the world. That's why the Big Apple remains a top terror target. From the 1993 World Trade Center bombing to 9/11, and more recently, the Times Square bomber, terrorists have repeatedly targeted Ma...

When I watched Philippe Petit cross between the World Trade Center on a highwire, I learned something amazing. Petit wasn't defying the establishment, or New York City's financial industry, or even death. He was defying the moment. Everyone knows, you don't step out on that wire. So did he. He stepped out anyway.

Disco queen Donna Summer died this morning at age 63, TMZ reports. Sources say the singer of such classics as “Last Dance” and “Hot Stuff” died in Florida after battling lung cancer, which she reportedly thought she contracted via toxic particles in New York City after the World Trade Center attacks. She had been trying to keep the severity of her illness quiet, and was hoping to finish her new album, sources say.
New York City's tallest skyscraper may be receiving the Danny Meyer touch, as the restauranteur is one of seven vying to operate 1 World Trade Center's official restaurant atop the building's three-story observation deck. The oil wealth in Dubai is incredible...evidenced by the world's first six-star hotel and the TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD! The new World Trade Center now being built at Ground Zero in New York City will fall considerably short of this tower in Dubai. Personally, whose is bigger is not very important to me. But I do find it curious that thanks to Western dollars and European euros, the Arab world now has the bragging rights! Curious as well that almost all the economies of the free world are suffering, yet the totalitarian economies of Arabia and China are prospering! Something ain't right!
