The first New Year was celebrated 4,000 years by the ancient Babylonians. The top three places to celebrate New Year’s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World and of course, New York City. Internationally, one of the biggest celebrations is in Sydney, Australia. More than 80,000 fireworks are set off from Sydney Harbour Bridge. The tradition has continued in Times Square, except for in 1942 and 1943. The ball was not lowered because of wartime restrictions. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. Chinese New Year is celebrated the second full moon after the winter solstice. Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. Apples and honey are traditionally eaten. In Ancient Rome the New Year began on March 1. Using a ba ...

Lessons learned from a trip to New York City: 1. Express beats local any day if the week. 2. Times Square is cool and all but. 3. A two hour bus tour around the boroughs kicks major butt. 4. Wanting to see and having to see are two different things. 5. Why? Because you HAVE to go to Ground Zero. Otherwise you haven't really seen New York City. 6. The Staten Island Ferry is cool. 7. Apparently a New Yorkers version of "five minutes away" is significantly different then mine. 8. New York pizza is THE best. 9. People are strange. 10. And Finally, watching two first timers in NYC is just about priceless, especially when one of them is Nancy Krause. Pics to come.

A few months ago, a friend called me to tell me about a remarkable choir and orchestra. She continued to tell me how the Florida Worship Choir and Orchestra would be traveling to New York City to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song. When I heard words like Central Park, Times Square, Carnegie Hall and Brooklyn Tabernacle, I was in awe of the doors that God had opened for ministry. Little did I know that I would have the opportunity to not only join the choir, but that I would also be able to participate in this life-changing mission trip. It was evident that God walked ahead of us every step of the way. I also began to realize that this was not truly my first multi-day mission trip, even though it technically was. Through this trip, I began to more fully understand that we are a reflection of Jesus Christ to everyone around us. People look at us to see if we are smiling or if we look angry, if we are kind or rude to others, if we love our neighbor as ourselves. We don’t have to be on a mission ...

I visit New York City every January for business, and I always go to Times Square for the sights and sounds. I enjoy challenging myself to see the same person twice. On this night it was particularly cold so the typical crowds were sparse. No matter the weather there are always tourists being photographed and taking pictures. Several weeks earlier I had received my wide-angle lens, and could not imagine a better location to break it in. A flash is unnecessary for a nice digital SLR because of all the different types of lighting illuminating the area. I took this picture at the top of the red steps looking south toward famous New Year's ball. The combination of a great camera and solid lens made for a photo which did not need any post processing.

The Song That Silenced the Cappuccino Machine... It was chilly in Manhattan but warm inside the Starbucks shop on 51st Street and Broadway, just a skip up from Times Square . Early November weather in New York City holds only the slightest hint of the bitter chill of late December and January, but it's enough to send the masses crowding indoors to vie for available space and warmth. For a musician, it's the most lucrative Starbucks location in the world, I'm told, and consequently, the tips can be substantial if you play your tunes right. Apparently, we were striking all the right chords that night, because our basket was almost overflowing. It was a fun, low-pressure gig - I was playing keyboard and singing backup for my friend who also added rhythm with an arsenal of percussion instruments. We mostly did pop songs from the '40s to the '90s with a few original tunes thrown in. During our emotional rendition of the classic, "If You Don't Know Me by Now," I noticed a lady sitting in one of the lounge chair ...

Brilliant day and a half in New York City- Saw Times Square, wondered around beautiful Grand Central Station with a slice of pizza in my hand, had a yummy burger at Ruby Tuesdays, got a yellow cab, went to the top of the Rockefeller and saw the most fantastic views, strolled in the sun around Central Park for hours while eating a large pretzel, had a tasty Chinese in China Town, wondered around soho and Little Italy, got cheesecake near Madison square and finally walked up broadway past the Empire State Building! If you are planning a trip to New York City, I would highly suggest you staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square (790 8th Ave). It is 1 block off Times Square. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay a memorable one. They even left a little gift for Meggan's birthday. The price for a room is less than anywhere else I checked. Also, the Lion King is a must see if you are there. We loved NYC, but we are so thankful that we have a town like Monticello to come home to.

At Caroline's Comedy Club at Times Square, there's sadness along with the laughter tonight - upon word that David Brenner, who appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson more than 150 times, is dead. Brenner, whose jokes about everyday life situations, served as the inspiration for the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Richard Lewis, was 78. He died at home in New York City of cancer. Among those I interviewed at Caroline's, comedian Donnell Rawlings, who, while a great fan of his work, was more in awe of Brenner as a person, because he put his career on the back burner to be a good father.
In the last three days I took a megabus for the first time, learned how to navigate the New York City subway system, saw the sunset over the Hudson from the 25th floor drinking free beer, explored Park slope, prospect heights, got New York bagels, saw an improv show, got Venezuelan food, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, rode the Staten Island Ferry, walked through China Town, saw avenue q, saw Times Square, and spent not nearly enough time with my friends Kate and Aaron. Weekend well spent.

WHAT DO YOU HEAR? Author Unknown Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the Lord: look to the rock from which you were hewn, And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. – Isaiah 51:1 A Native American and his friend were in downtown New York City, walking near Times Square in Manhattan. It was during the noon lunch hour and the streets were filled with people. Cars were honking their horns, taxicabs were squealing around corners, sirens were wailing, and the sounds of the city were almost deafening. Suddenly, the Native American said, "I hear a cricket." His friend said, "What? You must be crazy. You couldn't possibly hear a cricket in all of this noise!" "No, I'm sure of it," the Native American said, "I heard a cricket." "That's crazy," said the friend. The Native American listened carefully for a moment, and then walked across the street to a big cement planter where some shrubs were growing. He looked into the bushes, beneath the branches, and sure enough, he located ...

Times Square in the snow during a winter storm - -
Did you know? Democrats in New York City, who outnumber Republican voters by more than six to one, had a bittersweet New Year. As the ball dropped in Times Square, the city’s last progressive talk radio station went silent, flipping its format to Spanish music and leaving liberal voices out in the cold in the nation’s top broadcast market. WWRL bade farewell to veteran hosts Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Alan Colmes, extending a coast-to-coast wave of progressive stations sinking in a sea of listener apathy— especially in big liberal cities. The same day, Clear Channel’s KTLK, the last liberal-dominated talk station in Los Angeles, the nation’s No 2 market, flipped Rhodes, Stephanie Miller, Bill Press, and David Cruz for conservative talkers Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity. The company’s KNEW in San Francisco did the same, booting liberal voices for more conservative ones. And talk stations here in Portland, Ore., and up north in Seattle, Wash., said goodbye to their ...
A four-year-old boy in New York City whose body was discovered in a Times Square apartment apparently had been starved and tortured, three weeks before his death. Myls Dobson, had burns and cuts on his entire body. During a hearing, prosecutors said that he had also been starved before his death. Dobson had been left in the care of a babysitter after his father was arrested in December. The babysitter, a 27-year-old woman identified as Kryzie King, has now been arraigned on assault and reckless endangerment charges. During her arraignment, prosecutors said that Dobson had been burned, beaten. He had been tortured for the three weeks while in King's care. According to further details, the boy had also been forced to stand on an apartment balcony in his underwear in near-zero temperatures. Also, Dobson had not been fed for the last two weeks of his life, and eventually all this torture and neglect led to his death. According to King's attorney, the investigation is still ongoing and till the time it is prov ...

Radio News, I’m Ross Simpson, Break out the Bengay! If you live in the Northeast or New England, you’re going to need some relief. There’ll be a lot of ache-y break-y backs after a day of shoveling snow. (sound of wind blowing) There’ll also be a lot of windburn in the aftermath of a Nor’easter that roared up the East Coast during the night, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places and dropping temperatures as well. New York City mayor, Bill DeBlasio says travel remains treacherous. - You know, even though the snow has ended, the travel conditions are obviously still very, very difficult. So, I wanna pick up where we were yesterday. I wanna say that the most important thing is that people should not be on the roads today if there’s any way they can help it. Even walking is difficult. Gloria Santolini slid her way across Times Square. - it’s fun… (laughing) I was sliding. I didn’t fall, thank god for that. so, I love it. thank you… It’s too cold even for the winter fe ...

RABBI'S New Year'S BULLETIN ARTICLE Holidays and Holy Days In all my years living in New York City, I never once thought of going to Times Square to celebrate New Years Eve. Perhaps it was the size of the crowd, perhaps it was the cold, or perhaps it was the fact that you had to get down to Times Square near the crack of dawn on December 31st in order to be present for the midnight ball drop on January 1st (and you couldn’t leave once you got there). Whatever the reason, the biggest party of the year did not seem like the right way to enter the New Year. That’s not to say that New Year’s Eve cannot be a fun night nor does it mean that Times Square isn’t a great experience for those who have made the journey. Ringing in a New Year with all of the hope and promise of wonderful and exciting new possibilities it contains should be a joyous moment. In many ways, it reflects the essence of our humanity, that we are imperfect creatures who need a new opportunity to become more perfect. We can always be b ...

There are many New Year’s celebrations and traditions celebrated world-wide. No matter what celebrations you choose, we hope your New Year is happy, healthy and prosperous! Here a just a few traditions: United States: Here in the U.S., (and in lots of other countries), the event is celebrated with fireworks and parades, carousing and toasts. Probably the most famous tradition in the United States is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, New York City, at 11:59 P.M. Thousands gather to watch the ball make its one-minute descent, arriving exactly at midnight. The tradition first began in 1907. The original ball was made of iron and wood; the current ball is made of Waterford Crystal, weighs 1,070 pounds, and is six feet in diameter. A traditional southern New Year's dish is Hoppin' John—black eyed peas and ham hocks. An old saying goes, "Eat peas on New Year's day to have plenty of everything the rest of the year." Other regions might enjoy pork and sauerkraut or shrimp as a way of ensuri . ...

Temperatures may struggle to climb out of the single digits around Chicago Monday. The air will be warmed slightly downwind of the Great Lakes, but even Detroit will have highs only in the teens. RealFeel® temperatures will be significantly lower than the actual temperature much of the time. The frigid air will settle into the Northeast during New Year's Eve through New Year's Day and into Thursday morning. Even though the extreme part of the cold air will stop short of the I-95 Northeast and central Appalachians, it will be dangerous to be outdoors for an extended period of time. Temperatures are forecast to plunge through the 20s for revelers on Times Square in New York City during New Year's Eve. RealFeel temperatures will dip well down into the teens by midnight, thanks to an unforgiving breeze that gets channeled through the streets. Similarly for spectators and participants in the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on New Year's Day, temperatures are forecast to be in the 20s with RealFeel temperatures ...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and Christmas in New York City provides a spectacular sight, with Christmas trees, department-store window displays and other holiday attractions popping up around the city. Spending the holidays in NYC is an experience unlike any other. Ice skating in Times Square, watching the snow glisten in Central Park, and viewing the winter wonderland displays in flagship stores along Fifth Avenue has made NYC a popular spot for celebrating Christmas. As the holiday approaches and last-minute shoppers stampede through malls to buy presents for everyone on their list, a new poll has shown that Christmas has lost its religious meaning for many Americans. Caroling, candlelight and church will be enjoyed by some Americans while others prefer last minute bargain hunting or trips to visit family. Christmas has largely lost its religious meaning and became an occasion focused on visiting family and friends and exchanging gifts. Clement, Boqueria, Manzanilla, Al Fiori, The Smith . ...

Gangsters & Grime Experience New York City's Darker Side When walking around New York City, most people often don't pay much attention to the city's darker side, blinded by the cool, cosmopolitan vibe. But beneath Gotham's glamour lurks a seedy past. Whether it was nefarious mob families running their empires from Little Italy or the vice ridden streets of 1970s era Times Square, the city's neighborhoods have witnessed a great deal of history. A modern day concrete jungle may conceal the sin and violence of yore, but after taking one of these walking tours you'll see the depravity that exists behind the present day facade. Five Points Considered to be one of America's first slums, the Five Points neighborhood in lower Manhattan borrows its moniker from the intersection of five downtown streets now part of modern day Chinatown the intersection of Five Points no longer exists as some of the streets have been replaced by Columbus Park and a federal courthouse. In the 19th century, Five Points was an immigran ...
Got back from the bus trip from New York City. My wallet got a little lighter after buying holiday gifts, met a lot of people on StreetPass that were mostly at Nintendo World, Times Square was very agoraphobic, and had a good time at the Jekyll and Hyde club & restaurant
Weekend so far: Wake up Friday to take Jessica Mazzeo Eastridge to a cardiologist appointment. Get to the car to see two suitcases and a card with my name on it. Open card and find out we're not going to a cardiologist but instead are going somewhere else. 2 hours later we're in New York City walking around Times Square on our way to see the New York Philharmonic perform Felix Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony! After getting lost on the subway we finally make our way back to the hotel room and go to sleep. Woke up this morning planning to go to Little Italy for food and then see Central Park. Instead I woke up with another card and two tickets to see Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss performed by The Metropolitan Opera. In row H too! Thank you Jessica, Ken Dillon, Rhoda Dillon, Joseph Mazzeo, and Janice Meyer Mazzeo for making this such a great weekend. It's not over yet either!
In an odd twist to a developing case an unarmed man involved in an altercation with New York City police near Times Square, which resulted in the shooting of two bystanders, the district attorney’s office is holding him responsible for their injuries.
I am (re)reading Factotum today. Charles Bukowski knows how to lay down a line. The bus station in New York City was near Times Square. I walked out into the street with my old suitcase. It was evening. The people swarmed up out of the subways. Like insects, faceless, mad, they rushed upon me, into and around me, with much intensity. They spun and pushed each other; they made horrible sounds. | I stood back in a doorway and finished the last pint. | Then I walked along, pushed, elbowed, until I saw a vacancy sign on Third Avenue. The manager was an old Jewish woman. "I need a room." I told her. | "You need a good suit, my boy." | "I'm broke." | "It's a good suit, almost for nothing. My husband runs the tailor shop across the street. Come with me." I like how his sentinces are simple. The brevity makes them easy to read. He has only one complex sentince in this selection. This is how I aspire to write. Simple. To the point. Easy to understand.

My faith in man kind has been restored! My daughter is a makeup artist who lives in NYC and works for MAC cosmetics and Sports Illustrated. She had a gig this morning with Toys R Us and had to take a taxi to be on site at 0415. With all her concerns she accidentally left her wallet in the back seat of the cab. I repeat, she left her wallet in a New York City taxi and and went on her business at work. Well sometime later she gets a phone call letting her know the whereabouts of her wallet. The taxi cab driver got her number from dispatch and drove all the way back out to Times Square to return the wallet to my daughter. Yes, a NEW York City TAXI CAB DRIVER DID THIS! I don't know this guy. Statistically I will never meet this guy but this act means the world to me. He is in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that God always watches over him on his duties as a NYC cab driver and protects him from harm. I hope God watches over his family. It is amazing that on Black Friday, this guy went out of his way to drive ...

Zach Braff sure knows how to photobomb. Photographer Sascha Reinking photographed a newlywed couple from Germany on vacation in New York City recently. Another day in New York City - my last one before heading back home to San Francisco tomorrow. I have loved being here this week. This morning I met Tim Tompkins for an early breakfast at Le Bonbonnierre. Tim is the president of the Times Square Alliance. I love him. Very dear to me. He explained what all the construction going on is about in Times Square. When it's finished it will be a curb-less stone piazza which has been designed by the Snohetta architectural firm. I'll keep the rest of what we talked about to myself. I do love how, shall we say, freewheeling my conversations always are with Tim. I then headed to a 10:30 meeting and saw so many old friends. At noon I met my new friend Tim Teeman and discussed his doing a profile on someone for my next issue. Tim, who worked at the Times of London for 15 years, has written a great new book on Gore Vidal and told me today at lunch that he has a long piece in tomorrow's New York Times in the Style section. It's about how Gore cut all of his fami ...

What do Zachary Quinto, Julianna Margulies and Peter Dinklage have in common? They were all spotted in New York City, within a 24 hour period, by the three of us (Adrian, Lise & Sian) while walking in the West Village, Soho and Times Square respectively. And no, funnily enough (even though it's Hallowe'en) they were not in costume... Come to think of it though, on the back of JM's expensive jacket's collar was a crest that said "The Good Wife". Does that count?
what a wonderful engagement photography session set! We took this esession around Central Park, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building and ends it at Times Square in manhattan, New York City!

Almost fully settled in Ohio. I gotta say, I'm missing the inspiring pretty lights of Broadway, Times Square, and the signature buildings of New York City. Kelador is doing an amazing job to lift me up my feet and caring for me. He took me out of a very bad situation with my stepfather. He has saved me in every way a girl can be saved. He is the best. While Ohio is my new home now, in my heart, I will always be a New Yorker.I miss you NY.

Well, I had to smile when I read a blog about our new billboard campaign to reach atheists. The writer stated: “As a trained communicator and former speech and debate coach, I can personally tell you that this is a rhetorical fail.” Then the person wrote a rather long blog about the billboards. So, has our campaign failed? No, not when a blogger writes several hundred words to counter it! Now, he may not be convinced that we have made a persuasive case with a few words on a billboard, but he has missed the whole point of the campaign. Let me note that the New York Times has even printed an article on our boards (one of the more fair articles about them), with a photo of the Times Square board. Of course, numerous atheist sites have posted blogs about the boards (which are located in New York City and the San Francisco Bay area, and soon in LA/Hollywood). This billboard campaign has really seen the atheist community talking about the boards. And that’s what we wanted. As a result, I had the larges .. ...
Todays is going to be one of those great days! I get to travel to fantastic New York City for a great four day vacation with my kids, Katie and Ian, and make some memories that will last a lifetime at the NY Comicon. We will be staying a block from Times Square. I so happy to be spending this special time with two wonderful kids. I get to meet a bunch of celebrities and be Walter White/Heisenberg without any of his consequences! If that were not enough I will at long last find out today what long lost Doctor Who episodes from the 1960's have been found in Africa. Does it get any better than this! Feeling privileged and blessed!

Friday Sep 27 2013, Late Night Jokes The Tonight Show with Jay Leno We are three days away from a government shutdown. And two days away from a total collapse if you’re a New York Giants fan. Speaking of 0 and 3 teams, to help boost attendance, the Jacksonville Jaguars are offering fans two free beers if they buy a ticket for this weekend's game. Two beers — is that going to be enough to help you forget you're rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars? O.J. Simpson was caught stealing cookies from the prison cafeteria. How far has O.J. fallen? Here's a guy who got away with murder and now he can't get even steal a couple of cookies. O.J. is huge. Even though he's in jail, he's still considered at large. The Beatles concluded their first U.S. concert tour with an unpaid benefit performance in support of the United Cerebral Palsy Fund of New York on September 20, 1964. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé opened for John, Paul George and Ringo at the society event, held at the Paramount Theater in New York City. As the Beatles performed in the Times Square theater for an audience of 3,600 people who had paid $100 per seat, 200 police officers managed to hold at bay 100,000 fans who had mobbed the streets outside the theater, hoping for a glimpse of the Fab Four.
Caught the train into New York City from Poughkeepsie this aft. Staying in Manhattan right across the street from Carnegie Hall. Walked down to Times Square tonight, what a zoo, standing room only on a Wednesday evening. Had a pretty decent burger and a beer at a bar a bit uptown, sustained possible permanent hearing damage from the din though.

Automats Mr. Joseph Horn and Mr. Frank Hardart launched their restaurant empire in 1888 in a tiny 15 stool lunchroom in central Philadelphia with $1,000 borrowed from a family member and a recipe for coffee. The restaurant was successful and before long the Horn and Hardart Baking Company operated several lunchrooms throughout Philly. In 1900 Mr. Hardart traveled to Berlin and visited the Quisiana Company Automat, a "waiterless restaurant." He was soon convinced the automat represented the food service wave of the future. It was simple, efficient and sanitary. Mr. Hardart ordered automat machinery for his company. In 1902, the very first Horn & Hardart automat opened at 1818 Chestnut St, Philadelphia. In 1912 the first H & H opened in New York City, smack in the middle of Times Square. Automat technology was patented by inventor John Fritsche and assigned to Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart. My Fave Slogan is "H5" - [HIP HIP HOORAY HISTORIC HILLSBOROUGH]!! Mayor Tom, you are fabulous ... and look at you ... even larger than life! From Vistchapelhill NC: "One of our favorite things about the Chapel Hill/Triangle area is the town of Hillsborough, a pre-revolutionary-war-era town, located in Orange County, near Durham and Research Triangle Park, off Old 86. Visit Hillsborough and see why the Times Square billboard, in New York City, recently heralded its Mayor and the town’s unique charm."
From SAINT MARY THE VIRGIN, NYC The ANGELUS Volume 15, Number 31 June 30, 2013 FROM THE RECTOR: SUMMER BEGINS It certainly feels like summer now in New York City. The heat and humidity have arrived and will be with us most days until October. There are many visitors in Times Square-and everywhere really. There's a lot of construction near the church on both 46th and 47th Streets. The city feels alive right now, not yet tired, lazy from the summer weather. We don't make many variations to the parish's pattern of worship during the summer except on Sundays when Morning and Evening Prayer are read, not sung. The servers and musicians have a break for Sunday Evensong & Benediction-and a member of the clergy isn't writing an Evensong sermon. Our regular schedule, with the parish choir singing at Sunday Solemn Mass, returns on the first Sunday in October and runs through whatever Sunday in the late spring is Corpus Christi. In July, the Episcopal Church celebrates three Holy Days: Independence Day on July 4 (it ...
