I have just returned from New York City, where I spent spring break visiting with fellow-organist friends and attending a series of excellent organ recitals. One highlight was a superb concert at Christ and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, near Lincoln Center, performed by students of Paul Jacobs, who showcased the organ as an accompanying/chamber music instrument, together with violin, trumpet, cello and others. Impressive performances by the Artemis String Quartet and the avant-garde Kronos Quartet at legendary Carnegie Hall rounded off the experience. I also got to try out the delicately beautiful Fritts organ at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the brand new magnificent Schoenstein instrument at Fordham University, in the Bronx. And I saw the small but insightful exhibition of Nazi "Degenerate Art" at the Neue Galerie, the German/Austrian art museum *** stylish Viennese coffee house near the Metropolitan Museum. He was soon moved to Harlem, as the African American population there grew. He would later become the first African American police sergeant (1926), lieutenant (1935), and the first African American parole commissioner (1941).

This would be so awesome for us here in NYC He's got my vote The Brooklyn megachurch pastor who’s seriously considering a run for mayor concedes that he’s currently a Long Island resident, but says he’ll be living in New York City by next month. “I’ve lived in Smithtown for family reasons. My kids are out there. But regardless of this race, my wife and I are already planning to move back into the city after more than 10 years,” A.R. Bernard, pastor of the 37,000-member Christian Cultural Center in East New York, told the Daily News on Saturday. Bernard, a registered Republican who first publicly confirmed his interest in a possible 2013 bid in an interview with The News on Thursday, says he and his wife should soon be settled in Manhattan — possibly somewhere near Lincoln Center. “If someone wants to make an issue of it they can. It’s not going to go anywhere because I’ve grown up in the city, been planted in the city — my ministry and all my work has been in the city,” said Bernar ...

Jackie and I just got home from my first ever trip to New York City! We really enjoyed the visit. I went for a Feldenkrais Method workshop on Pelvic Health and Awareness, which was a fantastic class. Everybody can use this information. Jackie visited with her childhood friend that lives in NJ. We went to dinner with my nephew and his wife, Brian & Sharon, at a really nice restaurant called The Robert. It sits at the top of the Museum of Arts and Design. The view from there looks out onto Columbus Circle, Central Park, and Lincoln Center. We went to see the Broadway play Wicked, which was fantastic. One of the best things was that we found a nice little apartment, through airbnb.com, that was just seven blocks from my class. So, I got to walk to and from class each day and experience the feel of really living in New York. To tell the truth, before I went I didn't have a very high opinion of The City; but, I really liked it. I don't think I would want to live there, but, I sure do enjoy visiting. I plan to ...

So many thanks to the Metropolitan Opera for presenting free outdoor opera screenings on the huge open plaza in Lincoln Center. There will be 10 films in 10 days and I have seen the first two. Beautiful evening under the sky, seated with what must have been hundreds (thousands?) of opera lovers in rapt silence as the sounds of "The Enchanted Island" and "Don Giovanni" floated over the night air. Wish I could send these magical hours out to all you not in New York City.

I was doing some bookings from sax player David Sanborn and had him opening for Boz Scaggs At Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center on July 13, 1977. He had just finished his set when I left the building and started to walk back to my hotel (The Warwick at Eighth Avenue and 56th Street). Suddenly (and I mean 'instantly') the whole world went black. A few emergency lights came on but the entire New York City area lost electricity. I got to the hotel and walked up to my third floor room. My basic memory is that the air conditioner was dead and I could hear police sirens and car horns all night long. I looked out the window and every intersection was gridlocked. I have been in a few other situations when the power went off but New York City is a very scary place when it happens . . .

New York City, at Lincoln Center came and went this past weekend. I was there for the 25th Annual conference for the American Society for the Alexander Technique...AmSAT. It was a fine conference and I have come home energized with some great new ideas and a couple of new friends. I will post a photo of the view from my dorm room at Julliard later. It was terrific, looking out from the heights (the 19th floor,) and taking pictures of the view. For an ex-New Yorker, I am really a country hick when I am down there. But...It was so sweet to return and jump into my beloved Balkan Folk Dance even before I reached home!
