What a hoot singing a few songs at the legendary Bitter End in Greenwich Village, New York City last Monday. Richie Cannata (Billy Joel Sax) hosts a jam every Monday night 11:30 that goes into Tuesday morning. What a thrill playing with him and a stellar bunch of players from the Big Apple. No guitar needed! (Which was kind of fun in it's own right-what to do with my hands?!) My songs were "Before You Accuse Me" ~ Eric Clapton; "Drift Away" ~ Dobie Gray; "I Can't Tell You Why" ~ Eagles. Thanks to my friend Jacki for capturing the night in some photos.

The People’s Climate March: What You Need to Know September 12, 2014 by Ari Phillips submit to reddit 429 (Poster:"Winds of Change" by James Jean) A version of this post first appeared at ThinkProgress. For one week in late September, New York City will be the center of gravity in the fight to confront climate change. On Sunday, Sept. 21, a Climate March through Midtown Manhattan will kick off a week of high-profile climate events in the Big Apple. Promoted as an effort to bring unprecedented attention to climate change, the gathering comes just as international climate negotiations ramp up in a major push toward a new global accord. The People’s Climate March, being called the “largest Climate March in history” by organizers, will potentially draw over a hundred thousand people to walk through Manhattan and show a level of demand for action not seen since the era of Civil Rights marches and anti-Vietnam protests. The day after the march, a United Nations summit on the climate crisis will bring to ...
Curious about why New York City is called the Big Apple? A common question about New York City, we explore the origin of New York City's nickname in this article.
I awakened earlier than normal Sunday morning, but instead of turning over and going back to sleep I turned on the tube. An episode of Saturday Night Live was playing --- you know, the comedy series televised "Live" in front of an audience in New York City. The fact that the show was broadcast live made it much more exciting, like, would you actually see Steve Martin or Robin Williams or flub a line? Over the years the cast changed over and over again, but for one five year span there was a quartet of actors who, I thought, were the best they ever had. I stayed up late many a night just to watch them. Anyway, every week a guest star opened the show by performing a monologue in front of bright lights and a very excited audience. It was like a ticker-tape parade. --- The atmosphere was Electric --- This is the Big Apple, we're Live, full of energy and going to entertain the *** out of you! They'd roll out on stage all full of bluster, exuding energy, waving their arms like windmills, talking about how grea ...

CULTURESEEN4U.COM It is 1950’s New York. Not just New York – but the very shady side of town, where private detectives, hookers, and beautiful blond dames hang out. Cloak and Dagger is celebrating its World Premiere at Signature Theatre in Shirlington. Artistic Director, Eric Schaeffer put together a dynamic cast of 4 that takes us back to the mid 20th century New York City even before it was the Big Apple. Nick Cutter (Doug Carpenter) is a third rate private eye who has no luck with business but finds himself embroiled in a tangled web with a beautiful blond bombshell named Helena Troy (Erin Driscoll). Helena entices Nick to help her find the Golden Venus. The zaniness begins with their meeting and doesn’t stop for the full 90 minutes of the show. Two other actors, Ed Dixon and Christopher Bloch, portray about 20 other characters and are simply wonderful to watch. They are hookers, old ladies, mobsters, and managers. Each role is done with verve and swagger. The music is pure Film Noir and ...

Say the words “Big Apple,” and most people think of one thing only: New York City. But folks in Jackson, Mississippi might interpret that name in an entirely different way.
It’s a sad reality all over the country: thousands of healthy and treatable animals are being euthanized in shelters each day for lack of resources, including space, funding for medical care and too few adopters. Since 2003, Animal Care and Control of New York City has been working alongside the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’S Animals to transform the Big Apple into a no-kill community by 2015. As part of that effort, AC&C will join animal shelters across the nation for “Just One Day” on Wednesday.

Recently elected Mayor Bill De Blasio of New York City being interviewed by Charlie Rose. He is the first Democrat to hold the office in 20 years, winning with 73% of the vote. He is unabashedly Liberal and considers reducing the inequality gap his priority. He is very articulate, extremely self assured and believes government has a much needed role to play. He claims New York has 8.4 million citizens which means he has a larger constituency than the Governor of many states, including South Carolina. Everyone talks about Governors being excellent Presidential candidates because of their hands on experience administrating. That being true, then after demonstrating leadership in the "Big Apple" he should be seen as a serious Presidential candidate going forward by Progressives.

Fifty years ago this week the World's Fair opened in New York City. A few weeks later I was on one of the buses full of classmates, all primed for our senior trip, as we pulled out of the school parking lot headed for the Big Apple. Soon after checking into the Henry Hudson Hotel some details became sketchy and a few will go with me to my grave. Long before Las Vegas began using their popular tag line, which they stole from the Class of '65, my classmates vowed that what ever happened in New York would stay in New York. I had never been that far from home and the entire trip was outstanding. My first two trips to the fair, which was actually located in Queens, was to visit every pavilion and view each exhibit. Subsequent trips were solely for the Belgian waffles that were covered with fresh whipped cream, powdered sugar and sliced strawberries. They sold 2,500 a day and were inhaled like a prisoner's last meal on death row. My most memorable exhibit was Michelangelo's Pieta on display in the Vatican Pavi ...

Saint Peter was manning the Pearly Gates when forty people from New York City showed up. All of the New Yorkers are gone?" asked God. "No!" replied Saint Peter. "The Pearly Gates!"

Beard envy? Surgery may help you get the scruffy Take a look at Hollywood’s leading men, the White House press secretary and the hipsters strolling through Brooklyn. It’s obvious beards are in, and the inability to grow thick warm fuzz can leave some men feeling left out in the cold. At least, that’s how it would seem from the reported uptick in facial hair transplants. “Whether they’re filling in a few gaps or doing a complete beard construction, New York City doctors who specialize in the procedure said they’re seeing a growing number of men paying as much as $7,000 to pump up their beards,” wrote Serena Solomon, who first reported on the trend on the neighborhood news site DNAinfo New York. But fear not, face-bald hipster men — you don’t have to live in the Big Apple to be able to sport a big beard. In Portland, Oregon — host of the 2014 World Beard and Moustache Championship — Dr. Steven Gabel can help you get the right mustache to savor sips of craft beer and artisan coffee. “ ...

I have always dreamed of visiting New York City. I constantly pester poor Micah about it, since he has been there quite a few times. He fills my head with stories of sidewalks, taxis and buildings that touch the sky. The idea of a city, a forest of sky scrapers and canyons of concrete- fascinates my (98%-wilderness, 0.5% Carson City, 1.5% Mule Days) perception of reality. Well, God has a wonderful sense of humor. I am finally going to New York! Dad and I will be flying to the Big Apple (why do they even call it that- I'll have to ask Micah) on February 4th. I have been invited to appear on the Katie Couric show, which will air on February 7th. What a huge surprise, and what a glorious opportunity to share the Eastern Sierra! I am so excited, and moved to tears. I love you all so much, and I am honored to continue representing the area we love. Yee-haw!

But alas for poor, Calbraith Perry Rodgers, dashing and daring-do pilot of the first transcontinental aircraft trip, is hardly a household name. Phineas Fogg went ‘round the world in 80 days and intrepid girl reporter Nellie Bly beat that time for real. Back in 1903 Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, a companion, and pit bull named Pud, had driven from San Francisco to New York City in 63 days, a feat seldom duplicated since then due to the terrible conditions of American roads and their failure to connect for any sensible route. And you could buy tickets in the Big Apple and with good connections in Chicago be in L.A. in about four and a half days. In 1911, only seven years after the Wright Brothers first took off in 1903 Rodgers completed the coast-to-coast trip in 90 days.
Kendall Jenner Spends Time With Harry Styles Backstage at SNL Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles continue to keep us guessing about their relationship status. The 18-year-old E! star spent time with the One Direction hottie backstage while he performed with his group on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 7. A source reveals to E! News that even though the brunette beauty was behind the scenes with the pop star, they did not attend the after party. Host Paul Rudd, Chris Rock and Steve Carell celebrated at the bash, which was held at the BBQ restaurant Hill Country. The friendly pair was spotted earlier in the day out and about in New York City, leaving the Gansevoort hotel. Jenner, who sported a green jacket, white sweater and skinny jeans, tried to keep a low profile with the British singer, but that proved to be a difficult feat when fans swarmed them as they tried to get a bite to eat. A source tells E! News exclusively that Jenner arrived in the Big Apple for a meeting on Friday, Dec. 5. and added that she and S ...

10 most expensive restaurants in the world Fine dining at Michelin-starred restaurants around the world can come at a price. But what you get for those high price tags (which can often be accompanied by sticker shock) are outstanding dining experiences that can take you to a castle in Switzerland or to an underwater culinary experience in the Maldives. From Japan to Europe to the Big Apple, luxe dining menus are often designed tasting coursespaired with wines, which substantially adds to the consumer's bottom line. Japanese restaurants all over the world often charge premium prices for lavish seafood experiences. Masa in New York City, for example, costs $450 per person before beverages, gratuity or tax, all of which can easily take the bill up to roughly $600 per person for its tasting experience. And be sure not to cancel a reservation at Masa — that, too, will cost you (close to $200 per person). For a Japanese all-beef tour that costs a pretty penny, choose Aragawa in Tokyo. 10 Worst Cities to Visit in the United States by Stuart Smith on Jun 24, 2013. Travelers planning to visit the United States have many exciting destinations to choose from. However, for as many historical landmarks, amazing nightlife scenes, and striking landscapes there are to take in—oftentimes that also means major urban centers can have their share of crime, poverty, and traffic dangers, which have earned the following American cities a bad rap that are not really justified. For example, New York City is celebrated by some tourists for its Big Apple hustle and bustle; while others steer clear due to fear of crime rates, smog, and traffic. You have to understand that in many cases these bad raps are due to outdated information or stories of unfortunate events that happened to a friend who visited the city. While we urge you to travel with caution, let’s explore why these cities have a bad rap for being the ten worst cities in the United States… 1. Detroit, Michigan Detroit probably has the worst ...

NYC marathon makes welcome return 01 November By SAPA New York City – The New York City Marathon returns to the streets of the Big Apple on Sunday, a year after Hurricane Sandy forced organisers to reluctantly cancel the race. The New York Road Runners Club came in for criticism last year as they pressed ahead with plans for the race in the face of widespread devastation. Nearly 100 people died amid the flooding and property damage wreaked by Sandy, much of the damage located on Staten Island, where runners would have made the traditional start to the 42.2km event that winds through all five boroughs of New York. When race and city officials finally realised on the Friday before the race that they just couldn't go on, New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg called it a “crushing” decision. Organisers hope the 2013 edition can help the marathon again be seen as a unifying force in the city. The quality of the elite fields promises every chance of a sparkling race. The men's field is headlined ...

New York City, the Big Apple, is the ultimate travel destination to which you must go at least once in your lifetime.
New York City. Here for the weekend. I was born in Manhattan and moved to the Bronx when i was a year old. Stayed here until i moved to Cali in 1999. Now ive been back a dozen years living in a nearby rural farm area. So when i get to spend real time in the city like i am now. i'm frequently jarred and perplexed. Is this the greatest city in the world? Who knows. Its certainly unique and overwhelming and never ceases to surprise. Millionaires walking past homeless crazies both apparantly cannot see eachother. Paranoid looks, no eye contact, then spomtaneous / hilarious conversations. Who can figure this place out. Dont get me started on the Saturday morning aromas in *** kitchen. Ive settled in on NYC being the grandest, most diverse, dynamic, interesting, craziest, paranoid, and fun filled urban dive bar / museum that ive ever been to. And it will always be home. Proud? Whatever. Its just this simple: im a New Yorker. I wont say "so kiss my *** as im way mature! :) go Big Apple and lets go Rangers!
NOTE TO MY NAVY SEAL FRIENDS: The Gentleman in the Center was the Secretary of the Navy who attended the 50th Anniversary Celebration of our Victory in World War II in the Big Apple. James Earl Jones was the MC. .The Sec Nav was so impressed with the Job that the VIP Dignitary Protection Team did that he insisted that this Photo be taken. I (far right) was the only Member of the Team representing "Red Sox NATION'. Took a lot of good natured abuse and ribbing. Many of those that were there would dissappear from the face of the earth a few years later as they charged towards danger on 9-11. Never more proud to have served in New York City. To my Brothers in Blue and Red, you are not forgotten.

When it comes to buying and selling property in New York City, money talks -- just ask AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams. The 63-year-old rocker apparently made a nice profit recently when he sold a modest-sized condominium he owned in the Big Apple. According to the Corcoran Group Real Estate's website, the two-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot apartment was purchased for $2.3 million, while PropertyObserver.com.au reports that the 63-year-old rocker laid out $1.25 million for the condo back in July of 2004. Located in the West Village section of the city, the renovated digs feature a pair of private terraces and ornate wood trellises, as well as a custom-designed kitchen boasting granite countertops and a bar area. There are also two bathrooms, one of which has a marble-tile floor, a marble sink and a large whirlpool bathtub. AC/DC has been on hiatus since wrapping up their world tour in support of their 2008 studio effort, Black Ice. In an interview with BackstageAxxess.com this past March, Williams revealed t ...
The First Baptist Church of Cleveland, Tenn. choir is in New York City to perform - and I had the chance to have dinner with dear friends - Arnold and Vicki Botts, along with choir director Tyler Brinson and Jim Burleson. Arnold was rightfully shocked that Del Frisco's did not serve sweet tea. I know - my fellow Southerners -- it's a shock to your system. And after we prayed over our meal, the young lady serving us asked about our religious affiliation. She was looking for a church home and we were able to suggest some nearby evangelical Christian congregations. A great night of southern fellowship in the heart of the Big Apple!
[NEW RELEASE] NEW BALANCE ALL-STAR BASEBALL PACK - New Balance is well pumped for the MLB All-Star Game, putting together this special double pack. Hi everyone! We are her in New York City! We arrived this afternoon, had a tour of the Ronald Mcdonald house, went to the store and ate some dinner (an all organic meal...a 1st for us! And was delicious too!) our flight was delayed and kind of bumpy...it is raining here. The Ronald house is very nice...and thus far everything has been nice.the ride here was a little wild...but I think is considered "normal" driving around here! We meet with the surgeon tomorrow at 9 and then will be doing "hospital stuff" (my newest hobby:). We are going to meet with my dad's cousin (my 2nd cousin)in the afternoon who is going to show us around. It will be nice to be with someone who knows the lay of this crazy land! I got a LOT of texts today.so sorry if I didn't answer! All is well and I will keep everyone informed after we meet with the doctors! Have a great week! Love from the Big Apple! (By the way, Brian is still alive and well here, we are both a little overwhelmed. We will both adjust to this crazy place...i ...
This time tomorrow I will be in the Big Apple! I can't wait--love New York City!!! Hope to see a bunch of you at Wizard World over the weekend!!
Thank you for the birthday wishes :) Two years ago on this day I was rehearsing for my first New York City show, American Mud (such a powerful show!), I was a steady-working-on-the-beat artist, doing photo shoots, camera/stage time, as an actress and poet. Simply loving and basking in every minute of it. Completing my dream of making a movie the promotes Philly, A Love Letter to You, which premiered in the Lower East Side, and has traveled from the East Coast to the West Coast and even hooped the pond to London. I closed my seven years of being a teaching artist and sharing my crafts with youth all over Philadelphia with pride, creating artist in all corners of the city. One year ago I said yes to the love of my life as he put a precious diamond on my finger in my favorite sanctuary nestled between the trees. This brilliant, handsome, sexy, artist then swept me away to the Big Apple for the biggest challenge of my life at that point, living with a man. Through the ups and downs of our first year together ...
'Bloomberg Wants Mandatory Food Composting in New York City': For related articles and more information, please visit OCA’s Toxic Sludge & Organic Compost page, Organic Transitions page and our New York News page. If you are what you eat, residents of the Big Apple might want get themselves in order. No, there’s not a new obesity epidemic in New York: Mayor Bloomberg wants to fine residents who don’t sort their leftover food from the rest of the trash. Banning oversized soda is so last year, apparently. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Monday that he’s hoping his city will adopt a mandatory composting plan that will require New Yorkers to separate food waste from their garbage. According to the New York Times, Bloomberg plans to get the operation started before his final term as mayor expires later this year, and plans to have a mandatory composting program in place by 2016. If the endeavor gets off the ground, all 8 million residents of the most populated city in the United States will have t ...
For metalheads who thought bands like W.A.S.P. and Mötley Crüe just weren't menacing or heavy enough, White Zombie was the perfect antidote for a period of time during the mid- to late '90s, as they fused B-horror movie visuals and subject matter with heavy music and growled vocals. And while White Zombie was originally thought to be a full-fledged band, it would later become known that the group was almost entirely the vision of their larger-than-life singer, Rob Zombie. Hence, the White Zombie story begins with good ol' Rob (who was then known as Rob Cummings), shortly after he relocated from his hometown of Haverhill MA, to New York City during the early '80s. Although he had long admired such theatrical metallists as Kiss and Alice Cooper (as well as such punk outfits as the Ramones), Rob wasn't quick to form a group in the Big Apple; instead he worked as a production assistant on the TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse and did art design for magazines. By 1985 however, Rob opted to pursue a career in music ...

New York’s “Safe Gun Act” hasn’t really done much to stop crimes committed with guns. It may have stopped law-abiding citizens from being able to respond to life-threatening attacks with their own guns, of course. Like most Democrat-controlled, big cities, New York City has one of the most stringent gun-control schemes in America. But this heavy emphasis on banning guns has not stopped a recent rise in murders in the Big Apple. Over a 48 hour period between June 11 to June 13 25 people were killed with firearms in New York. Victims were from all over the city. In fact, the only part of the city that didn’t experience a shooting over the 48-hour period was Staten Island! Eight were shot in the Bronx, four in Queens, one in Manhattan, and a whopping twelve in Brooklyn. The fellow killed in Manhattan was shot during the day amongst a crowd of people.
Wednesday was the opening night of New York City's popular Dyckman streetball league, and the Knicks' Sixth Man Award winner J.R. Smith was in attendance. [+] Enlarge Sharon BondJ.R. Smith and his brother Chris took in some Big Apple hoops with Sharon Bond, Dyckman's VP of marketing and media. Smith and his younger brother Chris watched from courtside as another standout player from the New York area took the court. That was Brooklyn's finest and New York State's all-time leading scorer in high school basketball -- Lance Stephenson, who now plays for the Indiana Pacers. After taking in a few minutes of the headline game, he suited up midway through the first half and showcased his full-court speed with the ball. Stephenson, whose streetball nickname is "Born Ready," had a few nice breakaway layups. But the crowd of around 1,000 didn't go wild until former New Jersey Net Sundiata Gaines, who's from Queens, showed Stephenson up on back-to-back 3-pointers. Fans started rushing the court, and the game had to ...

New York's Mayor Bloomberg has been at the forefront of the attack on our gun rights. He sinks millions of dollars in his efforts to brainwash the American people into thinking guns are evil. His gun control policies continue to fail and recent failures show more of the same. Six dead and more than two dozen shootings recently in New York City is a sign that Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun agenda - which he hopes to spread across the nation with his big bucks campaigns to buy away the gun rights of American citizens - is beginning to fail. Michael Bloomberg wants to use his wealth to buy Big Apple gun control all over the country. Despite reports that New York City violence is actually down from last year, over the weekend, that city accounted for half of the slayings that Seattle has seen so far for the entire first five months of the year. Before Bloomberg spends another million dollars trying to spread his program of gun prohibition, the mayor ought to concentrate on his own turf and leave the rest ...

Joe Walsh’s time in New Jersey was short—only four years—but the rock guitarist, a longtime member of the Eagles, recalls his Garden State stay as “one of my favorite parts of my life.” Walsh, a native of Ohio, moved to New Jersey at 14. His family lived briefly in New York City, but when Walsh’s parents decided to get their kids out of the teeming Big Apple, they packed up and moved to Montclair. Now 64, Walsh smiles as he stretches out on a sofa in the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Beverly Hills and recounts his years at Montclair High School. He may be 3,000 miles away and 50 years down the road, but mentally he’s walking along Bloomfield Avenue, where he still likes to stroll when he visits. “That’s where the White Castle was,” he remembers. The guitarist’s ties to New Jersey remain strong. He returns for high school reunions, and even to play in the high school’s Grid Iron Club golf tournament in June, as well as to visit his brothers, one of whom lives in Clifton, the other in Nu ...
The NFL may be getting too greedy -- Ann By Matt Calkins For now, it’s the National Football League, but it’s fixing to become the National Football Empire. Roger Goodell is hoping to upgrade his title from Commissioner to King, and the 32 teams he oversees will be known as his legions. Hank Williams Jr. once asked if you were ready for some football, but that question was clearly rhetorical. This one, however, is genuine: Are you ready for this much football? Citing a booked Radio City Music Hall as his reason, Goodell is moving the 2014 NFL Draft to mid-May and plans to keep it there for the foreseeable future. The iconic New York City venue will be hosting an Easter event when the draft typically takes place — which, for the commish, is a springtime Christmas gift. There are a multitude of other Big Apple sites suitable for the draft, but the NFL was looking for any justification to push it back. Apparently, headlines are the league’s drug, and it couldn’t handle three weeks of withdrawals. . ...

The Indian Point nuclear power plant sits on the eastern shore of the Hudson River 35 miles north of New York City. On October 15, a three-judge panel hears evidence on whether the plant should operate for another 20 years. At issue is Indian Point’s ability to handle the challenges of aging, as well as its cost estimates for dealing with a meltdown. But what's really at stake is whether nuclear power has a future near the Big Apple. The two operating reactors on the site produce roughly 17,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year. A new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council argues that this electricity could be replaced nearly for free. In fact, the report argues, New York State is already building a new transmission line that will bring in enough power to replace a quarter of the nuclear-generated electricity. But analyses by plant owner Entergy suggest the changeover would come with a hefty bill. All parties agree that a shutdown would see an increased role for natural gas—meaning mo ...

Quote / Unquote (The End of the World as We Know It edition): "If you use all the physics that we know now, and we do what we think is a straightforward calculation, it's bad news. It may be that the universe we live in is inherently unstable. At some point ... it's all going to be wiped out ... The universe wants to be in a different state, so eventually to realize that, a little bubble of what you might think of as an alternate universe will appear somewhere, and it will spread out and destroy us."—Joseph Lykken, theoretical physicist, Fermilab. Cosmic Log, NBCNews.com, 2/18/12. "The Real Housewives of New York City star [Kelly Bensimon] today showed no signs of growing up as she was spotted out in the Big Apple today blowing bubbles. The 44-year-old mother of two was dressed elegantly in a low-cut black dress with pretty pale blue scallop hemming. But the reality TV personality did little to add to her style as she chewed gum and blew bubbles in front of the camera."—Daily Mail Online, 9/17/12.

Filled with parks, restaurants, shops, outdoor cafes and cultural institutions as good as any in the world, it’s no wonder the Big Apple continues to draw so many young single people from around the globe. Education, family-oriented factors and price were not heavy factors, although affordability was considered. Here are 10 of the top city neighborhoods where singles will feel most at home, surrounded by the things that make New York City great for them. 1. Green guide: Best places in the Big Apple for eco-friendly living New York City has never been considered one of the greenest cities, but we’re getting there. We have less pollution than Los Angeles or Beijing; now the Big Apple has begun in the past few years to improve its air quality and pollution levels. A Parks Department initiative spearheaded by Mayor Bloomberg promises public greenspace within 10 minutes of every New Yorker's front door. A controversial Dapartment of Transportation initiative has increased the number of bike lanes borough-wide. The environmental impact of these political moves may not be felt for years, but both well help New Yorkers breathe easier. With the bustling, car-filled streets of Manhattan among the city's most polluted areas, green-seekers should head to the outer boroughs, where suburban-like neighborhoods put green-living first and have plenty of park space and less air pollution. Not surprisingly, Staten Island, with beaches, parks and backyards, has more eco-frien ...
From Talkers.com... NY Post Reports CBS Radio New York Weighing WFAN-AM/FM Options. The New York Post’s Phil Mushnick writes that the brass at CBS Radio in New York City is weighing its programming options for the sports talk tandem of WFAN-AM and FM as the company must be eager to get the fledgling CBS Sports Radio Network programming on in the largest market in the country. Currently, the full schedule of WFAN programming is heard on both signals but the need to get the new national network some Big Apple exposure is pressing. A statement from the company to the Post goes, “We have a number of great options and are closely examining each one.” At issue is the fact that WFAN-AM’s 660 signal is huge and the 101.9 FM signal is decent but nowhere near as far-reaching as 660 AM. Will the local sports talk remain on 660 AM and the national network appear on 101.9 FM? Will it be the other way around or a mixture of the two? As Muchnick hints, you can bet some of the WFAN stalwarts – including ...

Have you ever been to New York City? Did you stroll down Park Avenue? What do you remember most about the Big Apple?
Harry Styles reportedly bought Taylor Swift an emerald bracelet to celebrate the New Year. The One Direction hunk and the American singer have been dating for several months and it's thought their romance is getting serious. They saw in 2013 in New York City together, with Harry buying Taylor the jewellery as a surprise to make the occasion even more special. Harry handpicked the present for Taylor while he was back home [in the UK]," an insider told British newspaper The Sun. "He found it in a second-hand shop and she was impressed when he handed it to her. He gave it to her at the plush hotel they stayed in while they were celebrating New Year in New York. “Harry is head over heels for Taylor and even admitted he loves her while they were in the Big Apple." The two stars were first linked earlier last year and then reunited after Taylor's split from Conor Kennedy. It's thought the couple are spending as much time as possible together at the moment as One Direction have a busy year ahead of them. They ...
Big Apple Turns Green - Local looney Tom Green does Manhattan - and MTV By Shannon Hawkins in New York Ottawa Sun - Sunday, January 31, 1999 Smothered in shaving cream and lying spread-eagle on the boardroom table at MTV's L.A. offices, Tom Green made a lasting impression on network executives last November. One that found his self-titled show a new home in their funky New York City studios. From the second-floor MTV studio windows that overlook Times Square, the glare of lights shining off the elaborate billboards create an atmosphere of energy and excitement. But for the irreverent, borderline lunatic Green, the shine of New York fades at the thought of Ottawa. "I'm homesick," confesses the 27-year-old renegade jokester. It's hard to imagine that Green, who for the past four years longed for a major network deal, could feel the pangs of loneliness when faced with relocation to the Big Apple. The same guy who plunked a cow's head on his parents bed in their suburban home at 3 a.m.; the same one who mixed ...

Tip: New Yorkers are so nice...and so is Russell Crowe! Several months ago I made all the arrangements to take my wife, April, to New York for Christmas this year.A business trip had taken me there at Christmas time years ago and I knew how spectacular it was with all of the beautiful decorations. She had not seen it decorated that way and I wanted her to experience the "Big Apple" in style. We went to Radio City Music Hall and saw the Rockettes' Christmas program. That was simply spectacular to say the least. We also went to see Phantom of the Opera. It is one of the longest running and most proclaimed shows on Broadway and we were not disappointed. It was a wonderful weekend for us both! Most people in New York City either walk or travel by mass transit or by cab.We had not rented a car, so we joined the crowds and took the subway everywhere we went.Since we were not all that familiar with the city, we got lost several times, but we discovered that New Yorkers are some of the nicest, most friendly people you ...

We have a mid-week show on Wednesday, Dec. 12 when the big, bad Popa Chubby (a/k/a Ted Horowitz) brings his Bronx Blues to the BBC. This will be a single 90 minute set of hard chargin', non-stop guitar pyrotechnics from the big guy from the Big Apple who muscles his guitar like no other. Chicago is a long way from the Bronx-- about as far as Popa's style of blues is from the traditional Chicago style of electric blues. But we've all heard where blues axemen such as Albert Collins and Buddy Guy have taken the blues and Popa just adds some Big Apple attitude, dusting it with biting social commentary and blue-collar sentiment. Make no mistake-this is contemporary funky urban blues with a powerhouse stage performance. He's no stranger to the blues scene-Popa's been a blues rock mainstay in New York City, he's released about 30 cd's, and is currently on the Blind Pig label. This is Popa's second appearance on the corner stage and my ears are still ringing from the first show six years ago. This show is not for ...

Kim and I have a long standing disdain for driving throug West Virginia. Its crazy up and downs and unending S curves are dizzying and unkind to the stomach. This week, for Kim's 40th birthday, we fulfilled a lifelong dream I'd hers by visiting New York City. Holiday parades, bright lights and millions of people. Glitz and Glamour to the Max. Behind the Vogue, however is a slightly more dark undertone. Driving in the city is insanity! The buses literally aim for you. The local drivers announce there presence with a serenade of horn honking and the cab drivers navigate as if they each have a Big Apple stuck up their butt which they are hopelessly trying to pass. Throw in 12 million pedestrians, which you half wonder if its acceptable to run over, considering you cannot move otherwise, and its Maximum Overdrive meets Night Of The Living Dead. Don't get me wrong, we will certainly go back, if only for the M&M and Hershey Stores, but for now, I am perfectly happy to be once again traveling in the West Virgi . ...

Today is November 10, the only time it will be for an entire year, and on this day I am thankful to New York City. I am begrudgingly able to forgive them for making the Deuce family friendly before I ever got to visit, because the Big Apple has always displayed a willingness to host menacing visitors such King Kong, Godzilla, the Staypuft Marshmallow man, *** dirty apes, Quetzalcoatl, Jason Voorhees, sewer alligators, Native American Wolfen spirits, Fulcian zombies and rippers, David Hess, Frank Zito, Patrick Bateman, one of Argento's three mothers, Frankenhookers, the Gremlins, The Warriors, Rosemary's baby and the Castevets, Snake Plissken, Shredder and the Foot Clan, Tim Tebow, all of the Marvel Comics super-villains, and many other troubling entities that are too numerous to name, so that no other city would have to deal with any threats. I still hate your Yankees, but you’re alright NYC.

At the digital kitchen table, today's hot topic is the chilly reception that Guy Fieri's new restaurant in New York City is receiving from celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, along with a lot of Big Apple food media. Plus we've got two soup recipes to warm up a chilly October evening.
So...New York City is treating Bonita and I so well. went for a walk to Times Square and ran into two good acquaintances from Spencer, IA...THEN happened to run into (almost literally!) Yoko Ono at the Imagine Circle in Strawberry Fields, Central Park. Way bizarre... But perhaps the best was being treated to an awesome night at my concert in Brooklyn with a great crowd and venue owner...ALSO given a ride both to and there by strangers for FREE...and then late night rambling brought me a free sandwich (not by my asking!) by a man with a thick NY accent wishing us well. Man...Whoever doubted the New Yorker's good heart is seriously mistaken. I love the Big Apple.

Here's my letter re 9-11 printed today in the Dallas Morning News: On this, the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, my mind wanders back to an early visit this summer to New York City, when, approaching Lower Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry and taking in the million-dollar view of the Big Apple, I was heartened by the sight of the beautiful Freedom Tower under construction at the World Trade Center site. The tower’s construction had just reached its full height, and it is truly a wonder to behold. Filling the void left by the fallen towers, the Freedom Tower speaks loudly and proudly, “We’re back! You can’t keep us down”. However, along with great pride, a tiny nagging doubt intruded into my thoughts. It could become a perfect target. I pray not. Never again. Polly Shaw, Argyle
Non-Essential History The Friends of the Cranford Public Library invite you to a presentation on absolutely non-essential history on Wednesday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center. Why is New York City called the Big Apple? What were Robert E. Lee's last words? Why was Stonewall Jackson called Stonewall? Why is it bad luck to whistle on a Broadway stage? Why are the New York Giants called the Giants? What does the "hono" in Honolulu mean? Why was the term "cowboy" considered a racial slur? Who were the six Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima? You will learn all this and more in a fast-paced, non-stop hour of non-essential (but very entertaining) history! The program will be presented by Dr. James P. Kane. Dr. Kane, a former prep school headmaster, principal and superintendent of schools, is currently an adjunct professor of education at William Paterson University. Admission to the program is free and all are welcome.

At a recent fundraiser in New York City, President Obama told his high-dollar donors that he wanted to enter a new phase of this race, different from the negative campaigning that has thoroughly defined his reelection effort thus far. Is it a sign that all his attacks on Romney aren't working? At his July 30 funder in the Big Apple, Obama assured his audience that he was about to pivot to a more positive campaign. "There is going to be, though, as the summer winds down and we get into the fall, the need for voters in these swing states to know not just what they’re voting against but also what they’re voting for," he said. "And so we’ll be spending a lot of time talking about the specific agenda that I intend to pursue in the second term, which I think will make sure that this economy is going full guns." Leaving aside his use of "guns" (there's that "violent imagery" that the Old Media is always braying about), it is interesting to note that this issues-based campaign is exactly the sort of race Ob ...

By now most people have heard about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s battle to ban Big Gulps in the Big Apple. According to Bloomberg’s health commissioner, we have a crisis of obesity. (I’m not going to elaborate on how funny it is that while Bloomberg wrings his hands over soda pop, he thinks that a 1-foot-in-diameter donut just means more delicious goodness for everyone.) In the health-obsessed culture that characterizes America’s urbane elites, it is widely considered to be a moral imperative for government to do whatever it can to stem the tide of obesity in America. Tackling childhood obesity is First Lady Obama’s signature cause, and she’s done an admirable job of encouraging families to move their bodies more and make better choices about what they put on their plates. It seems that neither Mrs. Obama nor Mayor Bloomberg has any qualms about taking a firm “moral” stand on the issue of nutrition. Their logic: Drinking a 64-ounce cola is bad for everyone, and government is mo ...

New Yorkers will be treated to a special sight tonight: Today is one of two days a year when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid. As the sun sets on the Big Apple, it will light up both the north and south sides of every cross street. The event has been dubbed "Manhattanhenge" for the way it turns New York City into a Stonehenge-like sun dial. The sun sets perfectly in line with the Manhattan street grid twice a year, explains astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on the Hayden Planetarium website. Here are the best viewing times for Manhattanhenge 2012: May 29 at 8:17 p.m. EDT July 12 at 8:25 p.m. EDT There are two other days when the sun isn't perfectly aligned with the grid, but still puts on a show. On these two days, May 30 and July 11 this year, you see a full sun sitting on the horizon when looking down the cross streets, rather than the half orb. Here are the best times to catch the full sun setting on New York City: May 30 at 8:16 p.m. EDT July 11 at 8:24 p.m. EDT The best ...

And now for today's New York trivia: In 1959, NY City Mayor Robert Wagner called on attorney William Shea to help bring a National League baseball team back to the Big Apple after both the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to California. New club owner Joan Whitney Payson shortened her team's corporate name (the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club) and came up with the Mets, and, until 2008, their home field was Shea Stadium. The teams colors were chosen in homage to the two teams that went before them-Dodgers blue and New York Giants orange-and because blue and orange are also the colors of the New York City flag.

Looks like my "missing shirt" that Mrs. W. doesn't care for on TV has surfaced after an exhaustive air and land search. Somehow it ended up in Central Park, New York City! Perhaps a mighty wind picked it up and it landed in the Big Apple. Clearly I won't be wearing it on TV tonight! lol Now this is an interstate matter and we'll have to dispatch some of our NY muscle on the case! Unless, of course, Sue Simmons runs down, grabs it and lets Chuck wear it on the evening broadcasts emanating from 30 Rock!!
In 2010, the New York City-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area had a median gross rent of $1,125, which equals 155 hours of work. Basically, if you worked full-time, didn't eat, commute or pay utilities, and you gave nearly every penny to your landlord, you could just make it in the Big Apple. * This is ridick
