The diplomatic tussle centers on whether emerging power India should be allowed into a key forum deciding rules for civilian nuclear trade, even though it has refused to join an international pact under which it would have to give up its nuclear weapons. London, Washington, Paris and others argue nuclear-armed India should join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) - established in 1975 to ensure that civilian nuclear exports are not diverted for military purposes. Britain has pressed its case in a paper prepared ahead of the NSG's annual meeting this week, arguing India qualifies because of the size of its civilian atomic industry and its commitment to stopping the spread of military material. Led by their leader, a frail man wearing a loose checked shirt, the Aam Aadmi Party definitely has something to offer to the disenchanted voters. The volunteers always form the back-bone of an organization, be it a political party or an NGO. And this party has them in plenty. Ranging from vegetable vendors to Chartered Accountants, the party flaunts a strong volunteer force within less than year of its formation. Who are these volunteers? Who coaxed them to join a political party? The answer lies on the topis they wear. They are the aam aadmi, people who had never imagined in their life that they would be working for a party, not for political power but to bring about a systematic change. “I wa ...

Although the per capita rate of rapes reported to the police in India is below that of many developed nations, some experts believe that many sexual attacks go unreported and that the actual number is far higher. ![]() Cabinet to take up ordinance on Food Bill today New Delhi: The Union Cabinet will on Wednesday promulgate an ordinance to push through the Food Security Bill, which is the brainchild of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The constant disruptions by the Opposition in Parliament had resulted in a delay in passing the Food Security Bill so far. The government’s decision to promulgate an ordinance will make the Food Security Bill a law without taking prior approval from Parliament, something that the Opposition is strongly objecting to. "A bill that's so important to national life is being passed through an ordinance. It's shameful and can't be a worse advertisement of parliamentary system," said CPM's Nilotpal Basu. Sushma Swaraj, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, too had said that the BJP wants the bill and does not mind a special session of Parliament to get it passed, but they strongly oppose an ordinance. The government's calculation, however, seems different. Once an ordinance is passed, the Govern ...

He was the wicket keeper and I the opening batsmen for our junior school cricket team at St. Columba’s School, New Delhi. One thing is for sure, SRK was more dynamic and charming behind the wicket than I was. I played the ‘slow & steady, old style knocks’ that kept one end of the wicket fortified. That was the call of the day. Dynamic, ‘fling around the bat in any style cricket’ culminating in today’s T20 format was unthinkable back then. Our coaches, Gurcharan Singh (an ex Ranji Trophy coach) and Br. The surprise would have been if we had won. As it is, I think the Karnataka results have a profound lesson for the BJP. In a way it has a lesson also for the Congress. The common lesson for both of us is : let’s not take the common man for granted. He himself may occasionally deviate from the norms of ethical conduct, but he does feel extremely angry when he sees those at the helm of national affairs behaving immorally. This is the principal reason why there is such intense allergy towards politicians generally nowadays. If corruption provokes indignation in Bangalore, why would it not cause the same feeling in New Delhi? Actually, I hold that it is the Karnataka results that have contributed to clinching action being taken even in the matter of Coalgate and Railgate! Before Karnataka results, the Congress Party seemed determined not to do anything abou ...

![]() The India Gate is the national monument of India[citation needed]. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, it was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Built in 1931, the monument was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which in turn was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. Originally known as the All India War Memorial, it is a prominent landmark in Delhi and commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It is composed of red and pale sandstone and granite. Originally, a statue of George V, Emperor of India stood under the now vacant canopy in front of the India Gate, but it was removed to Coronation Park together with a number of other British Raj-era statues. Following India's independence, the India Gate became the site of the Indian Army's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, known as Amar Jawan Jyoti ("the flame of the immortal soldier"). The blue book makes a case for China to deepen its economic engagements with the Indian Ocean Region’s (IOR) littoral states, but stresses that Beijing’s interests will be driven by commercial — rather than military — objectives. However, it warns that the Indian Ocean could end up “as an ocean of conflict and trouble” if countries like India, the U.S. and China failed to engage with each other more constructively as their interests begin to overlap. In a frank assessment of China’s role in the IOR so far, the book laments that Beijing has trailed behind New Delhi a ...

![]() Bakshi and Sadiq had duped the Sheikh with a ruse of which New Delhi and Karan Singh were doubtless aware. They pretended to be part of the policy review. What nettled Nehru was that his strategy was unravelling. The Sheikh had begun to bow to Kashmiri opinion, not to Nehru. Even at the best of times he had made known his reservations on accession and asserted his independence. He said at Hazratbal on April 25, 1952: "It would be better to die than to submit to the taunt that India was our breadgiver." He explained to Nehru on May 2 that he had sought to counteract the propaganda that "we were being kept in the saddle with the help of the Indian bayonets" (SWJN; Volume 18; pages 387 and 390). None of his successors could use such language. He drew his power from the people; they, from New Delhi. He had his hand on the pulse of the people; they on their masters' pulse. Sheikh Abdullah was battling against the tide of public opinion since the accession. Hence, the proposal he gave to the British Commonwealt ...

Saving The Planet, One Drop At A Time An inspiring true story that shows just how simple it can be for one person with an idea to make a difference. Aabid Surti is an odd character. A few years ago, the angular, bearded author was invited to meet the President of India to receive a national award for literature at a ceremony in the capital, New Delhi. He politely declined. Absorbed in writing the first draft of his new novel, he cited the reason that he did not have time. But what he has made time for every Sunday for seven years now, is going door-to-door in Mira Road, a non-descript suburb of Mumbai, with a plumber in tow, asking residents if they need their tap fixed for free! As a distinguished Indian painter and author, Aabid has written around 80 books but no story so moved him as the truth about water scarcity on the planet. “I read an interview of the former UN chief Boutros Boutros Ghali,” he recalls, “who said that by ...

Since I was already carrying on that work with the help of my wife Swati, (who sometimes back qualified the exam conducted by National Institute of Securities Market) though I was not making a representation in open, this decision has given me a boost and I can now represent myself to be carrying on that work as well, alongwith my normal professional work. I am so happy for this cheers !

"Doctors removed the ventilator and other medical aids, which kept her alive, around 4pm," Amar Singh Rathi, the victim's father, told IANS. Acid was flung on Preeti, 25, by some unknown people as she got off the New Delhi-Mumbai Garib Rath Express at Bandra Terminus May 2 morning to begin work as a nurse at the army hospital here. She was on a ventilator for the past two weeks as her right lung had collapsed and the left one was only partly functional. Joy for being passed as a graduate and sorrow for leaving this magical world of fantasy. I have seen many ups and downs during these two years even though I will call them my best years spent because I learned a number of things apart from a lot of enjoyment. Whenever i will remember my college days apart from friends I will always cherish my supervisors who were always my source of inspiration. I hated this city Delhi when i came here at first but it was IIT which rejuvenated me always whenever i entered into its premises. Daunted by Barun's angry female fans, the show's producer had abruptly pulled the plug on the soap, putting the entire cast and crew out of a job without much warning. There were reports of women threatening to ransack the sets of the show and committing suicide. "I was shocked and upset. The main thesis of the book is that democracies per se are not all good but need to strive to get better. According to the author of the book Anupam Srivastava though India is a democracy but power is wielded by a few and it does not ensure that the power lies in the hands of the people. The book based on the insights from the writings of Mahatma Gandhi and other nationalists, but written as fiction, has analyzed the intent and the actuality of democratic set up in India. The author has successfully proved that Indian leaders have hidden agenda of abandoning the democratic ideal and wield power for personal gains. At a book release event in New Delhi, it was claimed to be an eloquently written novel that vividly examines the scenario in India during the time of the colonial rule and immediately after its collapse. ![]() Saturday, September 19, 2009 North to Ladakh, on a High-Altitude Adventure By John F. Burns Published: Sunday, February 28, 1999 When my family and I planned an overland journey to Ladakh last summer, it seemed like the ideal conclusion to our assignment in India, where I had spent nearly five years as the South Asia correspondent of The New York Times. Our aim was to round out our travels with a trip so ambitious and compelling that it would ease the wrench of leaving a country that had entwined our hearts. The plan was to make a two-week, 2,500-mile round-trip road journey northward from New Delhi -- first, across the north Indian plain to the foothills of the Himalayas, then up the deep valleys and over the mountains to Ladakh, a part of ancient Tibet that became a northern outpost of India when it was annexed by Britain in the mid-19th century. Along the way, we would cross several of the world's highest-altitude road passes, one of them at nearly 18,000 feet, close to the height of the base camp used ...

![]() Crime Against Women in India Over 32000 murders, 19,000 rapes, 7500 dowry deaths and 36500 molestation cases are the violent crimes reported in India in 2006 against women. There are many instances of crime especially against women go unreported in India. These are figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau recently. While Madhya Pradesh is worst off among the states, the national capital New Delhi continues to hold on to its reputation of being the most unsafe city in India. Delhi takes the top slot for crimes ranging from murders and rapes to dowry deaths and abductions. It reflects country's law and order situation when its capital is a cauldron of crime. Instead of leading the way in tackling crime, Delhi only seems to do worse year after year. For instance while the national crime rate declined negligibly by .02 % in 2006; Delhi's rate grew to 357.2more than double the national average of 167.7. Rape is the fastest growing crime in the country today and as many as 18 women are assaulted in ...

They said the government should include provisions to ensure that relevant authorities accord all approvals within a specified time frame. Detailing the impact of the bill on the real estate sector, executive MD of Cushman and Wakefield Sanjay Dutt said in the short-to-medium term, there could be a slowdown in new project launches as getting permissions is a time consuming process. He said the government will have to follow up with much-needed administrative reforms to speed up the approval process. “The Bill may create an upward pressure on prices as there will also be some cost implications as developers wait to launch their projects with due approvals in place,” he added ...

The passengers got lucky with the pilots finally — after a long delay — remembered to switch off the engine and diverting the aircraft to the nearest airport, Nagpur, on the single functional engine. However, the engine was not that lucky. While switching it off instantly after getting the low oil warning would have meant AI get away with minor repairs, the delay has led to it being a complete waste and requiring a replacement — something that wi ...

Lalu Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi's 15-year stewardship of Bihar prior to 2005 is widely considered as the time when development hit rock-bottom and crimes went sky-high. It is a period which has not been forgotten and many feel that fear of Lalu Yadav's return remains Nitish Kumar's biggest political capital. The substance of Dr Manmohan Singh's trip to Japan was manifold and certainly a mixture of politics, economics and strategy. Surrounded with sullied strategic environment and the spreading fire that engulfs the region, New Delhi can either continue to live in fear as it has in the past, or fight back. There are two distinct threats that endanger the existence of the Union. Equally true is the fact that Americans are fighting Indias war too. If they withdraw from the AF-PAK area, the entire Jihad factory will descend mercilessly upon India to create mayhem. First are the imperial ambitions of China that threaten to ultimately dismember the Indian Union in twenty or thirty parts. To succeed in its aim, Beijing over a period of time unleashed the first phase of the strategy and intelligently encircled India. This initial phase resulted in shrinking New Delhi’s strategic frontiers in its vicinity. Indians unwittingly made the Chinese task a cakewalk, as they were preoccupied with internal bickering for short-term personal gains, overlooking t ...
