To anyone who doubts the level of hatred, contempt, and disgust for the "other" that a dominant people can have, look no further than this 1891 editorial from the Chicago Tribune. In it you'll find linguistic and religious exceptionalism, a ludicrous interpretation of reality, and poorly disguised racism: “[Blacks] have been taught to labor [...] They have been taught Christian civilization, and to speak the noble English language instead of some African gibberish. The account is square with the ex‑slaves.” The full article, by Ta-Nehisi Coates, is in The Atlantic (May 21). Message me if you want a link to the article; I'm not posting it here as only the above excerpt fits into the scope of what I share on RedLine's page. Signs of overt racism still are all around us, be it a New Hampshire police commissioner’s use of an ethnic slur to describe President Obama or an NBA team owner’s disturbing remarks about black athletes and fans. By now, we all know the drill, the media calls these people out for their ugly words and we play our parts, shaking our heads in sad disbelief — then return to our daily lives. Ta-Nehisi Coates, a senior editor at The Atlanticmagazine, thinks it’s time for a bold step to change the way we talk and think about race in America. This week, Bill speaks to Coates about his June cover story for the magazine, provocatively titled “The Case for Reparations.” In it, Coates argues that we have to dig deeper into our past and the original sin of slavery, confronting the institutional racism that continues to pervade society. From the lynching tree to today’s mass incarceration of young African-Americans, he says we need to examine our motives more intently and reconcile the moral debt and ec ...

I've plowed through 4 book reviews of Michael Waldman's "The 2nd Amendment." I'm starting to reconsider my worldview. Sarah Silverman is right. We don't have a problem with firearms generally in America. We have a problem with firearm distribution. Instead of only embittered, hysterical, shrieking, bigoted white Fox News viewers owning/brandishing/embracing firearms, everyone needs to take up the cause of firepower. Black radicals, union members, Occupy activists, pro-choice/equal pay feminists, consumer protection advocates, and other assorted liberals need to arm themselves with equal passion. Today’s highlights: Is the legacy of slavery alive and hurting African Americans now, or is a regrettable part of America’s past that requires nothing of citizens today? In an epic essay, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates argues that "until the U.S. pays its moral debts to African-Americans, our country will never be whole." He discusses his new piece for The Atlantic in support of reparations. [Produced by Amy Ta and Tanya N. Ballard] Kids who grow up in cities may not have many safe places to play. Darell Hammond of the nonprofit group "KaBoom!" got serious about the issue. He partnered with the Humana Foundation to develop a national movement called Playful City USA, which honors communities that give kids easy access to play. He talks more about his efforts.
