Nasarawa: Bodies of 25 Missing Policemen Found in Mass Grave The death toll of policemen killed by members of the Ombatse cult in Nasarawa State has climbed to 72 following the discovery of the bodies of 25 policemen that had been hitherto declared missing in a mass grave in an unnamed village in the state. Security authorities had earlier confirmed 57 operatives, comprising 47 policemen and 10 agents of the State Security Service (SSS), killed in the attack that took place on May 7 when they were on a rescue mission to a village in Nasarawa State. Apparently, National Security wants to provide protection for the records depository of the Supreme Court Registry. The Registrar is said to oppose the move. The Registrar has right of way here. It's simple: SEPARATION OF POWERS. The Executive branch can't impose its will on the Judicial Branch. In any serious jurisdiction anything that smacks of interference with the courts is anathema. In fact, the bailiff system is testament to the need for the courts, as much as practical, to maintain its own order and security systems. If the Judicial Service invites National Security, that's fine. But the executive agencies in charge of security should not be able to extend their influence to the courts without the invitation of the Chief Justice. That is the proper mold for sound institutional development in Ghana.
