Do you know why the cyclone which created huge destruction in Andhra Pradesh and Odhisa is called Hudhud? Well, the reason is quite interesting. No, it’s not the word from Salman Khan’s movie Dabangg‘s song. The word Hudhud comes from Arabic and refers to the hoopoe bird – the national bird of Israel. But the current cyclone is named by Oman. We will tell you how and why. The practice of naming cyclones began years ago in order to help identify a storm in alert messages, as the technical terms of each cyclone are hard to remember. Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center in USA. Likewise, the eight countries of India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand made an agreement and formed a list of names for cyclones in the Indian subcontinent and South East Asian regions. The Indian Meterological Department (IMD) which issues cyclone advisories for these eight countries has a list of 64 names. Interestin ...

Arthur Makes Landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane Arthur became the first category 2 (or stronger) hurricane to make landfall in the United States in almost six years. The last Cat 2, Ike, hit the US in 2008. It is also stronger than any Atlantic hurricane in 2013. The National Hurricane Center says the center made landfall at about 11:15PM EDT near Shackleford Banks, NC. However, little change in strength is expected in the next few hours and Arthur is still expected to pass over the Outer Banks while accelerating to the north-northeast.
The combination of Arthur and a frontal boundary will spread the potential for heavy rain and flash flooding up the East Coast today. WPC is forecasting a slight risk of excessive rainfall/flash flooding for much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today through tonight (Areal averaged rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches (are possible over portions of eastern New England (locally higher amounts are possible). The US National Hurricane Center has said that Hurricane Arthur was upgraded to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds at 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour).
SPECIAL Hurricane Arthur VIDEO UPDATE: If you have friends or family in the coastal regions of South Carolina and especially North Carolina, please share this with them. (DISCLAIMER: The views in this video should not supercede those of the National Hurricane Center and local officials.)
At this time, the National Hurricane Center is still predicting that we may see Tropical Storm force winds and periods of heavy rainfall as Hurricane Arthur skirts our coast. Unless Arthur's track shifts further west, the greatest impacts will be felt along the coast and east of Highway 17.
The storm making its way toward North Carolina’s coastal counties became Hurricane Arthur on Thursday morning as its sustained winds reached 75 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Almost all of the NC coast, particularly its barrier islands, is in the storm's potential path. The weather will hit hardest overnight Thursday.
Here's the Wednesday 11pm NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center advisory for Arthur. This is the forecast wind field beginning noon on Thursday and runs through 9am on Friday. This forecast brings the strongest winds from the Crystal Coast through the Outer Banks. Remember, we're still 24 hours out and the forecast could change. Stay with Time Warner Cable News for complete updates.
In their 11pm advisory, the National Hurricane Center will not yet upgrade Arthur to Hurricane Status. However, such an upgrade is likely on Thursday. If you're in a Hurricane Warning area and/or have been asked to evacuate, take swift, safe action immediately --your life is in danger!! Stay calm but act quick and safely to get to a place of safety. Now is the time to execute your Hurricane Preparation Plan. Hurricane Arthur is forecast to cross the Outer Banks of North Carolina and then head north and east up and away from the northeast US coast. The next possible landfall will be in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland Canada this weekend.
Big waste of time doing a weather video. The darn thing won't upload to Youtube. UGH! Anyway, Arthur is expected to reach hurricane status by midnight in my opinion as winds were already recorded at 70 mph when Air Force Recon flew through this afternoon. Hurricane Warning are out, check the National Hurricane Center for more details. Upper level low in Chicago is keeping the clouds and some showers around, COOL DOWN into the 50s in some spots around the WI, IL, and SW MI shorelines. Lower 60s elsewhere. Going to be a chilly evening in these spots upper 40s are possible in a few northern spots. Delightful holiday weekend ahead for most of the country East of the Plains with plenty of sunshine, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures. A big ridge out of the West is keeping things steamy and muggy for the region. 100s to 110s in the Desert Southwest. It is a hot one! Have a great evening.- Dave.

In late October 2010, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began to monitor a weak area of disorganized weather along the southern periphery of a frontal system, associated with a broad surface trough east-northeast of Puerto Rico.[1] Supported by an upper-level low retrograding to its southwest, the system generated clusters of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, otherwise known as convection.[2] The activity gradually enhanced as environmental conditions within its encounter became more favorable over time.[3] Around 1200 UTC October 28, satellite imagery showed what appeared to be the formation of a surface low within the trough. Shower and thunderstorm activity accordingly intensified, and the NHC assessed a high chance for tropical or subtropical development.[4] At the time, the center of circulation remained poor; however, it became better defined later that day, with a stable amount of corresponding convection.[5] Although the upper low had remained adjacent, it was located well to the sou ...

Tropical season in the eastern Pacific Ocean is suppose to start on May 15th. It looks like it could be starting a little bit early. Right now the National Hurricane Center is flagging a disturbance with a 50% chance of tropical development. Some of the computer models indicate that it could head towards Mexico. It's still too early to say if it will affect our weather here in South Texas as the system has not formed yet.
Interesting… Here we are in early May and the National Hurricane Center has issued an outlook for a possible tropical wave in the Eastern Pacific. The wave south of Mexico has a 50% of developing into a tropical disturbance, which is not great, but it’s interesting none the less since the season hasn’t officially begun.

When trouble blows into your life, seek shelter in God. The safest place in South Florida during the Hurricane Season may be the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The $5 million structure boasts 10-inch concrete walls designed to withstand the force of 130 mph winds. Because the fierce storms come every year, the Center is there to provide a safe working environment for the people who monitor the weather and issue the warnings. When other residents leave, they must stay. Just like hurricanes, the storms of our lives arrive with unnerving regularity. Often they strike without warning and linger without welcome, testing the limits of our faith and endurance. But God has given us a place of safety in the midst of our circumstances. The prophet Nahum wrote, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him” (1:7). And the psalmist confidently stated, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the ear ...

[larger version] - A U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist at the Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies in St. Petersburg, FL, has examined climate features likely to have influenced this year's record number of U.S. hurricane landfalls. In an article published as the cover story in the December 14, 2004, issue of Eos (American Geophysical Union Transactions, v. 85, no. 50), Brian Bossak, a USGS Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow, concluded th ...

Merry Christmas to all my friends at the National Weather Service . And NOAA. And the National Hurricane Center.
MiKayla came in my room about 7:30ish asking me how hurricane Katrina got its name. I gave a short, simple answer as best as I could. She is now still researching the national hurricane ceNter and the world meteorological organizations.
It's one of those terms we hear all the time: for example, Hurricane Wilma (that slammed popular Cancun, in October 2005) was a "Category 5 hurricane". Many family travelers leave their hurricane-free home towns and travel to tropical areas during the long Hurricane Season from June to November. Good idea, then, to know a few basics. Such as: What exactly does a hurricane "Category" mean? The classification system -- called the "Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale" -- is based on wind intensity. A civil engineer named Herbert Saffir, (working for the UN in 1969, studying low-cost housing in areas vulnerable to hurricanes), wanted to classify a storm's strength and potential for destruction. He devised five hurricane categories based on wind speed. Saffir passed on his system to the National Hurricane Center, where meteorolgist Bob Simpson added further factors such as storm surge and flooding. However, by May 2010, the hurricane category system changed back to a scale for wind intensity only. Hurricane Categor ...
