National Governors Association

The National Governors Association (NGA), founded in 1908 as the National Governors' Conference, at the Conference of Governors; that conference was felt necessary by the Inland Waterways Commission the previous October, to provide both state and national views relating to practical questions dealing with natural resources utilization and management in the Progressive Era.

Obama's 'Republican Sequester' Setup The NeoCom's Real Sequester Agenda By Mark Alexander • February 28, 2013 "He who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time, till at length it becomes habitual..." --Thomas Jefferson (1785) Addressing the National Governors Association this week, Barack Hussein Obama proclaimed, "At some point, we've got to do some governing. And certainly, what we can't do is keep careening from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis." But Obama himself engineered his rapid political ascension -- from junior senator in 2005 to president of the United States in 2009 -- precisely by hopping "from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis." Page one of his political playbook, authored by Rahm Emanuel, states: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste...crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not before." This unknown "community organizer" anddisciple of hate, was mentored by avowed Marxists, who pave ...

GOP Governors Continue Caving In to ObamaCare Mandates Republican governors once so ferocious in their fight against ObamaCare now seem content to roll over and play dead. Perhaps their new agreeable attitude is inspired by the fact that President Obama was reelected in November while their own political futures remain in jeopardy. As the Associated Press reported last Sunday, “nearly two dozen GOP governors elected in 2009 and 2010 could face the voters again.” The conciliatory spirit among the GOP executives was strong at the annual winter meeting of the National Governors Association held February 22-25 in Washington, D.C. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (shown), once one of the most brazen bulldogs in the Republican kennel, reflects the new pragmatism prevalent among the GOP governors in comments he made at the governors meeting. "People may agree or disagree with my position on this social issue or that social issue, but as long as I'm not rubbing it in their face all the time and instead talking ...

If sequestration occurs on March 1 it will hit states reliant on defense spending especially hard, according to the laundry list of multibillion-dollar federal spending cuts released Sunday night by the White House. The mandatory, across-the-board cuts will reduce all military spending by 8 percent over the rest of the fiscal year and mean furlouighs for tens of thousands of civilian Defense Department employees. Five percent of all other federal spending would be cut. If Congress and the White House cannot reach an agreement to avert the automatic cuts, a broad swath of government services would be reduced: law enforcement, food safety, schools, national parks, health services and the military. More specifically: Kids sent home from Head Start, airline passengers stuck at choked security checkpoints, unemployed people turned away from job counseling. The 50-state list was released as President Obama hosted the governors at a White House dinner, an annual tradition of the National Governors Association wi ...

The Raw Story: Ingraham: Obama abusing the press like ‘battered’ women and prostitutes : "Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham on Tuesday accused President Barack Obama of abusing members of the media like “battered” women and prostitutes, who he had a one-night stand with and left them because “he got what he wanted.” Ingraham told the hosts of Fox & Friends that “you can see the whole Obama machine begin to crumble” if members of the press began to doubt the president’s assertion that Republicans should get most of the blame for refusing to avert automatic spending cuts in the so-called sequester. Fox News host Alisyn Camerota noted that Obama had recently asked the media to leave a meeting with members of the National Governors Association. “It’s like the battered press syndrome,” Ingraham opined. “These people are so in love — many of them, not all of them — so in love that, like, ‘Oh, he’s telling me to leave? I guess that means he loves me.’ I mean, at some poin ...

Patrick on 'Meet the Press' challenges GOP on sequestration by Laurel J. Sweet, Feb 24, 2013 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) Gov. Deval Patrick challenged Republican leadership today to stop pushing President Obama over this week's threatened $1 billion in federal sequestration budget cuts and "put it to a vote." "We've actually seen some $2.5 trillion in budget cuts from this president and the only plan on the table right now to avoid sequester is the president's plan," Patrick, in Washington, D.C., for the National Governors Association meeting, told NBC's "Meet the Press" host David Gregory this morning. "The president's plan has cuts -- in some cases, deeper cuts than sequestratian provides," Patrick continued. "But what we've seen is more of the same. The congressional Republican leadership moves the goalposts as soon as the president comes their way. There's an awful lot of things they say they support. Put it to a vote, because with Democrats and moderate Republi ...
(FM97 News / AP) — Both Democrats and Republicans at the annual National Governors Association meeting in Washington, D.C., are expressing pessimism that a deal will be reached to avoid across-the-board federal spending cuts. The governors say Washington's protracted budget stalemate could seriously undermine the economy and stall gains made since the recession. Hawaii Governor, Neil Abercrombie, noted the cuts could lead to 19-thousand workers laid off at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. He says that will "undermine our capacity for readiness at Pearl Harbor." The budget fight comes as many states say they are on the cusp of an economic comeback from the financial upheaval in 2008 and 2009. Congressional leaders have indicated a willingness to let the cuts take effect on March 1 and stay in place for weeks, if not much longer. The cuts would trim $85 billion dollars in domestic and defense spending. If nothing is done, cuts would go info effect on Friday.
I wish you all a good Monday and I hope that you had a relaxing weekend. As we get closer to the sequester, all eyes are on Congress (it seems like they always are!) to see if a deal can be struck to avoid the cuts. Many folks want them to go in effect, others not so much. But, at the National Governors Association meeting this past weekend, many governors want to take a look at Sen. Jim Inhofe's (R-Okla.) sequester plan, that Human Events first reported on Thursday. John Gizzi's story from the meeting is below. Also – Erick Erickson writes today on our sister site, RedState.com, that Virginia Gov. McDonnell can talk a "big game" when it comes to pandering to his base, "but when push comes to shove, when the time comes that being a conservative demands that you stand up for what's right and reject the easy way out, Bob McDonnell is not going to stand on principle." A must read. PLUS: THE NEW YORKER: Can Eric Cantor redeem his party and himself? Make sure to visit Human Events to see my video interview w ...
Will Texas go blue? Rick Perry says 'no way' Rick Moran I like the governor's confidence. And in the near term, Texas still looks like a GOP bastion. But 10 years from now? Wall Street Journal: For many, it's the country's ultimate over-the-horizon electoral question: Could Texas become a blue state? To which Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry emits a hearty guffaw. Texas going blue, he says, "is the biggest pipedream I have ever heard." To explain just how preposterous, Gov. Perry summons the example of the state's two arch rivals, the University of Texas and Texas A&M, his alma mater, whose colors are maroon and white. "The University of Texas will change its colors to maroon and white before Texas goes purple, much less blue," he said in an interview on the edges of the National Governors Association winter summit in Washington, D.C. he largest and most reliable Republican state on the presidential map has fallen into the GOP column in every presidential election since 1980. The annual National Governors Association meeting will be held in Washington, where governors are gathering amid another standoff between the White House and congressional Republicans over deep spending cuts. The timing gives governors, especially those jockeying to be seen as leaders of their respective parties, the chance to point to their stewardship of tight state budgets and policy agendas. Republican Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has built up a record of ethics reforms, cuts to business taxes and his state's response to the devastating BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He has proposed eliminating the state income tax by raising sales taxes and possibly boosting tobacco taxes and broadening the list of services taxed by the state. How do you feel about Jindal’s leadership as Louisiana’s governor? What’s his top accomplishment or failure? What more can be done to improve the State of Louisiana and do you feel the state is moving in the right direction? Share your thoughts for an upcoming edi ...

No Art for young people - that's the current plan. Let's hope the government has a re-think. Today, a letter signed by 100 organisations and individuals representing a broad range of interests, from The National Portrait Gallery to the National Governors Association, has been handed into Downing Street. The letter, addressed to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, is part of a campaign calling for an extended consultation period for the new English Baccalaureate Certificates (EBacc), in order to address the absence of creative and vocational subjects in the proposed new qualification for 16-year-olds.
Premier Redford has long championed opening new markets for Alberta oil, including projects like Keystone XL. Alberta's position is well understood by President Obama's administration, decision makers in Congress and Governors on both sides of the aisle - just last month the Premier was in Chicago and met with the National Governors Association on issues including Keystone XL. Premier Redford welcomes every bit of support for Alberta's efforts to open new markets and as today's letter speaks to, it's in all of Canada's interests for Alberta to succeed in opening new markets for our oil. – Premier’s Communications Office For background, here's a timeline of the Premier's advocacy activities around US market access: - October 2011: Premier visited Washington, DC, and met with a variety of political leaders and the U.S. State Department to address the Keystone XL permit application. BY BRIAN WILKINS 2010Branstad For Governor: Iowa's Terry Branstad Tough On Crime If It Doesn't Involve His Family This article must be prefaced with the fact that, as an Iowan born and raised, and in my 30s now, I grew up only knowing one governor, and that is Republican Terry Branstad, who served as the state's chief executive from 1983-1999. It seemed Iowa was doing pretty well in his years, but then again, I was just a kid and really didn't care much about politics. But with voters heading to the polls tomorrow in the Republican primary, Branstad's possible preferential treatment for his family when it comes to crime will always tarnish his legacy. It was Sunday afternoon, August 18, 1991, when Eric Branstad, Terry's then-16-year-old son, was driving to a friends house he was staying with near Granger, IA, while the governor and the rest of the family were in Seattle for a National Governors Association meeting. While driving up Highway 141, a two-lane highway, Eric pulled into the other lane to pass a ...

NSC to recall Federation secretaries On January 7, 2013  · In Sports 12:10 am         The Honorable Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has directed Secretaries of the Sporting Federations to prepare their handover notes ahead of their redeployment to the Commission. This is in line with the Honorable Minister’s commitment to reform the Federation and reposition them for greater efficiency.   At the moment, all Sporting Federations are deployed from the NSC and this has affected the internal cohesion of the Federations, which has been used as excuse by some Federations for non-performance in the past when they complained of interference. As part of this reform, the Federations will now have the power to appoint their own Secretaries, thereby granting them greater autonomy. However, the NSC will set the guidelines for the appointment of Secretaries. Similarly, the NSC is developing eligibility guidelines that will guide elections and app ...
According to a Dec. 27th posting on Sen. Feinstein's website and a draft of the bill obtained by NRA-ILA, the new ban would, among other things, adopt new definitions of "assault weapon" that would affect a MUCH LARGER VARIETY OF FIREARMS, require current owners of such firearms to register them with the federal government under the National Firearms Act, and require forfeiture of the firearms upon the deaths of their current owners. Even germans knew what time it was!! Elected officials in Florida did not ease race relations. Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward (1905–1909) suggested finding a location out of state for blacks to live separately. Tens of thousands of blacks moved to the North during and after World War I in the Great Migration, unsettling labor markets and introducing more rapid changes into cities. They were recruited by many expanding northern industries, such as the Pennsylvania Railroad, the steel industry, and meatpacking. Florida governors Park Trammell (1913–1917) and Sidney Catts (1917–1921) generally ignored the emigration of blacks to the North and its causes. While Trammell was state attorney general, none of the 29 lynchings committed during his term were prosecuted, nor were the 21 that occurred while he was governor. Catts ran on a platform of white supremacy and anti-Catholic sentiment and openly criticized the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) when they complained ...
Gov. Mary Fallin, who as vice chairman of a national group of governors met with the president last month, will be back in the nation’s capital this week urging Congress and the president not to unfairly slash funding to states in their effort to reduce the federal deficit.
Developed by a consortium of officials with massive backing from taxpayers and billionaires like Bill Gates, the planning has been underway for years. It was formally unveiled by the National Governors Association in 2010. In May of 2012, though, the U.S. Department of Education, which conservatives have long sought to abolish as an unconstitutional entity pursuing an unconstitutional agenda, also began offering huge taxpayer-funded incentives to school districts if they adopt the controversial scheme. “This district-level program is a full-scale assault on state sovereignty,” explains the group Truth in American Education, which opposes the Common Core plan. “It is a power-grab through which the federal government will skirt citizens’ elected statewide bodies and negotiate directly with school districts to embrace federal policy. It will also undermine the state governmental structure by grouping school districts together on policy decisions and thereby making it more difficult for the group to d ...
ARTS EDUCATION IT'S NOT A WASTE OF TIME. Ever since the No Child Left Behind act, the national discussion about failing schools has been all about "accountability" and "standards." Now, nobody in his or her right mind is against standards and accountability: We all want our kids to learn and to develop and to grow. But the "standards" movement is imposing a corporate, one-size-fits-all model on schools, focusing on high-stakes standardized tests that measure rote facts rather than the ability to think independently. Just yesterday, the National Governors Association released national core common standards that have been embraced by 48 states. The standards focus on language arts, science, and math, and they outline specific benchmarks each child has to meet in each grade. Not a word about the arts or about the value of multiple intelligences. And sadly, this isn't just happening here. And it's not just happening in K-12. It's infecting universities, too. Last month, an A-list of arts and education lumina ...
"(We) remain hopeful that President (Barack) Obama and the 113th Congress, as well as governors, will prioritize our students and public education and work hard to stave off further cuts," said Dennis Van Roekel, the president of the National Education Association, the largest U.S. teachers' union. - this was at the end of an article which explained that 11,000 teaching jobs were cut in December nationwide. Here is my problem. I don't know how anyone can live day to day on the hope that government will interecede on their behalf? This is the solution from this guy's point of view; we're just gonna sit back and hope that under pressure from our lobbiest group, Obama and government will do something, and of course the something they want government to do, is spend more money it doesn't have. Ever think of doing anything for yourself Dennis, be part of the solution maybe? Nah, he's just hoping government sees the error of its ways and ponies up! Dum Dum.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY: If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain. - Winston Churchill
Proponents and opponents of the president's health care overhaul shouldn’t get distracted by the political theater and low-level resistance that has obsessed the talking heads as of late.
Over 170 organizations, education-related and corporations alike, have pledged their support to the initiative. Yet the evidence presented by its developers, the National Governors Association (NGA) and Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), seems lacking compared to the independent reviews and the available research on the topic that suggest the CCSS and those who support them are misguided. The standards have not been validated empirically and no metric has been set to monitor the intended and unintended consequences they will have on the education system and children (Mathis, 2010). Yet most of the nation‘s governors, state education leaders, and many education organizations remain committed to the initiative. Surely there must be more compelling and methodologically strong evidence available not yet shared with the general public or education researchers to support the standardization of one of the most intellectually diverse public education systems in the world. Or, maybe there is not?
Tobacco settlement money is not going toward lung cancer research- "Through 2025, the Master Settlement Agreement and agreements with individual states will pay $246 billion to the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. In 1999, the National Governors Association declared its commitment "to spending a significant portion of the tobacco settlement funds on smoking cessation programs, health care, education, and programs benefiting children." A review of the most recent Government Accountability Office report on states' allocation of their payments reveals that virtually none of this money is being spent on lung cancer research."

The Wall Street Journal REVIEW & OUTLOOK October 26, 2012, 6:40 p.m. ET Chronic Fatigue Economy We borrowed $5 trillion and all we got was this lousy 1.7% growth. The economy plowed ahead at a 2% growth rate in the third quarter, which thrilled more than a few of our liberal friends who think it's enough to re-elect President Obama. We'll soon find out if they're right, but there's no doubt their prosperity standards are slipping. In the third quarter of 1992, growth came in at 4.2% (3.4% for the year) and Democrats called it a catastrophe. The third-quarter figure means that growth for the first nine months of 2012 has been a paltry 1.7%. That's slower than last year (1.8%), which was slower than the year before (2.4%). The current recovery has had only two quarters, but not a single year, with growth above 3%. I want to personally thank Bambi Polotzola, my niece, for representing me at the Educator Excellence Celebration last night. I attended the National Association of State School Boards meeting in Washington, DC. I attended the conference designed for new Board members to acquire a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of state board members. Many of the participants in this year's conference are governors' appointees. I am going to confess that I lost my composure when two participants showed their disdain for teachers. I will simply state I defended my profession. I am sick of the rhetoric that some politicians use to defend their actions relative to reforming education in Louisiana. Having attended the NASBE Conference, I am more convinced we are part of a large educational experiment and our children are the guinea pigs.

Bottomline: intentionally or unintentionally. we talk a good show and do a lot of feel good programs for Veterans, but when it really comes down to it we are behind the power curve compared to our surrounding States. I know these comments will not set well with some people, however it is what it is and those that know me, know that I'm not one for sugar coating it.
The governor’s mansion -- a kingly abode for the governor and his family, right? Don’t think like a peasant. It is so much more. "Executive residences," as the National Governors Association calls them, are "regarded as an important symbol of the state’s culture and ...

Ronald Reagan Remarks to the National Governor's Association, Washington, DC : Education Date: February 22, 1988 . . . if you serve a child a rotten hamburger in America, federal, state and local agencies will investigate you, summon you, close you down, whatever. But if you provide a child with a rotten education, nothing happens, except that you're likely to be given more money to do it with. Well, we've discovered that money alone isn't the answer.
is. Gov. Scott Walker Has Some Advice for Mitt Romney cross-posted from Political Animal, the blog of Washington Monthly The National Governors Association is about to kick off its annual meeting, giving reporters a prime opportunity to schmooze multiple govs in a presidential election year. And the way things tend to work in our election system these days, the outcome of the race could ultimately hang by the vote count in a single state. The meeting, in Williamsburg, Va., is hosted by the commonwealth's Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is often mentioned as a contender for the number two slot on the Republican presidential ticket. Not surprisingly, governors on both sides of the aisle had no shortage of advice for their respective presidential candidates. Republicans, predictably, want Romney to fight back harder against the Obama campaign's charges of dishonesty on Romney's part regarding his tenure at Bain Capital. (Yesterday, I speculated as to why Romney wants people to believe he wasn't running the show in N ...
s blog | July 13, 2012 | 4 comments 12 most progressive governors By Carrie Mihalcik / current.com / from across the country are gathered in Williamsburg, Va., for the National Governors Association's annual meeting. Among the topics sure to be discussed are health care reform, *** marriage and renewable energy. Progressives have made strides in all of these issues recently, but conservative governors continue to make progress difficult on a state level. Republicans currently hold the top position in 29 states. See our list of the 12 most dangerous governors. Although the GOP's angry rhetoric tends to grab all the headlines, there are progressive governors hard at work in the United States. No single governor is progressive on every single issue, but understanding the value of multiple opinions is part of what separates the left from the right. To give some recognition to the lawmakers who are standing up for liberal values at the state level, we present — in no particular order — the 12 most progress ...
On the sidelines of the National Governors Association meeting in Williamsburg, ALABAMA'S REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR, Robert Bentley, called on Romney to release all the documents requested of him. "If you have things to hide, then maybe you're doing things wrong," Bentley said. "I think you ought to be willing to release everything to the American people." After Democrats seized on his words, Bentley later said he still believes Romney's taxes should be released and he believes in transparency, but he's wasn't implying that Romney has anything to hide.
Democrats are at it again, claiming that Republicans, particularly House Republicans, are sabotaging the economy, while ignoring the quite effective job President Barack Obama has done to ruin the economy both on his own (regulatory and anti-fossil fuel hostility, wasteful green "investments," etc.) and with the help of Congressional Democrats when they controlled both Houses of Congress (stimulus, ObamaCare, trillion-dollar deficits, etc.). The best argument against this nonsense is that if Republicans were really interested in hurting the economy, GOP governors wouldn't be doing good to even great jobs with their own states' economies. At the Associated Press, aka the Administration's Press, Josh Lederman, reporting from the National Governors Association meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia, attempted to frame a response to GOP governors' contentions which qualifies as the howler of the day: The Democratic governors' concerted effort to impugn Republicans' motives suggests Democrats may seek to assign bla ...

Earlier Saturday, Governor Bentley was asked by a reporter at the National Governors Association conference whether he thought Mitt Romney should release tax returns. The Governor said yes - adding that he believes in transparency and releases his own tax returns each year.

Conservatives furious as President-elect Romney taps Obamacare supporter to lead transition team Mitt Romney in 2009 said he was "glad" President Obama was "copying" Romneycare's exchanges The crazy thing is that this isn't the Twilight Zone: Mitt Romney’s choice of Michael O. Leavitt as his transition chief has spurred loud opposition from some conservatives over Mr. Leavitt’s support of a crucial part of President Obama’s health care plan. Mr. Leavitt, a former governor of Utah who was secretary of health and human services in George W. Bush’s cabinet, is now a health care consultant who advises states on how to implement Mr. Obama’s health law. In an speech to the National Governors Association last year, Mr. Leavitt said that the health care “exchanges” at the heart of what conservatives call “Obamacare” were a good idea and should be implemented by state officials. The exchanges, he told the governors, are “a very practical solution to a problem that needs to be solved.” Those c ...

Some States Vote to Ban UN Agenda 21 Policies The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to ban UN Agenda 21 polices. This legislation will prevent local, county and state governments from adopting the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) programs. Other private organizations in league with ICLEI are: • National League of Cities • International City/County Management Group • National Governors Association • American Planning Group “I know it is totally against our Constitution from reading the U.N. biodiversity assessment,” Rep. Anne Cartwright (R-Alstead), the primary sponsor of the bill. “It’s through local initiative that it is being implemented in bits and pieces to erode our property rights.” Cartwright believes ICLEI is attempting to remove individual property rights through sustainable development. Cartwright said: “The ...
