The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a military service medal of the United States Armed Forces originally commissioned by President Dwight D. The Vietnam War was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist countries. 5.0/5

MELVIN D. GILLIS Obituary Melvin D. Gillis, 71, of Beallsville, died Friday, January 23, 2015, in UPMC-Shadyside hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born February 23, 1943, in Centerville Borough, a son of the late Demora L. and Nellie Ammon Gillis. Mr. Gillis was a 1960 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School and received a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Pennsylvania State University in 1966. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1967 to 1969, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a 46-year member of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville. Mr. Gillis retired from the state Liquor Store in California. He previously had a 15-year career in banking, working for Gallatin Bank and later First National Banks. Staff Sergeant Oliver Gilman Rowe Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Rowe served our country until February 11th, 1967 in South Vietnam. He served our country for 12 years. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal(s).
Just in from Dana Snow's son, Kevin... Dana Edwin Snow April 28, 1948 ~ December 17, 2013 Dana Edwin Snow, 65, of Marblehead, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening during the snow storm. He was the husband of Helene Stroh. Dana was the son of the late Edwin P. and Rosemary (Cruff) Snow of Marblehead. He graduated from Marblehead High School before joining the U.S. Air Force to serve his country during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. During his time in the service, Dana was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was stationed in Cam Ranh Bay from '69 to '70 and participated in the Cambodian incursion. His tour of duty included many fueling missions. He was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant and returned to Marblehead where he began what would be a life-long career working for the town that his family has lived in since the 1750s.
