Pat Bittinger suggested this post for another of Connellsville's Heroes: David Bartock, from South Connellsville, was born the 21st of April, 1948. He enlisted with the Marines in February, 1966, and served with the 1st Marine Division, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Viet Nam in the Quang Ngai Province. He was awarded the following service ribbons: the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal, the Viet Nam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, the Viet Nam Civil Actions Unit Citation, and the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal. Dave became Connellsville's first Viet Nam fatality on the 10th of March, 1967, still only eighteen years old, with just four months in country. He was leading a patrol on a sweep of an enemy stronghold. it was only after his mission was completed sucessfully that he tripped a booby trap that exploded and killed him. 2nd of 3 PGR Missions 6-12-14...SGT C. Garcia, United States Army Veteran. Medal of Honor recipient Candelario Garcia was born in Corsicana, Texas, Feb. 26, 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 28, 1963. Garcia distinguished himself on Dec. 8, 1968, as a team leader during a reconnaissance-in-force mission near Lai Khe, Vietnam. Garcia destroyed two enemy machine-gun positions in an attempt to aid casualties that were in the open and under fire. Garcia then rejoined his company in a successful assault on the remaining enemy positions. Garcia passed away on Jan. 10, 2013. Honor to the Troops Lt. Colonel Todd J. Clark, age 40 of Evans Mills, New York, died June 8, 2013, in Sharana, Afghanistan, of injuries received at Zarghun Shahr, Afghanistan from small arms fire in a “green on blue” incident. Lt. Clark, a Security Force Assistance Advisory Team Commander, completed the ROTC program and was commissioned into the Army in August 1995. He arrived at Fort Drum in January 2009. Clark deployed to Bosnia in 1999, to Kuwait in 2003, to Iraq in 2003, 2006 and 2009 and to Afghanistan in 2010. He again deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in January 2013.
