Two such colleges are being run by MNAs associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Dr Azhar Khan Jadoon (also a member of National Assembly Standing Committee on National Health Services) and Nasir Khan Khattak.   ARAB NEWS, JEDDAH, JAN 30,2014    IS IT THE END OF JUDICIAL ACTIVISIM IN PAKISTAN   Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, former chief justice of Pakistan, had rekindled hopes of the masses for a just and corruption-free society. After his retirement, however, those hopes are dwindling, as current judges of the superior courts are finding it difficult to cope with the situation reportedly due to threats from unscrupulous elements. Another anti-graft organization, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), is also struggling to live up to the people’s expectations. Established by former President Pervez Musharraf, the NAB got a fillip during Chaudhry’s tenure when its investigators not only nabbed senior civil servants but also recovered huge amounts of illegally acquired money from their possessions. Despite enjoying legal cover to remain free from external pressures, NAB is now reportedly feeling the heat and facing trouble in carrying out its responsibilities due to immense political pressure. When Rizwan Ahmed sawal, an employee of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation since 1992, moved to Rawalpindi from his hometown Attock a decade ago, he rented a house in the city’s high-end neighbourhood. He thought “the best thing about public sector employment was job security and getting salary on time every month,” he says, adding PTDC was one of the better paymasters in the public sector. He basically felt secure working for the Corporation. Life treated him well till the passing of the 18th amendment — when PTDC, along with its subsidiaries, was placed under the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) to ensure a smooth transition of power to the provinces. But, caught in the midst of a bureaucratic tussle, the Corporation’s transfer to the provinces is yet to see the light of day. The federation says though provinces agree to take charge of the physical assets, they refuse to accept the liabilities and employees. The provinces, on the other hand, accuse the federation for creat ...

NBP senior officials told that six of the 50 applicants for the post of president are currently employed at the bank and four of them have worked there in the past. As NBP continues to act as trustee of public funds, some senior officials are facing corruption inquiries as reported irregularities have brought the bank under scrutiny. PSM’s summary was on the agenda of the last two consecutive meetings of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, but the committee’s Chairman who is the Finance Minister did not deal with the matter ostensibly due to paucity of time, the sources added. “We invited Board members to Islamabad to plead the case of PSM before the ECC but the Finance Minister ignored this very important issue. Military rule in Pakistan started in 1977 witZia ul-Haqh General Zia ul-Haq took power in a bloodless coup and ruled under martial law. In 1985, Zia declared elections which put in place a parliament and a civilian Prime Minister, Muhammad Khan Junejo, who was later dismissed by Zia ul-Haq. Zia was killed in a mysterious plane crash in 1988. After Zia ul-Haq was killed, Benazir Bhutto was elected prime minister and became the effective head of government in December 2, 1988. IHC Reinstates Rashid as Pemra chief = Islamabad - In yet another Nadra-like episode, Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday restored Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Chairman Rashid Ahmad on his post. The government had sacked Rashid Sunday night, but the court declared the notification of his sacking null and void and restored him to his position till disposal of a petition through which he challenged his sacking. Only weeks before, the IHC had restored National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Tariq Malik within hours of his removal by the government. In both the cases, the government had accused the two men of indulging in corrupt practices and claimed they were appointed in violation of relevant rules and regulations. But opposition parties saw these moves on part of the PML-N government to bring the independent entities like Nadra and Pemra under its thumb. One-member bench comprising Justice Riaz Ahmed heard Rashid’s petition on Monday afternoon and issued ...
The National Accountability Bureau, most commonly called NAB. had received a generous Budget of Rs.1.765 billion for the year 2012-13 as compared to its Actual Expense (preliminary) 2011-2012 amounting to Rs 862 million--an increase of over 100%--under the previous PPP-led federal government. Budget stands at Rs 1.785 billion for 2013-2014 under the current PMLN-led federal government. Will any knowledgeable person/organization enlighten the poor taxpayers of Pakistan about the 100%+ jump in NAB's budget in 2012-2013 and nominal increase in 2013-2014? Is the closure of NAB on the cards? Well-supported comments will be appreciated

We get our Flags from China??? Three U.S. presidents, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died in 1826 on the 50th anniversary of signing the Declaration; Adams died at age 90 in Braintree, Mass., and Jefferson at age 83 near Charlottesville, Va. Five years later, James Monroe died on July 4 at age 73 in New York City. The United States imports six times as many American flags as it exports (in dollar value, $3.8 million versus $614,115 in 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau). U.S. flags made in China account for about 95 percent of the imports. July 4 is the deadliest day of the year on the nation’s roads. And alcohol-fueled festivities make it the second deadliest day — just behind New Year’s Day — for drunk-driving deaths. Fireworks, which are pretty much synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day, also make it one of the most dangerous days of the year. Fireworks-related injuries send an average of 200 Am ...
Punch External reserves drop to $47bn JULY 4, 2013 BY OYETUNJI ABIOYE The nation’s external reserves have dropped to $47bn, after being stagnant at $48bn for over three months. Data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s website on Wednesday showed that the reserves dropped to $47.6bn on Tuesday. The reserves, which hit the $48bn mark on March 11, 2013, had since then remained stagnant within the mark. Specifically, the latest CBN data showed that the reserves dropped from $48.0bn on June 28, 2013, to $47.6bn on July 2, 2013. The $47.7bn reserves represent about 30.5 per cent increase over the $36.6bn recorded on July 2, 2012. The nation’s external reserves had risen steadily since last year due to high oil prices and stability in the foreign exchange market. It was gathered that the performance of the reserves was driven mainly by proceeds from crude oil, gas exports and crude oil-related taxes as well as reduced funding of the Wholesale Dutch Auction System on the account of huge inflow of fo ...

while the nation is focused on the George Zimmerman/Travon Martin case, why is there no media attention focused on the huge number of black on black murders in the U.S. ? Each year, roughly 7,000 blacks are murdered. Ninety-four percent of the time, the murderer is another black person. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, between 1976 and 2011, there were 279,384 black murder victims. Using the 94 percent figure means that 262,621 were murdered by other blacks. Though blacks are 13 percent of the nation’s population, they account for more than 50 percent of homicide victims. Nationally, black homicide victimization rate is six times that of whites, and in some cities, it’s 22 times that of whites. Coupled with being most of the nation’s homicide victims, blacks are most of the victims of violent personal crimes, such as assault and robbery. The magnitude of this tragic mayhem can be viewed in another light. According to a Tuskegee Institute study, between the years 1882 and 1968, 3,446 bla ...

Although, as a judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi, Jafferi imposed life term on Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief has always been immensely appreciative of the way he conducted the trial against heavy odds while Pervez Musharraf was ruling the roost. “We should have judges like Jafferi,” the PML-N chief once said, showering praise on him. At the time, Jafferi was under enormous pressure from the military regime to award capital punishment to ...

Hi everyone as you know I post alot of political stuff on my pages, groups & my profile here. Some times we agree, sometime we don't. But please do me a favor don't ever attack anyone personally or I will boot your *** from them all like I had to do to one person last night who thought he was a big man by calling a women a skanky *** who should die. I don't mind a heated discussion on the posts but keep it civil please. What we should be doing is organizing and working together to come up with solutions to some of these issues. That will be the only way to make things better & bring America back from the brink of destruction. Put your party affiliation to the side and lets work to get what is best from both sides and try to get it in place. IT IS NOT ONLY ABOUT YOU, IT IS ALSO ABOUT THE REST OF THE PEOPLE IN AMERICA. WE ARE ONE COUNTRY, ONE PEOPLE SO LETS WORK TOGETHER. Thank You.

Strategic & Schemed Rip-off of Pakistani Banks For those dreaming to excel in the banking sector, the story of Kausar Malik inspires confidence: a man who first manoeuvred his induction as Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) in the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), his house was also hired, a banking unit was shifted at the premises and he was then posted at his home. STRATEGIC & SCHEMED RIP' OFF OF PAKISTAN BANKS- How the public sector banks are being looted day in and day out by crooks would have remained a secret had it not been disclosed in a report of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) after an inspection carried out in the NBP. As Kausar was posted in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), he changed four banks in five years, but never visited any officer even for a single day. The latest position he managed to grab was as SEVP in NBP that was apparently allotted to him for using his good offices for recovering the defaulted amount, a task which remained unfulfilled. Kausar nevertheless remains i ...
From the archives... Q 21. Sharia has stirred a lot of trouble in our nation’s recent history. Why is this so and why do you give Sharia your full support? A. The first question I always ask opponents of Sharia is how many non-Muslims have appeared before a Sharia court? None. In Bauchi, Kaduna, Zamfara and many others that have adopted Sharia, both the penal and the traditional codes are still in force. Those who say that Sharia is barbaric have my sympathy because they criticize from ignorance. If you visit cultures that are different from yours, you should be humble enough to find out why people do certain things. Muslims should have no apology for choosing Sharia because it tallies with their faith. Those who chose to marry or own wealth guided by customs of their predecessors are at liberty and so too the followers of English legal system. The constitution allows all of us space to operate Sharia, customary and other legal systems. Sharia states do not molest non-Muslims in their midst. The media, ...

How about I have been paying a monthly premium and expected a NEW phone! Verizon needs to step up their game! AND a 175.00 deductible; thats almost the deductible on our cars!! I was recently struck by a statement from former parlimantarian Dora Siliya on debt management : "There is lack of a comprehensive legal framework guiding debt contraction..Zambia will go back into debt trap so government should open up this process.people should be informed whenever debts are contracted" (Source : The Post) Many of us argued for a debt management bill for many years now. Ms Siliya laughed off the idea when she was a minister and MP in the MMD government. Now she has rightly realised that it was a good idea. The question is simple : what has changed? What has changed is that she has now realised the folly that pervades our national thinking. Many Zambians suffers from a delusion I call the "dedicated fellow hypothesis". The false delusion among many Zambians is that we simply need politicians with a good heart and everything will be fine. In other words we need a moral champion. When some of us have called for a debt management bill every government (PF and MMD) has responded with "just t ...
Immigration loop-holes will never go away as long as graft is allowed and accepted in the country. This issue has been covered since the 1960´s just read the Parliament Hansard and see how many times this is mentioned. What is interesting is a number of Somali aliens and refugees tried in the 80´s and 90´s across europe to obtain european citizenship on Kenyan passports they claimed were original. Upon checking over 95% were found to never have been issued by Kenyan authorities. At that time Kenya was warned to stop this abuse of its passports and thefts for selling on the black markets. Kenya refused to make serious efforts for this and got penalized by the UK authorities with them revoking the Visa on arrival travel Kenyan passport holders enjoyed. Same with Scandinavian nations with Finland revoking this first. When asked to produce birth certificates to verify their place of origin the same person above came to a dead end. They could not prove their places of birth. Many still hold alien refugee st ...

How impunity slows Nigeria’s development Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:00 By Chijioke Nelson Business Services - Money THE famous French sculptor, Auguste Rodin, once said: “Nobody does good to men with impunity”. Perhaps, out of experience, observation or philosophy, the man generally considered as the progenitor of modern sculpture, has been so convinced that impunity will end up enslaving, impoverishing, killing and ultimately raise more controversy in any given polity. But mostly, he may not have had Nigeria in mind as he philosophized. True, Nigeria is in the period of endemic impunity, entrenched by long years of practice and the economy and poor masses are bearing the brunt. But what is impunity? In the International Law of Human Rights, it refers to the failure to bring perpetrators of human rights violations to justice and, as such, itself constitutes a denial of the victims’ right to justice and redress, according to Wikipedia. The Freebase/Wiktionary said it is the “exemption from punish ...

$500m kickbacks feared in PIA 777 deal 24 February, 2012 ISLAMABAD: The controversial US$1.5 billion (Rs140 billion) PIA-Boeing deal has now become scandalous with the Transparency International Pakistan (TIP) smelling possible kickbacks of US$500 million (almost Rs46 billion) and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) confirming that the PIA has gone for the purchase of five Boeing ER 777-300 without floating any tenders. Following The News (a local newspaper) report on the controversial deal as published on Thursday; the National Accountability Bureau has also started looking into this deal but without any clear indication if it could dare touch the case for a fair probe. On Thursday, the TIP approached the top managements of both the PIA and Boeing Company with all its reservations vis-a-vis this agreement, signed between the two only a few days back. Adil Gillani has told this correspondent that hehad sought the copies of the Evaluation Report and Contract Agreement. He said the under the ...
8 ways young people in America get screwed: 1) Whenever governments gone wild engage in military folly on the other side of the globe, it’s the younger generation that’s expected to go fight and die in foreign lands. 2) They’ll pay rising taxes for their entire working lives in order to service the debts of previous generations. 3) They’ll have to support a ballooning number of retirees more than any other generation in modern history. Census data show that the number of workers per retiree is now at the lowest on record in the US, France, Germany, UK, Italy, Japan, etc. 4) Yet given the precarious balance sheets of most Western pension and Social Security Trust Funds, when it comes time for today’s younger generation to start collecting retirement benefits, those funds will have run completely dry. In other words, they’ll pay for decades into a system that won’t be there for them when it comes time to collect. 5) And with youth unemployment rates over 50% in some places in the world, it’s ...
My research team put up this statistics on Nigeria's economy - what do you think? Nigeria: a Case Study Nigerian economy is on the stranglehold of debt. At the national, sub-national, corporate and individual levels, debts owed to banks have held the economy to a stranglehold, impeding real economic growth though policymakers are not admitting same. Since the financial crisis of 2008, corporate indebtedness has almost wiped out the assets of companies in the country. Many of the companies operating are mere paper companies living on borrowed times of AMCON. Of the existing ten largest depots in the country, eight are under the hold of AMCON. The airlines are not spared. The airlines flying in the country today are doing so by the grace of AMCON. The same is the case with the manufacturing sector, where the largest of these firms owe the banks and their debts have been taken over by AMCON. If AMCON decides to liquidate companies owing it and sell all their assets to recover its money, Nigeria will have no ...
Texas could do well w/o the rest of the country. CA, not so much. The federal Bureau of Economic Analysis is out with its state-by-state economic growth numbers for 2012, and Texas is dancing the two-step all over California’s “recovery.” . . . The most telling indictment of California’s performance? If you removed oil and gas from the Texas economy, the Lone Star state has still outpaced growth in California. Apologists for the Golden State shouldn’t forget that it is in possession of two-thirds of America’s proven shale reserves, a treasure trove that rivals many resource-rich sovereign countries. The BEA also found, to the shock of all concerned, that while California was experiencing the largest tax hike in US history, the national economy grew at eight times the pace of California’s. The Texas economy, by contrast, grew 71 percent faster than the national economy that year. Finally, and most disturbingly, the US Census Bureau found that between 2009 and 2011, California had the highest ...

The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) urged the federal and provincial governments to ensure accountability at all levels and organize anti corruption drive to curb deep rooted corruption in society, institutions and the community at large. President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver speaking as a representative of United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) at a local club said it is appreciated that the ruling parties at the centre and the provinces are now determined to curb corruption, protect human rights, provide environment and make life easy for the labourers. These he said are the basic principles of the UNGC and it is the endeavour of UNGC to promote the war against corruption which is the root cause of all the troubles in society. Thaver said it is very important that the process of accountability is strengthened and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is given the task and the teeth to carry out its job without fear or favour. NAB should not spare anyone the big or small, the highly influent ...
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has defied the third and final notice of the National Accountability Bureau in the case pertaining to the appointment of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority’s former chairman Tauqeer Sadiq, after which he may face serious problems under the NAB Ordinance. However, NAB is working without a chairman whose approval is mandatory for issuing arrest warrants. “Mr Gilani was summoned on Tuesday but he refused to visit the NAB headquarters,” an official of the bureau told the media. He said that under the ordinance a person who had ignored three consecutive notices of NAB was liable to be arrested. Mr Sadiq, allegedly involved in a Rs82 billion scam, has escaped abroad. There are two ways for the arrest of an accused in a NAB case — through an order issued by the chairman and through a court hearing a reference. The signature of the NAB chairman is mandatory in both cases.

May 12, 2013   Elections 2013-Engineered with “Change”   Finally, 2013 elections took place in a timely manner and now it’s time to move-on.   Mian Nawaz Sharif’s PML(N) is a clean winner with less chances of reliance on coalition partners.  It may result in more constructive work done without any fear of vote of no-confidence, or people may see the same dictatorial approach as demonstrated by PML(N) in the past.  Unfortunately, dictatorial approach is more a possibility as, in the last five years, though judiciary enforced their authority on two prime ministers and the president, it failed to make Sharif dynasty accountable on cases filed in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).  Recent addition is the new bus project in Punjab that has not been questioned for transparency.  Are Sharifs considering it their strength that they are beyond accountability, or they will learn and change their approach, is a question that will be explained by their conduct in their upcoming five years tenur ...

CORRUPTION IN GB DEMANDED FOR NAB Corruption means dishonest exploitation of power for personal gain and extreme immorality or depravity. While Accountability means responsibility to response the concern authorities, who is directly or indirectly answerable to the public to judge and produce the performance of all kind of organizations and their personnel. But the question is why the GB government is hesitating to confronting with National Accountability Bureau (NAB)? The answer is very simple, the GB government has done nothing except augmenting dishonesty, misusing powers, offering bribery and behaving partiality. Yesterday the ministers were debtors of millions of rupees today they became tycoon having shopping centers and bungalows in Bahriya town, several plots in Islamabad, hotels in Gilgit and Skardu. ISLAMABAD: The threats hurled at late Kamran Faisal by the Director General (HR) National Accountability Bureau (NAB) were not the first of their type as reliable evidence has emerged which shows the said DG had also hurled similar threats to other people as well. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's anti-corruption chief refused a Supreme Court order to arrest the prime minister on Thursday, citing a lack of evidence in a graft case that sparked the latest clash between the government and the country's top court. The arrest order issued earlier this week intensified political turmoil in Pakistan where a firebrand Muslim cleric has been leading thousands in an anti-government protest in the capital, Islamabad, for the past four days. The cleric, Tahir-ul-Qadri, said Thursday would be the last day of the protest, but said he would let the protesters decide how to respond if officials didn't meet his demands. That warning prompted the government to send a high-level delegation to meet him. The growing instability is a concern for the United States, which relies on Pakistan to help it fight Islamic militants and stabilize neighboring Afghanistan. Fasih Bokhari, chief of the government's anti-corruption unit called the National Accountability Bureau, told the Supreme Court th ...

Evolution is in no way science. Science is what we can observe, test, or demonstrate. Take gravity: we can't see it, we don't know what it is or how it works. But, we can demonstrate it by dropping any object; we can repeat this over and over or just once and we get the same outcome. We can also test it and figure out correlations like how gravity is related to mass. What part of evolution has ever been observed, tested, or demonstrated? None, this makes it not a part of science, yet it's tax funded! If you have evidence show it to me, if not get it out of schools!
I mean really, how bad of a shot do you have to be to need an assault rifle to protect your home?
I don't understand what the fuss is about. No one is taking away anyone's guns.
23 Executive Orders - For the most part were benign in the impact of the ability for people to own guns but some of which created unfunded liabilities. If only we had a budget to look at to see where to get those funds for. Oh that's right, Senator Reid has failed to allow a budget to even be brought to the floor.
The president is going to be talking about his new gun law proposals in about a half hour. He'll probably be on C-P time, so I'd give it 45 to an hour.
Beware: Universal gun registration was the first step taken in the the UK and Australia on their move to gun seizures.
Obama is due to make an announcement today that is moving towards banning military style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Many people no likey b/c you know, you NEED a machine gun.

Revamping the economy in 2013 and beyond January 15, 2013 by Punch Editorial Board As a new year gets under way, local and global realities compel a rethink of our economic priorities and strategies. Last year closed with the gloomy news that headline inflation had climbed to 12.9 per cent, with a disappointing growth in Gross Domestic Product of 7.3 per cent, while poverty and unemployment are still rampant. President Goodluck Jonathan must move fast to reverse our decline in a world where a creeping slowdown has tasked the ingenuity of national leaders. Since conventional wisdom informs us that you cannot continue to do the same thing and expect different results, the President and his Economic Management Team must take a hard look at their ongoing plans and the priorities set out in the 2013 budget to determine whether they can steer Nigeria out of the woods. Where are we and where should we be heading for? With an estimated GDP of $415 billion (at purchasing power parity) and per capita income of $2,5 ...

The following are 60 facts that prove that the middle class in America is being wiped out… According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the middle class is taking home a smaller share of the overall income pie than has ever been recorded before. As the middle class shrinks, more Americans than ever have been forced to become dependent on the federal government. Federal spending on welfare programs has reached nearly a trillion dollars a year, and that does not even count Social Security or Medicare. Welfare spending is now 16 times larger than when the “war on poverty” began. Median household income in the U.S. has fallen for four consecutive years. Overall, it has declined by over $4000 during that time span. The U.S. economy continues to trade good paying jobs for low paying jobs. 60 percent of the jobs lost during the last recession were mid-wage jobs, but58 percent of the jobs created since then have been low wage jobs. The number of Americans living in poverty has increased by more than 15 million s .. ...

This is what 50 years of Democrats, RINOs and other charismatic narcissists have bought for us with our own money! As the economy has declined, the number of Americans living month to month has soared. At this point, millions upon millions of Americans are living without any financial cushion whatsoever. If you can believe it, one recent survey found that 28 percent of all Americans do not have a single penny saved for emergencies. Another survey found that 42 percent of all American workers are currently living paycheck to paycheck. Thanks to horribly oppressive regulations, red tape and taxes, it is incredibly difficult to run a successful small business in America today. According to the Christian Science Monitor, more than half of all small business owners in America cannot even afford to put food on the table from their small business earnings…. A shocking figure from the Wave survey relates to how well the business owners were able to meet their basic needs through their business. An incredibl ...

CURBING CORRUPTION AND CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS: In some countries today, corruption is gradually been addressed and given the necessary attention since it is generally accepted that corruption undermines progress and unity. Furthermore, it is now a task that must be accomplished if the United Nations Objectives on the Millennium development goals is to have any meaning at all. For example in December 2011, some UK MP's were sent to jail for fiddling with their expenses and others are currently under investigation for corrupt practices. I am one of the few political pundits who believe that if you have strong institutions to address the issue of corruption or make some persons no matter how highly placed as scapegoat, then corruption will be curbed or eradicated in our country. National accountability bureau says 70% of pakistani politicians are tax evaders -
How is it that the president of this united states of america can possibility live with himself.
The screams of terror, the pervading stench of burning flesh, distant lights as shops and homes burn down, the triumphant shouts of looters. People who lived through 1984 in Delhi are unlikely to forget the horrors. After years of inquiries, commissions, accusations and denials, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has, last month, expressed regret for the horrifying anti-Sikh riots that followed the assassination of Indira Gandhi, saying that, "I have no hesitation in apologising not only to the Sikh community but the whole Indian nation because what took place in 1984 is the negation of the concept of nationhood and what is enshrined in our Constitution." After 20 years, it is the first time that an Indian Prime Minister has taken responsibility for these appalling acts of state-sponsored violence. This is all the more remarkable since the Congress Party is deeply implicated in the violence. Congress leaders, including Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, who were blamed for organising the pogrom have resigned fro ...
Pension Reforms: To be, Or Not To Be? By Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai Posted: January 11, 2013 - 00:33 By Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai A few years ago, it was common sight to see aged pensioners struggling – and often dying - in the process of obtaining what was rightfully theirs: their pensions. Due to the chaotic and punitive conditions suffered by these senior citizens who more often than not travelled great distances to Abuja to receive their dues, many simply gave up the ghost – some literally died while standing in queues. Those that persevered were subjected to sleeping on the streets under harsh weather conditions and begging passersby for what to eat. To reward our parents and grandparents who had devoted their lives to serving Nigeria in such cavalier manner speaks volumes about our essence as individuals and collective humanity as a people. Any discourse about the issue of pension reforms in Nigeria must begin with critical questions: What systems were in place for pension administration and how effective ...

What merit? January 20, 2012 | There have been several question marks over the federal government’s handling of the affairs of vital institutions and departments. Be that Pakistan International Airlines, Pakistan Steel Mills, Pakistan Railways, National Insurance Corporation Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, Oil & Gas Development Corporation (OGDC), Federal Investigation Agency or National Accountability Bureau, the Gilani government has been appointing people of its own choice disregarding all norms and traditions. Not only this, the government appears to be unwilling to tolerate any official in important position who is honest and competent and performing his duties efficiently. The latest example is the resignation of acting chairman of Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), Sabir Hussain who accused senior officials of the Authority of creating hurdles in maintaining transparency. Talking to one of The Nation’s correspondents, Mr Sabir bitterly deplored the situation saying that due to indiffer ...

ISLAMABAD, June 9: Before the emergence of a controversy over Dr Arsalan Iftikhar’s alleged deals with Malik Riaz, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had virtually closed cases filed against the real estate magnate, sources said on Saturday. They said that former high-ups of NAB’s regional office in Rawalpindi, which is dealing with the cases of Bahria Town and Mr Riaz, did not start any inquiry on more than a dozen complaints filed against the property tycoon. It has been alleged that some top officials of NAB were appointed due to the enormous influence of Mr Riaz. “It is true that no significant progress was made in the cases of Bahria Town in NAB but in 2010 Bahria Town was stopped from launching its 10th phase,” said NAB spokesman Zafar Iqbal. He said during the past two years NAB’s own condition was so weak financially and administratively that it could not take significant action against Malik Riaz. NAB allegedly flexed its muscles against the Bahria Town chief when he and Dr Arsala ...
