‘To fight MQM, a monster was created by PPP The Pakistan People’s Party made a mess of Lyari to fight the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, creating a “monster” as a consequence, said Dr Nida Kirmani. She claimed the PPP used Lyari to fight the MQM, for which the gangs there were strengthened and, later, they washed their hands of it. Dr Nida, an assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Lahore University of Management Sciences, made these observations after the conclusion of ‘An open dialogue for forcibly migrated youth in Lyari’ at the Karachi Press Club. The event was organised by a Lyari-based youth organisation by the name of Youth for Education, Learning and Leadership. A documentary on the life and livelihood of the impoverished, low-income citizens of Lyari was screened for the audience, mostly comprising young boys and girls of the town, and was followed by an open discussion. The dilemma of MQM and the Pakistan Army.Syed Kamran Hashmi If Mr Hussain continues to lead the organisation, the popularity of the MQM will keep on dropping, and the party that was once able to unite and represent the middle class Urdu speaking community of Pakistan will lose its significance in the political arena Once the BBC has aired the second part of its documentary regarding the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), we can almost confirm that the political career of the self-exiled founder of the party, Altaf Hussain, is almost over. And the likelihood of his recovery from these deep-rooted problems is extremely low. So is the case of General Musharraf. After his arrest warrant has been issued by the special court and his plea to leave the country on medical grounds has been turned down, we can pretty much conclude that he will not be able to evade a personal appearance before it anymore and that he will be indicted on the charge of high treason under Article six of the constitution. In other words, Mr ...

Delusion versus reality Despite the three-month long continuing operation against criminals and terrorists, Karachi remains as dangerous and lawless as ever. Refuse to accept what many of our top government officials want us to believe – that the operation has brought the crime rate down and managed to rein in killers, extortionists, drug peddlers and robbers. Our rulers live in a make-believe world. They wear rose-tinted glasses and feel safe in their bubble. The high walls of official residences, siren-hooting motorcades and empty roads – where no trespassing is allowed when the lords and masters of today’s Pakistan move from one place to another – make everything around them appear hunky-dory. But the rough and tough real world of Karachi’s ordinary citizens is unsafe and treacherous. In this world, killing and being killed by a bullet is far easier than getting an appointment from a doctor at a government health facility or enrolment of your child in school. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (Urdu: متحدہ قومی موومنٹ, English: United National Movement) generally known as MQM, is a liberal[1] political party in Pakistan.[11] The student organization, All Pakistan Muhajir Student Organization (APMSO), was founded in 1978 by Altaf Hussain which subsequently gave birth to the Muhajir Qaumi Movement in 1984.[12] In 1997, the MQM officially removed the term Muhajir (which denotes the party's roots among the country's Urdu-speaking community) from its name, and replaced it with Muttahida ("United"). The MQM is generally known as a party which holds strong mobilizing potential in Karachi, having traditionally been the dominant political force in the city.[13][14] Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is currently the second largest party in Sindh with 37 out of 130 seats and overall the fourth largest party in Pakistan after the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf.[15] Contents 1 Background 2 History 2.1 Founding 3 Late 1986 ...

In London, echoes of Pakistan's deadly press policies By Gypsy Guillén Kaiser/CPJ Director of Advocacy and Communications 19 June 2013, Among the more 200,000 Pakistanis living in London is Altaf Hussain, leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. This powerful political party is widely thought to be behind the murder of reporter Wali Khan Babar, a rising star at Geo TV who was shot dead in Karachi in 2011. His coverage focused on politically sensitive topics such as extortion, targeted killings, electricity thefts, land-grabbing, and riots. Police arrested several suspects affiliated with the MQM, but the investigation into Babar's death fell apart when five people connected to the investigation--witnesses and law enforcement officials--were systematically murdered, one by one. The two original prosecutors were threatened and forced to flee the country. The brutality of the Babar case was highlighted during a discussion in London on Friday of CPJ's special report, Roots of Impunity, which examined the unso ...
Roots of Impunity 1. The Murder of Wali Khan Babar On January 13, 2011, Wali Khan Babar, a 28-year-old correspondent for Geo TV, was driving home after covering another day of gang violence in Karachi. Babar was an unusual face on the airwaves: Popular and handsome, he was a Pashtun from Zhob in Baluchistan near the border with Afghanistan. For Geo, it was a rare boon to have a Pashtun in Karachi, and so the station planned to send him abroad for training to become an anchor. Pashtuns, represented by the Pashtun nationalist Awami National Party, and Muhajirs, represented by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, have been enmeshed in violent attacks and counterattacks at a level not seen since the 1990s, and Babar was passionate about covering and stopping them. For a time, he was able to mingle easily among the competing forces. He reported on clashes, extortion, drug dealing, and land grabbing. He knew he was in treacherous water, but he was optimistic and, as he told one of his colleagues, he thought he could f ...

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain has urged the law enforcement agencies to rein in gangsters
'Remote control' politics of Karachi" This month's elections in Karachi have been marred by accusations against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), whose founder and leader Altaf Hussain lives in exile in London. Reports have circulated that MQM workers threatened people to vote for them, intimidated polling officers, and were involved in violent attacks on the unit offices of other parties. On Saturday night of 19 May, Zahra Shahid, a senior member of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) was shot in front of her home. She belonged to NA 250, a constituency that openly challenged MQM. Imran Khan accused Altaf Hussain of ordering her murder, and the UK government of harbouring him. In London, MQM offices have been searched, and the UK government is investigating these accusations. The BBC has commissioned a film that will investigate this 'London-Karachi' connection. Karachi's violence, focusing on the MQM, is making UK headlines. Addressing the MQM Karachi headquarters on 20th May, in an outburst b ...

PTI KARACHI: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Sindh Assembly candidate Inayat Khattak announced here Friday announced his party's decision to boycott re-polling in Karachi’s PS-128 scheduled for Saturday. The decision, he said, was due to absolute disregard for PTI's demand that re-polling exercise must be undertaken in the entire constituency and not in six selected polling stations. He said the PTI has already submitted before the Election Commission to ensure re-polling for PS-128, and that re-polling must be carried out under the surveillance of the Army. Khattak said his party had also demanded the installation of closed-circuit cameras in the polling stations and the presence of army personnel in polling booths so as to avert any chance of rigging. The provincial assembly’s PS-128 constituency comprises mainly of Karachi’s Quaidabad area. According to the Election Commission’s website, PTI candidate Khattak received 3557 in polling on May 11. Nawaz Sharif elected third-time Prime Minister ISLAMABAD June 05 (APP): The National Assembly on Wednesday elected Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as 27th Prime Minister of Pakistan for the third term, setting a record in Parliamentary history. Nawaz Sharif made his way to the Parliament after a long span of 13 years and eight months when his democratic government was toppled by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999. Nawaz Sharif 63, started his political career in 1980 and served first as finance minister Punjab government and later as provincial chief minister. Earlier, Nawaz Sharif had served as 12th and 14th Prime Minister for two non-consecutive terms from November 1990 to July 1993 and from February 1997 to October 1999 respectively. Political Anaysis: ISLAMABAD: As Nawaz Sharif takes oath as the Prime Minister on Thursday, he will be constantly troubled during his first 21 months in implementing his ambitious legislative agenda in the Senate, which will be controlled by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and its allies till March 2015. However, a silver lining for him in this tough parliamentary milieu is that the PPP’s allies during its five years in government are no more goaded to stand with it and be counted as its partners in the new scenario, which is highly discouraging for all of them. Nawaz Sharif’s track record in government is witness that he aggressively believed in precipitate legislation to resolve nagging national problems. At the same time, he has always been determined for quick disposal of court cases, resulting in severe punishments to the lawbreakers. To satisfy his penchant for speedy justice, Nawaz Sharif has been fond of special courts to adjudicate upon specific categories of heinous cases to purge the so ...

{THE ALL HISTOBackground [edit] Muhajirs were the Urdu-speaking Muslims who migrated to Pakistan when the country emerged independent from British India in 1947. Karachi was then home to a very diverse set of ethnicities including Urdu and Gujarati speaking immigrants, Punjabis, Pashtuns, Sindhis, Baluch and foreigners from several South Asian countries. Muhajirs advanced in both commerce and the bureaucracy but many resented the quota system which facilitated Sindhis in gaining university slots and civil service jobs.[16] It was this very ethnic rivalry that led to Muhajir political mobilizaton, which was further provoked by the stagnant economy and the condition of Biharis in Bangladesh concentration camps.[17] History [edit] Founding [edit] The MQM is the dominant party in Karachi. It was founded in 1984 by Altaf Hussain. At the time of inception, MQM represented only the Muhajir community but after several years, the Muhajir Qaumi Movement changed its name to Muttahida Qaumi Movement, thus welcoming a ...

Founded by: Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Raisani again insists Reko Diq behind his removal, victimisation Murtaza Ali Shah Saturday, January 19, 2013 From Print Edition LONDON: Former Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani has questioned why the governor’s rule has not been imposed in Sindh after the killing of Muttahida Qaumi Movement provincial lawmaker Manzar Imam, who was killed in a suspected sectarian attack on Thursday in broad daylight. Speaking exclusively to The News, Aslam Raisani, who will be arriving in Pakistan shortly, said that Karachi has been under siege for the past several months, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is witnessing total chaos, and Punjab and Gilgit Baltistan are in a state of lawlessness yet there is no governor’s rule which shows that his viewpoint is valid that there were other factors behind his sacking. “How come the decision makers in the centre is oblivious to all the other provinces with complete focus only on Balochistan and its chief minister,” asked Raisani, whose gove ...
After ten days of nearly flat performance, lint prices are slightly steadier due to local spinner demand. Because New York cotton futures prices remain tight or better for the frontal months (2012 / 2013), Pakistani lint prices have also improved marginally. Yarn prices in Pakistan are also tight, also due to lack of utility supplies like gas and power in Punjab to the mills. Thus tight supply of yarns continues to remain in focus. Global cotton prices also continue to remain tight despite selling of cotton by the Chinese due to higher prices charged by the Chinese authorities. A functionary of the MQM (Muttahida Qaumi Movement) who was also a provincial assembly member was reportedly murdered in Karachi in the afternoon whereby the business started to close late in the afternoon. Seedcotton (Kapas / Phutti) prices reportedly ranged from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,800 in both Sindh and Punjab. Lint prices in Sindh were said to have ranged from Rs 5,200 to Rs 6,000 per maund (37.32 kgs), while in the Punjab they rep ...

March of millions threatens Pak govt Imtiaz Ahmad, PTI Karachi, January 02, 2013 An unknown player in Pakistani politics now seems set to unseat the government later this month if his planned 4-million-man march goes ahead. Dr Tahir ul Qadri, who heads the religious organisation Minhaj-ul Quran International, is set to move at least 4 million people to Islamabad on January 14 if the government does not give in to his demands. His threats are being taken seriously by both the government and the opposition. This comes after a political rally in Lahore in December which was attended by one million people. Qadri said that most of these people were his followers in the MQI but there were many others “who genuinely want to change things.” On Tuesday, Qadri found a strong ally in the form of the Karachi-based Muttahida Qaumi Movement party, which has said that it would support the 4-million march with thousands of its supporters. In a rally attended by hundreds of thousands of activists in Karachi on Tuesday ...

RAWALPINDI: A number of political leaders have lamented the Rawalpindi tragedy, in which a suicide bomber killed at least 20 mourners after he blew himself up at a Moharram-ul-Haram procession, Geo News reported. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain in his condemnatory message said that terrorists wanted to undermine the foundations of Pakistan. “These extremists want to destabilize the country. They must be condemned at all forums”, said he. Earlier, condemning the incompetence of the government, he had said that providing security to its people and acting against the enemies of state was the prime duty of rulers, failing which leaves no reason for them to hold onto the helm of the country. Chief Ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also condemned the blast.
If you can't, let Laloo Yadav run the railways: Pakistan lawmaker to government: Islamabad, Nov 16: A Pakistani lawmaker surprised his colleagues on Friday by suggesting that the country's railways should be handed over to former Indian Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav if the government was unable to tackle the state-run entity's numerous problems. Muttahida Qaumi Movement lawmaker Sajid Ahmed made the suggestion in the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament while Parliamentary Secretary for Railways Noman Islam Sheikh was answering questions about the performance of the railways. Yadav is widely credited for guiding the turnaround of the Indian Railways. Pakistan Railways has been plagued by several problems over the past few years, including the lack of locomotives, shortage of spare parts and fuel and the cancellation of dozens of trains due to lack of financial resources. Sheikh said new locomotives would have to be purchased for reviving the railways and making it a profitable organisatio ...

KARACHI, Nov 4: Unfazed by a Taliban threat, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement announced on Sunday that it would hold a referendum across the country on Nov 8 in what appears to be an attempt to unite the nation against the militant organisation. Addressing a press conference, senior MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar said people would be asked in the referendum whether they wanted a Pakistan of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah or of Taliban. Referring to the armed attack on Malala Yousufzai and two other girls in Swat, he said it was unfortunate that terrorists belonging to the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan were carrying out attacks in the name of Islam to stop students, particularly girls, from acquiring knowledge. He said the nation had demonstrated remarkable unity after the attack on Malala, adding that people wanted the spread of knowledge and education, religious tolerance, sectarian harmony and protection of life and property and did not subscribe to distorted ideas and thinking of the Taliban. “The MQ ...

Sindh local govt law intensifies polarisation By: Sohail Sangi The situation in Sindh is grim after the recent passage of the Sindh People’s Local Government Act 2012 by the provincial assembly. Differences over the law have pitted the ruling Pakistan People’s Party against nationalist parties and other opponents of the law in the province. Both supporters and detractors of the new law have tried to demonstrate their political strength by staging public meetings. The PPP – considered the most popular party in Sindh – held a rally in Hyderabad on Oct 15 while the Sindh Bachayo Committee (SBC), a grouping of forces opposed to the local government law, and its component parties also staged similar shows. The law, which envisages six powerful metropolitan corporations, has been reportedly passed to appease the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. It is believed that the MQM, an important ally of the PPP, wanted more powers in Karachi and Hyderabad. However, it has been opposed by many Sindhi leaders who term it ...
