As I prepare for my ninth trip to Guatemala, I’ve been reminiscing about previous visits, including this journey into the exotic forests of the northern territory six years ago…   Frank Zappa once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture.  Akin to that would be trying to describe the aural and visual sensations of an overnight stay at Parque Nacional Tikal in northern Guatemala.  But I shall try. A dozen of us decided to stay in Central America for two additional days on the tail end of our church mission trip.  We had been in the central highlands, at about a mile high altitude for the better part of a week, and, even though it was July, had been enjoying sunny humidity-free days working alongside our new friends at Bethel Student Center in the humble burg of Patzicia.  Populated with tranquil Mayans who are small-of-stature, but huge-in-heart and good will, it was easy to see why this culture has remained sacred for over 2,000 years.  There’s an abiding sense of peace ...

Happy 4th of July to all. Attached are pictures taken at Pine Mountain State Park in KY, a great place to get away from it all.
It’s the Fourth of July, Independence Day! For some it means double-time pay, or extra beach or biking or mountain or park day, for many it will just be a day off to relax, to eat a few hot dogs and watch the fireworks displays, for some it will be a long weekend to get away… the only thing that can spoil the day with family and friends is if it comes with short term memory… without moments of commemoration… without any time of reverence… Independence Day, the reality, has to do with people of great vision and conviction and action. It has to do with an IDEAL of a place for liberty – not the IDEA that we can give place to do whatever we want, whatever comes to mind, as long as it’s tagged with “my personal pursuit of happiness!” The celebration of that kind “freedom,” most recently defined and applied, has brought all kinds of bondage into our world and nation! The liberty our forefather’s envisioned, fought for, died for, lived for was never the freedom to do as we please – it w ...

Tar balls wash up between Destin and PCB By Jim Wallace By Jim Wallace - bio | email Bay County, FL (WALB) – More and more reports of tar balls and oil washing up on the beaches between Destin and Panama City Beach Tuesday. There is the bucket and soap left by the clean up crew for people to wash tar balls off themselves when they come out of the water at St. Andrews State Park. Lots of tar balls were on the beach here yesterday, and they are still in the water now. That's what Chris Wilson found on his swim fin after diving in the kiddy pool. "It's a tar ball. We were out diving and came back in and turned it over and there it is. Stuck, it's like glue. A contract crew from BP cleaned the beach, and people were back in the water again today. Wilson dives these waters every year, and said he sees a big change today, not as much underwater wildlife. "I think it's going to change the gulf for at least my lifetime," Wilson said. Just across the state park, the Florida Nation al Guard is training on all t . ...

This is worth sharing from the National Park Service regarding the tragedy in Yarnell. - Grand Canyon National Park Expresses Deepest Condolences on 19 Firefighter Deaths Grand Canyon, AZ – Grand Canyon National Park and the entire National Park Service join the nation in mourning the tragic loss of 19 firefighters, including 18 elite firefighters from the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew based in Prescott, AZ. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the families and loved ones of the firefighters who lost their lives battling the Yarnell Hill Fire. A small tightknit group, the wildland firefighting community has suffered a devastating loss. Every fire season thousands of men and women place their own lives in danger to protect human life and defend private and public property. The entire National Park Service family sends their deepest condolences to the towns of Yarnell and Prescott, the wildland fire community, and to the families of those who sacrificed their lives. -END-
'Perfect storm' of fire kills 19 Arizona firefighters Reuters Tim Gaynor By Tim Gaynor(...Again, I've deleted any reference to Obama giving condolences cuz it's nothin' but 'Spin Doctor' GARBAGE!!!...) PRESCOTT, Arizona (Reuters) - Nineteen elite Arizona firefighters were killed in a "perfect storm" of wildfire stoked by record heat and high winds in the biggest loss of life battling a U.S. wildland blaze in 80 years, officials said on Monday. The crew, known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots from the Prescott, Arizona, Fire Department was killed on Sunday when the fast-moving wildfire trapped them near Yarnell, a town about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix. "It had to be a perfect storm in order for this to happen. Their situational awareness and their training was at such a high level that it's unimaginable that this has even happened," Prescott Fire Department spokesman Wade Ward told ABC's "Today" program. The blaze is raging unchecked after burning about 8,400 acres of tinder-dry chaparral and grasslands ...
I've been a republican for most of my life; I won’t say all of my life because that would be untrue. Republicanism, for me, has been a process of debating within myself, questioning, rationalizing and trying to understand. Like many other young people of my era, I was thrown into a conflict which was not of my making, and I wish it had never visited me, or my family and friends. The truth is that as a young kid I was totally ignorant of the intolerance, the divisions and the blatant discriminatory nature of the establishment on the Island of Ireland. I didn't know anything about the British presence in Ireland; knew nothing of my countries historical turbulence, I was too interested in playing football in the Falls Park, or roaming the wonderful wilderness which is Black Mountain and Colin Glen Forest. My parents never spoke about politics or division and as I recall those first days of unrest, I remember feeling a sense of unease as I watched the rapid deterioration of events in Belfast and Derry. As President of CAMP, I thought the CAMP members would be interested to know that Ria Story, CAMP secretary, and I will be adopting the CAMP motto "We make things happen!" as we travel to Guatemala to begin cultural transformation of the entire nation 6/10-6/16. In this flashback video, we had to throw in a plug for mountain biking to the international audience. :) We will be joining John Maxwell and 140+ other John Maxwell Team members to train 24,000+ Guatemalan leaders next week. We are passionate about making a difference in our lives, your lives, the people that live in our community, our community, our nation, and other nations. It all begins with us. The same principles apply at all levels. We can complain about it, or do something about it. Just like the CAMP Team is transforming Chewacla State Park! Many before us chose to complain about the park, we chose to transform the park. Has it been a lot of work? Absolutely! Has it been worth it! No doubt! I feel like this would be the perfect time in my life to do just such a thing... there are so many beautiful things out there I want to see, I don't have anything "permanently" keeping me in Michigan. Good Morning! I think I lost thirty pounds in "water weight" over the weekend. It was hot in Baltimore! Still, I had a fantastic time watching the Tigers beat the O's on Saturday at Camden Yards. Sunday...not so great. Okay, the O's can hit too. And the Tigers? They cannot bunt. Oy! In the news today: Did you know you can book a "storm chaser tour?" Yes, there are companies who take you into the storm. As in into the tornado. Crazy, right? Now that three experienced storm chasers were killed...makes you wonder, right? Also: another Congressional hearing into the IRS. Why can't they just investigate the IRS and then release the findings? Oh...never mind. Fires are raging out west -- we'll take you there, too. And did you hear about the Woolly Mammoth? Scientist found blood in a 10-thousand year old, frozen Mammoth. We'll talk about what that means. Hello Jurassic Park! See you and 9 and 10 AM ES.
!! No beautiful place left alone by these Governments are nothing BUT greedy capitalists, trying to secure their future at the cost of the people!
You massacred you Armenians, expelled your Suriani, tried to wipe out your "Mountain Turks" and chased away your Greeks and then you're surprised that your government wants to swat you out for a park? It might be a bit premature to quote "First They Came" but remember nation-states gain power through virulent nationalism and that's not always good for the nations that live in it. As Indians hope we learn. The West has many good things to offer (such as Gisele Bundchen and cat videos) but, as the example of Turkey shows, nationalism is *not* one of them.

Thursday, May 30, 2013 Back | Archive This is what the school board wrote of my friend Bob. I think he would have shrugged off the mentions of his importance..stating it was "all in a days work" or "someone has to do it, may as well be me" and he'd have snickered at some of the references to his personal traits, interests and preferences. Mitt Romney Central What are Governor Mitt Romney's plans for the future? Well, he's busy and it's obvious he still really cares about the state our country is in and about Americans. Romney will rejoin the national dialogue next week by hosting 'The Experts and Enthusiasts Summit', an economic retreat in Deer Valley, Utah (details and video report below). Moreover, this afternoon a headline caught our eye - and we like it: • 'Mitt Romney Plans To Campaign For 2014 Candidates' By Igor Bobic (TPM, 5/30/13) '... Mitt Romney plans to return to the national stage on behalf of candidates stumping for congressional seats in 2014 -- many of whom will run directly against the president's record. "In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Thursday, the former Massachusetts governor disclosed the details of his return: As a first step, the former Republican presidential nominee plans to welcome 200 friends and supporters to a three-day summit next week that he will host at a Utah mountain resort. Had an awesome Stephen King presentation this week at the Westlake Retirement Villages. First time doing a non-library crowd. 45 folks, Average age: 86. Not many read King but more than half were in Colorado at some point in their lives. Was fun helping them spark some memories with my photo shots of Boulder, Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, etc.
Hi friends just got back from a very exciting week at the Leading Age Convention In Denver. Got a chance to hear Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu speak. He was the keynote speaker at our convention. Got a chance to hear about all the cutting edge things that are happening in the health care field. I always come home from these things more energized and excited then ever to create the same type of change but on a grass roots level here at home. I managed to get a chance of a life time, I attended the Obama Rally in City Park in Denver, what an electrifying experience. I even managed to take a car ride with a friend to Estes Park Colorado and tour Rocky Mountain National Park. What a week of growth. Very tired, glad to be back home. I missed Carol, Brianna and Ashley a lot. Take Care.
Driving through the Smokey Mountain National Park at a wopping speed of 25mph with an angry mob following behind us because my husband Scott Jenkins is acting like the crocodile hunter - and I quote "looking for a, KRIKEY! lil' bear"
I took three short trips to Colorado in 2012. In June, Cierra skated at the Broadmoor Open in Colorado Springs. On that trip, we visited the Capitol & City Park in Denver as well as Seven Falls & the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. On Labor Day weekend, Jeff and I went to Estes Park. We visited the Stanley Hotel, saw a John Denver tribute concert, strolled downtown, biked around Lake Estes, and hiked in Rocky Mountain National Park. We stayed two nights at Skyline Cottages and one special night at the charming, historical Baldpate Inn. In October, Cierra competed at Southwestern Regionals in Denver. We got an amazing deal at the 4.5 star Hyatt Place Hotel, where we spent most of our time relaxing, watching movies, and ordering room service. We also went to dinner at Casa Bonita, drove up Lookout Mountain, hiked to St. Mary's Glacier, and strolled Central City.
The Stanley Hotel is in Estes Park, Colorado it is a 138 room hotel which has amazing view of the Rocky Mountain National Park. The Hotel was opened in 1909 by American businessman, Freelan Oscar Stan
Isn't Manitoba supposed to be flat? I thought to myself as I spotted Riding Mountain National Park on the itinerary for the Big Five Safari from Winnipeg to Churchill. Of course, the 'mountain' in question turned out to be more of a hill.

wonderful day with Beth's awesome parents at Rocky Mountain National Park. perfect weather and the hikes were amazing, company was stellar. Love those people!
We are BACK. The "Drive-about 2012" has ended, 3773.3 miles. Had a good trip, no problems except for the fact that my tooth/crown broke off. Saw my sister and family in Nebraska. Was disappointed that we didn't get to camp in the Rocky Mountain National Park because of fires. We absolutely love watching and listening to the elk, but we went "over the top" and got to camp and see some elk there. And...I GOT TO SEE MY MOOSE in Browns'. For years, my bucket list contained the entry "see a moose in the wild." I guess I should have been more specific as I was imagining an emormous bull moose with a six-foot wide rack charging through the willows and bellowing (do they bellow???) as he came. But it was still great seeing the cow chomping on the willows while standing in the river. We saw lots of deer and even made the detour to Meeker CO as usual just to count them in the evening. We SAW some "snow on the mountain" but the most WHITE we saw was in the cotton fields. Most gasoline was just a little c ...

Just witnessed rush hour Rocky Mountain National Park style! Had to wait for seriously about 200 elk to cross the road ad decided which side they were going to be on. Two males kept running them back and forth trying to get the women all to themselves! :) Best kind of rush hour there is!

Having a great time with my daughter Tonie in Estes Park. Visited Rocky Mountain National Park. Beautiful!
We have seen the Country music hall of fame, the Parthenon art museum , the Ryman auditorium , taken a trolley tour of downtown Nashville, taken a dinner cruise on the general Jackson showboat, toured the Hermitage (home if Andrew Jackson), driven to Gaitlinburg where we attended a craft show, toured town, then drove through the Smokey Mountain National Park. We are back in Nashville where we will try to get a good nights rest before flying into Phoenix, Az where we will visit Jan's family and then drive to Sedona, Az and the Grand Canyon! Need I say we are a bit tired tonight but did make it to the outlet mall before we leave town tomorrow :) yes, I know our destinations are in opposite directions! But, we don't ever do things the easy way! Kevin is proving to be a good driver and we think we will keep him on for the next leg of our adventure :)

Fire Update. NEWS RELEASE – Rocky Mountain National Park STATUS OF Fern Lake Fire -- October 12, 2012, 0900 hrs. MDT Estes Park, CO – The Fern Lake Fire, located west of the Fern Lake Trailhead on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park, is showing some smoke early Friday morning, likely due to burning a pocket of trees or deadfall. Fire officials mapped the fire yesterday at 660 acres. This morning, a National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) team assumed command of the fire, which is still uncontained. The local resources that have been staffing the fire are working with the NIMO team. Firefighters today are preparing for a significant change in weather, which includes strong winds and the potential for snowfall. Crews will continue preparing a contingency fire line in the Upper Beaver Meadows area for a potential burnout operation to stop fire spread to the north and east. They will only conduct the burnout if the fire becomes established in the Windy Gap and Beaver Mountain areas. The ...
We are approaching our last weekend for the 2012 season. We have had a great year. I feel we have been blessed once again with good business, great people, wonderful weather, in such a beautiful area that we call home in the summer months, Estes Park, Colorado. The upcoming weekend looks to be a good one. As some of you may be aware, there is a fire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park in the Fern Lake area. Fortunately, we have not been impacted with this unfortunate event occurring in the park. The fire seems to be burning very slowly and away from us. We can see the burn area from Cowpoke Corner Corral's trails on Giant Track Mountain, which offers a great view of the that area. So, anyone wanting a little something extra to talk about, come see us at Cowpoke. We are far enough away at the National Park Gateway Stables that we really aren't affected at at all. We are still seeing lots of wildlife and are anticipating a beautiful weekend. There may be a few showers on Saturday, but that h ...
So sad that Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park) is on fire. Praying they get it under control soon.
Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes! We drove to the Smokey Mountain National Park and then up the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Blowing Rock, NC. Had a fanatiastic time!
Just relaxing in our hotel room, it was a very long drive. We left Mankato at 6pm, drove until one am into Nebraska. We slept at a rest stop for a few hours, then countinued on. Thursday after the competition we will drive to Estes Park which is also part of the Rocky Mountain National Park. featured in NBC s Science of Love
A fire has been burning in Rocky Mountain National Park since yesterday. It is yet to be contained. The winds are not helping. Please say a prayer for containment and safety for the firefighters. Thank you.

The Fern Lake Fire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park since Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 9 is still at approximately 300 acres in size and as of Wednesday morning, was still not contained.
Yesterday, in Estes Park, I witnessed a flock of very large white tailed deer, 30 or 40, of them, flocking the downtown streets, not far from the big Resorvoir. Perhaps they were fleeing the fire, up at Rocky Mountain National Park. But this Calendar Picture, reminds me of the Stanley Hotel. HOME OF THE SHINING. The Stephen King book, and the Jack Nicholson picture. Love this stunning shots of our incredibly beautiful planet. Saturday night, I joined the Saint Andrew's movie group, at the Mayan, and we saw a documentary, full of stunning photography, called SAMSARA. I hope you get a chance to see it. BEAUTIFUL.
The fire in Rocky Mountain National Park is reported to be approaching 400 acres. Crews have been on the ground and in the air since working to get it under control. It is still moving north, however the cool, damp night was reportedly helpful in keeping the overnight spread to a minimum. The Park is still open and Estes Park remains unaffected by the fire. Estes is not in any expected or foreseeable danger. We expect to get official updates from RMNP later this morning or early afternoon.
I want to Thank Brook from Visit Estes Park for keeping all of the business's here in Estes Park up to date on the fire here in Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are a visitor here in Estes and are curious on the fire updates just ask a business and they'll be happy to fill you in Thanks to Brook.
There's a fire at Fern Lake outside of Estes Park and going in to Rocky Mountain National Park. With the wind yesterday it took 300 acres, hopefully there won't be enough wind to spread it further. Really need rain or snow or both!
High wind and low humidity are feeding fires in remote areas of Colorado this week, including a blaze of 300 acres in Rocky Mountain National Park Tuesday about 8 miles west of Estes Park.
Please say a prayer for the little town that two of our stores are located, Estes Park, CO - another fire has started just about 8 miles from downtown in Rocky Mountain National Park. Already over 300 acres in heavily forested area, but no structures are currently in danger. The larger danger is to the firefighters trying to put the fire out, the air support that will attempt to fly tomorrow (conditions were too poor today for air support), and the financial damage that occurs in a little town that is so dependant on tourist support. My thoughts are with everyone there...miss you all.
