Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) was a British surreal comedy group who created Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series.

I just watched a film called 'Holy Flying Circus.' It's about the events following the release of Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' in Britain culminating in the now infamous "debate" in which John Cleese and Michael Palin attempted to explain the film, but the Christian Right chose simply to scold them for being naughty schoolboys making jokes at the back of the class. Still, despite all this negative publicity, 'Life of Brian' was a tremendous success and is now regarded as a classic. By that same token, despite centuries of bad press, the Catholic Church remains the single most successful multinational corporation on Earth. That proves something, but I'm not sure what.

So I score 28 albums on the internet and I go pick them up, not sure of the titles I'm getting. It's a mix of music and comedy albums. When I get them I find a Wayne and Shuster, Col Elliott, Austen Tayshus and a couple of Bob Newhart albums, then I get to two Monty Python albums and a George Carlin live LP from 1972!! Musically I get an Amy Grant album, Seseme Street Fever and a War Movie music hits then find Stevie Nicks Bella Donna, War Of The Worlds ( with the inner book in mint condition!) a couple of Clannard, an Enya, Best of Warren Zevon ( yes it has Werewolves on it ) Peter Gabriel and a double Judas Priest.not to mention Phantom of the Opera, U2 and Poison. What is up with Groundhog Day? I thought it was a decent flick; the movie industry talks about it as if it were "The Godfather" of comedies. My Godfather of Comedies is Monty Python's Holy Grail, but I am a bit of a niche customer.

The other day, Alex was a bit tired of the Harry Potter movies, and was sorting through one of my boxes of DVDs. And pulled out "Monty Python Live", which he proceeded to watch, over & over, for the next 24 hours or so. It has 2 parts, "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" circa 1982, and a special interview from the late 90s hosted by Robert Klein. From scenes in the latter, Alex asked if I have "the movie with the Black Knight", which - of course - I do. So he spent the rest of the day watching Monty Python & the Holy Grail, which he now loves. I'm a very proud father. ;)

Here's this art writer's advice for this weekend: Run, don't walk, to catch either "Twelfth Night" or "Taming of the Shrew" at the U-Mich Power Center. The two are staged by the all-male British ensemble Propeller. In the case of "Shrew," which I saw last night, they delivered a galloping farce full of Monty Python-esque hijinks that was also far darker than most interpretations on the subject of torturing your wife into abject submission. An astonishingly inventive performance. A feast for the eyes and ears. (Music! Lots of it.) Exhilarating. Elbow people out of the way if necessary to get your tickets.

So I was watching "Yellowbeard" last night - for those of you not familiar . It's a pirate story starring Graham Chapman (from Monty Python) - and in one of the cabin scenes the British captain has one of his mates bring in Yellowbeard's wife . and the shipmate is . none other than David Bowie. Also co-starring John Cleese, Eric Idle, Cheech & Chong, Marty Feldman, Madelin Kahn, and Peter Boyle.

The Full Monty (Every time I watch this movie I can still hear my Mom dying with laughter and in turn it makes me laugh harder at it.) 3.Monty Python and The Holy Grail (The Holy Grail of comedies in my book.) 4. The Princess Bride (It’s a classic. I love this film so much and it isn’t even a great film. To me it’s a perfect film because it took the high road where absurdity hides.) 5. Raising Arizona (One of my favorite comedies. There is a scene where Nicholas Cage raises both his fists to attack John Goodman in his trailer home and he scrapes his knuckles on the particle celling. This scene slays me and my brother every single freaking time.)

Warning! Warning! Warning! (See my initial post. It's Friday night, so beware.) I told you I might just turn this into a blog, so now I am a movie critic. I just watched "Seven Psychopaths." My wife abandoned me after 30 minutes but I pressed on. Great movie! But you must like gratuitous violence, quirkiness, irony, and black humor. Luckily, those are my favorites. It's like Tarantino does "Adaptation" based on a screenplay by Joe Orton with input from Monty Python. Great performances! Just keep looking at Colin Farrell's expressions. Have a nice weekend.

As much as I would like to be one of the cool kids and be in love with Downton Abbey I have to confess.it looks like the biggest snooze in the world to me! I think the main problem is I cannot STAND shows or movies where everyone speaks with Britsh accents. I have no idea why but it makes my skin crawl. Now, if its a show and one character has the accent, it's not a problem for me. One hot actor with the accent? Yum. But all of them?? No way. Explains why I can't stand Monty Python. When Absolutely Fabulous was new - I tried - if those gals spoke with a Georgia accent or even a Jersey accent - it would be exactly my cup of tea. Just another of my weird quirks.
