Gutted KP has been forced to retire from cricket! I'm sure to the ECB it makes perfect sense: Go to Australia, get absolutely whipped every game, and effectively taught how to play cricket, come back and announce that in "planning for the future" our best batsman, highest run scorer and the 1 player every team wished they had, is effectively being sacked?! If that's the case, better say thanks for the memories to James Anderson, Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Monty Panesar. (All over 30!)

YUVI STEPS OUT OF HIS FATHER'S SHADOW:When Yuvraj Singh was in his early teens he came home one day with some medals he had won for skating. His father, Yograj Singh, glanced at them and threw them away. The skates were disposed of soon after. You cannot analyse Yuvraj's cricket career without going back to those childhood days, of a cement wicket at home and constant practice under lights. And his father. Yograj Singh played one Test for India at Wellington in 1981, a few months before Yuvraj was born. A volatile character, some say he was unlucky not to have played more. Indian cricket selection in those days was a murky business and Yograj swallowed his grief and threw himself into the world of Punjabi movies, starring in titles like Insaaf (Justice) and Jat Punjab Da (Jat of Punjab). Often a villain on screen, he was also the cricket parent from *** the game's answer to Jim Pierce and Yuri Sharapov. Cricket Martyn Moxon has urged England's selectors to decide where they want Joe Root to bat - and keep him there. Root has opened, batted at six and then three for England, with varying degrees of success. He started the current Ashes series at No 6 but moved up to three when Jonathan Trott flew home. He scored just one 50 before being dropped for the final Test. In the summer Ashes series he opened with skipper Alastair Cook, scoring a brilliant 180 at Lord's. Moxon - Root's director of cricket at Yorkshire - says the selectors have to make up their minds what they want him to be. "He has been moved around a little bit and needs a bit of stability," he told Sky Sports News. "I think they have got to decide where they want him to bat and let him bat in that position, whether that's opening or at six. They need to decide and keep him that position - we've seen what he's capable of. "He's definitely a batsman for the future for England. I think he will learn a lot (from the series). I think every player wi ...

Australia named an unchanged team, which, given injury issues, was a bit of a surprise. Nathan Coulter-Nile was widely expected to replace Ryan Harris but once again had to wait for his test debut. Alex Doolan was named in the squad with hopes of replacing Shane Watson, but didn't get his debut either. And even the long-suffering James Faulkner missed out for the 9th time in 10 tests - 9 lots of 12th man duties! Perennial 12th man anyone? Thank goodness for ODI and T20 matches! At least they were nice enough to let him play a T20 Big Bash league match. And George Bailey was extraordinarily lucky to get a 5th test. For England, reports came in that Monty Panesar was injured, which, like the supposed stress illness to Jonathan Trott and the supposed retirement of Graeme Swann, seemed to be covering up someone who was out of form more than anything else. So Scott Borthwick got to make his debut. Garry Ballance was expected to make his debut too, but at the expense of Michael Carberry with Joe Root going i ...

England's Ashes series has gone from bad to worse, with spinner Monty Panesar straining his calf ahead of the final Test at the SCG. miss the 5th and final Ashes Test LIVE TOMORROW on Channel 9!
Early Morning here in Sydney The Australian press are full of the 5 nil white wash they are convinced will happen. The wicket looks green so I suspect the quickies will be happy, Mitchell Johnson apparently is bristling with delightful. England need to play Rankin in the pace attack. It also looks like Scott Borthwick will get the nod ahead of Monty Panesar, it was only six weeks ago that Borthwick and Brad Haddin were team mates playing for Northern District. Haddin insists he will not go easy on the youngster if he is picked. There has been plenty said about the Aussie attack and how they will decimate England but I am not so sure class completely disappears overnight,so let's hope that England find some grit and determination and make a fist of this last test.

It been said that Monty Panesar has a strained calf and Borthwick will take his spot There's also been word that Boyd Rankin and Gary Ballance could also make their debuts for Tim Bresnan and Michael Carberry respectively
Well, here's the Ashes series from 2006 onwards. Yep, I was awake so why not. 2006-07: Australia came into this series keen to win back the Ashes they'd surrendered at the Oval 15 months prior. England arrived missing their best batsman and captain Michael Vaughan, their first choice opener Marcus Trescothick and their No.1 strike bowler Steve Harmison desperately low on confidence. In the first test Australia won the toss, batted, and Harmison infamously bowled the first delivery to second slip. Hayden, Ponting and Hussey all scored hundreds as Australia racked 600. England's response, apart from Ian Bell, was insipid and they didn't notch 200. Stuart Clark and McGrath having some fun. Despite leading by over 400, Australia batted again, which gave Langer the chance to score a hundred. In their second innings, Bell, Pietersen and Collingwood all showed some fight for England with 50s. IT was hard to believe that the England team who won the toss and notched up 6-551 at Adelaide was the same side who had ...

Monty Panesar singing the english anthem LOL

Let's look at Swann's original statement, shall we? "“It really annoys me when people out there take it for granted and get above their station... it’s the most privileged thing any man can do... some people playing the game at the minute have no idea how far up their own backsides they are. It will bite them on the *** one day and when it does I hope they look back and are embarrassed about how they carry on." Now he's claiming that he's not talking about the English team. I call bullish!t. What make these comments about the opposing team? He doesn't know the ins and outs. Why make this comment about past members of the English cricket team? Surely they don't still have the same hod over him as they once did when they played. Why make this comment about a different sport at your retirement, like Monty Panesar suggested? Seems like an awful waste of your 15 minutes of fame. Poor form, Swann. Poor form. Methinks you were trying to create a diversion so people wouldn't ask why you were leaving ...

The Monty Panesar era is here again!
Sky really don't need the world's biggest television to remind me where Monty Panesar would probably bat
Australia v England, 4th Test, Melbourne Boxing Day passions still running high Big Picture Test cricket's biggest day of the year will carry plenty of significance even though the destiny of the Ashes has been swiftly decided. Australia's march to a 3-0 margin from as many matches caused a major outpouring of joy and relief across the host nation, while England was caught up in a similar level of disbelief, anger and finger-pointing. Having had a few days to get their heads around the fact that the Urn will not be flying north at the end of the series, the combatants now commence a contest that may lose the merest fraction of tension but very little intrigue. If anything the result in Perth means that Melbourne will be focused more strongly on individuals rather than teams - players on both sides will be fighting for validation, vindication and some extra points over opponents they have fought across eight matches and two nations already this year. Australia have shown absolutely no desire to rein themse ...

Good morning, and Merry Christmas to you all. A quick summary of what’s up on the brisbanetimes.com.au homepage at the moment: - Two young boys are missing after being taken by a man in Loganlea last night. Police say the man is known to the boys. - Brisbane’s Anglican archbishop says his thoughts are with young children this Christmas, following what has been a “faith-shaking” year for the church. - NASA astronauts have endured a “mini blizzard” to fix part of the International Space Station during a Christmas Eve spacewalk. - Australia’s batsmen have vowed to go after English spinner Monty Panesar in the Boxing Day Test tomorrow.
ASHES hero Steve Smith is promising England spinner Monty Panesar the same treatment as Graeme Swann despite Australia having the urn in their keeping.
The on-field battle might be over, but the contest rages on in to move out Graeme Swann, perhaps bring in Monty Panesar. Is David Warner's golden run over? Will Mitchell Johnson turn in another blinding spell? Plenty to think about - waiting for Boxing Day
After going through a generation and more with players like Richard Illingworth, Phil Tufnell, Ian Salisbury, Peter Such, Robert Croft, Ashley Giles etc, England found a real world class spinner in Graeme Swann. I feel, it will be another generation before they could find another one. Please Note :- Monty Panesar is not England's next great spinner. He is just Ravindra Jadeja without the knighthood, 3 triple centuries and the fielding brilliance.
Australia batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith vow to attack Monty Panesar's bowling in the fourth Ashes Test.
England call up Scott Borthwick & James Tredwell England have called Durham leg-spinner Scott Borthwick and Kent off-spinner James Tredwell into their Ashes squad following Graeme Swann's retirement. Borthwick, 23, could win his first Test cap on Boxing Day, though slow left-armer Monty Panesar is favourite to replace Swann for that game. Tredwell, 31, has one Test appearance and will not arrive in time to play. Two spinners are unlikely to play in Melbourne, but could feature in the fifth and final encounter in Sydney. England have already surrendered the Ashes after losing the first three Tests. Swann announced his shock retirement on Sunday after taking only seven wickets so far in the series. The 34-year-old former Nottinghamshire player is sixth on the list of England wicket-takers with 255 in 60 Tests. Tredwell took 6-181 in his solitary Test match appearance, in Bangladesh three years ago, but has also played in 24 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20 internationals. He was travelling to Aust ...
The Ashes 2013-14 Panesar favoured for Swann role George Dobell December 23, 2013 Monty Panesar defended Graeme Swann against allegations that he attacked team mates in his farewell media conference It says much for England's reliance upon Graeme Swann for so long that they have reacted to news of his retirement by calling up two men to replace him. The decision to add Scott Borthwick, a leg-spinning all-rounder from Durham, and James Tredwell, the off-spinner from Kent, to the squad also suggests a certain lack of confidence in Monty Panesar. Panesar's left-arm spin may well come into the side for the Melbourne Test starting on Boxing Day, but there are no guarantees about a longer term position in the team. It is not hard to see the differing attractions of Borthwick, Tredwell or Panesar. Borthwick is a talented batsman - he scored 1,000 Championship runs for Durham in the 2013 season having won a promotion to No. 3 in the order - and, as a legspinner, can find turn on pitches on which finger spinners g ...
England offspinner Graeme Swann, who ended his career abruptly, announcing his retirement from international cricket in the middle of the Ashes series, felt Monty Panesar is the man for the job for the remaining two Tests against Australia.
Swann quits all cricket Spinner walks out midway through Ashes series Swann, 34, has had a Commonwealth Bank Ashes series to forget, and revealed Australia clinching the Ashes series with thumping Test victories in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth had played a part in his decision to walk out on the team mid-way through the series. "I know people will be surprised by the suddenness of the decision and the fact that I’m making myself unavailable for the final two Tests of the Ashes series," Swann said. "I’d hoped that, when we walked out for the fifth Test in Sydney on January 3, it would have been with a chance of winning or retaining the Ashes. But that has gone now," Swann was quoted in the Daily Mail. In a statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Swann said: "After a great deal of consideration I have decided to call it a day on my international and first-class career," Swann said. "This decision has been very difficult seeing as the England team has been my family for seven years now ...
Spent the day at the G! Met James Anderson, Johnny Bairstow, Monty Panesar, Matt Prior, Chris Tremlett, Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Johnson, David Warner, Nathan Lyon, Chris Rogers and Steve Smith... and got signatures from all! Day made :D
Stuart Broad may have his knockers, but he came out to bat with an injury to help his country in a test they were almost certain to lose. On the other hand Graham Swan has decided its too hot and too hard so he is going home. Just 4 days before the 4th of 5 tests you have abandoned your team mates, you weak human. Monty Panesar you Christmas gift has come from Graham Swan.
Shame about Graeme Swann retiring. Would he of retired if England were 3-0 up? Think he walked before being dropped. Shame but reopens the door for Monty Panesar.
With swann retiring surely England need to stick with Ben Stokes to compensate for the useless batting ability of Monty panesar
Typical of Swann to desert his colleagues when the going gets tough. Always a selfish player IMO. He should have been disciplined over his rape comments and now wont be. Compare how cricket establishment treated Monty Panesar and how they protected Swann. Wonder why? Also Flowers should have been sacked for the embarrassment this tour has become.
The playing of Graeme Swann in Perth was 1 dumb decision too many for England, as was the leaving out of a bowler whom had claimed a 5-for on the same ground in the corresponding match of the 2006-7 series(i.e. Monty Panesar). Swann's publicly announced retirement came 1 match TOO LATE for team England. Swann's numbers in India & Sharjah(vs Pakistan) in preceding southern hemisphere summers were only made to look good because of Panesar's involvement in the same games.
Cricket Australia are facing possible legal action for defamation from the ground announcer who was stood down for allegedly making racist remarks about Monty Panesar.
Monty Panesar was welcomed to Australia this winter by open racism. I am watching this powerful film by John Pilger that should shame all Australians, and remind us all that the death of Nelson Mandela could easily enable the world to become even less equal and even less interested in justice. Let them keep the Ashes.

Team News: Australia: Word is that Australia are going to make a change, with Ryan Harris injuring his knee while fielding on day 5 of the 3rd test. While the injury is not serious, and he may yet play, the word is that he will be left out for precautionary reasons. Of course, if he is declared fit, then he will play. If he plays, then it is very likely to be an unchanged 11 for the 4th test in a row - a big statement indeed. If he does not, then there are 4 people in line to replace him - 2 fast bowlers (Doug Bollinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile) and 2 spinners (Steve O'Keefe and Xavier Doherty). Melbourne tends to be better for spinners than fast bowlers, but only just, and, all things being equal, 2 spin and 2 pace is usually the best way to go. The problem is that Australia does not really have good spinners to take advantage of the conditions so they may choose to just go with 1 spinner and retain the 3 pace bowlers. Realistically, Doug Bollinger is a huge favourite to play if they go with 3 fast ...
Great win Australia. Even Clarkey's got a beer in his hand. All is right in the cricket world again. Been trying to think of a Pommy player actually born in England. The only one we could come up with was Monty Panesar.
XI: Picking a Team of Cricket's Biggest Dummies Tino Best (West Indies) Fast bowlers, unlike their batting colleagues, have always carried a reputation of being—how shall we phrase this?—not exactly the brightest of individuals, with the Bajan paceman proving a case in point during his country’s tour of England back in 2004. The tourists were heading for a heavy defeat at the home of cricket in the opening Test when Tino came out to bat, with the West Indian then made to look rather foolish by England’s Andrew Flintoff. The big Lancastrian was caught on the stump microphone at Lord’s baiting Best to hit spinner Ashley Giles for a maximum, saying in jest: "Mind the windows, Tino!" However, instead of ignoring Freddie’s jibes and concentrating on trying to save the Test, Best just could not resist, only to be promptly stumped for three. Not clever cricket... Pietersen, bell and prior hang your heads in shame, a batting average as good as monty panesar for this series!!!
Ashes Test series Australia VA England 3d teat (69/2) Australia have won the toss and chosen to bat, Clarke's luck holds in his 100th Test, that's three out of three in the series. "It looks a fantastic wicket," he says, before confirming an unchanged line-up. Hup, hup, Pup. Cook declares it's not the end of the world to bowl first (though it may be when Johnson gets a crack, ooh, around tea tomorrow). Cook was presented with a silver cap before the toss, much like the one Kevin Pietersen got a couple of weeks ago, to mark his 100th. When it comes to a two-horse race, however, silver is second best - and England have several furlongs to make up. Australia 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 George Bailey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Nathan Lyon. what I don't understand is Andy Flower said that 'changes were going to be made' in this test match. Seems their conclusion was that Monty Panesar was the reason they lost so badly. Were they watching the same two tests as me?
the third Ashes Test has started Australia won the toss and are batting first. the only change is Monty Panesar out Tim Bresnan in for england there are no changes for Australia
Australia have WON the toss and will BAT first! Australia are unchanged and Tim Bresnan comes in for England at Monty Panesar's
WACA Test, Aussies have won the toss and are going to bat. Unchanged team for the Aussies, 3 quicks and Lyon the spinner. England have Tim Bresnan in for Monty Panesar. Scott

Andy Flower has said he believes England can fight back against Australia, despite heavy defeats in the first two Tests. England travel to Perth, where the third Test will begin on Friday, trailing 2-0 in the series and in imminent danger of losing the Ashes and Flower, the team director, said his players would have to improve their level of performance. England have never come from two behind to win an Ashes series and, although a draw would be enough for them to retain the urn, their record at the WACA does not inspire confidence, with one Test victory in 12 visits. Flower, however, questioned the suggestion that Australia's desire has so far been greater than England's. "I know that we can fight back into the series, absolutely," Flower said. "We have a history of playing competitive cricket and I know we have a mixture of experienced and young players, but a lot of these players have done some amazing things for England in the recent past, and we are going to have to fight for that to happen again. Our Ella Bella with Monty Panesar at the Ashes flag ceremony. How cool.
England must consider dropping spinners Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar for the third Test in Perth, says Alec Stewart.
Watching cricket in my younger years tail enders could never bat real well , they tried hard but once you got to 7 down the innings closed in the next over or 2. Nowadays teams bat all the way down but does England produce spinners who just can't bat. John Embury , Phil Tuffnell and Monty Panesar rate as the best worst bats pommies send out to bat. Can't wait for the Perth test and watch the soap dodgers dodge, weave and eventually get drilled by a that red ball with 6 stitches on it. Cook, Bell, Peterson you are all going to get your stumps up Rooted!!!
Just a page for the legendary Monty Panesar! S4S Admins = SL, WC, LP, DE
Team for Perth (Mr Flower please note): 1 Alastair Cook - improved captaincy but woeful batting (I'd prefer it the other way round!) 2 Michael Carberry - looks calm and assured and has hopeful played his numpty shot for the series 3 Joe Root - in this spot for years to come; great second innings display 4 Kevin Pietersen - needs to act like he cares but still our most likely game-changer 5 Ian Bell - class act and will hopefully avoid the Smith hoodoo again 6 Ben Stokes - showed a lot of bottle on debut and deserves another go 7 Matt Prior - safe for now (just) 8 Tim Bresnan - need a gutsy bloke with bat and ball 9 Stuart Broad - too brainless with the bat for an all-rounder but handles to sledging well 10 Steven Finn - no point in taking three big guys to carry drinks and he is a proven wicket-taker 11 Monty Panesar - out-bowled Swann here and the bounce at Perth will serve him better. So, a rest for Jimmy so he can bowl us to victory in Melbourne and Sydney and a prolonged net session for Swanny to ge . ...
Second Test Wrap-Up. 2013/14 Commonwealth Bank Series. Second Test Match: Australia v England December 5,6,7,8, 9 2013. Played at: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Toss: Australia (Bat) Team Changes: Australia: No Change England: IN: Ben Stokes, Monty Panesar. OUT: Chris Tremlett, Jonathan Trott. Australia 9/570 dec, & 3/132 dec. Defeated England 172 & 312. Australia won by 218 runs. Umpires: K Dharmasena (Sri Lanka) and M Erasmus (South Africa) The Australians have continued their strong start to the series, winning the second test in Adelaide. A fairly comprehensive performance once again, the Aussies needed only four days and just under an hour on Day 5 to dismantle the visitors. Another all-round performance sees them with a 2-0 series lead, which will be difficult to break, with the third test in Perth just four days away. Michael Clarke won the toss and after some fireworks from David Warner early, he was sent packing for 29, in an opening session that contained three brief rain delays. Chris Rogers was sol ...

Watching Monty Panesar (England's new "Phil Tufnell") doing some catching practice, lol. It's easy when there is no pressure
Mitchell Johnson produced a blood-curdling display of world-class fast bowling to destroy England in the second Test in Adelaide. Johnson's sustained menace bore comparison with the great fast-bowling spells of the modern age as he took 5 for 16 in five overs immediately after lunch to leave England in a state of bewilderment. England lost their last seven wickets for 61 runs in a wholesale collapse as bad as any they suffered during the days when they arrived in Australia as lambs to the slaughter. They will fear that lamb is back on the menu. They conceded a first-innings lead of 398 and with the match barely past its mid-point now face the ever-growing likelihood of going 2-0 down in the five-Test series. And Perth, Johnson's adopted home ground, the fastest, bounciest track in Australia, is up next. With two days remaining, Australia's lead is already 530 runs: more than England have managed in three innings combined in this Ashes series. David Warner's easeful 83 not out dominated a low-key final ses ...
Ball-tampering Series/Tournaments: South Africa tour of United Arab Emirates * Banning bowlers from sweating, generating saliva, and otherwise secreting any kind of bodily fluid that can then be smeared disgustingly upon the ball in the hopes of influencing its behaviour or totally grossing out batsmen. * Continuing to deny Adnan Akmal his curious request for wearing whilst keeping wicket a special, zipper-laden black leather mask he otherwise keeps safely hidden in his bedroom. * No-balling bowlers for non full-tosses. The practice of gratuitously bouncing the ball against an abrasive pitch - and getting it needlessly scuffed up in the process -- before it reaches the batsman, or "bowling", has for long been looked upon with deep suspicion by batsmen, who consider the act a devious form of open sabotage. "Frankly, this has been going on for far too long," said one long-suffering batsman, "and right under our noses, too." * No-balling bowlers regardless of what they do. * A return to underarm bowling. 2013-14 Commonwealth Bank Ashes | 2nd Test | Adelaide Oval | Day 3 | Final Session Australia 9/570 declared & 3/132 | England 172 [68.2] | Australia lead by 530 runs! At STUMPS: David Warner 83* | Steve Smith 23* If the Australians weren’t in control of the 2nd Test at STUMPS yesterday, they well and truly are tonight. A magnificent performance from Mitchell Johnson has loosened England’s grip on the urn quite significantly. 7/40 for the fast left-arm quick, in his best bowling performance since demoralising South Africa at the WACA in 2008/09, and it left England all out for 172 after being 3/111 at one point. Australia got off to a shaky start. They were 2/4 and then 3/65 when Michael Clarke was cleaned bowled by Monty Panesar, but Australia were still well and truly in control of the match. David Warner and Steven Smith have steadied the ship, and Australia went to STUMPS at 3/132, with a lead of 530. Now, it is expected to rain tomorrow after lunch. Look for David Warner, who ...
At the end of day 3 Australia are in bat and lead England by 530 runs. Another very strong performance from the Aussies! Lets hope they keep it up! HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY - Mitchell Johnson taking the last wicket of Monty Panesar and Claiming 7/40 from 17.2 overs! Simply amazing!
Well batted Bell and Carbs. If only the rest had shown the same guts and bravery as them and Monty Panesar, we might not be using words like pathetic and spineless.
Monty Panesar just tried to dance up on my girlfriend
Damning stat Nr 1: What do Cook, Pieterson, Stokes, Prior, Broad, Swann & Anderson all have in common?? None of them batted as well as Monty Panesar!!!
You may have noticed that i have made no mention of the cricket in Adelaide. This is because I am speechless!!! Monty Panesar bats for nearly an hour yet our middle order crumbles like a block of Wensleydale. Hats off to Carberry and Bell but it was mostly pathetic. I haven't heard it but apparently Geoffrey Boycott was apoplectic during the collapse. I knew this Aussie team were not as bad as it appeared but we are making them look like their predecessors from the 1990's. Really poor batting on a decent pitch.
I am a little confused as to the purpose of this site. It's called "FREETHINKERS",and one of it's functions is to provoke discussion.I thought. Do you think that it was in bad taste. * The only response was fr ...
Who'd have thought; England's top three batsmen on form; Bell, Carberry ... And Monty Panesar?
You can't expect to win, retain or remotely compete in an Ashes series if Monty Panesar is your third most disciplined batsman.
Good grief! BBC sport. If you're just waking up... consider yourself lucky you slept through what we've had to watch. Resuming on 35-1 overnight, England were indebted to Michael Carberry (60) and Ian Bell (72 not out) as many of the other batsmen played some rather daft shots, Mitchell Johnson bowled at the speed of light and took 7-40. Only a last-wicket stand of 37 between Bell and a brave Monty Panesar - who was hit several times after facing a rash of (arguably intimidatory) bouncers - stretched the England score to 172 all out. Australia, leading by 398, opted not to enforce the follow-on... and are sitting pretty.
England all out for 172! Johnson picks up his 7th wicket by bowling Monty Panesar! Will Australia enforce the follow-on, I don't recommend it! Come back take the lead from 404 to about 600 and let's England fight it out for a day and a half or about 135 or so overs!
Monty Panesar is much better player than Suresh Raina & comfortable on bouncy pitches.
The definition of pain and disappointment...waking up at 4.10 in the morning with a monstrous hangover, primarily to have a wazz and to peel the tongue from the roof of your pie hole, when you decide to flick on the Ashes and are met with the image of Monty Panesar grinning through the grill of a helmet. Can't wait to see what Sir Geoffrey makes of this. Not good enough.
Watching monty panesar paints lol drying stuff

Australia reach 273-5 on opening day of 2nd Ashes Test ADELAIDE: Stuart Broad took two wickets as England took the honors on Thursday´s opening day of the second Ashes Test, restricting Australia to 273-5 on a docile pitch made for scoring runs. Skipper Michael Clarke, who won the toss and chose to bat, was unbeaten on 48 at stumps, having shared an important 83-run fifth-wicket stand with George Bailey (53) after Australia lost three quick wickets just before tea, negating a strong start which saw the hosts coast to 155-1. Australia´s top-order all made starts but were out to poor shots, except Steve Smith who was bowled by recalled spinner Monty Panesar. England could have been in an even better position but dropped three catches in the last session including Michael Carberry´s sitter off Brad Haddin just before stumps. (AP)
Cricket Australia is embroiled in a new controversy just a week after a PA announcer was stood down over a Monty Panesar joke.
The Second Ashes Test between Australia and England comes from the new-look Adelaide Oval, and the hosts come to the South Australian captain with a 1-0 series lead after their thumping 381-run win at the Gabba. Plenty of water under the bridge since that Test, from Michael Clarke's match fine for his confrontation with James Anderson through to Jonathan Trott leaving the Tour due to stress-related illness, it sets the stage for a mouthwatering second Test. AUSTRALIA HAVE WON THE TOSS AND WILL BAT. Here are the teams that will take the field: AUSTRALIA: Dave Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Steve Smith, George Bailey, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon. ENGLAND: Alastair Cook, Michael Carberry, Joe Root, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Ben Stokes, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Monty Panesar. Play gets underway in about 30 minutes time.
Alastair Cook keeps his cards close to his chest as England wrestle with Monty Panesar ... -
Australian captain Michael Clarke today in a press conference said the team from the first test will be unchanged for tomorrow's second test at Adelaide Oval England captain Alastair Cook did not mention who will be in the side tomorrow for Jonathan Trott. Steve Finn and Boyd Rankin are out of contention from a bad performance in Alice Springs while he did not rule out including a second spinner that in Monty Panesar. Tim Bresnan is available for selection, while Gary Ballance is a like for like for Jonathan Trott The pitch is expected to be flat and slow while it may suit spinners in the later days

Would any of my cricketing pals (or non-cricketing pals, for that matter) care to explain to me exactly how Monty Panesar has been selected for The Ashes tour this winter? How does pissing on a bouncer, getting sacked by his county and being described by Michael Vaughan as mentally unfit merit selection for something so prestigious? There have been some mighty unimpressive selections this summer, but this tops the lot. To represent England in any sport has to have an ethical, as well as sporting, ability - and Panesar clearly doesn't meet either of these criteria this year.
Michael Carberry reaches 114-ball 50 with his 8th four. He then sends the next 2 deliveries from Monty Panesar to the boundary 179-2
England confident Panesar's problems behind him 24 Sep 2013 09:00, London, September 24, 2013 England insisted Monty Panesar's personal problems were behind him as they included the spinner in a 17-man squad for the defence of the Ashes in Australia. Long a fans' favourite for his sheer enthusiasm and undoubted ability to spin the ball, the left-armer found himself making the wrong sort of headlines last month after he was fined by police for urinating on night-club bouncers in Brighton on England's south coast. It was all too much for the 31-year-old's then employers Sussex, who promptly released Panesar, now completing the season on loan at rival county Essex. But the fact remains Panesar is England's second best spinner behind off-break bowler Graeme Swann, a point emphasised by the wretched Test debut of Lancashire left-armer Simon Kerrigan, whose eight wicketless overs in the drawn Ashes finale at The Oval last month cost 53 runs. England national selector Geoff Miller, himself a former Test off-spin ...
Ashes: Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes, Boyd Rankin in England squad Comments (520) England have given Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance a surprise call-up to their Ashes squad to tour Australia this winter.
