The Vancouver Public Library is privileged to have a collection of photographs taken by Mattie Gunterman between 1890 and 1920. For more information see These photographs provide a rich contribution to the cultural heritage of the province of British Columbia, as well as a cornerstone upon which the Vancouver Public Library historical photograph collection is built. The majority of Gunterman's photographs were taken around Beaton, in the Arrow Lakes District of British Columbia, but the collection also includes images of other parts of the Pacific Northwest. Most of the photographs were taken during the twenty years that Mattie, her husband Bill, and their son Henry were together as a family and depict the rich experiences that they shared with one another, as well as with friends who played significant roles in their lives. Mattie Gunterman was born sometime during the spring of 1872 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a waterfront town that became a major boat building centre for Mississippi River packet steamers. ...

Good afternoon from La Crosse! Before we get some more snow on Thursday/Friday we have to get some cold temperatures tonight. Wind chills are going to drop down to around 20 to 25 degrees below zero tonight across portions of southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and western to north central Wisconsin. Snow totals for Thursday into Friday still appear to be in the 3 to 6 inch range. Areas west of the Mississippi River will have the better shot of seeing the 6 inches of snow by Friday.
Today was the longest drive we have done so far (12hrs) - just wanted to get to Minot. La Crosse is a very religious city. We started out by crossing the mighty Mississippi River once more. It was partially frozen but oh so big and mighty. Drove alongside this beautiful river for about 4 miles and then headed towards Minot. The state of Minnesota is corn country - numerous ethenol refineries. Drive overall was really good - sunny and -17 degrees celsius all the way. A little tired but looking forward to Yorkton and spending time with our friends. Have a good weekend everyone!

Journey of Henry David Thoreau and Horace Mann up the Mississippi River - "The 300 mile trip upriver lasted almost three days. After leaving Dubuque, the Itasca headed north, with Iowa on its port side and Wisconsin at starboard. It reached Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, at about 5 p.m. on Friday. About twelve hours later and by the light of a full moon, the ship passed Brownsville, Minnesota, and soon afterward, La Crosse, Wisconsin. The travelers entered Lake Pepin at about 4 p.m. on Saturday and by 7:30 p.m., they were at Red Wing, Minnesota. The Itasca docked at St. Paul in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Young Horace took that opportunity to write to his mother and assure her that they had reached on of their main destinations. 'The two days we had on the river were the most beautiful days we have had this spring, they were very warm and not a bit of wind till late yesterday afternoon when a little breeze came up and sometime in the night it commenced to rain.'"
