Greek Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras told CNN that negotiations were "to a large extent finalized". All discussions with the troika were based on Greece being given two more years to meet its budget targets, he said, adding that no official extension had yet been granted. The basic elements of the agreement will be presented to the euro working group Thursday, and the Greek parliament will begin discussing the measures next week. Talks between Athens and troika officials have dragged on for weeks, held up by opposition among junior members of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' coalition to labor market reforms. Stournaras said there had been progress in that area but more work was needed. "Certain things have changed but we still do not have consent from all coalition parties," he told CNN. By spreading the austerity measures over four years rather than two, Samaras hopes to reduce the risk of further cuts and another downward spiral for the Greek economy.
"Dangerous Deadlock", the newspaper Ta Nea declares today. "The next installation is up in the air after the veto. The leading daily points out that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will likely be forced to forge ahead with a cabinet reshuffle - without the participation of the small Demcoratic Left party lead by Fotis Kouvellis, following the latter's steadfast refusal to accept further reforms in the labour market. -The Guardian

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged her country's continuing support to Greece, during her first visit to Athens since the eurozone crisis erupted nearly three years ago. Mrs Merkel was met by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on arrival in Athens. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said on Tuesday that tough austerity measures across the eurozone were necessary if the currency bloc wanted to contain the debt crisis.
German Chancellor arrives in Athens for talks with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. Snipers placed on roofs. Police on alert. Protests blocked. Merkel will tell Greece what the multi-national banks want to do with their population to increase their profit.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed on Friday as “very positive” the surprise decision by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to come to Athens
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said Friday that his country needs the next block of international aid, warning that Greece cannot manage past November. Telling a German newspaper that “the key is liquidity,” Samaras said that “the next credit tranche is so important for us.” The Greek economy is hanging on by a thread, he said, and it can only last “until the end of November. Then the cash box is empty.” He also suggested various means of helping, saying the European Central Bank could lower interest rates on Greek debt holdings.
Greek ultra-nationalist party Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) is under the political microscope as several government ministers have debated outlawing the party. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has discussed a possible ban but so far appears negative.
Greeks opposed to more wage cuts and austerity staged a general strike today in a first test of the public mood toward budget measures Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said are vital to keep the euro. Schools, hospitals, ferries and government services shut down in the first walkout since February. Shops will close from 3 p.m. to take part in demonstrations. Buses and trolleys are operating from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to allow protesters to attend rallies in the city center. A three-hour walkout by air traffic controllers will disrupt flights around the country. The shutdowns, called to protest the cuts to benefits, wages and pensions that will form the bulk of an 11.5 billion- euro ($14.9 billion) austerity package, comes as speculation swirls anew about Greece’s finances. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Sept. 24 that the financing gap won’t be solved by the savings because a weak economy and delayed asset-sales worsened Greece’s finances. “The strike marks the beg ...
Protests and strikes are gaining steam as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras renews efforts to come up with a tough new €11.5 billion austerity package.
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has reiterated his belief that exiting the euro would be a "catastrophe" for his country. In an interview with the Washington Post, he called again for more time for Greece to implement spending cuts. There are indications creditors are considering giving Greece more time. His comments come as a leading German politician said Germany was unlikely to agree to further help for Greece beyond that which has already been agreed. 'More time' Greece is currently trying to finalise a package of 11.5bn euros ($15.1bn; £9.3bn) of spending cuts over the next two years. The measures are needed to qualify for the next 33.5bn-euro instalment of its second 130bn-euro bailout. Mr Samaras said Greece had to "make sure that we abide by what we have signed because we believe that what they call a 'Grexit' is not an option for us. It would be a catastrophe." However, he did say that Greece would benefit from more time to implement further austerity measures. "Instead of the [cuts package ...

The dollar rose against major global currencies early Monday after bottom fishers snapped up nicely priced greenback positions. The dollar tanked on Friday when the U.S. government reported the economy added far less jobs than expected in August. The Bureau of Labour Statistics reported Friday that the U.S. economy created a net 96,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in August, well below market calls for 125,000 jobs. Under quantitative easing, the Fed buys assets such as Treasury holdings or mortgage-backed securities held by banks, pumping the economy full of fresh liquidity in a way that pushes down interest rates to encourage investing and hiring. Meanwhile, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is due to meet with European and multilateral lending agencies, known collectively as the Troika, later on Monday, which kept investors on edge and snapping up safe-haven positions in the greenback. Samaras recently announced more austerity measures, including further spending cuts to comply with terms attached to bailou ...

Three Thorny Paths to Saving the Euro-The Greek Dilemma 22 August 2012 Will Greece obtain fresh aid or slide into bankruptcy? Those will be the fundamental issues at stake when Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras travels to France and Germany this week for meetings with French President François Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Even though the talks won’t result in official decisions, the two most important politicians in the euro zone will know after these meetings just what they can still expect from Greece — and they will draw the necessary conclusions. For the currency union as a whole, however, the Greek tragedy itself is merely a prelude to the real battle to save the euro. If Greece actually did go bankrupt or left the currency union, the main priority for the rest of the bloc would be to use every means possible to prevent a further dissolution of the euro zone — even if these means have some quite problematic aspects. The key issue will be to prevent the remaining crisis coun ...

Interest rates a little higher this morning with global stock markets improved. The 10 yr at 9:00 at 1.83% +2 bp with 30 yr MBS price down 15 bp frm yesterday’s close. News out of Europe continues to improve with increasing belief that some kind of plan is taking shape, as long as that is the thinking the interest rate markets will find it very difficult to decline while keeping US and global equity markets well supported. Recent improvement in US stock indexes, although on low trading volume, have been rock solid holding improvements. German 10-year bunds fell a second day (price), pushing the yield four basis points higher to 1.55%. There is mounting speculation leaders will make progress on Greece’s debt crisis at meetings this week. Concessions are possible for Greece so long as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras shows a willingness to meet the main targets set out in his country’s bailout program, a senior lawmaker with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party said. Loonie on a Fourth Week of Gains: The Canadian dollar is benefiting from speculations of policy action by foreign central banks. Now on its third consecutive week, the Loonie currency is in its longest streak of gains against its US counterpart. The rise in demand for the medium of exchange with the aquatic bird is fueled by speculation that central banks will take action to bolster economic growth. It is quite ironic that the demand for riskier assets such as the Loonie is sustained, what with the drama in the Euro Zone once more unfolding. Last week, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras admitted that Greece is in a "Great Depression" similar to the American one in the 1930s. Also, Moody's Investors Service changed its outlook for top-rated Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg to negative from stable. The ratings agency, just after a day, did the same for the Euro region’s bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility. Yet, the price hikes are supported by expectations that the Federal Res ...

Barroso in Greece. July 27, 201 The European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso was in Greece to put more pressure on the conservative government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to continue with deep cuts on salaries, welfare benefits and on pensions. Barroso said, “The key word here is, deliver, deliver, deliver.” When one sees Barroso warning the Greeks “must make good on promises to reform”, he appears like a colonial power representing the “Troika” – the EU, IMF and the European Central Bank. It is beyond evident that the absolute majority of the people of Greece are paying a heavy price to a situation that they have never created in the first place. Whether it is in Spain, Greece, Portugal or the U.S. the method is to gallop to protect the banks who have already amassed billions of dollars in profits at the expense of the citizens at large. Total deregulation of the economy had created a situation whereby, the banks were allowed to loot without any oversight of any type. Won’t ...

New Greek PM to outline crisis policy ATHENS: New Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will later Friday outline how his coalition government intends to deal with the country's massive financial crisis, as an inspection of Greece's public finances continues. Samaras, whose conservatives got the most votes in June 17 general elections, will address parliament at 7:00 p.m. (1600 GMT), at the start of a three-day debate that will end in a vote of confidence in his three-party coalition, that has 179 seats in the 300-member assembly. The government admitted Thursday that key elements of its painful economic adjustment program are off track, as meetings continue in Athens with inspectors from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund. Greece is suffering through a fifth year of recession, with unemployment topping 22 percent, around double the eurozone average. The country was "just chasing its tail" and must immediately renounce the harsh austerity terms demanded by its European partners in return for bailout funds, the leader of the opposition told an Economist conference on Monday. "The longer the [memorandum] lasts, the faster the social and economic resilience of the country will be exhausted," Alexis Tsipras underlined, stressing that the country must abandon the programme in collaboration with its EU partners. According to the Syriza leader, an insistence on austerity would push the country into a voluntary exit from the eurozone. "Continuing the bailout's austerity will push our country to voluntarily withdraw from the eurozone," he told the conference. "The most important parts of society, the young scientists, the pioneers of Greece's future, are being pushed to the margins of society and fleeing abroad." He was also harshly critical of the three-party coalition government under Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, which he accused of ensuring that Greece w ...
