Avery Johnson Canned, Phil Jackson On Nets' Radar iven the way the Nets have played lately, something had to change. Avery Johnson learned that the hard way Thursday, when his 2 1/2-year stint with the organization ended when he was relieved as head coach in a meeting with general manager Billy King. "It was a tough decision," King said during a press conference at the team's practice facility. "I've worked well with Avery for 2 1/2 years, but the way we've been playing lately ... in talking with ownership, I spoke to them this morning and the decision was made." King said the decision to fire Johnson, who finished with a 60-116 record in his two-plus years with the Nets, came from ownership. Billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov clearly wasn't happy with the direction the team was headed after committing over $330 million in current and future salaries in order to field a contender in the first season in Brooklyn, and chose to fire his coach who only weeks ago earned the Eastern Conference's Coach of the M ...
Sports: SLUMPING NETS FIRE COACH AVERY JOHNSON. The Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Avery Johnson after a promising season fell apart, the team said today. Winners of 11 of their first 15 games, the Nets went into a tailspin in December, winning only three times in 13 games. "We just didn't have the same fire that we had when we were 11-4," General Manager Billy King told reporters at an afternoon news conference. Much had been expected of the team, which had moved from New Jersey to a sparkling new arena in Brooklyn and spent millions of Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov's money in hopes of rivaling the New York Knicks.
It was Mikhail Prokhorov's call. The Nets owner and his No. 2, Dmitry Razumov, didn't like the way things were going, thought that even the wins were awkward, that after spending a third of a billion dollars, they didn't get what they wanted.
The Brooklyn Nets plan to gauge the interest of Phil Jackson in becoming the team's next head coach, according to a report by Marc Stein of ESPN on Thursday afternoon. Brooklyn relieved Avery Johnson of his head coaching duties on Thursday. The team currently sits in third place in the Atlantic Division with a 14-14 record, which team owner Mikhail Prokhorov is displeased with. The decision to fire Johnson reportedly came directly from Prokhorov and was something that he had been considering throughout December. Citing a source, Stein reports that the Nets plan to engage in a broad search for their next head coach, which will include an inquiry to Jackson's level of interest. Jackson last coached during the 2010-11 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. When the Lakers fired head coach Mike Brown earlier this season, Jackson was one of the candidates the team considered for the vacant position. Los Angeles ultimately hired Mike D'Antoni. Jackson has won 11 NBA Championships as a head coach and has an all-tim ...
