Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (born 2 March 1931) is a former Soviet statesman, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the last head of state of the Soviet Union, having served from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991. He was the only General Secretary in the history of the Soviet Union to have been born during the Communist rule.

Glasnost (Russian, "openness”) was the Soviet policy of open discussion of political and social issues. It was instituted by Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 1980s and began the democratization of the Soviet Union. Ultimately, fundamental changes to the political structure of the Soviet Union occurred: the power of the Communist Party was reduced and multi-candidate elections took place. Glasnost also permitted criticism of government officials and allowed the media freer dissemination of news and information.

Certain members of Russia's parliament are seeking to blame Mikhail Gorbachev for the loss of the Soviet Union.

Great article by my friend Pat... What Would Reagan Do? By Patrick J. Buchanan Friday - April 11, 2014 President Reagan was holding a meeting in the Cabinet Room on March 25, 1985, when Press Secretary Larry Speakes came over to me, as communications director, with a concern. The White House was about to issue a statement on the killing of Major Arthur Nicholson, a U.S. army officer serving in East Germany. Maj. Nicholson had been shot in cold blood by a Russian soldier. Speakes thought the president's statement, "This violence was unjustified," was weak. I agreed. We interrupted the president, who reread the statement, then said go ahead with it. What lay behind this Reagan decision not to express his own and his nation's disgust and anger at this atrocity? Since taking office, Reagan had sought to engage Soviet leaders in negotiations, but, as he told me, "they keep dying on me." Two weeks earlier, on March 10, 1985, Konstantin Chernenko, the third Soviet premier in Reagan's term, had died, and the youn ...

Actually an interesting piece.Russian lawmakers seek to prosecute Mikhail Gorbachev :
I guess the USA is not such a trustworthy Nation either (see article below) .. . . . In that vein, U.S. policymakers and pundits also neglect to mention another inconvenient fact: Then-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev agreed to the reunification of Germany in 1990-91 — and to a united Germany remaining within the U.S.-led NATO alliance — in return for an unqualified commitment from U.S. President George H.W. Bush. That commitment was that the U.S. and NATO would never try to take a former Soviet satellite nation of Central Europe into NATO. The first Bush honored that pledge. But his successor, President Bill Clinton, along with his second secretary of state, the Czech-born Madeleine Albright, did not. In 1997-98, they energetically promoted the integration of every former Warsaw Pact member nation into NATO. From the Russian view, even worse was to come. President George W. Bush, in his Warsaw speech of June 15, 2001, pledged to integrate the three tiny Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estoni ...

What will they think of next?! Russian MPs are demanding to open a criminal case against Mikhail Gorbachev and recognize the collapse of the USSR illegal, and prosecute "Soviet separatists" According to the MP Fedorov, collapse of the USSR was a topic relevant throughout the last 23 years. But now, amid Ukrainian events to raise it is necessary.
Some Russian MPs are calling for the prosecution of Mikhail Gorbachev over the collapse of the Soviet Union. That is ridiculous. He was merely trying to reform the USSR but was ousted in a coup. The drunkard Yeltsin was the one who let it all go to pot. I supposed they could do what Charles II did to the long dead Cromwell, dig Yeltsin up and stick his head on a spike outside the Kremlin.

History repeats itself. I see this morning that some Russians want to charge Mikhail Gorbachev with treason for the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union. The Russians are now in a patriotic frenzy over the annexation of Crimea. This looks a lot like the excitement in Germany when Hitler started his conquests and they blamed the "November Criminals", the German legislators who surrendered to conclude WWI, for all their problems. History repeats because, although circumstances change, people remain essentially the same.

The Art of Inspiration I believe, a man can inspire, not by how his clothes, looks, feels and costs, but on how it all works together- great design is knowing how art works. My influence comes from my training in Graphics, Design and Applied Arts. I have explored communications and presentation styles for Leadership. As a self-taught photographer, I worked with many leaders ranging from President Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev to Shania Twain. My photography has taken me on assignments from Revelstoke, to Key West- I have told stories about rites of passages. Between photography jaunts, I had clothed men at Eaton’s, Grafton & Co, and more recently, at the historic Brooks Brothers- it became apparent that my key skill was to dress men to lead & inspire others. I was entralled by the style of John F. Kennedy. I studied, his speech-writer & counsel, Ted Sorenson, (not GQ), and learnt about communicating, leadership and inspiring. I still study and research the techniques of some of the most powe ...

The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History is a 1978 book by Michael H. Hart, reprinted in 1992 with revisions. It is a ranking of the 100 people who, according to Hart, most influenced human history . The first person on Hart's list is the Prophet of Islam Muhammad, a selection that generated some controversy. Hart asserted that Muhammad was "supremely successful" in both the religious and secular realms. He also believed that Muhammad's role in the development of Islam was far more influential than Jesus' collaboration in the development of Christianity . He attributes the development of Christianity to St. Paul, who played a pivotal role in its dissemination. The 1992 revisions included the demotion of figures associated with Communism, such as Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong, and the introduction of Mikhail Gorbachev . Hart took sides in the Shakespearean authorship issue and substituted Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford for William Shakespeare . Hart also substituted Ni ...

Today I was told: "How can I help you if I cannot help myself?" after I did so much for that person. Well, you can by forcing yourself to put yourself together for people in need of a helping hand. This allows you to do the impossible, enabling you to see the strength you never thought you had, giving you hope to get out of the worst times. All the legends in the world who made our world a better place had problems and yet managed to save our world and make it easier to live life. Best examples: Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Mikhail Gorbachev, William Wilberforce, Nelson Mandela,Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Thomas Jefferson, and lets not forget HELEN KELLER - despite her disability of both deafness and blindness, she learned to read and write, and helped improve the welfare of deaf people. Every Republican likes to think he or she is the next Ronald Reagan. Some who say this do so for lack of their own ideas and agenda. Reagan was a great leader and President. But too often people make him into something he wasn’t in order to serve their own political purposes. Reagan clearly believed in a strong national defense and in "Peace through Strength." He stood up to the Soviet Union, and he led a world that pushed back against Communism. But Reagan also believed in diplomacy and demonstrated a reasoned approach to our nuclear negotiations with the Soviets. Reagan’s shrewd diplomacy would eventually lessen the nuclear arsenals of both countries. Many forget today that Reagan’s decision to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev was harshly criticized by the Republican hawks of his time, some of whom would even call Reagan an “appeaser”. In the Middle East, Reagan strategically pulled back our forces after the tragedy in Lebanon in 1983 that killed 241 Marines, realizing the cost of Ameri ...

The Six Enduring Principles of Reagan's Foreign Policies. Our president needs to read these. He could learn a thing or two. ...or SIX! 1. There is no substitute for American power. Given the imperfections of human nature, great statesmen and decent states can only reduce but never eliminate the danger of war. The anarchy of international politics leads to frequent and severe conflict. In these circumstances, Reagan recognized that vindicating America’s national interest depends on the capability and credibility of American power. Coalitions of the willing can supplement but not substitute for American power. 2. A strong defense is the best deterrent. The greatest dangers to the United States typically do not arise from vigilance or the arrogance of American power, but from unpreparedness or an excessive reluctance to fight. Retreat, retrenchment, and disarmament are historically a recipe for disaster. Consequently, the United States should strive for what Reagan’s hero Winston Churchill called “ove ...

Before it was even known as Crimea, for example, the peninsula was known was "Taurica" by the Greek and Roman empires, both of which at points incorporated the region into their empires. These weren't the only outside forces that dominated Crimea, and at other points in its past it has been invaded or ruled by Gothic tribes, the Kievan Rus' state, the Byzantium empire and the Mongols, among many others. From the mid-1400s it existed as the Crimean Khanate, a protectorate of the Ottoman Empire, during which time it became the center of a roaring slave trade. The modern name "Crimea" seems to have come from the language of the Crimean Tatars, a Turkic ethnic group that emerged during the Crimean Khanate. The Tatars called the peninsula "Qırım." While Russia, which annexed the state in 1783, officially tried to change the name back to Taurica, Crimea was still used informally and eventually reappeared officially in 1917. In "The Tatars of Crimea: Return to the Homeland: Studies and Documents," Edward A. Al ...

Okay I just have to say this and let the chips fall where they may. You see am not democrat or republican I am an independent / libertarian. I think there have been great democratic and republican presidents. Lets name a few of my favorite starting with my number one Ronald Reagan.. but also really liked FDR, John F. Kennedy, George Bush 1, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford just to name a few in the last 75 years or so. See a nice mix... I didn't care for Jimmy Carter, Harry Truman, George W Bush, to name a few. And with President Obama I have been on the fence. He has done a *** of a job with our recovery and I don't want to hear any FOX news BS so and so would have done better. The guy has done a kick *** job on the economy as well as some nifty moves getting us out or Iraq and nailing Bin-jack off. For Robert Tribbie NO AMERICAN WEAKNESS If you’ve listened to President Obama’s critics in recent days, you’ve almost certainly heard two claims. First, that under Obama, America is in retreat around the world. Second, that America’s retreat emboldened Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine. Let’s take the second claim first. Obama’s critics differ as to which moment of White House fecklessness spurred Putin to act. “Ever since the [Obama] administration threw themselves in [Putin’s] arms in Syria … I think he’s seen weakness. These are the consequences,” insists Tennessee Senator Bob Corker. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, by contrast, suggests, “The big one that started this was the absolute retreat on our missile defense system in Poland and Czechoslovakia.” Either way, there’s a causation problem. If it was Obama’s weakness—in the Middle East or Eastern Europe—that encouraged the Russian president to invade Ukraine, then how do Corker and Rogers explain P ...
Putin 'Didn't Create' Crisis, 'Had No Choice but to React' by William Bigelow 2 Mar 2014 On CNN, Fareed Zakaria interviewed Princeton and NYU professor Stephen Cohen about his article in The Nation this week in which he argues that Vladamir Putin is not the "neo-imperialist thug" he is accused of being. Asked about Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine, Cohen said that Putin did not create the crisis and had no choice but to react. Cohen also said that next to Mikhail Gorbachev and possibly Boris Yeltsin, Putin was the least authoritarian Russian ruler in 400 years. The transcript of the interview follows: Zakaria: Steve, you say that this guy is not the rank imperialist and rank dictator we see him as. Explain why he isn’t those things. Cohen: Nor is he, as Secretary Albright and Professor Brzezinski suggested, “Hitler,” with their references to Munich. Putin is not a thug; he’s not a neo-Soviet imperialist who’s trying to recreate the Soviet Union; he’s not even anti-American. What he is is inte ...

Born on March 19, 1950, he grew up in a rural area near Birmingham, Alabama. From an early age, he was motivated by a need for clarity about spiritual matters. The Ukraine Dilemma. Current geopolitical trends in the Ukraine reflects a show of force between President Putin and President Obama on the world stage, to sustain his gravity in the region in light of President Obama's political paralysis on the world stage under prima hiatus. What it translates into, is an upsurge in Putin's clout to regulate the geopolitical and geofiscal dynamics in the Arab world and Europe based on President Obama's dismal ratings internationally among world leaders. It is time for the United States to exit out of the Vatican system code saturated in narcotics, homosexuality, obscurity, mediocrity and ignorance, to usher the world into cohesion out of the current contagion initiated by Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Obama leading to resurgence of the Cold War, to impede President Putin from running for a 3rd term ultimately, reverberating into acute cataclysmic disorders due to dichotomy of homosynthesis. My friend the great Hank Racette has written another post which expresses my own thoughts about a subject better than I can express them myself. Hank, once again, you are absolutely right. Quoting Hank: "I miss Ronald Reagan. I miss George Bush, but I really miss Ronald Reagan. There is a scene from late in Reagan's second term that has stayed with me. It was a moment at the end of a meeting between President Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, but I forget the details of date and location. The video shows him stepping out of a building with the Soviet president and immediately running into the inevitable barrage of journalists and photographers. Perhaps Reagan was already experiencing the effects of his as-yet-undiagnosed Alzheimer's disease. Perhaps he was merely fatigued. In any event, he was visibly rattled by the mob, suddenly paralyzed and, apparently, confused. He appeared, in that moment, old and vulnerable. It lasted for only a few seconds, and then Gorbachev put his arm around our pre ...
Mikhail Gorbachev quotes: Gentlemen, comrades, do not be concerned about all you hear about Glasnost and Perestroika and democracy in the coming years. They are primarily for outward consumption. There will be no significant internal changes in the Soviet Union, other than for cosmetic purposes. Our purpose is to disarm the Americans and let them fall asleep.
Russia's UN ambassador is setting a bizarre precedent. Could the U.S. lawfully occupy parts of Russia if Mikhail Gorbachev requested it?
"We are living in an independent world but we don't know how to live in it." -Mikhail Gorbachev, former USSR president
Conservative realism about the world and Barack Obama’s enabling of our enemies through his foreign policy naiveté, lack of seriousness, and kissy faces with our adversaries was just too much for the foreign and political press in Washington. Barack Obama, their precious, must be protected like Gollum holding onto his ring. Conservatives must be ridiculed. They cannot predict or prophesy anything. After all, Mikhail Gorbachev won us the Cold War; Ronald Reagan just happened to accidentally be on the world stage at the time.
"If suddenly there was a threat to this world from some other species from another planet, we'd forget all the little differences that we have between our two countries and we would find out once and for all that we really are all human beings on this Earth." - Ronald Reagan to Mikhail Gorbachev
Jon Bon Jovi, Mikhail Gorbachev, Dr. Seuss and I all thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes. I'm so grateful to have such caring friends and family!
Glasnost and end of the USSR In 1989 a record 71,000 Soviet Jews were granted exodus from the USSR, of whom only 12,117 immigrated to Israel. At first, American policy treated Soviet Jews were refugees and allowed unlimited numbers to emigrate, but this policy eventually came to an end. As a result, more Jews began moving to Israel, as it was the only country willing to take them unconditionally. In the 1980s, the liberal government of Mikhail Gorbachev allowed unlimited Jewish emigration, and the Soviet Union itself collapsed in 1991. As a result, a mass emigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union took place. Since the 1970s, over 1.1 million Russians of Jewish origin immigrated to Israel, of whom 100,000 emigrated to third countries such as the United States and Canada soon afterward and 240,000 were not considered Jewish under Halakha, but were eligible under the Law of Return due to Jewish ancestry or marriage. Since the adoption of the Jackson–Vanik amendment, over 600,000 Soviet Jews have emig ...

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to address both Houses of Parliament and have tea with The Queen during a symbolic one-day visit to the UK. Mrs Merkel will follow in the footsteps of other leaders, such as Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, in addressing MPs and peers. She will later hold talks with the three main party leaders, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband. Her support is seen as crucial to the success of Mr Cameron's European aims. The prime minister has said that if the Conservatives win the 2015 election, he will seek to renegotiate the terms of the UK's membership of the European Union and put the outcome to an in-out referendum of the British people in 2017. The Guardian reported on Wednesday that Berlin was prepared to offer "limited opt-outs" to the UK over its future compliance with existing EU directives and to make sure some other regulations were more flexibly enforced. RULES FOR RADICALS Notes on Saul Alinsky and Neo-Marxism: Alinsky's tactics were based, not on Stalin's revolutionary violence, but on the Neo-Marxist strategies of Antonio Gramsci, an Italian Communist. Relying on gradualism, infiltration and the dialectic process rather than a bloody revolution, Gramsci's transformational Marxism was so subtle that few even noticed the deliberate changes. Like Alinsky, Mikhail Gorbachev followed Gramsci, not Lenin. In fact, Gramsci aroused Stalins's wrath by suggesting that Lenin's revolutionary plan wouldn't work in the West. Instead the primary assault would be on Biblical absolutes and Christian values, which must be crushed as a social force before the new face of Communism could rise and flourish. Malachi Martin gave us a progress report: "By 1985, the influence of traditional Christian philosophy in the West was weak and negligible. Gramsci's master strategy was now feasible. Humanly speaking, it was no longer too tall an order to strip large majorities of men an ...

According to the hotel's website, Lennon has since been followed to the Queen Elizabeth by other sometime peaceniks, including Nelson Mandela, U.S. president Jimmy Carter, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dalai Lama.

These issues prompted Gorbachev to investigate measures to revive the ailing state. An ineffectual start led to the conclusion that deeper structural changes were necessary and in June 1987 Gorbachev announced an agenda of economic reform called perestroika, or restructuring. Perestroika relaxed the production quota system, allowed private ownership of businesses and paved ...

For Moscow, Ukraine is always ‘Little Russia’ By NINA KRUSCHEVA, ReutersFebruary 23, 2014 4:17pm Ukraine has had two weeks to find a compromise in its Russia versus the West dispute. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been focused on promoting his soft image with the Winter Olympics in Sochi. With the games ending today, Sunday, however, time has run out and the crisis in Kiev and other cities is only getting worse. If Putin uses Russian history as a guide, it would not be out of the question that Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine. After all, Soviet leaders did just this to retain control during the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and the 1968 Prague spring in Czechoslovakia. For Putin stands to lose influence and his ability to affect policy in Ukraine if the opposition gains control. This is at the core of the current Ukraine crisis. Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich disregarded a much-anticipated association agreement with the European Union in November to sign a US$15 billion bailout deal with Ru ...

The events in The Ukraine are momentous, but not simply for what they mean for The Ukraine. They are momentous because of what they mean for Russia. Faced with historic choices between the enlightened Peter the Great and Catherine the Great and their openness to not only the West but to knowledge in its grandest sense including knowledge of where we all are in the grander scheme of life, or those like Ivan the Terrible and Joseph Stalin, with their paranoic insularity and withdrawal from both knowledge and self knowledge, surely the path ahead must be clear. Even Putin must now understand that a recreation of an ersatz second soviet, linked with Belarus and Tajikistan and a subjugated Ukraine is a horrible substitute for joining not only the European Union but the twenty-first century's best hope for Mother Russia, an enlightened vision of its own place in the world. If Putin would but follow not only Peter and Catherine but the third member of Russia's troika of great leaders, Mikhail Gorbachev, he would ...

In the middle of the Bering Strait, between Alaska and Russia, lie two islands. Little Diomede and Big Diomede Island. Big Diomede is sometimes called Tomorrow Island and Little Diomede is sometimes called Yesterday Isle because the International Date Line runs right between the two. Big Diomede is owned by Russia and is the countries easternmost point. Little Diomede is part of Alaska and is Alaska’s westernmost point. Little Diomede is 2.8 square miles and has a small population of 135 people living there. It is 2.4 miles from Big Diomede and its highest point is 1,621 feet. Little Diomede has a heliport where helicopters and bush planes can land to deliver important things to the residents during the winter months. Who Says Flying Saucers are Real? EVERYBODY! The question really should be: "Who says they're NOT real?" It's impossible to find any government official who will flat-out say UFOs or flying saucers are not real. Check out the following quotes. United States President's President John F. Kennedy in 1963 "I'd like to tell the public about the alien situation, but my hands are tied." President John F. Kennedy to Bill Holden, steward on Air Force One flying over Germany, summer 1963 When Holden asked Kennedy what he thought about UFOs. History of the KGB: The KGB Sword and Shield Crest KGB is an acronym for Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti, which translates to Committee for State Security.[i] The KGB is the organization which covered internal security, intelligence, and the secret police in the Soviet Union from 1954 to 1991. The Cheka was first created under Lenin to defend the Bolsheviks and the October Revolution from the White Army. From its start the organization began suppression of counter-revolution activity by using domestic terror and international deception. The group was renamed to the State Political Directorate.[ii] The Soviet Union had a secret police agency from the very beginning, in 1917, and at various levels of power and connection to the central government, survived the whole length of time in which the Soviet Union lasted. By the time it became the KGB, the secret police and intelligence organization of the Soviet Union had helped defend the Bolshevik revolution in 1918 (at that time called the Cheka,) been ...

When the big hand says Thirteen Moon Calendar by Judi McLeod, Canadafreepress.com August 27, 2004 The United Nations, which has a finger in every global pie, and ambitions to take over the World Internet, is inching its way towards calendar reform. Long on lofty words and windy clauses, the official UN description for calendar reform is, "Calendar Reform and the Future of Civilization" (CRFC). Ostensibly, the UN rejected considering calendar reform in 1995 as part of its 50th anniversary. Within four years, UN officials were passing calendar duty over to lifetime activist for peace, Dr. JosÈ Arg¸elles, an originator of Earth Day. Dr. Arguelles’ World Summit on Peace and Time was convened on June 22-27, 1999 at the UN-owned University for Peace, in Costa Rica. Why is the UN itching to change the method by which the world tells time? It’s the Gregorian Calendar. Having replaced the Julian Calendar, the Gregorian was instituted by papal decree in the year AD 1582 and adopted by virtually all nations as ...
Nearly 25 years ago Soviet Union were left with no option but to pull out of Afghanistan in 1989 after being unable to fight the Afghan mujahideen. The unity of Nigeria is negotiable – part 7 FINAL I cannot drag this further as it is imperative to conclude this series. I will not like to draw a long conclusion or an executive summary style of conclusion. What is clear is that all the six regions are viable. I have demonstrated through a case of Australian Meat and livestock industry that our Arewa brothers have nothing to fear. What will make or mar the region’s sustainable development and living standard will depend on the quality of their leadership. If ‘black gold’ crude oil is not useful for Nigeria for decades it might not be useful for the people of south – south if people like Diepreye Alamieyeseigha end up in power. I definitely wish them well, but they should elect good people! By my guesstimate the meat and livestock industry can worth up to $20 billion if a region in the north can work hard to develop the industry to that level. There are a lot of ways they can empower people with calf in rotational ways. With good leadership tha ...

In foreign policy, Reagan sought to achieve "peace through strength." During his two terms he increased defense spending 35 percent, but sought to improve relations with the Soviet Union. In dramatic meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, he negotiated a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range nuclear missiles. Reagan declared war against international terrorism, sending American bombers against Libya after evidence came out that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub. By ordering naval escorts in the Persian Gulf, he maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. In keeping with the Reagan Doctrine, he gave support to anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa. Overall, the Reagan years saw a restoration of prosperity, and the goal of peace through strength seemed to be within grasp. Russia's 'Pivotal Experiment' It's bad enough that the Olympic opening ceremonies in Russia proudly featured the hammer and sickle, but even worse, our own Leftmedia joined in praising Communism. During NBC's coverage, "Game of Thrones" actor Peter Dinklage waxed eloquent: "The towering presence, the empire that ascended to affirm a colossal footprint. The revolution that birthed one of modern history's pivotal experiments." The Bolshevik Revolution resulted in tens of millions of deaths and a nation (not to mention nearly 20 other nations) enslaved to Communism for more than 70 years. That's not a "pivotal experiment." Ronald Reagan didn't stand at the Berlin Wall, erected by the Soviets to keep people in, to tell Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this pivotal experiment." NBC ought to be ashamed.

Black History Nkosi Johnson (born Xolani Nkosi; 4 February 1989 – 1 June 2001) was a South African child with HIV/AIDS, who made a powerful impact on public perceptions of the pandemic and its effects before his death at the age of 12. He was ranked fifth amongst SABC3's Great South Africans. At the time of his death, he was the longest-surviving HIV-positive born child. Nkosi was born to Nonthlanthla Daphne Nkosi in a village near Dannhauser in 1989. He never knew his father. Nkosi was HIV-positive from birth, and was legally adopted by Gail Johnson, a Johannesburg Public Relations practitioner, when his own mother, debilitated by the disease, was no longer able to care for him. The young Nkosi Johnson first came to public attention in 1997, when a primary school in the Johannesburg suburb of Melville refused to accept him as a pupil because of his HIV-positive status. The incident caused a furor at the highest political level—South Africa's Constitution forbids discrimination on the grounds of me ...

by Len Hart Ronald Reagan was already a 'grandfather' figure when he came to office in 1981. It may be unfair to say that he won the election with a single phrase: 'Well.there ya' go again!' In retrospect, it is all that one remembers of Reagan's empty promises and equally empty platitudes! Those and a head nod won him the White House. It is this surface veneer we remember --not his cowardly refusal to assent to Mikhail Gorbachev's offer of complete nuclear disarmament, not his two year long 'depression' which left millions homeless, not the act of 'high treason' called Iran/Contra. Reagan was no friend of the poor, the working class, the cities. On numerous occassions, Reagan would offer up his own version of 'let them eat cake'. Reagan implied that the poor were lazy and welfare recipients 'crazy'. He invented --full cloth --a 'welfare Grandma' who drove a cadillac and had ripped off $150,000 from the government using 80 aliases, 30 addresses, a dozen social security cards and four fictional dead ...

“Ghost Wars: The Secret History of The CIA, Afghanistan, And Bin Laden, From The Soviet Invasion To September 10, 2001” by Steve Coll. 2013 has passed, and with it, two of my greatest heroes, Nelson Mandela (former president of South Africa) and Margaret Thatcher (former prime minister of the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland)). One was both represented minorities who triumphed against overwhelming odds to become leaders who changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister served 3 consecutive terms in office, helped end the Cold War and bring down the Berlin Wall in Germany with Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. She also proved a champion for women in political office, and fought a quick and decisive war in the Falklands to defend the islands and it entirely British population from invasion and dictatorial rule under the former Argentinian dictator Leopoldo Galtieri. And Nelson Mandela fought a peaceful fight against racist and oppressive white British rule, and after serving over 30 years of his life in a political prison camp for protesting, he emerged to lead a peaceful resolution ...

Motherhood by Khalid Baig In April President Clinton gathered an army of former presidents, state governors, city mayors and hundreds of prominent people from all 50 states to address one of the most pressing problems facing America today. He brought former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, to lead this army. Their task: Solve the problem of 15 million young Americans who are considered at-risk youth. "They are at risk of growing up unskilled, unlearned, or, even worse, unloved," said Powell, who was appointed chairman of President's Summit for America's Future. The problem has "the potential to explode our society," he warned. He was not exaggerating. 15 million in a total population of about 60 million youth is a huge number. Mostly they come from dysfunctional families and fall victims to the "pathologies and poisons of the street." Every year 3.4 million of them try drugs. Half a million attempt suicide. A lot of them will drop out of high school and will be functionally illiterate ...
Although voting has not begun, the election is over for two of Montgomery County elected officials. Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts, and Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Grady “Trey” Spikes are unopposed in their bids for reelection. Another election is over for two Montgomery County Justices of the Peace, and they are grateful. Metts and Spikes are up for reelection and the deadline passed without either drawing an opponent. Both judges have deep roots in Montgomery County. Metts is a lifelong East Montgomery County resident, who also raised two children there. He graduated from Splendora High School in 1974 and went on to become a successful businessman and eventually an elected official. Metts unseated the Precinct 4 incumbent judge in 2002, defeated an opponent in 2006, and ran unopposed in his bid for a third term in 2010, just as he will as he approaches his fourth term in 2014. Spikes is continuing his family’s legacy. The last time Precinct 2 had a judge named something besides Sp ...
lets take a historical view of sudden rise of Mr. Arvind kezriwal . It just struck me that one politician Mr. Keziriwal resembles most is Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev , his PEESTROIKA resembles too closely to Mr. Kezriwals brand of policies . Mikhail Gorbachev , also wanted to change USSR and finally played into hands of USA ( some rumours were that he was a CIA agent ) and eventually instead of changing USSR he broke one of most powerful nation . Is our Mr. Kezriwal the new Mikhail Gorbachev , lets ponder inspite of all terror acts and political and diplomatic pressure internal and external India as a union has survived . Is Mr. Arvind Kezeriwal and his AAP the new trick , is AAP ( funded by FORD FOUNDATION ) the final assault on our union , lets not take Mr. Prashant Bhushan and Mr. Sanjay Singh's point of view on Kashmir as a separate view but as common point of AAP . I am of the view its better to have any corrupt party ruling united India than AAP ruling a disintegrated India..
A Cryogenic story: A long ago.Under Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union space agency, had agreed to transfer cryogenic engines and technology to ISRO. But very few countries have access to cryogenics and those who do, guard it zealously. The US, Europe, Japan and China are averse to sharing. The Russians of course made an exception for India. India and the USSR said cryogenic technology was strictly for non military uses. They would only be used for communication and weather satellites. The US did not believe them. Soon after, the Soviet Union disintegrated and the a new government under Boris Yeltsin took control. Yeltsin’s government favoured the West. In 1993 Yeltsin arrived at a compromise after he met Bill Clinton (who had taken over from Bush in January 1993) in the US. Russia would not transfer the technology, but it would sell seven cryogenic engines to India. India decided to fight back — by developing its own cryogenic technology. Over the last 20 years, Indian scientists, most of them at IS ...

Top 10 Most Spoken Languages In The World Language is perhaps the most important function of the human body – it allows us to get sustenance as a child, it allows us to get virtually anything we want as an adult, and it allows us many hours of entertainment through literature, radio, music, and films. This list (in order of least to most spoken) summarizes the most important languages in use today. 10. French Number of speakers: 129 million Often called the most romantic language in the world, French is spoken in tons of countries, including Belgium, Canada, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Haiti. Oh, and France too. We’re actually very lucky that French is so popular, because without it, we might have been stuck with Dutch Toast, Dutch Fries, and Dutch kissing (ew!). To say “hello” in French, say “Bonjour” (bone-JOOR). 9. Malay-Indonesian Number of speakers: 159 million Malay-Indonesian is spoken – surprise – in Malaysia and Indonesia. How the Boomers Saved Everything Yes, we’re spoiled rotten. We’re self-absorbed. And it seems like we’ll never shut up. But the boomers made a better world for everyone else. You’re welcome! How the Boomers Saved Everything The boomers are a generation that changed the world. We're the largest, richest, best-educated generation of Americans, the favored children of a strong, confident and prosperous country. Or, as other generations call us, spoiled brats. Born between 1946 and 1964, the 76 million boomers reaped all the benefits of the postwar period's extraordinary economic growth. We were dizzy with our aspirations. We'd be rock stars. We'd be spiritual avatars. We'd be social activists. We'd be billionaires. No, better yet, we'd be all those things at the same time. (Steve Jobs came close.) Every time opportunity knocked, we let it in, even when it should have been locked out for decency's sake. And behold the boomers' remarkable experiments with prosperity — the dot-com bubble, the housing ...

The Quality of Man which we don't : Iran’s spritual leader is being elevated to sainthood and leader of the worldwide Islamic movement by the Iranian public. In commentaries that reflect the dictates of the Iranian regime, the media for the first time are publishing statements by world officials and others that deify Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The most significant of such statements comes from Vladimir Putin, the former president and current prime minister of Russia. The media outlet Mahramaneh reports that in October 2007, when Putin traveled to Iran, he specifically requested a meeting with Khamenei and came away dazzled. During that meeting, according to the report, Khamenei talked about the history of Russia and what lies ahead, which surprised Putin. Afterward, Iranian diplomats said that Putin’s behavior had changed drastically. When Putin returned to Moscow, a reporter asked what he thought of the Iranian supreme leader. Putin is quoted as saying: “I don’t know much about the Messiah, the Chri ...

learn from history? The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen, mostly composed of two alliances - the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. ... The decade-long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on Dec. 24, 1979, under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on Feb. 15, 1989, under the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or the "Bear Trap"
