![]() Autobiography I was born in 1950 and educated at Stowe School. It was here that I set up Student magazine when I was 16. In 1970 I founded Virgin as a mail order record retailer, and shortly afterwards I opened a record shop in Oxford Street, London. In 1972 we built a recording studio in Oxfordshire where the first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded 'Tubular Bells'. In 1977 we signed the Sex Pistols and we went on to sign many household names from Culture Club to the Rolling Stones, helping to make Virgin Music one of the top six record companies in the world. With around 200 companies in over 30 countries, the Virgin Group has now expanded into leisure, travel, tourism, mobile, broadband, TV, radio, music festivals, finance and health and through Virgin Green Fund we are investing in renewable energy and resource efficiency. In February 2007, we announced the Virgin Earth Challenge - a $25 million prize to encourage a viable technology which will result in the net removal of anthropogenic, atmospher ...

![]() Top 5 Bands - Asked by Lacey Lennon 1. Mike Oldfield - He plays everything. Guitar, Piano, Fiddle, Accordion, Flute, you name it. He writes from many different genres including; orchestral, rock, world, techno/electronic, and generally speaking you could call him "New Age". He wrote his first song when he was 17 years old, and it was a two song album (duration of each song being 20+ minutes). Not only was he extremely young, but his first release would be the title track to the amazing horror movie, "The Exorcist". Tubular Bells, check it out. 2. The Tragically Hip - Not only are they a Canadian Band, but they're one of those bands that I can say I honestly enjoy listening to every single one of their songs. They have a really corky way of expressing themselves lyrically, and Gordy (Lead Singer) sometimes, if not always, has a rant in the middle of the song putting a new twist on rock music as we know it. 3. Joe Bonamassa - What a virtuoso. Played with BB King on stage when he was 12 years old. An incredi ...

![]() In Entertainment Today. Peter Jackson has confirmed that The Hobbit will be released in three parts instead of the planned two. The first is out in December. Tom Hardy has agreed to David Haye’s fight challenge – as long as it’s for charity and “he lets me take my make-up off first”. Mike Oldfield and Underworld are seeing big rises in music sales since the Olympics opening ceremony. Some other artists who played or whose music was used are expected to chart by the weekend.
![]() London Olympic organizers say former Beatle Paul McCartney and other star performers who took part in Friday's opening ceremony essentially donated their time — receiving a mere pound ($1.57) — for their performances. The nominal fee was offered to make the Olympics contracts binding — but pales in comparison to the millions big names like McCartney can command for a stadium gig. Other performers such as Mike Oldfield, Dizzee Rascal and Emeli Sande are also thought to have received the nominal fee. Director Danny Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" extravaganza featured British music that spanned generations, right up to live performances from two of the hottest homegrown acts of the moment: grime star Rascal and the band Arctic Monkeys.

![]() Rock was the central part of the London 2012 Olimpic Ceremony Inaguration. Music from Floyd, The Who, The Stones, Beatles, Led Zep, Queen, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis (who cannot laugh with Mr. Been), Pink Floyd and Sir Paul (Beatles) was the center of everything. Who can deny that rock is a very important part of our culture and British culture and history.
![]() Just saw The Exorcist on stage (with Brooke Shields!) only to come home and see Mike Oldfield performing the theme from The Exorcist at the opening ceremonies. It's just been one of those Exorcisty kind of birthdays, you know the kind.

![]() Mike Oldfield at the opening ceremony, an intro that felt like the Wicker Man and a LOTR set. Such gloom on prime time! Loved it.
![]() Read story, on 5's web site, about the music used in the opening ceremonies. Seems Universal Music will be releasing an album ( I assume cd) of the music, shortly after show ends. I'd get it just to hear Mike Oldfield playing "Tubular Bells" again. It also had an old tradional sailor's hornpipe song ( that Mike plays on his guitar instead of horn pipe) attached to this version. Mike had recorded the song, & released it on 45, in the late 70's or early 80's as a Christmas song.

![]() I have had the opportunity to be present in today’s quiz hosted by Partha Ghatak at YMCA,Kolkata. The quiz definitely was marked by excellent questions (sorry, I couldn’t make myself fully available till the end of the final round). However, sorry to say that the venue seemed quite improper except its location. There was almost chaos because of scarcity of space and many questions were inaudible owing to the poor sound system. I have listened to ‘Tubular Bells’ of Mike Oldfield at least a hundred times which is a favourite musical piece of mine. But, I couldn’t listen to it properly being in the audience and couldn't therefore identify the same. I was then reminded of the excellent venue of Hooghly Zila Parishad where our quizzes take place.
