The Christian Crusades 1095-1291 Since the time of Constantine, Christians had gone on pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Even though Moslems had ruled Jerusalem since 638, Christians were still allowed to visit the city. By the 11th century, however, the situation had changed. Just as the number and frequency of pilgrimages to Jerusalem was at new peaks, the Seljuk Turks took over control of Jerusalem and prevented pilgrimages. The First Crusade Pope Urban II (1088-1099, see art below) was responsible for assisting Emperor Alexus I (1081-1118) of Constantinople in launching the first crusade. He made one of the most influential speeches in the Middle Ages, calling on Christian princes in Europe to go on a crusade to rescue the Holy Land from the Turks. In the speech given at the Council of Clermont in France, on November 27, 1095, he combined the ideas of making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with that of waging a holy war against infidels.1 Dr. E.L. Skip Knox gives a summary of the pope's speech, which has be ...
The Salvation Army has joined the World Evangelical Alliance in calling on Americans to pray for the Middle East. Both groups say Christians are suffering throughout the region and desperately need our prayers and action as they face ongoing violence and death. "The shedding of blood of Christians in our area is going beyond human imagination," Munir Kakish, chairman of the Council of Local Evangelical Churches in the Holy Land, said. "Killing Christians just because they are Christian is not acceptable and should be stopped immediately," Kakish said. Munir, WEA ambassador to the Holy Land, Rev. Harry Tees, and Rev. Charles Kopp, chairman of the Evangelical Alliance of Israel were in Washington this week. They joined CBN News Chief International Correspondent Gary Lane for a roundtable discussion about the causes of the persecution, the role of Christians in the Middle East, and ways to help them. I'm at a loss for words... I just watched a clip of the devastation being wrought in the 'Holy Land'. I watched as a Palestinian family having a picnic at the beach was suddenly & without warning... blow up by an Israeli war ship a few hundred yards off the coast. I saw with my own eyes, an 8 year old girl clutching the blown apart body of her 5 siblings, of her mother & father... & something in her soul shattering screams made my whole being convulse into full-bodied-tears... What kind of a world is this where such atrocities can be conducted in broad daylight & without the full condemnation of the global public?! As a poet I use my words to turn pain into beauty, darkness into light, tragedy into treasure, but how can I convert this imagery into something good? I used to speak throughout the middle east as an ambassador of aloha, below is a video of me doing just that in Palestine on the border with Israel, in a peace gathering that held Palestinians & Israelis, & Germans & others together in the name o ...
The human tragedy going on in the Middle East is being driven by a powerful influence that everyone seems to have forgotten or is loathed to state it for fear of being accused racist/ pro zionist or not showing RESPECT to religious belief. The Elephant in the room... Jewish orthodoxy is kids play compared to the Muslims who are acting on the assumption,, in the knowledge in fact,..that the infidels that they fight, the very people whom their religion does nothing but vilify.. will be deterred by their use of Muslim human shields. There are Muslims who have blown themselves up in crowds of children just to get at American soldiers who are handing out sweets... Committed suicide bombings , only to send another bomber to the hospital to await the casualties, where they then blow up all the injured including the doctors and nurses trying to save their lives. What about ISIS in Iraq? crucifying people at the side of the road... both Christians and Muslims... where is the outrage in the Muslim world over these ...
Sultan Saladin The reign of the Crusaders over the Holy Land was short lived. In less than one hundred years, in fact in 1187, the Crusaders are conquered by Sultan Saladin of Egypt (whose family, by-the-way was employing Maimonides as their physician as we saw earlier). Sultan Saladin beat the Crusaders at what was one of the most important battles in the medieval history of the Middle East ― at the Horns of Hattin, which is northwest of the Sea of Galilee. There Saladin very skillfully managed to lure the Crusaders out into the open. In the middle of the summer and burning heat, they found themselves vastly outmaneuvered and outnumbered, and this is how Saladin destroyed them. Even though they lost Jerusalem, the Crusaders didn't give up. They mounted campaign after campaign to recoup the Holy Land. They never did get Jerusalem back, (although the Moslems did grant them access to Christian holy sites there). Finally, in 1291, the last Crusader stronghold ― in Acco (also known as Acre) ― fell. Pope prays for peace with Israeli and Palestinian presidents VATICAN CITY, June 8 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Pope Francis welcomed the presidents of Israel and Palestine to the Vatican on Sunday evening for an unprecedented meeting of prayer, the “Invocation for Peace.” Joined by the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, the three leaders prayed for peace in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East. “I am profoundly grateful to you for accepting my invitation to come here and to join in imploring from God the gift of peace. It is my hope that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new journey where we seek the things that unite, so as to overcome the things that divide,” said Pope Francis on June 8 in the Vatican gardens. The Pope had issued the invitations on his recent trip to the Holy Land in late May. The presidents quickly accepted the invitation. Presidents Shimon Peres and Mahmoud Abbas arrived separately to meet with Pope Francis individually in the Casa Santa Marta guesthouse. The th ...
Mending Fences? An Open Letter to Pope Francis on the Occasion of His Visit to the Holy Land: Rabbi Audrey R. Korotkin, Temple Beth Israel For Shabbat Naso, May 30, 2014 Dear Holiness: I hope you found your brief pilgrimage beautiful and inspiring. From the windings alleyways of the Old City to the sacred space at Yad Vashem, from the beaches of Tel Aviv to the lush waterfalls of the Banias, I have always found Israel to be an astonishing place. To know that I am walking on cobblestones where my ancient ancestors walked, to feel the cool stones of the Western Wall on my cheek as I pray, always brings me to tears. I hope you felt a little bit of that connection. And I hope you had fun. I hope you did some great people watching, ate good falafel on the street, and played tourist while also playing the role of, you know, leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. Like so many of us in the Jewish community, I have followed your papacy with inspiration and hope. Your embrace of the poor and the needy, your rejec ...

Four challenges for Francis in Holy Land Published: 26 May 2014 Tourists pose in front of posters Four challenges await the Pope in his Middle-East visit, beginning with the situation facing the region’s small Christian minority, writes John Allen in The Boston Globe. ACBC Stirring Hearts (May 21-27) Across the Middle East, Christians have declined from 20 percent of the population in the early 20th century to roughly 4 percent, and that decline is palpable in the Holy Land. The city of Bethlehem in the Palestinian Territories, where Francis will say an open-air Mass on Sunday, was almost entirely Christian a century ago, but today it’s more than two-thirds Muslim. The Catholic patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, warns that the Holy Land, if the trend continues, could become a “spiritual Disneyland” — full of glittering attractions, but empty of flesh-and-blood believers. Though Israel’s Christian population is actually inching up, things are hardly rosy. They’re reeling from a series of att ...

Top Israeli scientist says Ashkenazi Jews came from Khazaria, not Palestine Posted on May 8, 2013 An Israeli geneticist challenges the “Zionist” hypothesis that all Jews belong to one race and are intimately related, thus giving them a common ancestor in the Holy Land and a Biblical claim to Palestine. Scientists usually don’t call each other “liars” and “frauds.” But that’s how Johns Hopkins University post-doctoral researcher Eran Elhaik describes a group of widely respected geneticists, including Harry Ostrer, professor of pathology and genetics at Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine and author of the 2012 book “Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People.” For years now, the findings of Ostrer and several other scientists have stood virtually unchallenged on the genetics of Jews and the story they tell of the common Middle East origins shared by many Jewish populations worldwide. Jews — and Ashkenazim in particular — are indeed one people, Ostrer’s r ...
The topic for today should be the Garden of Gethsemane but my story takes place in the Garden Tomb. Several years ago we had traveled through the Holy Land with our son who had recently finished his two years service as a missionary for our church, (the Mormons), our daughter and her husband.  We love our son in law.  He is a great guy but, for some reason, he enjoys covering his very handsome face with a lot of beard and hair.  Prior to the trip I had told my daughter I wished her husband would cut his hair because I didn't want to travel around the Middle East with a hippie.  He ignored his mother in law as he rightly should.  I'm glad he did because I wouldn't have this story to tell. We were sitting outside the Garden Tomb waiting for our turn to enter.  Inside a group of African tourists had gathered to sing hymns.  They had lovely, rich, African voices, and were able to sing in harmony.  Just as I was thinking this was going to be the highlight of my trip-- Jerusalem, the Garden Tomb with fa ...
The main argument blaming those murderous Christians is based on the deaths of those in the Crusades and the Inquisition. I actually added another situation that can be used as well. Deaths Caused by Christians: 1562-1598 – French Wars of Religion – France – 4 million 1095-1291 – Crusades to the Holy Land – Middle East, Spain, Africa – 1.5 million (This does include all sides of the conflict) 1184-c. 1860 – Various Christian Inquisitions – Europe – 17,500 We’ll round this up (for the sake of liberals) and say 6 million deaths caused by Christians. And that IS a bunch! 6 million is way too many! Now, here is something that even shocked me! I had assumed that the tolls were fairly even. Deaths caused by non-Christians: 184-205 – Yellow Scarves Rebellion (Taoists) – China – 7 million 1300s-1521 – Human Sacrifices (Aztecs) – Mexico – 1 million 1855-1877 – Panthay Rebellion (Muslims) – China – 12 million 1932-1933 – Holodomor (communist atheists) – Ukraine – 10 milli ...

What is the role of American Christians in supporting Middle East churches? Get acquainted, be aware, then pray. If you want to pray for something, then you should be aware of the challenges. Pray and be specific. The Lord wants us to pray after knowing. When you pray about Bethlehem, I want you to pray for the birthplace of Jesus at Bethlehem, which in 1948 was 85 percent Christian. When you sing O Little Town of Bethlehem at Christmas, remember Bethlehem still exists today—the same town. When you come and visit the Holy Land, visit the living stones—the people. It's encouraging to us. Partner and push for peace. Be pro-Jesus. Be pro-peace.

May 13, 2009 Mideast’s Christians Losing Numbers and Sway By ETHAN BRONNER JERUSALEM — Christians used to be a vital force in the Middle East. They dominated Lebanon and filled top jobs in the Palestinian movement. In Egypt, they were wealthy beyond their number. In Iraq, they packed the universities and professions. Across the region, their orientation was a vital link to the West, a counterpoint to prevailing trends. But as Pope Benedict XVI wends his way across the Holy Land this week, he is addressing a dwindling and threatened Christian population driven to emigration by political violence, lack of economic opportunity and the rise of radical Islam. A region that a century ago was 20 percent Christian is about 5 percent today and dropping. Since it was here that Jesus walked and Christianity was born, the papal visit highlights a prospect many consider deeply troubling for the globe’s largest faith, adhered to by a third of humanity — its most powerful and historic shrines could become museum ...

The Christian Exodus Written by Allen West on December 23, 2013 {WHAT 60 MINUTES CONVENIENTLY OMITTED} Many thousands of years ago, Jews made an exodus out of Egypt into the Holy Land. Now it appears there is an exodus of Christians out of that land. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, it is of particular concern to me that Christians may one day no longer be able to celebrate His birth in His birthplace. As Prince Charles recently articulated, there is a purging of Christians in the Middle East. This segment from 60 Minutes attempted to blame the exodus of Christians from Bethlehem on Israeli “occupation.” I would humbly ask you to watch the segment, as former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Michael Oren, calls out reporter Bob Simon for trying to do a hatchet piece on Israel. I hold Ambassador Oren in high regard, and having had a few meetings with him can confirm he tells the truth like none other. Angela and I traveled to the Holy Land of Israel back in August of ...

Yep….I am one of those who does not buy into the whole "global warming/climate change" thing. Do we have records for temps back in the 1800's? 1500's? 300 AD? Etc……..just checking. As world leaders at the UN Climate Summit reached an agreement to tighten the shackles of oppressive global warming regulations late November, God laughed, and his breath touched the place where the Christmas Story began, the Holy Land, painting the Middle East white with snow last week. The same day, the "Arab Spring" region witnessed an Arab Winter, when dusty desert streets were dusted with the first snowfall in 112 years. And last week, Australia's Summer landscape became a Winter Wonderland. Be it hot, cold, or in between, disciples of the pseudo-religion of Global Warmism, will cite these natural temperature fluctuations as proof positive of man-caused climate change. But all is not lost. The Australians have seen the light; their new government was elected in a landslide, running on an anti-global warming, anti ...

“FRANCIS: WAR IS ALWAYS A DEFEAT FOR HUMANITY Vatican City, 7 September 2013 (VIS) – More than a hundred thousand people gathered in St- Peter's Square this evening in response to Pope Francis' appeal during last Sunday's Angelus in which he convoked for today, 7 September, a day of fasting and prayer for peace, in the light of the dramatic circumstances which have engulfed Syria. Since then, this initiative has been welcomed and applauded not only by Catholics and other Christian confessions, but also by those belonging to other religions, from Buddhists to Jews and Muslims, and even those who do not belong to any religion. This week has seen extensive mobilisation on the part of parishes and associations, Caritas and the Community of St. Egidio, prayer groups and religious orders such as the Descalced Carmelites of the Holy Land, mayors and presidents of autonomous regions, organisations for peace, co-operation and development, unions, and so on. Many prominent figures have joined in with the initia ...
Travels in Syria and the Holy Land (Cambridge Library Collection – Travel, Middle East and Asia Minor) Review
Sometimes the story goes like this: The Catholic Church attacked the Holy Land in 1095 and relations between Christians and Muslims have been poisoned ever since. This simplistic interpretation is not only false, it misses the real significance of the Crusades. They reacquainted Europe with her past, helped bring her out of the so-called Dark Ages and mark the beginning of a new era in Western history, the High Middle Ages, which laid the foundation for transforming epochs like the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution. They also led to the thought of one of Catholicism’s greatest philosophers, St. Thomas Aquinas. It is well known in the seventh and eighth centuries Muslim armies swept across the Middle East, North Africa and even into Spain. By 750 AD, this Muslim empire replaced the Roman Empire as the dominant power in this region of the world. But what is less well-know is how the Muslims embraced the Greco-Roman culture they encountered. Conquest brings disparate civilizations together. Specifica . ...
Obama Allies Behead Catholic Priest In Syria John Ransom Obama’s war on the Christian religion, particularly the Catholic variety, has claimed another casualty in the Middle East. The Vatican confirmed that “Syrian priest François Murad was killed in Gassanieh, in northern Syria, in the convent of the Custody of the Holy Land where he had taken refuge.… According to local sources, the monastery where Fr. Murad was staying was attacked by militants linked to the jihadi group Jabhat al-Nusra.” Each of the kneeling men, in turn, is forced to the ground and their head is sawed off with a butcher knife. It’s scene that has become too familiar across the globe. According to sources familiar with Jabhat al-Nusra, they are one of the most violent of the rebel Syrian factions, with roots in the Iraqi civil war, where they fought American soldiers. They are also very successful, controlling large portion of Syria. And, oh yeah, they are part of the Al Qaida network taking orders from Iraq. So why exactly ...
President Obama wrote me back! Dear Reba: Thank you for writing. I have heard from many Americans concerned about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and I appreciate your perspective. I remain committed to a sustained diplomatic effort to promote peace in the region, because achieving a secure and lasting peace is critical not only for Israelis and Palestinians, but also for their neighbors and the United States. Resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict demands our immediate and continued attention. For generations, the conflict has taken a terrible human toll, and continued instability in the Middle East makes us all less safe. We must open a more hopeful chapter in the story of the Holy Land. Through comprehensive and sustained efforts, we can achieve the goal of two states: a Jewish state of Israel and a viable Palestinian state, living side by side in peace and security. This approach requires working with Israelis, Palestinians, and other stakeholders over the long term, and my Administration will d ...
The Templars’ Biggest Secret & the Vatican By Mark Amaru Pinkham KGCTpl for Atlantis Rising Magazine According to one esoteric tradition, after excavating the foundations of Solomon’s Temple for nine years the Templar Knights left the Middle East with five “caskets” or cases that were full of treasures they had collected in the Holy Land. These cases were eventually deposited in Kilwinning, the Mother Lodge of Scottish Freemasonry, before being transported to Roslin Castle, ancient home of the Sinclair Barons of Roslin, where they were kept safe until a fire broke out in the building. The cases were then quickly removed from the castle and very soon afterwards the construction of Rosslyn Chapel officially began. Thus, it appears that the chapel may have been built specifically to hold the five cases. This notion was ostensibly corroborated in the 1990s by Andrew Sinclair, who conducted ground scans at Rosslyn and discovered five rectangular objects or boxes in the crypt underneath the Chapel. Sinc ...
(US Admin) The British perfidy The restoration of the desolate and deserted Land began in the latter half of the XIX century with the arrival of the first Jewish pioneers. Their labours created newer and better conditions and opportunities, which in turn attracted migrants from many parts of the Middle East, mainly Arabs but also Circassians, Kurds and others. The Balfour Declaration of 1917, confirmed by the League of Nations, committed the British government (that took control of the Holy Land after having defeated the Ottoman Turks) to the principle that "His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a Jewish National Home, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object". It was specified both that this area be open to "Jewish settlement" and that the rights of all inhabitants already in the country be preserved and protected. The "Mandate of Palestine" ‒as it was called the British-occupied land‒ originally included all of present-day ...

Just read this, thought I'd share: Another major objection to Christianity is, "Religion is the cause of more problems and wars than anything else." The response: You're right, religion is the cause of many wars and conflicts. * Look at the Middle East today. * Consider the abuses in church history. * The Crusades were the so-called Christian holy wars with Moslems seeking to capture the Holy Land for the "true faith." .* There was the horror of the Inquisition, with so-called heretics burned at the stake and Jews expelled from Spain. * Remember the terror and killing in Northern Ireland, or more recently, look at September 11, 2001...hate smothered with perverted religion. Jesus never taught this. He says to love and forgive your enemies. There has been some bad stuff in religion, but Jesus would never call on Christians to force other people to believe in Him and His word. There is nothing in the Bible that teaches that. That is manmade religion--not Jesus. Yes, a lot of religion stinks. It's caused ton ...

President Peres sang traditional Christmas songs with the local children’s choir from the Christian-Arabic school in I’billin. The State of Israel is committed to protecting all the holy sites and the freedom of worship for everyone. In the Holy Land coexistence between Jews, Christians and Muslims will continue. Via Muslims For Jesus. IS GOD'S PROMISE OF THE LAND TO ISRAEL STILL VALID? On Wednesday 15th August, the South African Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ebrahim Ebrahim said "What we are saying as government is we discourage South Africans from visiting Israel". Defying this call, Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini accepted an invitation to make an official visit to Israel. How should Christians view this debate? Is this just the 'Holy Land' to make pilgrimages to? Or is it an 'apartheid state' we should boycott? Or should we support it as the only stable democracy in the Middle East? Does the Bible have anything to say to us about Israel in the New Testament era? Is modern Israel the Israel of the Bible? Does God's promise to give the land to the descendants of Abraham (Genesis 12:5) still apply in the New Testament era? When I visited Israel in 1995, I was forced to wrestle with these questions and after about two more years of Biblical and historical study came to conclusions I will ...
ÉIRAN VAHEJO'S JUDGEMENT.. The question of the Holy Land divides the World and create tensions that might degenerate into a regional war that can set ablaze the whole Middle East, if not into a global war that would involve the super powers. As a prince of the Éiran Vahejo and as someone who believe in all the different messages sent by the Divine to the Humankind I would like to remind first the Bible and what it said about Jerusalem. Isaiah 45:1 "This is what the LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:Erza 1:2"This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: "'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Jerusalem Prayer Team Unraveling the West Bank Story – Part 1 A best guess is that most Americans know the term “The West Bank”, but few really know anything about it other than “it is occupied” and that the Palestinians are constantly arguing with Israel over it. As the “dumbing-down” of America has continued, it’s even possible that some think that the West Bank is a chain of savings and loans in California. The West Bank is the region of the Holy Land that used to be called Judea and Samaria. If you will recall, David established Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but when the nation split into Israel and Judea, Jerusalem remained the capital of the southern kingdom, or Judea. From the end of World War I until the end of World War II, a large area in the Middle East was under British rule as the British Mandate of Palestine. In 1948, just after the Mandate was divided and a portion was ceded by Great Britain to the Jews to become the State of Israel. Jordan assumed sovereignty over Jud ...
But with this production, Christians in the Holy Land, both Jeffrey Fager, CBS news chairman and executive producer, and Bob Simon, host reporter, have betrayed the values of their profession, and produced a program that is not only severely slanted, but injurious to a country, Israel, that is currently fighting for her survival and that we Americans recognize to be our only trustworthy ally in the Middle East.
Anyone who seriously believes U.S.'s problems with Muslims in the Middle East were caused by Jimmy Carter's failure to send in the Marines the minute that the embassy in Tehran was seized and hostages were taken, or that President Obama is somehow an "appeaser" and that has allowed the protests against the imbecilic anti-Mohammad film to get out of hand really, _really_ needs to read some broader World History. We could start with the Crusades, when the "Christian" nations of Western Europe thought that the Holy Land needed to be "rescued" from the "heathen infidels" -- this at a time when, as Prince Feisal says in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA "in the Arab city of Cordoba were two miles of public lighting in the streets when London was a village" -- but I'd suggest just jumping ahead to the 20th century. Two things: (1) the Sikes-Picot Agreement (also cited in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA) and (2) the fact that right before World War I Winston Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty) and Admiral William Fisher (First Sea Lor ...

By Lynn Gottlieb Am returning from the United Church of Canada's national meeting. I was there to support their Middle East report which, among other things, recommended the boycott of settlement products as part of a campaign to stop settlement expansion. I gave testimony, presented a slide show on the beauty of Palestinian life, the work of Israeli activists who are in accord with the boycott of settlement products, and pictures of the impact of settlement expansion on the life of Palestinians in the West Bank. Below is the letter I was asked to write. Dear Commissioners of the UCC, I have enjoyed spending time with members of the United Church of Canada these past few days.
