Who is Saudi Arabia's new King Salman? (CNN) After the death of King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia quickly announced that one of his younger brothers, Crown Prince Salman, was succeeding him. The man taking control of the world's top oil exporter is well established in the Gulf kingdom's corridors of power. Salman, 79, is "a stalwart of the royal family" who is "viewed as a pragmatic and cautious reformer, much like his predecessor," says CNN's Becky Anderson in Abu Dhabi. He has served as defense minister and deputy prime minister of Saudi Arabia, a vital U.S. ally in the Middle East, for years. Like Abdullah, he's one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdulaziz. Here are some of the key points about the new ruler. 1: He's an experienced leader Salman was governor of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for nearly five decades during a period of significant change. "When he became governor in 1963, Riyadh had 200,000 inhabitants — today it has more than seven million," Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow ...

I'm moving to the Middle East next weekend to work in the city of Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia. I didn't post anything about it over the last year because I wanted to wait until all the details were finalized. For the first year or so I'll spend quite a few months in Abu Dhabi in the UAE completing a lot of training. I'm going to be a Field Engineer in the oil & gas industry there, working for a "western" company called Schlumberger. I'm very excited to work overseas! Sure, I'd have rather gotten an assignment in Australia or Brazil or Scotland ... but any international assignment right out of school is extremely rare. The truth is, I've always wanted to spend some time in the Middle East. Everyone says "Wow, I'd love to visit Dubai!" and I finally get the chance to! But beyond the well-publicized Dubai, there are many beautiful skylines and landscapes all around that region. Also, there will be more opportunities to move across continents. To my environmentally conscious friends: Please put me out of work! ...
TODAY'S BEEF: where to get a good cup of coffee [sorry Dareen Nassar - you started me off on this rampage]. I mean across the entire Middle East, in a "region" known because of its hospitality and the offer as coffee, I still cannot seem to find a cup of the elusive black gold. Sure I can cross the border into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and I will find barrels of black gold in the middle of sand dunes, but alas this is not the type of black gold I seek, nor one that can replace my morning substitute, granulated nescafe gold [which is about the most consistent coffee I find]. I have tried coffee in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras al Khamieh, Ajman, Fujariah, Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain - even here in Jordan and I cannot find a decent brew. I go to a half assed Concession Stand at Town Hall station in Sydney and I can get a good cup of Joe but even in Emirates Palace Hotel, where they charge up to $90 for a cup with gold dust [and trust me, I tried that coffee, it tastes like something they diver ...

With Tosi at Verona's Metef in the Arab transport game And all that was lacking was that Alitalia should become an asset of the Emirates. The transport game between Italy and the East couldn't be more interesting. Companies such as Maire Tecnimont and Saipem are building the railway in the desert near Abu Dhabi. Months ago Rizzani De Eccher completed 200 km of railroad in Algeria and Pizzarotti opened the tramway of Constantine, in Algeria. Only at this point do we understand that Italy confronts the large Arab market – 17 nations, 450 million inhabitants – with its transport technology. On June 13th at Verona's Metef, Flavio Tosi, the Mayor of Verona, opened the convention dedicated to exchange with the Arab World. The event dedicated to the world of metals, was promoted at Fieraverona by various agencies including Assomet, the Confindustria of nonferrous metals, which this year reported on the results in the Middle East. And perhaps Tosi is also mindful of the fact that his Verona is the most impo . ...

Etihad Aiways no longer interested in ticket-sales by US travel agents? By eTN Managing Editor Created 1 Jun 2014 - 7:43am UAE based Etihad Airways CEO Jame Hogan confirmed to eTN on May 9 at a press conference in Abu Dhabi: "Standard commission is paid to travel agents for ticket sales on Etihad." Less than a month later this policy is no longer applying to travel agencies, tour opertors or travel agents based in the United States of America. With Etihad expanding non-stop service from Abu Dhabi to Los Angeles later this month. With Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates as the only airport in the Middle East having US immigration and customs pre-clearing facilities, and with Etihad launching a new enhanced first class product on their Airbus 380 including on the Abu Dhabi - Washington flight - cutting commission to nothing for ticket sales by US travel agent sales is surprising. Even more surprising and a little scary is Etihad emailing an announcement to US travel agents on Saturday May 31 for implement ...

Abu Dhabi gains prominence as significant business travel hub Abu Dhabi has over the years evolved as a prominent business travel hub in the world. It is among the two Middle East cities that were placed in the Top 100 rankings as the busiest destinations for conferences and business meetings. Dubai was the other city in the Gulf which also made it to the top 100. The annual rankings were published by the International Congress and Convention Association in 2012. Abu Dhabi successfully hosted 22 association meetings in 2012 as compared to only 8 in 2011. The city’s profile has grown phenomenally and it is now placed alongside major meetings destinations like Cologne, Las Vegas, Perth, Brasilia and Atlanta. Recent statistics indicated that Abu Dhabi is fast growing as a significant hub for taking connecting flights. This also amply demonstrates that the business travel segment in the city is getting busier by the day. Media reports said that the UAE national carrier Etihad Airways has expanded its globa ...
IPL’s credibility needs rebuilding Sun, Apr 13, 2014 09:24 IST In three days, it’ll be time for some off-shore cricket action as the Indian Premier League begins in the United Arab Emirates. By all accounts, the excitement over masala club cricket coming to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah is high. This has been vouched for by Sunil Gavaskar, BCCI president for the IPL, as well.At a time when the general elections in India are in full swing and voters are turning out in large numbers across several states, the hardcore IPL fan does feel a bit dejected that the first leg of the tournament is not being held at home. Yet, to be fair to the Indian government, it has done well to allow the return of the IPL after a fortnight in the UAE. Even as the teams stepped up their preparations before leaving for the Middle East, the Supreme Court also kept the IPL in the news. As far as players, coaches, team management and franchises are concerned, they would do well to realise that the seventh edition of the IPL is un ...

Still in Development: A Film Culture in Dubai DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — When the heiress Paris Hilton traveled here in June and July to audition female friends for her show “My New BFF,” her producers had access to state-of-the-art studios and a government eager to import a touch of Hollywood glamour to the Middle East. But to adhere to the region’s Islamic norms, many of the ingredients in reality TV were taboo: there would be no drinking, no cursing, no dramatic displays of affection. The producers thought about filming a scene at a water park, but passed on the option of dressing the contestants in religiously appropriate swimwear. dubaipost.info Dubai, its rival Abu Dhabi and other Persian Gulf cities face enormous hurdles as they try to diversify their economies by fostering creativity and becoming entertainment capitals. Chief among those hurdles: they operate under Islamic law. Hollywood does not. So far, the oil-rich countries have proved more able to pay for fancy media productions an ...

El Gouna: Egypt builds MENA’s first carbon-neutral city Posted on February 16, 2014 by Laurie Balbo in Cities with 0 Comments- See more at: a resort city on Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera, is set to become the first carbon-neutral city in that nation, in Africa, and likely the entire Middle East North Africa (MENA) region. Masdar City, in continuing development in Abu Dhabi, initially targeted zero-carbon status, but has yet to hit that goal. The new Etihad Cargo Boeing 747-8F has received an amazing response from plane spotters around the world, with a huge number of photos appearing online in recent weeks. To be honest, that’s not a huge surprise… for a couple of reasons! First, the wide-body aircraft is very photogenic and provides a stunning canvas for the Etihad livery. Second, its currently being deployed on a round-the-world scheduled routine in conjunction with Atlas Air, covering locations such as Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Chicago, Miami, Viracopos, Quito and Amsterdam… so there’s plenty of opportunities for plane spotters to take their snaps. And since this particular aircraft has been receiving so much attention, here’s a cool time-lapse video that shows the Etihad Cargo Boeing 747-8F being painted! “Etihad Cargo is reinforcing its position as a global operator with the entry into service of this round-the-world routing, touching the Middle East, Asia Pacific, the Americas and Europe,” commented Kevin Knight, Chief Strateg ...

Funding for private healthcare projects in UAE often limited to established players As healthcare needs continue to diversify, investors look towards medical tourism to increase revenue As the delivery of healthcare in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region continues to evolve, the real estate and operational needs of healthcare providers becomes increasingly complex. Middle East At its summit meeting in Abu Dhabi, the Gulf Cooperation Council strongly condemned the Babri Mosque demolition. It adopted a resolution which described the act as a "crime against Muslim holy places." Among its member states, Saudi Arabia severely condemned the act. The United Arab Emirates, home to large expatriate communities of Indians and Pakistanis, conveyed a more moderate reaction. In response, the Indian government criticized the GCC for what it regarded as interference in its internal affairs.[citation needed]

Dubai-based Emirates led the buying spree on Sunday with an order for 150 of Boeing's new 777 mini-jumbo, in a deal worth $76 billion at list prices. It also ordered 50 Airbus A380s, the world's biggest passenger plane, worth $23 billion. With demand from other Gulf carriers including Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, Boeing announced commitments for a total of 259 of the new 777 ...

The World of Formula 1 Still based largely in Europe, Asia and Latin America have discovered the sport in recent years. Yet even while countries like Bahrain and Malaysia have picked up the event, F1 Grand Prix tickets and F1 merchandise items are hardly the money makers they once were in the United States. Here's an introduction to the world of Formula One racing. The F1 circuit is typically eighteen races, with about half the races in Europe. In the sport's early years almost all the events were in the UK or on the Continent, with a single event typically reserved for the US' legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the State of Indiana. As the major centers for both F1 drivers and constructors, the UK, Germany and Italy are regular European hosts. In recent years the sport has grown in popularity in the Middle East and much of Asia-India has a constructor team and is regularly on the circuit, so too Abu Dhabi and especially Turkey. In East Asia, the peninsula home to Malaysia and Singapore is to be fou ...

Although not being one of the current top water polo countries in the world, that doesn't mean things are running slow in the United Arab Emirates. In fact, the federation is working hard and the game in the Middle East shows promising signs of development. Not only with a couple of national youth leagues but also in encouraging local schools to participate in the sport by including the sport in their programs and setting up school teams for U14 and U12 age categories that will form a national youth school league. But there's more; an Emirates Cup (Final Four) tournament for the best four national youth teams in each category to play for the championship and an International Aquatics Festival in April, 2014 with coaching clinics from the legendary Croatian former head coach Ratko Rudic. Most of it staged in the mighty Hamdan Sports Complex, holding one of the most impressive swimming pools in the world in a facility that can accomodate up to 15,000 spectators. As icing on the cake for enthousiasts from th ...

One of the most charismatic frontman around, Liam Gallagher left his Oasis days behind him as new band Beady Eye made their live performance in front of thousands roaring fans in Abu Dhabi. The FLASH Forum, Yas Island was houseful with as many as thousand footfalls. Rock fans all across the capital and Middle East seized every ticket available for their debut performance. And they left the forum wanting for more. Liam Gallagher proves why he is the ‘greatest frontman of all time’. Beady Eye’s show was ballsy rock and roll from start to finish. The exotic eastern-influenced ‘Four Letter Word’ showed off Liam’s fantastic voice and guitarist Andy Bell’s skill. Beady Eye's every note was equally punctuated with the dancing crowd. Fans couldn't have asked for more. Peter Redding who lives in Dubai said, "I’ve been to every FLASH gig, they are all brilliant. To see Liam Gallagher live is a dream come true".
This is long overdue. A culmination of writing during my first week of induction into Schlumberger. As of now, I am in my last month of 14 week PEPTEC-0 & 1 (Open Hole) Wireline Field Engineer training school in MLC, Abu Dhabi. School has been intensive but it has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.     Monday, 11 March, 201312:38 AM   I touched down at Abu Dhabi airport at quarter to 1am together with my friend Muhil. Though I have transited in Doha before, it felt like the first time arriving in the Middle East. Greeted by custom officers in the full head to toe robes as uniforms, men in white dishdasha and women in black abaya, it suddenly dawned upon me that this was the start of my journey as a Schlumberger employee. A half hour long bus ride took me to the Middle East Learning Centre (MLC), a purpose built Schlumberger facility. It was, by then, already close to 7 am in Malaysia, 4 hours ahead of United Arab Emirates (UAE). Snooze.   Reporting time was 8.15 am for induction and the start of ...
Colombian Mercenaries Get An Unwelcome Compliment Since September 11, 2001, countries with well trained and experienced combat personnel have had to face growing problems with private security companies serving corporate or national (especially in the Middle East and South America) employers recruiting their best troops. Colombia is the latest to complain, as an American security company, forming a special “counter-terrorism” force for the Persian Gulf state of Abu Dhabi recruited several hundred of their most experienced army and special operations troops. Recently retired veterans of the Colombian security forces were also sought. The chief attraction was the money, which was about five times what they were making in Colombia. This (up to $3,000 a month or more) was still cheaper than what Western troops with similar experience were asking. This was not a critical loss, as the Colombian armed forces now contain over 400,000 personnel. But it was annoying, legal, and will probably happen again. Over ...

Middle Eastern investors lose trillions, affect sovereign wealth funds Sovereign wealth funds that have been able to invest in securities as well as real estate in North America have lost trillions of dollars due to the global economic crisis. “The global financial meltdown has cost countries in the Middle East $2.5 trillion over the past four months and led to a 60 percent drop in development projects in the region being put off or scrapped,” the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Sabah Al Salem, who also serves as the acting oil minister, has said. “The stark reality is that with oil prices having tumbled 75 percent from a July high as the global economy sank into recession, budgets are severely strained.” The loss of the $2.5 trillion does not include the decrease in market value incurred by the sovereign wealth funds, many of which have invested heavily in commercial real estate in North America. A report by the Council of Foreign Relations estimates that a fund held by Abu Dhabi, the la ...
Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Marine Services has won three new contracts in the Middle East. The company’s anchor handling tug supply vessel Atlas has begun work on a 21-month charter with a UAE-based OPCO. The client will use the vessel in rig support operations. One of the K-class self-propelled self-elevating jackup barges has secured a term contract with an international oil company operating in the Middle East valued at US$11 million. Commencement is expected towards the end of the year and a multi-phase workover and reinjection operation is planned to be completed from the unit. Another K-class jackup, Kudeta, has commenced a large scale accommodation role with China Offshore Oil Engineering Corporation, having undergone an expansion of her living quarters to support 236 people. The unit is mobilising for Saudi Arabian waters in support of the client’s ongoing offshore construction and refurbishment campaign.
Middle East is new global travel crossroads DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — It's 1 a.m. and the sprawling airport in this desert city is bustling. Enough languages fill the air to make a United Nations translator's head spin. Thousands of fliers arrive every hour from China, Australia, India and nearly everywhere else on the planet. Few venture outside the terminal, which spans the length of 24 football fields. They come instead to catch connecting flights to somewhere else. If it weren't for three ambitious and rapidly expanding government-owned airlines — Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways — they might have never come to the Middle East. For generations, international fliers have stopped over in London, Paris and Amsterdam. Now, they increasingly switch planes in Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi, making this region the new crossroads of global travel. The switch is driven by both the airports and airlines, all backed by governments that see aviation as the way to make their countries b ...
An inbox message I received from a Muslimah who lived in Saudi Arabia for many years and is now residing in Abu Dhabi. What is it with South African women married to Arab men? I know of quite a few of them having resided in the Middle East for almost 25 years now. Why do these women become so arrogant and unsociable? They act as though they are Arab and far superior than the rest of us. At the end of the day they will never be Arab. A girl I knew from Durban married an Arab man. When she lived in South Africa she was warm and welcoming. We use to hang out together a lot. Now in the Middle East she acts as though she is the cat's whiskers. I need to make an appointment to meet her and when we do meet she is only bragging about her rich in laws, the vacations abroad and her Filipino maids. Why can't these women be proudly South African? Shouldn't we all be proud of our heritage and background?
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will increase capacity on its daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Melbourne, introducing a new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from 1 December. The three-class, 328-seat Boeing 777 will replace the current Airbus A340 fleet, delivering 252 more seats per week – a 12.3 per cent increase – between the capital of the State of Victoria and the capital of the UAE. The service upgrade was announced in Abu Dhabi by James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, at a business dinner hosted by the Victorian Government and attended by 400 people. “Melbourne is one of the best-performing routes in our global network, and has the highest passenger load factor of our three Australian destinations,” said Mr Hogan. “Victorians are not only flying with Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi, an emerging business and leisure destination, but also on to destinations in the Gulf region, Middle East, Europe and Africa.”
SOUTHWEST ASIA SO-CALLED ‘THE MIDDLE EAST’: The Middle East is mostly desert, with high arid mountains to the north. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the west, and towards the south are the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. The fertile land between the Tigris and the Euphrates is the site of the world’s oldest civilisation. Christianity, Judaism and Islam arose in the Middle East. The Rub Al Khali (‘empty quarter’) in Saudi Arabia is the LARGEST sand desert in the world, with dunes as high as 150 metres. This region is scorchingly hot in summer (I have witnessed a 50 degrees centigrade temperature in Abu Dhabi, UAE around the year 2000). The coastal areas are humid and, in the north, the mountains are snow-capped. Oranges, grapefruit, melons, pomegranate and vegetables are grown along the Mediterranean. Date palm trees grow in the oases and places which have some water. The date palm tree has large, feathery leaves and sweet, brown fruits, called dates; each has a hard seed. The date is a ...

25 February 2013 New US secretary of state John Kerry is to hold talks with David Cameron on his first foreign visit. Mr Kerry is due in Downing Street on the initial stop of an 11-day "listening tour" that will also take him to Berlin, Paris, Rome, Ankara, Cairo, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha. The conflict in Syria, nuclear stand-off with Iran and Middle East peace process are expected to be high on the agenda. But the Falklands is also likely to come up - with Washington under pressure to recognise the result of a referendum next month on whether the islanders want to remain British. Mr Kerry, who arrived on Sunday night, will hold a press conference with Foreign Secretary William Hague in London.

Vandana Luthra: An Excellent Lady Profile of Vandana Luthra Not too many entrepreneurs can be said to be embodiments of their enterprise. But Vandana Luthra of New Delhi is certainly one. She is slim and svelte. She is, of course, beautiful in the classical Indian mold, and she carries herself with the grace that only comes with enormous self confidence. It’s the sort of self confidence that is engendered, quite possibly, from the knowledge that one is entirely self made. And that Ms. Luthra certainly is. She’s founder and mentor of VLCC, India’s leading slimming, beauty and fitness brand, and one with seven outlets in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, and an eighth center scheduled to open in Al Ain in May. There are VLCC slimming, beauty and fitness centers in Muscat and Bahrain, and by next year there will be a total of some 28 across the Middle East. The largest number of VLCC centers, of course, is in Ms. Luthra’s native India – 150 of them in 75 cities. She facilitates professional development ...
Cavani battle: Man City v PSG; UAE v Qatar cash power Manchester City will go to war with PSG in the summer for Napoli star Edinson Cavani. The Daily Star Sunday says City are set for a sensational £40million shoot-out for striker Cavani with PSG. PSG director of football Leonardo held talks with Cavani’s representatives during the January transfer window. He wanted to ensure City were not stealing a march on PSG in the battle for Cavani and to lay the foundations for a deal when the next window opens in the summer. But the South American hitman is still the player City boss Roberto Mancini wants to replace Mario Balotelli, sold to AC Milan for £19m. So it’s shaping up to be a battle of the Middle East money men – Abu Dhabi-owned City versus PSG, bankrolled from Qatar.

*** MotoGP *** In an era where contracts increasingly restrict MotoGP riders from riding in any race outside the premier series, it's good to see Bradley Smith is being allowed to appear in an event outside the MotoGP championship, although if you were hoping to see him in the UK, you're out of luck. He'll be racing in the second round of the Qatar International Championship (QIRRCH) double header that takes place on January 11th and 12th at the Losail Circuit in Qatar. Smith will be on a Pete Beale Racing prepared Yamaha YZF-R1 road bike in his Yamaha MotoGP Tech3 squad’s Monster Energy colours. The trip is billed as developing motorcycle racing in the Middle East and Smith will be advising local riders at track days at the Bahrain International F1 circuit, the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and in Dubai. I'd hazard a guess it's more to do with looking for new countries to host MotoGP events, as the last year's arrangement with four races in front of half-empty stands in recession-hit Spain is clearly ...

Technology created 50 rainstorms in Abu Dhabi's Al Ain region in 2010' "For centuries people living in the Middle East have dreamed of turning the sandy desert into land fit for growing crops with fresh water on tap. Now that holy grail is a step closer after scientists employed by the ruler of Abu Dhabi claim to have generated a series of downpours. Fifty rainstorms were created in the state's eastern Al Ain region using technology designed to control the weather. Most of the storms were at the height of the summer in July and August when there is no rain at all. People living in Abu Dhabi were baffled by the rainfall which sometimes turned into hail and included gales and lightening. HOW TECHNOLOGY IS KICKING UP A STORM The Metro System scientists used ionisers to produce negatively charged particles called electrons. They have a natural tendency to attach to tiny specks of dust which are ever-present in the atmosphere in the desert-regions. These are then carried up from the emitters by convection - up ...

National Bank of Abu Dhabi and National Bank of Kuwait lead the Middle East and Africa 2012 safest ranking -
the global financial crisis has slowed the pace of building in much of the world, ensuring that 2012 won’t exactly go down as a boom year for architects. But there are plenty of eagerly anticipated projects slated for completion, and Architectural Digest has compiled a shortlist of 12 key buildings for 2012. A couple of high-profile American projects made the list, almost as much for controversy (the new Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia) and cutbacks (the new Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York) as for their noteworthy architecture. In the Middle East, the lately bustling construction hubs of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha didn’t make the cut, but Amman, Jordan, did.
